Cheongdam-dong Alice. 7
Story: 7
Acting: 8
Chemistry: 9
So this is going to another one of those love it or hate it dramas. I’m honestly somewhat in the middle hanging on. This is a simple cliche over the top, overacting drama. There are a ton of cringing moments, but yet there are a lot of cute adorable ones too. The storyline has a great overall message to it, if you overlook the pile of backstabbing characters this drama produces including the main characters as well. I know this doesn’t sound like I’m selling it too well, but for those that do like a rom/melodrama with some cute moments check it out. Give it a couple episodes and if you can’t stand it chuck it down it’s white rabbit hole.

Boa sorte no RPG, viu? ⚡

Review Drama Korea : Cheongdam-dong Alice (2012)
Review Drama Korea : Cheongdam-dong Alice (2012)

Expectations VS. Reality: A Year End Review
This year was so full of dramas, I would be a liar if I said I didn't have a list of left over 2013 dramas that I still want to watch. And am currently still watching. But if there is one thing I do know, it's that this year was filled with expectations –and non-expectations-- of what could be every time an interesting drama promo appeared. Will I get lured in and then burned? Be bored? Will it be awesome? Horrible? If my experiences in Dramaland has taught me anything it's to always be ready for a twist. Dramas that had me initially excited were watched and then abandoned or slugged through while dramas I didn't expect to get much from took me for a pleasant surprise. Here is my year end review! Expectations vs. Reality.
NINE
Nine had me excited. It promised Lee Jin Wook who is a favorite of mine, it was coming to us by the creators of Queen In Hyun's Man which was highly entertaining and it promised mystery as well. When I actually sat down to watch it, however, I was surprised to find myself completely bored by the first episode. And while it took me a whole year to get back to it, I was glad I did! A new twist on the time-travel genre that Dramaland has been loving nowadays, an interesting and just lead with odds set firmly against him and a detestable (though bumbling) villain helped to make this drama quite a gripping watch from sort-of beginning to end.
Expectations: Suspense; love; action! Lee Jin Wook's face!
Reality: A slow start but once it gets the ball rolling it becomes hard to let go. The love story gets an interesting twist and there are some actual repercussions for the future to fiddling around in the past in Dramaland. Who knew? Also, Lee Jin Wook's face!
SCHOOL 2013
I love a good teen drama, so I was very much onboard about watching School 2013. I couldn't wait to have a Korean drama that discussed the trials and tribulations of being a high school student with a fresh young ensemble cast and the reunited duo of Choi Daniel and Jang Na Ra. Turns out the drama went in a different direction than I thought, and while I certainly didn't hate it, I still wish there was more. Moreeeee!
Expectations: Teen drama with focus on multiple characters, problems, and perspectives with the added bonus of having it set in a different school/societal culture than what was my own. Laughs; tears; the whole thing.
Reality: Definitely teen drama but with more focus on a particular pairing than what I would have thought. Some characters I felt had story lines with potential that ultimately never came to much fruition but entertaining with a great teacher pairing.
ALICE IN CHEONGDAM-DONG
I can't say was particularly excited for this drama. I really liked the cast and I don't mind a rags-to-riches story set in the world of fashion (despite what happened with that last year in Fashion King). It was just that there wasn't much about the story released for the longest and I wasn't exactly sure how they'd fit in their Alice in Wonderland theme or how it would all be executed. So, while all the parts were there, I wasn't seeing how they would come together. I probably would have skipped this one if it weren't for that white rabbit, Curiosity, leading me down it's hole. One thing for sure is that I came out the other end pleasantly surprised by the journey!
Expectations: Admittedly not much, but with the cast hopefully something breezy with magical chemistry and a nice come-up story.
Reality: Both silly and serious, I was surprised by the drama's realistic approach to working hard vs. dreaming despite it's more fantastical theme. The characters find themselves, find out about themselves—the good and the bad parts—and deal with their problems in a way that felt both true to them and relatable.
FLOWER BOY NEXT DOOR
As the third installment in tVN's Flower Boy series, I was of course looking forward to this one. It came much later after the second one and the sudden promotions definitely fueled the hype. Rather than have great expectations for the drama itself, I had them for the channel it was airing on and the staff and cast as each part of the series is vastly different. They did not disappoint and I am happy to say it. And while the drama is more slow going and a tad more melo than it's predecessors I do think it was time well spent.
Expectations: A breezy; fun comedy as is expected from tVN with a fresh take on the rom-com genre and more realistic writing.
Reality: OK, well our lead is a childish genius; the next door neighbor leaves post-it love drawings that pile up and turn into a flip book, and the heroine is a super-frugal introvert but it was charming and sweet and yes, even realistic in it's portrayal of people searching for a connection in others while feeling a little alone in the world. Breezy and fun? Sometimes? Fresh take? Sort of! Realistic writing? I think, yes...well...where it counts anyway.
THAT WINTER; THE WIND BLOWS
From the writer and PD of Padam, Padam which was my favorite drama last year comes the drama based on a movie that I really liked. Was I expecting a lot? Yes, I was. And while I didn't necessarily get everything I was hoping for, I do think this still comes out as one of the stronger dramas of the year. Everything is beautiful, the writing is still pretty tops, Jo In Sung does not disappoint in his come back to the small screen, and it managed to stretch out two hours in to 16. Now, if only it managed to make an ending that actually ended things.
Expectations: HIGH. So high.
Reality: Fast paced and gripping drama that utilizes it's beautiful cast and scenery that makes good on an interesting forbidden-love-that-isn't-actually-forbidden set up only to wrap it all together at the end in the most ambiguous way it possibly could. Wait? What's happening? Sixteen hours of television that didn't give me a straight answer to it's own question is what.
ALL ABOUT MY ROMANCE
Shin Ha Kyun is the lead! He's never steered me wrong and I didn't expect him to do it now, let's be real. And with a romance on two different sides of a political spectrum, I was definitely intrigued. It's a drama, I thought would be more serious but I was taken aback by it's super light and breezy manner. It was a rom-com that was actually a rom-com and I was so, so happy for the brain break and something to just kick back and enjoy without too much thinking.
Expectations: Political romance stemming from lots of heated rivalry might be serious but ultimately rewarding; especially in the hands of actors and actresses who are capable and whom I like.
Reality: Light and funny. An easy, breezy romance where the main couple wasn't all about the arguing but two people coming together because they actually like each other. Love how they are honest about their feelings enough to put their political differences on a back burner. Who knew love without excessive bickering could be a thing in a K-drama? Especially between two people so different!
SHARK
Kim Nam Gil? Son Ye Jin? Together? Of course, I had to watch it. I love Kim Nam Gil, he is one of my favorites and I had been looking forward to his comeback project for months after he was released from military service. Maybe even from the time he started off his military service. Plus, I am a sucker for the anti-hero and revenge and it was promising everything I liked. And while I was hooked from the get-go, I was sorely disappointed in an ending that couldn't come round in that full-circle it was going on and on about.
Expectations: A little thank you for everyone who suffered through the ending episodes of Bad Guy, so many things that drama should have been and no dying. ...Right?? Dying is a not a thing? Right?!
Reality: Suspenseful with mystery, a great heroine, and a misguided anti-hero. And dying is a thing.
I HEAR YOUR VOICE
This may come as a surprise but one of the most popular dramas of the year is one that I just couldn't bring myself to care about all through it's promotional run. It was only after I read rave reviews during it's airing time that I decided to give it a shot.
Expectations: None...but what's this I hear about amazing chemistry between the leads?
Reality: Nice use of a supernatural ability and plot-point, great characters, and a story that could be suspenseful, funny, and touching. I never did get into the romance of the show, but I did enjoy the whole package in general. Also, this is how you bring an ending 'round full-circle, guys. Winter and Shark, take notes.
TWO WEEKS
I wasn't initially interested but as more and more news came out and more and more casting news came out, I had to say I became progressively more excited for this show. It promised something closer to a more straight-up action show and with such a small time frame to accomplish everything, it seemed like something that at the very least wouldn't be a waste of time. And it most definitely was not! I think if I had to pick my favorite drama this year, it would be this one. I loved all of it's parts and while the action steadily decreased as the show went along, I never lost interest.
Expectations: Action with a great cast? Was at least expecting something watchable even though I was not entirely interested.
Reality: A unlikable “hero” is actually not so bad after all while running from the authority for a murder he was framed for, trying to keep himself from getting hurt or sick because he has to save the cutest daughter in the world, and also trying not to get the ex-girlfriend even more mad at him than she already is. It's fun, touching, and there is even a ray of hope at the end. The reality is I loved this drama.
HEARTLESS CITY
This drama had me in a similar situation as I Hear Your Voice. In fact, it was the same exact situation!
Expectations: None...but, hot hero you say? Sizzling chemistry?
Reality: The sizzling chemistry is there but sadly it takes a back burner to the immense twist and turns the show throws at you through out it's run. Who's on who's side? Uhh, probably more people than you think. But the actors did a great job and the story, despite not always having a great balance between all of it's parts, was certified crack.
HEIRS
With the cast, the promotions that started before even the promotions started, and the over-all hype it was hard not to expect something from Heirs. It's premise promised a glimpse into the lives of rich teens at what could only be the 1% to the teens in School 2013 (and look, Kim Woo Bin stars in both!), so I was think more along the lines of Gossip Girl. In the end...I'm not sure what I got, but it was like ordering a luxury brand item only to have it finally arrive and realize you got scammed. Can I sue for fraud?
Expectations: Gossip Girl-esque drama—not perfect, not always sensical, but somehow highly entertaining with characters you actually grow attached to and even care about.
Reality: There was so much wrist-grabbing I couldn't tell if the guys in this drama wanted the heroine or her arm. The best couple was not the main couple (not even close) and there were many could-be interesting characters and elements that didn't go anywhere or do anything. The plot was actually just a big tease as well. But at least you watch until the end...that's sort of a good thing, I guess. I have no idea.
UNEMPLOYED ROMANCE
Another drama in which a bulk my personal hype came from the casting. Nam Goong Min is one I've been keeping my eye on since Can You Hear My Heart? so, I was excited for anything he was cast as a lead in. But it was also a stand out as it was a drama in which the two leads were on the same playing field—just average people, no geniuses; no chaebols. With there being only 10 episodes I figured there would be no harm in giving this a shot. And while I felt it got muddled down thanks to flashbacks, the very mini series gets a thumbs up from me.
Expectations: Good cast means good drama, right? Two leads on the same playing field means for something relatable and cute.
Reality: A bit odd ball but ultimately cute and entertaining, the drama gets dragged down a bit in it's 10 episode run with flashbacks. It's worth a watch even as just filler between other dramas.
MI RAE'S CHOICE
Another time-travel drama but this time, someone comes to the future to fix the present. It's enough of a twist to warrant some interest, but not enough of one to make this drama feel different from any other time-travel drama. The hook was in the heroine's future self trying to get present heroine to pick a different guy...to marry. The reason? Someone dies. Is there a chance the second lead will get the girl instead of the first lead? Not because of crazy public reaction that results in the writer switching the love interest but because...it's actually written to be that way from the start? Must find out!
Expectations: Bubbly cute time-travel rom-com in which the second lead might actually be the one but of course not without the first lead giving him a rightful run for his money. He is the one who's supposed to get the girl after all.
Reality: The whole point of the show seems to lose it's urgency as the show goes on, but it does remain cute throughout even though there are a considerable amount of more melo moments thrown in. And even though there are two great guys (with flaws of course) no choice is actually...made. Or should I say no one gets to find out except for Mi Rae. Should have been called Mi Rae's Secret Choice.
GODDESS OF MARRIAGE
Pretty much watched for all the wrong reasons—Kim Ji Hoon.
Expectations: Abs.
Reality: ABS! It's a brief moment but it was worth it. You might want to skip the rest of this one though. It's a pretty miserable show and almost everyone is unhappy for pretty much all of it's 36 episode run. However, it's good if, for some reason, you need a melo fix.
MONSTAR
Another of this year's teen dramas, it promised music with a rag-tag bunch creating a band, experiences of first love, and going through the motions of growing up. While it was in no way a bad show, it did have its flaws such as episodes that may have ran way too long, not enough focus on the band as I would have personally liked, and sometimes just a downright more serious tone than I had imagined. Gimme a heads up, next time!
Expectations: Teen drama (I just really love teen dramas)! Music; friendship; love.
Reality: Thankfully all of that, but there are also some super sad moments mixed in as well. It can be a bit jarring but all in all I enjoyed this one.
SECRET
An interesting revenge plot where the heroine is on a vendetta against an ex-fiancé while another man is on a vendetta against her for a murder she doesn't even know happened until she goes to jail for it in her fiancé's place. But going to jail in his place is not the reason she is taking revenge. If it sounds crazy...that's because it is. Even still, Secret turns out to be one of the more entertaining dramas this year and is absolutely engrossing in it's...insanity? Yep. Insanity.
Expectations: REVEEEEENGE!
Reality: The guy who is seeking revenge ends up falling for the woman he is basically stalking and making life miserable for. Everyone is just crazy! Is Bae Soo Bin slapping himself repeatedly??? He is! Creepiest romance ever.

WHO ARE YOU
Ahh...this show had so much potential. In the end, even though I didn't make it to the end, it wasn't so bad...it was just that it's most interesting aspect remained just an aspect and I think was never really utilized to the fullest. I may get back to it, though.
Expectations: Kim Jae Wook as the ghost? It must be the most important role. Super natural elements that seem to be both mysterious and terrifying.
Reality: Kim Jae Wook Y U NO TALK?! Not terrifying, but dammit if So Yi Hyun isn't trying to make it seem that way. The love story that should be happening has no chance.
MASTER'S SUN
I know! I must be crazy for dropping this one, but I just never really got into it. If anything, I think I was expecting more from the ghostly plot and Gong Hyo Jin than anything else. The Hong Sisters can be hit or miss but still I didn't want to miss this one. I never finished it, but I might one day.
Expectations: Thrills an chills...with romance? Awesome!
Reality: Gong Hyo Jin and So Ji Sub, surprisingly make a great pair, and while I never felt they were crackling they were certainly cute. Unfortunately neither that or perfect security guard Seo In Guk could get me to keep watching this show. It was a bit slow and I found myself losing interest as it went on. Not a feeling you want to feel.
WHEN A MAN LOVES
I must admit...I was actually interested in where this one might go. I didn't even stay to find out.
Expectations: Entertainment.
Reality: “I trashed your dad's book shop and made his life hell as well as yours but I'm in love with you and you should love me too because I Google search dating tips!” Basically the show. And basically why you should stay away.
CYRANO DATING AGENCY
It's the fourth installment to the Flower Boy series! And maybe it's because it doesn't have “Flower Boy” in the title, but it didn't hold the same magic as the others for me. The couple of the week part seemed great, but I actually didn't get past, I think, 3 or 4 and a half episodes.
Expectations: Another rom-com from tVN? Sounds good to me!
Reality: Not bad but also not very interesting.
LEVEL 7 CIVIL SERVANT
With a tongue-twister of a name like that, it has to be good right? It had actors I liked and was a rom-com set in the spy world. I actually watch 2 episodes and ran off.
Expectations: Love in the time of Spy Training.
Reality: Oh gawd, what is this?
Right now, I am currently watching Medical Top Team and Answer Me 1994. So expect to see some brief run-off 2013 drama reviews next year! I want to say thank you to all my followers up until now and to my new followers as well. I've slowed down with posts in the later half of this year but I am glad for all those that stuck around. Hoping you all have a great New Year! And praying your drama expectations for the new batch of up and coming shows will be heard and done, ahaha!
