Nine others died in the August 23 plane crash that reportedly killed Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary leader who staged a brief mutiny against Russia’s Defense Ministry in late June. Prigozhin’s death isn’t verified yet, but Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency has confirmed that he was on the passenger list. The other high-profile passenger aboard the doomed flight was Dmitry Utkin, the Wagner Group commander whose callsign is the basis for the company’s very name. Journalists at BBC Russian and the Dossier Center collected information about the other passengers and crew members who perished in the crash. Meduza summarizes these reports.

Valery Chekalov

Chekalov managed multiple companies in St. Petersburg that were linked to Prigozhin. BBC Russia learned that his acquaintances logged his number in their phones as “Valery Evgenievich Syria,” “Valery Chekalov Concord Army,” and “Valery Evgenievich Chekalov from Prigozhin.” From 2011 to 2018, he headed the company “Kollektiv-Servis,” which won a contract with the Defense Ministry’s Commissary in 2012 to supply food to the army. Around the same time, the company registered an entity with a mess hall in Sevastopol, the home of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Chekalov also managed a company created in 2014 called “Neva,” which operated the subsidiary “Evro Polis” — the same Evro Polis that signed a memorandum with the Syrian government in 2016 to recapture and guard oil facilities in exchange for the value of 25 percent of the oil and gas produced there, according to reporting by the news outlet Fontanka. 

Evgeny Makaryan

Born in Magnitogorsk, Makaryan was a former police officer. According to the Dossier Center, he joined Wagner Group in March 2016, serving in its fourth assault detachment in Syria, where he was wounded. BBC Russian calls him one of Prigozhin’s bodyguards.

Sergey Propustin

Propustin is listed at Myrotvorets, the Ukrainian website that names and sometimes doxxes people its authors consider to be “enemies of Ukraine.” Myrotvorets identifies him as a grenadier reconnaissance officer and Wagner Group fighter. According to the Dossier Center, Propustin fought in the Second Chechen War. He reportedly joined Wagner in March 2015 and fought in its second reconnaissance assault detachment, from which Prigozhin would later recruit several of his personal bodyguards. Accordingly, BBC Russian reports that Propustin was another Prigozhin bodyguard.

Alexander Totmin

Myrotvorets lists Totmin too. It’s unknown when he started working for Prigozhin, but journalists learned that he was living in St. Petersburg as recently as 2022. His phone number shows up in shared databases identified as “Sanya Work PMC,” “Totmin Sanya Kontora Piter,” and “Alexander W.” In August 2012, a court in the Altai Krai sentenced him to 300 hours of community service for stealing a chainsaw from a bathhouse located on someone else’s property. In September 2014, he was sentenced to two years of probation for car theft.

Nikolai Matuseev

Researchers at the Dossier Center believe that the Nikolai Matuseev listed among the plane-crash passengers is the same one who joined Wagner Group in January 2017. He was a gunner in the organization’s fourth assault detachment in Syria.

Rustam Karimov

The aircraft’s 29-year-old second pilot, Karimov lived with his wife in Perm. He graduated from the Sasovo Flight School in Russia’s Ryazan region in 2014. Karimov’s father told reporters that his son was unemployed at the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He says Rustam found work three months ago with MNT-Aero, the company that owns the crashed plane, and then moved to St. Petersburg.

Alexey Levshin

Levshin was the plane’s captain. His daughter Anastasia told the news outlet RBC that her father had worked with Prigozhin for many years, though she provided no further details. BBC Russian discovered that Levshin was featured in a 2018 broadcast by the television network Vesti Novosibirsk about an airshow that included military pilots. In the story, he was identified as the navigator of a Sukhoi Su-34 crew.

Kristina Raspopova

Raspopova was the plane’s flight attendant. Thirty-nine years old, she was born in what is now Kazakhstan. According to the news outlet 74.ru, her younger brother is the deputy prosecutor in Yemanzhelinsk, a city in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region. She attended the Moscow Finance and Law University and lived for some time in Yekaterinburg before moving to Moscow. The Telegram channel Baza reports that she relocated to St. Petersburg after finding a job at MNT-Aero.

Posts on social media indicate that Raspopova often traveled abroad, sharing photos from Jamaica, Singapore, Austria, and other countries. Multiple times, she flew aboard a business jet similar to the plane that crashed: an Embraer Legacy with the tail number RA-02857 based at Vnukovo International Airport, which she frequented. According to Baza, Raspopova spoke to her family a few hours before her final flight departed and said that the plane had been delayed for some reason.

Rich Harris, wildlife scientist from Montana University discussed with me in this time (20 of 2011): "I have no new information, only that they are still seen in the Aksai region of western Gansu. I'm in contact with my colleague there, who still gets reliable reports and photos. I attempted to get some small funding to allow he and colleagues to do some additional surveys, but without success". Russian government sources confirmed that Russia is bringing Ukrainian children to Russia and having Russian families adopt them. Russian federal subject (region) Krasnodar Krai’s Family and Childhood Administration posted about a program under which Russian authorities transferred over 1,000 children from Mariupol to Tyumen, Irkutsk, Kemerov, and Altay Krai where Russian families have adopted them. The Administration stated that over 300 children are still waiting to “meet their new families” and that citizens who decide to adopt these children will be provided with a one-time bonus by the state. Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) additionally reported that Russian officials transferred 30 Ukrainian children from Khartsyzk, Ilovaysk, and Zuhres in occupied Donetsk Oblast to Nizhny Novgorod under the guise of having the children participate in youth educational-training programs. The forcible transfer of children of one group to another “with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group“ is a violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

11 Women Who Broke Barriers in the Space Industry

Within the last century, space exploration has blasted off (pun very much intended!), with incredible women behind some major accomplishments. From reaching new heights to developing new technologies, we would not have the knowledge we do about space today without these women. And yet, most people would be challenged to recognize any of these amazing disruptors.

The following ten women are disruptors, and as I discuss in Chapter 4 of my book “Dream Big!: How to Reach for Your Stars,” they have broken barriers and revolutionized the space industry. They also are some of the biggest role models that I have spent my life looking up to. To celebrate Women’s History month, let’s learn more about these incredible women!

1. Valentina Tereshkova, Russian Cosmonaut

Valentina Tereshkova is a Russian Cosmonaut who, in 1963, made history as the first woman to fly in space. She launched on the Vostok 6 mission when she was only 26 years old, and to this day, she remains the youngest woman to have flown in space. On this mission, Tereshkova also flew solo, something no other woman in history has done.

Her Journey

Before becoming a cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova worked at a textile factory. While she was working, she attended school at the Light Industry Technical School and graduated in 1960. During this time, Tereshkova also picked up skydiving and was a competitive parachutist.

It was her skydiving and parachuting experience that caught the attention of the Soviet Union and their Vostok program. (The Vostok program was a human spaceflight program conducted by the Soviet Union.) Tereshkova was selected to be a cosmonaut in 1962, along with four other women. Upon her selection, she was given the rank of private in the Soviet Air Forces and later went on to earn the ranks of both lieutenant and captain.

After months of training, Tereshkova launched on her first mission, Vostok 6, on June 16, 1963. She spent over two days in space and orbited the Earth 48 times. During this time, she gathered data on the effects of space travel on women. She descended back to Earth safely on June 19 near the local villages of the Altai Krai. The Altai Krai even made dinner for her and helped her out of her spacesuit!

Why I Admire Her

Valentina Tereshkova broke numerous barriers. In her travels to space, she went somewhere no woman has gone before (literally)! At the time, her hours logged in space were more than the combined times of all the American astronauts who had flown before her. She also made history at only 26 years old, showing that age isn’t a limit! Tereshkova’s mission proved women were as capable of participating in space travel as their male counterparts were.

My journey to becoming an astronaut may not have been possible without Valentina Tereshkova. She has inspired me to reach new heights and go somewhere else no woman has gone before – Mars. I greatly admire Tereshkova’s perseverance through adversity. At the time, no one thought a woman could make a successful astronaut, but she sure proved them wrong!

Russian Journalist Maria Ponomarenko Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison Amid Crackdown on War Reporting Feb 16, 2023

"A Russian court on Wednesday sentenced journalist Maria Ponomarenko to six years in a penal colony for “spreading false information” after she accused Russian forces of bombing a theater in Mariupol, Ukraine, last March. Amnesty International has accused Russia of a war crime over the bombing, which killed hundreds of people. Moscow blamed the explosion on Ukrainian nationalists. Addressing the court before her sentencing, Ponomarenko concluded with the defiant words, “No totalitarian regime has ever been as strong as before its collapse.”

"On 15 February, Leninsky District Court of Barnaul, Altay Kray, sentenced Maria Ponomarenko, a journalist with RusNews online media, to six years in a penal colony after finding her guilty of disseminating “knowingly false information” about the Russian Armed Forces, a new “crime” recently introduced as Article 207.3 to the Russian Criminal Code. She had been held in pre-trial detention since 24 April 2022.

In addition, she is prohibited from engaging in journalistic activities for five years after serving her sentence. The prosecution asked the court to sentence her to nine years in prison for posting a publication in the “Tsenzury net” (No Censorship) Telegram-channel. In it she wrote about the deaths of civilians hiding in a theatre in Mariupol after it was hit by a Russian airstrike. Twelve of those who died in the attack were identified by Amnesty International in a detailed report published in June 2022."

On September 6, the Moscow Regional Court sentenced two Kaliningrad doctors — Yelena Belaya and Elina Sushkevich — to 9.5 and 9 years in prison, respectively. The women were charged with deliberately killing a premature baby to keep their hospital’s official infant mortality rate low. They were originally acquitted by a jury in their home region back in 2020, but when the Russian Attorney General's Office took issue with the verdict, the case was transferred to Moscow, where the doctors were found guilty. Meduza tells the story of a ruling medical professionals say will be disastrous for the quality of Russian healthcare.

‘This kind of trial happens once a decade’

It’s rare for doctors to be charged with intentionally killing a patient by interfering with treatment in Russia. Outside of the Kaliningrad case, there are only two examples on record: one in Russia’s Kaluga region and one in its Altai Krai. In the Altai Krai, doctor Anatoly Demchuk and NICU head Alexey Katashev were charged with conspiring to kill an infant as well as with abuse of authority. Their case was heard by a jury, which acquitted the doctors. After that, Russia’s Attorney General appealed the sentence and sent the case for a retrial. Once again, the doctors were found innocent.

“The Sushkevich case is a unique one. Usually, when doctors overlook something and it has serious consequences, they’re charged with negligence. But in this case, they’re specifically being [accused] of deliberate murder. It’s something completely new,” said lawyer Andrey Zolotukhin.

Medical lawyer Yulia Kazantseva, who’s been working on these types of cases for 14 years (usually representing the injured party), agreed. “Cases like Sushkevich happen only once a decade,” she said.

Elina Sushkevich’s lawyer, Andrey Zolotukhin, said he had no doubt his client would be given a jail sentence — and he assumed it would be about 15 years. “By law, the judge can reject the jury’s verdict, acquit the defendant, send the case back [to the prosecution], or dissolve the jury and call a new one. But in our case, it was clear the judge would convict,” he said.

Multiple Russian neonatologists have left the field as a result of the Kaliningrad case. Members of the Russia Neonatologists’ Society warn that the case will have serious consequences for Russian medicine as a whole:

Every year, the number of “medical” criminal trials goes up. Working as a doctor is becoming downright scary. It’s become easier to left the medical profession altogether than to try to try to save the lives of people who are in critical condition, because if you fail for reasons that are out of your control, you’ll be interrogated by investigators who are trained to find serial killers but who, for obvious reasons, have no medical knowledge. When that's the approach they take with doctors, the quality of Russian healthcare is unlikely to improve, and the personnel shortage (which many regions, including the Kaliningrad region, are currently suffering from) will get worse.

I love my family, but sometimes it drives my crazy and I wanna kill somebody! Since last summer next to my family live new neighbors - 2 brothers from Altai Krai, both of my age. At first it was just my father who told me what Oleg (one of the neighbors) is a nice guy and that I should get him know better. And once my wonderful daddy even told that guy that he can ask me out. Few months ago my mother joined my father. Today I went to visit my family. My mother was at the kitchen when I came, backing pancakes. And first thing she told me was “Oleg likes you, you should date him”. WTF?! - was my first thought. But I’m polite girl and I told my mum that I’m not interested in any relationship, at all. And she told me “That’s not right. Woman is created to have family and kids!” WTF?????????? And when I was at the room with my brother he also told me about Oleg. And now I really want to kill somebody! Or get drunk. Whatever I just don’t want to visit my family again. And listen to this crap. I’m not interested. Leave me alone!!!!! Hate this situation and the attitude of my family. Even my brother don’t want to accept my point of view.
