Over all in my life I have bought and sold 7 properties personally and been involved…

WILLIAM HENRY
Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh
(born 1743 - died 1805)

pictured above is a portrait of the Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, by Francis Cotes from 1769
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
SERIES - On this day August Edition: William Henry died on 25 August 1805.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
WILLIAM HENRY was born in 1743 at Leicester House, in London. He was the third son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gota.
Being a paternal grandson George II, King of Great Britain he was a member of the British branch of the HOUSE OF HANOVER and a PRINCE OF GREAT BRITAIN from birth. Though he was known by his father's title as PRINCE WILLIAM OF WALES.
When he was eight years old his father died leaving his older brother Prince George as the first-in-line to the British throne.
In 1760 his brother succeeded their grandfather as George III, King of Great Britain. And in 1764 his brother created him as DUKE OF GLOUCESTER AND EDINBURGH and EARL OF CONNAUGHT.
By 1766 he married in secret to MARIA, one of the illegitimate daughters of Edward Walpole and his mistress Dorothy Clement, and they had three children (check the list below). She was the widow of James Waldegrave, 2nd Earl Waldegrave and already had three daughters.
As his wedding occurred before the passing of the Royal Marriage Acts of 1772, there was no need for the King's approval and all of his children were legitimate and were in the line of succession to the British throne.
He served in the Army and wished for a field command in the American Revolutionary War of Independence, but his brother King George III would not give him any roles. Later he wished to fight in the Prussian Army at the War of the Bavarian Succession but Friedrich II (the Great), King of Prussia also did not accept his offer.
It is believed that he had an illegitimate daughter born in 1782 by Lady Almeria Carpenter, daughter of George Carpenter, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell and Frances Clifton.
Later in his life the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland were unified, around 1800/01, creating the Kingdom of the United Kingdom. So his brother became the first Monarch as George III, King of the United Kingdom and he became a PRINCE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM.
The Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh died aged 61, on 25 August 1805, at Gloucester House, his London residence.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
WILLIAM HENRY and his wife MARIA had three children...
Princess Sophia of Gloucester - unmarried;
Princess Caroline of Gloucester - died aged eight months;
William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh - husband of Princess Mary of the United Kingdom.
And he may have had illegitimate children...
With an unknown woman...
Louisa Maria La Coast - wife of Godfrey Macdonald, 3rd Baron Macdonald.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
His only son Prince William Frederick succeeded on his titles and later in life married to one of the daughters of King George III.
Considering that neither of his two surviving legitimate children had offspring of their own he has no legitimante living descendants.
Though, through his possible illegitimate daughter, he may be an ancestor of Godfrey Madconald, the 8th and current Baron Macdonald.
