I'm sure most of us watched the 2012 film adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. But I’m also pretty sure nobody saw that movie and thought “woah I would like to dress like those characters”. Well I guess John Galliano thought differently because his Spring Summer 2024 collection for Maison Margiela, resembled the costumes. From the nude and tight corseted  prostitutes to the poor and desolate who lined the streets with torn and tattered clothes, Galliano captured it all. 

For the weeks following Paris Fashion week it felt like the conversation around the show was inaccessible. Floods of Tik-Tokers were recreating the porcelain makeup look, created in collaboration with Pat McGrath. Twitter or X was a stream of memes and clips of actors who walked in the show such as Gwedoline Christie. The viral nature of the show made it impossible to avoid. Many claimed the theatricality of the show was bringing excitement back to the runways of fashion week. There was definitely excitement and buzz around this show as a complete performance. But what can be said for the clothes and the inspiration itself. 

The show opened with the first model emerging from a back lit foggy tunnel, while staggering and walking with a cane. The backlighting highlighted the accentuated shapes of the models' figures, a theme that is consistent throughout the show. There was a key focus on shapes and disfigured human form. Presented inside a vaulted warehouse right underneath Pont Alexandre III, the show played with stereotypical Parisian characters. From the prostitutes of Le Fourcy to cat burglars and gamblers, Galliano covered it all. I suppose this is where the similarities to Les Miserables comes from. Galliano himself said he was inspired by the “seedy underbelly” of Paris and wanted to recreate that in his show. 

The execution  of the theme is immaculate. The designer delivered his intent without any doubts. The models were wearing form fitting corsets, adorning see through dresses that resemble something from an impressionist painting while others wore patched up jackets and ill fitting trousers. One key element of this show that drew a lot of traction was the pubic hair underwear, and this is where my real critique begins. Pubic hair is still something very taboo among women, we are often shamed and ridiculed for this, so to see it now become a fashion statement, is a bit insulting. There was a lot of hypersexualisation of models, I mean corsets and latex were worn throughout the show, both being rather fetishised clothing items. This is consistent with the theme of course and the designer used the latex material in a nontraditional way by draping it rather than leaving it to be form fitting.   

  Regardless I find the inspiration for this theme borderline offensive. A luxury fashion brand claiming they were inspired by the seedy underbelly of a city, reads to me like “we were inspired by the poor and destitute”. It’s almost insulting how on the nose the whole thing was. To have models wearing clothes that had fake patches and ill fitting tailoring, I mean it's just so on the nose. It seems to me to be another show that is taking something that the working class is criticized and shamed for and presenting it as art for the rich. 

Most of the people in the audience have more than likely never had to patch up their clothes or worn hand me downs that didn't fit properly. So for Galiano to commodify this aesthetic is jarring. As I mentioned it is a beautiful collection, but this ongoing widespread aestheticization of poverty is exhausting and relentless. To some degree at least Galliano admits where his influences lie. That confronts us with the truth but it also paints the designer out of touch and ignorant.

At least the day had started well for Valentina, Queen of Novoselic (nee Borghese, daughter of the Duke of Orelli). As soon as the clock struck five, Gabriel had slipped from between her bedsheets and tiptoed to the door after kissing her forehead. As usual, she'd lazily tried to grasp his hand or shoulders, sleepily uttering that she commanded him to return to bed. And as usual, he'd whispered something terribly naughty he'd do to her later if he wasn't otherwise occupied as the Head of Novoselic Castle security. As soon as she watched him retreat into one of the two hidden passages connected to her room, she'd rolled over only to awake at a far more appropriate hour of 10 AM.

At precisely 10:15, a maid entered with her breakfast tray, perfectly portioned servings of wheat toast with accompanying jam, a bowl of fruit, yogurt, and a vegetable drink, which Valentina pinched her nose before downing first. This had been followed by Daphne, her senior secretary (the other two had been consigned to email and letter duty until noon) and her tablet. While older and far too smiley for Valentina's liking, she could ignore the woman's graying copper hair in favor of her knowing when to be silent (during her Japanese dramas) and how to tell the difference between eggshell and cream when it came to table linens (Valentina had fired secretaries for less). But most importantly, she knew that when it came to their Head of Security, he was an off-limits topic in anything but the professional sense unless they were alone.

"Your Majesty will be pleased to hear that your fine arts charity for high school students in Novoselic has had a 25% increase in donations this year, with several patrons attributing your gifts and galas as the cause," Daphne beamed as she interrupted her reading of Queen Valentina's unusually light schedule. But in comparison to all of the appearances she'd put in lately with Alexandre busy in Council sessions, a moment to breathe was hardly slacking. "Naturally. Thank you, Daphne. That will be all until the afternoon." She'd replied loftily, but deep down she was near to exploding from joy, both from the news as well as the laptop that rested beside her on the bed. She had important personal business to see to that morning.

Important business that was now threatened by Emelia, the Queen Mother. Just as Daphne swept from the room with a bow of the head, she'd nearly bumped into Alexandre's mother and Novoselic's past Queen. Emelia was in her seventies, kept her hair far too long (and terribly raggedy in the morning), and now had a tendency to visit her daughter-in-law during breakfast ever since Sonia was sent off to Japan for school. When the Princess still lived at home, she commonly ate breakfast with the woman, if just to spare her mother from her grandmother (or the other way round). While she was intent to savor the peace of her toast and Christie's online auctions, the Queen Mother had her usual morning plan in mind.

"Yes, please set the tray there Henri," The septuagenarian insisted, gesturing to the low table she wanted the footman to set her own breakfast tray down on before, perhaps more insistently, pointing to the TV, "And move the TV closer so I can hear. Channel 5!"

"Emelia, I am otherwise occupied," Valentina shot her mother-in-law a stern look, setting down one of her toast points. For the past week she'd been in a bidding war during Christie's annual online handbag auction with, if the username was anything to go by, was that socialite bitch from Singapore made fabulously wealthy twice over due to her high-profile skincare line and equally high-profile divorce from an airline CEO. The Queen's last six trips to Hermes' Faubourg store hadn't resulted in the Himalayan crocodile Birkin she wanted, no matter how much both the manager and Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the brand's artistic director, phoned to apologize. So now she was stuck bidding at Christie's against her Singaporean rival, who somehow still looked twenty-five at fifty, married a man at least ten years her junior, and already had three Himalayan crocodile Birkins, two of which had diamond-encrusted palladium closures (Valentina may or may not have watched her closet walk-through several times and deemed real diamonds on handbags to be tacky and reeking of 'nouveau riche'). She wasn't about to let the woman who defied the test of time add a fourth to her closet when she'd yet to obtain her first. "Must you enjoy 'Wake Up with Wanda' in my presence?"

"One should never have breakfast alone if you want to maintain your health," The older woman nagged, settling into the sofa with her own breakfast tray of oatmeal and toast. "Besides, Wanda's interviewing that handsome Pokora fellow this morning and he'll sing after!" 'Wake Up with Wanda' was the new edition, if fifteen years of hosting could be called new, of the previous morning show 'Rise and Shine with Richard.' Both shows aired on Novoselic's secondary news channel, NTV2, and primarily focused on current events, culture, and gossip. Emelia had fallen in love with it the moment Richard, when he was still young and dashing, interviewed ABBA and had promptly taken the Queen of Novoselic's call when she'd telephoned to tell the quartet how much she adored their records. A private concert later and she became one of the show's most prominent patrons for the past 40 years. Emelia insisted it kept her up to date with 'the young people.'

"You only care for M. Pokora because he covered a song by Claude Francois," Valentina quipped, hastily punching in a new number onto the Christie's website. Take that, Singapore Bitch and monster-in-law.

"Who adapted the song from The Four Seasons," Emelia was elderly but not senile, and was determined not to be outdone. She gave her daughter-in-law a triumphant nod. "Could you pass the raspberry jam? Somehow the kitchens ran out this morning and poor Alexandre, he had to have his toast with only butter before meeting the Council."

Valentina scooted to the side of her bed to hand it gently to the woman, no matter how much she wanted to chuck it at her head. At least she hadn't mentioned ABBA, her true musical love. Valentina herself had enjoyed her playing 'Mamma Mia!' over and over until Sonia, as an infant, was given a paternity test. Now she suspected the woman played it in the Queen's presence just to remind her of the plot of the ABBA musical, where the protagonist's daughter could have been fathered by three different men. Before the test came back confirming Alexandre as Sonia's father, the musical's plot was perilously close to real life. Every situation Emelia could highlight Alex's misfortunes had been capitalized on ever since. "I shall speak to Daphne about ordering more after breakfast."

"Good!" She grinned, taking another bite of oatmeal as her gaze flickered back to the TV. "Novoselic Castle should always be kept up to standard, after all."

Valentina sighed, pushing down her desire to scowl and groan at the same time. The woman had never accepted her son and his wife were in a loveless marriage with no cure. At least, for now, she was 30,000 euros in the lead for her new Birkin-

An email, sent to her personal account from Daphne, popped up as the auction entered its last three minutes. Finally letting out a groan, She opened her email to find only a URL in the body of the email, something that would take her to a Japanese site. "This better be important," She grumbled, clicking it.

It seemed to be a journal of some sort, written in Japanese with plenty of discussion about fashion and style for teenagers, popular culture, and so forth, with far too many 'kawaii' touches for her liking. Belonging to a dark-haired girl with a red bow, her content varied from her fashion to interviews, often featuring fellow teenagers likely close in age. Valentina felt her eyes glaze over until she tore her gaze from the sidebar to the first entry at the top of the page: Hope's Peak's Ultimate Princess, the Princess of Novoselic Answers YOUR Questions!

"Oh dear God," Valentina gasped, clutching the sides of her keyboard as she began to scroll. There was her daughter, bright and smiling in an outfit she'd never have let Cecily approve of for her as she chatted amiably on video with the dark-haired girl. The goal was to find the person behind the Princess and find out what being Royal was really like, according to the introduction. The Queen froze at the sorts of questions the girl's 'fans' apparently wanted to know: Did Sonia have a significant other? Did the Castle still have in-use torture chambers? How big was her closet? Nothing about her various charity work in Japan, professional appearances, or even the positive highlights of their country's history. Just glamour and gore. Exactly the sort of interview she'd been trying to fend off from Novoselic Daily News, who'd been promised Sonia's next interview once she'd finished with UK Tatler and Japan's NHK.

And if Daphne's capital letters were any indication, it was likely NDN's CEO had already gotten whiff of Princess Sonia's unauthorized interview to a complete amateur.

"What in the HELL is she thinking!?" Valentina cried, all but forgetting her precious Hermes and Emelia, reaching for her phone to fire off a phone call which, unsurprisingly, went unanswered. She had no choice: she'd have to corner her daughter by text.

I know you are ignoring me, Sonia. You will call me as soon as you receive this message unless you prefer to be put on your plane in the next hour and flown straight home.

Princess Grace's Mother Believes Something’s Very Wrong With Fashion

PHILADELPHIA - She whizzes Into the posh Germantown Cricket Club here 90 minutes late. Her carriage is erect. Her manner stately

It's immediately obvious that she's worth the wait. 

Mrs. John B. Kelly is a beautiful woman. When she whips into the club's private dining room for exclusive Globe interview and photographs, there's a flash of electricity. Everyone notices her. 

She has a dazzling smile and a personality that scintillates. The stir she causes has nothing absolutely nothing to do with the chic German-made check suit she's wearing. Or the fact that she just happens to be the mother of former actress Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco. 

The lady is a star in her own right. 

She's genteel, sparkling, aware, polished. 

She may not know it, but she exudes sophistication in a super way. Worldliness has not touched her - although she's surrounded by wealth and prestige. Her values are in perfect perspective. And she doesn't hesitate to lay it on the line. 

Mrs. Kelly charges into the interview with a clear statement of her view of fashion: 

"I don't contrive to establish a fashion image for myself. Being known as a fashion plate and nothing else is, well, meaningless. Yes, I'm fascinated with clothes. But they're not the catch-all and end-all of my life. I'm much, much more interested in health, and the well-being of people." 

What Mrs. Kelly doesn't spell out is the fact that she's an avid backer of Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia. Her interest in medical education for women is intense. She is vice president, board of corporators, of the college, and raises funds with notable zest. And she's a doer. At Spring picnics, she's the one who fries the most hamburgers for the students. 

And she's democratic, too. She knows money isn't everything. 

“I’m really not very social, you know. I have friends from all walks of life - good friends. I cherish the relationship I have with each and every one."

 Then Mrs. Kelly gets down to brass tacks and talks fashion. 

She says: "Something's wrong, very wrong, with fashion today. Silly-minded, anti-female designers are dressing women. The result is ugly. Skirts are notoriously short. Those thick, textured stockings are homely. And shoes - they're absolutely brazen. It all looks unladylike and inelegant. Too bad ... women go along with the whole business like a batch of sheep." 

On elegance: "It's being above average. Standing out in a crowd. But it's always linked to the element of good taste. You can't go around dressed fadishly or outrageously. People might stare. 

"But they won't call you elegant." 

On American designers: "They're more middle-of-the-road, more practical than Paris couturiers. New York designers know that American women have busy lives and they can't go to meetings dressed like hobby horses." 

On Paris: "This year, Grace came on from a holiday in Switzerland and we went to the Paris fashion houses. First stop was Givenchy. Grace bought - she's in the public eye and must wear couture clothes. 

Continuing: "Then we went to the hair-styling salon of Alexandre of Paris. It was mad. They don't have private booths. Just two circular sofas with clients sitting around in pink robes, waiting, waiting, waiting. French women pick up a little gossip and waste a lot of time. And the salon operators are very amusing. They wear mini skirts, lacy stockings and poufy hair. Alexander did Grace himself. And Caroline had her hair cut, too." 

More on Paris: "I don't take Paris seriously. It's too expensive. I buy clothes by American designers - Vera Maxwell and Bill Blass are two favorites. Most of all, I like quality and comfort. Everything else is secondary."��

Mrs Kelly just returned from a happy holiday at the Monaco Palace. 

While she was there, Princess Grace gave a cocktail party prior to the British American Hospital Gala - and invited theatrical personalities including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Mr. and Mrs. Alec Guinness, Lillian Gish. 

Prince Rainier (Mrs. Kelly calls him "Rainier") was cool at the prospect of meeting Elizabeth Taylor. He made his feelings clear to Princess Grace who soothed his feathers. Then Liz showed up in a sumptuous white ballgown, her hair beautifully coiffed with ribbons. 

"The prince was, in a word, 'fascinated'." 

Mrs. Kelly has very definite ideas about everything. 

She hates to waste time shopping for clothes. So she buys many things at once. She likes one shop in particular, The French Salon in Atlantic City, because the owner accessorizes the costumes and she can buy in one fell swoop. Save hours. 

She loves opulent fabrics for evening. Particularly beaded clothes from Italy. And brocades with crusty textures. All her evening clothes are luxurious. 

She often designs her own hats.

Grace mailed Mrs. Kelly a beautiful blue-green, hand-loomed fabric from Monaco. Mrs. Kelly had a local dressmaker whip up a coat and dress. Then she took a swatch of the fabric and made her own pillbox. 

Princess Grace has just established The Monaco Boutique to sell hand-made things by Monaco's elderly women. When Mrs. Kelly slips into her new costume, she's a walking ad for Monaco. 

On Grace: "She's the best dressed in our family. She has to keep up with things because she's always in the limelight. We often tell the story of Grace's real christening into the fashion world. 

"On their honeymoon, she and Rainier decided to leave the royal yacht and spend a day or so in Spain. They liked it and stayed longer, despite the fact that Grace kept on showing up in her one suit. 

“When she began to draw a crowd, someone from the hotel moaned, 'O, she's wearing THAT again.' Grace is recognized wherever she goes. She must maintain a fashion image." 

We say: Mrs. Kelly is a serene woman. This has contributed to her endless beauty and agelessness. She is a woman many could emulate. She is never static she always moves with the wave of life.

Social media hasn't only changed the way we consume fashion content; it's also completely altered how we critique it.

Whereas the opinions of established critics once reigned supreme, now, online commentators—and their contentious takes—are increasingly shifting the fashion criticism landscape. Certainly, esteemed experts—such as Tim Blanks, Vanessa Friedman, and Robin Givhan (though she's since moved on to covering the intersection of politics, race, and the arts)—are still rightfully respected for their sharp analytical talents. But some fashion lovers have noticed that from season to season, the typical commentary in the form of runway reviews or show roundups just doesn't hit quite as hard as it used to overall. To find more of the unfiltered and uncensored fashion commentary they're craving, they're turning to Black Twitter.

Those including fashion archivist Kim Daniels, stylist and Black Fashion Fair founder Antoine Gregory, and writer and archivist Rashida Renée Ward have become bona fide Internet forces thanks to their no-holds-barred approaches to fashion in the digital age. (Others, such as journalist and Perfect magazine editor Pierre Alexandre M’Pelé—better known as @pam_boy—and fashion historian Shelby Ivey Christie, are also noteworthy Black fashion critics influencing the industry on the platform, but did not respond to requests to be interviewed for this story.) Their unfiltered reactions to the industry's ongoings, whether they're posting about the latest runway show, fashion campaign, or creative director switch-up, routinely go viral. Tell me about the last foreign movie you watched in the cinema: I’m not a fan of going to the cinema (the noise, the German dubbing, the endless advertisments, always someone taller sitting in front of me...), so it’s been a while: Disney’s The Lion King back in the ‘90s. It was nice but not a movie I’d care to re-watch because the story was not my cup of tea. Actually, I was never that fond of the celebrated so-called Disney renaissance of the 1990s. If we’re talking Disney I’m either more for the classics like Lady & the Tramp or recent efforts like Maleficent, Tangled or The Jungle Book.

As to movies in general, if I hear about something interesting I usually wait for the DVD-release so that I can watch it in the original language and at peace at home.

Tell me about the last book you’ve read: Murder on the Sugarland Express which is, as the title might let you suspect, a humourous take on the Agatha Christie classic. In non-fiction, I’m currently reading a biography of Catherine the Great. The last non-fiction book I finished was The Emperor’s Private Paradise. Treasures from the Forbidden City about Chinese garden architecture in the 18th century.

Tell me about the last song you listened to: Chasing the Sun by Sara Bareilles. I love her take on harmonies and the flexibility of her voice.

Tell me about the last fanfic you’ve read: That’s a guilty pleasure I’ll keep to myself.  ;)

Favorite type of music: I like a variety of styles: rock, pop, folk, classical, ballet-scores, musicals / showtunes, soundtracks - it depends on my mood and the individual artist. It can be 19th century music, 1940s swing, ‘60s pop or last month’s release, I try anything - therefore I’m going to skip the questions for favourite artists and bands because otherwise we’ll be here all day.

Describe your personal style: Old-fashioned classic but has to be comfortable. Lots of skirts and flowing materials, high heels. Think 1950′s but thankfully we now have stretch-materials. Jeans and sweaters / shirts when I’m working with kids.

We’ve covered many, many designers that were seen at the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, hosted at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday (February 9) in Beverly Hills, California. And, now it’s time for a final sweep of the massive number of looks trotted out at this party.

Aja Naomi King: Adhering to the big, billowy gown category, Aja was radiant in this Nicolas Jebran gown in a majestic magenta hue. The colour was surreal with her complexion.

Vanessa Hudgens: While this Vera Wang dress was quite regal, right down to its royal-purpose colour, the shoulder detail really requested an updo. I felt like she entered the party before finishing her hair.

Joey King: Had this threeASFOUR Spring 2020 frock been white, we would have been calling it a lace doily. So, I’m very happy for this rich chocolate hue with matching Christian Louboutin pumps — and even happier for the bright spunk of the coral lip.

Billie Eilish: All covered up with another oversized statement, the singer returned to Gucci for this sparkly-goth look — which instantly reminded me of her Grammy Awards outfit.

Eiza González: Simple, smart, and timeless, this Galvan gown offered a stunning golden-bronze effect, so much so that she could have been the Oscar trophy herself.

Lili Reinhart: Whimsy was on full display in this Marc Jacobs Spring 2020 floral creation, styled with Pomellato jewels, that mixed a watercolor and stenciled drawing aesthetic. It was a lot of gown with the gigantic flowers and equally huge pouf sleeves, and as such, it asked a lot of the wearer. I think Lili did as best as could be expected, but it still came off as a bit forced.

Sarah Paulson: The ‘American Horror Story’ actress has a unique style that frequently adheres to a dark-quirky mystique. And, that was fully expressed in this sequined Andrew Gn gown with exaggerated collar and an ‘American Gothic’ spirit. Harry Kotlar earrings completed the look.

Emma Roberts: It’s hard to see the subtle seductiveness of this Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2020 Haute Couture lace gown, but you know it’s there — starting with the slightly sheer, exposed corset bodice and the flower brooch at the side. I love the quiet smolder of this gown, which she styled with a Pellegrino Paris bag.

Camila Morrone: From top to bottom, Camila looked to vintage allure in her styling — hair, Messika choker, opera gloves all adding drama to the Ralph Lauren Collection sequin gown.

Sarah Oh: Both feathers and sequins took top billing in this custom Cong Tri gown styled with Messika jewels.

Aubrey Plaza: Sometimes the bold shoulder works; sometimes it goes the way of ’80s prom sleeves meets quarterback shoulders. Despite the sleek refinement of the rest of this Hellessy Spring 2020 dress, the cloud puffs were just too much for me. Jacob and Co earrings with a Ruchi New York ring and Jimmy Choo clutch finished the look.

Diane Lane: I love the softly feminine tailoring of this Gabriela Hearst Spring 2020 suit on Diane. But, I don’t love the white Gabriela Hearst ‘Demi’ bag with the ivory palette of the ensemble.

Malin Akerman: Also going for a white-hot look, the actress donned an Antonio Berardi gown with front and side embellishment plus an ATELIER SWAROVSKI clutch. Perhaps it was the way she was standing, but there seemed to be some fit issues around the waistline.

Camila Mendes: With flamenco-meets-bullfighting-meets-tribal edge, this Moschino Spring 2020 ensemble was a lot of look. But, I really think Camila slayed the intriguing design that was an unexpected twist for the Vanity Fair party.

Caitriona Balfe: Had this Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2020 gown been rendered in a softer hue, I would have immediately thought it to be a bridesmaid or mother-of-the-bride dress.

Stella Maxwell: This custom Alberta Ferretti gown came outfitted with its own beading and baubles, but a few more David Yurman jewels didn’t hurt.

Mishel Prada: I’m glad Mishel wore the proper black bralette and granny panties with this embellished Temperley London dress paired with Hearts On Fire jewelry and Sergio Rossi heels. It makes all the difference.

Emily Ratajkowski: This Inamorata x Christy Rilling tube top and skirt, styled with Ana Khouri jewels, was nothing more than a vehicle by which to display her beautiful set of abs. Maybe she was headed to a beach party after this.

Mindy Kaling: This deep-plum, custom Reem Acra gown fit Mindy like a glove and I was glad for the bit of embellishment at the bodice to add some visual spark. Chopard jewels completed the look.
