The 84-year-old film star turned animal rights activist lashed out at the islanders in an open letter to the local authorities, accusing them of mistreating livestock and pets. “The natives have kept their savage genes,” wrote Bardot, who has been convicted five times of similar offences, mostly for Islamophobic comments. Amaury de Saint-Quentin, the Prefect of Réunion, referred her latest outburst to the public prosecutor on Wednesday, saying it “included insulting and racist terms... likely to constitute an offence”."

Brigitte Bardot is facing prosecution for inciting racial hatred after calling people from a French island in the Indian Ocean “savages”.

The French screen siren, 84, wrote an inflammatory open letter to government representatives in France’s overseas territory, Reunion Island, which lies between Madagascar and Mauritius, claiming the residents were cruel to animals.

Bardot, who turned to animal rights activism after retiring as an actress, sent the letter to local officials on Tuesday, calling on them to take action against islanders she alleges are cruel to animals. Instead, Reunion’s Prefect (head of police) Amaury de Saint-Quentin has filed a lawsuit accusing her of inciting racial hatred.

According to British newspaper The Times, she claimed that Reunioners poisoned cats and dogs, and that goats were decapitated and their innards thrown into the sea to attract sharks in an “Indian Tamil” festival – an apparent reference to Reunion’s 25 per cent Hindu population.

“All that is reminiscent of the cannibalism of past centuries and should be stopped,” the God Created Woman actress went on. “The natives have kept their genes of savages but French laws are meant to be respected.

“I am ashamed of this island, of the savagery which reigns there, of the risks taken by human beings who try to save cats and dogs targeted by this degenerate population still impregnated by the ancestral customs and barbaric traditions.”

The veteran star’s remarks have prompted an outcry on the paradise island and de Saint-Quentin called her words “offensive” and “racist”. Politicians from mainland France have also condemned her slurs.

Bardot is an outspoken supporter of French far-right groups and has already been fined for inciting racial hatred on five occasions, including for attacking Muslims for their treatment of animals in Halal food preparation.
