Kronos Quartet taking a bow, Coolidge Auditorium, Library of Congress, Capitol Hill, Washington, DC, 18 April 2024.
The past four weeks have provided amazing musical experiences thanks to the Library of Congress and the Folger Consort. We have heard live performances of music ranging from the 13th century Spanish king and composer Alfonso X el Sabio through the French Baroque and Brahms to pop with Metallica and Elton John.
On Thursday we had tickets for the 50th Anniversary Concert by the Kronos Quartet, electrifying figuratively and literally. I have long been a fan of Kronos, founded 50 years ago at North Seattle Community College and from their beginning presenters of avant garde composers even as they try to bring serious music to the masses. On Thursday we sat in the seats just behind one of those composers Charlton Singleton whose composition "Testimony" brought the audience to its feet. The first time in my life that I could offer thanks directly to the composer and have a brief intermission conversation with him. By the way, Singleton is also a top flight jazz performer, and his newish group Ranky Tanky is getting lots of positive commentary.
For someone who is a bit of a music junkie, the weeks have been heavenly!

Like every other fan of classical or folk music in the tags, define release date!
The options are:
Oldest recording: Even this one is a little tricky. It'd probably be one of the ones off of Ewan MacColl's 1962 Jacobite Songs album, (though some of his that made the list are from compilations where I'm not sure which year the specific recording is from. Here's one
Oldest with a distinct[ish] publication/first performance date: Cantigas de Santa Maria (1200s)
Possibly the oldest but you'd have to do a lot of research and define what makes something the "same song" to see if it predates the 1200s: the majority of the folk songs, here's a short sampling
And the oldest that was written to be recorded and the recording is performed by the people who wrote it: Rainbow's Stargazer (1976)
fuck the order of songs on ur spotify wrapped, i wanna know what the oldest song (by release date) is in your top 100.
