also, when they are wrong. when they are misjudging the dynamic. where the person who is the dog might be loyal and obedient but there is in fact no leash. and they will not find that out until they truly fuck around
i will ALWAYS clap my hands excitedly and lean forward in my seat when someone tells a character to "keep your dog on a leash" only for it to turn out they're referring to another person

Today's brainworm:
Amadeus of the Green Stretch is like the most terrifying possible fusion of Tarquin from Order of the Stick and Thrawn from Star Wars. Crazy motherfucker, but absolutely pragmatic and tactical, and as charismatic as he is ruthless and efficient.

Any institution has its fair share of ghost stories – spirits walk the hallways of museums, schools, hospitals, prisons. Few, however, have as much of a storied history as Arkham State Hospital. Nor do they often have their own cemeteries, headstones beaten down from decades of hard rain. Jeremiah walks between the overgrown rows of paupers’ graves, a wreath of rue and forget-me-nots held to his chest. The pathway beneath him is grass sprouting in hard-packed dirt. It’s his hour for lunch.
The hospital rises to his back, ivy-covered brick and new additions to the Arkhams’ ancestral home sprawling out. The cemetery hasn’t expanded in any considerable way in recent years. More medication, more successes; less funding, less patients. The unfortunate few who have no one to claim them are buried with their names, now, instead of a number that often doesn’t correspond to anything at all. But Jeremiah is in the older part of the cemetery, dug before Thorazine. The numbers are weathered away to faded imprints. He counts by memory, by steps, and finds himself standing atop his great-uncle’s grave. Six feet below rests the bones of Amadeus Arkham, the founder of all that Arkham was and is.
He died decades ago in a scrawl-scratched room with the attending orderlies not even knowing his name. That room has been tiled over now, made shiny and new and clean. Jeremiah kneels to place the wreath.
It had taken him months of lunch breaks to piece together Amadeus’ final resting place, an hour a day spent in the dark dusty cellars that worm beneath the hospital. His predecessors had thought proper disposal of patient files too much effort and had locked them below for “archival” instead. Jeremiah had opened a rusted file cabinet only to discover a warren of dead rats. He’d wondered if Amadeus’ records would share the same fate. But he’d found them eventually, stuffed into a leather folio stuffed into a rotten bookshelf. They’re safe in his office now.
Jeremiah runs a finger along the headstone, along the numbers so faded that he only knows them from the mildewed paper they’d been written on. If it weren’t an act of gross favoritism, he would have another headstone made. He considered claiming the body and reinterring it, once. The historical Arkham family cemetery is only a short walk away. That too would have been favoritism, would have been unexplainable, would have rattled loose things that Jeremiah prefers under lock-and-key.
He gets to his feet, dusting at the green tinge to his knee. He says nothing, because he knows how much the staff talk of him already. He is an Arkham, madness and its cure run in his blood. It wouldn’t do for him to be seen talking to himself, even if such things are natural when any other man or woman does them at their family member’s grave.
In a few days, Jeremiah will return to take away the wilted wreath just like he has every year. He will bury it over the hill, where the cemetery will eventually stretch in future decades, and he will return to work as though it were any other lunch.
Today, Jeremiah stares down at the obliterated slab that marks a man’s grave. Then he returns to work as though it were any other lunch.

the juggling erraticerrata does with names and Names in pgte is so fucking good. like. the moment the narrative stops referring to him as "The Black Knight" and starts using "Amadeus of the Green Stretch" instead 👀👀👀👀
and the way Otto Reitzenberg's last name gets dropped as the battle progresses and its replaced with "Redcrown" hot DAMN is that good
#practical guide to evil#otto redcrown#he's just a funky little guy#also 'otto redcrown and the kingfisher prince' sounds like a helluva fable

(cyclops is still baby and amadeus didn't become brawn just go with it k)
The explosion was heavy. Nothing worse than Amadeus had dealt with before, but just enough to knock him off-balance. And, once he managed to look through the smoke, to have sent him to another dimension. Just like Nadia had said.
"Huh... I owe her an apology. And ten bucks." He groaned, stretching his arms out, wincing as the tips of his fingers turned green.
"Owe who an apology?" A reserved voice asked. No, not reserved, he realized as he turned on his heel to see the woman standing there, her eyes and hands glowing threateningly. She also had green skin and abnormally red hair, but Amadeus was more concerned about the glowing part.
"Friend of mine." He replied, conversationally, and then his eyes caught onto the symbol on her chest.
An unmistakeable red X.
Despite himself, he was already relaxing, "Oh, you're with the good guys at least."
Her glowing eyes died down as she blinled in confusion, "I... err, yes?"
"And I have a friend who works for our dimension's version of you guys!" Amadeus explained excitedly, "You don't need to blast me. I'm sure we can figure something out!"
She smiled, a little uncomfortable, "I... Uh... Sure?"

I love the reverse, too, when the character is a habitual enough liar that you can only figure out what's true of what they said by cross-checking with what they /get/ out of saying the thing and how that correlates with what they said. Like a fucking differential equation. You /don't/ know what they want but there's really only two options for why they're saying the thing they're saying: either it's true, or they want the result that will happen from saying it. ("They think it's funny" counts, complicating the equation further. Gotta track those things too)
(and i hate when people say "but we have no way to know anything about them" no you just didnt put in the effort!!!)
(and i ALSO hate when people blindly believe shit they say like it wasnt completely obvious WHY they were saying it and also like it didnt completely contradict the actual shit they DID come on)
I love when characters lie. you can learn so much about them even when they're not telling you. dissecting the lie is more fun than taking anything they might say at face value. figuring out their motivations... what they're trying to achieve... are they guilty? do they regret it? did they lie gleefully?

Cover sketch for Book 1
Having some quick fun. Won't be doing more with this, though.
Captain probably should be a tad bigger than this, but ehhh... Composition.
Also having fun with Cat's school clothing. Callow seems to have a pretty clear European medieval inspiration, so no. Cat would not wear a modern sailor uniform. Her school clothes with the school heraldry on would probably have a much more medieval livery feel.

still completely obsessed with Amadeus of the Green Stretch btw
like, the guy is - he has NO vices. not a single one unless you count day drinking and that is a cultural thing that he doesn't do on campaign anyway
every single thing he's ever done wrong has been a result of his VIRTUES and he has done so so so many wrong things
he's the good intentions paving the road to hell, he's the good man you need to fear more than the bad man, he's the nice one to beware of, he's the flaws of utilitarian calculus laid bare and personified
his entire personality is "cinnamon roll too good for this world too pure" and it turns out sometimes that "too" really doesn't work out well for people around the good & pure person
not in a "snapped and started killing" "woobie destroyer of worlds" way but in a sheer "continued to do his best no matter how bad the situation" and maybe in some situations you really do need to step back from the trolley tracks and let the lever rest in the default position
he's the paladin asked to kill a child to save the world, who proceeded to kill the child and then be confronted with the choice again and make the same one again, and again, and
he's so HUMAN. he's so tired, he's so mired in bad habits, and he's so what happens when you take someone completely selfless and dunk them into shit only for them to keep striving
he's such a perfect tragedy

special shoutout to the blorbos where the conclusion is 'literally every other situation is better tailored for him than the one hes in right now'. stewwwwwwwww
A rly fun thing to do immediately once u get a grasp on a blorbo is put him in a situation Not tailored for him and see what he does. The opposite of a good time. put the little magic man in a knife fight. put the charismatic bard in a marathon ninja warrior race for a prize. put the strong girl in a mind puzzle. how does this little lab rat react when he’s out of his depth
#reblog#amadeus of the green stretch#i mean there are MAYBE less suited situations for him out there than his canon one but tbh i doubt it#this is an open challenge to tell me im wrong btw#OR to tell me im right#i just wanna talk about him#spin spin spin...
