Saw this interview with Alexandra Khiteeva on IG, so I ripped it and uploaded to YouTube and utilized the closed-captioning translation feature. Nothing earth-shattering in there but I did learn that 1) her mother wanted to be a ballerina but was not accepted into Vaganova, and so her mother dreamed this for her daughter. Luckily, Khiteeva also wanted to be a ballerina. 2) Anyuta was a dream role for her. 3) She was almost rejected from Vaganova because her hips are “too wide,” but a teacher at the academy fought for her, so she was accepted but had to repeat her 5th year.
Repeating that year was probably a blessing, so she didn’t have to graduate in the shadow of Khoreva, Bulanova, Niukina, and Ionova. Interestingly, her career has been the most interesting so far. Although I do hope to see Bulanova in more leading roles!

Could the Mariinsky bring back Le Reveil de Flore? This years Vaganova version did not hit the same.
Oh, absolutely! They definitely should. I mean, Khoreva, Bulanova, Savelieva, and Khiteeva are ALL Mariinsky artists—basically a dream team of ballerinas. Honestly, they should dust off the old rivalry playbook and give Tsiskaridze some real competition.

Hey Ale, if you had to guess like, 3 ballerinas from most likely to less likely to be promoted to 1st soloist at the MT, how would you choose? Khiteeva and Mazzi being the latest ones promoted to 2nd, and with the Borodulina's promotion as well, got me thinking if is too 'crowded' at the 2nd soloists rank? The only three names that come to my mind is: Lukina, Bulanova and Nuikina. The others are too new/old to the rank. And these three have a big repertoire. Anyways, I'm really curious abt this.
SO overjoyed at Khiteeva and Mazzi's promotions. They were due although I'm curious to see if they keep moving as well.
I think both Lukina and Bulanova will go up for sure, especially as people above of them slowly age out. These two have been consistently getting big roles with excellent to mild results (barring a couple disasters for each) and have had pretty consistent support. With Nuikina, while she's probably next in line, I'm less sure she's got what it takes to move up, I'm not sure she's had a shot at a leading role besides Masha.

the worse years for how underweight the students at vaganova seem to be their fourth and fifth year. In the upper school, there seems to be a sort of relaxation. I’m not saying they get healthy then, but it seems like there is a little bit more margin for weight. In addition to this I have noticed that they seem to loose weight drastically before exam, while they look slightly more normal during the year. (I’m not saying this is healthy, or normal, it’s just something I’ve noticed).
I have to say, the bodies in graduating classes look healthier now than a decade ago. I was pleasantly surprised that NT's students all look strong and feminine, I expected him to be very strict on the weight thing.
I'm personally more concerned about the body type promoted in Prix de Lausanne than in VBA the last few years. Anastasia Lukina, Eleonora Sevenard, Maria Bulanova, Alexandra Khiteeva, Sofia Valiulina are all women who, while IN NO WAY FAT, they wouldn't make it in the Prix with today's standards. The female competitors keep getting thinner and thinner as years pass.

Alexandra Khiteeva is officially the poster model for the Mariinsky’s Coppelia.
Hopefully this, alongside her new promotion, means she’ll be on the roster for the title role?

I’m an unabashed Khiteeva fan — and her recent performance in Pharaoh’s Daughter really stood out to me. I call this variation “Apsicia’s Plea,” not sure what others call it, but I saw Skorik and Tereshkina also perform this in recent IG stories. All were excellent but very different. Skorik was fierce - all pointy and angular. Tereshkina, noble and nuanced. Khiteeva is a mixture of defiant and vulnerable and the confidence of her performance really stood out. In the underwater scene variation, I saw a glimpses of Giselle. She may not have the perfect Mariinsky physique like other soloists, but she brings a good deal of artistry to the stage — and I’d like to see more!

This is perhaps my favorite video to exist on youtube! I watch it way too often lol. These students were so lucky to share a stage with the dancers from Bolshoi.
It is so difficult to even choose favorite dancers in this performance. I would say Xenia Zhiganshina and Yulia Stepanova stood out for me though. Alyona Kovalyova danced my favorite variation, and I think she did a marvelous job here. I thought it was breath-taking. She's so tall though that in the end when she does the tour jete, it low key looked like she tripped lol. I know it's part of the choreography but my heart still skipped a beat. This performance is my Avengers Endgame haha.
Ooh, also. In the mazurka, look at how tiny the 2023 graduates are. Time flies. I still find it unacceptable that I'm now older than some prima ballerinas. Anyway, take a break for an hour and make sure to watch this the whole way through! I can also compile a playlist of the variations if anyone's interested. Oscar Frame 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Conservatorie, music by H.S.Paulli) Eleonora Sevenard 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Trilby, music by Y.Gerber) Alyona Kovalyova 2016 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Roi Candaule, music by C.Pugni) Xenia Zhiganshina 2014 graduate (variation from the ballet Gretna Green, music by E.Guiraud) Olga Smirnova 2011 graduate (variation from the ballet Paquita, music by L.Minkus) Mikhail Lobukhin 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Don Quixote, music by L.Minkus) Yulia Stepanova 2009 graduate (variation from the ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, music by C.Pugni) Evgenia Obraztsova 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Pavillon d’Armide, music by N.Tcherepnin) Denis Rodkin (variation from the ballet La Source, music by R.Drigo) Svetlana Zakharova 1996 graduate (variation from the ballet La Sylphide, music by R.Drigo)

Ballet Asks Part 2
“Idk if I’m the only one who thinks so but as a general trend, the Bolshoi up and comers are much more interesting, have a lot more distinct styles and personalities than their Mariinsky counterparts - with the exceptions of Shakirova, Bulanova and Caixeta. I mean, Khoreva, Nuikina, Borodulina, Nagahisa, Khiteyeva, Lukina have zero personality and are virtually the same kind of dancer yet look where they are rn. IMO even Mariinsky dancers worthy of the roles they get (Iliushkina, Korneyev, Ionova) lack the spark and flare of young BT dancers. The Bolshoi might have some overrated dancers but they also have a TON of truly interesting young talent originating from both VBA and BBA with incredibly diverse styles.... Kokoreva, Trikoz, Efimov, Gerashchenko, Sevenard, Soares, Denisova, Poddubnyak are all memorable and extremely different from one another with wildly divergent strengths. I’m really interested in reading your comments on this, especially if you disagree with me.”
Well you have to look at where they trained.  The Mariinsky dancers you mentioned, with the exception of Nagahisa, trained at VBA.  VBA is not known for producing dancers with insane personality and excitement.  Then the Bolshoi dancers you mentioned, all but 2 trained at Bolshoi Academy, but even Geraschenko not only went to BBA for a bit, but also had Tsiskaridze who continues to engrain that personality into his students.  The same goes with Sevenard who also graduated under Tatiana Udalenkova, Renata Shakirova’s professor, and worked closely with Tsiskaridze.  Bolshoi Academy is known for engraining stage presence, personality, and unique styles into their students, that’s one of the biggest differences between the two schools.  I do honestly think that currently BBA is producing better students, but the style differences do have to do with their education.
“Confession: I hardly ever watch the Royal but Liam Scarlett’s production of Swan Lake...... galaxy brain if I may say so.”
I love so much of his production too.  There’s some I don’t like (the Swan tutus are horrific and wtf are those stupid headpieces), but all in all it’s one of my favorites too.
“If Tikhomirova was better at leading ballets, I would love to see a sequel of Don Q with her and Ruslan, street dancer and matador”
I mean, Tikhomirova does street dancer quite well.  I’m not sure what this ask is asking?
