Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé) from Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020 -?? ) || Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany) from Perry Mason (2020 -??)
...
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set nearly 50 years after the original series, during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s. It takes place in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place "deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension". The characters are connected in a conflict between the Mexican folklore deity, Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo), the caretaker of the dead and guide to the great beyond, and her spiritual sister, the demoness Magda (Natalie Dormer), who believes mankind is inherently evil and aims to prove her point. Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner, veteran Detective Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane), are tasked with a gruesome murder case and soon become embroiled in Los Angeles's history as well as its present, while racial tensions, the looming threat of war, and Nazi conspiracies threaten to derail them at every turn.
Perry Mason is set in 1932, Los Angeles is prospering while the rest of the U.S. is recovering from the grip of the Great Depression. The series focuses on the origin story of famed defense lawyer Perry Mason: down-and-out private investigator Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys) is struggling with his trauma from The Great War and being divorced. He is hired for a sensational child kidnapping trial and his investigation portends major consequences for Mason, his client, and the city itself.
...
In both the show there are a female preacher character: Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany in Perry Mason) and Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels) are based on real-life celebrity preacher Aimee Semple McPherson. The leading fundamentalist evangelist of the glittering '20s,” Aimee Semple McPherson is one of the first religious entertainers of the 20th century.
A story made and set in Hollywood, Sister Aimee's celebrity reveals how little has changed over the last 100 years. Throngs of worshipers, media scrutiny, an allegedly faked kidnapping plot, divorce, multiple lawsuits, world tours, the claim she could heal the sick, and sermons with high production value all contribute to the continued fascination of this figure.
In the show, Molly and Alice primarily wear a white satin bias-cut dress with various stoles and collars switched out depending on the sermon. She does occasionally get to wear regular clothes, which are always light-colored and tastefully fashionable.
At this early stage in Perry Mason, Sister Alice appears to be a true believer not only in God but in her abilities. Unlike the real Sister Aimee or Sister Alice in Perry Mason, Sister Molly in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels doesn’t seem to believe she is an actual vector for God.
Often lacking agency — her mother controls her every move — Sister Molly's faith is put to the test throughout the series. She cannot be the virtuous woman everyone wants her to be and still retain a semblance of self. Her so-called gift from God is also a curse.
Tumblr media
Special nod to Lily Taylor, who plays Sister Alice’s controlling mother, Birdy, who is always soberly dressed in blacks and dark colors in contrast to the pale colors worn by Sister Alice.
Miss Adelaide (Amy Madigan), Sister Molly's mother, is essentially a stage mom, shaping her daughter in an image that will draw a larger audience, which is why she is so concerned when Molly's sermon takes a chilling turn. Palpable rage and a warning is not the Joyful Voices Ministry brand, which saw her being introduced in Episode 2 as "In the battle with Satan, armed with but a song and a smile." Her mother tasks a bodyguard to follow her 30-something daughter to protect her “virtue.” The real monster in Sister Molly’s storyline is the woman who brought her into the world and forced this life of leadership on her.

Shea Whigham as Sheriff Eli Thompson in Boardwalk Empire (2010 - 2014) || Shea Whigham as P.I. Pete Strickland in Perry Mason (2020 -??)
...
Boardwalk Empire is an American period drama series from premium cable channel HBO, set in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition era. It stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson. It is a period drama focusing on Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (based on the historical Enoch L. Johnson), a political figure who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition period of the 1920s and 1930s.
Eli Thompson is based on the historical figure of Alf Johnson, who was Nucky Johnson's brother and was a county sheriff in the 1920s.
As the brother of Atlantic County Treasurer, Nucky Thompson, Eli, not surprisingly, manages to find his way into the position of Sheriff. He and his brother are an effective duo when it comes to keeping a hold on the reigns of the city's corrupt government and underworld. Unspoken tension exists between the brothers however, with rivalry and resentment lurking just below the façade of smiling exteriors.
Both Shea Whigham characters shares a large number of similarities: they both have a large family, a lovely wife, problems with alcohol and gambling, have a work connected as public order, but act mostly over the law in shady or illegal business: Eli Thompson is Atlantic City's Sheriff and protect his powerful and corrupted brother smuggling of alcohol, while Pete Strickland was a policeman for the Vice Squad in St. Bernardino and actually works as a Private Investigator and uses shady tricks to get his informations.

“Do you think I can talk to God? Do you think I can hear His voice?"
Powerhouse Tatiana Maslany's Sister Alice McKeegan is the spiritual and emotional center of HBO's great new show Perry Mason set in early 1930's LA.
It's the perfect showcase for Tatiana's depth as an actor with her extensive NY stage work and always on the right side of solid tv/film roles.
This shot was from the Toronto film set of 'The Other Half' a few years ago where I was shooting gallery work.
In the last episode 'Chapter Seven' the closing scene is quite striking with Tatiana running down a palm tree lined LA street, blood on her face, tears in her eyes in a 1930's white dress and cape.
And there is still one episode to come, not to mention season 2. Probably one of the best written/acted/directed/designed shows on cable today.

Who is Tatiana Maslany, the new star of She-Hulk?
Tumblr media
Emmy-winning actress Tatiana Maslany has been cast as She-Hulk in the upcoming Disney+ TV series, breathing new life into Stan Lee's 80s comic-book character.
Maslany's acting chops are well-documented - she won her 2016 Emmy for starring in five seasons of BBC America's TV show Orphan Black, as more than a dozen clones of a woman trying to escape her past.
This is her first big foray into superhero territory though, introducing fans to a character not everyone will be familiar with.

She-Hulk's human alter-ego is lawyer Jennifer Walters, who also happens to be the cousin of Bruce Banner, better known as Hulk.
Created by Lee and artist John Buscema, she first appeared in The Savage She-Hulk comic in 1980.
Marvel's YouTube channel calls Jennifer a "bad-ass lawyer breaking glass ceilings and a lot more". But after being shot, a life-saving blood transfusion from Bruce transforms her into a "giant, green rage monster".
The diluted dose of gamma-filled blood gives her a milder version of Hulkiness, so Jennifer learns to "keep her calm and her smarts while in Hulk form", unlike her cousin.
She-Hulk is arguably a more entertaining character than Hulk - Marvel.com says she "backs up her sensational strength with her savage wit and confidence", while Hulk is famously toddler-like, typified by phrases like "Hulk smash!".
Having calmed her inner green monster, Jennifer moves to New York to work with the Avengers and her friends the Fantastic Four, tackling supervillains and fighting crime in court - rarely returning to her human form.
She also finds time for the odd romance, notably with Thor, who presumably wasn't intimidated by her physical prowess.
The news was welcomed by Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk in the Avengers films.

Who is Tatiana Maslany?
The Canadian actress, 34, found an early love of acting, appearing in local productions as a young child and working in professional TV shows while in secondary school, including Canadian children's television series 2030 CE (2002-03).
She went on to appear in Canadian TV series Heartland (2008-10) and Being Erica (2009-11) and also notably played Mary in the BBC miniseries The Nativity (2010).
Maslany also got noticed at the Sundance film festival that year, winning the breakout performance prize for the film Grown Up Movie Star, playing Ruby, aged 13, who has to survive life with her rural father after her mother runs away to become an actress.
In 2013, Maslany wrote a blog for the BBC about Orphan Black, where she said playing scenes with clones of herself was "one of the biggest challenges I've faced as an actor".
"I look insane when we shoot those scenes because ultimately I'm on an empty set talking and reacting to nothing. It's very much about imagination," she wrote.
"At the same time it's a highly technical process because I have to hit certain marks and my eyes have to be focused in the right place in order for the special effects to layer in seamlessly."
Such work on set should stand her in good stead for working on a superhero series, which will no doubt involve plenty of green-screen and CGI work.
The actress's other work includes a key role as Sister Alice McKeegan in HBO/Sky Atlantic's series Perry Mason, as well as TV series BoJack Horseman in 2015 and a couple of 2013 episodes of Parks and Recreation.
Why haven't we seen much of She-Hulk before now?
Until now, She-Hulk has never taken off in the same way as Hulk, who has enjoyed his own cartoon series, TV series, and of course various films, most successfully played on the big screen by Ruffalo in the Avengers universe.
She had a brief appearance in the cartoon, in 1983 in an episode called Enter: She Hulk, but the character didn't really take off, leaving the main stage at the time to DC's Wonder Woman TV series.
Efforts to include She-Hulk in a Hulk film starring the original TV star Lou Ferringo never materialised, and nor did a She Hulk TV show.
Although a film in 1991 was going to star Brigitte Nielsen in the main role, this also never got past the promotional shots.
There isn't much documentation around as to why She-Hulk didn't make it properly onto either the small or big screen. It could have been down to a lack of financing or simply not enough popularity for the character.
But things have changed.
The huge success of Marvel's Avengers, and female characters including Captain Marvel, Black Widow and DC's Wonder Woman, has had an impact.
There has also been the recent success of Netflix's Marvel series Jessica Jones, first released in 2015. It was cancelled last year after three series, making way for new characters such as She-Hulk.
A second Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot is due to be released, along with an upcoming Black Widow film starring Scarlett Johanssen. There is also the possibility of a female Thor film in 2020 called Thor: Love and Thunder.
So the way is most definitely being paved for what Disney+ will certainly hope will be great success for She-Hulk, assuming she manages to keep her temper.

WIG REVIEW: PERRY MASON
Tumblr media
It’s time for a prestige tv show wig review!! HBO’s reboot of Perry Mason has wrapped its season and I have a lot to say about it. SPOILERS AHEAD if you haven’t watched the full season. I had never watched the original Perry Mason (or read the books) but my mom did both and watching the new series with her was a lot of her comparing the new with the old. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE WIGS? Let’s discuss. Much like all HBO shows, the wig budget seems virtually nonexistent despite the fact that all HBO shows are definitely made out of money. WHAT GIVES?!?! I’ll be breaking down the hair character by character (skipping for the most part the wigless characters):
PERRY MASON
Tumblr media
So many many of you have been trying to get me to watch The Americans, which is how most Americans were introduced to actor Matthew Rhys. AND I’M STILL NOT GONNA WATCH IT because though apparently there are many wigs, they are wigs within the narrative of the show so: WHATEVER. THEY ARE ALLOWED TO BE BAD! MOVING ON! I was introduced to Mr. Rhys first by running into him (literally) in my neighborhood (we’re neighbors!) and then seeing him as a grumpy grump in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (there is a neighborhood theme happening here...) Anyway: he is really good in this show and I was thankful every week that Perry was not played by Robert Downey, Jr (who originally was set to play him but still produced). Regardless: he doesn’t wear a wig but he does wear the shit out of some hats.
PETE STRICKLAND
Tumblr media
Technically, Perry’s frenemy Pete is wigless as well but he wears the hell out of a mustache and that cannot go unnoticed!
DELLA STREET
Tumblr media
Perry’s girl Friday and I guess the moral center of the show has one of the better wigs but it is still kind of the pits. Set in 1931-32, the series wigmaster clearly decided that ALL WOMEN wore fingerwave bobs and therefore all female characters have basically the same wig, with varying levels of success. Della’s is not the worst but that is mainly because she is constantly wearing hats.
Tumblr media
When not wearing hats...it’s another story, dog. This thing is an untamed nightmare of bends and angles. Still, compared to the other fingerwave bobs in this show, it is (sadly!) one of the best.
EMILY DODSON
Tumblr media
First off, I’m really glad that one of my favorite characters in GLOW is on this show. However, UGH THIS WIG. We first encounter Emily as the mother of a kidnapped/murdered baby who soon becomes the #1 suspect.
Tumblr media
Therefore, throughout the series her wig really takes a turn from bored housewife to inmate to courthouse to cemetery resurrections and back again. And through it all, this wig takes a journey from bent wig to more bent wig!
Tumblr media
Even in the courtroom....YIKES. Look at the shine on this thing! And the texture. HORRIFIC.
Tumblr media
No amount of prestige lighting can hide its horror!!!!
LUPE GIBBS
Tumblr media
The only female character who is NOT running around in a fingerwave bob is Perry’s love interest/aviator/landlord, Lupe. I guess this character was supposed to be ahead of her time and kind of a Mexican Amelia Earhart but much like her characterization, this wig was kind of a mess, in fountains and out.
PAUL DRAKE
Tumblr media
Again, dude doesn’t have a wig but it must be noted that he wears hats well.
CLARA DRAKE
Tumblr media
So straight up: I was worried about Paul Drake’s wife for basically ALL OF THIS SERIES. As soon as he was introduced as a black cop trying to navigate the very corrupt and even more racist LAPD and then it was revealed that he had a pregnant wife: I FEARED SHE AND THE BABY WOULD BE KILLED SOMEHOW. These fears truly crystallized when I started focusing on her wig, which is definitely the absolute worst wig on this show - the seamwork, texture, and curls are all a travesty. I knew that HBO would not be throwing wig bucks at a character that was not long for this series. BUT TWIST! Not only did she and baby live (halleluj!) but after quitting the LAPD and working for Perry, they somehow afforded a sweet new pad! I still don’t know how finances work on this show but fine! Now please get her a better wig for season 2!
LINDA MASON
Tumblr media
First only heard as an angry voice on a phone, Perry’s ex-wife Linda, as played by the incomparable Gretchen Mol finally surfaced somewhere in the middle of this series. AND WON ALL THE WIG AWARDS. Did Gretchen Mol get to use her own hair person? Or her own hair? These mysteries still linger, as do many other mysteries in this series, but regardless: THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME ONE LADY WITH GOOD HAIR. Sadly, she was the only one. We hardly knew ye!
BIRDIE McKEEGAN
Tumblr media
Straight up: I LOVE LILY TAYLOR and think she can do no wrong. I was thrilled that she was in this show, even if she plays a total Mommie Dearest monster. Her wig is totally serviceable? But since we’re talking about Lily Taylor, she probably deserved better.
SISTER ALICE McKEEGAN
Tumblr media
Yes, I left the craziest wig for last. As Lily Taylor’s daughter/evangelical lunatic/sexual assault survivor/baby resurrector/definite witch, Tatiana Maslany brought the CRAZY to this show and her wig brought it too. And no - I still haven’t watched Orphan Black and I’m fine, thanks.
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THIS DAMN WIG. Inspired somewhere between Elsa Lancaster’s Bride of Frankenstein, Jean Harlow, and every Halloween fright wig cut into a bob, this wig is a rumpled, crumpled MESS.
Tumblr media
I think I speak for us all when I say to this wig: OH HELL NO.
Tumblr media
This trio of wigs is truly the three horsemen of the apocalypse. GET IT TOGETHER, HBO’S WIG BUDGET DEPARTMENT!!!
Tumblr media
The real twist at the end (SPOILER!) is when Sister Alice books it out of her own baby resurrection only to resurface as a brunette, working at a diner. I did think it was hilarious that character named Alice would end up working in a diner - how many tv shows are you trying to reboot, HBO?
Tumblr media
IF ONLY.
Tumblr media
Anyway, this wig is just as bad as Alice’s blonde wig! The little wispy spit curls are 100% inspired by Betty Boop and the whole thing looks about as realistic as Betty Boop as well. Also: Alice gave no further information on dead or living baby wherabouts, leaving a huge gaping mystery at the end of this show which my mom found REALLY REALLY annoying but I guess the point is: this bitch is probably a witch. OK?
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ
