Song Review: Steve Earle - âI Fought the Lawâ
Steve Earle found himself a band for his new cover of âI Fought the Law.â
The single announces Better than Jail, a various-artists comp benefiting Equal Justice USA and Free Hearts.
Playing solo since the demise of the Dukes, Earle, whose voice sounds smoother than usual, puts a country-rock spin on the ubiquitous tune while leaving in place elements of both the Bobby Fuller Four and the Clashâs versions.
Out Oct. 4, Better than Jail will also feature covers from the War and Treaty, Lukas Nelson, Hayes Carll and Allison Moorer, Bonnie Raitt, Margo Price, Old Crow Medicine Show, Taj Mahal and others.

While we're on the "Shakespeare sounds awesome in a Southern accent" train, can we also do Irish folk music?
(This is from a show called the Transatlantic Sessions that invited Scottish, Irish, and American musicians including Allison Moorer to trade folk songs and sing together)

it's about cycles. It's about love, it's about loss, it's about endless leavetakings and homecomings. It's about addiction and abuse. It's about manic/depressive swings and seasonal affective disorder and also the joy of leaves changing color and crocuses blooming in the frost. It's about Her. REVIEW: Shelby Lynne âConsequences of the Crownâ
REVIEW: Shelby Lynne âConsequences of the Crownâ @ogshelbylynne#consequencesofthecrown @americanahighways #johnapice #americanahighways #americanamusic #shelbylynne #newmusic2024 #Musicreviews #writtenbyahuman
Shelby Lynne â Consequences of the Crown I always enjoyed the music of Shelby Lynne in an era when I was getting acquainted with music by singers like Allison Moorer (Shelbyâs sister), Shawn Colvin, Kim Richey & Billie Meyers among several other fine singer-songwriters. The songs here surprisingly begin with an ethereal confluence with some haunting projections with the narrative & ghostlyâŠ

Album Review: Walter Hyatt - Must I Fall
Walter Hyatt is in Frank Sinatra mode on Must I Fall, a new album of previously unreleased material that comes 27 years after the Uncle Waltâs Band leader was killed in a plane crash and as he and his group are finally getting some of the recognition that eluded them in Hyattâs lifetime.
After all, any composer who comes up with such lines as, My discontent burns brighter than the sun at noon (âDark Side of the Moonâ) merits music loversâ attention.
The album swings best when Hyatt lends his smooth tenor to the jazz numbers that are the title track, âOld Number Oneâ and âRain Likely.â
Itâs so hard to love and be wise, Hyatt sings on the latter, displaying the songwriting chops that made fans of Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin and Allison Moorer, as his band lays down a background of brushed drums, double bass, acoustic piano, electric guitar and clarinet.
He does it again on âLife in the City,â a lovely ballad that paints a vivid picture of a date going off the rails in a European city - Venice, perhaps - with the sound of a street accordionist as Hyatt croons:
Sheâs already been through all he has to offer enough times before/so she winds up calling a taxi and walking herself to the door
Though he was mostly a bluegrass and country guy, Hyatt knew a strong melody when he heard it and nicked a bit of Todd Rundgrenâs âIt Wouldnât Have Made Any Differenceâ for âSnowing Me Under.â It stands as a teaser for where Hyatt might have taken his music if heâd had the chance.
Which is the case for all of Must I Fallâs eight cuts. A bit disjointed, itâs as strong as an album of such vintage cutting and pasting can be and - most importantly - should serve as a springboard back to Hyatt and UWBâs modest but under-recognized back catalog.
Grade card: Walter Hyatt - Must I Fall - B-

Grazie Alessia e Becca @lonelysmile e @sleepingdea ! đđ
rules: tag people you want to get to know better
last song: A soft place to fall by Allison Moorer
last show:The Lidia PoĂ«t one on Netflix (I have basically watched 90% of all Italian stuff on Netflix đ
)
currently watching: Nothing. I need some recommendations! Gimme some people/friends! đ
currently reading: just started The song of Achilles.
current obsession: the standard ones (my two football teams aging me way faster than Iâd prefer for instance). But right now cycliiiiiiiing is back. Itâs time for the classics and I AM EXCITEEEED. And my career as I need to find a new job but not exactly sure what I want to do. And I miss Greece and Iâm back on wanting to write something small trying to summarize the 20th century history of Greece in English cause there is nothing available that is easy to understand (I looooved the books I found but they are more academic books and not really easy to read).
i'm tagging: trying not to re-tag people already tagged by Alessia or Becca (which means almost nobody left in my small circle đ
) so Iâll leave it up to any of my mutuals seeing that post and wanting to do it: I AM TAGGING YOU *Uncle Sam style*
