🌹 so he offered to join you! D.B was impressed, he wanted to learn about it. which was weird cause he isn't into this stuff normally but it's you so how can he not get interested?

🌹 you both had a little fun moment trying to dance together, depending on your height it'd be difficult but in the fun way that you get to tease him

🌹 yes I said he wasn't into theatrical stuff, but he definitely did ballet when he was younger! hence why he's pretty flexible aside from how goofily dumb he is he just has a lot of buffs

🌹 he requested to see you dance, you oblige with a smile. when you did your little dance, he was entranced! caught in, allured, any definition of breathless.

🌹 you just twirled around and he can imagine you in a wonderful looking tutu, just looking so elegant whilst you danced and waltzed around. the fact you do this alone just makes him stare in awe, admiration, and affection.

This is going to be so incredibly niche I'm not even sure when it will be complete, but I'm writing a fanfiction sequel to Tanith Lee's Darkness, I from her Blood Opera sequence.

For context, the Scarabae family are a kind of vampire who live very long lives, sometimes have abilities like speaking to the dead, rapid ageing and de-ageing, unusual strength, and inexplicably fast movements (like Malach in Personal Darkness).

When they do die their souls are reincarnated into new bodies, which the living Scarabae and their agents quickly identify and bring into the family.

Their origins began in Ancient Egypt as part of the biblical plagues myth, according to the final book in the series. Even in the modern day and in new bodies the reincarnated Scarabae can somewhat remember this time.

I wanted to follow up what would happen at the end of the last book, and this fic will truly only make sense to anyone who's read it, so I doubt it'll get much interaction. But it's probably my favourite series of books ever and I really want to imagine how the protagonists, Rachaela and Althene, would respond to their grandchild

Competition (Example Post)

For my post, I am going to write about my experience with one of the values Althen mentions in his article: Competition.

I definitely agree that I am a competitive person and that the value of competition plays a big part in who I am. I often find myself comparing myself to others, especially when it comes to sports. I have played and coached sports for nearly my whole life.

Since college, my main sport has been rugby, which I started playing 15 years ago. In this picture, I am practicing tackling (with my husband 😁). Although rugby does bring out a very competitive side in me, I don’t completely agree with Althen that the main point of American competitiveness is to maintain superiority and separateness from others. Actually, I find that I use sports as a way to find people who have the same interests as me. Of course winning feels good, but I think the most important lessons I learn from sports are teamwork, sportsmanship, and community-building.

This was my example blog post for the first blog post in RW3. For those of you in my class, I look forward to reading your posts!

Tanith Lee Project #6 - Personal Darkness, 1994

This is the second in Lee’s Blood Opera series, following Dark Dance. It picks up directly where Dark Dance left off, but is immediately different tonally. 

Where Dark Dance was tight and closed-off, holding us as readers within the claustrophobic space of Rachaela’s consciousness, Personal Darkness immediately expands out - just as the plot concerns the Scarabae leaving their hermetic existence in their mansion, and Ruth wandering restlessly through England and leaving havoc in her wake, so too the narrative voice here seems roaming, entering into the consciousness of one character after another, and sometimes leaving them never to be seen again. 

This makes it a weaker book than Dark Dance, whose strength was in its tightness, but there’s still a lot of interest in what’s going on here, and I still found myself engaged and moved. The chapters from the point of the view of the various minor human characters (many of whom fall prey to Ruth’s indiscriminate blood lust) seem to be acting as a substitute for the mundane details of Rachaela’s life which grounded the plot of Dark Dance, and while I can see the utility in that, since the main plot line here is so much more overly vampiric than in the previous book, I don’t think it quite works, and they take up too much space.

The plot immediately comes alive with the arrival of Malach and Althene, cousins from another branch of the Scarabae family, who form complex and fraught romantic bonds with Ruth and Rachaela respectively. I was interested in both their plot lines, but I loved Althene, who is very elegant and self-possessed, and is the only person we have met so far in the series to treat Rachaela with any kind of respect and talk to her in a halfway sensible manner.

We learn midway through the novel that Althene is trans, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well Lee handles this - Althene’s trans identity is presented with a fair amount of realism even within the fantastical context of the Scarabae family, and the narration consistently genders her correctly even following the reveal. Rachaela reacts with with some amount of shock, and has something of a tendency to fetishize Althene, but that remains within a range that I find pretty emotionally plausible, and the relationship that they build together feels real and good. 

I got attached to Rachaela, and was glad for her to finally have a chance at happiness and meaningful connection. I was also impressed to see Lee writing such a sympathetic representation of a trans lesbian character in the mid-90′s. (Having read the third book, I think things get a lot more concerning there, but we’ll get to that when we get to it.)

The CSA dynamics within Ruth’s plot line get a lot messier in this book, and I am still sorting through what I feel about them. For most of the book, Ruth is an young adolescent (11-13ish) who looks like she’s 17, and gets treated in pervasively sexualized and predatory ways by the men who encounter her, though she herself is manifestly uninterested in sexuality and generally kills the men before they can act on their plans. 

I was reminded, in all the scenes of human men reacting to Ruth’s appearance, of the early scenes of Octavia Butler’s Fledgling, in which Shori, a vampire who looks like a child but has a much older chronological age but also has lost her memory and so is sort of psychologically a child again (...that book is complicated) is an object of desire for the adult man who rescues her. There’s a similar uneasy grossness in both, such that I imagine Butler might have read this book of Lee’s and is trying to engage with these questions about age and sexualization more directly.

Once Ruth is caught by Malach and her violent rampage ended, she is trapped again within an overt grooming/conditioning dynamic (poor girl), by this time by a far more competent and psychologically astute perpetrator than the Scarabae were in Dark Dance; I found those sections of the novel pretty triggering and hard to read, and was moved by what was happening (including Ruth’s heart-breaking attachment to Malach, and the rigidity of his understanding of what that attachment can/should be, which leads to such tragic consequences). But I wasn’t really sure what Lee was trying to do with it, what she’s trying to say about vampires and integenerational sexual abuse. It’s clearly something, but it gets pretty incoherent, and will only get more tangled in the final volume.

I found all of Camillo’s plot line dreadfully boring, which was unfortunate because it kept coming up again.

Pseudo Shork would watch as you danced in the garden, you had been practicing for awhile now even if you didn't have a need to. You couldn't help it, ever since coming here it had been a good coping mechanism to do for you. You were very grateful in meeting a fortunately friendly pseudo shork who is merely curious of how you dance in such a fluid way.

they would love how you spun around so gracefully, your skirt flowing with you within this little thing you are doing. Pseudo wanted to join, so they stood up and approached you. You notice them and smiled as they offered their paw to you, you took their paw even if hesitantly but you knew they wouldn't infect you outright.

and thus, you taught the pink shark gootraxian how to do ballet with you, the basics at least but they did an outstanding job! holding your delicate hat, the shark would dance with you with a toothy grin. it was just happy being like this with you.

as you both seamlessly spun around, Pseudo Shork decided to be mischievous and dipped you down. You would gasp in shock at first but would let out a soft chuckle at the action, surprised that the pink shork even knew how to do that.

as they got you up again, they nudged their snout against your cheek. their ways of showing affection make you laugh everytime.

you were very glad you met this fellow, a fine little thing it was really.

For context; the lamb in their red coat decided for you to be with Narinder, knowing you were just the right person for him to spend time with. One thing led to another and you both wedded not too long ago, maybe a few months or so?

he honestly thought he could NEVER be able to give life, to anything, much less a child!

but seeing your expression looking so delicate and serene, filled with a soft look of joy. it further cemented into his memory that this was his reality, it was too good to be true and yet he can't help but let all his three eyes sting themselves with ichored waters.

Narinder would hug you, not tightly, but he made it firm. He was just so happy, he may have been a former god but he knows deep inside he will always be death no matter who took over his crown.

And right now, he is the death who has helped with life and he's not letting anyone take that away.

when your little kit was born, they would have his fur and they have your eyes, perhaps it was the other way around.

Either way, Narinder was enamoured and immediately cradled your child with love and a huge whiplash of feeling nervous, maybe that was why he paused for a little moment before beholding your child.

he helped you with the little infant and stars, he loved this child with his whole undead heart.

Narinder won't admit it to the Lamb but he thanks them for meeting you , you were by far the greatest thing to happen in his immortalized life along with his newborn.

perhaps he can teach them how to use a scythe or he can teach them how to cook like you even though he's bad at it himself.

for now, he will stare into his child's eyes and see you in them everytime.

he prays to any higher being than him that his child would walk upon roads of gold and pearls.

anyways most of my headcanons for Omen are mostly about his personality, know that I am mostly basing this off of the actual games and some fanmade remakes!

there was a vezteseg game where Omen would sound like he's saying "Welcome Home" so I immediately think he would be a laidback father figure of sort to a lot of people while also being chaotic on his own times, he does greet those who haven't been 'home' in a long while first despite how intimidating he looks as a god.

he is a huge lover of spicy and savory foods, would taste the spiciest chip in the world and ask for a whole bag cause it tastes nice but would say it needs more salt

Omen is also a lover of donuts! he loves all types of donuts!

I wholeheartedly believe that Omen deserves a lot more love from the fandom, I love him a lot myself! one of my F/O's!! love you Omen <3

anyways I would cook up more Omen headcanons but the community lacks a lot of fanart for the stone god so sadly I don't much to say, hope you enjoy this ramble either way!!
