[CNN is Private US Media]
The US has called for “urgent” movement toward a political transition in Haiti, as gangs run amok in the nation’s capital and opposition groups demand Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation.
Henry landed in the US territory of Puerto Rico on Tuesday after days of speculation about his whereabouts. He had been in Kenya last week to sign an agreement securing a Kenyan-led multinational mission to restore security in the Caribbean nation.
According to the Herald, Henry had planned to return to Haiti via the US and the Dominican Republic, but was diverted to Puerto Rico after the Dominican government changed its mind. US officials called Henry mid-flight in an effort to persuade him to step aside in favor of a transitional administration, the report also said.
Asked on Wednesday if the US had asked Henry to resign, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “What we’ve asked (Henry) to do is move forward on a political process that will lead to establishment of a presidential transitional council that will lead to elections.”
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the US “is not calling on (Henry) or pushing for him to resign” but added that “we are urging him to expedite the transition to an empowered and inclusive governance structure” to prepare for the multinational security mission and eventually for elections.
Since Henry’s trip to Kenya, the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince has been gripped by a wave of highly coordinated gang attacks on law enforcement and state institutions. Armed groups have burned down police stations and released thousands of inmates from two prisons, in what one gang leader, Jimmy Cherizier, described as an attempt to overthrow Henry’s government.
Cherizier has taken credit for the attacks and warned of even more dire consequences if the international community “continues to support Henry.”
“If Ariel Henry doesn’t step down, if the international community continues to support Ariel Henry, they will lead us directly into a civil war that will end in genocide,” Cherizier told Reuters in Port-au-Prince on Tuesday.
“The international community, especially the United States, Canada, France, and the Core Group will be responsible for all the people who die in Haiti.”[...]
[Former Haitian Prime Minister] Joseph said Henry’s resignation has been “overdue” since February 7 of this year, referring to the prime minister’s promise to hold elections in 2023. They were never held, with Henry’s administration citing the country’s insecurity as a major obstacle.

Celebrate body positivity with a trip to Puerto Rico!
Tumblr media
The Social Media Algorithm tries to tell us the ideal gay man is chiseled, veiny, white-skinned, smooth-bodied, and spends twenty hours a week in the gym.
For anyone who doesn’t fit in this tiny Adonis-shaped box, be they chubby bears or fuzzy twinks, it’s hard to love and celebrate the body we’re born into. Zach Panzeca built his body-positive photography business, THE MALE COLLECTION, to help everyone see they are beautiful, sexy, and all-around awesome regardless of their body shape.
Now, Panzeca is launching The Unapologetic Body Society, the first-of-its-kind body-positive retreat for men, which takes place May 21–28, 2022 — and all of us are invited, no matter what we look like! Join Panzeca in Puerto Rico for an amazing, uplifting, and seriously fun experience!
Tumblr media
“My job as a photographer is to help you feel empowered and strong,” says Panzeca. “Most body-positive media is focused on women, but men struggle just as much and it’s harder to talk about. It’s time to change that.”
With this event, Panzeca is creating a space where men can put aside their insecurities and celebrate life in their own skin. “A day at the beach can be nerve wracking for bigger guys, but by going as a group, we build confidence and enjoy ourselves without worrying what anyone else might say. I dare anyone to try to mock a group of sassy gay bears,” says Panzeca.
Tumblr media
And in that life-affirming context, the event has a bunch of inclusions that make it a huge bang for the buck. Plus, interest-free payment plans are available to help with your budget. Included in the event:
Seven-night stay at a swanky beachfront hotel
Private photoshoot with Zach, plus beautiful candids from the whole trip
Kayaking in a glowing, bioluminescent bay, one of only five in the world
A boat and beach day at the beautiful Flamenco Beach
Swimming in waterfall-fed pools of the El Yunque National Rainforest
New friends made through meaningful and open-hearted conversations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Puerto Rico is the perfect place for the Unapologetic Body Society’s first retreat. The weather is always 70°–80°, the nightlife is vibrant and exciting, the food is divine, and it’s exceptionally welcoming as the LGBTQ+ Capital of the Caribbean—there’s even a bear bar in San Juan!
No passport is required when traveling from the mainland United States. And with the high vaccination rate in Puerto Rico, this could be the perfect getaway to break out of the winter and pandemic doldrums!

Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, 5 (Branjie) (and background everyone) - Ortega
a/n: HOORAY last of the strictly rewrites!!! thank u sm for ur patience if ur still waiting on chapter 6, i promise i’ll make it soon! lots of lo-ove, by-ee!!
fic summary: Strictly Come Dancing enters its 18th series and its producers, after being goaded by a rival dance show on its inclusivity, commission it to be an all-female cast. Unlike Akeria who’s just here to bone her potential dance partner, dancer Vanessa is ready to act like a professional.
And then TV presenter Brooke Lynn walks into the rehearsal room.
***
“And…one-two-three, one-two-three, one-two-three, one-two-three-”
“Goddamnit shit cunt bitch fuck piss in my mouth,” Brooke exhales frustratedly all at once, and Vanessa holds back an involuntary chuckle. It would be funny if it didn’t hit so close to home. It’s only twelve o’clock and it’s day three of rehearsals but already Brooke’s entire body language is defeated, like a burst balloon, and Vanessa is worried.
It’s all her fault, really. The scores from Saturday night still burn her brain if she thinks about them too much, hot coals on a grate. Twenty one out of forty. If it were a grade in a test it’d barely be a pass, and Vanessa can practically see her eyes turn green in the studio mirrors if she thinks about the fact they were sixth on the leaderboard behind Jan and Jackie, Crystal and Gigi, Monique and Monet, Akeria and Asia and Jaida and Yvie. Vanessa does not do sixth. Vanessa does not do anything other than top three, and the fact that she ended last week in the middle of the leaderboard enrages her. Okay, she knows this isn’t her journey- it’s Brooke’s, but Vanessa has a reputation to uphold; it’s her first year and she cannot be seen as a dud pro. So on Sunday she’d channeled her fighting spirit into an appropriate dance, and this week they’re doing a Paso Doble. Well. They’re meant to be doing a Paso Doble, but it’s fast and it’s frenetic and Brooke isn’t managing to get her head around this one particular section. Vanessa feels like packing it in, to tell the producers they’re doing something else, but really what kind of person would she be if she pulled that stunt? So instead she’s been watching Brooke become increasingly irritated at herself since 8 this morning and tried to come up with a way she can teach it that’ll work.
“This is my fault,” Vanessa verbalises what she’s thinking and bites her lip. “I’ve made this too hard.”
Brooke suddenly freezes and glares at her. “Are you saying I’m shit?”
PANIC. “No, fuck no! That’s not it at all, I just-”
Vanessa suddenly relaxes as Brooke splutters a held-in laugh, thumping her on the arm. “Shut the fuck up, bitch! I was nervous.”
“Not as nervous as I am about this fucking dance,” Brooke sighs, running her hands down her face slowly. Vanessa looks at the clock and makes a decision.
“You hungry?”
Brooke shrugs. “I am quite, now you mention it.”
“Good. Get your jacket. We’re gonna get lunch.”
Brooke winces. “But I still haven’t got-”
“We have got all damn day to learn this motherfuckin’ dance, now will you put your jacket on and let’s go?” Vanessa says firmly, Brooke giving a little laugh, shaking her head in resignation before crossing the room to grab her things. Vanessa’s pleased, and there’s small fireworks going off in her heart. She’s just asked Brooke to lunch and she’s said yes, not that Vanessa gave her much of a choice admittedly. As Brooke holds the door of the studio open for her, Vanessa starts wondering about where they could go to eat. She’s distracted by the way they’re walking down the corridor side-by-side, the way that Brooke stays close to her despite the fact there’s plenty room for them to have their own space. Vanessa feels like putting an arm around her waist, then decides against it. That kind of contact is special, reserved for a Saturday night after their dance is over and they’re standing together in front of the judges.
They walk out into the chilly October air, and Vanessa’s regretting only taking her hoodie out with her. The weather is quintessentially British- it had been raining that morning but now it has subsided, so the paving slabs glisten with puddles and the cars that go by roll smoothly through the rain-sheened roads and the grey clouds still hang heavy and ominous in the sky. Normally weather like this makes Vanessa yearn for her trips back to Puerto Rico, where the October temperatures are what the UK could only dream of in Summer, but standing outside in the cold and damp doesn’t seem so bad with Brooke looking at her expectantly.
“Where d’you wanna go?” she asks her. Brooke shrugs.
“Starbucks? Take it back and we can eat while we practise?”
Vanessa lets out a laugh and rolls her eyes, both irritated and impressed by Brooke’s dedication. She has a think and then remembers that place a few streets along from the studios where she, Akeria and Monique had grabbed brunch one time before a pro dance rehearsal. The thought of poached eggs with golden yolks on avocado toast makes her stomach rumble and she jerks her head in its direction. “C’mon.”
The walk and the fresh, icy air works a treat at clearing Vanessa’s head and by the time she and Brooke grab a wobbly wooden table by the steamed-up window in the cafe she’s feeling loads better about their Paso even though technically it’s still a mess. She picks up the menu despite knowing exactly what she wants and gives it a scan before Brooke plucks it unceremoniously out of her hands.
“Hey!”
“What?” Brooke smirks knowingly. Vanessa doesn’t complain further, instead indulging in the way Brooke’s eyes dart about as she scans the dishes on the menu, the way her brow furrows and the way she bites her bottom lip as she thinks. When Brooke looks at her again, Vanessa rushes to pretend she hadn’t had her eyes on her first.
“They have some really nice stuff here.”
Vanessa nudges the fork on the table a little to the left. “Me, Kiki an’ Monique went here a couple weeks back. They both had pancakes and they were really good apparently, so…”
She tails off, and Brooke nods. “You’re close with them, huh?”
“Well, we’re all kind of like sisters. All the dancers. In, like…the most literal way possible. We bicker and bitch and steal each others’ makeup and clothes but we love each other underneath it all. But yeah, those two are my girls,” Vanessa smiles involuntarily as she thinks about her friends. She thinks before adding, “They helped me through all the shit last year.”
Brooke smiles sympathetically and nods. “That’s cute that you’re all, like, a family.”
“It’s real nice. ‘Specially since all I really have here is my Mom, and I don’t get to see her all that often.”
Brooke leans her chin on her hands, listening intently. Vanessa realises she’s left her last sentence a little cryptic, so she elaborates. “We came over from San Juan when I was two. Fuck knows why my Mom wanted to leave, but we did. The rest of my family’s still over there- my Abuela, my Tia and Tio, all my lil’ cousins.”
“Do you get to visit much?” Brooke asks. Vanessa nods a yes.
“Way more nowadays than I ever got to when I was little. Obviously when we first came here we didn’t have a huge amount of money but my Mom always made sure to save enough to fly back every Summer for the school holidays an’ stuff.”
Vanessa pauses and looks out of the window. Her stomach feels tight with guilt. “But obviously it got harder when I started wanting to dance, cuz hell, if this country don’t like giving out free school meals then they sure as hell hate subsidisin’ your dance classes.”
Brooke laughs humourlessly in agreement. Vanessa picks at her cuticles as she keeps talking, stares at the table to avoid Brooke’s eyes. “So there were sometimes Summers when we couldn’t afford to go back over because of me. That was hard. My Mom was always really good about it and encouraged me and said it was fine but I still remember her on the phone to my family and how much she cried afterwards…damn. I felt like shit. Guess I still do.”
Brooke pulls a sympathetic face. “But I mean, you’ve been able to go back since then, right? So what do you have to be guilty for?”
“I don’t know,” Vanessa shrugs sharply, frowns a little. “I guess it was just selfish of me. Lookin’ back I should’ve thought about my Mom more.”
“Yeah, but it all worked out for the best. You’re now able to fly her out way more frequently because of the career you’re in, because of the sacrifices you both made back then. Right?”
Vanessa feels something bloom in her ribcage as she smiles at Brooke. Her eyes are kind and she’s talking like a therapist and listening to all of Vanessa’s pent-up guilt and regret even though she has absolutely no responsibility or obligation to do so. “Yeah. Sorry. I just kinda dumped all that on you.”
Brooke shakes her head. “Don’t be silly. This is nice.”
Nice. It is nice. It’s nice to sit in a busy, cosy cafe with Brooke while outside is cold and damp and talk about her life and be listened to. Vanessa feels content and peaceful for the first time perhaps since this competition started. Her mind hasn’t been this clear in a while.
“What about your family?” Vanessa asks. Brooke smiles involuntarily as she gazes at the ceiling. It’s cute.
“Aw, I miss them so much. My Mommy, my total queen and my rock. I love her,” she says happily. Vanessa can’t help but smile at her words. She knows what it’s like to cling to her Mom as growing up they only really had each other. Brooke folds her arms as she continues. “And then I’ve got my older brother and two older sisters who I love to death as well. But I don’t miss my sisters. Well, I don’t miss the way they borrow half my fucking outfits.”
Vanessa snorts a laugh as Brooke shakes her head long-sufferingly. “So you’re the baby of the family then?”
Brooke shrugs. “An overgrown baby at thirty years old, but yeah. All my siblings are either in relationships or married so you can imagine how fun that is whenever I go back to Canada, getting questioned by the fucking relationship Gestapo.”
The sentence makes Vanessa’s heart start climbing the stairs of hope, and she’s not even attempting to stop it. She fidgets with a corner of her paper napkin as she speaks again. “Oh, so you ain’t…you’re not seeing anyone at the moment, then?”
“Why, who’s asking?” Brooke cocks an eyebrow. Vanessa instantly feels her cheeks flood scarlet, and Brooke lets out a howl of a laugh. “Kidding, kidding! No, I’m not seeing anyone.”
“Right, right,” Vanessa nods as nonchalantly as she can. She thinks about testing deeper conversational waters, considers killing two birds of curiosity with one stone. They’re on the topic of relationships, and who knows when they’ll get onto it again, so she decides to dive in. “Just thought you might, y’know…have a boyfriend. Or somethin’.”
“No, no boyfriend,” Brooke says simply. She leans her head on the fist she’s made and raises her eyebrows a little, giving Vanessa a quick once-over. “Or girlfriend.”
It’s the answer she’s been hoping for, confirming her suspicions that Brooke’s into girls, but the flirting panics her and so Vanessa reaches for the discarded menu to fidget with as she lightly shrugs, moving the conversation along with all the tact and delicacy of a steamroller. “So you live on your own then?”
“Yeah. Just me.”
“Me too. You like it?”
Brooke pulls a face, looks down in thought for a second. “Sometimes. Part of me likes the feeling of being completely on my own, because I can do literally whatever the hell I want, take things at my own pace. There’s nobody to nag me or tell me what to do. I realise that makes me sound literally half my age, but it’s true. I can sing as loud as I want.”
“You sing?” Vanessa asks, intrigued. Brooke laughs.
“I didn’t say I sing well!” she snorts, and Vanessa lets out a giggle too. Brooke continues, her gaze focused on the world outside the window as she speaks. “It’s nice though, that feeling of freedom. On the other hand I just miss, like…coexisting with someone? I don’t know. Like when I came to uni over here and I had flatmates and there was that feeling of comfort to know that there was always someone in the next room to talk to, or make dinner with, or just watch TV with. Just someone to do normal shit with. You know?” Brooke narrows her eyes as she finishes her sentence, appealing to Vanessa.
“Yeah, I get it,” Vanessa replies, letting out a little sigh as she lets a few memories in and then slams that particular door firmly shut. “I miss that too, sometimes.”
The silence lingers between the two of them for a second before Brooke speaks again, her tone upbeat and cheerful. “But I mean, for the most part, my flat’s great. It’s part of this new-build, hi-tech apartment complex that only got done building last year. We’ve got a gym, there’s a shop at the bottom, there’s meeting rooms we can book…”
“Yeah, I think you told me about the gym once,” Vanessa nods in recognition, and Brooke’s smile widens as she has an idea.
“You should come round some time. You’d love it.”
Vanessa tries to stop the blush that threatens to hit her face. The invitation is personal and not rehearsal or show related, and that fact shouldn’t make her as happy as it does. She fixes Brooke with a smile and nods shyly. “Yeah. That’d be cool.”
Still visibly buoyed, Brooke reaches across the table and rests her hand on top of Vanessa’s, patting it gently. There’s a little spark of static when they touch, a metaphor come to life. When Brooke smiles at her, Vanessa feels comfortable.
“This was a good idea. Thanks for dragging me out.”
Vanessa shrugs, doesn’t move her hand. She smiles lazily at her dance partner. “It’s okay. We both needed a break.”
As the waiter comes to take their order Brooke’s hand flies out from its position on top of hers, but Vanessa doesn’t mind. There’s a connection that’s been forged that isn’t physical, and she knows it’s still there even if Brooke’s hand isn’t.
Rehearsal ends up going smoother the rest of that day. Okay- it’s not perfect, but Brooke starts picking it up and Vanessa’s mind is less cloudy. Thursday brings more rain and full runs of the dance that don’t go smoothly but Vanessa is relieved because at least they’ve fucking learned it. By Friday they’re exhausted and worn out and Vanessa hates this dance, hates this fucking dance, but it’s one step closer to being over for good. She’s disappointed when it occurs to her that they’re not going to get particularly favourable scores- their run is still riddled with mistakes, but at least Brooke’s worked hard on what she was critiqued for last week. Her core is stronger due to the planks Vanessa’s been making them both do at the start of every rehearsal and her elbow hasn’t drooped once- not that there’s much chance for it to during a Paso, but at least the judges will be able to see that she’s taking their comments on board. Vanessa’s proud of her. She tells Brooke so before they go home on Friday night, when it’s quiet outside and different shades of dark. She thinks Brooke might be blushing as she thanks her and says goodbye, but she can’t be sure.
Saturday happens in a frighteningly fast blur- there’s excitement but it’s nervous instead of anticipative, as everybody knows that tonight one couple will be eliminated. Vanessa’s not really worried about that though- the bottom of the leaderboard last week was comprised of Courtney and Blair, Plastique and Scarlet, Willam and Phi Phi and Aja and Farrah, so in comparison she supposes sixth isn’t too bad. Her aim for tonight’s dance had been to climb up the leaderboard a bit, but knowing how their Paso’s been going Vanessa will call it a success if they both stay where they are.
It turns out they drop down to seventh behind Shea and Peppermint, after their American Smooth has the judges on their feet. Brooke and Vanessa’s Paso goes…well, it goes. It’s not the best they’ve done it but it’s done, thank God, and they never have to do it again.
Unless of course they’re in the dance off. But Vanessa doesn’t permit herself to think about that. Instead, she thinks about the warmth of Brooke’s hand in hers as they walk through the corridor together after their judge’s critiques and their interview. Neither of them address the fact their hands are entwined, and that’s okay. Vanessa likes it like that.
“You okay?” she asks Brooke, halfway down the hallway, as their character shoes squeak quietly against the laminate flooring and they cast fleeting shadows against the manila walls.
Brooke sighs a little, gives a half-hearted shrug. “Yeah.”
“No you’re not. C’mere,” Vanessa frowns, using the hand she’s holding to pull Brooke into a hug. It’s gentle and tight all at once, the way Brooke’s strong arms are holding her close contrasting with the way her hands are light against her back. Brooke smells of a Saturday night: tan in a bottle and hairspray and Jimmy Choo Flash perfume. It’s not like her usual scent of freshly-washed hair and her fabric softener (Lenor Gold Orchid- Vanessa had smelt them all rather self-indulgently on her last trip to Tesco to work out which was Brooke’s).
“I don’t want to let you down,” Brooke whispers above her, and Vanessa can tell she’s got tears in her eyes without even having to look into them. She takes a deep breath and shakes her head against her chest.
“You could go out there, forget the entire dance and do the fucking Macarena for all I care. You always make me proud.”
Vanessa feels Brooke press a kiss to the top of her head and it sets off a blush she can feel spreading down her face onto her neck and across her chest. Brooke had kissed her again after their dance had finished, quick and emphatic against her temple, and it had set off butterflies in her stomach that threatened to fly up into the rigging of the lights. Vanessa wants to get caught up in the moment, wants even to hold her gaze and see how she’d react if she asked to kiss her properly, but instead she pulls herself out of the hug. She keeps their hands connected though and as she meets Brooke’s eyes and finds that she’s smiling at her, Vanessa concludes it was the right decision to make.
“Fuck the scores,” she says, remembering each paddle (4, 5, 5, 5) with a sting as if she’s been smacked with them. “The Paso wasn’t for us and it’s over now. On to the next one.”
“Unless we’re in the dance off.”
“Brooke Lynn, Bianca gave Blair a two. I think we’ll be fine.”
Vanessa isn’t wrong, and it turns out their position looks better compared to some of the other dances they see once they’ve been through makeup to get neatened up again. Poor Scarlet tries her best to get through her Jive with Plastique but her feet just aren’t doing the things Vanessa knows Scarlet wants them to, and the judges give them a combined score of fifteen. Scarlet looks deflated as she leaves the dancefloor and the moment their interview is over Vanessa watches as Yvie pulls her into a hug (Vanessa knows that type of hug because she’s just given Brooke the exact same one). Aja and Farrah’s Samba wasn’t great either and they earn themselves a mark of seventeen. Despite this, though, by the time the show finishes and they have to assemble to film the results (which are pre-recorded and then broadcast on a Sunday), they’re both a bag of nerves. She and Brooke are placed on the stairs with a spotlight burning down onto them, ants under a magnifying glass. The mood between the couples is decidedly tense, and as Vanessa looks down at the girls on the dancefloor she sees Monet squeeze Monique’s waist as Monique sighs and rests her head against the other girl’s shoulder. Vanessa wants to scoff at the fact they both seem nervous. The waltz they did almost brought the house down and they even got a nine from Laganja, so unless the only votes they got were ones they gave themselves, they’re very likely to be safe.
Michelle does her intro and, as the lights go down, Vanessa feels as if her heart is going to break her ribcage it’s beating so heavily.
“I can now reveal that the first couple safe and through to next week is…”
Long pause. The beat of a drum and Brooke’s pulse that Vanessa can feel through the hand she’s holding. Vanessa is so nervous that she casts her eyes up to the heavens. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee…
“Jan and Jackie!”
Jan screams and Jackie falls gratefully into her arms as she yells a “thank you!” at the camera that’s barely heard over the applause.
“The second couple safe is…”
Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Vanessa gives a minute bow of her head like her Mom taught her to do at mass when she was little. Is it sacreligious to pray if you’re lapsed? Some priests probably think so. Vanessa hopes it’s working in their favour anyway.
“Heidi and Vixen!”
Vanessa can’t see their reaction as they’re positioned above them at the very top of the stairs, and she doesn’t want to turn around in case…it’s bad luck? She doesn’t know. At this point she’s not risking anything, not even looking up to see Brooke’s face.
“The next couple safe and through to next week is…”
Holy Mary, Mother of God…you take away the sins of the world? Nah, that’s the wrong one. Fuck.
“Gigi and Crystal!”
Vanessa wants to roll her eyes, much as she’s happy for her friend. Of course they’re safe. They were second on the leaderboard last week and first tonight after a scarily in-sync Charleston. It comes as no surprise to her.
“The first couple in tonight’s dance-off will be…”
Vanessa feels truly nauseous. It wouldn’t be impossible for it to be them, stranger things have happened on the show. What the fuck is that next line? Holy Mary, Mother of God…
“Blair and Courtney.”
Vanessa’s heart feels as if it’s been shocked by jumpleads. She feels Brooke give an involuntary squeeze of her hand, and Vanessa strokes her thumb against hers in return. They just need to not be the other couple in the dance off. It’s doable.
“The next couple safe and through to next week is…”
…pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death-
“Brooke and Vanessa!”
Vanessa doesn’t screech or scream. Instead she finally turns to Brooke, who’s meeting her smile with a matching one plastered across her own face. She falls into her outstretched arms in relief, and mumbles a “thank you” to the camera while Brooke holds her tight. They’ve made it. They live to fight another week.
Amen.
Of course, one couple isn’t so lucky and, after a tense dance-off between Scarlet and Plastique and Blair and Courtney, it turns out Blair is the first celebrity to leave the competition. The girls get upset- the celebrities have all become a part of their big, crazy family now, and it’s sad that Vanessa will no longer hear Blair laugh at something Vixen has said, or compliment her on her makeup, or ask to get selfies with everyone in the dressing room. It’s Vixen, though, who is affected the most by Blair’s departure. Vanessa knows they’re good friends but she wonders if perhaps they’ll ever become something more as she watches Vixen cling to Yvie and sob and sob. The moment they’re all allowed, the pros and celebrities flood the dancefloor as Blair and Courtney dance their last dance. Vixen makes a beeline for Blair and Courtney graciously steps out of her way so the pair of them can hug and cry in tandem.
“Shit, this is rough,” Vanessa mutters to nobody in particular. Monique, who’s materialised beside her, shrugs.
“Yep, well. I don’t plan on havin’ to go through it, so it’s not a problem for me.”
Vanessa snorts at her friend’s cockiness, then pulls a sympathetic face as Blair approaches the pair of them, all streaming mascara and sniffles.
“C’mere, baby. You did so well, be proud of yourself,” Vanessa offers to her, and Blair smiles gently before her face crumples again.
“Just…look after my girl, okay?” she asks them hopefully. Monique smiles, rubs her forearm gently.
“Oh, sweetie, Courtney will be fine, she’s a big girl.”
“Courtney?” Blair asks, confused. Then she appears to realise something and she smiles back at Monique, a little embarrassed. “Oh no, um…I meant Toni. Can you both look out for her? Make sure she’s okay after I’m gone? I mean I know her and Heidi are going to go far, but…y’know.”
Vanessa wants to cock an eyebrow at Monique in recognition, but she doesn’t. Instead she gives Blair a reassuring look, takes her hand and squeezes it gently. “Sure we will.”
Appeased, Blair thanks them and gives them both a hug before moving on to say goodbye to some of the other girls. As she walks away, Vanessa hears Monique give a big sigh beside her. She tilts her head at her friend inquisitively. “You ‘kay?”
“Yeah, uh…” Monique sighs, rubs her eyes a little. “Could we do lunch at some point this week? Me, you, Kiki. I just need my girls’ advice.”
“About what?” Vanessa asks her. Then, as she follows Monique’s gaze over to where Monet is standing talking to Shea and Aja, the penny drops. “Oh. OH. Okay. Yeah, we’ll do lunch, bitch.”
Monique smiles gratefully at her, then gives her a hug and a goodnight as she’s starting choreography early tomorrow. The coming week’s theme is movies, which is always fun, and Vanessa already has a number in mind. It’s ridiculous, and so quintessentially Strictly. She can’t wait to show it to Brooke.
As Vanessa thinks of Brooke, she finds her eyes scanning the group of girls to see where she is. She’s smiling as she’s talking to Plastique and Scarlet, her smile bright and dazzling and her eyes kind. The lights are hitting her highlight and making it look as if she’s glowing, and her hair catches the light too in its smooth and glossy bun.
Vanessa feels her heart yearn, and she considers the possibility that perhaps it won’t just be Monique talking about the feelings she has for her partner when they both go to lunch with Akeria.

Ok, so 2019
This year was a mix of goods and okays. This for sure feels like a transition point, where normal is not comfortable, and change is imminent. We have our sights on new adventures in the West coast. And while it didn't come to fruition this year, the intent has been built and we are set to make 2020 a big turn. But first, let's recap 2019:
2019 was no slow down of travel from the past, which really is our ambition. With the help of Southwest companion pass, we were able to take advantage and travel to many places. Plus the job flew me out to a few additional location, as well as two interviews in San Francisco was of some one else's dime. Let's go through the list:
San Francisco: same for an interview, stayed for my 30th birthday celebration with the SF crew. Cat Cafe, a couple brunch spots, improv show. Always a good time and perhaps a little taste of what's to come. I was flown out a second time, and while quick, was able to fit in a quick night adventure with Kim. It was heartbreaking for this opportunity not to come into fruition, but on to the next as they say.
Easley SC: quick trip for work, not much here but hey, free travel
Washington DC/Virginia: fun trip with Ashley, exploring the city. At the time DC was a possible location to move, and we did get good vibes. We spent time hanging out with Ashley's old friends, and sightseeing. I haven't been to DC since I was a kid, so seeing the monuments now I had a better appreciation. Tied to this trip was a quick visit to Manassas, to see my cousins and his two daughters. That was a nice quick visit to get some ice cream in town and some real BonChon haha.
Puerto Rico: always a favorite, hanging out with Ashley's family, we went hiking up parts of El Yunque, beach times and just hanging out. I had a delicious Cuban sandwich chopped up perhaps in a Puerto Rican style. Delicioso.
Park City Utah: this was a fun trip for Sheri's birthday. A lot of the schmooters crew came out for to stay in a cabin like house within the valley of a bunch of ski mountain. We were at the tail end of winter/spring, but thanks to climate change we did see snow(and briefly hail) which added to the trip. Jacuzzi while snowing, party games, staying in, and watching the stars. Pretty awesome trip and a true showing that it we really come together for each other, not necessarily for the city.
Jacksonville: quick trip to see Ashley's cousin, little 4th of July action
St. Augustine: back to back I believe weekends from Jacksonville to see Becca Matt and Mason.
Raleigh North Carolina: Anthony's wedding, Raleigh has a surprisingly cultured downtown. Had time to grab different bites, plus explore downtown, NC state, drive pass the museum of art, and take a rest in the wildlife forest by the airport.
Titusville: a few times we visited Eddy, going to the local beach (which had some wild big waves, that was awesome to boogy board) and also see Eddy's new house, plus a rocket launch!
Portland Maine: quick work trip to diagnose an issue, caught this town in the thick of fall. Beautiful fall colors, it's a shame I never made it past half a mile from the airport. But did get to eat Maine's favorites: lobster bisque and blueberry pie.
Montego Bay Jamaica: celebrating 15 years with Ashley (officially half of our lives together), it was a fun all inclusive resort. Jamaican patties everyday, curried goat, and great Thai as well. Not enough time, but very enjoyable
Milwaukee WI: glad to get here one more time for training paid by the company. I was able to hit a few favorites plus a few new spots, saw Julia Michaels in concert, watch the Bucks play at a crazy sports bar, watched Parasite at a beautiful old theater, and listened to classical guitar at a museum of art. I love the city a lot and had a lot of time to get to know it. This may be the last time I get to go on company dime, but I really hope it's not the last time I visit. I'd love to get property to frequently visit as I get older, trully a place that has my heart.
Tampa: wild Thanksgiving weekend of Ocala straight to Tampa, including three different hotels in the 5 days. But Tampa/St. Pete is always a good time, and we were there to see Lizzo
Las Vegas: AJ's bachelor party with his cousins and the schmooters fam. It's funny to see how we grow up, because during my bachelor party we sardine canned 11 guys into 2 rooms, and went everywhere as a crew. This time most of us got separate rooms and split up frequently to do our own thing. But we had great moments together, and Ashley and I had a little extra time to ourselves. Las Vegas is always a great and expensive time. It helps to win in craps and roulette, but eventually the house always wins haha.
Wow. Every year I'm surprised by how much travel we accomplish, and would be surprised to think the next year would be just as much. But thanks to the companion pass, points, and Tracy's Hilton friends and family, we manage to do a lot on a discount. I love it and grateful we can do it year after year.
A couple highlight shows this year:
Improv show in San Francisco
Hamilton: wow worth all the hype, and loads of
listening to the soundtrack and mixtape
Sabrina Claudio: nice to see here again live, what a great voice, and to see her at a venue with her headlining
Julia Michaels: wow this one too. I love one of her songs, but being able to know the setlist ahead of time, I had the chance to fall in love withore of her songs, and to know the words to all of the songs. What a performer and her and her band make one of my favorite shows ever
Harry Potter orchestra: we did the first movie, but the composition of this movie is exceptional we couldn't miss it
Lizzo/Sam Smith: Ashley's wish to see Lizzo in concert, a whim decision in the middle of the night I planned the entire trip to Tampa. It was cool to go back to a Jingle ball concert (my first concert was a jingle ball) and the setlist was pretty decent.
Other highlights:
Story corp: Ashley and I recorded a podcast, going through our relationship. It was a fun time and cool to have a piece of us be preserved in a national archive.
Marriage classes: continuing from 2018 we did a set of marriage classes. We enjoy these to help fortify our relationship and make sure we communicate to each other clearly. Highly recommend for any couple getting married.
Coffee shop Sundays: we started this in heavy pursuit to look for new opportunities, it allowed us to explore new spaces in the Orlando area (and even in Miami). It's a nice way to spend time with Ashley, as well as follow through with our intents.
No Shave November: first time participating, I thought I'd try to see what growing my beard would be like, plus if I can raise money for Cancer. Well surpriaingly I raise $291, and matching that to a total of $581 to various cancer research organizations. It's compelling the power of contributing as a community can be, when many times it can be doubting to try and do it alone.
Okay, last tidbits:
Best thing I ate this year: Cuban sandwich in Puerto Rico
Best thing I drove this year: learned to sail a Hobie catamaran in Jamaica
Best game I played this year: Fire Emblem Three Houses
This year was a weird mix of stagnation but also pandemonium. It constantly felt like we were always going somewhere on the weekends and on vacation, with very few days of just being in the house. But also at work and our jobs, we feel very stagnant as I haven't seen any progression in my profession since last year. This has truly set a spark in Ashley and I looking collectively for new opportunities, and we hope to see this come to fruition in 2020. It surely be an adventure this coming year, we can only hope it is filled with fun adventures and fulfillment.
Cheers

Panama - A Great Royal Holiday Vacation Club
Tumblr media
There are numerous exotic travel destinations inside the Caribbean that almost everyone is aware of, like Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, and so on.-in order to refer to several. Hardly any imagine Panama as a cozy beach location to check out. But, it is a very fascinating and memorable destination for an excellent vacation.
While the seashore resort we visited is not really in the Caribbean (it really is about the Pacific Sea side), the Royal Decahedron Seaside Holiday resort offers a beautiful golden sandy seaside, the warm spectacular environment that certain is looking for, Royal Holiday Vacation Club and several exciting spots for vision-seeing, the key one particular becoming, of course, the Panama Canal. There are actually the normal great sunsets, comfortable ocean waves lapping the shoreline, numerous private pools, stunning palm bushes and manicured exotic crops inside the resort. The all-inclusive Noble Decahedron delivers wonderful food with 6 a-Los Angeles-carte designed restaurants, and also two buffet dining places and numerous cafes and goody-pubs. There is a disco, a gambling establishment, golf courts, a spa, and a around-by playing golf course-essentially almost everything a visitor could request.
Royal Holiday Vacation Club standard seashore resort features. What's particular about Panama in particular?
Initial, and most important, a brief history of Panama and the Panama Canal is fascinating, and that i is not really a record buff. I won't get into a major historical past course in this article; nevertheless the Panama Canal is actually a wonder in engineering and one of the more important waterways on earth. The canal stretches from Panama Metropolis on the Pacific coastline to Colorectal about the Atlantic aspect, and is 80 km (or 50 a long way) long. Around 12,000 beach-heading vessels utilize the canal each year, nudging their way through the thin canal and growing all around from the different tresses to compensate for the big difference in elevation between your two oceans. You will find huge tracts of virgin forest on aspects from the canal. It can be absolutely a memorable vision to view the large vessels pass through the hair. It is a must-see when checking out Panama. Since the vacation resort we were in was on the Pacific coastline, we stopped at the Mira Flores Tresses, in the northeastern fringe of Panama Metropolis.
Royal Holiday Vacation Club provides site visitors a great view of the fastens functioning and possesses a really exciting museum affixed. We took the town And Canal Visit (at a cost of roughly $65 US) which we were able to obtain a amazing tour of Panama Area along with see the Mira Flores Locks actually in operation. There are actually, however, Part Transit Tours (approx. $96 US) of about 4 several hours long which begin in Gamboa, situated at the to the north conclusion in the Gaillard Minimize where the Chagres Stream passes in to the Canal. Your vessel would move through the Pedro Miguel Locks and the Mara Flores Locks, in which the vessel is decreased 18 meters in 2 techniques, as well as your voyage, would stop on the beautiful Flamenco Marina. Needless to say, additionally there is a full canal trip onboard the Pacific Princess, where you can go through the canal in close up operations. This could be a as soon as inside a life time journey where you could have the feeling of going up or down inside the hair to acquire in one seas towards the other. There is also a rail journey offered that you excursion together-area the Canal although sitting down easily over a workout.

Pokemon Life Memories #1: A Burmy in the Greenway
So, I finally watched the Pokémon: Detective Pikachu movie. I’ll be sharing my thoughts about it in another post. One thing I will say, however, is that I loved the slice-of-life view we got of what it could be like to live in a realistic Pokémon world. Because of this, I’ve decided to take real accounts of my life, alter, and re-tell them with the inclusion of Pokémon. These won’t be in any specific linear order, but there will be continuity between them, since they are based on my real life. I hope you all enjoy this!
What better story to begin with than the one where I caught my very first Pokémon. You see, I had just moved to Orlando, Florida from my small hometown of Lajas, Puerto Rico.
My mother didn’t despise Pokémon; instead, she “admired them from afar” (her words). She was sorta afraid of them. Something having to do with a Furfrou her mother had back when she was young. A story for another time. Anyway, because of this, the Pokémon we were allowed to have in the house were very limited and caught by my father. By the time I moved out, my sister was very attached to our Mightyena and our Glameow was pretty old. My sister would obviously keep Mightyena. That part was obvious. And Although I was clearly Glameow’s favorite, I didn’t want to risk stressing her out by moving her to a brand new environment. So she stayed back in Lajas with my parents.
When I moved to Orlando, I had no car to get around. Furthermore, I didn’t know anybody here so I had little to do on the weekends. Instead, I discovered this nice jogging route near my apartment called The Greenway. I loved it. It was nice and relaxing and not that many people used it, so I could lose myself in deep thought for hours. It was also big. It would easily take me an hour to get from where I lived to my usual stopping point. In short, it felt like my own private getaway.
Tumblr media
Pokémon weren’t uncommon there. It being Florida, there were plenty of Totodile and Croconaw basking by the river’s edge. Once, I saw a Feraligatr. To say I was intimidated would be an understatement. I also spotted a lone Torkoal strolling by itself and Squirtle were always easy to see. Pidgey, Fletchling and the ocassional Spearow were also common. But the one that truly caught my attention was a little sleeping Burmy, hanging from a nearby rail.
It had a Plant Cloak on. I must’ve been gawking at it for quite some time, ‘cause it woke up to catch me staring at it. Please keep in mind, that I had never seen one back in Puerto Rico. I don’t even know if Burmy could eveb be found there. I was embarrased, so I quickly took off, leaving it behind. However, in the next couple of days I kept seeing it at the same spot. One day, I swear it was following me. I turned around to notice it had moved a couple of feet closer to where I was. One day, it relocated to a high branch that hung over the trail. It “accidently” fell on top of me. I didn’t mind, though. I proceeded to carry it for the rest of my trip and then left it back near the tree when I was done for the day.
Tumblr media
One day, I decided to take the leap. I had a little money saved up on the side, and decided to buy a Poké Ball. I founnd Burmy in the same spot as usual. After staring at eachother for a while, I placed the Poké Ball on the ground and walked away. It wasn’t long until I heard the Ball open and then close. I turned around to finally hear that satisfying joybringing sound. CLICK!

*Here’s a picture of the actual bagworm I saw at The Greenway.

Dark tourism at Punta Cana
Tumblr media
Wanting to know more about “the other side of beauty” of islands in the Caribbean, I decided to talk with one of my cousins, Josué Pérez. Josué is 30 years old, an electrical engineer living in Isabela, Puerto Rico, and the type of guy that LOVES to talk with everyone he meets. Initially I wanted to talk to him because he has traveled a lot in recent years and I wanted to know his perspective on this theme. Giving him a background about my blog’s main theme, he agreed and told me he had a good journey to describe, where he found this other side of beauty.
Josué, can you tell me what’s the first thing that came to your mind when I mentioned the title of my blog?
I thought that it was a like a metaphor or something related to poetry. It’s like when you see something beautiful, but there’s another thing to it.
Have you seen this “other side of beauty” in every place you’ve visit?
Well, I can’t say I’ve seen all of it, because it depends on the type of vacation I’m going or the purposes. For example, my job requires me to travel frequently to different states in the US and during these trips we can’t waste so much time visiting places or being a typical tourist. We basically go to the different companies we’re assigned and present our projects, go to meetings and coordinate the upcoming projects.
Do you remember a beautiful place you visited but found a heartbreaking or difficult sight?
Yes! A place I’ll always remember is Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Can you tell me more about this trip to Punta Cana and what was the purpose of it?
I’ve always wanted to go to Punta Cana because many friends have told me great things about the hotels, the delicious food and tourism! My wife, Paola, and I talked about the possible places we wanted to go for our honeymoon trip. Initially we wanted to visit some places in Europe, but our wedding and the construction of our new house made us use our savings and we couldn’t afford the trip we wanted. Later, we decided to go to Dominican Republic for our honeymoon, because we found an all-inclusive vacation plan in Punta Cana that was very affordable, and the benefits looked great. Neither one of us had visited Punta Cana, and it was the perfect moment!
What did you felt when you arrived at Punta Cana? It was like you expected?
When Paola and I arrived, we were amazed with the excellent service we received at the airport. Some people had told us that we needed to be alert in the airport and when we took the transportation to the hotel. It was way better than I expected. The service and hospitality of the people was incredible, and they all worked very organized, so the process could be faster. There was a taxi driver waiting for us with an ID of the company we bought the service. On our way to the hotel Paola and I started to compare the airport and arrival process with the one in Puerto Rico and we were amazed at the quality service in Punta Cana. Everyone that has been in Puerto Rico knows the struggle and bad organization we have in the airport. I was so impressed to see how beautiful the streets and avenues on our way to Bavaro Princess Hotel were. The amount of enormous and beautiful hotels was just ridiculous. As soon as we arrived at the hotel, we were received by the staff with cocktails and snacks. We started talking with the front desk staff and they instantly made a bond with us as we started to mention Puerto Rico.
Can you describe a moment where you found the other side of beauty in Punta Cana? What were your feelings about it?
Definitely. It was during our third day in Punta Cana. We went on a journey in the “Adventure Boogies” that everyone talks about, but we saw a heartbreaking side in this tourism. In this attraction we followed the path that our adventure guide directed to us. While driving the boogie, we entered some paths where they gave us a tour. We visited a beautiful waterfall, cave, a souvenir shop and a beach were some locals were throwing pictures, so we could buy them later. The most heartbreaking sight was driving the boogie next to many houses without floors, windows or doors. The ceilings were covered with zinc plates and you could see many kids giving out flowers to tourists, so they could receive money. Later we arrived at Macao Beach, and another bunch of kids came with bottles or containers full of water to remove the sand off our feet and receive a tip. As soon as Paola and I saw this we felt horrible. We gave 2 kids that came to us with water and flowers $2.00 and they were so excited that it brought tears to our eyes. We also visited a souvenir shop were an old man gave in his house gave us a tour of how they make and grind coffee. I started to talk with the old man and he told us that the Adventure Boogies company gives him a small amount of money, so they can enter the souvenir shop and sell his products. He also gives part of the money he earns to the company.  Although his house isn’t in good conditions, he prefers to live with the little money he gets, because at least he can eat and help his family. We felt so bad because we were just having fun as tourists and the local people in Punta Cana were living in horrible conditions. One of the things that impacted me was that this company makes tours everyday and they literally expose the bad conditions and poverty in which these people live but they don’t do nothing. We have fun and pass by their little houses and they just try to survive with a tip that their kids can earn by working near the tourists.
Is there another experience you recall about Punta Cana where you found out a dark side of this beautiful place?
I remember that Bavaro Princess Hotel had like 9 restaurants, but we usually went to the international buffet because we could eat different styles of food. We sat at the same area of the restaurant and made friends with the waiters that attended us during that week. I remember one of our favorite waiters, Gloria, because she always brought us the things we liked to eat for dessert and we didn’t even have to ask her. We had small conversations while she attended us, and she told us how she had to travel approximately 5 hours each weekend to visit her family. During the week she had to stay in the hotel because they worked very hard and had to wake up early at 3 am. When we asked her some more details, she described how she liked her work because she interacted with many tourists that were very kind to her, but the working conditions were just painful. They had to wake up at 3 am and stay up all day walking and serving tables with a smile on her face. She told us how she needed to sacrifice for her family even though sometimes her back and feet were aching, and every time she brought money to her house, she contributed to her mother’s health treatments and medicines. We also talked with one of the guys of the animation crew, which they called “Justin Bieber”. Justin is completely opposite to the famous Justin Bieber and that’s what bring the tourists’ attention to him. This animation crew was just amazing, and we wondered how they could cover all the activities that the resort did at different hours. As we talked to him, Justin told how they barely slept, and that he had to share the room with 5 other staff members. They don’t have privacy or free time to wander around and have fun. They just rest a few hours and must wake up to rehearse for the activities and animate the tourists.
What are your thoughts about these things you found?
I knew that these people worked very hard to help their families but one of the things that impressed me was how they could work so happy and efficient, having such difficult work conditions and their own personal problems. Also, they don’t earn much for the hard work they do, so they basically live thanks to the tips they receive from us. I think that we need to consider all these things when we travel and if we can compensate the staff, we should do it. Also, I like to call this “dark tourism”, because we go to these places to have a nice time and the staff members in Punta Cana are just crazy to fulfill our needs, so they can earn some money and contribute economically to their families. It’s like we’re indifferent to the things that happen in these places. We think that we’re contributing to their economy, but we’re just increasing this dark tourism were the state doesn’t care for their residents.
As I finished with the interview, Josué told me how he keeps communication with their waiter, Gloria, and the guy in the animation crew. They shared numbers and during the year he always ask them how they’re doing. Both are still working at Bavaro Princess Hotel, and Josué told me how he plans in returning to Punta Cana one of these years.

Beaches and Water Sports in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Tumblr media
What the heck is there to do when you are on a Caribbean island and basically surrounded by beaches? If you're a perfectly rational human being, then the best answer would be to throw off those shoes and choose crazy in the water. In San Juan, Puerto Delicioso, there's so much room for beach adventures. For one, the exact tropical climate is on your side. The average annual temperature can be 82 F (28 C) and it almost never goes underneath 64 F or above 97 F. With a superb weather, it's almost impossible not to enjoy San Juan's distinct waters and white sand. Isla Verde is the premier beach front destination in San Juan. Stretching for miles along side city coastline, Isla Verde Beach lies in front of the many luxury hotels, condominiums, restaurants, clubs, guesthouses, upscale apartment rentals, parks, and even a cemetery. Although you can still read through or take a nap here, this beach is not your excellent location if you're looking for a tranquil and deserted getaway. There may be not much crowd on weekdays but people come in legions during the weekends and Isla Verde becomes a hub associated with water activities. The surf is good enough for body system surfing or you can venture further into the sea with windsurfing, jetskiing, and water skiing. Nearby sports shops offer machines for rent. Beachfront hotels and resorts in Isla Galante also feature various facilities for water sports. Fishing is another favorite water sport in San Juan. Most anglers at this point practice the catch-and-release system though so the farthest you can aquire for a souvenir catch is a picture of the fish. The same style here is deep sea fishing. The most abundant race in these parts of the Caribbean are allison tuna, sailfish, wahoo, and mackerel. Thanks to the island's tropical local climate, fishing is good all year you have more chances of catching estudiantina, dolphin, wahoo, sailfish and other species during the months regarding October to early March.

San Juan has a lot involving marine charters that offer a half-day or full daytime fishing trip. Boats often range from 32-50 feet which enable it to take in about six passengers along with two to three fishing crew. Deep water is close to shore so its possible to usually start fishing within half an hour of leaving town. A half-day tour package can cost $480-$500, a six-hour trip ranges from $650-$700, and a whole day of sportfishing costs anywhere from $850 to $1, 000. These prices are already inclusive of fishing equipment, beverages, and services connected with captain and mate. For those who would rather stay out of deep marine environments but still want a great fishing experience, light tackle doing some fishing in the bays and lagoons is a good alternative. There are boat charters as well that offer smaller boats, around 16-18 ft ., for a half-day or full day trip. Scuba diving and knee boarding are must-do activities as well in Puerto Rico. The exact visibility is at least 60 to 75 feet around areas nearer to the beach but it can be up to 95 feet offshore. Diving sites in San Juan aspect awe-inspiring marine diversity and picturesque geographical formations. Many other impressive dive sites are 50 miles west with Mayaguez, near Desecheo Island off Rincon, off Merluza Island, and off Culebra and Vieques. There's no factor to panic even if you're a newbie in fishing. Some hotels and resorts offer diving lessons education. As for snorkeling, the shallow reefs in San Juan are more than enough to dazzle you with stunning underwater scenery. A good snorkeling location is in the bay costa near the Caribe Hilton hotel.
