The British Home Child Trunk -- Barnardos
Photo from the Middleville Museum– Between 1869 and 1939, over 100,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada through assisted juvenile emigration. These migrants are called “home children” because most went from an emigration agency’s home for children in Britain to its Canadian receiving home. The children were mostly placed with families in rural Canada. British Home Child Trunks A Two by…

How Shota Imanaga wound up all over Chicago before the Cubs landed the free agent
[original article]
Shota Imanaga listened to the roar of the crowd during the national anthem, taking in the scene before one of Connor Bedard’s first home games with the Chicago Blackhawks. Imanaga later returned to the United Center to buy a Michael Jordan jersey and take a picture next to the iconic statue.
This was early November, a few weeks before Imanaga entered the posting system created by Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball. Imanaga, a fixture with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and the winning pitcher in Japan’s victory over Team USA in last year’s World Baseball Classic championship game, wanted a new challenge.
With a 45-day negotiating window beginning to close, Imanaga returned to Illinois at Christmastime to make himself available for meetings and reassess his options as a free agent. Octagon, the agency that represents him, has an office on Michigan Avenue and a network throughout the Chicago area. The central location made sense for possible travel ahead of Thursday’s deadline to sign a contract with a major-league club.
Imanaga and his associates posted up at a suburban hotel, getting comfort food at Mitsuwa Marketplace, a Japanese grocery store in Arlington Heights. Imanaga worked out at Bo Jackson’s indoor facility near O’Hare International Airport. Imanaga’s group now has a collection of tourist photos around Chicago that could best be described as “Where’s Shota?”
Imanaga felt so comfortable that he wanted to stay. He just wasn’t sure that the interest was mutual.
“Each team is different and it’s a long process,” Imanaga told The Athletic on Thursday through an interpreter. “One time I mentioned, ‘I hope the Cubs offer me.’ I was kind of joking just because at that time the Cubs were out of the picture.”
Cubs executives Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins are patient, logical and calculating. All throughout December and into the middle of January, the Cubs did not sign a free agent to a major-league contract or make a trade to improve an 83-win roster that subtracted Cody Bellinger and Marcus Stroman. Hoyer personally scouted Imanaga during a trip to Japan in September and remained in contact with his representatives, though the Cubs did not jump out as a frontrunner until the late stages of the negotiations.
The rest of the offseason will be shaped by that ability to pounce. The Cubs have the financial resources and the prospects to make a deal at any moment. That reality became harder to grasp during the two months of inactivity between Hoyer hiring Craig Counsell as the sport’s highest-paid manager and Imanaga signing a four-year, $53 million contract with options to take the deal to five years and $80 million. But the Cubs are very good at recruiting when they concentrate on certain free agents, making personalized pitches that previously resonated with Japanese players such as Yu Darvish and Seiya Suzuki.
The Cubs demonstrated some more creativity in Thursday’s trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving up two prospects who are talented but far way (Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope) for a reliever who will immediately slot into Counsell’s bullpen (Yency Almonte) and a left-handed hitter who crushed Triple-A pitching (Michael Busch) but was blocked by all the stars at Dodger Stadium.
Suddenly, the talk at this weekend’s Cubs Convention will shift toward the action and away from the moves that aren’t being made. Imanaga will be introduced Friday afternoon at the Loews Chicago Hotel. When Imanaga went to a Schaumburg shopping center on Wednesday — to buy a new tie in the right shade of Cubbie blue for the press conference — the clerk recognized him and double-checked by looking at the name on the credit card. The anonymity is already fading.
“The Cubs stepped in,” Imanaga said. “Their intensity level made me feel like they really wanted me.”

Choose Amon's Adventure
The results from the previous poll were:
(Note - I didn't realize I'd made one of the options so close to Amon's name until it won. I was just rolling a random Elezen name generator. Too funny!)
“My name is Almont,” the lad finally told him.
Amon gave a slight laugh at the similarity to his own name. Just cut a few letters and…
“What’s so funny?”
“My name is Amon,” the bard told him.
It took the lad a moment to work out why this was amusing. When he finally did, he said, “You’re kidding.”
“I’m not.”
Clod Almont finally laughed a little too. This seemed to break the ice, and as the lad drank more of the tea, he warmed up to company and conversation.
In fact, once he answered with more than “none of your business,” the lad wasn’t half bad to chat with. Amon explained how he’d dragged the lad out of the mud and into the inn – leaving out the bit about trying to pin it on the lad’s tab – which left Clod Almont shaking his head.
“Why would you do that? You don’t even know me.”
The bard shrugged. He didn’t exactly know why he did what he did most of the time, either.
“You paid for this room?”
“’Twas on discount,” Amon reminded him.
“Still,” the lad was slowly coming to the conclusions the bard hoped for. “I shall have to repay you somehow.”
“Well,” Amon cracked a smile. “You can start by telling me why you’re wandering around drunk in Gridania.”
Clod Almont grunted at that. “It’s a stupid story.”
“I’m a bard. I live for stories of all kinds.”
“Fine,” the lad gave his signature sour look. “It’s my dream to race and breed chocobos. So, I left home with my savings to find a bird to start my racing lineage.”
Well, that wasn’t what Amon expected. It was interesting none the less.
“But..?” the bard prodded.
Clod Almont looked ashamed. “On my way to Bentbranch, I got swindled out of my savings.”
“Swindled?”
“Long story.”
“I see. So, you can’t buy your bird,” Amon summarized.
“Yeah. And I can’t go home empty handed, either. My parents did not approve of me chasing my dreams.”
The bard didn’t inquire as to why chocobo racing was an Ishgardian noble’s dream – dreams were often funny like that. He certainly could see the logic of his parent’s disapproval at the lad’s flight of fancy.
Despite all this, it could be an interesting opportunity should Amon choose to get involved.

"darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.
Name: Jackson "Monty" Ortega Birthdate: June 12, 1981 Sexuality: Homosexual Occupation: Bartender and cook at Aurora Birth Place: Boston, MA Residence: Cardinal Hill Height: 5'9"
[ background ]
TW: Religion, discrimination
Born to immigrant parents who settled in Boston, MA. Jackson Almonte was the first and only son to parents Cecilia and Miguel Almonte following his four older sisters. His parents although born and raised in Mexico felt like they could provide their children a better life here in the Americas. Being the youngest of his home, Monty - as he prefered to be called - was always doted on and his accomplishments no matter how small were always praised.
Growing up his family were well involved in church, going to catholic services regularly. At first due to them being so new to the states and at church they made friends, but their family had always been deeply religious and followed the bible's teachings as well as they could. Monty himself had grown to deeply love his religion and became an altar boy.
It wasn't until his teenage years where Monty became interested in 'talking to people 'dating' and exploring a life outside of the church where he began to learn more and more about himself. He's never been interested in girls his age no matter how much time he spent around them. He did however stare a little too long at the boys around his age. Finding things about them that peaked his curiosity and made him feel attraction.
The first boy he ever liked was another altar boy in his church and while the two felt the same the other boy's family outed them out to the rest of the church. It didn't take long for criticism to make their way around the parish, leading his parents to abandon that church in order to keep him safe and to quell the prejudice remarks and dirty looks sent his way.
While everyone in the church began spewing words and condamnments his way, his parents supported and encouraged Monty to be the best individual that he could be. No matter what others say about him, or the words thrown his way. They showed him what a devoted and loving family unit they were and because of them Monty never had to hide behind a facade.
After this incident Monty couldn’t really care much for people outside his family. Their view on him or his doings meant nothing to him and he much better preferred to stick to himself. He did get in lots of fights with others, most of which he picked himself.
By the year he graduated high school, Monty had set up a secret fight club - switching scene every week in order to stay under the radar. There was something satisfying about beating someone’s face in with no ill will behind his actions. It was all purely for release.
For college, Monty, wanting to explore new places, applied to college in Chicago and his family followed him there. They were an ever present shield of love at his side, and when he met his future husband they welcomed him with open arms too.
Finding love wasn't something that Monty ever really thought about. He wasn't used to giving himself away in such a way, but after meeting Nolan everything changed. It was unlike anything else he had ever experienced, and while at first he pretended to be annoyed by his very being, it took a little less than three encounters for Monty to not be able to get him out his head. He looked forwards to coming into work just so he could gawk, and occasionally meet the other's eyes.
It wasn't long before the two started seeing each other, which prompted a new challenge for their work place. Maintaining a proper relationship and working together seemed impossible back then, and while they were able to keep business as a priority neither wanted to compromise their livelihood leading to Monty founding a new place to work.
As they grew older, the two discussed marriage and their future together. While it was comfortable to remain where they were, Monty aided in Nolan's dreams of owning his own business and the two soon opened a bar. There they work to this day.
The pair soon after 'married' on their own accords until it became legal for them to be legally wed, and now they have everything they could ever truly dream of. A loving marriage, two beautiful and lively twins, and Aurora who has become an extension of themselves.

"SIX YEARS FOR BURGLAR," Ottawa Journal. June 30, 1913. Page 1. ----- Girouard, Renfrew Burglar, Goes to Kingston-Boy Gets Six Months. ---- Renfrew, June 30. - (Special). - Joseph Cleroux, junior, a boy of about fifteen years of age; Mrs. Cleroux, mother of the boy; and Girouard, one of the men arrested at their home in Almonte on Thursday for attempting to burglarize the store of N. Dean and Bon, were brought before Police Magistrate Devine Saturday afternoon. The elder man was sentenced to six years in Kingston penitentiary, while the younger was given six months in Pembroke jail. Mrs. Cleroux, mother of the boy, and wife of Jos. Cleroux, senior, who was also under arrest but who escaped from the jail here, was let off on suspended sentence, but with the warning that she would be herself dealt with if found harboring or assisting her husband in any way.
[The reporting here appears to be inaccurate in the extreme. Girouard was not sentenced to a penitentiary term, and it was the younger Cleroux who got 2 years, not 6, in the penitentiary at the age of 17. He had already spent 2 years in the Mimico Industrial School. He was born in Ogdensburg, NY, but raised in Renfrew and was a naturalized Canadian subject. He was convict #F-617 and worked in the tailor shop. He was reported in July 1913, and then a number of times in January, February, March, July and August 1914, with 20 days remission lost and two long stints in solitary confinement - all for impertinence to officers, smoking, refusing to work, etc. He was released in March 1915.]

Choose Amon's Adventure
The results from the previous poll were:
They decided to have just a small celebration, the three of them (including Typhoon) there in the stables. Amon picked up some food and choco-treats and they sat around in the clean hay, toasting to their winning and lavishing Typhoon with attention. She was fast becoming attached to Almont – which was a good thing.
“I’ve spent some time looking for lodging,” the lad spoke sometime during their supper. “Somewhere withing proximity to the stables. I thought about what you said, and you’re right. I need to learn to race for myself.”
“I think ‘tis a wise move for now,” Amon nodded in approval.
“What about you?” Almont inquired. “You have your part of the purse. I know that doesn’t make up for all you’ve put into this endeavor but… I also know you have other things to do.”
The bard looked thoughtful for a moment…

Thompson’s WO Walk Helps Dodgers Win Wild One.
Twins 8 Dodgers 9 W-Bickford (1-1) L-Lopez (1-1)
The Dodgers have found their stride after a month of .500 baseball. The team has been reeling off wins at a massive rate and another good game enused as the Twins came to town tonight. Freddie Freeman ignited a first inning rally with a single to right. Will Smith followed and belted a Pablo Lopez fastball out to right-center for a two-run homer. Max Muncy took Lopez deep and the Dodgers had a three-run lead after an inning of play. The Twins got a run back in the second as Jorge Polanco reached on an infield single. Kyle Farmer singled him home and the Twins were within a pair. The Dodgers got that run back and more in the third with a Will Smith one-out single. Max Muncy drilled a Pablo Lopez change-up out to left for a two-run shot and Los Angeles had a 5-1 lead. Jorge Polanco inched the Twins closer with a solo homer off Noah Syndergaard in the fourth. The bats calmed down in the middle innings until Christian Vazquez lined a single to right in the seventh. Donovan Solano walked and Alex Kirilloff singled home a run. The Dodgers got that run back with a Freddie Freeman run-scoring single. The Dodgers took a three-run lead in the eighth inning and it did not hold up. Byron Buxton led-off with a single and Jorge Polanco doubled. Trevor Larnach belted a Yency Almonte fastball out to right for a three-run homer that tied the game at six. Miguel Vargas answered with a two-out double in the eighth. David Peralta doubled him home to put the Dodgers up 7-6. The Twins continued to be pests as Carlos Correa walked with one-out in the ninth. Byron Buxton doubled him home to even the game at seven. Jhoan Duran had a 1-2-3 ninth and we needed extra innings tonight. The Twins quickly loaded the bases against Phil Bickford in the tenth. Christian Vazquez drew a bases loaded walk and Bickford found his form by retiring three straight men. JD Martinez countered with an RBI single in the tenth and we needed another inning. Neither side scored in the eleventh and Phil Bickford continued to put up zeroes. The Dodgers loaded up the bases with two outs in the twelfth. Trayce Thompson drew a walk to walk-off the Twins tonight in Los Angeles.
-Final Thoughts- Pablo Lopez wasn’t very sharp tonight. He lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Brock Stewart got four outs, Emilio Pagan gave up a run in the seventh, and Griffin Jax allowed another run in the eighth. Jhoan Duran threw two solid innings and gave up the ghost run. Jorge Lopez was pretty good, but took the loss with the bases loaded walk. Jorge Polanco and Christian Vazquez led the team with three hits on the night. Byron Buxton added two hits tonight. The Twins hit 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left fifteen men on base. Tomorrow, Bailey Ober faces Clayton Kershaw in Game 2.
