My Baikal Bounty Hunter Coach Gun and .38 Special chamber adapters
Did some updating to my coach gun which I bought about a year ago on the second hand market for $200. Its a 12 gauge double barrel made by Baikal, which is a Russian company so like, no more of these are coming into the country because of the trade embargo. It’s become my go to gun for just about everything, hunting, wilderness adventures, fun on the range, fending off stagecoach robbers, combating Thanos’ minions, etc. I recent bought a leather shotgun shell holder/recoil pad that was handmade by Magnolia Leather Works on etsy. Shoutout to them.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/MagnoliaLeatherWorks
So as some of you know I have been experimenting with shotgun chamber adapters, which is basically a barrel you insert into the chamber of your shotgun to shoot other caliber cartridges from it. There are a wide variety of calibers including 9mm Luger, .380 ACP, .45 ACP, 38 special, .357 magnum, .44 magnum, .40 S&W, .22 LR, etc. These are marketed to survivalists, sportsmen and women, and wilderness adventurers as a way to increase the versatility of a shotgun. The chamber adapter I’m testing is the Shortlane Bugout in .38 special, which is a five inch (12.7 cm) long rifled adapter.
It’s recommended that best accuracy is at only 10 to 15 yards. I did some plinking at 20-25 yards and found it was reasonably suitable for this purpose. So I set up some targets at 50 yards. 50 yards would be a reasonable range for hunting medium game (such as white tail deer) in the North American woodlands. This does not make your shotgun into a sniper rifle. In the plains of the Midwest or deserts of the West where longer range shooting is required these probably would be much less practical. Anyway once I figured out how this setup was shooting, I fired a six shot grouping at 50 yards offhand using the front bead as a sight. I aimed low to account for the gap between my eye and front sight (there is no rear sight) and aimed to the left because I was firing from the right barrel only. I was using Blaser 158 grain ammo, the cheapo aluminum cased stuff. Here were my results.
Note: The bullseye is roughly the size of a quarter.
So for the most part the accuracy isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t say it’s good. Five of my shots are grouped somewhat reasonably close to the bull and I had a one off shot. Problem is, I can get similar accuracy using 12 gauge slugs at twice the range. I was tempted to do more tests at 75 and 100 yards, but I figure this is probably the extent of it’s effective accuracy.
I would never take something like this out for regular hunting season. The accuracy is OK, but the velocity from .38 special out of a five inch barrel is not enough to ethically take medium game, thus I would never recommend it for that purpose. However, if I was in some kind of hard times desperation scenario, say Great Depression 2 Electric Bugaloo, ammunition choices are limited, and my hungry family and I need fed while “Winter is Coming”, this would be a practical option.

RAISED GARDEN BED BASICS
The Benefits of Raised Bed Gardening
Raised garden beds, also called garden boxes, are great for growing small plots of veggies and flowers. They keep pathway weeds from your garden soil, prevent soil compaction, provide good drainage and serve as a barrier to pests such as slugs and snails. The sides of the beds keep your valuable garden soil from being eroded or washed away during heavy rains. In many regions, gardeners are able to plant earlier in the season because the soil is warmer and better drained when it is above ground level.
By raising the soil level, raised garden beds also reduce back strain when bending over to tend the bed. This is especially helpful to older gardeners or people with bad backs. And if the beds are built well, the gardener can sit on the edge of the bed while weeding, and for some gardeners this is the biggest benefit of all. Raised beds are not the same as garden planters. Planters are elevated containers which have bottoms to prevent the soil from falling out. Planter bottoms usually are slatted, with some type of semi-permeable cloth barrier which permits drainage. Raised beds, however, do not have bottoms; they are open to the ground, which offers the benefit of permitting plant roots to go further into the ground for available nutrients. Raised garden beds are available in a variety of different materials, or they can be made with relative ease.
How to Build a Raised Garden Bed
Gardeners can build their own elevated garden beds with relative ease. You will need to decide what kind of wood to use, how tall you want the bed to be, and whether you want to build the entire bed yourself or use pre-made corner braces which simplify the construction process and provide a secure corner that won't work loose over time.
What kind of wood to use?
In most cases, cedar is the best wood to use for garden beds because cedar is naturally rot resistant. Western red cedar is commonly used, but Vermont white cedar, Port Orford (yellow) cedar and Juniper are also great choices for outdoor construction projects. Redwood is another excellent rot-resistant wood, but redwood is a more limited resource. How long the wood will last depends on the type of cedar and your local weather conditions. In our garden, we use red cedar for building the beds, and some of these beds have lasted 15 years. In general, you should expect about 10 years from a cedar bed before it begins to deteriorate.
How tall should the bed be?
You can build the bed to any desired height up to 36". The most common height is 11", which is the height of two stacked 2" x 6" boards. If you have good soil beneath the bed, the roots will go down deeper as needed to access more soil and nutrients, so you can even have beds that are only 6" high. If you want a taller bed, remember that as you go taller, the weight of the added soil will add pressure to the sides, and will bow them outward. This is easily prevented by including cross-supports. We recommend using cross-supports in any beds which are taller than 18", or longer than 6'. It is also important to consider the soil depth requirements for the roots of the vegetables you want to plant. Depending on the soil conditions beneath your bed, you may want to build the sides of your bed higher for certail crops. For more information, read our article Soil Depth Requirements for Popular Vegetables.
How wide and long should the bed be?
We recommend bed width to be no wider that 4' across. This is because it is easy to reach the center of the bed from either side, and for people with long arms, to reach across the bed. It's important to keep the width this narrow to avoid having to step on the bed since this would compress the soil. The bed can be any length as long as cross supports are installed every 4' - 6' along the length of the bed to prevent bowing. We think longer beds are best, if you have the garden space. We have built many raised beds over the years, and our construction process has evolved. The method described here is, in our opinion, the simplest method of building a raised garden bed, and it requires no special tools or expertise. Using this method, you can build your bed to any desired length, width and height.
Tools & Materials:
LUMBER
Use cedar "2 x" boards for the sides. These are commonly 2" x 6", but you can use 2" x 4" or 2" x 8" boards if this is what you have available. (2" boards bought at a lumber yard are actually 1.5" thick..) For the corner posts, use 4" x 4"s, cut to 10" longer than the desired height of the bed. If your bed is going to be longer than 8', you'll need extra posts to put in mid-span to prevent bowing and to provide a place to secure the cross-supports. In the photos below, we used 2" x 4" boards for the posts instead of 4" x 4"s. This is because the wood we had was full dimension, i.e., the 2" thickness was a full 2". If you get your wood from a mill, they can cut it full dimension for you.
FASTENINGS
Use 3.5" #10 coated deck screws for the project. You'll need six screws for each corner and two for each mid-span post. If you are using cross-supports, get a few 1" stainless screws.
CROSS SUPPORTS
Buy several lengths of 1/2" aluminum flat stock. This is available at most hardware stores, usually in 8' lengths. It is very easy to cut with a hacksaw and to drill for the screws.
TOOLS
Hand saw, square, carpenter's level, mallet (or sledge), screwdriver, hacksaw, drill.
Is treated lumber safe?
In 2003, the EPA banned the sale of lumber treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) for residential use. Two compounds, alkaline copper quat (ACQ) and copper azole (CA-B), have now replaced CCA wood in the residential market. Both contain copper and a fungicide but no arsenic. The copper keeps insects at bay, and the fungicide prevents soil fungus from attacking the wood. In ACQ, the fungicide is quat, which is also used in swimming-pool chemicals and as a disinfectant. The other compound, CA-B, uses copper and tebuconazole, a fungicide used on food crops. According to Miles McEvoy, who works in organic certification with the Washington State Department of Agriculture, no pressure-treated wood is allowed in soils used to grow organic food. If you want to meet this high standard, choose a different material. Until the safety of treated wood is proven conclusively, we recommend you use a naturally rot-resistant wood like red cedar, black locust or redwood. Under most circumstances, these woods will last 10 - 20 years when used for raised beds. Recycled composite plastic lumber is another alternative, and is now available in a variety of sizes and colors.
Raised Bed Installation / Tips / Layout Suggestions
Lay out the beds so they are horizontally facing south
It's best if the long side of the bed faces south. This assures equal light exposure to all the plants growing in the bed. If your bed is aligned the other way (the ends facing south), you may have planting limitations because taller plants in front can block the sunlight to small plants in back.
Double-dig the bed area
If the ground has never been used for gardening, it should be 'turned over' (dug) to a depth of 16". This gives you a chance to pull rocks, and to see the composition of your soil. Leave soil piled up in the center, away from the sides, so you can set the bed in place without obstructions.
Check for roots
As you dig the soil, keep an eye out for any roots which may be growing beneath your beds. If left to grow, these roots will steal the organic amendments you add to the soil. Pull any roots back towards their source, and pull the main root clump. If the source is a living tree, you may need to install a root barrier by digging a narrow trench outside the perimeter of the bed, and deeper than the roots, and then insert a barrier such as heavy plastic sheeting.
Level the bed
Use a level for this task. This may seem overly meticulous, but after several waterings the soil will settle to level, and you'll want the bed to be the same. Set a stiff board (2x4) on top of the bed sides, across the span, and set your level on this board. Tap down the sides as needed till you get a level reading. Be sure to check for level both along the length and across the width of your bed.
Burrowing pests?
If your garden has burrowing pests such as moles, a layer of 1/2" or 1/4" hardware cloth (galvanized mesh) can be laid across the bottom, before soil is added. The mesh should continue at least 3" up along the insides of the bed and be stapled in place. If you plan to grow root crops, such as potatoes or carrots, you may want to set the mesh lower in the ground by digging deeper when you are setting up the bed. There are also raised garden planters available for above-ground gardening. These planters are designed to be easy on the back, but they also keep burrowing pests, rabbits, cats and other critters out of your garden.
Spread soil out evenly
Add any planned soil amendments, such as peat, compost or lime, and spread the soil evenly across the bed. Water the bed with an even, fine spray. This will settle the soil; add more soil to "top off". (Over time the soil will settle an inch or two more.) Rake the bed once more to even out the soil and you're ready to plant. To learn more about developing the ideal soil for your raised beds, read our articles: 6 Tips for Building Soil in your Raised Beds and Planters 3 Useful Soil Mixes for Planters and Raised Beds
Avoid stepping on the bed
Once the soil is added and the bed is planted, make it a policy to never step on the bed. Stepping on the bed will compact the soil, reduce aeration and impact root growth. Pets should also be trained to stay off the raised beds. It's very helpful to have a 'spanner board', a short sturdy board, like a 2 x 6, that's just longer than the width of your beds. This board can be laid across the bed, setting on top of the bed sides, and can be used to set buckets on when weeding or adding amendments, and it can be used to step on if you must step on the bed. It also makes a handy seat when weeding or tending the bed.
Leave a generous width between beds for the pathways
It helps when pathways between raised beds are wide enough for a small wheelbarrow. For grass pathways, make sure they are at least wide enough for a weedeater or a small mower. (In our raised bed gardens the pathways are 22" wide.)
Mulch the pathways between beds
Weeding pathways is a nuisance which you can avoid by putting a double layer of perforated landscape cloth over the pathway, and cover this with a 2- 3" layer of bark mulch or coarse sawdust. When laying down the landscape cloth, allow it to come up 1" against the bottom board of the bed, and staple this to the bed. This will not be visible because the mulch will cover it. When buying mulch, ask the seller if they have had any complaints about weed seeds in the mulch. It is very common for bark mulch to have weed seeds which sprout in your pathways. Some weeds will still appear on your pathways regardless of the mulch. Wait until it rains before pulling them out, or you may rip the landscape cloth. The weeds will come out easily if the ground is wet.
Can a raised bed be installed on a concrete surface, such as a patio? Yes!
Many beautiful raised bed installations are set on concrete surfaces, but there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration. Typically, patio and driveway surfaces are not level; this enables water to drain away from the main house structure. Raised beds should be built to level, the same as if being constructed on soil, but the bottoms of the beds will need to be blocked up on the low end just enough to facilitate and direct drainage. How to Build a Raised Garden Bed: Best Kits and DIY Plans
So you want to build raised garden beds and you’re wondering which system is best for you. Should you go with a pre-fab kit or start from scratch? Here’s what you need to know.
There’s no question that raised beds are popular for a reason. Not only do they look stunning in a backyard garden, they also ease the workload that comes with maintaining traditional, in-ground beds. Unfortunately some raised bed systems are costly to buy and time consuming to install. But not all raised bed systems are the same.
You're reading: How to Build a Raised Garden Bed: Best Kits and DIY Plans
Whether you’re handy with tools or don’t know a drill press from a driver, there are kits on the market that are easy to build with little time or expense. There are also do-it-yourself options if you have the time or the inclination.
So why should you bother assembling or building a raised bed garden?
Benefits of raised bed gardening
There are a lot of great reasons to build raised beds that contain and protect your garden soil.
Less tilling
Raised garden beds require less tilling than traditional, in-ground beds. Instead of digging up a compacted bed year after year, many gardeners add compost and other soil amendments to the top of their elevated beds in fall, then let nature do the rest over the dormant season. This is a good practice for both soil and plants.
Easier on your back
Bending, stooping, and kneeling can all take its toll on your back and joints. Raised bed designs come in a variety of heights to make reaching your crops less stressful on your body over time.
Nice to look at
In the backyard or the front, a series of raised planters surrounded by paths looks neat and well tended all year round.
Controls weeds and keep out critters
Raised garden boxes are known to deter rabbits, which will handily nibble in-ground crops growing at eye level. They also make it easy to install copper slug ‘fencing’ and other deterrents around the perimeter. Raising your beds also means moving crops away from dogs that may otherwise (ahem) urinate on your garden. If you have weed problems, you can install a weed barrier beneath your bed’s soil at installation time to ensure invasive weeds or tree roots don’t invade the bed.
Improves drainage
If your garden soil is normally wet into springtime, elevated beds solve this problem by lifting the soil above ground level and giving your plant roots room to breathe.
Offers a head start on the growing season
Raised beds filled with nutrient rich, organic soil warm faster in spring due to their elevation away from the cold ground—and their improved drainage. In this way, beds built 12 inches deep or more have the added benefit of giving plants a longer growing season.
For more benefits, see 10 Reasons to Add Raised Garden Beds to Your Garden.
Pre-fab raised garden bed kits
If you don’t have the time or resources to muster the raw materials for building a raised garden bed from scratch, you can purchase one of the easy-to-assemble kits on the market. In this case, your first consideration should be the type of materials available and how quickly and easily they go together.
Natural wood
Some of the least expensive kits are made from raw, natural wood or wood treated with natural wood stabilizers. (Avoid pressure treated lumber.) Cedar is the most common wood used for raised beds because of its durability and resistance to rot. It’s also lighter to handle than many other woods. Two cedar boxed garden systems that assemble in minutes are detailed below.

Farm Style Raised Garden Beds
These easy-to-assemble beds are made from Vermont white cedar. Stack them together in minutes without tools, fill with soil, and your garden is ready to go. They will last for many years and weather to a soft, silver grey.
Natural Cedar Beds
Like the kit above, these beds are made from natural cedar and assemble in minutes without tools (unless you opt for the version that includes trim). The main difference is that the boards in this system are Oregon incense cedar treated with a natural silica-based stabilizer. Both kits come in a variety of sizes and shapes.
Composite lumber
Next in terms of price are kits made from a blend of hardwood fibers and post-consumer recycled plastic. Approved for organic growing, these kits are durable, light, long lasting, and easy to assemble. They also resemble natural grain wood in color and texture. The reason they cost a little more? Wood composite is warp resistant and maintenance free. They will look the same for years without interventions.
Composite Raised Garden Bed
This composite bed takes about thirty minutes to put together. Assembly involves sliding each timber into a joint and fastening with zinc-plated screws (provided with the kit). The joints each have stake that needs pressing into the ground.
Recycled plastic
The final type of raised garden kit on the market is made from recycled plastic. These kits are the longest lasting and share the same low maintenance features as the composite lumber beds above.
Recycled Plastic Raised Garden Beds
These beds are made from 100% HDPE (high density polyethylene) plastic, the same material that you find in high quality garden furniture and public picnic tables. They are easy to assemble in about 20 minutes and don’t require any tools to put together. They’re also available in five colors, which means you can match them to your backyard décor for a seamless blend. Each non-toxic color includes UV protection to minimize fading over time. And speaking of time, these kits come with a 50 year warranty, which is pretty hard to match.
While there is no clear winner in terms of materials, wood beds biodegrade at the end of their lifespan, meaning no waste gets left behind. That biodegradable capacity means they won’t last as long as synthetic materials, however, so if durability is your goal, a composite or recycled plastic bed is a good alternative option.
For more discussion about the merits of different raised bed materials, read our article Cedar vs. Recycled Plastic vs. Composite Raised Garden Beds
DIY home-built raised beds
Building your own elevated garden boxes is a straightforward project for anyone with access to materials, along with the space and skill to fashion the parts. Here are some things to consider before you build your own raised beds.
Best wood choices
As noted above, cedar is one of the most rot resistant woods available. It’s also lightweight enough to handle for one person if dried thoroughly. Other options include black locust and redwood. If these are too expensive in your area, consider using fir or spruce, with the understanding that they will not last as long. You can also ask your local lumberyard what they recommend. Recycled boards repurposed from other projects are another lower cost option, as long as they aren’t treated. Avoid pressure treated wood and pressure treated lumber.
Use standard sizes, starting with 2 x 6 for the most basic bed with good soil underneath, all the way up to 2 x 12 if you need a taller bed for plants with deeper roots. You can also stack your lumber in tiers.
In general, most garden vegetables need 12 – 24” of soil depth to grow, with a few others needing as much as 36” of depth. (For the needs of specific garden crops, see our table of soil depth requirements.) If you have 12” of usable soil beneath your bed, build up another 12-24” to accommodate the crops on your list.
To stain or not to stain
The woods listed above will last a long time (10-20 years depending on your climate), but they will biodegrade eventually. To slow this process, you can treat your boards before building your beds, but be sure to use a non-toxic wood treatment that won’t leach harmful chemicals into your soil—and potentially your plants. Avoid buying pressure-treated or stained wood, unless it’s specifically designed for using in and around garden beds.
Hardware and other materials
Many screws are made from metal that will leach a dark stain onto wood when exposed to moisture. To avoid this, use coated deck screws or stainless steel. Pre-drill all holes to prevent your wood from splitting.
Simplest raised bed corners
To simplify the job even further, you can purchase pre-made anchor joints for your garden box corners. These brackets feature an 11.5” stake that can be hammered into the ground, making fastening your corners a breeze.
Stacking brackets also exist for the upper levels of tiered beds.
Bracing your beds with crossbeams
For beds longer than 8’, we recommend installing cross supports to prevent bowing outwards from the weight of your soil. Use ½” aluminum flat stock cut to match the inside width of your bed.

Building raised beds from alternative materials
Concrete blocks, bathtubs, metal feed troughs and even old canoes can all work for instant raised garden beds. Just be sure your creative choices don’t expose your soil and plants to toxic chemicals from paints, stains, or other finishes.
Simplest DIY raised garden bed design and instructions
The following instructions demonstrate how to make a simple raised bed with basic materials. This is the design our founder and his family have used in their garden for over 40 years.
The plans make one 4 x 8’ raised garden bed. You can extend the length to fit your space, but if your bed is going to be longer than 8’, you’ll need to add extra posts mid-span to prevent bowing and to provide a place to secure cross supports. See note above about bracing your beds with crossbeams.
To further strengthen your bed, consider using full dimension lumber, also known as “nominal” lumber. This is lumber cut to the full two inches thick and (in this case) six inches wide, instead of the standard cut you will get if you purchase from a commercial supplier (which will be slightly smaller due to shrinkage and planing). You can buy dimensional or nominal lumber from a local mill.
If you’re building on a slope, see our article about How to Build a Raised Garden Bed on Sloping, Uneven Ground.
Materials needed:
Four 8’ 2 x 6″ cedar boards Four 4’ 2 x 6″ cedar boards Four lengths of 4 x 4″ lumber, cut about 15” long, for corner posts 16-24 coated deck screws, size 3.5”#10
Tools needed:
Hand saw Carpenter’s square Level Drill Driver
How to build Your bed
After leveling and clearing the area where your bed will be located, lay out the bottom tier of your beds using two 4’ 2 x 6s, two 8’ 2 x 6s, and your four corner posts. It’s not necessary to cover the ground with landscaping fabric.
Starting with first corner, attach frame to corner post using two screws per side, leveling as you go. Continue with remaining three sides until you have one complete row.
Add the next row of 2 x 6’ boards, screwing to the corner posts as above. Level the entire bed. You may have to dig in places to get your bed to level.
Cut off corner posts flush with top of frame. Smooth ground around bed and fill bed with soil. Now you’re ready to plant!
DIY or kit: which type of raised garden bed is best?
When should I use DIY?
When you have the time and skill to make your own, DIY raised garden beds are often the most economical choice. And while pre-fab kits come in a variety of sizes, you can make DIY beds to fit tricky spaces and unusual depths.
When should I use a pre-fab kit?
If you need your bed to go together quickly, if you don’t have the tools or space to make your own, or if you need a long-lasting plastic or composite system that’s easy to clean and move, a pre-fab kit is the better choice for your situation.
Getting the most from your raised bed garden
Whatever you choose, raised gardens are a satisfying way to grow your own food without the strain and stress on your body. Here are some other tips to remember when using your beds.
Fill your beds with the best soil possible. Avoid buying topsoil, since it usually lacks the nutrients and structure needed for gardening. Instead, look for soil labeled “triple mix” (a mix of topsoil, rotted compost, and peat moss) or garden soil. And beware of adding anything to your beds that may contain weed seeds (unprocessed manure, unfinished compost, etc.) It’s not necessary to use landscaping fabric at the bottom of your bed.
If the ground beneath your bed has never been used for gardening, you can prepare it by turning over to a depth of about 16 inches deep. This will create better conditions for plant roots that need extra depth to grow.
If you live in an area where burrowing pests are a problem, add a layer of hardware cloth (or another fine metal mesh) across the bottom of your garden bed and about 3” up the insides. If other pests affect your area, read How to Keep Animal Pests Out of Your Garden.
Avoid compacting your soil once it’s in place. Stepping on the soil will compress the air pockets needed for plant roots to take up water and nutrients. Instead, use a spanner board (a board that spans your bed from edge to edge) if you need to cross. In general, beds that are no more than 4’ across are usually easiest to access.
