I'm about to put a "Christmas episode" section into my plan for the third "Violins and Violets" book for this exact reason! You think it's not advancing the plot to show Katharina spending Christmas with her friends? Oh. You are wrong. The seeds for so many plants are being sown in those scenes... So many.
crying and sobbing y'all when people said that you only add scenes that advance the plot they didn't JUST mean the overarching plot. they meant the plot of the book... entirely. like a conversation between two friends can advance the plot by characterizing them and grounding them with a meaningful relationship. if your book doesn't have "filler" it's missing emotional beats. which are plot. which are important. fun and whimsy aren't mutually exclusive from what "needs" to happen in your book. the advice isn't bad it's just taken too literally stop come back.

Happy Update! (23rd May 2021)
Hello, friends! I’m sorry I’ve been a bit quiet on here just recently. I’m in the last few weeks of my final year at university (French and German BA), so it’s been all about coursework, remote exams and job-hunting this month.
However, I successfully interviewed for a job that looks absolutely perfect last week, and now I have employment lined up to start just a few days after my last university deadline, so that’s ready to go, and I’m very excited about that. This week, I had a remote exam for French Language. I have another one tomorrow, plus a deadline for some German Literature coursework, and two remote exams for German Language, the week after that. I’ve already finished my Psycholinguistics module, and actually wrote most of my last essay for that on the train I took to my interview.
It’s so strange to think my time at university is so nearly over. I’ve absolutely loved it, and it’s going to feel quite odd to be going to work, rather than class, every day. (I don’t think I’ve had a particular place to “go every day” since before the pandemic, but that’s a whole extra thing!) The job I’ve been given has long hours, but is right up my street, and stays in the office; I don’t have to bring work home with me at the end of the day. That means I’ll be able to see much more clearly how much time I’ll have for writing, as it always feels like there’s Something More to do for university, and spare moments that I do have for writing are snaffled and gobbled down as quickly as possible, so that I can get on with my next bit of homework.
Today, for example: I have just spent the last 45 minutes typing up a voice memo I made yesterday, while I was on a walk (trying to get some fresh air and a bit of stretch into my legs). I was talking myself through all the ideas I have for how I can edit “Vogeltje” and flesh the story out into a full-length novel, as it’s currently a novella, and too short to market easily. I have 1,800 words of notes and ideas for the next draft, and I’ve nearly finished redrafting “Violins and Violets”, to develop the opening scenes and polish a few details, later in the book.
This evening, I’m going out for dinner with some friends from my course, as we’re all keen to grab our last few hours together before we all go off to our separate parts of the world for the next stages of our lives. It’s really exciting, but quite daunting, too. I hope everyone finds something to make them as happy as I am. I feel like it’s all going really well for me.

For those of you who don't know, I usually choose to write with #waterproof or water resistant #ink. Even #pencils in a pinch, because if I don't, this is what happens. LOL I don't dry my hands thoroughly and sometimes I accidentally drop paper onto a spot where I had my drinking cup (which is what happened in this instance) and this is what happened. I feel like I prefer the reliability that if I drop my notebook or notes in water, that they will survive and not become messy ink blobs. Fortunately, this was salvageable but I did have to rewrite it with a ballpoint and I don't usually like to rewrite things. Imagine if this was my story! 0.0;; I do want to hand write my future stories, as soon as I finish with my current #WIP #revisions which are progressing slowly but I have a plan for my vacation week. Next week, I plan on hunkering down and trying to finish another pass of revisions for my #novel. As some of you know, I've been working on revisions for what seems like FOREVER but I haven't been working on them daily as I should. Still I'm going to try to push myself this week and finish because if I don't do it now, I won't finish it any time soon. lol I know a lot of people are fans of Pilot G-2 which is what I used for the picture above, but I can't say I'm a fan. I'm definitely more of a #Uniball pen fan. I probably even prefer ballpoints because their ink is more waterproof than the gel ink. Do you have a preference of what you write with? What are your #pen or #waterproofink recommendations? Any other of you guys write your stories by hand? Getting the urge to write with my fountain pens again on a more regular basis! Please tell me I'm not the only one that has this issue with writing with wet hands. haha #amwriting #amrevising #nano2018 #amoutlining #amplanning #indiewriter #indieauthor #indiewriters #indieauthors #authorpreneuer #nanorebel #revisingtips #writingtips #novelwriting #novel #fiction #amwritingfantasy #fantasy #ya #waterresistant https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp-BLBinxW4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4r4kywgbzva3

#TheWritingDiaries
Day 13
Today's session was dedicated to pretty much reading. I still can't get myself out of the rut that I am in and with the self-imposed December deadline slowly looming, I need to get my butt in gear.
But, I'm afraid of messing up.
I fear of going back into it again, and running into the same problems/issues as before. So instead of wasting time trying to come up with a plan, I'm back-pedaling a bit.
Last Christmas, I believe, I received three writing resource books. Two that deal with characters and one that deals with outlining.
And oh, boy...do I need help with outlining.
I figure, at least for the week. I'm going to focus my time on these books, before going back and taking the more logical route.
I read the outlining novel, which...if you want to check out the book yourself, It's "Outlining Your Novel: Map You Way to Success" by K.M. Weiland.
I read the first two chapters and it expanded my knowledge of outlining. If you know me, you'd know that I'm not.a huge fan of outlining. I avoid it at all costs.
But, my pantsing days are numbered.
I can't keep running around in circles and hoping that one day, the words will stick to the wall.
I need to find something else. Something that helps me get through this novel. And I'm looking for inspiration from K.M. Weiland's book.
The next book I focused on was "Creating Characters" which is an anthology of different advice from writers when it comes to creating and writing characters. Each chapter is written by a distinguished chapter, and each chapter reads more like a TedTalk or an article off a website. It's quick, simple, and very informative.
This book also expanded my knowledge when it comes to planning out and fleshing out characters. My favorite chapter, so far, is the first chapter written by Chuck Wendig. The chapter was informative, hilarious, and eye-opening.
It gave off pointers to help get you started in the mindset of creating characters. And I enjoyed reading it.
All in all, this session was very much informative and I hope to continue it, for at the very least, this week.
My advice to anyone who is struggling, like me, to plan or start writing...my advice would be to just throw yourself in writing-related videos (be it advice, updates, etc.) or read writing tips/advice with whatever you need help with. You don't need a resource book. You can find similar resources on the web, too.
That's what's great about the Internet.
Well, that's all for today. I did plan on doing some planning, but you see..I'm changing course. So I don't have music, and I don't have photos.
Just lots and lots of well-wishes and meaningful advice.
If you're lost...get help.
