Baguio Midland Courier: A Rich History

History is a goldmine, no matter what aspect or context. Journalism is no stranger, as it has its gems and jewels of its own.

Baguio Midland Courier, one of Baguio City’s local newspapers, happens to be full of its own shimmering gold coins and pearl necklaces; its story on how it came to be is a treasure chest full of anecdotes.

In the year 1947, a local journalist named Sinai C. Hamada, son to a Japanese national and a Filipina, founded the Courier. The term ‘Midland’ is used in the context to differentiate the paper from its lowland counterpart and it from the highlands; the city is situated right in the middle of both, hence the name. Lakay Sinai was one of the editors of the University of the Philippines’ student paper, the Collegian. He wrote about issues that the Cordillera back then with bravery and substance; evidence of such bravery is exhibited in the fact that he had written about the Mountain Trail’s state that took forever to be fixed.

Sinai C. Hamada. Photo taken from here. Another one of his notable editorial pieces was the paper’s very first one, published on the 28th of April in 1947. As cited by writer Harley Palangchao in his article “Baguio Midland Courier goes online”, Lakay Sinai had “humbly announced the birth of a fair, fearless, friendly, and free paper and vowed to the readers that this paper will go somewhere. There was no turning back.” Indeed, the paper had never turned back since: from being a 4-page chronicle, it now sports 40-plus pages being published weekly, even online with their own website.

Because they have never turned back, the courier was able to build up their treasure trove that is their history. in the past, publishing was incredibly difficult, they had to hand-pick their fonts or make use of lino-type machines and make use of press machines. The processing of pictures even had to be taken to far-away places such as Manila.

Printing a paper was very much a luxury back then compared to the present, as Midland would have school papers of universities such as Baguio Tech (University of Baguio) and Baguio Colleges Foundation (University of the Cordilleras) published as supplementary issues until these universities had a printing press of their own. The Midland Courier was the start for many things. For one, the paper served as the city’s, in the words of Virginia Oteyza de Guia, “unofficial chronicler” at the absence of a public one. Another one to note, is that the paper had started picture obituaries; the first one ever published was one of the publisher’s mother, Virginia Hamada in 1977. Many papers, including natial ones, follow this format even at the present. Lakay Sinai passed down editorship to his son Steve Hamada, Oswald Alvaro, Joe Dacawi, and later on, Abe Belena. The paper was also a gateway to the start of other ventures in journalism; after Steve Hamada had resigned from the Courier, he had set up the Baguio-Cordillera Post. After 73 years, the Baguio Midland Courier only continues to fill up its treasure chest full of history. It does not seem to show any signs of slowing down despite the takeover of new media, as the Courier only adapts with the changing times with the paper bringing its services online. Like the rest of journalism, the Courier will continue to add jewels and diamonds to its collection, and it will only continue to pile up.

Comunidad cinematográfica pidió por una salida democrática en Venezuela

Venezuela-. Por medio de un comunicado y manifiesto, la comunidad cinematográfica de Venezuela demandó una salida democrática a la situación por la que atraviesa el país. 

En este sentido, pidió el regreso al orden constitucional, así como también comentaron su rechazo a instalación de una posible Asamblea Nacional Constituyente (ANC) en la nación criolla.

“Se hace necesario enfrentar las pretensiones del Jefe de Estado de resolver una crisis institucional, social moral y económica con la imposición de la elección de una Asamblea Nacional Constituyente, nacida a espaldas del pueblo y de los preceptos constitucionales”, indica parte del texto. 

A continuación presentamos el comunicado íntegro:

“Nosotros, cineastas, actores, guionistas, directores, fotógrafos, editores, técnicos, productores, integrantes de los gremios o trabajadores independientes de la industria cinematográfica nacional, unidos y convencidos de la necesidad de una salida democrática y pacífica ante la grave crisis que sufre Venezuela, damos un paso adelante en un esfuerzo de Unidad Nacional, para acompañar a la Asamblea Nacional, a los gremios, a la ciudadanía, a los trabajadores, a los estudiantes, a la Fiscalía General de la República y a todos aquellos que apoyen una solución inmediata, justa, democrática y pacífica de la crisis nacional, para la conformación de un gran movimiento en defensa de la democracia y la Constitución.

Se hace necesario enfrentar las pretensiones del Ejecutivo de resolver una crisis institucional, moral, social y económica con la imposición de la elección de una Asamblea Constituyente, nacida a espaldas del pueblo y de los preceptos constitucionales, que significa un retroceso en la progresividad de los derechos ciudadanos y en el respeto de los derechos humanos esenciales de la población venezolana.

Es preciso un cambio urgente y así lo reclama una parte importante del país. Necesitamos el restablecimiento del orden constitucional, para lo cual exhortamos y abogamos por el retorno del funcionamiento pleno de la Asamblea Nacional, electa por más de catorce millones de votantes; la realización de elecciones libres, universales, secretas y directas, con un CNE imparcial e institucional que de amplias garantías de participación de todos los sectores del país; la apertura de canales de ayuda humanitaria; el cese inmediato de la violencia, la represión y la persecución contra las manifestaciones pacíficas y la liberación de los presos políticos y manifestantes detenidos.

Los cineastas venezolanos abajo firmantes respaldamos y queremos que se cumpla la Constitución vigente, con amplias garantías para la libertad de información y expresión.
