Even the chosen names for the Brasilian (I still don't know if 'Santo' is supposed to be Portuguese) are very weird.
Malik is a muslim name. If you're saying this character is the son of a recently enslaved women and a white portuguese man... who the fuck named him that. Sure it means King but he's clearly shown to be Catholic (the cross) and so his father wouldn't have named him that. And if his mom was Dahomey she wouldn't have either?
Could portuguese speakers descendent of the African slave trade have muslim names? 100%. There were plently of African Muslims. His mother is Dahomey however.
Idk it would have been quite powerful maybe to have Santo call him a very Christian Portuguese name (his legal named given to him by his father) and then have him tell Nawi the name his mother called him. In her native tongue.
(Also Santo is a ridiculous name but I'm chosing to believe his name is Santiago and he's just the type of asshole to give himself that nickname.)
#jo babbles once again#idk I feel like Malik's character could have been really really strong if they colaborated with a Brasilian Historian and a Brasilian actor#Also it would have been really nice if Santo and Malik's actors were fluent in Pt and you could see their different patterns of speach#i know the movie is not about them!#but they role didn't have to be bigger for it to be better#and to serve more to the message of the story
