Lejar Episode 4 // Dinda

Bruk!

"Aw!"

NOOOOOOOT

Supir bis menekan klakson dalam-dalam. Aku yang masih sedikit pusing mengintip ke depan sambil mengusap-usap dahiku. Supir bis itu sedang merutuk supir angkot yang berhenti tiba-tiba dan membuat bis berhenti mendadak. Aku yang sedang tidur ayam tentu saja tak dapat menahan kepala dan badanku dari menubruk kursi di depanku.

Tidur di bis biasanya dapat menyegarkanku sebelum pulang ke rumah. Namun, beberapa hari terakhir aku merasa begitu lelah. Tetapi bukannya segar, aku malah merasa makin terkuras. Bis sudah melaju kembali dan aku baru saja melewati toko donat favoritku pertanda halte pemberhentianku sudah dekat. Aku segera bersiap-siap untuk turun.

Aku pun tiba di halte 5 menit kemudian. Dari halte ini, aku masih harus berjalan selama 10 sampai 15 menit tergantung kecepatan jalanku. Kalau sedang kebelet untuk buang air besar bisa 8 menit, tapi untuk sekarang mungkin aku sudah kehabisan tenaga untuk berjalan cepat. Aku memeriksa handphoneku untuk melihat jam dan pemberitahuan.

Aku menutup handphoneku dan menaruhnya kembali ke dalam tasku. Aku memijit pelan kedua sisi dahiku. Bukan karena sakit karena benturan di bis tadi, tapi karena pusing dengan pesan dari Hana dan Bapak. Aku harus bersiap-siap mungkin sampai rumah akan mendengar wejangan seputar PNS kembali dari Bapak yang akan disampaikan melalui Ibu. Untuk pesan dari Hana, memang beberapa hari yang lalu, kita membahas beasiswa S2 ke New Zealand yang merupakan mimpiku sejak kuliah. Akan tetapi, aku sekarang malah bekerja di perusahaan yang tidak sesuai dengan kemampuanku.

Aku perlambat langkahku karena jujur aku belum siap untuk masuk ke rumah. Ragaku lelah dan pikiranku lejar. Aku tak siap bertemu Bapak yang kerap memaksaku dengan keinginannya. Aku tidak siap bertemu Ibu yang sudah bulak-balik bertanya seputar menimang cucu. Mungkin Alif satu-satunya yang ingin kutemui di rumah karena aku sudah menyiapkan sesuatu untuk adikku. Astaga! Aku jadi teringat sesuatu. Alif baru saja mengirimkan CV ta'aruf dari salah satu seniornya. Aku belum sempat membukanya.

Kalau boleh jujur, aku masih belum ingin menikah. Aku masih berkutat dengan pikiran "Apakah ini saat yang tepat bagiku untuk menikah?" secara umur memang aku baru masuk kepala tiga tahun ini. Tapi aku masih merasa perlu menyelesaikan segala keruwetan yang sedang aku alami akhir-akhir ini. Aku tak mau masuk ke jenjang pernikahan dengan membawa masalah yang belum kuselesaikan. Alif sebenarnya mencoba membantu karena ia merasa kasihan denganku yang selalu di tanyai perihal pernikahan oleh Ibu.

"Bagaimana aku harus melangkah ke fase hidup yang baru bila aku pun masih ragu jalan yang mana yang harus kupilih?" ucapku dalam hati.

Tanpa sadar aku sudah berada di depan pagar rumahku. Aku menarik nafas dalam-dalam dan menghembuskannya perlahan. Aku harus terlihat biasa saja saat memasuki pagar rumahku.

Aku disambut oleh Bapa dengan hal yang sudah bisa kutebak. Aku langsung buru-buru saja masuk ke dalam rumah. Aku mencoba menghindari Ibu, jadi aku langsung pergi ke kamar Alif namun belum sampai pintu kamar Alif, Ibu memanggilku.

"Din, nanti kalau udah beres dari kamar Alif, kesini dulu yah sebentar Ibu mau ngobrol." pinta Ibu.

"Oke bu." sebenarnya aku enggan. Tapi aku tak bisa menghindar bila ibu meminta langsung seperti itu.

Aku masuk kamar Alif dengan pikiran yang tak karuan. Alif sepertinya sadar kalau sedang lelah, aku pun mencoba untuk menutupinya.

"Jangan tanya soal ta'aruf. Jangan tanya soal ta'aruf" aku terus memikirkan hal tersebut hingga akhirnya pertanyaan tentang ini keluar dari mulut Alif .

"Eh kak aku lupa nanya, gimana CV ta'aruf Kak Adi kemarin.udah dilihat belum kak?" DUARRR. Aku seperti disambar petir. Aku terpaksa berbohong telah melihat CV-nya dan meminta waktu untuk berpikir terlebih dahulu. Padahal aku tidak mau. Namun aku tidak enak bila harus menolak mentah-mentah permintaan dari Alif. Aku segera mengalihkan topik ke hadiah yang telah aku siapkan. Beberapa bulan yang lalu Alif bercerita ingin mengikut kelas desain namun harganya cukup mahal. Jadi aku memberikan separuh dari tabunganku untuknya karena aku tak mau Alif berada di posisiku sekarang. Hilang arah dan lalu diarahkan ke arah yang tidak aku inginkan.

Alif terlihat sangat senang. Aku dipeluknya dengan erat. Aku pun segera pergi menemui Ibu agar semua ini segera selesai untuk hari ini dan aku bisa beristirahat. Aku sudah menyiapkan kupingku untuk menerima ceramah ibu tentang bekerja sebagai PNS seperti Bapak ataupun umurku yang sudah kelewat tua menurutnya untuk menikah.

"Iya jadi gini, Din. Kamu kan tahu, tabungan bapak makin tipis. Daripada habis, jadi Ibu ada rencana mau bikin toko grosir. Untuk tempat nya sudah ada. Cuma yaa.. Kayaknya masih kurang untuk modalnya. Dinda masih ada uang kan di tabungan?" aku terkejut. Ibu belum pernah membahas ini sebelumnya. Aku sebenarnya ingin membantu tapi uangku sudah kupakai. Aku pun menjelaskan seadanya tanpa menyebut nama Alif.

"Dinda pake untuk apa sampai sedikit lagi tabungannya? Mau kamu pake liburan lagi yah?" tuduh Ibu padaku.

Aku terheran dan tak bisa berkata-kata. Aku memberikan uangku dengan ikhlas untuk kebaikan Alif namun ibu menuduhku yang tidak-tidak. Aku benar-benar tak habis pikir dengan pikiran Ibu. Kepalaku mulai berdenyut pusing

"Sudahlah Din, tabung saja uangnya, bisa kamu pake bantu Ibu sama Bapa atau bisa kamu pake untuk tambah-tambah kamu nikah. Umur kamu lho udah ga muda lagi nak." Ibu menambahi.

Here we go again. Ibu kembali memainkan kartu favoritnya. Intensitas pusing di kepalaku semakin terasa. Mataku mulai memanas. Air mataku bahkan sudah hampir keluar. Aku sudah tidak tahan dengan keadaan ini. Aku seperti ingin meledak dan mengeluarkan semuanya didepan ibu. Ingin rasanya kuluapkan bahwa jiwa dan ragaku sudah bekerja keras dan sangat lelah hanya untuk menjalani kehidupan yang jauh dari mimpiku dan apa jadinya bila Ibu dan Bapak kerap mencecarku dengan hal yang belum atau bahkan tidak ingin aku kejar?!

Aku segera berdiri dan meminta izin untuk mandi terlebih dahulu sebelum emosiku tak terkontrol. Baru dua langkah aku berjalan, tembok ruangan serasa berputar di sekitarku. Aku mencoba meraih apa pun sebagai pegangan. Belum sempat kutemukan pegangannya, aku merasa seperti terjatuh dan tidak punya tenaga untuk menahan tubuhku. Lalu seketika semuanya gelap.

Conspicuous Media Consumption, 2020

it’s that time of year again! *saddest toot from the party horn*

for those of you just joining us: it’s a “consume a different content every week for 48 weeks of the year” challenge. for a longer explanation, check out last year’s write-up here, and as always, feel free to pop in and ask questions about any and all of this content.

(same disclaimer as last year too: content for this project ONLY here, and not certain...*looks at my billion Sad Cop Lady posts*...hyperfixations.)

(man remember when i was big into X-Men comics earlier this year? better times than these, if only because no one's discoursing about Emma Frost’s woobie/war criminal ratio anymore--her w/w, if you will)

(...i swear at one point i didn’t exclusively like platinum blondes but alas)

Bitter Root (comic, 1 issue finished 1/1/2020): still very cool on a basic concept level, but runs into the Image Comics problem of just not having enough content to keep my interest beyond that. part of that is on me, for picking it up again BEFORE the second arc rolled out, but the first five issues didn’t really follow (or resolve) any cohesive story either, so...meh.

Immortal Hulk (comic, 3 trades finished 1/17/2020): still not gonna be something i care deeply about (maybe one of Bruce’s Hulksonas dyed his hair???), but i do want to give kudos to Al Ewing for sheer consistency in terms of sustaining this level of quality storytelling month by month for more than two years now. working with the dense archive of the Hulk mythos and managing to make it interesting and thoughtful is impressive even if i personally would not expend the same effort.

Disco Elysium (game, finished 1/18/2020): honestly i should have twigged onto what this year was gonna be like when the third thing i drew from the barrel was pure uncut Eastern European flavored depression. i faintly recall people ragging on it for being pretentiously cynical, but i actually thought its core slid more towards idealism than people give it credit for. also gratified that i haven’t heard anything about Robert Kurvitz using slave labor to finish it, which is a thing we have to say about our video games now!!! fun.

Watchmen (TV, 7 episodes finished 1/27/2020): i am a fool who wants to believe in Damon Lindelof and I WAS RIGHT!!! honestly still cannot believe that he pulled off this highwire act with such deft aplomb. might be my favorite TV this year, which is a pretty high bar given how much TV i ended up watching.

On a Sunbeam (comic, finished 2/1/2020): Tillie Walden rightly deserves all the praise for inventive queer storytelling, but i will say that on reread--since i first read this as a webcomic--there ARE some issues with pacing here that clearly come from the foibles of its original intended medium. still just excellent, even if after some plot significant haircuts i was having trouble telling a few folks apart.

Lazarus (comic, 1 trade finished 2/8/2020): it’s so good and i want moooooorrrreee--though obviously Rucka and Lark have the right to take all the time they need. the newer longer issues work really well with the epic prestige drama vibes of the story! i’m into it.

The Good Place (TV, 4 seasons finished 2/18/2020): i’m gonna be super honest: i actually wasn’t a big fan of the finale, nor the last season as a whole. it felt like all of Eleanor’s flaws vanished for a majority of the season, and the Chidi-centric episode where they tried to give a legible justification for why he’s Like This was...i didn’t care for it. still, it’s so good and unique on the WHOLE that we’ll literally never get anything like this ever again, and that counts for a lot.

The Old Republic (game, finished 2/21/2020): it’s an MMO so it will never actually Be Finished so long as the servers aren’t shut down, but i caught up on the content i’d missed in the intervening months. Onslaught thus far has mostly been...kinda bland tbh; going back to Imps vs. Rebs after all the shakeups in the previous expansions feels like a waste.

High Road (album, finished 2/22/2020): someone should tell Kesha not to say that word!! otherwise i was very happy with this album, and happy FOR her even though we don’t know each other. being able to find joy again in the same genre of music you made while you were being horrifically exploited is very cool.

Young Justice (TV, 13 episodes finished 2/28/2020): given how much the middle stuff dragged--STOP KILLING YOUR HIJABI CHARACTER IN HORRIFIC WAYS--i was...actually kinda mad by how the end managed to stick the landing anyway. the day being saved by Vic’s self-acceptance and Violet’s sublime compassion was A+, and even the Brion/Tara switchup was a pleasant surprise, though it relied on me caring about Brion MUCH MORE than i actually did.

Manic (album, finished 2/29/2020): do people still care for/about Halsey? i feel like even That One Song that was on every tumblr gifset ever has kinda faded into obscurity at this point. this album was...okay. i feel like people give Halsey a pass for extremely obvious lyrical turns that they wouldn’t for other folks because of her subject material--which is fine. not really my cup of tea, but i also listened to lots of Relient K this year, so that’s probably a good thing.

Jade Empire (game, 3/10/2020): the only 3D-era Bioware game that didn’t franchise out, and for good fucking reason!!! the Orientalism and appropriation really haven’t aged well, and even beyond that the story was...standard Bioware faire. even my usual “my wife’s a bitch i love her” Bioware type didn’t do it for me, and i just ended up romancing no one. it did make me think a lot about what level of cultural borrowing is accepted nowadays, and why: people still look fondly at Avatar and talk about how ~accurate and respectful it was, for example, despite it being staffed almost entirely by white folks, and the Orientalism ALL OVER the monk class in DND is still fine for some reason.

Alif the Unseen (book, finished 3/31/2020): interesting to have read this AFTER reading The Bird King last year, because it highlights how the intervening years have shifted G. Willow Wilson’s thematic interest and improved her craft. i’m actually quite fond of how her characterization work is rougher here--Alif is extremely flawed to the point of being insufferable, but it makes his development by the end more satisfying. Dina is also just good and i love her

Baldur’s Gate (2 games, finished 5/31/2020): well, having finally finished the series i’m happy to say that it...still doesn’t really do it for me, sorry. any awesome story moments were overshadowed by the EXCRUCIATING inventory management system and the combat (i still don’t know what a THAC0 is and at this point i’m afraid to find out). these games crucially lack the Home Base that later Bioware games were so good about, and that (coupled with the huge cast of characters you can drop off and never see again) really hurts the intimacy for me. by the time we finally did get one it was the Hell Dimension in Throne of Bhaal, and i was just...trying to get through it. (yes, i did just say that about one of the most beloved expansions ever to one of the most beloved games ever.) THIS particular iteration of “my wife’s a bitch i love her” was very good, but the game wouldn’t let me romance her :(

The Underground Railroad (book, finished 6/19/2020): honestly what is there even left to say at this point! it was exactly as good as every critic on the planet said it was, even with my usual aversion to hype. draining and horrifying in turns but still insistent upon a future for Black folks.

Steven Universe (6 seasons and a mooooooviiieeee, finished 7/11/2020): yes, i DID finish the show and almost immediately begin a rewatch. this series is now one of my top five most formative things, and the amount of love and respect i have for it is incalculable. that said: i once again did not love how the central conflict of Future was resolved (just the resolution--i loved the finale just fine). for all of Steven’s breakdown was built up, resolving it with “EVERYONE HUG HIM UNTIL HE CRIES” felt...cheap, especially since up until this point the show had been so good about treating trauma and mental illness with the respect and nuance it deserves. it made me wish some of the earlier, less substantial episodes had been cut so we could spend more time at the end.

What It Is (comic, finished 8/19/2020): y’all i love Lynda Barry SO MUCH. for the longest time i was worried that One Hundred Demons was more a lightning in a bottle situation but every book of hers i pick up makes me feel obscure emotions i didn’t even realize existed. the compassionate way she’s able to describe her child self and how weird and fucked up she was (and still is) is honestly aspirational.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (TV, 5 seasons finished 9/26/2020): so here’s a reversal of what i’ve been complaining about with other shows: i was mostly lukewarm-to-warm about She-Ra, but the later seasons and the finale made me much more into it as a whole. more shows should improve in stakes and overall quality as they age tbh!! i still don’t actively love Catradora (my sole quibble with season 5 actually has to do with the way Adora kept backsliding as a character to make certain Plot/Relationship things happen), but i’m very happy for them nonetheless. i can certainly appreciate a show that will go for High Feeling over tight plot. dark horse standout moments: trees growing everywhere proving that Perfuma Was Right, and Hordak and Adora seeing each other--that weirdly intimate moment of recognition.

Fetch the Bolt Cutters (album, finished 10/7/2020): again i find myself not having much to say that no one else has said. it’s good! once again love it when an artist reclaims something they’d attached with negative affect (anxiety, depression, disordered eating) for better and brighter things.

Solutions and Other Problems (comic, finished 10/25/2020): i was very into Allie Brosh’s ambition with this book, which feels weird to say but i stand by it. it’s cool to see an artist try to make a new medium work for them instead of just sticking to what already works. not all the experimentation was 100% effective, but it was still delightful and occasionally devastating to read, so.

Legend of Zelda (3 games: Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Link Between Worlds, finished 11/1/2020): this was the third time i’d played Ocarina of Time, which made it the nice, comforting groove i settled into before Majora’s Mask blatted me in the face. i’m not usually a completionist Zelda person because...the gameplay in Zelda is bad, do not at me it just is, but i really felt like i HAD to be one for Majora’s Mask since the whole point is to get attached to the banalities of the town. i’m sure nobody’s surprised that i loved it, even if it gave me an existential crisis about how life goes on in the game for NPCs when you’re not there to save them from it, and there’s not enough time to save them all all the time (also not a surprise to anyone: Romani and Cremia gave Personal Feelings). Link Between Worlds...bad. not like in a “this is a bad story by every measurable gauge” way, but i was already struggling with the 2D playstyle shift enough that for the whole story to end with some “yes it’s v sad that Lorule is Like This but trying to steal Hyrule’s privilege is Even Worse Actually” noblesse oblige bullshit left a VERY poor taste in my mouth, this year of all years. i did audibly gasp when Ravio took off his mask, though. i’m currently playing Breath of the Wild in cautious increments; it’s the first time i’ve enjoyed early Zelda gameplay, but if they wanted fully voiced cutscenes i wish they got voice actors who...knew what words sound like.

folklore (album, finished 11/6/2020): my belief that Taylor Swift is Just Fine continues, i’m afraid. i LIKED this album, don’t get me wrong, and respect her constant drive to innovate, but i didn’t love it substantially more or less than any other Taylor Swift album. mostly i’m just tickled by how she thinks leaning into the indie aesthetic means borrowing Vita Sackville-West’s entire wardrobe, though i will admit to feeling Something when she swore in a song. i think it was like. savage vindication?? you go ahead and swear, Taylor Swift. you deserve it.

Shore (album, finished 11/19/2020): do people still care about the Fleet Foxes? i think there was some Drama with Josh Tillman a while back but i don’t remember where the discourse landed with who was being more problematic. it was nostalgic for me to listen to their new album--made me remember being an undergrad who exclusively listened to men who mumbled and played acoustic guitar all over again.

Star Wars (3 movies: original trilogy, finished 11/27/2020): there is So Much bad Star Wars these days that every time i rewatch the original trilogy i’m afraid that they will suddenly be bad, but guess what! they’re not. i love these children and their hot mess stories, i love that Lando doesn’t know how to say his best friend’s name. what stood out to me this time was the way Obi-Wan described the Force in A New Hope, which strongly implied that ANYONE can be Force Sensitive; that obviously faded with each subsequent movie, but part of me does wish they’d kept it.

X of Swords (comics, 22 issues finished 12/5/2020): i am enjoying Hickman’s X-lines!!! not so much here for the Grand Conspiracy or whatever, but the character work and highkey weirdness is fabulous--they FEEL like X-Men, despite all the shakeups in-universe. this crossover is a nice microcosm of all that: grandiloquently all over the place, but still full of cool standout moments and genuine hilarity. ILLYANA DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO SPELL MAGIC.

Fire Emblem (4 games: Sacred Stones, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, finished 12/14/2020): this was the thing that i was closest to giving up early on, but i ended up hyperfixating on it instead. that’s a credit to what the gameplay does to my lizard brain more than anything else, because the story and character writing is...insipid. it was very bizarre to witness this franchise blunder around with its animal-people racism allegory around the same time i was getting back into RWBY, and ITS animal-people racism allegory blunders. Awakening was the first time i felt anything for the franchise beyond “teehee red units disappear make exp bar go up and brain go ding,” so i’m excited for more mature storytelling in subsequent games (they MUST get better. they MUST). the child husbandry thing is...very bad tho, and Apotheosis being “challenging” entirely through the game changing all the rules is also bad.

once again no vidya games that came out this year--i’ll probably pick up Spiritfarer or Hades after the New Year, though (or maybe TLOU II! but probably not. sry Laura and Ashley). more TV and franchises this year, which made me feel In Touch with the Children but was also kinda exhausting. nothing was so egregiously terrible i dropped it without finishing! in a year like this that feels almost like an accomplishment

laurel’s top books of 2020

2020 felt like a pretty disappointing year book-wise (as well as in every other respect). I didn’t finish my goodreads challenge goal, and I read a lot of 3-star books which were worth finishing, but didn’t inspire me. but once I started looking through my list, I actually found a lot of books I really enjoyed. here are the top 15, out of 95:

Top 10

1. the witcher series by andrzej sapkowski

oh man. this was really the year of the witcher. I watched the first 4 episodes at the beginning of january and decided to dedicate my entire life to the franchise immediately. it would be hard to pick a favorite, but if I absolutely must I’ll go with the time of contempt.

2. how to hide an empire: a history of the greater united states by daniel immerwahr

absolutely best nonfiction of 2020. this book is so well-written, well-researched, and well-paced for the sheer amount of information it covers. it’s a very accessible read even if you’re not a historian, and I cannot recommend it enough.

3. the old kingdom series by garth nix

a reread, but it has been a really long time. I loved them as much as I did the first time though as a young teenager. just some really solid, creative, character-driven fantasy. like the witcher, difficult to pick a favorite, but I’ll say lireal.

4. gay new york: gender, urban culture, and the making of the gay male world 1890-1940 by george chauncey

I’d read bits and pieces of this but never the whole thing! that sourcework! obviously this is a classic in cultural history and queer studies, but it really lives up to the hype.

5. archival quality by noelle weir

a recommendation from my roommate. this graphic novel has it all: ghosts, archives, amazing art, very relatable panels I’ve been using as reaction images...everything.

6. alif the unseen by g. willow wilson

I also read the bird king this year, but I think alif wins. I’ve loved wilson’s comic writing in the past, and this novel was a great dip into urban fantasy based in arabic myth.

7. rambunctious garden: saving nature in a post-wild world by emma marris

I don’t know that I’m ready to preach marris’s thesis from the rooftops, but this book was so incredibly thought-provoking and well-argued.

8. the city on the edge of forever by harlan ellison

in my opinion, this is the best star trek episode of all time, and the graphic novel is just gorgeous.

9. sense and sensibility by jane austen

I borrowed my mom’s copy years ago and finally got around to reading it, and I’m so glad I did! I’m not a rabid jane austen fan, but this book was so enjoyable to read by the fireplace in december with a big mug of tea.

10. piranesi by susanna clarke

I was afraid this book was going to be overhyped, but it’s not! I read it in one sitting and will probably go back to it in a few years.

Runners-up

11. life on display: revolutionizing u.s. museums of science and natural history in the twentieth century by karen a. rader and victoria e. m. cain

museums? history? science education? yes, yes, and yes.

12. sundown towns: a hidden dimension of american racism by james w. louwen

this book should have permanently changed the study of midwestern history as far as I’m concerned. even knowing about sundown towns beforehand, the extent of their reach in the midwest was shocking (though, I’m sure, it would probably not be so shocking to the Black families that live/d near them). louwen’s evidence is solid, incredibly thorough, and well-explained.

I’ve read several books on the ghost dance, and I think this one does the best job of making the case for why its important to “mainstream” history.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read this book. one of my favorites of all times, but I did reread it in 2020, so it gets an honorary mention here.

1) Ishq Zahenaseeb OST- I haven’t been in peace since the day I heard this song. The soft vocals and the amazing lyrics. I love the blend of the modern romantic vibe with the sufi part. Fav lyrics “Main tabah hua, main fana hua. Mera rom jalke swah hua. Tadap meri kuch aur shadeed, tadap meri kuch aur shadeed”

2) Kehna hi kya- Bombay- Classic AR Rehman. Fav lyrics “Sitam thoda thoda hum pe shokh hawa bhi kar jaye. Aise chale, aanchal ude, dil mein ek toofan uthe. Hum toh lut gaye khade hi khade.

3) Supermassive Blackhole- Muse This song always makes me want to pick a fight with someone! Fav lyrics everytime Matt Bellamy says ohhhhh you set my soul alight. *fans self* *takes deep breath*

4) Alif OST- Again the vocals by Shuja Haider and Momina Mushtehsan. My fav lyrics in this song is probably just all of it. The song explains the relationship between God and human so well.

5) Amaro Porano Jaha Chay- From stories by Rabindranath Tagore- This is the Arijit Singh version. I don’t understand the lyrics but love the way this song is sung and the melancholic feel of the song. Also it fit in so well with the story of the episode

6) Lahu Muh Lag Gaya- Ramleela And at the 6th song my chichora side has come out. If the word coquettish was made into a song it would be this song. Full disclosure I never cared much for this song in the movie I liked it after I saw a clip of YRHPK with Shaheer and Rhea doing nain mataka to this song. Fav lyrics: Bhatak rahi hai aankh yeh malang ang ang ang. Atak gayi hai saans uske sang sang sang”

7) Channa- Atif Aslam- Coke studio- As much as I rail on Atif Aslam for singing out of scale when he does get it right its downright a delight. The softness in his voice in this song is so soothing and just makes me go weak in the knees. The mix of Punjabi lyrics and western classical arrangement works so well in this song. Whoever came up with the arrangement is a genius. Fav lyrics “ Loon Loon vich teri, deed ravan ve,Nahi reh sakdi tere bina ve”

8) Jai Jai Girivar Raj Kishori- From Siya Ke Ram. If there is anything that this show got right it was music and aesthetics. This song with the way this shot is set up, classic.Any version of Ram and Sita meeting for the first time for me is just has my heart soar. Fav lyrics: the entire end when the tempo goes up.

9) Pompeii- Basitille- This song just reminds me of my time in London. Times that I really miss a lot. It also has the line which is basically as a question I ask myself all the time “ how am I gonna be an optimist about this?”

10) Do I wanna know- Arctic Monkeys- Alex Turner’s voice is probably the most sensual thing in the world for me. I love the vibe of this song and the whole song is brilliantly written.

11) Paradise- Coldplay - I can not have a song tag without this song. I feel like this song symbolizes my need to move from one place to another ( Along with Kabira). Fav lyrics : I love all of the lyrics but I love the way he sings “lying underneath the stormy skies, she says oh I know the sun must set to rise”

12) Kabira- Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani ( both versions)- This song is just so bittersweet and sings about people who are constantly on the move to find something that feels right. Fav lyrics: “Ban liya apna pigambar, Tar liya tu aat samandar. Phir bhi sukha man ke andar kyun reh gaya”

13) Train song- Gully boy- This song is so wholesome and upbeat. Fav lyrics; ““Sapne Jinme Ho Aisi Ho Teri Aankhe Payaar Mein Jinme Ho Aisi Hi Teri Baate Jin Umide Ho Aise Tere Din Ho Chain Ho Jin Mein Aisi Hi Teri Rate”

14) Kajar Bin Kaare- Karsh Kale ft Sulaiman Merchant. When this song says ghayal kiyo jiya ra re, that is how I feel about this whole song. The lyrics and vocals are amazing but my favorite is the musical arrangement and how much fun all the people are having while playing this song. The flute bit always gives me goosebumps. Love it.

15) Mathura Nagarpathi- Raincoat- I don’t know how I have never heard of this song up until this year and now it’s one of my favorites. Shubha Mudgal can never go wrong with vocals and is as stunning as ever. The best thing for me is obviously the lyrics, so heart-wrenching and aptly describing the pain of being away from a loved one/place. It gives me all the Krishna struggling to be human while being a god feels.

Anyways I went way over but I just have a lot of feelings about music okay!! What do these songs tell about me? Well if someone figures it out do let me know lol!

Episode 3 // Ibu

Pembaca berita di televisi membacakan sebuah kejadian pembegalan di sebuah jalan protokol di tengah kota. Hal tersebut terjadi bahkan di jam yang belum begitu larut. Aku melihat jam dinding di atas tv menunjukkan pukul 8 tepat dan Dinda belum pulang.

"Dinda kemana sih bu? Masa jam segini belum pulang?" ucap Bapak yang berdiri di belakangku.

Aku sebenarnya malas menjawab pertanyaan suamiku. Karena Bapak pasti sudah tahu kalau Dinda sedang lembur. Aku menjawab sekenanya. Aku pun tahu, setelah pertanyaan ini Bapak akan membahas tentang pekerjaan Dinda dan menyuruhku menasihati Dinda untuk menjadi PNS seperti bapak dulu.

Benar saja, Bapak kembali menyinggung topik tersebut sesuai dugaanku. Aku hanya mengangguk pelan saat Bapa memintaku untuk kembali berbicara dengan Dinda. Ia pun pergi ke teras untuk merokok.

Sejak Dinda dan Alif remaja, Bapak jadi tidak pandai berkomunikasi dengan kedua anaknya. Padahal saat mereka masih SD, keduanya tak bisa lepas dari Bapak. Sekarang, aku sudah bagaikan merpati penyampai pesan sebagai penyambung antara Bapak dan anak-anak. Dinda dan Alif jadi segan bila harus mengobrol dengan Bapak yang sedikit-sedikit sudah mengomel.

"Assalamu'alaikum" suara Dinda terdengar dari pintu rumah dan sudah cukup untuk menyingkirkan cemas dihatiku.

"Wa'alaikumussalam, habis lembur, Din?" tanyaku.

"Iya bu. Lumayan lagi banyak kerjaan. Untung Ibu ngasih aku bekal bergizi jadi aku kuat untuk lembur 2 hari 2 malam juga. " Jawab Dinda sambil mencium tanganku. Matanya terlihat lelah tapi Ia masih punya energi di penghujung hari seperti ini. Ia pun langsung beranjak dan berjalan ke kamar Alif.

"Din, nanti kalau udah beres dari kamar Alif, kesini dulu yah sebentar Ibu mau ngobrol."

"Oke bu." sahut Dinda sebelum mengetuk pintu kamar Alif.

Aku tidak berniat mengulang topik yang bapak pinta untuk aku diskusikan lagi dengan Dinda. Ada hal lain yang ingin aku bahas dengan Dinda. Semenjak, Bapak pensiun setahun yang lalu, penghasilannya menjadi tidak sebesar dulu. Aku yang mengatur tabungan bapak sejak dahulu dan sekarang jumlahnya kian menipis. Aku berniat untuk memutar uang tabungan bapak dengan sedikit bantuan Dinda.

Suara pintu kamar Alif terbuka dan mengusir lamunanku. Dinda pun keluar dan duduk di sebelahku.

"Iya ada apa Bu?"

"Iya jadi begini, Din. Kamu kan tahu, tabungan bapak makin tipis. Daripada habis, jadi Ibu ada rencana mau bikin toko grosir. Untuk tempatnya sudah ada. Cuma yaa.. Kayaknya masih kurang untuk modalnya. Dinda masih ada uang kan di tabungan?"

Dinda sedikit berpikir "Oh gitu. Dinda kira ada apa. Kalau tabungan masih ada kok, Bu. Cuma emang ga banyak, soalnya baru Dinda pake juga."

"Dinda pake untuk apa sampai sedikit lagi? Mau kamu pake liburan lagi yah?"

Aku melihat Dinda hanya diam. Ah benar sepertinya benar dia akan liburan lagi.

"Aduh Din, kamu kan baru tahun lalu liburan sama temen-temen kamu. Masa Udah mau liburan lagi. Mau pergi kemana lagi sekarang? " Aku jadi agak kesal. Dinda masih terdiam.

"Sudahlah Din, tabung saja uangnya, bisa kamu pake bantu Ibu sama Bapa atau bisa kamu pake untuk tambah-tambah kamu nikah. Umur kamu lho udah ga muda lagi nak."

Dinda lalu berdiri dengan cepat. "Aku mau mandi dulu Bu."

Dinda lalu beranjak dari sofa. Aku baru akan menahannya, namun langkahnya goyah. Badannya seperti kehilangan keseimbangan dan terjatuh bebas ke lantai dengan bunyi gedebuk yang cukup keras. Aku pun mendekati badan Dinda yang terbujur dilantai sembari berteriak.

"BAPAK, TOLONG PAK!"
