Hey to all doll makers and customizers (and fiber artists too lol) - our two old alpacas just got sheared for the summer, so I have a bunch of brown fiber and a bunch of white fiber. Unprocessed/raw, with a shorter staple length than most suri (2-4 inches, theyre suri x huacaya crosses so have the silky straight fiber but not as long). I'll let you have as much as you want for the cost of shipping! Just trying to save attic space.
Here are two wigs I've made with them to give you an idea of color.

what is the problem with using alpaca wool?
Well from a vegan perspective, breeding and farming an animal in order to make a profit from them is exploitative at it's foundation. If you're a vegan that alone will be enough for you.
Before I expand on that for everyone who doesn't mind a bit of exploitation for profit, I do just want to note that almost everyone who talks about alpaca wool pretends that the only people farming it are indigenous people using indigenous practices. This is disingenuous at best, and isn't where practically any alpaca wool you'll find in any market is from, unless you're buying directly from indigenous people. It's people cloaking their clothing preferences in the pretence that they're supporting indigenous people, as leftists so frequently love to do.
This is relevant because it feeds into the second issue with alpaca wool, which is sustainability. If you search anything about alpaca wool sustainability you'll be bombarded with blogs selling how environmentally friendly it is, but again, that almost always is measured on the basis of small, independent indigenous farmers - which again is not where the alpaca wool most people are buying is coming from.
Alpaca wool is no more sustainable than sheep farming is, they're large ruminants who require large tracts of land to graze on, who produce methane, who graze down saplings so that they can't regrow and the eventual product of their exploitation is generally heavy processed with toxic chemicals. The only reason the alpaca wool industry isn't as high impact as the sheep's wool industry is because the scale is smaller, if it were done at scale we'd see a similarly devastating ecological impact.

Found my carefully stored away box of alpaca. 500m of each colour, and no idea how it's going to work with my new loom.
Fun!

Sustainability Natural Textile Fibers and Magick- Alpaca Wool- Nisha Designs
Alpaca fiber is classified as a luxury fiber. It is much more resistant, warmer and softer than sheep’s wool, does not contain lanolin and is available in over 20 natural colors. It is comparable to a high-end cashmere to the touch and is appreciated for its thermal properties, its lightness and its silky touch. It is no coincidence that the fabrics made with this precious natural fiber were once…

As someone who knows how to go outside and go online, could you be the go-between for them? Would that be too much on you or a possible income stream to set up an online advertisement system for them?
Tired of reading about terrible impact of fast fashion on the planet so instead of doing the winter clothes shopping bullshit where I get a shitty sweatshirt that will be too ratty to wear comfortably in 3 years, i'm going to ask every person I know who knows people where i can find someone who makes sweaters out of local wool or Alpaca. I will commission them if I have to

Yarn for Christmas?
An open PSA to anyone with crafting friends (and isn't really sure what they like):
DON'T BUY THEM YARN
Part of the hobby is the purchasing yarn, which some might argue buying yarn and using yarn are two different hobbies. "But OP," you might argue, "I just know they'll love the Red Heart Super Saver I got on sale at Joann's! One skein should be plenty, and they can make me a sweater!"
This is one of those rare cases where a gift card to their favorite yarn store is more personal. First off, nothing against Red Heart, but if they're a yarn snob, it's going to collect dust. If they're a project-oriented purchaser, it's going to collect dust. If they like to buy yarn, then it's just mean.
Also, NEVER imply that your crafting friend should make something for you. If they love you, they will. If they don't, then you're not close enough to be making expensive demands.
