Volvo XC40: Full of surprises

It’s been more than a few years since I spent any time behind the wheel of a Volvo so in all honesty I didn’t know what to expect. To be more precise the last Volvo I drove was the svelte C30 Sportswagon, which paid homage to the classic P1800 Sports Wagon, both of which still remain as among my favorite Volvos. I’m glad to report that the fun factor has returned to Volvo. Let’s face it, Volvo has had its share of boring rides. Looks like all that may be history thanks to Volvo’s smallest sport utility, the stylish and sexy XC40.
The Swedish carmaker – now owned by Chinese conglomerate Geely- is the latest European to take on the lucrative suv/crossover market. Going up against established European icons like Mercedes’ GLA, Audi’s Q3, Porsche’s Macan, BMW’s X1 as well as the Range Rover Evoque is no easy task, yet this Swede is cleaning up the compact suv market.
Unlike the Q3, X1 and Macan, which appear to be shrunken versions of their big brothers, the XC40 not only easily distinguishes itself from its larger siblings, the XC 60 and XC90 but clearly sets itself apart from the slew of cookie cutter crossovers on today’s roads.
Three trim levels make up the XC40 line up with prices starting at $39,750 for the entry level Momentum and topping off at $48,200 for the Inscription (who comes up with these names). My well-equipped middle of the road R-Design starts off at $45,650.
For the added six grand tag over the base model the R-Design gets two zone climate control, a cooled glove box, power passenger seat, panoramic sun roof, paddle shifters, cornering lights, a sport-tuned chassis and 19” wheels.
All XC40s ride on a brand-new platform that uses a space-efficient, cost effective coil/four-link rear suspension. There’s a slew of powerplants available, including a diesel, sadly they’re not available here.
Supplying the go for the Canadian market to the all-wheel-drive is Volvo’s T5 turbocharged 2.0L inline four cylinder mated to an 8-speed automatic. With 248-horsepower and 258 lb.ft. of torque on tap the XC40 easily muscles its way through the competition, including some the sports car-oriented marques, scurrying the crossover from 0 to 100 kms in a mere 6.5 seconds. The ride is composed over all but the roughest terrain.
The automatic is smooth and easily responds to throttle inputs when going through the gears with the paddle shifters and makes tackling serpentine roads a joy.
Sadly, and the only reason I see behind it is an effort to be “different” but shifting into gear from Park is…well…a pain in the butt and even after a week in the driver’s seat was still cursing the “engineer” who thought of this one. When shifting out of Park you need to pull OR push the gear lever into neutral then tap it twice to the back for Drive and if you want to back up tap it twice forward. Ya, a pleasure for parallel parking. We’ve been shifting from Park to Reverse to Neutral to Drive for years. Why change something that isn’t broken?
The interior is spacious, very spacious, considering the XC40’s exterior dimensions but I was floored when I opened the doors to my R-Design. It came with the loud Lava Orange two-tone colour scheme. Yes there is a more docile interior that you don’t have to pay extra for.
Admittedly I kinda like the loudness, it certainly brightened up the cabin, although questioned the use of orange “ozite” carpet material on the door panels, and its wear ability. The rest of the interior’s fit and finish is second to none and the use of other materials isn’t as drastic and often complimentary. There are pockets and cubbyholes galore to keep all your peripherals in place whether they are large water bottles or wireless cell phone charging.
One small item that really impressed me was a slot on the center console with a flap. No need to open the armrest to slip in gas or toll receipts. Smart. There’s also a place to store the cargo blind/parcel shelf under the cargo bay’s floor.
The buckets are comfortable and supportive with just the right amount of side bolstering. Good visibility is what we’ve come to expect from suvs and the Volvo delivers.
As I said it’s been a while since I drove a Volvo and was dumbfounded by its lack of buttons/dials on the dash. Luckily the audio volume still has a dial so no need to fiddle. The large screen is more than an infotainment center, it’s the heart of the car’s controls for everything you can think of and then some. After getting past the first few days of cursing I found the screen easy enough to navigate around, but it did take some getting used to and going through the menus and submenus by tapping, scrolling, swiping and retapping, no matter what size the screen, distracts the eyes from the road. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I wish designers would realize they are working on cars and not a spaceship.
Annoyances are minor there are a few I could do without. It won’t release the parking brake if you’re not wearing your seat belt, pain in the butt if you just want to move it a couple of feet or are trying to maneuver it into a tight spot. Come on Volvo give us some credit! The large tablet-sized screen not only shows greasy fingers it naturally shows more glare.
It’s not perfect but despite the oddities, and that’s what I’ll call them the XC40 is a great little wagon. Hopefully Volvo will step in and remedy them. It attracts lots of attention on the road as well as the mall so be prepared for a lot of questions from the young and old alike. I averaged 9.53L/100 kms which was mostly highway driven, a bit on the high side for the size of the vehicle and considering the roads were dry and suspect it will improve over time.
The Crystal White Pearl paint job added another $900 to the sticker price, 20” wheels ($1,475), the Lava Orange interior trim added another $150. The premium package ($1,750) included some needed niceties for our climate including headlight washers, heated wiper blades (YAY!) heated steering wheel and rear seats. As well as blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert. The Harman Kardon sound system ($900) and nav ($1000) brought the final tally up to $53,890. Not exactly cheap for a compact crossover but on the other hand not dear for a well-equipped, formidable, stylish, comfortable highway cruiser.

For starters, your midsize SUV can comfortably carry up to seven people with the 2-3-2 seating configuration. For full-size versions, the third row can accommodate up to three passengers, raising the seating capacity to eight people. A family of five can be comfortable with a midsize one and even carry enough cargo with them on the go.

Polaris RZR® Factory Racing Wins King of The Hammers for 11th Consecutive Year with Podium Sweep
MINNEAPOLIS — For the 11th consecutive year, a Polaris RZR® took the top spot on the King of The Hammers podium. Polaris RZR Factory driver Mitch Guthrie Jr. secured his back-to-back win in Johnson Valley, Calif. in the all-new RZR XP® Turbo S Velocity.
Guthrie Jr. fought through rain and heavy winds to qualify first. In the main, Guthrie Jr. showcased the terrain-dominating features of the new RZR XP Turbo S Velocity and exercised true talent to outpace the competition in the world’s toughest one-day off-road race.
“We blew a belt and lost the lead. It was totally my fault,” said Guthrie Jr. With a quick belt change, he and co-driver John Crowley, Jr. were able to re-gain the lead again going up Clawhammer. “The RZR XP Turbo S Velocity was flawless.”
Utility Task Vehicles (UTV) were first introduced to King of The Hammers in 2009, and the top spot of the podium at Hammertown has been inhabited by a Polaris RZR every year since.
Polaris RZR Factory drivers Wayland Campbell and Brandon Sims finished second and third, respectively, and completed the all-RZR podium. With a finish time of 5:19:09, Campbell edged out Sims by one minute, three seconds.
“A huge sigh of relief when I pulled into Hammertown,” said Sims. “I just kept thinking ‘Keep it together.’ The RZR was great all day and is a testament to its strength. It was a rough race.”
With another first-place win at the King of The Hammers, Polaris RZR Factory Racing now has three wins and 10 podiums in the 2019 calendar race series. Polaris RZR Factory Racing looks to continue its early 2019 success at WORCS in Lake Havasu, Arizona.

Now that the ship is concept complete, it will enter our development pipeline where many of the answers you see below will be fleshed out, and those missing will be determined and implemented. While it will still be some time before we see the Origin X1 in game, we hope you’re as excited as we are as the game expands with the further development of Origin ships in the Star Citizen universe.

How does X1 Base/Force/Velocity compare against the Nox and Dragonfly in speed, durability, and overall performance?
The X1 Baseline is the all-rounder of the three. Compared to the Dragonfly, the X1 will provide more speed/agility without the rugged terrain handling and additional passenger seat that serves as 1SCU of cargo holding in the Drake offering. You’re going to want to wear an appropriate suit for the environment you expect to be riding through.
How long until we can expect to see the X1 in game?
The X1 is not scheduled for Alpha 3.0 and is intended for a future 3.x patch; we hope to have a better idea the cadence for additional ships coming online once work on 3.0 is finished.
What are the differences between the variants? Right now all the stats say TBD.
Aside from the aforementioned hardpoint changes there will be differences between the default equipped items such as coolers, power plants, shield generators, radars, etc. If you drill down to the default equipment options that are currently visible, you will see the Baseline has Civilian C components, while the Velocity has Competition C and the Force comes standard with Industrial C-Grade fittings. At present, these individual items are currently awaiting names from the Lore Team so are displayed as TBD.
Will there be no-fly-zones in space where small vehicles like spacebikes will be necessary? (ex: minefields, dense asteroid and debris fields, derelict space stations)
Absolutely, spacebikes like the X1 are perfect for short distance exploration in space from parent ships like the examples listed. Asteroids and Debris Fields limit larger ships entry and the distance of the fields make personal EVA quite lengthy so the bikes fill the gap in space. Many of you have already experienced in Arena Commander how different (and perilous!) it can be to navigate larger ships through asteroid clutter.

Ah Citizen, my old friend. Do you know the Vanduul proverb that tells us pizza is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold in space.
Can it hold any cargo?
There is no space for any cargo to be carried on any X1 variant and no plans at present to do an X1 cargo variant. We figured someone would ask, but all vehicles engage in a little give-and-take in design order to do the things that they do. The X1 is a sleek little speedster designed with pilot preservation in mind, while the Dragonfly with its limited 1SCU cargo ability has a more utility focus.
Why is the X1 twice as heavy, as the other similarly sized bikes (1000 vs 2000 kg). Does it have larger components, like a bigger powerplant or bigger main thruster?
With the updated ship stats matrix coming soon all ships will be getting revised mass values and it looks like these values started to sneak out a little early! The website was incorrect to list all three variants with the same weight; they do all weigh different amounts. The Velocity is much closer to the Nox’s weight, the base slightly more and then the Force at the upper end of the scale near to the Dragonfly.
Can the base X1 be upgraded through components to any of the other two superior models?
As mentioned above: not completely due to them being actual variants with fundamental structural differences. You could remove the weapon and swap the internal components out to configure a base X1 similarly to a Velocity but it won’t be as light or nimble as the dedicated variant. Additionally, you could swap the Laser Cannon for the Laser Repeater (or other weapon of choice) and upgrade the internal components to Industrial components like the Force variant, but there still wouldn’t be a structural hardpoint for the second shield generator, so you’d end up with a heavier X1 Baseline. Often, variants represent a design tradeoff where we push a given design to perform even better at certain edges of the envelope, and that makes them special – but we expect overall customization to be part of the fun also, and look forward to the type of X1 you can make for yourself.

The website was incorrect to list all three variants with the same weight; they do all weigh different amounts. The Velocity is much closer to the Nox’s weight, the base slightly more and then the Force at the upper end of the scale near to the Dragonfly.
Can the base X1 be upgraded through components to any of the other two superior models?
As mentioned above: not completely due to them being actual variants with fundamental structural differences. You could remove the weapon and swap the internal components out to configure a base X1 similarly to a Velocity but it won’t be as light or nimble as the dedicated variant. Additionally, you could swap the Laser Cannon for the Laser Repeater (or other weapon of choice) and upgrade the internal components to Industrial components like the Force variant, but there still wouldn’t be a structural hardpoint for the second shield generator, so you’d end up with a heavier X1 Baseline. Often, variants represent a design tradeoff where we push a given design to perform even better at certain edges of the envelope, and that makes them special – but we expect overall customization to be part of the fun also, and look forward to the type of X1 you can make for yourself.

Q&A: Origin X1
Greetings Citizens!
Since the introduction of the Hull Series back in April 2015, every new concept ship reveal has had an accompanying Q&A post, where we spend a couple days collecting questions from you, pass those on to the relevant ship designer, and provide you the best answers we have available at that time.
With the recent addition of Spectrum, we can now allow you to add your vote to the questions you most want to see answered. The questions included below are a combination of those that received the most votes, similar questions that were merged into a single instance, and those we felt we could comfortably answer at this stage in the Origin X1’s development.
Now that the ship is concept complete, it will enter our development pipeline where many of the answers you see below will be fleshed out, and those missing will be determined and implemented. While it will still be some time before we see the Origin X1 in game, we hope you’re as excited as we are as the game expands with the further development of Origin ships in the Star Citizen universe.

How does X1 Base/Force/Velocity compare against the Nox and Dragonfly in speed, durability, and overall performance?
The X1 Baseline is the all-rounder of the three. Compared to the Dragonfly, the X1 will provide more speed/agility without the rugged terrain handling and additional passenger seat that serves as 1SCU of cargo holding in the Drake offering. Versus the Nox, it may not be as fast or as well armed (one gun vs two) but is more durable (hull and pilot-wise) while providing better visibility for the occupant.
The X1 Velocity is more agile than the X1 Baseline due to reduced weight (hull and equipment loadout choice) and can reach higher top speeds than the stock X1. With the X1 Force variant, Infinity Customs has extended the hull section between the tail fins which houses an additional shield generator slot providing more resistance against incoming weapon fire than any other bike currently on the market, including the Dragonfly and Nox. This allows you to shrug off those extra hits in combat should you be discovered during reconnaissance. A scout’s usefulness in recon often depends greatly on being able to bring that information home.
Will the X1 Force have special features such as increased scanning or stealth capability? If so, what kind?
The X1 Force differs from the rest of the X1 lineup and the other snubs by having a second shield generator providing increased defensive capability. With Industrial C-Grade components installed standard, items such as the radar and scanner are of a higher grade than the other X1’s but do not offer any new abilities, simply providing better baseline performance for the same tasks. Under the “exploration” category think of it more as an advanced scout, able to sneak close to enemy forces and observe them and should they be discovered, make successful escape more likely due to an additional shield generator. With only the single S1 gun it may not have the offensive capabilities of the Dragonfly or Nox, but the second shield should offset any advantage Origin’s competitors may possess.
How does a person get into and out of the X1?
The side of the X1 opens up allowing the user to enter/exit and interact with the internal components for repair. Here’s an animation from the early blockout exploring how it works.
How do the three X1 differ? Are they physical hull variants, the same hull but with different loadouts, or just skin swaps?
The three X1’s are designer-customized variants with different physical hulls, courtesy of Alberto Vara. The Velocity contains a Competition C-Grade loadout and lightweight hull optimized for performance, removing unnecessary drag like the weapon hardpoint while the Force has its slightly wider hull designed to house the extra shield generator hardpoint. Due to these special modifications unique to each X1 variant, they cannot be recreated completely by swapping components on the X1 Baseline.
Additionally, we’re looking to address the visibility/readability of what ships are hull variants, paint & loadout swaps, or utilize the module system in the upcoming rework of the ship stats matrix, but it’s worth considering that a space bike, being a very small and tightly constructed vehicle, is a little more limited than larger vehicles in general when it comes to supporting pervasive modularity.
Is there an advantage to having the Origin X1 Baseline over a Velocity or Force? Why would anyone want to use the base model?
It very much depends on what you want to use your X1 for. For the most part, we expect the Velocity to be preferred largely by specialist or dedicated racers, as the lack of weapon hardpoints limit its options for day to day use compared to its variants. With the X1 Force, you can get extra defensive shielding and improved scanning but at the cost of weight and an increase in price; just as the Velocity sheds mass to become a better racer, the Force trades a bit in that department for taking on extra gear. The X1 Baseline may be the most well-rounded of the three at a more comfortable price.
The X1 Force has a S1 Laser Repeater while the Baseline has an S1 Laser Cannon. What’s the difference, and why is one more suitable to fulfill the Force’s role?
Laser repeaters put a more continuous stream of fire down and are better suited for target saturation, while cannons (Ballistic and Laser) require a more precise sense of marksmanship due to their lower rate of fire. Your mileage may vary, but many people generally find repeaters easier to get used to. Also worth noting: default loadouts are exactly that. You may swap out for any S1 weapon that suits your personal preferences.
What advantage does the second shield generator of the FORCE provide? Will it provide life support (atmospheric shielding keeping oxygen in/non-breathable atmosphere out) to the pilot?
The shield generators on the X1 Force are defensive in nature and aren’t a Tevarin-style “air shield” you might find on larger spacecraft. All of the X1 Variants and current spacebikes from Drake and Aopoa are “open-canopy” craft and therefore lack integrated life support. You’re going to want to wear an appropriate suit for the environment you expect to be riding through.
How long until we can expect to see the X1 in game?
The X1 is not scheduled for Alpha 3.0 and is intended for a future 3.x patch; we hope to have a better idea the cadence for additional ships coming online once work on 3.0 is finished.
What are the differences between the variants? Right now all the stats say TBD.
Aside from the aforementioned hardpoint changes there will be differences between the default equipped items such as coolers, power plants, shield generators, radars, etc. If you drill down to the default equipment options that are currently visible, you will see the Baseline has Civilian C components, while the Velocity has Competition C and the Force comes standard with Industrial C-Grade fittings. At present, these individual items are currently awaiting names from the Lore Team so are displayed as TBD.
Will there be no-fly-zones in space where small vehicles like spacebikes will be necessary? (ex: minefields, dense asteroid and debris fields, derelict space stations)
Absolutely, spacebikes like the X1 are perfect for short distance exploration in space from parent ships like the examples listed. Asteroids and Debris Fields limit larger ships entry and the distance of the fields make personal EVA quite lengthy so the bikes fill the gap in space. Many of you have already experienced in Arena Commander how different (and perilous!) it can be to navigate larger ships through asteroid clutter.
How does the X1 Velocity compare to the NOX Kue or Dragonfly for racing purposes?
It depends on where you decide to race. Out of the three listed the Dragonfly can find itself at significant disadvantage in clear terrain and would rely on the other two to make a error to be competitive against them. In more rugged terrain the Dragonfly can find itself taking “short cuts” over geography that would hamper the performance of its competitors. A contest between the Nox Kue and X1 Velocity could be closer, with the Nox having a possible advantage with its fixed thrusters and the ability to start turning more quickly.
If the X1 Force is an exploration variant – will it be able to drop Nav Beacons like the Cyclone Recon?
This is not currently planned as there is nowhere to store the Nav Beacons on the X1.

Product Recalls for the Week of June 26, 2017:
Luxe Satin Children’s Robes: Little Giraffe is recalling its Lux Satin children’s robes because they fail to meet the federal flammability standards for children’s sleepwear, posing a risk of burn injuries to children. This recall involves Luxe Satin children’s long-sleeve robes. The robes are 43 percent acetate with 57 percent rayon, satin outer shell and a 100 percent polyester microfiber inside. The robes were sold in pink, blue and cream in sizes 1 (XS-S/4-6 years), 2 (MD-LG/6-8 years) and 3 (XL-XXL/8-10 years). The robes have two belt loops on each side and an unattached belt. Lot number “21706-DFR001” and “Not Intended for Sleepwear” are printed on the robes inside seam label. Recalled robes were sold at children’s specialty stores nationwide and online at www.littlegiraffe.com from November 2012 through March 2017. Consumers should immediately take the recalled robes away from children and contact Little Giraffe for a full refund. Recall Date: 6/15/2017
Publix Tropical Medley Mix: Publix Super Markets is issuing a voluntary recall for Publix Tropical Medley Mix because it may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. Publix received notification of the potential contamination from their supplier of dried apricot. The 5.7oz clear plastic containers of the mix were sold from Publix retail produce departments in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina with a UPC of 41415088586. All use by dates are being recalled. Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Consumers who have purchased the product in question may return the product to their local store for a full refund. Recall Date: 6/15/2017
Women’s Scarves: iFashioning is recalling women’s scarves because the scarves fail to meet federal flammability standard for clothing textiles, posing a risk of burn injuries to consumers. This recall includes iFashioning women’s fashion scarves. On Amazon.com the scarves were advertised as “iF Silk Elegant Fashion 100% Silk Scarf.” The recalled scarves measure about 64 inches long by 19 inches wide. The scarves were sold in the following colors and patterns: Blackblue, Blackpink, Blackwhite, Blossom-Beige Red, Coffee, Colorful Poppies-Blue Beige, Leaves-Purplesilver, Paisley-Blackreds, Purple, Romantic Bouquet-Salmon Pink and Rose-Purpleblack. There are no tags or labels on the scarves. Recalled scarves were sold exclusively online at Amazon from October 2015 through April 2017. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled scarves and contact the firm for a full refund. iFashioning and Amazon are directly contacting consumers who purchased the scarves. Bicycle Forks: Advanced Composites Inc. is recalling bicycle forks because the fork leg can crack or become damaged, posing a fall hazard. This recall involves select Wound Up Tandem Duo Disc bicycle forks manufactured between June 2015 and December 2015. The forks have a carbon crown and legs and the words “Wound Up” printed on the legs. Serial numbers included in the recall are: AC662, BJ573, CD758, CE779, CE789, CE800, CE805, CE806, CF830, CF831, CG843, CG845, CG848, CG851, CG852, CG853, CG862, CG863, CG865, CH913, CH914, CH915, CH916, CI925, CI926, CI928, CI929, CI931, CI932, CI933, CI973, CI974, CI975, CI976, CK008, CK009, CL056 and CL062. The serial number is engraved on the bottom of the disc brake tab mounted on the fork leg. Recalled forks were sold at independent bicycle frame builders from June 2015 through December 2015. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycle forks and send them back to Advanced Composites for an inspection. Advanced Composites will inspect the forks and provide a free replacement for defective forks including shipping costs. Recall Date: 6/16/2017
Kawasaki Utility Vehicles and ATVs: Kawasaki Motors Corp. U.S.A. is recalling some of its utility vehicles, recreational off-highway vehicles and all-terrain vehicles because the fuel gauge retainer can collapse and leak fuel, posing a fire hazard. This recall involves 2017 Mule™ utility vehicles, Teryx® and Teryx4™ recreational off-highway vicles, and Brute Force® 750 all-t The 2017 Mule utility vehicle is a four-wheel off-highway vehicle with side by side seating for two to six people and automotive style controls. The model name is printed on the right and left front fender. For the Mule SX series and the Mule 4000 series, the vehicle identification number (VIN) is located under the seat. For the Pro models, the VIN is located on the steel frame between the right front lower A-arm mounts. The 2017 Teryx recreational off-highway vehicle is a four-wheel off-highway vehicle with seating for two or four people and automotive style controls. The model name is printed on the right and left front fender. The VIN is located on the steel frame between the right front lower A-arm mounts. The 2017 Brute Force 750 4x4i all-terrain vehicle is a four-wheel off-highway vehicle with seating for one person. The model name is printed on the right and left front fender. The VIN is located on the steel frame between the left front lower A-arm mounts. The vehicles were sold in various colors. Hazen Mesh Office Chairs: Staples the Office Superstore LLC is recalling Hazen Mesh Task chairs because the legs on the base of the chair can break, posing a fall hazard. Staples has received 20 reports of the legs breaking on the chairs, including three reports of injuries resulting in minor cuts and bruises. This recall involves Staples and Quill Hazen Mesh Task chairs. The chair has a five-wheel base, black fabric seat cushion, and black mesh seat back. The chairs have SKU number1058246 and item number 26680 printed on a white label on the underside of the seat cushion. Recalled chairs were sold at Staples’ stores nationwide and online at staples.com, staplesadvantage.com, and quill.com from October 2014 through April 2017. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chairs and contact Staples to receive a free replacement base and instructions for replacing the original base. Recall Date: 6/20/2017
Venture® Catheters: Teleflex Incorporated has announced a worldwide recall of Venture® Catheters voluntarily initiated by its Vascular Solutions, Inc. subsidiary on April 25, 2017. Vascular Solutions, Inc. is the manufacturer of Venture Catheters, which are designed for use in catheterization procedures, to direct, steer, control, and support a guidewire to access discrete regions of the coronary and peripheral vasculature. Two versions may also be used for manual delivery of saline solution or diagnostic contrast agents. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified this as a Class I recall. The FDA defines Class I recall as, “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” The worldwide recall affects 4,679 units distributed in the United States. All unexpired lots of the Rapid Exchange (RX), Over-the-Wire (OTW), and Coronary Sinus (CS) versions of the product have been recalled due to the potential for excess material to be present within the inner lumen of the distal catheter tip. It is possible that the excess material may separate from the catheter during use and pose a potential risk of embolism, which could result in serious injury. Breaded Chicken Products: Maxi Canada, Inc. is recalling an undetermined amount of breaded chicken products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. The products may contain milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label. The frozen breaded chicken items were produced on various dates between June 1, 2016 and June 1, 2017. A complete list of recalled products can be found on the product’s FSIS recall web page. The products subject to recall bear establishment number “348” inside the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide. The problem was discovered when the company received notification from an ingredient supplier that the breading products used in the recalled products potentially contained undeclared milk. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Recall Date: 6/24/2017
Chicken Products: Overhill Farms, Inc. is recalling approximately 54,630 pounds of chicken bites products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically bone, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. The frozen chicken bites were produced on Aug. 30, 2016, Feb. 1, 2017, Feb. 9, 2017 and April 25, 2017. A complete list of recalled products can be found on the product’s FSIS recall web page. The products subject to recall bear establishment numbers “P2824,” “P6009” or “P44058” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide. The problem was discovered after the firm received consumer complaints involving bone found in the recalled product. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Recall Date: 6/24/2017
Potassium Phosphate and Succinylcholine Chloride: PharMEDium Services is conducting a limited, voluntary recall due to Hospira Inc.’s June 15, 2017 recall announcement that microbial growth was detected during a routine simulation of the manufacturing process and therefore there was a lack of sterility assurance. The products being recalled by PharMEDium Services were compounded using certain Hospira products. The recalled products are specific lots of Potassium Phosphate and Succinylcholine Chloride. This is a secondary recall based on Hospira’s recent recall. Per Hospira, in the event that impacted product is administered to a patient, there is a reasonable probability that the patient may experience adverse events ranging from fever, chills and malaise, to severe adverse events including systemic invasive mycoses or systemic bacterial sepsis. The possibility of a breach in sterility assurance in distributed product, while remote, cannot be eliminated. A complete list of recalled products can be found here. PharMEDium Services is notifying customers of the voluntary recall by phone. Customers that have any of the affected medications that are being recalled should immediately quarantine the product, discontinue use and destroy per their hospital protocol. Fireworks: American Promotional Events is recalling TNT Red, White, & Blue Smoke fireworks This recall involves TNT Red, White, & Blue Smoke fireworks. American Promotional Events has received three incident reports, resulting in three people suffering burn injuries. The recalled fireworks are pyrotechnic devices that make smoke when lit. They were sold in a bag containing three canisters: one red, one blue and one white. Each colored smoke firework is a cardboard cylinder tube that measures about 1 inch in diameter and 5 inches long. The TNT logo, “Red, White & Blue Smoke” and UPC number 027736036561 appear on the packaging. Recalled fireworks were sold at Albertsons, Kroger, Meijer, Target, Wal-Mart and other retailers in Illinois, Ohio, Vermont and Wisconsin from May 2017 through June 2017. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fireworks and contact America Promotional Events for a full refund. Recall Date: 6/27/2017
Frozen Fish Tofu, Frozen Fried Fish Ball and Frozen White Fish Ball: Global Lamsheng Kee Inc., Brooklyn, NY is recalling Frozen Fish Tofu, Frozen Fried Fish Ball and Frozen White Fish Ball because they may contain undeclared egg. People who have allergies to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. The recall includes the following products: Lam Sheng Kee Frozen Fish Tofu NET WEIGHT: 240g (8.5OZ), UPC CODE: 4712757550542; Lam Sheng Kee Frozen Fried Fish Ball NET WEIGHT: 227g (8OZ), UPC CODE: 4712757550535; Lam Sheng Kee Frozen White Fish Ball NET WEIGHT: 32.1OZ (910g), UPC CODE: 9555123702252. These products are sold frozen. The recall includes all lots that do not declare egg on the label. The product was distributed at retail stores in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Texas, Michigan and North Carolina. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the products contain major food allergen but not declared in the packaging and it can pose a health risk to certain sensitive individuals. Production of the product has been suspended until FDA and the company is certain that the problem has been corrected. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Recall Date: 6/27/2017
Chest of Drawers: South Shore Industries Ltd. is recalling 5-drawer chests because they are unstable if they are not anchored to the wall, posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children. The chests do not comply with the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary industry standard (ASTM F2057-14). This recall involves Summer Breeze style 5-drawer chests of drawers sold in four colors. Each drawer has two round knobs. The model number is printed on a label on the back of the chest. The chests measure 44-inches high by 31-inches wide and 16-inches deep and weigh 88 pounds. The model numbers and colors include: 3746035 or 3746035A, Royal Cherry; 3294035 or 3294035A, Blueberry; 3219035 or 3219035A, Chocolate; and 3210035 or 3210035A, White. Recalled items were sold online at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Wayfair.com and other online retailers from February 2005 through December 2016. Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled chest that is not properly anchored to the wall and place it into an area that children cannot access. Contact South Shore for a full refund or a free tip-over restraint kit. Fish Products: Vinh Hoan USA, Inc. is recalling approximately 84,000 pounds of imported frozen Swai fillet products that were distributed into U.S. commerce without meeting federal requirements, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. The frozen Swai fillets were produced on various dates between Dec. 16, 2016 and Jan. 7, 2017. Products subject to recall include 15-pound cases containing “MEKONG MASTER Frozen Swai Fillet,” with lot code VN 147 VI 1355 and “BEST BEFORE” dates of “12162018,” “12172018” and “12192018;” 15-pound cases containing “MEKONG MASTER Frozen Swai Fillet,” with lot code VN 147 VI 1351 and “BEST BEFORE” dates of “12232018,” “12242018” and “12252018;” and 15-pound cases containing “MEKONG MASTER Frozen Swai Fillet,” with lot code VN 147 VI 1354 and “BEST BEFORE” dates of “01052019,” “01062019” and “01072019.” The products subject to recall do not bear the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to wholesale locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. The problem was discovered when the import establishment notified FSIS personnel of Swai products entering U.S. commerce without meeting FSIS regulatory requirements for imported Siluriformes. The products were imported from Vietnam and failed to comply with FSIS requirements concerning residue sampling and testing prior to entry into U.S. commerce. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Recall Date: 6/28/2017
Three-Drawer TV Chests: Homestar North America LLC is recalling Stockholm three-drawer TV chests because they are unstable if they are not anchored to the wall, posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children. The chests do not comply with the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary industry standard (ASTM F2057-14). This recall involves Stockholm three-drawer TV chests sold in Java Brown, Sonoma, Sonoma/Java Brown and Java Brown/Sonoma. The chests have a top shelf and three drawers, and measure 40 1/8 inches high by 30 ½ inches wide by 15 3/8 inches deep. Model number 249-09-2740, 249-09-0041, 249-09-2739, or 249-09-3429 is located on the back panel of the units. Recalled chests were sold exclusively at Target.com from May 2015 through August 2016. Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled chest that is not properly anchored to the wall and place it into an area that children cannot access. Comotti Vanity Fixtures: Home Depot Product Authority, LLC is recalling Home Decorators Collection 3-Light and 4-Light Comotti Vanity Fixtures because the light shades can detach and fall, posing laceration and burn hazards. This recall involves Home Decorators Collection 3-Light and 4-Light Comotti Vanity Fixtures. The light fixture styles have 3 or 4 chrome-colored glass shades with clear acrylic ball strands that surround a halogen light. The wall plate is made of reflective stainless steel. The firm has received 108 reports of shades falling, including one report of a laceration to the head that also involved a laceration and burn to the arm and one report of a laceration to the leg. Recalled fixtures were sold exclusively at Home Depot stores nationwide and online at www.homedepot.com from December 2014 through March 2017. Infant Coveralls: Burt’s Bees Baby is recalling its infant coveralls because the snap at the crotch of the coveralls can detach, posing a choking hazard to infants. This recall involves infant Butterfly Garden Coverall & Hat Sets. The coveralls are 100% organic cotton, and were sold in blossom pink with white butterflies. There is a white ruffle around the neck that runs down the front of the garment. It has snaps in the crotch and was sold in infant sizes NB, 3M, 6M, and 9M. The manufacture date code of August 2016 (08/2016) is printed on the inside garment tag located inside the seam of the garment. “Burt’s Bees Baby” and the garment sizes are printed on the inside back of the garment. Only coverall sets with style number LY24195 on the hangtag are included in the recall. Recalled coveralls were sold at Babies R Us, BuyBuy Baby, and online at babiesrus.com, buybuybaby.com, amazon.com, kohls.com, target.com, zulily.com, diapers.com, hautelook.com, and burtsbeesbaby.com from December 2016 through May 2017. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled coveralls and contact Burt’s Bees Baby to receive a pre-paid envelope to return the garment for a $20 e-gift card to be used at www.burtsbeesbaby.com.
