WAYLAND, Mich. (AP) — A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a motorist during a “physical altercation” after the deputy pulled a car over in western Michigan’s Allegan County, state police said.

The deputy was conducting a traffic stop about 10 p.m. Thursday when the altercation occurred between the officer and the motorist in Salem Township, northwest of Wayland. The deputy fired his weapon at least once, killing the driver, Michigan State Police said.

Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker told WOOD-TV the driver was the only person inside the vehicle.

After the shooting, the deputy was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, but Baker said the deputy’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The motorist’s name and details of the nature of the traffic stop and the shooting have not been released by state police, which is investigating the incident.

“This investigation is in its infancy stage, which means we do not have a lot of information to share right now,” state police tweeted, adding that troopers were still interviewing witnesses, gathering facts and collecting evidence.

The deputy involved in the deadly shooting is on administrative leave, a routine procedure following police-involved shootings, while state police investigate and the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office conducts an interview review.

also, I’m laughing at her attempt to prove that the restraining order papers she was served were fraudulent. my city is split between county Ottawa county and Allegan county with her plague pizzeria on the side that’s in Allegan county, she contacted a sheriff’s office to confirm it was legit and got told no one from that sheriff’s office served her so she’s presenting that to her rat-licker fans as proof that someone pretended to be a cop to intimidate her.

except she contacted the sheriff’s office for a county halfway across the state and got told they didn’t serve her since they only serve papers to people in their own county. of course someone from the sheriff’s office in the county that includes Lansing isn’t going to be sending someone all the way over to a city that’s right next to Lake Michigan to serve papers, that’s going to be done locally.

Scott Matice, captain of the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan, said deputies won’t immediately respond to nonemergency calls and will cut back on patrols to save on gas.

“We instructed our officers to not idle their vehicles and to do stationary traffic control rather than patrol and drive all over the place just trying to find violations,” he said.

Matice said that calls where evidence doesn’t need to be collected will be taken by phone and that further gas increases could force the department to limit mileage on vehicles.

“We want officers to be smarter about their patrol but still visible,” Matice said.

In Indiana, the Honey Creek Fire Department will restrict building inspections, use smaller vehicles more frequently and won’t allow firefighters to drive to training courses to save on fuel costs, according to Chief Thomas High. He said his department has responded to 960 calls this year but projects it will get more than 2,000.

A Florida man was arrested Wednesday after shining a laser pointer at multiple pilots making their approaches at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, police said.

Charlie James Chapman Jr, 41, faces multiple charges after police said he temporarily blinded one of the pilots. Video claims to show him throwing rocks and directing the laser at a Manatee County Sheriff's helicopter attempting to locate him.***

"One of the pilots of the plane advised that the laser hit him directly in the eyes, causing temporary blindness. The pilot stated he was still felt his eye sight was blurry from the laser."

Around 8 p.m., Prince George’s County police said they received report of a man who had struck several vehicles starting in the Silver Hill, Maryland, area. They found the man on St. Barnabas Road, near Winston Street, in Temple Hills.

Police believed the man was under the influence and said they smelled what they believed to be PCP, spokeswoman Christina Cotterman said during a news conference broadcast by WUSA9.

An initial investigation found that police handcuffed the man with his arms behind him and put him in the front passenger seat of a cruiser with the seat belt on while they waited for a drug recognition expert to give them guidance. An officer then got into the driver seat of the cruiser.

Two independent witnesses told police that they either saw or heard a struggle coming from the cruiser, and they heard loud bangs. The man was struck multiple times with the officer’s duty weapon.****
