I broke my digital detox because I couldn’t look away from the devastation sweeping across the country. Wildfires in California, hurricanes in Florida, and tornadoes in the Midwest aren’t just distant disasters anymore — they’re hitting friends, family, and colleagues I care deeply about.

My thoughts are with the victims, especially those in Southern California. Prayers matter, but action is what rebuilds lives. > Wildfires, Hurricanes, and Rising Costs:

In January 2025, wildfires in Pacific Palisades, California, burned over 20,000 acres, destroying over 1,500 homes. Winds over 100 mph fueled the destruction, leaving entire neighborhoods in ash. Lives were lost, thousands displaced. California has seen 13 of its 20 largest wildfires in just five years. NOAA data shows a 172% increase in burned areas since the 1970s, driven by human activity. The risks are rising, and the destruction is predicted to grow worse.

Meanwhile, hurricanes continue to pound the Southeast. Hurricane Helene (2024) caused $120 billion in damages across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Record-breaking storm surges and catastrophic flooding left communities in ruins. Living part-time in Fort Myers, Florida, I’ve witnessed the destruction of Charley (2004), Ian (2022), and Helene. These storms are more frequent, intense, and harder to recover from, stretching insurance systems past their breaking point.

The Chain Reaction

The fallout from these disasters is clear. In California, insurers like State Farm and Allstate have stopped issuing new homeowner policies due to wildfire risks. In Florida, premiums have doubled in five years, with some rising over 400%. Without insurance, banks won’t lend. Without loans, most families can’t buy homes.

This isn’t just a policy problem—it’s a crisis for communities. When homeowners are forced out, property values drop, schools lose funding, and local economies suffer. The middle class is locked out, leaving only the wealthy to own homes. This isn’t just about costs—it’s about who gets to live, thrive, and build a future in America.

Misplaced Blame and Information Pollution

There is too much noise—misinformation, disinformation, and partisan blame games muddy the waters. Bad-faith actors turn real emergencies into political talking points, confusing and dividing people. Some of this stems from poor communication by officials, but much of it is deliberate manipulation.

Yes, some disasters are acts of nature, but blaming “diversity hiring” in firefighting or pointing fingers at governments oversimplifies the problem. These crises are systemic. Fires grow larger because of rising temperatures, not who’s fighting them. Hurricanes intensify due to warming oceans, not political affiliations. Solutions require clarity, not scapegoats.

Thankfully, some are cutting through the chaos. Local outlets like the LA Times and LA’s TV stations work tirelessly to provide accurate, life-saving information. Their efforts shine in the darkness of confusion.

The Cost of Doing Nothing

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Families unable to rebuild face financial ruin. Communities lose tax revenue, forcing cuts to essential services like schools and public safety. Housing markets weaken, dampening consumer spending and threatening financial systems.

We’ve seen this kind of collapse before. The 2008 financial crisis shook the global economy, rooted in speculation and unstable systems. Now, the threat comes from physical destruction, not market speculation. Without action, we face a future where most homeownership is out of reach and entire communities are hollowed out.

What Needs to Be Done

This crisis isn’t unsolvable, but it demands bold action now:

1. Address Climate Change: Shift to renewable energy, reduce emissions, and invest in resilient infrastructure, such as firebreaks, flood defenses, and storm-resistant housing.

2. Stabilize Insurance Markets: Create public-private partnerships to spread risk and keep premiums affordable. Modernize programs like the National Flood Insurance Program and expand similar support for wildfire-prone areas.

3. Support Vulnerable Communities: Help families with rising premiums or falling property values by incentivizing retrofitting homes with fire-resistant materials or raising them in flood-prone areas.

4. Use Data and Predictive Models: Leverage advanced tools to identify risks, forecast crises, and act early to mitigate damage.

The Leadership We Need

I’ve spent my life studying complex systems—their strength and fragility and how internal and external pressures shape them. I look at this crisis and our democracy through the same lens. Systems can endure incredible strain but collapse when left unattended. That’s what we’re seeing now—a system under immense pressure, fraying at the edges.

We can’t rely on the market to fix this. Insurers are leaving because the risks are too high. Markets don’t self-correct when foundations collapse. Without intervention, homeownership will belong only to those who can pay cash. Communities will shrink, economies will suffer, and the American Dream will disappear.

The question isn’t whether we can afford to act — it’s whether we can afford not to. The path forward is clear. The only thing left is the will to walk it.
