(Spoilers for the last three Ace Attorney games)
This joke has been sitting in my mind for ages and I finally decided to draw it:
For those who can't read my handwriting:
Apollo: I'm glad you're not guilty Nick! I've got news for you! I just discovered that Lamiroir is my mother, and Trucy is my half-sister and Sahdmadhi is my foster brother, and Gumshoe is my dog, and Mr Hat is my old Hoover vacuum cleaner, and ―
Phoenix: Gee, is this "Ace Attorney... or "Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy"?
It is a reference probably no one will get to a panel from an old Mad magazine Star Wars parody:
I wanted to make a Professor Layton version based on Azran Legacy, but the I felt the Ace Attorney version would be funnier. In honour of the original idea, I decided to reference AL in place of the TV show in the original.
Bonus scene:
Athena: Wasn't it lucky that Phoenix and Edgeworth were only second cousins... and could get married?!
Apollo: Yeah, great! But what a strange wedding this is! I've never ushered at a wedding where the guests were divided into THREE groups... The BRIDE's side of the family... the GROOM's side of the family... and the DEAD side of the family!!
I somehow put too much effort into this and not enough.
The referenced panel:
#Edgeworth and Phoenix are related through Apollo somehow#hence the 'second cousins' thing#Ace Attorney#Apollo Justice#The revelations at the end of Azran Legacy are crazy#but Apollo's three different backstories are even worse#fun fact: 50% of my Star Wars knowledge came from this comic#I've never watched a SW film all the way through#I always miss the start or the end#Also Phoenix is indeed wearing a wedding dress#and holding a bouquet#I honestly imagine they would in fact have a civil ceremony in the first courtroom they faced off in#and they would channel Mia and Gregory#my art#definitely not my finest work but I really did not want to put any more effort than I already had into this very dumb joke

My Thoughts on the Second Semi Final of Eurovision 2017
1. I came into this expecting to only care about three of the performances. I ended up liking almost all of them.
2. ALMOST EVERYBODY WORE WHITE. MOST OF THE WOMEN LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE GETTING MARRIED.
3. Ukraine opened the show with a series of covers of three famous Eurovision songs: "Euphoria" by Loreen, "Fairytale", by Alexander Rybak, and "Rise Like A Phoenix" by Conchita Wurst. It was...interesting. I spent most of that performance screaming "WHAT IS HAPPENING???"
4. Serbia: Tijana Bogićević - In Too Deep First woman wearing what looked like a wedding dress, only the skirt looked like it was made out of a transparent shower curtain. I didn't care for the song, but the stage was pretty.
5. Austria: Nathan Trent - Running On Air The song was very happy-sounding, and he had a great voice. I was a bit confused about the choice of props though. He started the song sitting on a giant crescent moon. He legitimately looked like the Dreamworks logo. Also, HE WORE WHITE.
6. FYR Macedonia: Jana Burčeska - Dance Alone I didn't like the song when i listened to it during the months leading up to the contest, but her performance was better than I was expecting. The song gave me 80's/90's vibes, and the stage made her look like she was standing in the middle of a big city with flashing lights. Also, she was the first performer who wore a different color besides white: black.
7. Malta: Claudia Faniello - Breathlessly Second woman who wore what looked like a wedding dress. Also, the song was a bit boring. I didn't really care for this performance.
8. Romania: Ilinca ft. Alex Florea - Yodel It! RAPPING...AND YODELING. Let me tell you something about this here song. When I first heard it, I couldn't stop laughing. If anyone knows me, they know that stupid/silly/ridiculous things sum up my sense of humor. However, once you get over the immediate "what the hell is this, Romania?" You start to realize that the song actually isn't that bad. I went from thinking this song was hilarious to thinking this song was generally good within like two months. The only thing is, I'm basing this off of the original studio version of the song, where Ilinca and Alex's vocals are on point. In this performance...they weren't. So naturally, I went back to enjoying this song because I thought it was hilarious. Either way, LOVED it.
9. The Netherlands: OG3NE - Lights and Shadows OH MY GOD, AMAZING VOCALS! For those who don't know, OG3NE is a trio of three women. Think of like Destiny's Child or Fifth Harmony. I didn't like this song coming into the competition, but oh my lord did this women blow me away.
10. Hungary: Joci Pápai - Origo A big muscular dude with a beard and a manbun singing and rapping in Hungarian while he plays vase, dances with a woman on stage, and a guy plays a violin on a separate stage in the middle of the arena. Overall great performance.
11. Denmark: Anja - Where I Am THIS. GIRL. RIGHT. HERE. I have conflicted feelings, and I hate it (look at my profile picture). I'm slightly disappointed but still proud of her. If you look up her national final performance (please do, it's amazing), her vocals were out of this world, and everything was perfect. In this performance, it wasn't as great. She didn't suck, I will be the first to say, she didn't suck AT ALL. BUT, it wasn't what I was expecting. The choreography wasn't all that great, and the backup singers were ruining the song.
12. Ireland: Brendan Murray - Dying To Try I wasn't feeling this one. The song didn't do it for me, and his singing voice sounds like he's 12-years-old. I did like how he sang on a hot air balloon though.
13. San Marino: Valentina Monetta and Jimmie Wilson - Spirit of the Night Once again, San Marino comes to Eurovision with...disco. The stage was pretty, but the song just wasn't that good.
14. Croatia: Jacques Houdek - My Friend Oh boy...THIS GUY SANG A DUET BY HIMSELF. HE SANG THIS SONG WITH TWO DIFFERENT VOICES: a high pitched, "soulful" voice, and a very deep opera voice. I spent most of the performance with my jaw dropped.
15. Norway: JOWST - Grab The Moment I liked the song, and I loved how the band members wore masks with LED's on it. The performance reminded me of Daft Punk. I'm a bit conflicted on my feelings toward the effects on the camera though. They purposefully made it fuzzy at points, to make it look like your broadcast was being hacked.
16. Switzerland: Timebelle - Apollo This woman looked like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Big puffy bright yellow dress, and long brown hair. I didn't like the song, but the stage was pretty. Still, I couldn't watch the performance without thinking "Okay...so where's Beast?"
17. Belarus: Naviband - Story Of My Life This performance was adorable! They were singing and dancing around on a boat, and the song was very happy-sounding. However, once again, the singers wore white.
18. Bulgaria: Kristian Kostov - Beautiful Mess The song was...alright. I liked it, but it wasn't amazing.
19. Lithuania: Fusedmarc - Rain Of Revolution Ugh...no.
20. Estonia: Koit Toome & Laura - Verona Another wedding dress. The song was alright. Didn't really appeal to me.
COUNTRIES THAT QUALIFIED FOR THE FINALS 1. Bulgaria 2. Belarus 3. Croatia 4. Hungary 5. Denmark 6. Israel 7. Romania 8. Norway 9. The Netherlands 10. Austria
COUNTRIES THAT DID NOT QUALIFY 1. Estonia 2. FYR Macedonia 3. Ireland 4. Lithuania 5. Malta 6. San Marino 7. Serbia 8. Switzerland
21. I'm overall satisfied with the results. Most of the performances I thought deserved to go to the Grand Final qualified. The only thing I'm upset about is FYR Macedonia not qualifying, because they had indeed improved since their National Final performances and rehearsals. Other than that, I'm not as upset as I was after results of the first Semi Final.
22. I don't know if it was just a coincidence, or if there was some sort of secret agreement by all of the countries. But remember what I said about most of the singers wearing wedding dresses? During the show, FYR Macedonia's singer talked about her pregnancy, and the father of her child proposed to her on live TV.
All that's left is the Grand Final on Saturday, and with all of these performances I've seen, I'm expecting it to be nothing less of amazing.

What to try to with wedding dress after the wedding
A wedding dress indeed features excellent sentimental value. All those hours spent finding the dress, fitting, and within the end, wearing it on your big day will cause you to be very attached to the robe. You'll inevitably be sad to require it off and to understand that your day is over.
Now that you have said 'I do,' unwrapped the presents and finished off those honeymoon plans, you began to wonder – what should I do with my wedding dress?
There are several belongings you can do together with your wedding dress. You'll keep it, sell it, professionally preserve it or reuse it. We've found some brilliant ways to rework your wedding dress but to stay it forever in your memory.
Do you need to keep your wedding dress? First of all, many ladies wonder – do they need to stay married? You'll, but it's optional. Many ladies keep it forever as a treasure, a memory of their day.
However, not all women are emotionally attached to their wedding dresses. You'll either sell or donate your dress. There's no right or wrong thing to try to do together with your dress. But, there are many creative ways to make it usable again. Read more down below and tell us what one thinks.
Sell it -Selling Your wedding dress. If you'd wish to add some extra cash to your checking account and you're into selling your wedding dress, then roll in the hay. It's best to use many various online platforms to sell your clothing. This will be pretty handy for a few since they will see how the dress looks on you. Post tons of photos, and make your offer.
Don't forget to say the fabric, condition of the dress, and possible damages (if there are some). You'll even organize fittings, just don't roll in the hay reception. Find another place, and don't write your info on any website.
Donate it – Donate Your wedding dress to Charity. In the previous couple of years, many brides decided to donate instead of selling their wedding gowns. That's for an excellent cause, and that we think you ought to consider this feature also.
Not only you'll be giving your dress to somebody who needs it but can't afford it, but you'll also raise funds for charity. Ask your local shops, charity organizations, and search online places that sell second-hand wedding dresses if they might accept yours.
Convert it – Dye it into other colors. Are you feeling creative? You'll convert your wedding dress into a new gown. If your seamstress is skilled enough, you'll ask her to show your dress into a nightgown or to rework it entirely for somebody younger – your nieces or kids.
Dyeing your dress into another color is yet one more great thanks to providing it another lease of life. This is often an eco-friendly solution and can prolong the lifetime of your wedding dress, instead of throwing it away.
Reuse it – Preserve Your wedding dress. Another handy solution, if you're getting to wear your wedding dress again, is to reuse it. You'll wear it during renewing your vows together with your partner or provide it to a different relative for his or her day.
To reuse your wedding dress, you would like to store it properly. Keep it in a suitable box, with all necessary items alongside which will prevent mold and discoloration.
Frame it – Alter Your wedding dress You can frame your wedding dress and switch it into a bit of art. Imagine – an enormous frame in your front room or bedroom that you simply can admire all day long.
This is not employment for you to try to do alone. You ought to hire professionals to seal, protect, and frame your wedding dress. This can be an ideal and unique decoration for your house. Confirm to form enough space on the wall for your oversized frame.
Have a celebration They are quite exciting thanks to making a celebration for your wedding dress once more. You'll have a party! Invite all of your girlfriends and tell them to wear their wedding dresses if they still have them. You'll recreate that famous scene from Friends, drink your favorite cocktails, and luxuriate in each other's company.
Make Home Decor Items If you're feeling crafty and you wish DIY items around the house, then look no further than your wedding dress. You'll be surprised what percentage of various things you'll figure out of your gown.
If you're close to becoming a parent, believe in making tulle cribs hanging. It'll match perfectly into a newborn room. Confirm your dress is dry-cleaned first. You'll also try making a blanket and doll clothing for your daughter to play with.
Believe it or not, a wedding dress can become a beautiful pillowcase. Options are endless – you'll make pillows for the front room, bedroom or turn the dress into a hoop bearer pillow for your friend's wedding.
Think about and determine tutorials on the way to make this stuff as well:
Clutch Necklace Scarf Christmas decoration Think Carefully – Trash it or Not?
Whatever you propose to try to do together with your dress is your decision. However, there's a well-liked way that many women tried, and it's called trashing the dress. You get photos along the way, with you covered in paint, wearing a gown jumping during a sea.
Even though it is often cute, we don't advise you to waste your dress like that. Ruining it with neon paint then jumping into the ocean isn't an eco-friendly way of getting your wedding dress.
Instead, try a number of this stuff you've just examined. Sell, donate, give to your cousin or just, store it. But please, don't trash your dress. Be sustainable and make something nice out of it.

Ghost Wedding 㝠婚

August 2018
I just bought a painting of a beautiful girl dressed in Chinese marriage gown from Shanghai, China. I have been thinking for a long time where is a good place to hang it. Finally, I decided to hang it on the wall facing my bed. This is a large painting. The background of which is a garden pavilion. There is a red plum tree behind the pavilion. There are a round table and four chairs in the middle of the pavilion. A dish of fruit, a pot of tea and a cup are placed on the round table. Inside the pavilion, there sits a young girl who appears to be eighteen years old. She wears a red see-through thin silk scarf over her head. Through the scarf, you can see a pretty innocent young girl. Her hair is combed up high like a hat. Her hair is filled with gold jewelry. She also wears an ivory head pin consisting a string of pearls. Four of them are white and the bottom one is black. Strangely enough, if you focus on the black one, you will feel it is glittering.
The beautiful girl in the painting is wearing a traditional wedding dress in red color. The dress is embroidered with golden thread to show patterns of a dragon and a Phoenix. She also wears a dragon and Phoenix gold necklace. She looks elegant with such a made up. But if you pay attention to her eyes, you will feel there is a hidden sadness. I find it very strange that a bride should be joyful instead of being sad.
Looking at the beautiful girl in the painting, I felt like I have known her before. But I cannot remember where I might have met her.
In fact, I only saw this painting the first time during my recent tour of visiting a water village in the suburb of Shanghai. This place of interest has its special characteristics. The village is surrounded by a narrow river. On both banks, there are single-storey houses. You can see women washing clothes and hanging them on the bamboo poles to dry on the roof of the houses.
Boats are their major means of transportations. The roads in front of the houses are very narrow. They are only suitable for villagers to walk by. The road could accommodate a limited number of bicycles.
The houses on both sides of the road are used for both business and residence. Each one is no more than three hundred feet in size. The front of the house is used as shops and the back as residence.
Most of the shops sell handicrafts or dried seafood, and the smell from the dried seafood can be unpleasant. Occasionally there is a small gallery between seafood shops. I found my picture hanging in one of these galleries for sale. I still remember the shop is called "Chung Hing Gallery.” The artist is called Au Chung Hing. He paints and sells his paintings in the same shop.
At my first glance of the painting, I felt the eyes of the girl in the picture are telling me she has a lot to share with me but she wants me to take her home before she explains everything to me. But I did not intend to buy the painting. So I walked out of the gallery. Before I took the first step to leave, I suddenly heard a soft and sad voice, whispering to me, “Sir, take me home." I do not believe in hallucinations, and I continued to move forward to leave the shop. But the voice constantly echoed in my mind, and I also felt as if the bride in the painting followed me. I shook my head and thought I could get rid of this illusion, but the more I wanted to get rid of it, the more vividly the girl reappearing in my mind. Finally I stepped back to the gallery and bought the painting.
Now lying in bed and looking at the painting hanging on the wall, I feel happy and calm inside myself. I felt comfortable having a beautiful girl accompanying me in my sleep. Such feeling is inevitably sweet.
Since I had a busy day, It was time to go to bed. When I turned off the lights and looked at the painting, I could see no girl anymore, but the black pearl was shining like a star in the sky. Gradually the black pearl becoming an infinite bright star and multiplied by glittering stars.
Strangely, the shiny stars did not bother me but made me sleep peacefully. I did not know how long I have been sleeping. I felt someone is tapping me. Although I realized someone pushes me gently, I did not respond. I just turned around and continued my sweet dream. But the seemingly patted hand on my shoulder still keeps on pushing me. I finally opened my eyes slightly, and I saw a girl sitting on the side of my bed. I was scared to death. Immediately the girl disappeared and I told my self it must be just a bad dream.
Next night, while I was sleeping, someone was whispering to me, “ it is time to wake up.” I did not open my eyes but continue to sleep. Yet someone was pushing me to get up. I finally opened my eyes and looked around. I immediately was scared to death. I saw a ghost floating around in the room. Such experience
gave me a chilling feeling. Subconsciously I turned on the bedside lamp. As soon as the lamp light was on, I did not see any ghost.
The same terrified experience repeated on a few consecutive nights. Each time I was scared to death. So tonight I kept the light on. But honestly I could not sleep with the lights on. In the end, I still turned the lights off to force me to sleep. Yet, this time, I felt someone is trying to wake me up again. I heard a whisper which says, “Do not turn on the lights, I will not harm you." Reluctantly I opened my eyes and discovered a female corpse lying next to me. I immediately scream aloud.
I haven’t had a good sleep for a few nights. I finally decided to keep the lights at the bathroom on. Hopefully doing some reading will make me sleep soundly.
Unfortunately, I still could sleep and it is now 2:00 am in the morning. So I decided to turn off the lights at the bathroom. I got up and walked to the bathroom. As soon as I switched off the lights, I saw the bride from the painting inside the mirror. I was so scared that I fell onto the floor. I faded away but the bride held me up. She was looking at me with her eyes full of self pity and helplessness.
I was trembling and became speechless. The bride gently said to me, "Do not be afraid, I will not harm you and come with me."
She held my hand and helped me get up from the floor. I then walked slowly with her. She led me through a beautiful garden. The place is deserted and there is no other people in the garden except a red plum tree. We passed a pond and came to a gazebo with a round table and four chairs in the middle of the pavilion. She asked me to sit down with her.
Although with a scarf over her head, I could see a glimpse of her tears slowly flowing down. I really wanted to comfort her, but I did not know what to say. Fortunately, she began to speak, "Sir, when I saw you the first time, I know you are a good man. We are destined to meet and God sends you to help me fulfill my oath." Her voice is soft but sad,”I know you were also born in Zhou Village but you left there when you were young."
"Yes," I answered. "who are you?"
"My name is Xiao Feng and I am from Zhou Village. Tinping from the same village was childhood sweetheart. When I was only twelve years old, Tinping and I were running in a wild field. There was a wild dog chasing us, I was terrified.
Although the dog looked lovely, I was afraid of dogs. Tinping held me tight and talked to the dog with a low and friendly voice, “ Little dog, be nice to Xiao Feng.”
The little dog was very friendly and it wagged its tail as if it was welcoming us.
Tinping turned to me and said,” Don’t be afraid. The dog is friendly. Be brave and pad and stroke it.”
Tinping then held my hand to stroke the dog lightly. The little dog looked at me as if it was saying,” Don’t be afraid. Pretty girl. I am a friendly dog.”
Tinping mischievously talked to the dog, “ My little beloved dog, can you be our witness. When I grow up, I will marry this pretty girl.” Then, he turned around and kissed me the first time.
I pushed him away but the dog barked and wagged its tail. Then it ran away. I too, started to run away from Tinping.
That was our vow to get married. Unfortunately my father forced me to marry the son of his good friend. It was an arranged marriage when I was born. Both parents agreed to the marriage "
“What did you say? There is still such an arranged marriage in today’s world.” I couldn’t believe what I heard.
"Indeed it was true in those days. On my wedding day, I killed myself with a pair of scissors when the marriage cart stopped at the front door of my parents in law. My sweetheart was heartbroken that he hung himself on the tree in front of my parents in law ‘s house that night," said Xiao Feng sobbing as she finished her tragic story.
Such a touching story made me weep for them too. "Mr. Zhao, can you do one thing for us." Said Xiao Feng.
"What, if I can, I will help you." I sympathized with her. She told me what I needed to do.
The next morning, I clearly remember what happened last night. I was wondering if I was just dreaming. Or did I make a promise that must be carried out. I looked at the beautiful girl of the painting hoping she would tell me what happened last night. But she did not say anything. Yet I have to ask her clearly, “ Are you Xiao Feng ?"
She did not answer me but that black pearl seemed to flash a few times. I did not believe my eyes. I asked again a few more times, the results were the same. The black pearl really shone each time.
I immediately went to buy train tickets to go to Zhou Village. I obeyed Xiao Fung’s instructions. I rolled up the painting and used an oil paper umbrella to protect the sun from shining onto the painting,.
I could shut down the umbrella when on board the train. As soon as getting off the train, I did opened the umbrella again to protect Xiao Feng. We then walked about half a mile to get to the Zhou Village.
The Zhao family belongs to a high class society. Their front entrance has a staircase of five steps. The top of the main door reads “ Family of Zhou”. There are two poems on both sides of the door. On the left reads" Friends haven’t visited yet.” The right reads “Your house is right in the corner.”
The wooden door is red. I knocked the door a few times. Finally a servant came out to open the door.
“ Excuse me, who are you looking for?” The servant asked me politely.
"I am representing Miss Zhou to pay respect to Mater Zhou.” I replied in a polite way.
The servant asked again in horror. I repeated my answer again.
The servant invited me to enter the house. I still held up the oil paper umbrella to protect the painting. Walking through the front yard, I noticed the flowers were elegantly taken care of. The pavilion looked the same as the one in the painting. Even the blossoming red plum tree also looks exactly the same. Finally we entered the main living room. I could fold up the paper oil umbrella. I then could put down the painting on a chair.
Mr. and Mrs. Zhou came out to greet me. The first thing they asked me was how I got to meet Xiao Feng. I truthfully told them the whole story and opened the painting to show them Xiao Feng. As soon they saw the picture, Mrs Zhao cried loudly.
I comforted her, I told them Xiao Feng’s request was to marry Tin-ping.
Early the next morning, Mr. Zhou had to rush to Tinping’s parents' house to discuss the ceremony of marriage. The two families after serious consideration, they decided to hold the marriage ceremony on that day because they believed that day was s good day for marriage. Immediately they held a wedding ceremony at Tin-ping’s family home.
When the marriage ceremony starts, both parents sat in the middle of their family room. Two big paper dolls were used represent the bride and the groom. They served tea to the parents first. Then they followed the tradition to thank heaven first, then the parents and finally thanked each other to be able to go through both thick and thin for thousand years to come.
After these proceedings, the drum players started the music. Xiao Feng’s coffin was being carried to Tin-ping’s tomb for them to be buried together. All a sudden, a little dog ran around and then stopped in front of the graves. It wagged its tail and barked quietly. After that, it ran away.
Then both parents asked the monks to start singing the prayers. To serve the dead, both families have prepared wine and rice, sweet cakes, meat buns, a big roasted whole pig, whole cooked chickens with heads and tails, vegetables etc. there were a few more local dishes.
Friends and family burned paper money or gifts to the dead. These gifts included a big paper house, a few servants, a paper carriage cart and four paper carriage servants. In addition, they burned paper boxes of jewelry.
After the funeral ceremony was completed, Xiao Feng’s parents asked me to burn Xiao Fend’s painting in order to make her Rest In Peace. Originally, I wanted to keep Xiao Feng’s painting. Finally I reluctantly agreed to do so. However, I would like to see the painting once more. When I opened the painting, Xiao Feng’s parents looked at it the last time. Xiao Feng’s mother said, "Do you see it? Xiao Feng’s eyes are no longer sad , but with some happy smile."
I didn’t understand why Xiao Feng's mother could see Xiao Feng’s eyes turned into a smile as I found Xiao Feng no longer existing in the painting.

Collecting Hollywood Movie Memorabilia
Once Upon a Time at MGM
Vintage Original Hollywood Movie Memorabilia, as an investment-worthy collectibles category, came of age in 1970 when MGM sold the contents of seven sound stages to auctioneer David Weisz for the ridiculous sum of $1.5 million. Included in the lot were over 350,000 costumes, furniture and decorative-art related items, automobiles, busses, trains, tanks, boats, ships, airplanes and space capsules that had been designed and built or purchased to create the background tapestry of hundreds of the studio’s productions.
Weisz “recouped eight times” what he had paid from eager nostalgia enthusiasts. The centerpiece of the auction, Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz, sold for the then-astronomical price of $15,000. Actress Debbie Reynolds spent a reported $600,000 to purchase thousands of items, which became the foundation of Reynolds’ enormous collection. A few of the highlights of items sold were: the full-size sailing ship from Mutiny on the Bounty, Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding gown worn in Father of the Bride, Clark Gable’s trench coat worn in several films, a group of swimsuits worn by Esther Williams, Johnny Weissmuller’s loin cloth worn in Tarzan films of the 1940s. and the Cowardly Lion costume from The Wizard of Oz. The unsold items, “… truckloads of costume sketches, movie stills and other memorabilia were sent to the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas to be sold in the gift shop and used as hotel decorations”. The auction catalogs have now themselves become sought-after collectibles.
For a glimpse of what went on at that fabled auction take a look at this period video describing it:
What a Pair of Ruby Slippers Can Do
Besides taking you home to Kansas, Dorothy’s $15,000 ruby slippers made it clear to film enthusiasts and collectors that vintage original movie memorabilia, including movie posters, lobby cards, move star photographs and production shots, film scripts, costumes, costume and set designs, props, marketing materials––in fact almost any movie-related or screen-seen object, had value and was worth collecting. This became abundantly clear in the late 1980s when another pair of Dorothy’s footwear sold for $165,000, Charlie Chaplin’s signature hat and cane sold for $150,000, and Marilyn Monroe’s trademark halter-top dress, worn in the The Seven Year Itch (seen above), sold for a comparable price.
The ”Big Boys” Take Notice
With ever-increasing prices being paid for vintage original Hollywood movie memorabilia, larger auction houses such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Bonhams created their own departments devoted to its curation and sale. Today, Hollywood movie memorabilia is recognized as an important collectable category with ever-escalating hammer prices. This has caused Wall Street investment bankers and collectors to acknowledge that Hollywood movie memorabilia is as worthy an asset investment as fine art or the collection of automobiles.
The Importance of “Provenance”
A vital factor in buying and selling Vintage Original Hollywood Movie Memorabilia is determined by an item’s provenance and valuation. These two factors are determined through:
Authentication – establishing a piece as a vintage original and not a reproduction, the date it was issued and any additional history or documentation it might possess.
Evaluation — giving an accurate evaluation of the condition of the piece so that a prospective buyer has a clear and accurate understanding of the condition of their potential purchase.
Curatorial Process
WalterFilm’s Curatorial Process involves both Authentication and Evaluation and we provide our clients with a Certificate of Authenticity describing such for every piece we sell.
Hollywood’s 12 Most Expensive Pieces of Movie Memorabilia
Here are the 12 most expensive pieces of Hollywood Movie Memorabilia as detailed in this excellent ScreenRant Article by Cailin Coane, dated January 4, 2017.
#1 MARILYN MONROE’S DRESS (THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH) – $4.6 MILLION
Marilyn Monroe’s white ivory cocktail dress is one of the most famous dresses in history, for the moment that became one of the twentieth century’s most iconic images. In The Seven Year Itch (1955), Monroe’s character steps onto a grate in the sidewalk, making her dress fly up to expose her legs. The moment has been parodied in everything from Shrek 2 to Blades of Glory, and it helped etch Monroe permanently into Hollywood history.
The scene originally was to be shot outside the Trans-Lux 52nd Street Theatre at 1:00 am, but the cameras and Monroe caught the attention of hundreds of fans, ruining the shot. Director Billy Wilder had to reshoot the scene on a set at 20th Century Fox.
Like Audrey Hepburn’s ascot dress, Monroe’s dress sold as part of the late Debbie Reynolds’ Hollywood collection. It sold for $4.6 million, making it the most expensive movie costume, or prop of any kind, in history.
#2 AUDREY HEPBURN’S ASCOT DRESS (MY FAIR LADY) – $4.5 MILLION
Audrey Hepburn’s Edwardian black and white lace dress was designed by Cecil Beaton, who snagged the Academy Awards for costume design and art direction for his efforts. My Fair Lady (1964) also won Best Picture, Best Actor (Rex Harrison), Best Directing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Score.
The costume was worn during the musical number “Ascot Gavotte,” which features Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Hepburn) out in high society for the first time, where she pokes fun at the activities (or lack thereof) of the English upper class.
The dress (and matching hat) sold in 2011 for $4.5 million as part of a collection from late actress Debbie Reynolds, who collected over 3,500 costumes from films throughout Hollywood history — including Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, and Casablanca — in the hopes of one day creating a Hollywood museum.
#3 ASTON MARTIN DB5 (GOLDFINGER/THUNDERBALL) – $4.4 MILLION
One of two cars that were used in the making of Goldfinger (1964), James Bond’s 1965 Aston Martin DB5 convertible sold for $4.4 million in 2010. The car sold was known as the “Road Car”; during filming, it was used for regular driving, and was only outfitted with Bond’s signature gadgets after filming was complete. Interestingly, Goldfinger was the film where gadgets became a key part of the Bond franchise.
The Road Car went on to star in Thunderball (1965) the following year. It was then sold in 1969 to radio executive Jerry Lee for $12,000. It was mainly kept in storage until its most recent sale in London, where it was bought by Ohio collector Harry Yeaggy.
The other Aston Martin, known as the “Effects Car,” was given add-ons such as rotating plates and guns that appeared through the tail lights. It was stolen in 1997 from an airport hangar in Boca Raton, and has yet to be recovered.
#4 MALTESE FALCON STATUETTE (THE MALTESE FALCON) – $4.1 MILLION
The Maltese Falcon (1941), one of the true classics of film noir, was the directorial debut of John Huston, also known for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The African Queen, and stars Humphrey Bogart as world-weary private detective Sam Spade in search of the titular statuette. The statuette sold in 2013 for $4.1 million to Las Vegas hotel and casino billionaire Steve Wynne.
Some have contended as to whether the statuette is the real prop used in the film, as the actors purportedly used plaster stand-ins as opposed to the 45 lb. lead statuette. However, the prop in question has been confirmed as having appeared in the film; its bent tail feather, which can be seen at the end when Spade carries it out of his apartment, occurred during filming when actress Lee Patrick dropped it while handing it to Bogart.
#5 COWARDLY LION COSTUME (THE WIZARD OF OZ) – $3 MILLION
Actor Bert Lahr’s most recognizable role was his turn as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Though he may not have had the most memorable songs in the musical – “If I Were King of the Forest” somehow isn’t quite as catchy as “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” – he certainly had the most memorable get-up. The Cowardly Lion costume, made from real lion fur, sold in 2014 for $3 million after being found abandoned in an old MGM building. The costume was bought by James Comisar for his Museum of TV in Phoenix, Arizona, where it is still on display.
Lahr was chosen for the role for his comedic skills; his ad-libbed lines made his co-stars, especially Judy Garland, laugh during filming, causing director Victor Fleming to call for take after take. When the film was a success, Lahr was warned about the possibility that he’d be typecast. “Well, yeah,” he reportedly said, “but how many parts are there for lions?”
#6 DO-RE-MI OUTFITS (THE SOUND OF MUSIC) – $1.5 MILLION
It’s probably the first image that comes to mind when you think of The Sound of Music (well, right after Julie Andrews spinning around in a field belting out “The Hills Are Alive”). The outfits Maria makes from old curtains for the seven Von Trapp children are recognized all over the world, as well as the song they sing during a montage of day trips in Salzburg while wearing them. “Do, a deer, a female deer…” There, now it will never leave your head, either.
The Sound of Music came out in 1965, another smash hit for Julie Andrews after her starring role in Mary Poppins the year before. The Sound of Music went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Gone with the Wind (ironically, another film well-known for its curtain costume), and it held that title for five years.
The costumes are, indeed, made from real curtain material; the designer, Dorothy Jeakins, won an Oscar nomination for her work on the film. Despite being made of essentially canvas, the Do-Re-Mi outfits sold for $1.5 million in 2013.
#7 STEVE MCQUEEN’S RACING SUIT (LE MANS) – $984,000
Le Mans (1971) features a fictional account of the annual 24-hour auto race in Le Mans, France. Starring Steve McQueen, it was initially a box office flop, but over the years it garnered praise for its authenticity by using the actual Le Mans circuit, footage of the race captured by a participating car, and well-known drivers and actual Le Mans race cars. It has consequently gained a cult following, to the point where fans are willing to go to extraordinary measures to own a piece of its memorabilia.
McQueen’s racing suit was originally donated after the film’s release to the British newspaper The Observer as a prize for a Le Mans-themed trivia contest, which was won by twelve-year-old Thomas Davies. Davies sold the suit in 2011 for $155,000; three and a half months later, it was sold again, this time at the Icons of Hollywood auction in Beverly Hills, for $984,000, making it the most expensive piece of racing memorabilia ever sold.
#8 LOTUS SUBMARINE CAR (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME) – $860,000
James Bond is synonymous with glamorous cars, and the Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) is no exception. The vehicle is a submarine specially built for the film with the bodyshell of a Lotus Esprit. Six Esprits in total were used during filming, modified for the water, with fins where the wheels would be. The vehicle was dubbed “Wet Nellie,” after the autogyro called “Little Nellie” in You Only Live Twice (1967).
After filming was completed, Wet Nellie was placed in storage in Long Island, New York. After ten years, its storage unit was auctioned off for less than one hundred dollars, the buyer initially unaware of the unit’s contents. From 1989 to 2013, he occasionally exhibited the vehicle, restoring its exterior. It was eventually sold at auction in London in 2013 to business magnate Elon Musk, who has plans to use Tesla Motors’ electric drive train to make the car-submarine functional.
#9 AUDREY HEPBURN’S DRESS (BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S) – $806,000
It’s one of the most famous opening scenes in Hollywood history: Holly Golightly — played by Audrey Hepburn in her most iconic role — emerges from a yellow taxi on 5th Avenue. She nibbles a pastry while looking in the Tiffany’s shop window, wearing “the most famous little black dress of all time.”
The dress was created by Hubert de Givenchy, a French designer (with clients such as Jackie Kennedy) and a close friend of Audrey Hepburn’s, for whom he designed nearly all of her personal and professional wardrobe. For Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), Givenchy not only designed the black Italian satin sheath gown, but chose the accessories to accompany it: Holly’s pearls, cigarette holder, black hat, and black opera gloves.
One copy of the dress sold in 2006 for $806,000, a huge price tag that surprised many. Two other copies of the dress remain – one in Givenchy’s archive, the other in a costume museum in Madrid.
#10 FLYING CAR (CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG) – $805,000
While Mary Poppins (1964) is more well known in the public eye, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) is another British musical that can conjure up childhood nostalgia, especially for those enchanted by its eponymous flying car. The film stars Dick Van Dyke as the inventor Caractacus Potts, and chronicles his adventures with his two children and Truly Scrumptious as they seek to sell his inventions and evade Baron Bomburst and his evil (and frankly, pretty terrifying) Child Catcher.
Six cars in total were created for the film, including an engineless version for the trailers, a car for the flying scenes, a car for the transformations, and a smaller version for driving scenes. After filming was completed, all six were fitted with engines and used to promote the film around the world. One car was a fully functioning road-ready car with genuine UK registration; this was the car that sold in 2011 for $805,000 to famed director Peter Jackson, who now uses it as a fundraising vehicle.
#11 DOROTHY’S RUBY SLIPPERS (THE WIZARD OF OZ) – $666,000
1939 gave us a slew of Hollywood classics: Gone with the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and The Wizard of Oz. Victor Fleming’s latter masterpiece also gave us one of the most famous props in movie history: Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Worn by Judy Garland, only four of the original pairs survive, with one pair permanently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
The original book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, actually had Dorothy wearing silver shoes. The producers of the film decided to change the color to red, as it would show up better against the yellow brick road. In a film with a dazzling (and now iconic) change from black and white to color, every advantage of Technicolor had to be taken.
One pair of the ruby slippers was sold in 2000 for $666,000. In 2005, the pair at The Judy Garland Museum was stolen. Ten years later, in 2015, a reward for one million dollars was issued for anyone with information on the stolen slippers’ whereabouts.
#12 DELOREAN CAR (BACK TO THE FUTURE) – $541,000
The 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 has become synonymous with time travel. The only car DeLorean ever manufactured, it burst onto the pop culture scene with the 1985 release of Back to the Future. Equipped with a flux capacitor built by inventor Doc Brown, in the film, it travels through time when it hits 88 miles per hour.
There were originally seven cars in total used in the making of the Back to the Future trilogy, and only three remain in existence. The one sold at auction in 2011 was mainly used in the third movie, with part of the proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Soon, though, the DeLorean will be available for purchase for any die-hard Back to the Future fans with the means, as the car will be going back into production in early 2017. DeLorean — who’s only stayed in business by refurbishing old DMC-12s — are planning to make three hundred replicas of the original. The replicas will reportedly cost about $100,000 each; now we just need to invent the flux capacitor!
