Foster + Partners crowns Sharjah library with giant cantilevered roof

A slender roof cantilevers from all sides of The House of Wisdom, a tech-filled library that Foster + Partners has designed in Sharjah, UAE for the "digital future".

The two-storey building is located 10 kilometres from the city centre in a new cultural district and counts a "book espresso machine" that can print and bind books on demand among its key features.

Its rectilinear form and the distinctive roof that overhangs by 15 metres in all directions are designed by Foster + Partners to complement its desert surroundings.

"The House of Wisdom in Sharjah is a forward-looking conception of what a library should be in the 21st century – embracing a digital future while playing a crucial role as a community hub for learning, underpinned by innovation and technology," said Gerard Evenden, head of studio at Foster + Partners.

"The straight, minimalist lines of the building complement the dunes of the desert, set within a lush landscape. The House of Wisdom is set to be an oasis for the local community, led by research and innovation, at the heart of a new cultural district."

It is topped by a giant overhanging roof

While characterising the concrete and steel building, the cantilevered roof also helps shade the library's large transparent facades from the city's hot climate.

This works in tandem with fixed aluminium screens that filter the low sun in the evenings and movable bamboo screens inside that occupants can use to control glare.

Aluminium screens help filter sunlight

Foster + Partners has supported the roof with four concrete cores positioned near each corner of the building. This design provides open, column-free interiors and is a similar approach used by the firm in a number of its Apple Stores, such as Apple Michigan Avenue and Apple Central World.

Two of these building cores, positioned closest to the entrance, are filled with large sculptural staircases leading to the top floor.

Visitors enter through a double-height reception

Visitors to The House of Wisdom enter along its western edge, where they are greeted by a double-height reception that has a planted courtyard at its centre.

This courtyard helps bring light to the depths of the building and also doubles as a cool and quiet outdoor space for events or contemplation.

The House of Wisdom's book-printing machine is positioned in a reading area on the ground floor, alongside exhibition spaces, a cafe, archival areas and a children's education space.

On the top floor, the studio has designed a series of "pod spaces" that are used as quiet reading rooms, exhibition spaces, women-only areas and a prayer room. Some of these project out over the central courtyard.

The library comprises two storeys

Alongside the planted courtyard, the building is complete with two outdoor gardens. One of these is described as "a knowledge garden", while the other is a children's playground with water fountains.

The knowledge garden is a formal and "geometrically arranged" landscape, with a series of gardens and shaded walkways.

Its centrepiece is a giant spiralling sculpture by British artist Gerry Judah named The Scroll. The artwork is a contemporary interpretation of the ancient Arabic scrolls made from laser-cut rolled steel plates, treated to prevent erosion during sandstorms.

Quiet reading spaces are among its facilities

Foster + Partners is the architecture studio of Norman Foster, founded in London in 1967. Today, it has offices around the globe.

Its completion of The House of Wisdom follows its recent announcement that it has begun construction on the Red Sea International Airport. This airport will serve a tourism development on an archipelago of Saudi Arabian islands for which the studio is also developing a series of resorts, such as ring-shaped hotel on stilts.

It is also currently nearing completion on its 425 Park Avenue skyscraper in New York, which architectural photographer Alan Schindler recently captured in new photos.

Berthold Pott is pleased to present Manor Grunewald’s third solo exhibition in the gallery.

Manor Grunewald (b. 1985) lives and works in Ghent, Belgium. His work encompasses the genres of painting, sculpture and installation. The focus of his work is on prints in the broadest sense: with regard to the image, the material and the technical processes applied. Aspects of archiving, installation and the resulting references to the surrounding space can, however, also be found in his work – in particular in the present exhibition Goods Between Floors, for which Grunewald collaborated for the first time with a scenographer, the architect Theo De Meyer.

Regarding the image:

As a painter of the generation that stands for the transition from the analogue to the digital image, Grunewald is interested in the central questions of painting, such as: ‘What is “real”?’, ‘What do we actually see in the painting’, ‘What happens when the image is reproduced, and what is painterly about this?’ Manor Grunewald’s ‘image processing’ begins with searching for and collecting ‘image templates’. These can be derived from an art catalogue, a magazine, an advertising poster, a comic or something similar. This initial image is then subjected to various processes of transformation. Grunewald selects details, copies these, and then enlarges, collages and reproduces them. This process leads to ‘distortions’ – errors, colour transformations, incidents of light, etc. – especially since the artist proceeds ‘manually’: By cutting out by hand and gluing fragments of images together, this ‘manual work’ also becomes visible in the pictures themselves. When copying the pictorial elements, he also uses older copying machines, which, due to inaccuracies, transformations from colour to black-and-white and enlargements, increasingly allow the image to deviate from its original appearance. The result is a collage in which the various layers lie in front of, above or next to each other. After scanning, they are enlarged as a UV print and stretched onto a canvas frame. In the final image, analogue and digital aspects of both the image and the process unite to form an overall composition.

Regarding the material:

In printmaking, the material of the image carrier plays a decisive role. Grunewald’s work thus incorporates the textures and surfaces – and with this the perception – of the printed image on these materials. Different types of paper, films, synthetic canvas, resolutions etc. are the subject of his investigations and are used in the various stages of transformation.

Regarding the technical processes:

Grunewald’s technical means already described above, such as copying, scanning or printing, very strongly involve the moment of repetition or sequencing, but also that of chance. What can be technically controlled, and what, in turn, is falsified or altered? Incidences of light during copying, smudges or scratches on the glass plate of the copier are reflected and become an accepted or provoked design element. But Grunewald goes one step further and continuously finds himself in the field of tension between controlled composition and chance, ordering elements and chaotic structures. He thus also employs techniques used by graphic designers and printers in the 1980s and 90s: with the help of coloured films (e.g. from the Letratone company), with which paint is transferred manually in a dot grid onto designs and thus simulate printing results. Grunewald incorporates these colour films into his collaged paintings, not hiding the manufacturer’s logos and printed type descriptions, but rather incorporating these into his reproduction processes, so that these dot screens and lettering often remain visible in the final picture.

Installation and the reference to the surrounding space:

In the current exhibition – Goods Between Floors – Grunewald collaborated with the architect and scenographer Theo De Meyer. Together, the two developed an exhibition and installation that confronts the spatial conditions of the gallery. Just as, within his creative processes, Grunewald repeatedly juxtaposes different levels, such as original–copy, analogue-digital, manual-mechanical, he has also arranged the exhibition in the gallery on different spatial levels, thus creating multi-layered perspectives. In addition to the gallery’s exhibition space, he has also cleared and incorporated the storage room and office of the gallery located one floor below. Together with Theo De Meyer, he also built a large girder construction on the hoisting crane on the gallery level. Various layers of material (sheets of corrugated plastic, aluminium supports) become visible and float freely, recalling to an altar and serving as a presentation module for his six, equally sized paintings.

Beginning in the storage room, which he painted in the yellow tone of common copy separating paper, an aluminium column rises up from the floor and through the steel grid into the gallery floor above. The separation between the lower and upper floors is thus ostensibly broken through, and the two floors are connected to each other. This yellow-illuminated storeroom cube, in which Grunewald has hung a 2×2-metre-large painting frontally and centrally next to the lamp, radiates onto the forecourt of the gallery and gives the impression of being an energy cell.

In the gallery space itself – in addition to the large, altar-like hanging construction – attention is drawn to a roughly six-metre-long presentation table designed by the artist, which extends diagonally through the gallery, supported by aluminium legs. In a long glass display case, Grunewald presents printed documentation of his works and exhibitions of the last ten years. These are complemented by studio utensils, such as coffee cups, old slices of toast and pieces of sushi – props from both good and bad periods of the artist’s career, which he self-ironically integrates. Documentation of the work and the work itself become one. In this ‘main space’, one also finds two large paintings and a small wall piece.

The gallery’s office has also been emptied by Grunewald and Theo De Meyer, who painted it blue-grey and installed a desk-like construction of the same elements found in the main space, namely a glass display case with aluminium legs. Hanging on the wall of the office is a further painting by the artist.

In Grunewald’s exhibition Goods Between Floors, individual works and documentation are staged within the space as installations and combined on conceptual and spatial levels to form a multi-perspectival treatise.

Though the frame is plastic but it’s a tough one with a little taller top and bottom portions. The metal back panel is fixed into body and doesn’t allow users to remove – hence the battery is not user-removable too.

The 5.5-inch screen features an IPS LCD display with only 720p resolution as mentioned above. Which is quite common in the price range however it helps the system consume less power indeed. The screen size provides around 71% visual area of the front side – commonly referred as screen-to-body ratio.

It makes the pixel density around 267ppi which is not too great at sharpness but mostly acceptable. I personally prefer to have better power backup with a moderate display resolution like this.

On the front, you can see that the lower portion of the screen is just printing the brand name “Huawei” while on the upper portion, there are standard components – an earpiece in the middle, proximity and ambient light sensor, and a front facing camera.

Earpiece/Front-Camera

Front-camera comes with screen-flash feature to brighten up the nearer subject for some better selfies.

Other common components include the micro USB port on the bottom side of the phone along with the speaker grill. The mouthpiece or the primary mic is hidden inside the second grill. On top, there is only a 3.5mm audio jack.

As noted above, Huawei Y7 Prime has aluminium back panel with matte finish. The frame is a solid plastic which doesn’t feel like plastic at all – it’s good. On the upper portion of the back panel, we have a primary camera of 12 megapixels with an LED flash. Right below the camera, we have the fingerprint scanner. Down there on the back we have standard branding and labeling on the phone.

Huawei Y7 Prime – Display

Impressive, it is, on the Huawei Y7 Prime. Being a mid-range in this price range, the display is quite impressive its maximum brightness. It also performed better outdoors and sunlight readability is appreciable. Blacks are too great for this mid-ranger to provide an appealing contrast ratio.

The front glass is quite smooth but really prone to fingerprints. Once it catches the prints, you will find it harder to clean them off.

Overall the readability experience is quite good with reduced reflections when using outdoors.

Operating System / Software

Huawei Y7 Prime runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box and on top it brings its updated software outfit Emotion UI 5.1 – with a lot praises from around the globe. The software has currently been updated to the May 5 security patch. Do not expect further update updates as faster as they are bound to reach Nokia’s latest Android devices.

Huawei has shipped many features in EMUI 5.1 but most of them are limited to the flagship devices only – such as App Twin feature that allows to run certain apps as two instances. For example if you want to run two WhatsApp accounts or two Facebook accounts, that’s the thing for you. Unfortunately, that’s not present in Huawei Y7 Prime or any other mid-ranger.

Multi-user support of Android 7 is also not present in Y7 Prime and only limited to flagship devices – for now at least. Not sure if the company has plans to push the feature in future software updates on Y7 Prime.

Default Home Screen Style

The default user interface of Huawei’s EMUI 5 is pretty straight forward similar to previous iterations with absolutely no app launcher. Everything you install on it, appears on the home screen with its app icon. Multiple home screens, you can add. Organize apps into folders and add widgets to home screens. Huawei sticks to its own kind of interface out-of-the-box which most people have referred to as a clone Apple’s iOS on Android.

The most prominent feature of app drawer comes along in Y7 Prime. If you didn’t know recently, Huawei has added the app drawer support into EMUI 5 software. You can no change the standard Huawei home screen if you don’t like it, to the app drawer mode.

That’s pretty much the same we had in previous EMUI versions but the recent apps view is different in EMUI 5. More like a standard vertical carousel of snapshots but with the hints of memory usage.

EMUI 5 – Notification Panel and Shortcuts

Now where the big visual changes come in EMUI 5 and hence in Y7 Prime, is the notification management. It’s much better with previews and hints on very clean and neat status bar panel. You pull it down the same way you do on any other phone.

Unlike previous version, this panel doesn’t have two separate tabs for notifications and shortcuts. A single swipe-down from the top edge reveals the notifications list with only a first row of shortcuts. Swipe-down once again to expand the shortcuts and push the notification further down.

Notifications appear in the groups by app, a small caret icon is provided on each notification that, if you tap on, will expand the notification to reveal snippets from its content. You can quickly set the app notification setting by swiping-right on the that notification.

The software brings a very nice feature for display optimization to better suit your eyes. Eye Comfort allows you to set display temperature to reduce the brightness and make it warmer or cooler.

Phone Manager

Phone Manager is a must in Huawei’s software interface always. The built-in app comes with the features which include system optimization, data and traffic management, harassment filter for restricting numbers to call you or send you text. With EMUI 5, we have visual changes in the app but experience remains the same mostly.

Fingerprint Scanner

Huawei’s fingerprint scanner is wow. I haven’t tried all of the budget and mid-range devices of the Chinese phone maker with a fingerprint scanner. But as many as I have tried, I found it impressively fast to do things. That goes same for the Huawei Y7 Prime. On the back, below the camera, the fingerprint scanner is positioned to suit your index finger.

Fingerprints can be managed from the settings. Multiple fingers can be enrolled – you are guided through a wizard until your finger is complete identified and confirmed.

Sure the fingerprint scanner can be used for unlocking the device and several other security features throughout the system. It can be used for many other functions as well, for which the fingerprint enrollment is not necessary. You can enable it to take photos, answer phone calls, stop alarm, pull down notification panel, browse photos etc.

System Performance

Huawei Y7 Prime is powered by Qualcomm’s lower mid-range system-on-chip Snapdragon 435, that’s big.LITTLE model of SP 430. The phone is powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz processor with Cortex-A53 cores. To handle graphics and gaming importantly on the phone, the chip features Adreno 505 GPU. Y7 Prime has a 3GB of RAM which is impressive on this mid-ranger.

Interestingly Y7 Prime has 32GB of internal storage which is also a plus point for a mid-range phone. Galaxy J7 Prime only has 16GB which is quite lower to handle heavy games usually take storage in gigabytes. When talking about games, Snapdragon 435 is good in this mid-range smartphone to play games as smooth as you wish your phone to play. It uses its powerful cores to give as better performance while playing games as possible. Subway Surfer, NFS No Limits, Asphalt Xtreme and Modern Combat 5 were the title that the phone was trialed on. All of them were played really well considering the price range of Y7 Prime.

Benchmark scores can tell you where it stands among its class. Y7 Prime was tested with AnTuTu 6, Geekbench 4, Basemark OS II and Basemark X. You can check the following scores in respective order.

Battery Performance

Battery on the other hand is the major factor of Y7 Prime, as Huawei is using it for marketing purposes. So you can easily bet that battery could be the most amazing thing in Y7 Prime. 4000mAh is first meant to be a power bank that can charge other devices as well. But we, here, are supposed to let Y7 Prime consume all the power juice to see how it performs with that power. The power – which is advertised as good amount of backup time the users will have with Y7 Prime.

Company rates the phone to give 20 hours of video playback and 15 hours of browsing. We are looking at a phone that can give you extensive backup time easily for over 1.5 days – with standard usage over 4G/LTE. The standard usage actually includes all-day calling, texting, moderate browsing over WiFi, social apps including twitter, facebook etc and moderate camera usage. A little more extensive usage could still give over 24 hours on one full charge. One thing that I noticed GPS navigation and camera usage get the phone warm more than usual.

Camera

Huawei Y7 Prime sports a 12MP rear camera with 1.25μm pixel sensor. Larger pixels are supposed to get more light, and lets you take great quality photos even under low light conditions. Sure it’s not the only thing in photography, many other things are involved to make a produce a good image. The sensor has Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) which is very common now. It allows you to focus on your subject faster – Huawei claims that Y7 Prime does the job in 0.3s.

On the picture quality, Y7 Prime seems a good performer with quite low noise and better image detail. Foliage on the trees are impressively detailed in good light but it’s equally poor in a little low-light conditions. White balance, on the other hand, is very inconsistent during the dusk.

The camera performed little better indoors but noise levels are sure increased. White balance was good in most conditions but image detail was not as good as in outdoor shots. Artifacts were impressively not present.

Outdoor Shots

In these shots, only the white balance is something which is not right. It’s not consistent even when shot the same scene after only a little shake of the camera – to tell it to concentrate again.

Indoor Low Light

Low light shots weren’t that bad, however the noise levels are a pain. You won’t expect any better from this price range either. Color rendering is fine, just according to the scene. Image detail is lost due to increased noise.

White Balance Issue

As told above the auto white balance is not that intelligent to get the picture from the scene you see with your eyes. Look at the following photos – Left one is auto capture, while the right one was captured with manual white balance set at cloudy, while the day was fully bright under sunlight. The picture on the right reflects the actual temperature on the time it was shot.

8MP front camera on Y7 Prime features beauty mode, that helps remove blemishes and improves brightness. Front camera is just average and results much noisy shots even in bright daylight.

Huawei’s camera work really good with panoramas, that’s something that I always appreciate. It’s smooth to work, fast and accurate with binding and less errors.

Conclusion

Mid-range smartphones aren’t usually impress with their features when you look at them. But if you compare them with the competitor’s offering, you can tell which devices is better for which feature. Y7 Prime in this case is actually much better even when you look at it alone.

Forget the comparison with a Galaxy J7 Prime – it’s expensive and less feature rich than Y7 Prime. Nokia 6 could be a good contender against Y7 Prime with respect to the build quality, performance and price but you’d prefer to have feature rich EMUI 5 software layer.

Huawei Y7 Prime spent a really good time and survived almost every trial. Most important factor is the battery which seems to be completely in sync with software optimization. Huawei has done a good job building this phone in the lower mid-range price category.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom has always been a symbol of power, opulence, beauty, and human achievement. Each generation, since 1925, has been regarded, by many, as the best car in the world, so when a new generation comes along you can bet it’s a big deal.

This is the Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII “the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce ever”, and it’s also quite a looker.

We were treated to a preview of the new Phantom yesterday, and became instantly smitten with it. Here are four reasons you’ll want one as well, excluding the obvious, ‘it’s the most luxurious car in the world’, although, that is a very good reason.

A timeless, modern, design

The first thing you’ll notice about the Phantom VIII is the updated design. It’s certainly more modern and purer, but retains those classic design cues which make it instantly recognisable as a Phantom.

It’s clearly an imposing vehicle – we can see a fair share of Hollywood villains choosing the new Phantom to carry out their evil logistics – but it’s also a thing of beauty and elegance.

Open the doors and you’re ’embraced’ into the vehicle. Once inside, an assistant or valet steps forward and lightly touches the sensor on the door handle so it ‘whispers’ closed of its own accord.

The dash doubles as an art gallery

Rolls-Royce has introduced the concept of ‘The Gallery’, reinterpreting the Phantom’s dashboard into a truly customisable work of art.

Essentially, The Gallery is a large piece of toughened glass that runs the full width of the car. Behind the glass you’ll find the new digital instrument dial, as well a bespoke work of art, either commissioned by the owner or designed in partnership with artists selected by Rolls-Royce.

“In the 18th century, miniatures were highly fashionable and valuable items of art that allowed their owners to carry images of their loved one with them wherever they travelled. I really loved that idea of taking

your art with you, when travelling, and so I acted on it,” continues Taylor. “Now, our clients will be able to do the same.”

One of the most impressive pieces of art is designed by Thorsten Franck. It’s a gold-plated 3D-printed map created using the owner’s DNA. That means that every commission is unique and truly personal.

It’s packed full of technology, all of which is invisible

The new Phantom features a central nervous system which connects and controls everything in the car. Here’s a list of some, but not all, of the assistance systems on board:

These screens communicate all essential driver information, as well as secondary info.The infotainment system is based on BMW’s rotary iDrive system, and can be hidden behind the centre stack when not in use.

Intricate like a mechanical Swiss watch

At the heart of the Phantom VIII is a silent 6.75-litre V12 engine delivering 563bhp.

Underpinning the New Phantom is an all-new aluminium architecture, not derived at all from parent company BMW. The new architecture is lighter, stiffer, quieter and more technologically advanced than previous generations, taking the Roll’s ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ to a whole new level.

This aluminium spaceframe will underpin every future Rolls-Royce.

The Phantom features the latest generation of self-levelling air suspension, which makes millions of calculations every second to ensure the smoothest ride possible, reacting to speed, steering inputs and camera information.

In addition to this, the ‘Flagbearer’ system (named after the men who were required by law to carry a red flag ahead of early motor cars) uses a dual camera system integrated in the windscreen to analysis the road ahead, adjusting suspension proactively rather than reactively up to 62mph.

The 8-speed ZF gearbox also features Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT), to ensure the gearbox is prepared for how the road changes ahead.
