2019 Women’s World Cup Final Preview
The 2019 Women’s World Cup is coming to an end with the final set between the United States and the Netherlands this Sunday, July 7th at 11 a.m. EST in Lyon, France. This will be an in-depth preview of both teams in the final, with a prediction for who will be lifting the trophy at the end of the eighth instalment of the competition.
United States
How They Got Here
The United States topped Group F, ahead of Sweden, Chile and Thailand. They also had the best goal-differential at plus-18, scoring 18 goals and conceding none. This should not be surprising since the Americans were the favorite to win their fourth and repeat as World Cup Champions. The United States is spoiled for riches in attack and having won the 2015 World Cup, many of the players are well-experienced on how to win the competition.
In the round of 16 the United States beat Spain 2-1, thanks to two penalties from Megan Rapinoe. Next in the quarterfinals the United States beat the hosts France by the same score of 2-1. Megan Rapinoe once again scored both the American goals, with the first coming in the fifth minute and the second in the 65th. The United States did concede a goal in the 81st minute, leading to a nervy last 10 minutes against France, but the Americans held on. In their most recent match against england in the semifinals, the United States won once again 2-1. However, the United States was pushed in what was their most competitive match of the tournament so far. England had a tying goal ruled off after a video review, and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher saved a penalty in the 84th minute to keep the United State’s lead intact.
Key Players
Megan Rapinoe (winger): Rapinoe has been the United State’s player of the tournament. She has four of the six goals that the United States has scored in the knockout stage, and if it were not for a hamstring injury, would have started against England in the semifinals. Christen Press was a serviceable backup in that match, she even scored the opening goal, but Rapinoe is that much better. Rapinoe takes most of the United State’s free-kicks and is an excellent supplier to the team’s other forwards. Along with having an eye for goal, Rapinoe is fantastic with the ball at her feet, and has her head up to try and set up her teammates. It is still unknown if Rapinoe will be able to play in the final, but if she does then the United States will have their best attacking player back.
Alex Morgan (striker): This will be the biggest international game of Morgan’s career, since she captains the team, and also because Abby Wambach is no longer playing.Morgan has scored six goals this World Cup, which leads the team, and is also joint-most in the tournament. Granted five of those goals came against Thailand in the opening match, but Morgan scored the winning goal against England in the last game. Morgan can score with either feet and is great in the air. She makes intelligent runs in between opposing centerbacks and is constantly trying to find open space. Along with her ruthlessness in front of goal, Morgan also does not mind assisting so her teammates can score.
Rose Lavelle (central-midfielder): Lavelle was the best player on the field for the United States in the semifinal match against England. Unfortunately she was unable to play the entire match as she was substituted off in the 65th minute because of a hamstring injury. But for the 65 minutes that Lavalle was on the field she was a constant threat going forward. Lavelle is an excellent dribble and an ever-willing runner. She uses those attributes to run in behind and constantly pressure the opposing defense. Lavelle should be healthy for the final against the Netherlands which is great news for the United States. If she is able to replicate her performance against England in the final, then the United States should have no problem winning their fourth World Cup title.
Weakness: Central-Defense Positioning
This might be a nitpick, but if there is one area that the Netherlands should exploit, it is the space in between the United State’s centerbacks Becky Sauerbrunn and Abby Dahlkemper. Sauerbrunn and Dahlkemper are excellent passers, but there is often too wide of a gap between them. England’s striker Ellen White constantly exploited the space between both centerbacks. White managed to score one goal and would have had another if she was not marginally offside in the 67th minute. And that offside was only spotted after a video review. Even on the penalty that Sauerbrunn conceded in the 84th minute, there was too much space between the centerbacks.
Netherlands
How They Got Here
The Netherlands were the first-place team from Group E with nine points, beating Canada, Cameroon and New Zealand. However, each of their group games could have gone the other way. They just barely beat New Zealand 1-0 in their opening match, and allowed Cameroon and Canada to tie the score at one before winning in their next two matches.
This nervey play continued in their round of 16 match against Japan. In fact the Dutch were lucky to win that match. Japan had multiple shots come off the woodwork and were it not for a late penalty by Lieke Martens, the Netherlands could have easily lost that game. Then the Netherlands followed that match with their best display of the tournament. They dominated Italy in the quarterfinals, scoring two and conceding none. In the semifinals, the Netherlands waited until the 99th minute when Jackie Groenen scored the long-range winning goal.
Key Players
Vivianne Miedema (striker): The leading goalscorer for the Netherlands with three, Miedema is the spearhead for the Dutch attack. The 22-year-old combines excellent movement with deadly finishing. She is not afraid to take shots from outside the box, or to dribble at defenders. And with fellow forwards Shanice van de Sanden and Martens’ inconsistent play, Midema has been the Netherland’s best attacker. Miedema will be a handful for the American defenders the entire game and will try to replicate what made England’s striker Ellan White so effective in her semifinal appearance against the United States.
Danielle van de Donk (central-midfielder): The Dutch no. 10, van de Donk is the more attacking-minded of the three central-midfielders. She has more a license to get forward and join the three forwards. She is an excellent passer and makes late runs into the box to attack crosses. Van de Donk is the first player that the Dutch look for when they are starting an attack. Her most effective weapon is her ability to switch the ball with a long pass across the fisl to the wingers on either side. The United States will struggle to stop the Netherlands attack if they cannot stop van de Donk. She might not score all the goals, but she is possibly the most important piece in the Dutch attack.
Sherida Spitse (central-midfielder): Spitse is a combative, box-to-box midfielder for the Netherlands. She has no problem diving into a tackle and taking a yellow card for the team, but that is not the only facet to her game. Spitse has a deadly delivery from set pieces and can even score from one if the chance presents itself. In their quarterfinal match against Italy, is was Spitse’s delivery from two free kicks that set up both the Dutch goals. Spitse will have to match the quality of whoever the United States has in midfield if the Netherlands wants to win.
Weakness: Attacking Consistency
Going into the tournament the Netherlands had one of the best attacks in the world. However, they have been inconsistent all tournament. There have been glimpses of brilliance, like against Italy, but there have been equal amounts of frustration, like against Japan and New Zealand. The final ball for the netherlands must be better. All tournament long they have been able to get into good positions, but the final pass has been poor. Aside from Miedema, van de Sanden and Martens (the two other forwards in the Netherlands attacking trio), have only scored two goals between them. Van de Sanden has been so poor at points this tournament, that she was replaced by Lineth Beerensteyn in the semifinal against Sweden. Van de Donk has been excellent from midfield, but the Netherlands need their front three to perform against the United States. Especially since the Americans have shown some weakness in defense.
Prediction: United States 3-1 Netherlands
This game could be a shootout. The United States has not kept a clean sheet in the knockout stage, and the Netherlands defense has allowed teams back in the game all tournament. Of the two teams, the United States has more tools to survive a goal-fest. Couple that with the inconsistency of the Dutch attack, the United States should be lifting the trophy in back-to-back tournaments and the fourth time in the nations history.

Memorial Tournament Is ‘The Ultimate PGA Tour Event,’ Says CBS Sports’ Frank Nobilo – CBS Boston
(CBS Pittsburgh) — The PGA Tour returns to Muirfield Village for the next event of the resumed season. This week is the Memorial Tournament, among the season’s more popular events. Rescheduled from early June, it replaces the Open Championship on the calendar.
The Memorial is a worthy substitute for the canceled fourth major. It’s the event Tour legend Jack Nicklaus started on the course he designed, with the hope it would one day be as exceptional as the Masters.
“Jack Nicklaus prides himself on getting as close to perfect as possible, condition-wise, practice facility-wise, attending to the players,” says CBS Sports golf analyst Frank Nobilo. “In some respects, he modeled this golf course after Augusta National from a point of view of convenience and excellence. So you put it all together in one pot, and you have really the ultimate PGA Tour event.”
>>STREAM: Memorial Tournament
The 45th annual Memorial certainly promises to be exceptional this year. And expectations heightened a bit after an epic finish at the Workday Charity Open. Collin Morikawa bested Justin Thomas in a three-hole playoff for his second Tour win. Many contenders return this week as part of the Memorial’s strongest field in recent memory. Tiger Woods will be among them.
The Memorial generally attracts one of the best fields for a non-major. However, a three-month shutdown has changed the calculation somewhat, as more players take the opportunity to compete while they can. The first three post-hiatus events all boasted major-caliber fields overflowing with world-class talent. Even the one-off Workday was a nice surprise.
The Memorial field, expanded from 120 to 133 players, projects to be the best so far. Nine of the world’s top-10 players, and 17 of the top 20, have committed. Of the missing three, Tyrrell Hatton (15th) is the only one to have competed since the Tour’s return. Adam Scott (9th) and Tommy Fleetwood (12th) remain in Australia and England respectively, unwilling to commit to long stays in the U.S.
World number one Rory McIlroy returns from a week off to a course where he’s had some success, with four top-10 finishes in eight appearances. His game the last month has seemed a bit rusty, however. “It’s time that Rory McIlroy stepped it up,” says Nobilo. “The good thing about Muirfield Village is it’s a big golf course. So it’s a golf course that you should see Rory McIlroy play well.”
Bryson DeChambeau (7th), the world’s best player over the last month, will join McIlroy after a week off as well. “Bryson’s become a long, straight driver the golf ball,” notes Nobilo. “What he did a couple of weeks ago in Detroit was just mind-blowing… He became the first player ever to average over 350 yards off the tee with a driver. I never thought I would see that in my day. So that works on any golf course.”

Thomas (3rd) will look to shake off a stinging loss at the Workday that could’ve been a win had he not bogeyed two of the final three holes. Defending Memorial champion Patrick Cantlay (10th) and Workday champion Morikawa (13th), both of whom shot 19-under in their respective wins, will also tee it up.
The biggest story, of course, is the return of Tiger Woods (14th). As anticipated, Woods will play his first Tour event since February. (He also teamed up with Peyton Manning against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in The Match: Champions for Charity in May.) He has won the Memorial five times in his career, most recently in 2012. On one hand, this will be the best competition he’s faced at Muirfield Village. On the other hand, rest and health (of which he has both) are key to his competitiveness at this point in his career.
“A win is such a lofty expectation though,” says Nobilo. “He hasn’t won this since 2012. And I know, Ohio has been a great hunting ground for him, because he won eight events at Firestone and five at Muirfield Village. But his last win in Ohio was seven years ago. So, just to see him compete, I think we should be thankful. To see him contend, that would be icing on the cake.”
Muirfield Village will endure its second tournament in as many weeks. The expanded 7,456-yard par-72 track will be adjusted for the Memorial, both to challenge players and protect the course from wear and tear. Look for relocated tee boxes and pins to go along with higher rough and faster greens. “The biggest change will be, providing the weather holds out, a firmer, faster, tougher golf course,” says Nobilo.
The green speeds, which measured about 11.5 on the stimpmeter last week, will be closer to 13 this week. That introduces a little more caution into the equation. “All of a sudden the strategy changes,” says Nobilo.

Predicting winners is a tall order in any PGA Tour event, let alone one with such a stacked field. Here are the favorites:
Bryson DeChambeau (9-1)
DeChambeau, with his added power, finally gets a crack at a longer golf course. He has finished in the top 10 in each of his post-hiatus events, including a win two weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. His additional length will afford him some additional scoring opportunities at Muirfield Village, where he won the Memorial in 2018.
Justin Thomas (11-1)
Thomas narrowly missed a win at Muirfield Village last week. Instead he added his third top-10 finish since the return. It was also his third top-10 finish on the course; he was fourth and eighth at the Memorial in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Thomas, an experienced pro, should be able to compartmentalize the recent disappointing loss and contend once again.
Rory McIlroy (12-1)
McIlroy maintains his top ranking, but hasn’t looked the part in his three recent events. His best post-return finish is an 11th place tie at the Travelers Championship. Muirfield Village, being a longer course where he’s notched four top-10 finishes, should allow him to open things up a bit.

Cage Match: John Klingberg vs. Tyson Barrie
While it was no surprise to see John Klingberg finish among the top five among defensemen in points per game for 2017-18, few poolies would’ve envisioned Tyson Barrie landing at the #2 spot. Have we already seen the best from Klingberg, and what should we expect from Barrie in 2018-19 and beyond? Those questions and more will be settled in this week’s Cage Match, which starts now!
Career Path and Contract Status
Klingberg, who turns 26 in August, was drafted 131st overall in 2010 and earmarked for the minors upon arriving stateside for 2014-15. But when he emerged with 12 points in his first ten AHL contests, that earned him an immediate ticket to Dallas. There he continued his offensive outburst with 40 points in only 65 contests. His upward trajectory continued with 58 points in 2015-16, igniting talk among poolies of him being Erik Karlsson 2.0. Yet then last season he stumbled to “only” 49 points in 80 games before righting his ship big time this season with 67 points, although he did only finish with 19 points in his final 33 games after starting with 48 in his first 49 contests.
Barrie, who turns 27 in July, was also a draft bargain, selected 64th overall in 2009. The AHL likewise proved no match for Barrie, who posted 61 points in 87 games there, leading to him spending the bulk of 2013-14 with Colorado, where he posted 38 points in 64 games. Much like Klingberg, Barrie scoffed at the notion of a sophomore slump, what with 53 points in 80 games for the Avs in 2014-15. From there, however, Barrie saw his totals drop in his next two seasons, first to 49 points and then to only 38 in 2016-17. This season, however, Colorado’s resurgence as a team may have paled in comparison to Barrie’s in fantasy, as he racked up an amazing 57 points in only 68 games and, unlike Klingberg, finished strong with 27 points in 29 games after returning from injury.
Klingberg’s $4.25M cap hit through 2021-22 is among the best bargains in the NHL. Barrie makes about 25% more per season at $5.5M, and will be a UFA after the 2019-20 campaign.

Barrie’s 3:44 per game with the man advantage was tops among all NHL rearguards this past season, with Klingberg’s 3:39 not too far behind. But this is where numbers can be a bit deceiving, as it was Klingberg who was arguably more the unquestioned #1 d-man on the PP for his team.
Why? Because while Barrie saw 90 seconds more power-play time than any other Avs d-man, Klingberg bested the #2 Stars d-man by 2:04! For perspective, only Brent Burns and John Carlson had a larger average power-play time per game gap between themselves and any 60+ game d-man on their team, and they happened to be the only rearguards in the league to equal (Burns) or surpass (Carlson) Klingberg’s 67 points this past season. In contrast, four other d-men (Rasmus Ristolainen, Nick Leddy, Shayne Gostisbehere, Victor Hedman) had between 90 and 120 seconds more average power-play time per game than the next highest 60+ game d-man on their team, and Leddy and Ristolainen failed to best 42 points. Coincidence? Maybe; or maybe not. Either way, Barrie and Klingberg are top power-play dogs, although both play for a team which has at least one top 10 defenseman prospect who could put a damper on their power-play time.
One other thing to consider is Klingberg’s scoring dropped down the stretch, whereas Barrie’s rose despite returning from an injury hiatus. Could it be Klingberg’s career high in ice time, of which more than a minute was shorthanded duty after never averaging more than 13 seconds per game on the PK, took a toll on him as the campaign wore on? It’s difficult to know for sure, and it might be a moot issue with Ken Hitchcock not returning as coach in 2018-19; however, one thing we know is Barrie shouldn’t have to contend with overuse or shorthanded duty based on what we saw this season, so the risk of him hitting a similar wall seemingly is not there, which might give him an overall edge in this area.
Klingberg also is in limited company as one of four d-men since 1990-91 to have played in 135+ games while averaging 0.65+ point per game in his first two seasons. The only issue is the other three were Vladimir Malakhov, Marek Zidlicky, and Ryan Whitney, none of whom turned out to be perennial fantasy studs. Could Klingberg be a star that burns bright early, then fizzles like these three? For what it’s worth he now sits at 214 points in 303 career NHL games, for a 0.70 point per game rate well higher than any of those three at such a stage, so perhaps he’s already done enough to push aside this comparison.

Barrie’s 30+ PPPts in under 70 games marks the first time that’s occurred for a rearguard since 2009-10, and only seven other d-men have done so since 2000-01. Digging deeper, five of them, like Barrie, averaged 0.80+ points per game in their under 70-game season, with all but one scoring 67+ in at least two other campaigns. Not a predictive stat, but interesting – and encouraging – food for thought.
Still though, Barrie’s 2017-18 PPPt rate appears to be unsustainable on paper. Yet to a certain degree it was due to the Avs as a team finally seeing some PP success. After all, their power-play conversion percentage had been 15%, 18% and 16% in the previous three seasons, and was 21.9% for this past season. Thus, although 0.44 PPPts per game is quite high and unlikely to be repeated, between Barrie having a PPPt rate above one every four games even when the Avs were struggling, plus his clear role as top PP dog, he might only drop to one PPPts every three or so games, which is still quite solid.
Both won’t win you your PIM, Hits, or Blocks categories but also won’t hurt you. In terms of SOG, Barrie has had a clear upward trajectory, perhaps lending more legitimacy – and, therefore, sustainability – to his numbers as compared to Klingberg, who’s been more up and down in this area, plus PPPts. The good news for Klingberg is he doesn’t appear maxed out in either category; however, with four seasons under his belt one would think he’d have seen bigger jumps by now if those jumps were indeed coming, or at least more year-to-year consistency.

There’s a lot to like here for both. Barrie’s IPP has been 50%+ in each of these four seasons, through Colorado’s ups and downs. That consistency shows he has a nose for scoring and is a driver of offense. Beyond that, Barrie’s OZ% rose to 61.4% this past season. I know what you’re thinking – isn’t that a bad thing, since it realistically can’t go much higher? While indeed the chances of it increasing are unlikely, the fact that he succeeded while it was this high, plus the Avs having d-men who can occupy other roles, means it probably won’t go down either. Add to this a somewhat high but still not unreasonable 5×5 team shooting percentage for 2017-18 and Barrie should be able to post 60 points next season if what we saw in Colorado is repeated, with a better chance of rising to 65 points than falling below 55.
For Klingberg, the jump in IPP could either be an unsustainable spike, or a sign that in his magical fourth year he became more dialed into the offense. The fact that it coincided with him shooting more than he ever has suggests, to me, legitimacy, and in turn that his IPP in future seasons could also be above the 50% mark. What’s more, Klingberg had his best season despite his second worst 5×5 team shooting percentage; and although his OZ% was a career high it was in line with previous campaigns and could go up organically now that Ken Hitchcock is no longer at the helm.
Both players get their fair share of secondary assists; however, I think there’s no reason for concern there. For one, they’ve kept things pretty consistent, plus a lot of this comes from each of them being the lone d-man on the power play, where their point shot will often lead indirectly to a goal, as opposed to other d-men who might get a lower secondary assists rate but, at the same time, a lower scoring rate as well.
Who Wins?
Pop quiz – how many more points does Klingberg have than Barrie over the past four seasons? Would you believe only 17 (214 vs. 197)? And that was in not only three more games played than Barrie (303 vs. 300) but also while playing for a team which scored 975 goals in those four seasons (fourth most in the NHL) versus 841 goals for the Avalanche (sixth worst in the NHL over that span). Long story short, Klingberg’s production – despite what might poolies might be immediately inclined to think – has been barely higher than Barrie’s, and at least part of the explanation lies in the far greater offensive success of his team as a whole.
And from the data, my take is chances are both players will score within five points of each other in 2018-19 and likely going forward. As such, the winner in one year leagues comes down to cost vs. value; and given his more high profile past success and finishing tied for second in d-man scoring in 2017-18, I’d venture Klingberg will have a good bit higher cost than Barrie, who, although he had a higher points per game rate than Klingberg, didn’t put up as many pure points and might be less trusted by poolies due to concerns about regression from the Avs or Barrie’s scoring having dropped in two straight seasons prior to 2017-18. Therefore, in non-cap one year leagues I might give a narrow win to Barrie; however, I see no reason to think either of these two is in danger of seeing his total drop below 60 in 2018-19, so grab one or both if you can get him/them at that price.
In keepers though, with Colorado’s prospect talent at D, and Barrie being a UFA after the 2019-20 season, he could well find himself on a new team by then. And although that team will likely pay him enough to ensure he retains his coveted PP minutes, they might also want him to be a more complete defensemen, which could hurt him from a fantasy perspective. Klingberg, on the other hand, is signed for longer and although he too has a prospect D in Julius Honka to contend with, his “spot” on Dallas is likely safer, and, if anything, might stand to approve with Hitchcock no longer the coach. Overall, this might make Klingberg the safer/better choice in keepers.
