OH LORD THIS DUDE JUST KEEPS GETTING GRODIER
oh we got sharkticons in this???
HAH fuck yeah Jawbreaker, living up to your name
I love Alex fighting too, I know it ain't really his thing but it still warms my heart to see him do it anyway for his kids
oH SHIT SPIT EM OUT, DROP IT! DROP IT!!!!
straight up I hope they shoot their way out from inside that dude
damn these sharkticons are no fuckin joke they are not letting up even a little. I'm not used to these guys being genuinely threatening lmAO usually they just kind of doofy asshole grunts
YEAAAHHH Nightshade just straight up shoryuken'd his ass
wait they like, vaporized. does this sharkticon dude have a portal in his mouth???
hey Breakdown good to see you again lmAO
oh hell yeah jailbreak time (again)
hell yeah Schloder
aw man... I mean I get why the decepticons bailed but come on y'all
interesting that energon doesn't immediately kill humans in this one, like all Mandroid did was inject some in her and it certainly caused her some pain but like. not like what happened to Raf in tfp lmAO
holy shit her ass got fucking disintegrated lmfAO fuckity bye dipshit I don't feel bad for you lmAO I did kinda want her to destroy herself by getting so desperate to kill all cybertronians that she taps too hard into self-destructive tech but getting outplayed by Mandroid works for me too. I do feel bad for Schloder though, poor guy had to watch his sister explode
well that's some kind of diversion lmAO please don't get killed Schloder, I actually like you
fhdjsk all the dancing Nightshades
I hate how smug this bitch is I can't wait for you to get owned too
oh my god I was about to be so upset that Nightshade got impaled lmAO excellent play Schloder hell yeah dude
hUH???? WERE THEY THERE THE WHOLE TIME?!??!?! I guess I was right about them getting teleported
oh god is he doing the moving base thing again
sure is lmAO or at least he's doing a growing base thing
"Rescue bots the the rescue!" shut up lmAO
uh oh, we're gonna have to fight Optimus huh
ghfdjks just casually dropping that Optimus likes (or at least pretends to tolerate) screamo metal
oh we're gonna have to fight ALL of them
gfhdjs damn Optimus heard them whispering immediately
damn, Nightshade's coming through, that was rad lmAO
THRASH JAWBREAKER HASHTAG WHERE THE FUCK DID Y'ALL COME FROM
hell yeah let's go get his ass FUCK traffic signs
man poor Grimlock getting mind controlled by Mandroid AGAIN give this man a damn BREAK
oh fuck I forgot about Megatron
oh that wasn't Megatron??? if that was the sharkticons shooting at them then where the hell is Megatron
"Tell me how to turn the weapon off!" "No. ❤️"
ah. there the hell is Megatron
tell him Thrash, you're right and you should say it
fgadjksdfgjk get hugged idiot
aww I'm glad the decepticons came through, I'm sure they're gonna love the chance to take a swing at Megatron lmAO literally Starscream goes and says it out loud
I do love that it's Twitch and Thrash specifically getting to beat this dude down, the two OG terrans
oh shit did Mandroid actually succeed??? won't his weapon kill him too if it kills everyone who runs on energon?
I guess it will, holy shit
hell yeah bring everyone back!!! ngl I thought Mo's time powers were gonna be what save the day but this works too lmAO
bro I'm fuckin jamming, this show's ost has been fire since the beginning, I have been loving this synthy music
okay but did our prime powers bring back Mandroid too
aww they get their own insignia
I gotta admit when I heard the premise of this show, kid transformers learning now to be transformers and growing up, I thought this was gonna be more along the lines of Rescue Bots where there's a little action but it's mostly just sillytimes, no we've officially got a body count lmAO this feels a lot like what mtmte's sister series was trying to be except it actually works this time lmfAO straight up not to turn this into the John Barber's writing hate podcast but having characters that actually love each other make the whole entire difference and that was just plain absent in his writing lmAO like sure some of them liked each other but nothing even close to how love is portrayed on this show. there was no real sincerity, just going through the motions of social interaction, it made every grand gesture and dramatic sacrifice feel incredibly cheap and it is so good to see the concept done right this time lmAO like I remember that after reading Robots in Disguise/the Transformers/Optimus Prime/whatever other names it had, I was so sick of reading stale human/cybertronian drama that I was thrilled that there were no humans in cyberverse and transformers one lmfAO I was fuckin OVER it but it really was just Barber's writing because I can't get enough of humans and cybertronians integrating in this show
I'm so glad this show rules lmAO I can't wait to start season 2

I could feel Ash's eyes on me from the other side of the couch. Fez's eyes are closed tightly, his chest rising in small breaths as he rests his head in my lap. Both of the boys were tired after their long day on the job, running three separate deals that were all successful.
I could tell that Ash wanted to tell me something or talk to me about something, his lips parting every once in a while in silenced words. He was starting to bug me, wishing he would just spit it out already so I could go back to focusing on our movie night that Fez's so rudely fell asleep during.
"Ash please, honey, tell me what's on your mind before you fucking explode." I plead, his eyes rolling bashfully as his cheeks warm. He just adjusts himself in his seat, his eyes flickering down to Fez before looking back to the movie.
"I been trying to think of how to fucking say it. Don't wanna sound like an idiot." He shrugs simply, my eyebrows pulling together at the sound of his serious tone. He rarely had anything serious to say to me, most of our relationship and friendship was one big joke at this point. It had always been like that since he was a small child, back when Fez and I were simply friends. "You know in this movie, the Nanny is all like, protective and shit?" He nods towards the screen, a small snort leaving me as I turn my attention back to 'Mary Poppins' that plays on the old TV. "She's like all fucking put together and is like a drill sergeant if I'm gonna be honest." He laughs, his eyes squinting as I nod, knowing that he was completely on point. "I guess, like, what I'm tryna say is that you're kind of like her." He explains vaguely, my eyebrows lifting as he watches a confused expression pass over my face. "Like, you take care of Fez and I. Better than our actual fucking parents o-or anyone else who's tried to cattle-wrangle our asses." He laughs, but my smile just grows at his sincere, genuine, and meaningful words. "You know- I know Mary Poppins don't carry a glock or nothing- and she sure as hell doesn't work with drugs-"
"Maybe she does." I interrupt, sending him a finger gun as he laughs, continuing on anyways.
"Fuck- maybe." He shrugs, his eyes flickering down to look down at his hands, his fingers trembling as he continues. "She's no you. You're pretty fucking cool and what I'm trying to say is that Fez and I are lucky to have you." His cheeks are red at this point, bashful and nervous as I coo, wishing I could get up and hug him without alarming Fez. "You don't need to get all fucking weird now. Don't make me not want to share my fucking feelings and shit." He snorts, waving me off as my bottom lip juts out.
"Ash, you're such a sweetheart-"
"Shut the fuck up."

Who would be better at relationships?
Isolation was supposed to strike fear into the hearts of the villains new hostages- (Y/N) and Alex. Yet it seemed boredom got to them first. What's a villain to do when your captives are comparing you to the Batman?
The Riddler: "Wait, no, because does the Riddler do the riddle thing all day long?" Alex asked. "Okay, but he could do our taxes for us!" You said. "Hey! Maybe you don't pay taxes when dating the Batman? Surely batman doesn't pay taxes and save the city!?" Alex replied. "Why wouldn't he!? You can't just give someone preferential treatment for dressing up in a bat suit!" You retorted. "They couldn't single him out either because no one knows who he is." Alex cut in. "Okay that's a whole other can of worms." So the Riddler, even though he can hear this pitiful excuse of a date, stayed silent. He didn't feel the need to answer. After all he knew the answer...of course he'd be the better boyfriend! Not for those reasons you pointed out, try the part where he's the most intelligent man in all of Gotham!? How has this not came up!?
Scarecrow: "Wasn't he a psychiatrist or something like that?" You asked and Alex nodded. "Definitely a doctor of some kind." Alex mused. "With that pension, we'd never have to work again." You raised your eyebrows as you spoke. "I...can't argue with that. Is that frowned upon? Marrying someone for their money?" Alex asked and you shrugged. "It's Gotham. I don't think anyone here is married for love." Alex snorted. You had a point. "Although with all that equipment...surely wait... you know Batman's equipment, like the car and all that? How's he paying for that?" You hummed. "Tax payers?" You offered and Alex snorted. Scarecrow listened in and wondered if perhaps this is what they feared. The mundane. The painfully normal life of paying bills and working. Perhaps this was all the could do to settle their growing anxiety, focus on something more annoying than frightening. Although the discussion had taken a turn. The mention of him as a boyfriend compared to the Batman was a bizarre one and showed very little self-preservation. Perhaps this was something to look into.
Two-Face: "All I'm saying is maturing is crushing on the Batman and then realising the attractive dude he's fighting would actually be the better option and treat you right." You declared and Alex laughed. "Ha! Please!" "Don't believe me? How many date nights do you think Batman has knowing his in that suit every night." You sucked on your teeth. "I'll wait!" You held out your hand. "But he is saving the city from criminals. He's saving us normies from danger!" Alex protested. "Okay so say you throw a dinner party right? You been planning it for months. Batman is gonna be like 'Don't worry, baby. I'll be there.' And BOOM! Just like that he can't be there because 'ohhhh someone blew up the orphanage and is now throwing the children off the bridge!' Well thanks hon, now my evening is in danger because you're leaving me with the bloody in laws!" Alex let out a loud laugh. "Now," You continued. "You can't sit tied to that chair and tell me a criminal like Harvey Dent isn't going to take that night off from throwing kids off the bridge because I asked for one night!" "But he's throwing kids off the bridge in the first place!?" "We all need a stress reliever Alex!" Two-Face sat in silence and no, he doesn't know where the idea of throwing orphans off the bridge came from. "I kind of want to let them go. There's some individuals who you just don't want to know." Harvey said. "We need to commit to this!" Two-Face protested. "Or we can flip the coin...heads, dump them somewhere, tails we continue the plan?" There was a moment of silence."Well what are you waiting for!? Hurry up and flip already!" Two-Face demanded.
Penguin: "The better boyfriend?" Alex repeated. "Batman or Penguin are my options?" You hummed in confirmation. "I feel like you've just asked me if I'd prefer tall or short kids." Alex retorted. You let out a booming laugh. "There is a height difference isn't there?" "Just a little bit." Alex's voice dripped with sarcasm. "Although don't you get a kind of...vibe by Penguin?" "What do you mean?" You asked. "Don't you get the impression he's a...a pimp?" Alex asked. You pondered the thought. "Does Penguin have prostitutes?" You asked. "How would I ever know that?" Alex deadpanned. "I don't know." You shrugged against your restraints. "Do you think he'd tell us if we asked?" "I am not asking him. Especially when i am tied to a chair!" Alex emphasised. You sighed. "Do you think Batman is coming for us in the next two minutes?" You asked. "I don't know..why in two minutes?" "Because the back of my knee is itchy." You whined. Alex thought for a moment. "No, the better option here is definitely Batman." Penguin said nothing but seemed to heavily chain smoke. That spoke for his silence. He was either pissed off or agitated and many were fairly certain it was down to the height comment.
Black Mask: "If I'm not supposed to look then why does his suit show the outline of his six pack!?" You cried out. "Why did they design the suit like that though!?" "Who's they?" Alex asked. "I have no idea- whoever made Batman's costume." "Oh." Alex mumbled. "I do see your point. It's hardly something you'd want to advert your eyes from." "Exactly! If you swing that way then what do we expect!? Should I compliment his perfectly carved jaw!?" Alex was silent for a moment. "He does have a nice jaw though."Alex agreed. "That's what I'm saying!" You cried out. There was a moment of silence. "Although Black Mask has some gorgeous suits." Alex added. "I really didn't want to be the one to say it, but now that you've said it I can admit it. That dude has his one six pack going on- I can feel it! He's so well toned!" "So well toned!" Alex nodded in agreement. "Don't have any clue about his face though, can't see a jaw or nothing." You continued flatly. "Isn't that Mask fused to his face?" Alex asked. You blinked. "I'm sorry?" You exclaimed loudly. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I heard that his mask is fused to his face." "S-Surely not." Your jaw hung open. Alex shrugged. "It's what I heard. He's got a lot of money though, that everyone knows for sure." "Wouldn't that hurt? Why would he do that to himself? I feel kind of bad now, must get stuffy in there during summer." You rambled but were silenced by a kick to the closed door. "Shut it!" Your eyes widened as you pursed your lips. Roman felt himself relax in his chair after hearing the henchman order the captives to be silent. Don't they ever shut up?

Detour
“Really Scott,” you say, as you run your fingers through your hair. “I don’t look familiar to you at all?” You take a mental picture of your high school tormentor’s face. Damn. ‘You’ve only gotten hotter these past few years haven’t you?’
Tumblr media
“Nah man, sorry” He states as he moves to close the door to his apartment. You give a slight rub to a small gold medallion and his body starts moving on it’s own. You stare at him with a cruel smile as he tries to wrestle control back of his body. Your face strains but you are able to force him to let you into his place. Scott, evidently, was smarter than he looks as you notice him take a mental note of your struggle and the medallion. You’re gonna have to be careful around him.
You have to admit, this is a lot tougher than you initially expected. Much like his body, man has a will of steel, and even with this necklace’s little power boost, you can only barely contain him. But you have the power of raw emotion coursing through you. Envy. Lust. Unlike Scottie over here, lady luck has not been kind to the past few years past high school. That all changed when you came across this medallion. A strange, mystical, wonderful medallion with strange, mystical, wonderful powers. As soon it came into your possession, you instantly knew the first person who would have the privilege of witnessing its power firsthand. Scott reclaimed a bit of power over himself.
“What the fuck dude! You got the wrong guy! I really don’t know who you are!” You have to hold back a bit of your hurt. All those years of agony and fear, and it doesn’t even register a blip to him. ‘Fuck it, worth it for what I’m about to get.’ With another rub of the medallion you force him to freeze.
Tumblr media
As you study his frame, still and glistening with a nervous sweat, you are overcome with a wave of lust- you can’t wait to possess the fuck out of this man. He’s only gotten bigger, beefier since the last time you’ve seen him. You are cut from your trance as you hear a soft “zzzz” sound.
His phone buzzes again and, rubbing your medallion, you force him to pull it out and unlock it for you. “Who is this?” You ask, as you take a closer look at the string of texts. “Almost back!” “Hey u wanna get some pizza tonight?” “Dude I gotta tell you about Sophie at the weights today.“
“I-It’s Alex, he’s my friend. He’s my best friend. We’re roommates. Also he’s coming back soon, so you should probably go. This-whatever the fuck this is man, I won’t tell anyone I promise. Just go” he states nervously. Try as you might, you can’t read if he’d genuinely let you go. Knowing the Scott you knew in high school, he’d probably beat you to a pulp as soon as you released your hold on him. Whatever. Not leaving anyway. You stare at more pictures of his friend from Scott’s social media. Fit, cute- hot even, easy on the eyes. Ok then, maybe a little detour is in order.
Tumblr media
“I’m gonna give you a choice.” You state plainly, as you set his phone on the table. “And I know you remember who I am, so you can stop the act. You? Or Alex? Who’s it gonna be?” He probably thinks you’re gonna kill him. Not even close. If anything, he’s gonna be getting a new lif-
“Alex, Alex! Please dude, just leave me alone!” He says without hesitation. Damn. Cold-blooded. You smile with menacing compliance.
“Alex it is.”
----
Minutes later, a sweaty Alex unlocks the door to his apartment, eager to get quick shower in and order some dinner. “Oh, uh, I didn’t realize we’d have guests”.
Tumblr media
Alex smiles warmly at you and greets you, “Hey, I’m Alex, Scott’s roommate. Good to meet you!” He looks at his hand. “Sorry, I just got back from the gym, so I’d shake your hand, b-” “So you’re Alex! good to meet you too!” you cut him off by extending your hand, which he awkwardly shakes out of formality. You use this to take a sneak preview of your future vessel’s hands. Calloused, but soft. Thin, damp. Vascular. Good.
“Yeah, I’m an old friend of Scott’s. From high school,” you lie. “He said he had to grab something from the store, so he’ll probably be back in a bit.”
“Aww well, I’m sorry he’s been keeping you waiting” Alex gives a warm smile. “He’s usually pretty good at this kind of stuff, so I’m sure he had a good reason. Do you want like a water or something?”
He starts to head to the kitchen. You stifle a moan as you quickly stick your hand in your pants and smear his gym sweat all over your dick. Sneak preview.
As he fashions himself a glass of water and glances back as you quickly take your hands out your pants before he notices. “Oh no, no! I’m alright! Thank you for the offer though!” you beam back. Close call.
‘Alex is such a nice, stand up guy’ You wonder to yourself, ‘why is he friends with that piece of shit’
“I’ve known Scott since college, so a little less than you, haha” he adds, as if hearing your mental conversation. “He always keeps it real and he’s even been helping me get toned”. He smiles and does a small bicep flex to demonstrate -hot- before he ravenously gulps down the entire glass of water and sets it down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘Fuck yeah, I can’t wait to be the one going down that tube’ you think, as you bite your lip. Alex starts to head your way. You then pick up on his scent, he smells clean- probably his cologne or deodorant. Mountains. Mint. Fresh rain. He’s like a breath of fresh air. Then the undercurrent of his scent hits. Raw, primal, alpha as fuck. You’re a bit surprised. Such a kind, clean cut guy and he apparently naturally smells like a filthy, raunchy, putrid motherfucker. You can hardly control yourself as you try to imagine where it’s coming from. Pits, ass, feet, ball sweat, all of the above?- wherever the fuck it’s coming from, it’s intoxicating. You smile in the joy that a little piece of you, even if it was just the dick that you rubbed his hand sweat all over, now smells like a diluted Alex. You struggle as you adjust your growing hard on in proximity to the pheromone bomb that is Alex.
Suddenly, Alex’s phone buzzes. You steal a glance at the sender. It’s Scott.
“Hey man, come to my room, now. We need to fucking talk. I have no idea who he is. Make sure he stays where he is. He doesn’t know I’m here .” Alex stares at his phone, a little perplexed, while you continue to stare at this fine, fine piece of ass in front of you. He gives a quick glance your way, to which you respond with a smile.
“Hey, uh, make yourself at home, ok? Im sure Scott’s coming back soon. I, uh, I gotta take care of something real quick with our, um, other roommate.” There’s only two bedrooms and he’s a horrible liar, but you still find it a little endearing. “Anyway, it was nice to meet you, maybe we can hang out sometime. Any friend of Scott is a friend of mine!“ he tells you kindly as you swoon. ‘Oh Alex we’re about to be much, much closer than friends. Closer than you can possibly imagine’.
Tumblr media
“Hey dude, uh, so Scott’s friend is waiting for you in the living room. Also whatever this is, can it wait? I kinda have to showe-“ Alex cuts himself off as he sees Scott slumped over, tied up to his desk chair with his own dirty clothes in a neat little bow. “What the fuck!?! Scott! are you ok?” Alex rushes over to help his friend.
“So, I gotta say, Scott, you made a great choice sacrificing him to save yourself. Alex is definitely a catch.” You say from the doorway. Alex quickly looks your way in horror as his best friend breaks free from his fake restraints and pulls him into an embrace.
Alex tries to squirm free from Scott’s grip, as you make Scott say the truth to his friend. “He made me choose, between you and me. I chose you.”
“T-This is a joke, right? Scott?” Scott starts to force him into his desk chair. “Cmon man!” Alex pleads, as an emotionless Scott ties him to the desk chair.
“Some best friend” you chuckle, as you stroke Scott’s cheek and wipe away a stray tear -you can feel his revulsion internally- “he sold you out without a second thought”. You start to undress his lower half, starting with his gym shoes. Fuck it was potent. “Don’t worry, I’ll never do that to us.” You peel away his sweat soaked socks and take another whiff. Alex sits in confusion, probably speechless at what had just transpired.
Tumblr media
“Let’s make a deal” you say with a chuckle. “I’ll show you a taste of me if you show me a taste of you.” Without waiting for a response, you start by kneeling down sucking on his scummy toes. Sour. Just how you like it. He’s still squirming in his bonds a little. “Step on me,” you say, as you smash your face to his sweaty feet over and over again, simulating him stepping on you. You catch a little movement in his crotch area. ‘Is he enjoying this?’ you ask, as you continue up Alex’s legs. You look back to make sure Scott is still in your control. He stands frozen, emotionless, but with a deep hatred in his eyes, twitching occasionally in his attempt to break free. You make him face Alex and force him to lift the corner of his tank top to give Alex a little tease, while you continue with your little treasure hunt.
You then peel away his compression shorts to reveal your prize. A concentrated bloom of Alex’s pheromones hit you. Ecstasy. You almost pass out on the spot. ‘Holy shit’. You can't control yourself as bury your head and greedily rub your face in his sweaty crotch. Alex is eerily quiet.
Rubbing the medallion, you issue your next command. You’re gonna need to divert a little magic to making this work, so you release some control of Scott as emotion and shouting return to him. It takes a minute or two but you’re able to get your bodies properly primed fro the next stage. You notice Alex shiver from a slight tingle in his body, while Scott continues his barrage of insults your way. “Shut up,” you command. His lips quiver and then shut. “Scottie, come tell Alex what his best friend is gonna do to him.”
Tumblr media
Alex again looks at Scott with a pleading face as a twitching, emotionless Scott continues: “Alex, I’m gonna stuff you full of himm- full of my Ma,” you wince. Strong and stubborn as ever, you can’t even get him to call you master. “Man you’re gonna love it. I sold you out to save myself. Didn’t even have to think about it. Just like that.” You’re getting a little better at controlling his movements. “Now I’m gonna be the one to make sure I put all of him inside you” Scott continues, “I-I can’t wait to see him wear you like a s-suit, parading you around, s-swimming in your skin and no one will ever know. I can’t wait to see the new you, w-with a little fag pilot tucked safe inside, pulling on your strings, speaking for you, thinking for you, loving for you” Scott finishes with an unsettling, wide grin that you force him into.
Tumblr media
Emotion and control rush back to Scott’s face. “Alex...” he states in an apologetic tone, but Alex doesn’t even look him in eye. Again, off the corner of your eye, you can’t help but notice a ghost of a smile on his face before it returns to its sullen look.
Tumblr media
“Ok, ok, enough you two. Let’s go put on a good show for our best friend Scottie”.

Lost Time II // Luke Patterson
Summary: Weeks after discovering his greatest joy Luke visits his former girlfriend to make up for the lost time. Unable to do it alone his band gives their support to find her and stand by his side as he faces his greatest regret.
Warning: Talk of death, allusion to homophobic parents, teen pregnancy and angst
Words: 3.1k
The book Midnight Club by Christopher Pike came out in 1994 but to fit this fic the book came out in 1993. Also, Alex’s last name will be Mitchell in this.
*For the sake of the story the time frame has been altered, it takes place in the mid-2000s. Also! I tried to make the reader as generalized as I could to make sure that everyone can relate. The reader is Alex’s sister, for inclusion that can be biological, adopted, half or stepsiblings. I want to make sure all people can be the reader.
A/N: Jesus I love Ben with my entire heart and I am a cruel person to have ripped Luke and Ben from each other before they had a chance. Enjoy!

Los Angeles, 1993
A sunny summer day spent outside reading a new book that had come out recently nestled in your hands under the large tree. The tree that had many tire swings before your parents caved to get a swing set. Now the tree was a companion on lovely days providing shade under the hot sun.
Alex was at band practice with the rest of Sunset Curve in the garage, or studio as Luke deemed it. More often than not, you would be in the studio watching them rehearse, but things changed, things had gotten more serious with Luke in the past six or so months. Plus, Bobby seriously was someone you wanted the least amount of time spent with.
“Hey.” Luke sighed, dropped on the faded blanket you had settled on. Raising one finger, you finished the page before placing the bookmark in.
“Hi.” You grinned leaning in as he pressed a kiss to your soft lips, “Used my Chapstick again?”
Luke hid his face in the crook of your neck, “I’m addicted to it, or it’s just your lips.”
He snuck another kiss before nudging you to adjust lay against his chest between his legs, a familiar position. One where you could read a book, and he could wrap his one arm around you while he wrote in his songbook with the other. God, you loved the boy with your entire heart.
“How’s the book?”
“It’s okay.”
“What’s it about?” Luke asked, wrapping his arms around your midsection.
“Five terminally ill teens living in a hospice tell scary stories every night. They all made a pact together that whoever died first would have to try to contact the others.” You sighed, dropping the book beside you to rest your arms on his.
“Sounds depressing.” Luke hummed, pressing a kiss to your neck, “I can think of more exciting things to do.”
“Over my dead body.” Alex snickered walking passed the young couple on his walk to the house. Reggie following after him with a laugh of his own; it was still odd to see Luke so loved up.
“I was talking about going to a concert!” Luke called out as his friends entered the Mitchell house, leaving the couple alone.
“You totally were not.” You spoke already knowing the answer as Luke nodded his head, “It’s a shock he lets us be alone.”
Turning to face Luke, you couldn’t help the blush that grew from the soft look in his eyes that you had only noticed after he asked you out. The boy had had a crush for a long time even if it was awkward given the previous thing he had with Alex.
“He’ll have to get used to it.”
“So, have you gotten a gig at The Orpheum yet?” You asked, shifting again to nestle against his side content to spend the time there in the backyard.
“Nah, we booked some smaller venues, but we’ll get there. I know it.” Luke was completely confident that one day he would be playing in the most popular venues. The other thing he was confident was his relationship.
“Where will I be?” You spoke looking at the recently turned sixteen-year-old boy who had quickly become the most important thing in your life. Never expected to fall in love with Alex’s ex-fling.
“Cheering us on. Have to have my number one supporter and wife because she’s been there since the dream began. The dream just expanded?”
 “Wife?” You breathed.
“I’m not dating you just to date. I’m dating you because when I dream of my future, you are right there next to me.” Luke admitted caressing your cheek the pad of his thumb, “Wherever in the world, we find ourselves I want you there.”
“What about kids?”
“We’ll have as many as you want. Or however many we are lucky to have.” Luke breathed growing more excited as he finally revealed his ideas and firm belief, “Of course I want to be married first. After The Orpheum I want the next thing to focus one hundred percent on is a wedding that you deserve and-“
“Ask me.”
“What?”
“Ask me.” You raised to your knees cradling his face in your hands, “That’s what I dream of too. Having a career but something that lets me travel with the love of my life and my chosen family.”
“It’s not how I want…I want it to be special and romantic because you deserve it.” Luke adamantly spoke, pressing his hands on yours still resting on his face.
“Luke. I love you. Just sitting here like we are is special and romantic.”
“Will you marry me?” Luke whispered, leaning to press his forehead on yours. The orange beanie tickling your skin.
“Yes. As soon as I turn eighteen.” You didn’t care if you had two more years to wait. As long as Luke was by your side, you didn’t care about how you got married just as long as you married him.
Tumblr media
Los Angeles, 2004
There are times that Reggie knows that the last thing people need is his goofy personality and jokes. When Luke returned from wherever he had gone, it was evident that something had drastically changed since the last time they had seen him.
“Luke?” Reggie gently spoke hesitantly moving to the boy curled on the couch, sobbing into his hands. Reggie had never seen Luke like this before, not even when it cemented that they had died and Luke’s future with Y/N shattered in a moment.
“Reg-“ Alex poofed in next going stock still at the distraught teenager. His eyes widened as he quickly made his way to Luke, “What’s wrong?”
“I-I saw Y/N.” Luke choked out, shaking his head, “I knew it would hurt, but it felt like I died again. Like I literally watched my hopes and dream just shatter before me.”
Alex was quiet taking in that Luke had seen Y/N. Alex missed his sister with everything in him, but Luke had plans.
“How is she?” Alex whispered, grabbing the hands of one of his best friends in the entire world. The one guy he had wholly trusted with his sister’s heart.
“She looks so good. God, it’s been nine years for her but only a few weeks for me. She’s more beautiful than I remember.” Luke breathed, raising teary eyes to meet Alex and Reggie’s concerned expressions, “I also saw Ben.”
“She got married?” Alex questioned surprised, “Please tell me it isn’t Bobby. I don’t think I could stomach that.”
“His name isn’t Ben and he probably tried after deciding on a respectable time for it to be okay-“
“Reggie.” Alex hissed motioning him to stop talking while Luke knew that Bobby had had feelings for you, he didn’t think he would try anything.
“I don’t think she’s married, but Ben is definitely a big part of what I missed out on.” Luke sighed, picking at a loose thread on his jeans, “I’m sure you know that in the three years, I was actually alive and with her that things happened.”
“Things like…?” Alex trailed off having a feeling he wouldn’t want to know about whatever Luke was hesitant to announce.
“Um…well we were, I am in love.” Luke grimaced at how odd it was to word his feelings for a girl he had died while planning a future, “in relationships you show affection in particular-“
“Okay as you struggle to finish that I will.” Reggie spoke, turning to Alex, “Luke and Y/N as a couple were having sex.”
Alex’s eyes went wide at the blunt statement that he never wanted to hear again in his life because you were his sister! He didn’t need to even think of anything to do other than the kissing he sometimes walked in on. He knew already but didn’t want to know either.
“I died, leaving Y/N pregnant! Which I didn’t know about.” Luke shouted poofing to the other side of the garage when he saw Alex’s fist start to clench. He poofed to the loft when Alex appeared to his last place, “C’mon man!”
“You knocked my sister up!”
Reggie’s mouth dropped at the physical aggression that Alex was showing because Alex was more peaceful and non-violent.
“I didn’t know! He’s eight!” Luke yelped when Alex grabbed him in a headlock, “Dude! I didn’t know! We were gonna get married when she turned eighteen! I love her, man!”
Reggie pulled Alex away from the lead guitarist before a fight happened, and even though part of Reggie wanted to see Alex fight…he wanted Luke here as well.
Alex was quiet, “What does he look like?”
Despite the agony of not being there for his son Luke launched into a description of the little boy.
Tumblr media
With a white lie out of Julie’s mouth, she had gotten the address from Emily and Mitch for Luke and Alex. The address led to a small house with pretty flowers and a bike in the front yard; the place where Luke’s son had been growing up in since he was two years old.
Julie’s fist raised, knocking on the white door listening as footsteps sounded on the other side of the door. The door opened, revealing a little boy with startling green eyes that he inherited from his father.
“Benjamin Lucas!” You huffed turning the corner with a frown, “You may be eight, but you are still not allowed to open the door alone!”
The little boy slouched at the greeting before his eyes met three boys behind the Peurto Rican pretty girl.
“Oh my god. He looks just like you!” Alex hissed to Luke unable to remove his gaze from his…his nephew. His attention pulled to the woman his sister had grown to be.
“Julie, right?” You spoke gently tugging Ben closer to you, “Can I help you?”
“Yeah.” Julie nodded, mumbled a thank you as you welcomed the girl into the small home you had made. It was small but perfect, “Did he get stitches?”
“Oh yeah! I guess you were there when he got hurt.” You nodded, moving a book from the couch for Julie to sit down. Your attention was on Ben as he went to the corner to play with toys, “He did. He’s kinda like my brother and his dad in that way.”
“Oh, god.” The overly familiar voice snapped your attention.
Sitting on either side of Julie were exact replicas of three boys that tragically died back in 1995, everyone froze. Even Ben looked up from the tension.
“Mama?” Ben asked, furrowing his brow.
“It’s okay Ben. Can you go to your room?” You asked, staring pale at the two people that you hadn’t noticed before. They hadn’t been visible to you at the time until they sat beside Julie. The scampering of feet and the gentle closing a door left you alone with four people.
“She can see us.”
Mutely you nodded at Alex’s statement slouching into the couch in shock, “What is happening?”
“I found a CD in my garage, and I played it. Out of nowhere, Luke, Reggie and Alex literally appeared in the room. They’re ghosts.” Julie spoke softly, “I’m not sure how I can see them, but I can.”
“Wow.” You breathed leaning back into the couch, unable to tear your gaze from the three boys, “Let me guess. Your first order of business was haunting the hell out of Bobby?”
Bobby, Trevor as the world knew, had lived up to your predictions of him being a lowlife rat boy. If you didn’t have Ben, you would have gone after him, but you couldn’t risk what little you had at the time.
“He stole our songs,” Luke grumbled crossing his arms so like you remember from years ago. He was still the passionate, caring musician you fell in love with so quickly.
“I know. I tried everything but with Ben…it was too hard, but hey he’s gotten little success from his new stuff. Guess he didn’t think of how stealing songs wouldn’t pan out.” You shrugged, twisting a ring on your finger that Luke gave you a few weeks after the spontaneous proposal.
“So Ben?” Alex questioned, leaning forward to rest his arms on his knees with great interest in the new topic.
The tsunami of happiness broke through the heavy fog of sadness when your favourite subject came around. Talking about Ben could go on for years you swore with the amount of love for him.
“His name is Benjamin Lucas Patterson. He’s eight years old and obsessed with music, they say playing classical music helps with mental intelligence. Still, he wouldn’t settle unless I played rock.” You laughed glancing over your shoulder at the closed door, “He adores Bear in the Big Blue House and Dragon Tales. Not fond of Barney or Sesame Street but he’ll still watch it.”
The guys ate it up listening to every detail of a little boy they missed even if they only recently learnt about him. Reggie was silent listening to your stories of the young boy.
“His prized possession…come with me.” You gestured turning to head to the bedroom, “I didn’t ask for a lot of baby stuff, just the essentials and anything someone could make. Sunset Curve. You guys were significant to us, so I wanted Ben to have that.”
Ben was settled playing with the cars by his toy chest barely glancing as four people came together. Julie decided to stay in the living room. With a hand, you grabbed the blanket Ben absolutely always needed. It was a homemade blanket made entirely out of clothing—one of Reggie’s flannels, a few shirts from concerts with Luke and clothing that Alex loved.
“Y/N,” Alex spoke, brushing his fingers over the worn material touched at the action of doing something so little yet powerful.
“I’m going, to be frank. After you died and I went to your fun-“ the word choked you as if you were back in 1995 sitting beside your mother wearing that black dress; a dress you burnt in the bathroom tub, “Mom found the test in my room. Rookie mistake. They weren’t thrilled about the baby and who the father was.”
“They kicked you out?”
“And Luke’s parents immediately welcomed me into their home. I owe them a lot, and Emily made this for Ben, she may not have approved of the band, but she knew it was important, so she wanted Ben to have a piece of his father’s greatest joy.”
“Mama? Can we have burgers tonight?” Ben asked quietly from his toys, “Can they stay for supper?”
Ben was shy with new people, but once he got to know someone, he was just like Luke with his bubbly and passionate personality. He was the spitting image of Luke with his hair and eye colour, but he got your nose and skin colour.
“If they want to.” You smiled, reaching over to pull the eight-year-old into your arms only wanting him to never grow up.
Alex, needing a break from the grief, wandered to a picture hanging on the wall that was a shadow box with his very first drum sticks. Underneath was Reggie’s old necklace that had to be replaced. Lastly underneath was the very first pick Luke used for the first song the band had performed.
“I’m Ben.” The boy spoke, meeting the eyes of the newcomers, “You’re the band that passed away, right?”
“Yeah. This may be confusing but Ben this is Alex, Reggie and Luke.” You replied, brushing his bangs away from his eyes. Ben returned to his quiet nature before looking at your eyes.
“That’s my family, right?”
In perfect sync, Alex and Luke started silently crying at the little boy’s words wishing that that night had never happened. It seemed at the time the right way to start the new chapter with one last street dog.
“Yeah, baby.” You cleared your throat nodding along to the innocent words your son spoke before he was wandering out of the room, “One hour of cartoons young man.”
“I’m gonna go.” Reggie spoke gesturing after the boy, “I wanna watch Cartoons.”
Reggie poofed out of the room following the little boy out of the room, leaving three sad people. The room was heavy in loss, so sad it could choke a person.
“Does Mom and Dad have anything to do with him?” Alex asked as the boys covered their grief by wandering around the bedroom. Taking in the pictures of Ben from throughout the eight years, some with you or with his paternal grandparents. Few had Alex and your parents.
“They moved a few months after you died.” You admitted, “After the way they reacted to Ben I didn’t want him in that environment. We get Christmas cards and calls on his birthday, but I don’t have the time to travel.”
Alex nodded vividly remembering the way they reacted after he had told his parents that he didn’t like girls. It was challenging since Dad was always excited for the family name to be passed down, he didn’t see that the name could continue no matter who Alex loved. Mom was more open but stepped in line with her husband instead of her hurting son.
“I’m sorry.” Luke blurted stepping closer to you, allowing you to see the ocean of tears and pain swimming in his tortured gaze, “I shouldn’t have gotten that street dog. I should have stayed with you, you weren’t feeling good.”
“Things happen for a reason, Luke.” You sadly reminded the boy, “I wish it didn’t happen, but it did, and I’ve learned to live with that. Ben has a wonderful family and a good life.”
“He knows about us too,” Luke spoke, thinking back to barely half an hour ago when Ben acted as if he knew Luke all his life. God, Luke wished he could have seen everything.
“I have videos of Ben if you want to see them.” You offered the boy, “There’s a television in the den where Ben has his baby book, and the home videos if you want. You can stay in there all you want.”
Luke nodded, playing with his fingers, “I’d love that.”
“If you want to be alone, I can take Ben for ice cream. You can have the whole house to watch alone.” You graciously offered the boy you would always love and believed before that you would see him in decades after your own death.
Luke silently nodded following as you took him to the den where it had a child-sized guitar and floor to ceiling bookshelves. A television was tucked in the corner with a video camera stored on a shelf with a VHS player. In a sealed container, the home videos were kept safe along with the baby books.
“I’ll be back in a few hours. It’s nice to see you, Luke. Really.” You told the now younger boy keeping his eyes on the opened bucket. A bucket that held all the firsts he had missed out on a little boy he had loved since first seeing him in his family home weeks ago.

Pretty Little Picture (1/3)
fake dating au, pure fluff, no serious tags, just a bunch of fluff

When Alex agreed to this, he thought it’d be a piece of cake.
“You’re going to regret this, it’s a horrible idea,” Liz said through the phone as he walked around his room, packing his bag for the weekend. He furrowed his eyebrows.
“Why? We’re friends. And I’ve done musicals and stuff, I’ve acted before.”
“Okay, but this isn’t acting. This is going on a weekend getaway pretending to date your friend who you have a crush on is a bad idea,” she scoffed. Alex shook his head, looking between his plain black button-up and his plain black fitted turtleneck. He chose the turtleneck one and folded it carefully.
“I don’t have a crush on him.”
“Really?”
“Really. Trust me, I’ve seen him after pulling an all-nighter and falling asleep in his coffee. I know not to have a crush on him,” Alex said. Though he will admit, that was pretty cute.
“Sounds like something someone with a crush would say,” Liz scolded. Alex snorted a laugh. “Fine, do what you want, at least you’ll be believable with the heart-eyes and everything.”
“I do not have heart-eyes!”
Truly, Alex was sure it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. He lived with Michael already. They shared the house he inherited‒Michael needed a cheap place to live while in college and Alex wasn’t really looking forward to living alone, so it worked out‒and nothing weird had happened in the last three years. They were best friends, what would one weekend hurt?
“Alex, I need your help,” Michael had said, bursting into the living room and nearly making Alex spill his coffee. He stomped towards him, dropping his bag on the ground and flopping onto the couch with a pathetic whine. “Help me.”
“Help you with what?” Alex had asked in return, taking his eyes off his laptop to give him his full attention while he threw a little tantrum.
Michael twisted onto his stomach and rested his chin on his hands, looking up at him. Alex’s heart absolutely did not skip a beat in adoration. He wasn’t that cute.
“You know my internship? The fancy one with all the rich people that pay me to be an intern for them and actually listen to my ideas and‒”
“Yes, Michael, I know about your internship,” Alex laughed. Michael pouted just a little bit.
“Okay, so every year, the CEO takes all the interns and entrance-level employees and their partners on a trip for Valentine’s day and it’s a fun trip, I guess, but it’s really just this big, super informal interview where he and his wife sort of see if you’ll be a good fit for the company long term. Khalil said I have to go no matter what, that it’s super crucial and to make a good impression. Like, I have to go, Alex. I have to get hired for real after I graduate. Do you know how much I’ll get paid just to start? $35 an hour, Alex! I could do so much with that money!” Michael explained, exasperated and overwhelming as if Alex hadn’t heard how much money he would make if he got this job a billion times.
“Yeah, okay, then go,” Alex told him, “Sweet talk them like we all know you can.”
“I need a partner, though,” Michael said, pouting all over again, “So come with me. Please? We can pretend to be, like, long term boyfriends and, like, convince them I’d be a good queer diversity hire at the very least.”
Alex felt his cheeks grow warm at the suggestion and shifted in his spot. “Why me?”
“Because! You were raised around a bunch of bougie rich white people, you know how to act at these things! I’d ask Isobel or Max, but I don’t even wanna pretend to be in love with them. With you, I can do the whole starry-eyed thing and if we have to show PDA, it won’t be that big of a deal because, like, it’s you,” Michael persuaded, clambering onto his hands and knees before putting his head on Alex’s arm and pouting up at him, “Pretty please? I’ll buy you something nice and fancy with my first big kid paycheck.”
“Okay,” Alex agreed, not letting himself think too much about it. They spent all their time together anyway. He’d fallen asleep with Michael’s feet in his lap, he’d seen him basically naked, he’d hugged him and gotten platonic head kisses from him. They could pull it off.
“Okay?” Michael repeated, sitting up more. His smile was shining and bold and Alex had to take a breath. “Okay! Okay, so we have two weeks to pack and come up with stories and shit to tell. It’ll be so easy, they’re gonna love you, you’re so chill. Thank you, Alex, thank you so much.”
Which led to now when Alex was preparing to go on this trip. From the way Michael explained, it would be a lot of just talking and discussing with a side of couples retreat-esque activities.
“He’s apparently superfamily and relationship-oriented. I don’t know if it’s because he’s, like, super conservative or if he’s super progressive and is all for, like, living wages for family and will give people ample time off. I’m too scared to ask just yet,” Michael had explained.
Michael had also assured him that, during discussions, he could either sit with him or go talk to the other partners, whichever he preferred. He basically just needed Alex to look pretty and seem like they were totally in love. According to the way Liz spoke about them, it wouldn’t be a difficult feat.
So Alex packed his clothes and anything he thought he’d need to get by on a three day trip to some bed and breakfast in the middle of nowhere. He wanted to look nice the whole time, even when they weren’t at formal dinners, and he was even going to flip his septum piercing. He planned to use his skills at selling himself to sell Michael as well.
“If you ever need a break, I’ll cover for you while you drive to the nearest convenience store to get a bunch of snacks,” Michael told him as he threw their bags in the backseat of Alex’s little car. Alex snorted a laugh.
“What about if you need a break?”
“Well, I plan to work for this fucker for at least the next thirty years, so my only break will be sleeping,” Michael said. Alex shook his head, going over to fix the collar of Michael’s shirt. It’d taken a bit of convincing to get him to forgo the flannels for a couple of days, but now he had a collared shirt that wouldn’t stay down for some reason. “Speaking of, are you gonna be chill sharing a bed or do I need to sleep on the floor? I don’t mind it, just wanna know if I should ask for an extra blanket.”
“Dude, we’ve shared a bed before,” Alex laughed, “It’s not gonna kill me.”
“Just making sure,” Michael said, taking a deep breath. It was only then that Alex realized that he was actually nervous.
“Hey,” Alex said, grabbing his shoulders and looking him in the eyes, “You’re going to impress the hell out of them, I’m gonna make sure of it, okay?”
“I just really want this job, Alex,” Michael said. Alex smiled.
“And you’re going to get it,” he said, “And, hey, if you don’t, this internship will always look good on your future resume.”
“Let’s just stick to telling me I’m gonna get it, okay?” Michael breathed. Alex laughed and nodded, patting him on the shoulder before shoved him gently in the direction of the passenger seat.
“You’re going to get it. Now get in the car.”
The whole ride there Alex was completely fine. This was going to be a piece of cake and he was going to show Liz that he could totally handle it. He didn’t have a crush, he wasn’t going to catch even more feelings, he was just being a good friend.
It didn’t really dawn on Alex just how stressful this weekend was going to be until they stepped inside the bed and breakfast and Michael looped an arm around his waist and tugged him in close. He knew they were going to be showing casual PDA, Alex agreed to that, but saying it and doing it in private was a whole different world to having Michael hanging onto him in front of other people.
Alex could hear his heart in his ears over the ringing, suddenly very aware of the fact that Michael was muscular. He knew he did a lot of manual labor jobs before he got that internship, but had he always been obvious about it?
Even then, Alex was able to smile through it as Michael led him up to the group of people that were already there. He was able to keep his feet under him as Michael leaned up to his ear to whisper a ‘you got this’. Alex was even stable as he shook the hand of the man whose suit was probably more than Alex’s inheritance.
“This is Alex,” Michael said, smiling over at him like he was the most important thing that ever existed, “My boyfriend.”
Well, shit.
Maybe Liz was onto something.
-
No, honestly‒Alex was fine.
Michael was charming, he knew that. He’d seen him with girls and guys he liked, he always laid on the charm thick and so it absolutely made sense for him to turn it on Alex. He just wasn’t used to it, that’s all. He just needed to adjust and then it’d be all roses.
“Alex, have I mentioned today that you’re my favorite?” Michael hummed as they went into their little room. Alex finally felt like he could breathe and tilted his head at him, raising an eyebrow. Michael was grinning with his back pressed against the door. “You’re incredible. They like you. Ivan laughed at your joke‒he never laughs.”
“Well, I’m glad you picked the right suitor,” Alex laughed, rolling his shoulders as he sat down on the bed. His back was facing Michael, finally, and he used it to close his eyes and count to three.
Michael was charming, simple. And, honestly, Alex was on the receiving end of it the more he thought about it. Just not in front of people. That’s what made it feel like so much. The audience. He’d never been so loudly out in front of that many people before. That’s what it was.
“The best,” Michael insisted.
The bed creaked under his weight as he crawled across it and Alex was only able to prepare himself for the weight to be draped over his back because he was used to Michael being clingy. Just… in private.
“Hey, you okay?” Michael asked after he was quiet for a second too long.
“Yeah,” Alex breathed, “I’m fine. Just never proudly stated I was into guys in front of that many people before.”
“Oh,” Michael said, pressing against his back just a little more, “Good feeling or bad feeling?”
Alex didn’t answer quickly enough.
“Alex, if you want to go home, then‒”
“No, this is good. I feel good. Just overwhelmed,” he explained. It wasn’t a lie.
“Okay, fair enough,” Michael said, kissing his temple before throwing himself backwards onto the bed, “I swear, it feels better after the overwhelming feeling goes away. None of them are gonna say shit to you either.”
Alex nodded and laid back on the bed beside him, looking over at him. They had to get ready for one of their informal discussions and dinner, but it sounded like a good idea to just lay there for a moment. The longer they laid there, the more he was able to realize this wasn’t going to be too bad. In fact, he was going to have fun with it.
In an actual relationship, he wouldn’t want to show a lot of PDA or be super touchy. But this wasn’t an actual relationship. He could just be a little extreme for the fun of it. He was going to school to perform. Why not try his hand at acting?
Bonus points if Michael got flustered.
“Okay, I’m good,” Alex said. Michael turned his head and they locked eyes, a smile on his face.
“Good,” Michael said, shifting onto his side, “But if you start feeling overwhelmed again, you can just squeeze my hand. We’re boyfriends for the weekend, so it doesn’t matter if they think it’s gay.”
Alex huffed a laugh, turning onto his side as well.
“Do they actually know you’re bisexual or is this like your coming out and you’re just letting them think what they want?” Alex wondered, “I saw a couple of shocked faces.”
“Some people know, mainly the people I talk to every day, but I don’t try to hide it. I think most of them thought I was straight until Callie was showing Emily some picture of a hot guy and I said I wanted to see,” Michael said, grinning in that way that told Alex he’d done it purposefully to get a shock out of some people.
“Oh yeah, how’d that go?”
“No one really said much, the girls laughed. Khalil breathed like a sigh of relief because they thought they were the only queer person working there,” Michael said, scooting closer, “I think there’s probably a couple more somewhere are the office. It’s a big place, there’s gotta be.”
“Mm, but we’re gonna be basically the only same-sex couple this weekend, right? I didn’t see anyone else while we were down there,” Alex pointed out. Michael nodded.
“Yeah, sorry. But only for a couple of days! It’s already Friday afternoon and we’re leaving Sunday afternoon, it’ll be fine. Plus, you got me,” Michael said, reaching out to poke Alex in the side, “I’ll make it worthwhile.”
Alex found himself smiling just a little.
“Yeah, I know you will.”
They both eventually got up and got dressed. Alex broke out the turtleneck and some relatively tight black slacks, drawing on fresh eyeliner. He pulled as much of his hair back as he could into a small low ponytail and deliberately made his bangs and everything hanging down a little intentionally messy.
This was a performance and he was going to sell it easily.
When he came out of their bathroom and into the main room, he saw Michael was in a pair of chinos and a maroon button-up that he was sure Isobel had gotten for him. He was just fastening his belt when Alex made a show of leaning against the doorframe as he whistled low.
“Well, well, well, don’t you look good,” Alex said. Michael looked up at him with a shit-eating grin, hands fumbling as he tried to tuck the end of the belt into his belt loops.
“I bet I smell better, Isobel got me fancy cologne,” he said. Alex huffed a laugh.
“Yeah, I can smell it, it’s nice,” he said, pushing off the door frame and walking closer, “You wearing real shoes, or am I going to have to publicly break up with you for wearing cowboy boots?”
Michael rolled his eyes and reached out to grab Alex by the waistband of his pants, tugging him in. Alex’s eyes went wide as he laughed at the forwardness.
“I’m wearing shoes, the fancy ones that are pointed at the end and click when you walk,” Michael said. Alex grinned and put the back of his hand to his forehead.
“I’m swooning.”
“You should.”
Michael let him go and went to go slip on his shoes while Alex went to his combat boots‒much more situation-appropriate than cowboy boots and he would stick by that. They gave each other another once over of approval before leaving their room.
“Those boots make your ass look great,” Michael said as they headed towards the elevator. Alex’s eyebrows shot up and he looked over his shoulder. Michael flashed an innocent smile. “What? You’re my boyfriend, I can look at your ass, right?”
“If I can look at yours, boyfriend.”
“I’m begging,” Michael said warmly as they stepped into the elevator. Alex shook his head and pressed the ground floor.
Because, of course, this was what it would be like to be with Michael. Flirting, banter, touching. No wonder he had so many people wanting to be with him. Hell, Alex got a decent taste of it and they didn’t even like each other like that. Though, it definitely helped him understand where all of Liz’s concerns came from.
“You really are feeling better, right? Like, don’t let me do anything you’re not comfortable with. I’ll try not to, but, you know, slap me if I do,” Michael insisted before the elevator doors could open, sincerity dripping from his tone.
Alex held out his hand as the doors opened.
“I’m fine.”
Alex was able to make that statement even more true as they started socializing and he managed to snag a flute of champagne. It tasted expensive, just like the shit he and Kyle would sneak at their parents’ parties. It was easier to loosen up when pretending that’s what this was.
“Michael, Alex!” Curtis called as he neared, a big smile on his face and a gorgeous woman on his arm.
Curtis was the CEO of Disionic, a company that specialized in doing work for other companies’ prototypes. Companies of all sorts would use Disionic to outsource their new and fancy inventions for all sorts of different things, from engine-powered toys to ad blocking apps to literal blenders, as a way to test run them and get credible feedback from engineers and usually would employ them to fix any mistakes that were made. Michael loved it, it was a constant stream of new things and it made big money.
The fact that he made a point to know all the interns' names was simply a plus.
“You two look like the perfect pair,” he said, looking between the two of them with a warm smile. Alex raised his eyebrows at Michael and offered a smile.
“Thank you, Mr. Iverson,” Michael said, nodding to the woman on his arm, “Mrs. Iverson.”
“Call me Jeannie,” Mrs. Iverson said, holding out a hand. Michael shook it firmly and Alex did the same. “So, I’ve heard about Michael, the agricultural and mechanical double major from Berkeley, but I haven’t heard about you. What do you do, Alex?”
Alex felt Michael take a deep breath, a silent ‘oh God, am I good enough that he told his wife about me?’ and he tightened his hold around his waist. Alex gave his award-winning polite smile that did wonders when he took etiquette classes back when his father thought dressing him up in a suit around other boys in suits to learn about how to act right would make him less likely to be a raging homosexual.
“I actually go to SFSU for right now,” Alex said, “Music major.”
“Oh!” she said, and Alex had already predicted her words before she said them because it’s what people always said, “That’s cute!”
“Mm,” Alex hummed, taking another sip of his champagne, “My major is piano education, but I also take vocal classes as more of a minor.”
“Oh, good, you’ll be able to do a lot with that. And it’s not that far from Michael’s school,” she said. He nodded, looking towards Michael.
“Yeah, we live somewhere in the middle,” he said.
“That’s good that he’s with someone who’s also focused, it’s a good environment to be in for a boy his age with his promise,” Curtis insisted. Michael went a little weak in his grasp and Alex didn’t have to be a genius to know it had everything to do with a grown man caring about his promise.
“I think so too.”
After moving on from Curtis, Michael was able to regain his legs and his brain and Alex didn’t have to carry too much of the weight‒literally and figuratively. They sat and had dinner, all paid for by the company, and then got back to socializing. It was honestly a bit draining, but Alex kept reminding himself it was just for the weekend and it was for Michael and also that most of the people there were winging it just as much as Michael.
“So, how did you two get together? I know Michael said you were roommates before things got started, so that must’ve been a risky move,” Alisha‒Michael’s coworker’s wife of two months who wouldn’t let either of them forget how sad it was that they couldn’t make it to the wedding as if they’d known either of them long enough to be invited in the first place‒asked. She was kind and all, but she asked a lot of questions. Alex was waiting for her to ask something that was too invasive to even justify a polite answer.
Honestly, some of them already felt too invasive, but Alex knew that was probably him just being touchy.
“Oh, I just got up the courage to ask him out one day and hoped it wouldn’t be weird. I mean, look at his face. It was impossible not to catch feelings,” Michael said. Alex rolled his eyes and leaned into his side, playing it up to the best of his ability. It helped that the champagne he’d been sipping on had made him a little more comfortable.
“Stop it.”
“I’m serious! I couldn’t help myself. I just wanted a chance to look at the stars with you and know you were mine,” Michael cooed, pressing his nose into Alex’s cheek and nuzzling just a little. Alex’s ears were ringing a bit as he turned his head to look at him up close. They locked eyes for a moment too long before Michael cleared his throat and looked back to Alisha. “So, yeah, couldn’t pass up the opportunity.”
“How cute, I wish straight men were that romantic,” she cooed, just tone-deaf enough to level Alex’s thoughts, “Have you talked about marriage? I’d love to come to the wedding, it’d be so fun.”
“Not really, yet,” Alex said, pinching Michael’s hip just enough to make him jump, “But I figure one day I’ll get him on one knee.”
“What, you won’t propose to me?” Michael said, trying to put but failing through his smile. Alex cupped his ear in his hand, running his thumb gently along the curve of it. If Michael’s eyes drifted to his lips, well, Alex pretended he didn’t notice.
“Maybe I just like seeing you on your knees,” Alex said. Michael’s eyes widened.
“Oh, dear, I feel like I’m intruding,” Alisha giggled and Alex blinked out of it.
“Sorry,” he said, “Just teasing.”
“I totally get it! Me and my Tom get like that all the time.”
“Speaking of your Tom,” Tom said, sidling up beside her and looping his arm around her waist. She smiled up at him. “Emily wanted to see your ring.”
“Oh! Okay, see you later, guys! I had fun talking to you,” Alisha said, waving as she let herself be tugged off to wherever Emily and her boyfriend were.
Alex let out a breath of relief and raised his glass to his lips. Mid-sip, Michael leaned in close to his ear, lips nearly pressed against his skin. Alex focused on his drink.
“You’re gonna do something stupid like make me fall in love with you,” he breathed, leaving a kiss on his cheek before he pulled back.
“Ah, a tragic mistake many men have made,” Alex said playfully. Michael beamed at him.
“Seriously, you’re amazing, Alex. I’m so glad I brought you. You even managed to make Alisha bearable,” Michael said. Alex laughed and looked over to where Alisha was proudly showing off her ring.
“She’s not that bad.”
“You haven’t met her as many times as I have,” Michael huffed, “I was terrified when I saw her comin’ this way. She means well, but, you know.”
“The straights just aren’t as romantic, Michael, don’t you know?” he said. Michael laughed and squeezed his hip. “But are you good? You’re starting to look a little drained.”
“I’m gonna start lookin’ for a way out so we can go upstairs. My people tolerance is dropping,” Michael confessed. Alex nodded.
“Well, you’re doing really well. I almost didn’t notice.”
“Hopefully no one else will.”
“No one else knows you like I do, so I’m assuming you’re good.”
Michael tilted his head, that little smirk on his lips as he said, “You know me so well, huh?”
“I do live with you,” Alex pointed out. Michael nodded and his eyes went to the flute of champagne in his hand.
“How many of those have you had?” he asked. Alex shrugged, swirled it around a bit before downing the rest.
“Three, maybe four. Yeah, four, one before dinner, one during, two since,” Alex explained. Michael nodded.
“Feelin’ good?” he asked. Alex hummed and nodded, looking over Michael’s face easily. “I’m not a champagne man.”
“Neither am I, but this shit is too expensive not to drink.”
Michael laughed, “Guess I’ll have to taste it.”
“You will.”
Alex’s eyes drifted to his lips, not for the first time. He started wondering what he actually looked like on his knees. Then he shook that thought right out of his head.
“I’m tired,” Alex said, maybe a bit louder so other people would hear. Michael grinned.
“Okay, let’s make our rounds in saying goodnight.”
They said goodnight to Michael’s coworkers that they passed on their way to say goodnight specifically to Curtis and Jeannie. It was an absurd amount of small talk, very ‘oh, yeah, we were up early, Alex had class’ and ‘it’s a long day, want to be fresh in the morning!’ and ‘you know how it is, can’t wait to get this one alone, haha!’ It was all tragically boring and as he got closer to when he’d be free of it, Alex began to itch to get back to their room.
By the time they said goodnight to Curtis and his wife, they were basically speed walking to the elevator. Once the doors closed, Michael tugged Alex into a hug, burying his face into his neck and Alex giggled, feeling light as he draped his arms around his neck. Michael lifted him off the ground for a moment, until the doors slid open.
They made it back to their room and Alex didn’t have a moment to process anything before the door closed and Michael was closing in on him. He grabbed his face in between his hands, staring at him with the biggest smile. Alex was probably a little too drunk for this.
“You are so fucking good at this, I could kiss you. The flirting, the touching, the lines? Alex! You’re a genius, a pure genius. I knew they’d like you, but they like like you. You are so good, Alex Manes,” he gushed, peppering kisses to his forehead and his nose and his cheeks. By the time he pulled away, Alex’s face was on fire and he was smiling so wide it hurt.
“I’m just selling it,” Alex said.
“And you are doing a damn good job. I should date you more often,” Michael said. Alex nodded lamely and Michael laughed, grabbing his hand and pulling it to his mouth. He pressed a kiss to the back of it. “I am going to go take a shower, boyfriend. You start trying to sleep off that champagne, okay?”
“Okay.”
Michael dropped his hand and turned, stepping out of his shoes on the way to the bathroom. Alex let out a breathy laugh and sat on the edge of the bed. He slowly pulled his hair down and pulled off his boots, taking a deep breath. He licked his lips and turned his head to the bathroom door, head swimming with too many thoughts as the water kicked on.
Alex changed out of his shirt and his pants into sweats and a t-shirt, climbing into bed without much thought. He tried not to think, at least. He closed his eyes and tried to lull himself to sleep.
But, when the bathroom door opened, he couldn’t help himself.
Alex peeked over the edge of the blanket and watched as Michael, dripping wet with just a towel around his waist, searched for his clothes with nothing but the bathroom light to guide him. He was gorgeous and overwhelmingly… Michael. Alex couldn’t remember the last time he wanted something so bad as he wanted to touch Michael at that moment.
At the thought, he pulled the blanket over his head, his eyes going wide.
Oh.
Oh no.

Note
Honestly... Willie and Alex need a child.
Well they maybe don’t need a child. At least not at the present moment, and if its within the canon of them being ghosts. It would be cool if they’re older and in an AU that they adopt a child.
But if we’re going by them as ghosts, I could definitely seem them taking in a ghost kid later on.
Imagine how traumatic it would be for this kid to have died so young and can’t go back to their family.
Willie would stumble on the kid walking around the streets, looking so lost and upset. When they locked eyes on Willie as he drew near, his stomach dropped. If they could see him then...
“Hey kid,” He hopped off his board and kneeled in front of them, “What’s up?”
And then the kid would be shy at first. Their parents did tell them not to talk to strangers. But their parents were nowhere to be found... they couldn’t even seem them when they tried going home. Why couldn’t they see them...?
Willie could sense the kid’s panic and tried to put them at ease. He took them to various spots around town to hopefully keep their mind of what was troubling them.
Not a total fix, but Willie died young. He got it. But he couldn’t imagine what it would be like to be this kid’s age and being on their own.
He was going to do his best to entertain the kid until he figured out a way to give them a home.
He took them to the playground, pushed them on the swings and helped them out on the monkey bars.
He took them to the movies. (It broke his heart to not get them any popcorn or candy. The kid was having a hard time grasping that they couldn’t eat anything anymore).
By the time the movie ended, Willie knew he had to get the kid off the streets and somewhere more suitable. And even though Caleb was gone and the HGC was under new management, a club was no place for a kid...
So that was how he ended up at Julie’s (the first time the kid poofed -“Can we do that again?!”)
By then the kid was comfortable with Willie and he was able to scoop them up into his arms as he knocked on the door.
Reggie opened the door and greeted them, “Hey dude,” then he noticed the child in Willie’s arms, “And little dude.”
Then his eyes widened, and his gaze bounced between the two of them, “Oh,” he uttered, once he realized.
His smile dimmed slightly before he quickly ushered them inside.
Alex was the only other person in the studio. Luke must have been in the house with Julie. The drummer was on the couch when they walked in.
“Hey Willie,” Alex quickly rose to his feet once he noted the kid, “Hey, uh, who’s this?”
“A new friend,” Willie set the child down, “This is Alex. And the guy at door is Reggie. They’re my friends. They’re nice.”
The kid nodded and waved shyly at the other ghosts.
“Hey, Hot Dog. Can we talk?”
“Sure,”
Then Willie left the kid in Reggie’s care and the bassist proceeded to draw pictures with them, “I’ll be right back.”
Willie and Alex poofed up to the loft so Willie could still keep an eye on the kid.
“Are they-?”
“A ghost. Yes,”
“Damn,” Alex glanced over, “How old-?”
“Doesn’t matter anymore, does it?” But the truth was Willie didn’t ask. He didn’t want to know.
“So what are we going to do?”
Willie fumbled with the zipper of his windbreaker, “We?”
“Yeah, we. Or were you gonna hand them off to someone else?”
He shook his head, “No. I don’t think I could trust anybody else with them at the moment.”
“Ok,” Alex could hear Reggie and the kid giggling about the pictures they were making and he smiled, “You know I’m going to have to ask Julie. But I’m sure she would say yes,”
“If it gets too much for you, for them to be here. I’ll find somewhere else. This could be a temporary solution, until we figure something out,”
“You like them, don’t you?”
“They’re growing on me...”
Alex places his hands on Willie’s shoulders, “Then they’re staying here. Me and the guys, we know better than to turn someone away in need of a home.”
“Thank you, Alex,” Willie smiled, “I’ll always be around to help. Just because it’s your place doesn’t mean-”
“Why can’t it be yours too?” Alex blurted out.
Willie stopped, “You... want me to move in? With you?”
“Y-Yeah. I mean, me and the guys. And Julie. But... yeah,” The blonde stammered, rubbing the back of his neck nervously, “I mean, so you can take care of the kid too,”
“That’s 5 ghosts in a garage. Are you sure Julie’s going to be cool with it?”
“Please. The second she takes one look at the kid, she wouldn’t say no. And besides, she likes you too. She says you don’t cause trouble,”
“Did she forget about the whole ‘getting-you-stamped’ fiasco?”
“You landed us a gig at the Orpheum... she knows you’ll do everything you can to fix it,”
“Thanks...” Willie blew out a sigh, “And... yeah. If you want me to-”
“Yeah, for the kid-”
“-right. For the kid. I’ll move in,”
Alex beamed, “Wow. Great. So, uh, welcome to the garage then,”
Willie returned the sunny expression, “Now let’s go tell the kid the good news,”
They poofed back downstairs to Reggie and the kid struggling to hold in their laughs, their pictures hidden behind their backs.
“What’s going on?”
The kid whipped out their drawing, “Look, I drew you and Hot Dog Man!”
And fair enough, there was a crayon drawing of Willie on his skateboard and Alex with his fanny pack. Willie could see that there was a hot dog peeking out of the fanny pack as well.
Willie looked at Alex, raising an eyebrow, and the blonde was trying so hard not to groan at another person adopting his embarrassing nickname. But he smiled and knelt down in front of the kid, inspecting the drawing.
“This is amazing. A masterpiece. Don’t you think so too, Willie?”
“I agree. This artwork should be displayed,”
And true to Alex’s word, Julie met the kid the following morning and loved them instantly. Luke too. Already itching to play with the kid and teach them music.  They all were.
The kid not only got Willie looking out for them, but everyone.
But the kid was closest with Willie and Alex, because they spent the most time with them.
When Willie was busy helping new management run the club, Alex was the one taking care of the kid.
Alex, already the mom friend of the group, was the one to set up rules and gave the kid some structure in their life.
He would scold Luke for jamming past 9pm because that would be the kid’s bedtime (”Ghosts don’t sleep, Alex” “They need to rest! Let them have some sense of normal, guys”).
And he was adamant in continuing the kid’s studies and got everyone involved.
Reggie would be in charge of teaching them some math. Julie would go over some science books she had from elementary school. And Luke would teach writing and reading.
Alex held the fort down at home, but Willie was the one to take the kid out around town a lot, exploring all parts of LA.
The kid loved art, so Willie was stoked to bring them to the museum that he took Alex to.
(And they screamed there too, but the kid was now under the impression that it was acceptable to scream everywhere. And Alex was cross with Willie for a while after that...)
Willie even taught them how to skate, but was super protective and made sure he got them proper gear and a brand new helmet (”Willie, they’re already a ghost. They don’t need-” “It’s part of the learning experience...”).
But how proud Willie was the day the kid was able to balance on the board on their own.
And sometimes, Willie and Alex were able to take the kid out for the day together. And they would usually go to the beach.
Once, the kid ran ahead and started kicking the waves that crept up the shore and Willie chased them. The skater picked them and spun them around, and Alex remembered his heart swelling at the sight of the two of them together.
“Hot Dog Man! Help me!” The kid giggled as Willie playfully captured them and tickled them.
Alex ran up and grabbed the kid from Willie’s hold, “I’ve come to rescue you!” He set them down before telling them to climb on his back, “I’m now your noble steed. Let’s go!”
Willie smiled fondly seeing Alex giving the kid a piggyback ride and ran along with them, howling as the cold waters reached up and drenched their feet.
It wasn’t easy, practically raising a kid. There were definitely difficult moments.
But with Alex at Willie’s side, and Willie at Alex’s- it made it all worth it.

Whatever Happens I'ma Stand Tall- Jatp time loop au, Chapter 1: Loop 1
And here we go! This is an idea I've had brewing for a while and I'm finally starting it! Part of this chapter does come from the episode Stand Tall as set up for the story. Some chapters will have multiple loops and some will have one. Also, just a quick warning the guys do get jolted out of existence/die but it's temporary and the premise of the story. Since this will be multi chaptered, anyone who wants to be a part of a tag list can just send me an ask and I'll add you for next chapter.
Word Count: 1511
Masterpost of chapters (x)
Looks like today is gonna be another sunny day, with temperatures in the low to mid eighties.
Julie goes to shut off her radio alarm and takes a deep breath. Today was the day. If everything went well, they were going to play the Orpheum, her phantoms would cross over, and they wouldn’t be destroyed by those horrible jolts.
It was fine.
She was fine.
She got dressed, took a deep breath, and went out to face the day.
The rest of the day passed in what felt like a blur, one thing quickly happening after another; the guys securing their performance, the exciting phone call she got when they got back, rushing to her dad to tell him about the gig they she secured, the band hug in the studio, the nervous car ride to the Orpheum, the anxious waiting, the breakdown in the alley realizing they weren’t coming, the exhilarating performance when they did, it’s a wonder she didn’t fall asleep on the car ride home.
After making an excuse to her father and brother, she made her way to the studio. She needed to say one final good-bye.
She opened the doors and stared into the dark room that had held so much life these past couple weeks. A room that once held the smiles and songs of her mother, but now held the smiles and songs of her new family. In the darkened room she could still see Luke's beanie thrown on the couch, Alex’s drums shining in the moonlight, and the floating chairs her mom had hung up with Julie one afternoon that Reggie had pointed out on his first day here.
She took a deep breath before saying, “I-I know I already said this, but, uh, thank you guys.”
“You’re welcome.”
There was a collective sigh followed by, “Dude”
Julie dashed over to the light, hoping the voices she just heard weren’t hallucinations made out of hope, but there they were. Collapsed on the floor coughing, looking exhausted and in pain, and very much not crossed over.
She stared at them for a few seconds in shock before stammering out, “W-why are you guys here? I-I thought-” She didn’t even get a chance to finish her sentence before another jolt rocked the collapsed figures followed by another round of coughing and groaning. “I thought you crossed over, why didn’t you cross over?”
“I guess playing the Orpheum wasn’t our unfinished business.” Alex groans as he and Luke and Reggie try hauling themselves up from their collapsed ghost pile.
“Point Caleb,” Reggie added sadly, leaning against a chair for support.
“We wanted you to think we crossed over so we came here,” Luke contributed. “We just-” he paused. “We had nowhere else to go.”
“We thought you’d just go straight to bed,” Reggie explained.
“Yeah, well, I knew she was gonna come out here, but nobody ever listens to-” Alex is cut off by yet another jolt that rocks all three ghosts.
This seems to break whatever trance that had been holding Julie to stand there and stare at her collapsing bandmates, and she tearfully cried out, “You have to save yourselves right now! Go join Caleb’s club, please, it’s better than not existing at all! Go, poof out, just go, do something, do it for me please!”
Reggie simply shook his head, “We’re not going back there”
Luke staggered towards her and looked Julie in the eyes before saying, “No music is worth making, Julie, if we’re not making it with you. No regrets.”
They both give a sniffle before Julie launches herself forward towards Luke to give him a hug and-
She stumbles from the momentum and passes through him. She’s not sure why she did that, she wasn’t exactly expecting anything different, he is a ghost after all.
The guys are jolted once more and are forced to the floor again, but this time they have less strength to get back up. They had just started sitting back up when they were forced back down once more by another painful jolt. They seemed to be getting more frequent and more painful with each one that came. Everyone in the studio knew this was the end, and each second that passed brought them closer to their inevitable doom.
Julie’s eyes were so blurred with tears that she almost didn’t notice that the guys were now fading. She could now sort of see through them and see the furniture behind them, and for the first time since she met them, they actually looked like how she expected ghosts to look.
Luke seemed to notice too and he turned to Julie and said, “Hey, Julie I want you to promise us something, ok? Don’t stop playing music. You just got it back in your life, your mom wouldn’t want you to drop it, and neither do we. Keep smiling, keep making music, and keep showing the world the human wrecking ball that is Julie Molina.”
Julie nodded to him, too choked up to say anything before turning to Reggie who had tried to sit up but only succeeded in hurting himself more. He repositioned himself to lean against a chair before saying, “Take care of Ray and Carlos for me ok? And-and if Carlos ever figures us out, tell him I miss him, ok?”
Julie sniffled, “I will, I promise, I’ll tell him all about you guys.”
Alex looks like he’s about to say something when a jolt once again hits them, and Julie worries this could be it when they briefly flicker out of existence entirely, but they do come back to her, albeit still faded. Alex must’ve realized how little time they had left, and he started to speak faster to get his last request out.
“Julie, promise me if you ever run into Willie, tell you’ll him that I miss him, and to not blame himself for this happening, ‘cuz he’s gonna do that, and-” he pauses, as if he’s scared to say this next part. “And tell him that I love him.”
Julie agreed, “I’ll find him and tell him, he’ll know how much you cared for him.”
Julie looked down at her boys and tried to memorize every detail about them. Alex’s hair that always seemed to fall in his face, Reggie’s smile that wasn’t here right now, but always seemed to light up a room, and Luke’s voice that always seemed to fill a room, whether he was singing or shouting words of encouragement her way. She had to memorize them, since there were no pictures of them to hold whenever she’d get sad, unlike her mom.
Sure, there was the Edge of Great video, but it was a performance. Something rehearsed. She wished she had more time with them for so many reasons, but she wanted more time to create memories, more time to just do normal things and find a way to record them.
Luke looked up at his defeated bandmates and got their attention by announcing, “Hey guys, band circle.”
The guys couldn’t really move all that well through the pain, but they all stuck their fists together in a circle.”We may not have made it into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, but we still played the Orpheum and that’s pretty rad.” Luke then turned to Julie and said, “And, when you win your first Grammy and make it big-hey, we know you will, don’t try to deny it-remember us, ok? And, a little shout out wouldn’t hurt either.” Luke tried to give her a wink at that statement, but it just came out as more of a grimace, but Julie tried to give him a smile regardless.
“Alright legends on three ok?” The band nodded.
“One,” Reggie started.
“Two,” Alex added.
But before Julie could finish, there was one final jolt that coursed through the ghosts’ non-existent bodies, and they disappeared for good before they even hit the floor.
There was absolute silence in the studio as Julie whispered out a quiet, “Three,” her fist still reached out in a non existent circle. She dropped her hand to her side before her whole body dropped to the floor, her whole body wracked with sobs as she sat in the dimly lit, empty studio.
She sat there in the studio and just mourned for a while. Or at least, she thinks it’s a while. She doesn’t know how long she sits there, whether it’s been minutes or hours, she doesn’t know, all she knows is she doesn’t know how she’s going to face her family like this. She’s not sure how she could explain this to her father without looking crazy, and she really didn’t know if she could pretend like everything’s ok, when it’s not, it’s not even close to ok.
So consumed in her grief and tears, she almost doesn’t notice the bright white light enveloping her, growing brighter by the second until-
Silence.
Then-
Looks like today is gonna be another sunny day, with temperatures in the low to mid eighties.

  Sorry for your loss.
Four words that Katie was already sick of hearing. Sorry. What did people have to be sorry for? It wasn’t like it was their fault. Still, she acknowledged the sympathy that came her way, completely automatically, almost emotionlessly. She barely registered the fact she had spoken to Fury and Hill, two people who had been dead five years ago, she didn’t have the energy to wish she could knock Ross’ head off his shoulders and had no idea how long she had walked what was left of the compound, maybe an hour or so? Who cared anyway? She simply did what people asked her to do to help out, whilst Steve hurried around organising everyone and barking orders.
Nevertheless, when the crowds of Emergency Services, Armed Forces and Support Staff that had flooded the Compound left, she suddenly felt alone and found herself in their compound apartment, which had miraculously survived bar from a smashed window in the living area. She glanced around before she headed to the bedroom and slumped heavily on the large bed, staring at the wall.
Just staring.
It was quiet, but her mind was anything but. Her brain was screaming all sorts of stuff at her, a jumble of words and sounds and visions, but she couldn’t really understand any of it.
She simply felt broken.
“Katie?”
A voice broke through her reverie and she looked up to see Steve in the doorway.
“Hey.” She gave him a soft smile. “Pepper just spoke to Happy, the kids are fine. All three are fast asleep. He’s going to wake them in a few hours and bring them back.” “No.” Katie shook her head. “I want him to bring them now.” “Honey its almost two am.” He said, and Katie frowned. Okay, so she’d been walking around a little longer than she thought, then. “Let them sleep. We can go, get cleaned up and…” “Plan how we tell them their Uncle is dead.” She swallowed, gazing back down at her hands.
Steve took a shaky breath. He felt beyond guilty. Guilty that he got to go home to his kids because of the fact that Tony didn’t. Steeling himself, he made his way to the bed, sat down next to his wife and wrapped his arm around her as she lay her head on his shoulder.
“What’s everyone doing?” She asked softly.
“Rhodey is in with Ross and President Ellis…” “Ellis is here?” She looked at him, frowning.
Steve nodded. “Rhodey’s giving him a brief on what’s happened. They’re gonna need to put an announcement out so…”
“Suppose it was probably a shock everyone re-appearing again.” She reasoned, quietly.  “What about everyone else?”
“Well Lang, Parker and Bruce already left.” Steve explained as his hand gently rubbed up and down her arm. “And there’s a chopper on the way to take Pepper home and a couple more following to take the rest of us to the Tower. The roads are completely jammed, apparently there’s impromptu parties taking place all over. Might be a while before we can get back through to Brooklyn.” The thought of partying seemed alien to Katie, but as she thought about it, it wasn’t surprising. People would be greeting lost loved ones, celebrating the fact the world has returned to normal.
For them anyway.
“Clint will want to go home.” Katie nodded. “He’ll be desperate to see Laura and the kids.” “We’ve got a jet on the way for him so he can go as soon as possible.” Steve soothed, dropping a kiss to her head.
If ever Katie was grateful for having a husband with Military organisational skills it was now. He’d literally thought of everything. She closed her eyes and nuzzled into him even more, seeking out comfort like a child, before Steve reached around and pulled her onto his lap, holding her close to him, as they sat in silence.
****
“I guess this is strange for you too, huh?” Steve said as they made their way into the Tower. “Yeah you could say that.” Sam shrugged, “One minute everyone was in Wakanda and then the next minute it was just us, and the jungle had changed.” He paused, scratching his head. “Then that Strange dude turns up and tells us it’s been five years and we needed to go fight one last time.”
“Has it really been that long?” Bucky asked and Steve nodded. “So now you’re older than me?” He grinned. Steve chuckled as Katie gave a small smile. “Shut up.”
They made their way into the elevator and FRIDAY greeted them, somewhat forlornly, as Katie asked for their floor. The elevator fell silent as it scooted upwards, pinging open. Katie stepped out first, followed by Wanda then the men.
“So, where do you want-“Bucky began but he stopped dead causing Sam to bump into him.
“What the hell, Frosty?” he spluttered, frowning as he followed Bucky’s eye line, his own eyes growing wide as he saw what Bucky was staring at. Wanda was also gazing, her mouth open, and Steve immediately knew what they were looking at- the large framed photo on the wall in the living room.
Even though their home was in Brooklyn this was still very much their apartment. Katie sometimes stayed if she had a big meeting, or on occasions they would crash here when they grabbed a rare night out in Manhattan.  And it was for that reason that the photos in the apartment had been updated over the past five years as their lives had moved on. The wall their friends were gazing at contained two prints. The first was one taken by Katie at the hospital when Jamie was hours old, the same photo also adorned the wall in the lounge at home and it showed Steve asleep in the chair by her hospital bed, hair unkempt, shirt crumbled, stubble on his chin as his baby son was clutched to his chest as they both slept. He remembered the moment like it was yesterday, one snapshot moment out of God knows how many, all of which the three people stood in front of him had missed.
The second was from last year, and showed Emmy with Alex as they sat on the sofa at home, both grinning at the camera.
“You…”  Sam gasped as Wanda and Bucky turned to them, mouth hanging open.
Steve nodded, “Yeh, err, did no one tell you?” He asked, rubbing his neck.
“No.” Bucky breathed.
“But then it never really cropped up in conversation, you know, on account of us being in the middle of a battle and all.” Sam said, a little sarcastically and Wanda thumped his arm before she turned to Katie.
“How old?” She asked softly.
“Emily is sixteen next week.” Katie said, looking at the photos smiling softly. “We adopted her after the snap, it’s a long story.”
She then looked at Steve who smiled, knowing she was allowing him the task of revealing their boy’s name to two of the men he was named after.
“And Jamie’s three.”  He turned to look at Bucky and Sam.
“Jamie?” Bucky asked thickly.
“Or to give him his full name James Anthony Samuel.”
Bucky and Sam exchanged a look, the pair of them floundering for words.
“Cap,” Sam swallowed, his eyes misting over. “Wow, I’m so happy for you guys.” “I can’t wait to meet them.” Wanda beamed.
“You might regret saying that.” Steve chuckled. “Emmy’s a sass bag and Jamie can be a handful. He’s only three but he’s stubborn, opinionated- don’t even say it.” He pointed at Bucky who had opened his mouth to comment, a grin spreading across his handsome face.
“They’re awesome.”  Katie spoke softly as her eyes moved round the apartment and fell on a photo of her and Tony taken at her wedding. Suddenly she couldn’t be there anymore. Excusing herself she headed into their bedroom where she flopped onto the bed, now feeling utterly overwhelmed, still struggling to make head or tail of her emotions. She should have been celebrating like everyone else in the streets was doing. Their friends and trillions of other people were saved, but she couldn’t because again, just like the other week when they had grieved for Natasha, there was one person who wasn’t coming back.
Her brother.
Taking a deep breath, she shed her boots before she stood up and peeled off her cat suit before she made her way straight into the en-suite.
She turned the shower on as hot as she could stand, an attempt to sooth the pain she now felt in every inch of her body. But whilst some of it was bruising from the multiple blows she had taken, some of it was coming from inside. The pain of losing her brother was physical, and hard. Closing her eyes she lay her head against the tiles, allowing the water to beat down on her, lost in her memories. “I got full marks on my English essay Tone!”  Her 10 year old self grinned up at him as he leaned against the car, looking as effortlessly cool as ever.
“Get you, you little brainbox!” He ruffled her hair. “That’s awesome, so awesome in fact I think we need to stop for pizza and a shit load of ice cream on the way home. Sound good?” “You’re the best!” She beamed as he took her pink back-pack off her and dropped it into the trunk as she climbed into the passenger seat of his BWM.
“Oh no, you are not going out wearing that!” Tony stod up as she walked into the living room of the house. Sixteen year old Katie rolled her eyes.
“Tone its boiling hot outside, what you want me to wear? A pair of jeans and a fucking coat?” “Anything but that!” He scoffed, looking at the rather short denim skirt. “Young Lady, I can see what you had for breakfast!”
“Oh bite me, Tony.” She shot back, hearing the guffaw that Rhodey gave out from the sofa before she shot out of the front door to greet her boyfriend who had just pulled up the drive.
She was eighteen…, cruising along the cliff in Malibu, laughing, her hands on the steering wheel of her convertible bug, Tony in the passenger seat sipping an iced tea as the pair of them sang as loudly as they could to Drops of Jupiter- their song.
“Mr Rock and Roll over there, listen to you!” She laughed as the song finished and it changed to AC/DC ‘Thunder’.
“If you ever tell anyone about my love of Train I will kill you.” Tony looked at her over his sunglasses and she snorted, grinning.
“I’m so telling Pepper.”
“Err you know I can still pull my funding.” He glared “You can kiss goodbye to going to Oxford…”
And speaking of Oxford, at twenty-one, she was there, accepting her first class honours in English Literature and Mythology. As she smiled for the camera, she could see Tony stood up in the middle of the hall, whistling before he punched the air. “That’s my girl!” He yelled “Katie Maria Stark. That’s my girl! No I won’t sit down…what did you just say?” And he began arguing with the person behind him.
At twenty-six she was crying, tears of happiness as the ramp on the aircraft carrier opened to reveal her brother. His hair was longer, he looked thinner but he was alive. He was barely at the bottom before she flung herself at him, not caring that his arm was a sling.
“Hey Kiddo.” He said softly as she buried her face into his neck.
“You fucking asshole!” She sobbed, “Next time, you ride with Rhodey, you got that?”
“Trust me, there will be no next time.” He chuckled as she pulled back. “Afghanistan is a shit hole.”
A year later she was crying again, sobbing even, as Tony sat with his arms around her, gently shushing her as she sat up in her bed. “How could he do that to me Tony?” She sniffed, her tears dampening her brother’s t-shirt as he rubbed her back, laying his head against hers. “I thought he loved me…but…” “He isn’t worth your tears, Kiddo.” He sighed “Grant Ward doesn’t deserve them, or you. No one ever will, you got that? No one will ever be good enough for you.”
And then she was walking up the aisle towards her future husband, her arm linked tightly around Tony’s. He pressed a kiss to her head.
“Remember, just because I’m giving you away doesn’t mean I won’t kick his ass if he ever hurts you.” Tony mumbled and she snorted, turning to look at him. “I love you to the stars and back, Katie, remember that…”
Like she could ever forget. Tony hadn’t been to everyone’s taste, hell, at times he hadn’t be hers, and they’d been estranged for two years. But Katie had never, not once, stopped loving the man who had brought her up as his own. Her brother and father all rolled into one.
She finished washing her hair and stepped out of the shower, the tears still not arriving. She began to wonder if there was something wrong with her. She’d cried more when Natasha died. She pulled on a towel robe that was hanging behind the door and began to dry her hair, squeezing the water out of the long strands.
“I remember when you used to do that for me.” She grinned, watching Tony as he sat with Morgan between his legs on the lounger round the pool at her Brooklyn home, rubbing the little girl’s wet hair ferociously with a pink beach towel, making the three year old cackle with laughter. I remember…but Morgan won’t.
And then the cry ripped from her chest, like someone had reached down her throat and pulled it from the very depths of her heart.
***** Steve made sure the guys were settled in a spare apartment a few floors down, the three of them opting to share, none of them particularly wanting to be alone.  Making his way back into theirs, he headed straight to the bedroom and heard Katie turn off the water to the shower. With a groan he stripped off the top half of his uniform, dropping the grubby item to the bed. His eyes were drawn to the silver star in the middle, and he ran his fingers over it, the material torn in places having seen better days, much like him.
With a deep breath he reached to pull off his compression shirt, but before he got chance, he heard a noise from the bathroom, a primal, raw, broken scream that chilled his every bone. Quick as flash he crossed the room and pushed open the door to the en-suite and found his wife slumped on her knees on the floor, screaming and crying uncontrollably.
“He’s gone! He’s gone, he’s gone!” Steve had known this was coming and it broke his heart that he could do nothing to help, nothing to take away the utter desperation and pain and anger his wife was feeling. Without hesitation he dropped to his knees and she turned to him, fisting her hands around his top as he pulled her close, one arm round her back, the other in her hair.
“Let it out,” his voice was croaky as he rocked her, gently stroking her hair as his cheek pressed against the top of her head, “I got you, sweetheart, I got you.” How long they stayed there for, with Katie screaming and crying over the soft sounds of his soothing, Steve had no idea, but eventually her sobs became sniffles as she regained some form of composure.
“Steve,” she managed to stutter as she pulled back to look at him, “Tony’s gone, he’s gone, why? Why did he have to do that? There had to be some other way!” “Oh, Doll.”  Steve’s voice cracked, his own heart ached with grief and sympathy and love as he dropped a kiss to her forehead, pulling her onto his lap as he sat back on the floor, making no attempts to move her. He buried his face into her hair, his own sobs catching in his throat.
“All my life Tony has been there.” She whispered gently as kissed her head. “Even when we were apart those years I knew that if I needed him, he would be there…but now…he’s gone and I don’t know what to do.”
“You do what you always do.” Steve whispered softly as he pulled back, cupping her face in his hands, wiping her tears with his thumbs. “You get up, you dust yourself off and you act like the amazing, strong, beautiful woman you are. My wife, my baby momma.”
“I don’t know if I can. Katie spluttered.
“Yes, you can. You’re the strongest person I know.” He implored her, sniffing a little.
“I don’t feel strong.”
“You won’t.” He shook his head. “Not yet. But I’m here. Okay? And we’ll do it together.”
Katie looked at him for a moment before she moved once more to bury her face into his t-shirt again, simply breathed him in. His warmth and familiar smell, even if he wasn’t as fresh as he could be after the exertion of battle, was a comfort, a balm to her broken soul.
Tony was gone, she knew that, but she wasn’t on her own. She’d never be on her own as long as she had Steve.
****
“Don’t be sad Momma.” Jamie whispered, as Katie’s tears tickled down her cheeks, her son on her lap. TO her right, Emmy sat on her father’s, despite her age meaning she was normally way past that stage, as she cried into his chest, his arms gently cradling her. “Uncle Nee isn’t on his own.” “What do you mean, baby?” Katie asked, sniffing as he played with a strand of her hair.
He looked at her with his baby blue eyes and shrugged, as if the answer was obvious. “Because he’s with Auntie Nat-Nat.”
“Yeah,” Katie stuttered, a soft sob escaping her. “You’re right. But I’m still sad, but you don’t need to be worried about that okay?” Jamie nodded, before he blinked and frowned. “I can kiss it better, like you kiss my ouches better.”
Katie smiled as he leaned up, connecting his lips to hers with a loud smacking noise.
“That’s it, you just made it all okay.” She smiled, wiping her eyes.
“When can we go home?” Emmy asked, sitting up slightly, her voice croaky.
“Soon, I promise.” Steve looked at her. “I think we’ll stay here for tonight, your mom and I both need a rest.”
Emmy nodded “I expect kicking alien butt for hours takes it out of you.” Steve snorted. “A little.” “You did it though. Everyone came back.” “Yeah, and on that note,” Katie picked up, “we have some people we’d like you to meet. That’s if you’re feeling up to it.” “Is it them? Bucky, Sam and Wanda?” Emmy asked, her wet brown eyes opening wide.
“Yeah.” Steve smiled. “And, if it’s ok with you, we thought we could all have breakfast together.”
“Pancakes?” Jamie asked hopefully and Katie nodded, dropping a kiss to his head.
“Pancakes” She affirmed.
“Now?”
“Do you ever think about anything but this?” Katie chuckled, prodding his tummy. He pondered for a second.
“Legos.” he said, nodding. “I think about my legos sometime.”
Emmy snorted and Steve let out a little laugh “Pancakes and legos eh, son?” he reached out and ruffled Jamie’s hair. “What more could a three year old want?”
****
Manhattan was in utter chaos and going out in public was the last thing Steve or Katie wanted for fear of being mobbed. However, the kitchens in the tower were well stocked and after sending Emmy to forage what she could, it was easy for Katie to whip up a batch of batter and throw some bacon into a pan.
She set Emmy to work chopping some fruit, and never one to miss out, she stood Jamie on a chair in front of her and gently guided his hand as he held the whisk to stir the batter.  Katie was literally grabbing the ladle to drop the first load into the pan, when the door to the apartment opened and Steve’s voice carried in to the kitchen.
“Hey guys?” Jamie squealed in excitement and Katie moved so he could get down. He shot out of the kitchen, barrelling into the lounge where he skidded to a halt by his dad and gazed up at the three strange adults in front of him.
The first thing that hit Bucky was just how like Steve the little boy was. Stocky, bright blue eyes and a shock of dark blonde hair.
“He looks like you.” He smiled, nodding to Steve as Katie stepped into the room with Emmy and smiled.
“Jamie, Emmy, this is Bucky, Sam and Wanda.” Steve introduced them all, as Emmy raised her hand shyly in greeting.
Meanwhile, Jamie simply gazed up at Bucky, his attention focussed directly on his metal arm and Bucky suddenly began to worry that it would scare him. He was attempting to move it out of view by standing side on, until Jamie stepped forward with all his usual boldness and pointed.
“Is that metal?” “Jamie.” Steve spoke, his tone soft. He couldn’t scald his son for being curious, but at the same time he had seen the apprehension in Bucky’s eyes. Apprehension that had now turned to amusement.
“Yeah it is.” Bucky chuckled, crouching down so he was eye level with his namesake. He held his left hand up, wiggling the fingers. “Wanna touch it?” Jamie reached out and placed his palm against Bucky’s prosthetic and grinned, “Cool,” before he looked up at Steve. “Can I have one?”
“Absolutely not.” Steve shook his head with a grin.
“You think that’s cool you should see my wings.” Sam crouched down next to Bucky, smiling at Jamie.
“You have wings?” The little boy’s eyes grew wide “I want…”
“No!”
“Fine I’ll just ask Santa.” Jamie shruggged and Sam let out a loud laugh.
“I like this kid!” he grinned, standing up.
“You can have him.” Steve winked, as Bucky stood up straight and grinned. “Saves us sending him to The Children’s Prison.” “Morgan told me there’s no such place.” Jamie looked at his Dad and Steve let out a sigh. The threat of the Child Prison was their biggest bargaining chip when he was being naughty. Especially as the naughty step wasn’t an option, because the first (and last) time they tried that they caught him climbing up the staircase and sliding down the bannister.
“I told you titch, it does.” Emmy gave a dramatic roll of her eyes. “I lived there before mom and dad adopted me. And all they give you to eat all day is slugs and slime…” Steve shared a look with Bucky and let out a loud laugh.
“Don’t.” Bucky shook his head with a grin.
“You gave Becca nightmares for days with that story!” Steve laughed as he recalled Bucky telling his sister about a hole in the ground where bad kids went. “She wouldn’t go near a manhole for months!”
“I can still feel the blow round the ears my Pa gave me.” Bucky automatically reached up to rub at the back of his head. The well natured chatter continued as they made their way into the kitchen. Steve went to brew the coffee as Sam, Wanda and Bucky took seats round the table with the kids. Occasionally he caught the odd snippet of their chat as Jamie told Bucky about his toys at home, informed Sam all about his friend at day-care, whilst Emmy was busy talking to Wanda about school and what she wanted to do in the future. But all the time Steve had one eye on his wife as she stood, silently, cooking enough pancakes to feed a small army.
Which, to be fair, was probably what they would need with two super soldiers and a hungry three year old to feed.
Moving over towards her, he slipped his arms around her waist and dropped a kiss to her cheek.
“You ok?” He asked, before he sighed “Sorry, stupid question.”
She chuckled and shook her head. “No it’s not stupid, I know what you meant. And honestly, no. I’m not. Not really. But I will be, in time. I hope.”
Steve dropped another kiss to her cheek and winced as a loud “GET A ROOM!” sounded across the kitchen and he turned to glare at his son. Bucky and Sam exchanged a gleeful look as Steve raised his hand and pointed at Emmy accusingly. “That was not me!” She scoffed, indignantly “It was Bucky that told him to say it.” “If this is the impression you have on my kids after all of fifteen minutes, James Buchanan Barnes, then I’m going to have to seriously consider letting you near them again.” Katie shook her head as she dropped the plate of pancakes into the middle of the table.
“Why did you just call him James?” Jamie asked, frowning
“Because my name is James too.” Bucky answered for Katie.
“No, it’s Bucky.”
“He only gets called James when he’s been bad, bit like you, pal.” Steve chuckled, placing Jamie’s plate of food in front of him. “Now eat that, and then you can show Buck your legos.”
“My legos are here?” Jamie said, grinning.
“Yeah they’re in your bag, we brought them from the compound.” Steve answered, dropping a kiss to his son’s head.
“What the hell is a Lego?” Bucky asked, his face contorted in confusion. The room feel silent as all eyes turned to the man who glanced around, suddenly feeling very self-conscious.  “What?” ****
Rhodey called later that morning to give them a heads up that the President would be addressing the nation later that afternoon, and to also inform Katie that they were talking about honouring both Tony and Natasha posthumously. Katie had merely snorted, not entirely sure what Tony would have said about any of that, until Rhodey made her laugh about the last time he had received an honour, getting stabbed with the pin by the Senator awarding it to him,  Senator Stern.
Who had turned out to be HYDRA.
True to his word, just as he had done five years ago, President Ellis’ address rang out across the nation at precisely three that afternoon, on every TV and Radio channel there was.
“I know there is much speculation surrounding the events of the last 24 hours, and it is for that reason I find myself addressing you all once more, with regards to the Decimation. Only this time I am happy to greet you all with much better news. Thanks to the brave actions of the Avengers and countless others who fought in a ferocious battle Upstate, the Vanished have been returned to us in the same state in which they left.
But it isn’t without cost.
Unfortunately, I have the very sad job of confirming to you all that the rumours are true. Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff both lost their lives in the mission to bring everyone back. My sincere condolences and thoughts are with the rest of the Avengers, in particular the Rogers and Stark families, and I’m sure I speak for the entire world when I say we will be forever indebted to the two fallen heroes for their brave sacrifices which ensured that friends and families across the globe could be reunited.”
Katie glanced down at her hands as she took a deep breath, the tears falling into her lap as Steve’s arm curled round her shoulder, sniffing a little as his own eyes were once again misted over.
“I know you will all have many questions, some of you will be at a loss as to what to do, and unfortunately I don’t have all the answers, so it is for that reason, if I may, I’d like to address those who have been returned to us.
Over the past five years the world has become a very different place to the one you knew. People lost entire families, friends, husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends. We had to rebuild, make sense of living without you. So I ask you , please be patient with us whilst we try once more to make sense of events, only this time they are a lot happier as you have all been returned to us. Don’t take it too personally if we seem a little, well, astounded.”
Ellis paused, wiping his eyes as he smiled, licking his lips.
“Thank you all, God Bless America, and God Bless the Avengers.”
****
That night fireworks exploded across the skies all over the country. The current occupants of the tower sat on the roof watching the symphony of colours and explosions as it light up the Manhattan sky-line, Jamie opting to sit on Bucky’s knee instead of his father’s, because of course Bucky was now his favourite person on the planet.
But Steve didn’t mind, well, not too much anyway.
The next few days passed them by in a bit of a blur. They moved back to the house in Brooklyn. Sam and Bucky came with them. However, surprisingly to Steve (but not to Katie) Wanda opted to head to Clint’s after the archer called and offered her a room. Steve’s time was divided between speaking to the UN, various people in the senate and government alongside Rhodey as they started to make plans to help those people who had returned because reversing the snap had raised a whole cacophony of different problems, just as Tony had predicted it would.
Some of the vanished had come back to find their wives or husbands had re-married. Others found themselves with no-one left as they’d passed away. Some found themselves homeless as new occupants had moved into their apartments which had been left vacant. Two of those people were Peter Parker and his Aunt May, who were now residing in the Tower until Katie could find them somewhere permanent.
And then there were the kids who had been adopted, suddenly finding themselves with two sets of parents.
Katie, on the other hand, had no time or energy for anything other than planning Tony’s funeral with Pepper, and a service of sorts for Natasha with Clint. Natasha’s was to take place first, a small ceremony at Clint’s farm where they would be planting a red maple tree in her honour. Tony’s, however, was slightly more tricky.
Her brother had, at one point, led a very public lifestyle and naturally (even if unfairly) he was attracting the most public interest. They’d been approached by President Ellis, who had asked if they would be open to a full, state public funeral. Katie had been horrified at first, until Pepper had snorted and reminded her that the Old Tony would have loved the attention and fuss.
But New Tony wouldn’t.
Which was why, in the end, they compromised and chose to celebrate the two sides to Tony’s huge personality.
For the Genius, Billionaire, Play-Boy, Philanthropist they would hold a service at St Patrick’s Cathedral and for the husband, father, brother, friend they would then hold a more intimate wake at the lake house, where his ashes would be scattered eventually.
It was draining, emotionally and physically, so it was no surprise to Steve that Katie was constantly tired and a little irritable and the Solider felt the harsh side of her tongue on more than one occasion. But he never bit back, he knew how she was feeling. He’d had to do it with his Ma. Instead he listened to her bounce ideas off him, helped with the organisation where he could, and simply comforted her, holding her close whilst she cried when she needed to.
A week post the return of the Vanished, people seemed to have reached a half-way point, so to speak, between what they had been like before the Snap and what they had become post. But what was noticeable to all of them was that they were persistently mobbed in the street, people wanting to thank them constantly.
Jamie found the whole thing hilarious, waving to people as he walked with his Father one morning to the play-ground. Steve, however, after half an hour had returned home because he couldn’t stand it anymore.
“It’s mad.” He shook his head with a sigh, flopping onto the sofa next to her. “I mean…”
“It’ll die down.” Katie yawned. “Just gonna take a while. People still don’t know what to do. Hell, half the time I don’t know what to do.” She took a deep breath, the back of her hand pressing to her mouth as a queasy feeling washed over her for the umpteenth time that day. “You still feeling crappy?” Steve asked, watching as Jamie sat on the rug with his trucks.
“A little.”
“You thrown up again?” “No.” She shook her head “I don’t feel sick anymore just a little funny, drained almost. I don’t think it’s anything serious. Probably just the stress of all the organising and stuff.”
But as she said the words something in her mind clicked and she sat bolt upright, Steve giving her a curious look.
“What’s wrong?”
“Bruce’s Snap.” She whispered. “The one where he brought everyone back.”
“What about it?”
“What if it brought everyone back?” “Well we know it did…” Steve frowned, not following her line of thought.
“No I mean,” Katie took his hand and placed it on her stomach, “everyone.”
It took Steve a second to cotton on, but when he did he blinked, looking into his wife’s eyes, a faint buzzing ringing in his ears.
“Shit.” He spluttered out.
“Language.” Jamie reprimanded him almost immediately, but both parents ignored him.
“I didn’t,” Steve swallowed, “I mean, I didn’t even consider that a possibility. Do you think it has?”
Katie took a deep breath. “I dunno, I mean the first snap took it away…”
They stayed still for a moment, simply looking at each other, both thinking the same. If one snap had taken their baby, the second snap could quite as easily have brought it back.
“I think I need to go to the store.” Katie muttered.
**** Less than an hour later husband and wife were stood in the bathroom looking down. Down at four different tests. Four different tests that all told them the same thing.
“I can’t believe it.” Steve whispered, his arms wrapping around his wife from behind as he stared down at the test in her hand.
“Me neither.” She whispered, turning to face him, tears in her eyes.
“I’m gonna be a daddy, again.” His hands fell to her hips, blue eyes shining as she gave him a smile, the tears falling down her face.
“And I’m gonna be fat again.” She spluttered, a watery laugh. There was a pause, before Steve’s face cracked into a huge grin and he pulled her to him. She wrapped her arms round his neck and he hugged her close, the pair of them laughing through their tears.
“I like you fat with my kid.” Steve pulled away, wiping the tears that were trickling down her face with his thumbs. She smiled and returned the gesture, brushing the back of her hand over his wet cheeks.
“I love you. So fucking much.” He whispered softly as he dropped a kiss to her lips.
“I love you too.” Her voice croaked before Steve pulled her close once more, his huge arms holding her tightly to him, as he breathed her in, his face pressing into her hair.
And for the first time in a week, Katie’s heart felt a little less broken.

The highway whizzed passed outside her window as she made her way home. Y/n had one hand on the steering wheel as the other rubbed small circles into her temple. It was a Sunday after all, and she had to go into the warehouse. Et Cetera was working on launching a new skincare line, and one of the new machines had caught fire. It was just the icing on top of her already tipping cake. It felt like the only thing she had been doing for the past few weeks was putting out fires, whether it was at work or at home.
The only thing getting her through the current shit storm that was today was the Memorial Day barbeque celebration at Jared and Gen’s later. Well, actually it was starting about now, but she needed to get home and grab her bathing suit before she could go anywhere. She was pissy that work was making her late, but she had to try and remember that it would all be worth it once the line launched.
As Y/n pulled into the driveway of her and Jensen’s home, she could see the garage door was open, his black Land Rover pulled out and ready to go. Y/n replaced its spot inside with her car, jumping from the cool cab into the sweltering heat of Texas.
Y/n went for the door leading to their mudroom before remembering that the hall was packed tight with boxes, ready for the movers to come and whisk them away. She made a detour back down the drive and into the house through the front door.
The television played softly somewhere in the background and Y/n assumed Jensen was on his ass in front of it, considering that was where she often found him nowadays. He was enjoying his time off a little too much, but after fifteen years, she couldn’t say he didn’t deserve to. She stopped to take off her heels before venturing further inside, carrying them and her purse in one hand.
“Jay?” She called out, hoping to find her husband ready to pack the car and go. But as she entered the kitchen, the cooler sat open on the floor, empty of anything, even ice. The woman bit her tongue before moving on towards their bedroom, the sound of the television growing as she neared.
Passing by his home office, she stopped short, peering through the cracked door. Inside, the room looked as it had been untouched. The books were still lining the large shelves and his desk was strewn with papers and various contracts.
The sight was all she needed to boil over. Granted, she didn’t have a far way to go considering having to go into work on Sunday had already riled her up. Y/n chewed on the inside of her cheek as she stormed into their room, finding Jensen perched on the edge of the bed. He had their beach bag seemingly packed already behind him, but it was no help to him now. His wife was already steaming.
“Hey honey,” he smiled, the grin fading as she stalked passed him without a word. Y/n tossed her heels into their nearly empty closet before continuing to their bathroom, slamming the door behind her.
Jensen cocked his head to the side as he stared after where she had disappeared. He knew when she left this morning she was in less than a stellar mood, but he was, unfortunately, completely clueless as to what had her in a mood now.
“Babe?” He shut off the television and went over to the door, rapping his knuckles against the wood lightly. “Are you okay?”
“Not now.” Her voice was soft from the other side, a slight echo to it as it reverberated in the empty bathroom.
“I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.” He tried the handle of the door, surprisingly finding it locked. His brows knit together, as his wife never locked the door on him. “Y/n/n?”
“Don’t,” the door swung open then, revealing her now sans the suit she had gone into work in, and only in her panties. “I cannot talk to you right now.”
“What the hell did I do?” Jensen followed her as she pushed past him, pulling her bathing suit from its place in her drawers and exchanging her panties for the bikini.
“I have been asking you for a week, a week Jensen, to pack up your office, and this morning I have to go into work to deal with an emergency. I figured that'd be the perfect time for you to get it done, but no! You couldn’t even be bothered to fill the damn cooler for this party!”
Her husband backtracked, blinking at her sudden outburst. “It takes two seconds to fill the cooler, I was waiting until you got home, and my office will take no time at all.”
“Jensen, the movers will be here tomorrow. Tomorrow!” She repeated for emphasis as she pulled a tank and a pair of shorts over her swimsuit. “And we have a party to go to. Are you gonna get all of that done before ten in the morning?”
“I have time. They have plenty of other things to move first.”
Y/n clenched her fingers into a fist before relaxing them with a deep breath. “I don’t understand why you couldn’t have done it this morning or even yesterday. Why do you insist on making me more anxious than I already am?”
“Oh, come on. You know I don’t do that on purpose. I’m sorry that it’s not helping you, but it’s all going to be okay,” he tried, his apology only ticking her off more than she already was.
“Whatever, I’ll just get over it. Come on, we have a party to go to.” Her tone was clipped and Jensen knew he was still in the dog house. But he also knew his wife well enough to know now was not the time to push her. The two of them could talk about it later.
He left her to finish getting ready and went to pack the cooler with beer and water and loaded it in the car. Y/n followed him out of the house not even a minute later, their swim bag over her shoulder. The couple climbed into the car in silence, and that’s how they remained the whole drive to Jared’s.
All the other guests had arrived already when they pulled into the driveway. Jensen sighed as he watched his wife jump out of the car without a word. He hit the steering wheel with the heel of his hand, hoping that her nosy family didn’t pick up on the anger rolling off of her.
He unloaded the cooler and dragged it along behind him, though the garage and out to the poolside. Setting down under some shade, he wasted no time in reaching in and cracking open a bottle of craft beer.
“What did you do?” Jared’s voice had him nearly choking on the fizzy liquid as it went down his throat. He didn’t even hear his brother-in-law come up behind him.
“What makes you think I’ve done something?” Jensen knew he was being far too defensive, but fuck Jared and his perceptiveness. He had known this would happen.
“Uh, you two didn’t walk back here hand in hand forgetting there are other people in the world.” Jared had that inquisitorial look in his eye, the same one that nearly had Jensen shitting his pants when he and Y/n had been running around.
“Okay, first off, we don’t forget there are other people around. And secondly,” Jensen sighed before continuing, “she’s just stressed and taking it out on me.”
“Uh-huh, what did you do?”
“I didn’t pack up the office this morning when she had to run into work, so sue me.”
“Ah, dude, the movers are coming tomorrow.” Jared wrinkled his nose, but Jensen could see the glimmer of mischief in his eyes.
“I swear to god, you need to go somewhere else, away from me.” Jensen shoved his friend's shoulder, causing Jared to burst out laughing as he sauntered away. The actor shook his head as he reached for another beer to bring his wife.
As he made his way further into the backyard, he found Y/n sitting at the deck table, having already discarded her tank top. She was chatting with her sisters-in-law, a smile on her face until she noticed him walking her way. But she didn’t make a move to stop him as he neared, instead accepting the beer from him and leaning into his touch when he kissed the crown of her head. It was her way of telling him that she was okay, she only needed a little time, and he could accept that.
What he couldn’t accept was her blatant teasing throughout the day. Now, he knew she was pissed at him, but she was playing a very dangerous game right now. It started out innocent enough when she had asked him to rub sunblock on her back. She’d laid out along the lounger and Jensen had knelt beside her, rubbing the cream into her skin. It was the small moan she let out as his fingers dug into her muscles that had his breath hitching in his throat. She was careful to keep it low enough that only he would hear but loud enough to set him on edge.
Her next trick came in the form of flaunting herself in front of him, over and over again. Jumping into the water right in front of him and coming out to lean down for something, giving him the perfect view down her bathing suit. Jared knocked him upside the head one time when he caught Jensen staring and then adjusting himself, quirking an accusatory eyebrow up at his not so subtle action. Jensen supposed he deserved it, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. He finished God only knew what number beer as he glared at her retreating figure. It was clear to him that her actions were no accident now, she knew exactly what she was doing.
It wasn’t until the watermelon incident that he knew just how much she was riling herself up in all this too. Jensen was in the pool with the kids, having fun tossing the boys in the water between him and Jared. The girls were readying the food for dinner, and Y/n had decided to steal a piece of watermelon. His wife sat down in the chair, biting into the soft flesh of the melon. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched as the juice dripped down her chin and landed on the swell of her breast. Y/n made eye contact, smiling at him as she wiped it away with her finger and placed the sweet liquid on her tongue, sucking her finger between her lips for a moment too long. He had to fight back an eye roll, instead deciding to narrow his eyes at her, his tongue licking along his lip and pulling it between his teeth. It seemed to do the trick as he noticed the subtle way she clenched her thighs before crossing her legs. Now he had her right where he wanted her, all primed for the perfect payback.
“What are you up to?” Gen appeared next to Y/n as she watched the interaction between the couple.
“I’m eating watermelon.”
“And making a mess.”
“That’s one of the joys of eating watermelon in your suit, you don’t have to worry about where the juice goes.” Y/n turned away from her husband’s heated stare to look at the small brunette next to her.
“Okay,” she raised her hands up, “I do not want to know.” Gen backed away from where her sister-in-law was laughing. No, she really did not want to know.
Her last harebrained scheme to get her husband going came as the night was coming to an end and she had more alcohol coursing through her veins than was necessary. The sun was disappearing behind the trees and the boys had lit a bonfire. Jensen found a spot on one of the loungers near the fire, his long legs crossed at the ankle in front of him. Y/n came out of the house behind him with his sweater hanging off her shoulders, that glint in her eye still present as she walked over to where he was.
“You have the bug spray?” She asked him politely.
“Maybe,” he tilted his head at her as she looked around him for it. Spotting it on the patio below, she reached over him, placing her hand for balance on his thigh. Jensen grunted as she stretched across him and snatched the spray bottle, watching her every move. As she moved to stand back up, a devilish smile crossed his features before he grabbed her wrist and caused her to stumble into his lap.
“Don’t use too much,” his voice was nearly a growl as it reverberated in his chest.
“Never, dear,” she replied, skimming her supporting hand across the bulge in his swim trunks as she went, feeling her husband up.
Y/n had to take a deep breath as she walked away from Jensen, the buzz from her many drinks was making her brain fuzzy and needy for her husband. Her plan hadn’t been to wind herself up along with him, but she should have known better, that two could play her little game.
After applying the spray, she sat down across the fire from her husband, Odette choosing her lap as her resting place as she made her rounds through the adults. Y/n helped her make a couple of s’mores on the fire before handing her off to her father as she headed inside for a mixed drink from Gen’s fridge.
The air conditioning caused pimples to rise on her heated skin as she entered the home and took off her sweater. Y/n stumbled slightly as she crossed the threshold inside, the numerous drinks of the day taking hold of her brain. The day wasn’t over yet, and she was determined to slip in at least one more.
By the time she reached the fridge, she heard the door behind her opening and closing again. She paid it no mind as she pulled the juice and soda from the fridge, turning on her heel and bumping the door closed with her hip.
“I know what you’re doing,” his growl had her nearly jumping out of her skin, the bottles in her arms tumbling ever so slightly before she clumsily regained her grip on them.
“Jesus.” Y/n set the bottle down on the island in the kitchen, her heart thumping wildly in her chest. Jensen stepped closer to her, invading her personal space, and squaring his shoulders to make himself even bigger than he already was. He knew just how much it made her weak in the knees when he displayed his size difference over her, and he was using that knowledge to his advantage.
“Come on babe, you can’t play me.” His voice was low, the sound of it reverberating deep in his chest, sending shivers down her spine. “I’ve been watching you clench your thighs all day.”
“I—” The syllable barely slipped from her lips before his hands were on her, dragging her down the back hall and into the dark laundry room. The soft glow of the moonlight and a far off street lamp illuminated the room just enough for them to see each other.
Jensen pushed her body against the dryer as he closed the door behind them both. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the low lighting, giving him enough time to lift her onto the machine and slot himself between her open thighs.
“I’m still pissed at you,” she murmured as he dove into her neck, placing soft open-mouthed kisses against her sensitive skin.
“So you’re torturing me then?”
“You tick me off, I tick you off. I think it’s only fair.” Her words were a whimper on her lips when Jensen nipped against her collar bone. Y/n ran her hands up his bare back, his skin still heated from the Texas sun. The woman could feel his muscles rippling under her fingertips as he ground his arousal into her core.
“Mmm, don’t think that’s how this works,” Jensen stepped back from her, her hands falling to her sides to catch herself from falling from the machine. Her chest rose and fell with a deep breath as she tried to calm her hammering heart. “See, I think now’s the time to show you who’s really in charge here.”
Y/n bit her lip as she looked at her husband up and down. Y/n loved this side of him, the small upturn in his lips sent heat pooling deep in her stomach. Without breaking eye contact, she reached behind her, untying her bathing suit top and dropping it on the washer next to her. She watched his Adam’s apple bob as he fought to keep his composure, but his wife knew him well enough to see the way his tongue peeked out to wet his lower lip. He was on the brink of breaking, and she had just the idea of how to push him over the edge.
“Then show me,” she purred, sucking two fingers between her lips before disappearing her hand into her bathing suit bottoms. Jensen moved like lightning, his fingers wrapping around her wrist and pulling her hand up near his face.
“No time for that, baby girl.” Jensen dropped his grip on her, moving to pull her bottoms from her body. Y/n lifted her hips to help him and Jensen placed the barely-there material with the other piece of her bikini. He took back his place in between her legs, attacking her mouth with fervor. Y/n could taste the beer he had been drinking all day on his lips, the taste all-consuming of every other flavor she so loved of her husband, but she didn’t care at this point. She’d been trying to rile him up all day, in turn doing the same thing to herself, and now she wanted the release she knew her husband could provide her.
He had one hand on her hip and the other was cradling the base of her skull, keeping her as close to his body as he could. The soft moans escaping her body only drove him crazier than he already was. Y/n ran her nails down his back, slipping her hands underneath the elastic of his bathing suit and squeezing the taut muscles of his ass.
“Fuck me, please,” she begged, far past caring for any decorum at that moment. He already had her naked and wet in her brother’s laundry room, her whole family just outside enjoying a bonfire as the night came to an end.
“God, anything for you, baby,” Jensen murmured against her lips as she moved her hands to pull his erection from its confines. Y/n guided him to her entrance, a collective sigh falling from their lips as he bottomed out inside her. He stilled as her body adjusted to him, his forehead dropping to her shoulder as he breathed deeply. A surprised gasp popped from her mouth as he pulled out and fucked into her in one swift movement before easily finding his rhythm.
The laundry room filled with the couple’s collective breaths and the soft creaking of the machine she was placed on. The air grew thick around them as they both frantically chased after their release that they had been building up all day. Y/n’s hands were roaming across the heated skin of Jensen’s back, looking for purchase anywhere she could.
Every muscle in her body was clenching as he drove himself home time and time again. “Jay, fuck—” She wasn’t sure what she was asking for from him, all she knew was that she was almost there.
“I know honey, I’ve got you.” His voice was low, rumbling deep in his chest as he licked over the shell of her ear. Everything about him was invading her senses, making her forget anything but her husband. Jensen adjusted his hold on his wife, giving himself access to rub tight quick circles to her clit. Before she could react to his touch, she felt her body falling, every muscle shaking around him. Her orgasm pulled him into his shortly afterward, his hot seed coating her walls as his cock twitched inside her. Jensen shuddered under her fingertips, his shaky breaths like music to her ears. Her husband fell into her chest, nuzzling his nose into her collar as he waiting for his breathing to even out.
“Someone’s gonna come looking for us,” Y/n chuckled as she combed her fingers through his hair. She could feel his smile against her skin before he huffed out a breath.
“Yeah, and I really don’t feel like being murdered by your brothers tonight.” Jensen placed a kiss to the underside of her jaw before standing up and separating himself from her. He adjusted himself quickly before grabbing her suit for her. Y/n struggled to get the wet garment back on, needing the help of her husband to straighten the material back out.
Jensen peeked out the door into the dark hallway to ensure the coast was clear before they exited the laundry room. He slipped his fingers between hers and pulled her along with him and back out to enjoy the fire.
“Well, well, well, look who is holding hands again.” Jeff piped up from the other side of the fire. He had his youngest dead asleep in his lap as he chuckled at his baby sister.
“Oh,” Y/n laughed as Jensen fell back into his original seat, pulling his wife down with him to sit across his lap. “Can’t stay mad at this face for too long.” Leaning down, she pinched his chin between two fingers and brought his lips to hers, the couple both smiling into the kiss.

As the band moved off stage and back to the table where Carrie and Julie were sitting, the adrenaline still coursed through Violet’s body. She felt amazing. That whole performance was electric and the vibe the crowd gave off as she sang to them was something she didn’t know she was craving.
“Violet Sunset?” Julie asked when they reached the table, her eyebrows raised at the lead guitarist who shrugged.
“Sunset Curve was dead and Violet brought us back to life,” he replied and his eyes flicked towards the girl. “It was only right…”
Violet couldn’t suppress the smile on her lips. He was such a kind, considerate person and she hated that she had hurt him. Then again, he had hurt her too. In a different way and technically, it wasn’t even him but still… Seeing his face reminded her of that day.
“You were pretty amazing up there, Vi,” Alex complimented as he sat down next to Carrie.
Reggie scoffed. “Pretty amazing? Dude, she rocked that stage!” The excitement in his voice made Violet smile like an absolute idiot. Reggie was the best moral support himbo she could ever ask for.
“Told you,” Carrie chimed in, smiling proudly. “You’re magic.”
“Yeah,” Luke agreed, capturing Violet’s attention again. He still had that same smile on his face. Tender. Lovesick. “She is magic.”
While Violet and Luke disappeared in each other’s eyes, Carrie, Julie and Alex exchanged knowing glances. Something was happening between those two and everyone could see it. All the sparks and fireworks went off when those two looked at each other. There was no denying it anymore.
Bobby saw it too, but he didn’t like it as much as the others did. That kiss they had shared meant something to him. Apparently, it didn’t mean as much to her. It wasn’t like they had talked about it since it had happened, but still. Bobby liked her. A lot. This was a completely different version of Violet than the one he had known for years. It wasn’t the Violet Luke thought she was. And it bothered Bobby.
It bothered Bobby for the rest of the night. While they chat and drink and watch the other performances and criticize them, Luke and Violet couldn’t stop staring longingly at one another as they made fun of other people. It bothered Bobby that she was having fun with Luke instead of him. Bobby was jealous, and he knew it. Carrie knew it too.
“Can you put that frown upside down and be happy for her?” she muttered towards her brother, making sure no one else could hear. “You know what she’s been through and how hard it’s been to not see Luke as that jerk from her universe, so for once, please, be happy for her.”
Bobby grunted. “Are we just gonna ignore the fact you completely changed since Violet turned up here?” he said in a hushed voice. Carrie was taken aback by his sudden confession. “Since when do you care about other people’s feelings?”
“Since I learned people were allowed to have them,” she retorted, sassily.
Her brother hummed. “And who taught you that?”
Carrie’s eyes darted from the left to the right as she mulled the question over in her head. “She did…”
“Yeah… She’s changing us for the better because we know she’s a different version from the Violet we know. But Luke doesn’t know and he ain’t changing. Don’t you remember what he did to Sophie, freshman year?”
“He’s not gonna do that to Violet,” Carrie objected. “He’s grown since then. You’re just jealous.”
Bobby huffed as he sat back in his chair. “Fine, I’m jealous, don’t listen to me and let her fall into that trap.” Carrie’s eyebrows knitted together in confusion, but she decided not to react to it any further. Instead, she went back to a conversation she was having with Alex and Flynn.
Bobby wasn’t wrong. She had changed. A few months ago, she wouldn’t be caught dead at the same table with Flynn and Julie. But she knew it made Violet feel more at home since she was best friends with them in her universe. All she wanted to do was to make Violet as comfortable as possible until she went back to her own universe. Even if that meant fighting with Dirty Candy. Even if that meant losing that reputation she had built for herself. Even if that meant losing the fame and popularity.
“Can we go for some food?” Flynn whined after the third band that dared to perform after them. None of them were as good as Violet Sunset, but they earned some gold stars for effort.
“Yes, please!” Reggie exclaimed. “I’m starving!”
The whole gang unanimously agreed and got up from their seats at the table. Dodging people left and right, they went upstairs to the actual pizzeria where they claimed a booth in the far back of the restaurant.
“I actually need some air,” Violet announced before she had sat down. “I’m gonna go outside for a moment.”
“Do you want us to go with?” Carrie asked, a flash of concern running through her eyes.
Violet shook her head, “I’ll be fine,” she said and turned around to make a beeline for the door. She pushed through the door but when she thought she’d hear the door fall shut, she didn’t. It took the door a little longer than it should’ve to shut completely.
Turning her head, she found the reason for the door’s late closing. Luke had followed behind her. He smiled as the two came to a halt near Bobby’s car.
“Sorry,” Luke started. “I needed some air too. I hope you don’t mind?”
Violet smiled and shook her head. “I’d like some company, actually.”
Luke’s eyebrows furrowed for a second before his face softened. “Cool,” he said and hopped up on the hood of Bobby’s car, tapping the spot next to him for Violet to sit. She obeyed his order and wrapped her arms around her legs, which she pressed against her chest.
“Thanks for helping me out there on stage. I couldn’t have done that without you,” she muttered nervously.
Biting his bottom lip, Luke watched her every move. The way her lips moved as she spoke, the way her eyes flicked back and forth as she stared ahead of her. She looked gorgeous. She was gorgeous.
“I think you’d do fine on your own. But it would be pretty stupid of me not to rock out on that stage with you. We sounded amazing together.”
Violet allowed a smile to grow on her lips. Her eyes found his and he, too, was smiling from ear to ear. “We did,” Violet agreed, nodding.
For some reason, she felt nervous then. But a good nervous. The fluttery, stomach twirling kind of nervous. Luke did that to her. He made her feel this way. He made her feel like a stupid teenager in love. She was a teenager, she just wasn’t sure about the ‘in love’ part just yet.
“What do you think about our band name, by the way?” he then asked, completely ignoring the fact that he wanted to kiss her then and there.
“I love it,” Violet replied. “Though I didn’t mind Sunset Curve either.”
Luke couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. He was glad Violet didn’t hold a grudge against him for ignoring her for days after she said ‘no’. He had to admit, it was a bit childish but they were good now and that was all that mattered to him.
“So, tell me,” Luke then started, “If Sunset Curve did become the biggest band this earth had ever seen, whose poster would you have on your wall?” He grinned widely whilst pointing at his own face.
Violet let out a laugh. “You’ve gotta be kidding me!”
“Nope, not kidding. I wanna know!” Luke laughed.
“Okay… Uhm… Reggie,” she answered honestly, which earned her an open-mouthed reaction from Luke. “What?! I have a weakness for bassists!” she defended herself between giggles.
“Maybe I should learn to play the bass then,” Luke said nonchalantly.
The giggles died down but the comfortable vibe didn’t fade. “Maybe you should. I could teach you?”
“You play bass?”
“And drums, and guitar, and piano,” Violet summed up like it was nothing at all.
“Ah, you’re a talented one, aren’t you?” Luke leaned back on his hands.
Violet shrugged. “Just very interested in music, is all.”
A silence fell between the two of them, a comfortable one at that. This felt right. This felt familiar. Like home. Even better than that…
It felt like the place she belonged.
Tumblr media
A gentle tap on the window before it opened made Violet snap out of her thoughts. Ever since she had gotten back into her room after her day spent with Luke, she’d been all up in her own head, thinking about what she had done.
She kissed Luke.
She kissed Luke while she had promised Marcus she wanted him, not Luke. It made her realize that she had been lying to herself for the longest time. That kiss wasn’t just to stop Luke from panicking. She had wanted to kiss him for a while now but never got the courage to do so.
“I thought you were gonna let your hair down, Rapunzel,” Marcus spoke as he climbed in through the window with that charming smile plastered on his face. Once inside, he made a beeline towards the bed where Violet was sitting and kissed her lips.
The simple gesture flipped Violet’s stomach upside down. Now she realized she wanted to keep kissing both boys. Both of them. Because Marcus’ lips were so plump and soft, and Luke was… Luke…
“I don’t let my hair down for just anyone,” she responded, flicking her hair over her shoulder sassily before kissing him again. She could feel him smile in the kiss as he pushed her backwards, onto the mattress. Once on her back, Marcus pulled back from the kiss, hovering over her. He let his gaze caress her skin whilst one hand reached up to stroke a strand of hair away from her face.
One corner of his mouth curled upwards. “You are so gorgeous,” he said and dipped down again to meet her lips once more. Violet felt her stomach churn. Marcus was so nice to her and she had only gone ahead and kissed another guy.
“I gotta tell you something,” she told him, her words swallowed by his mouth.
Marcus pulled back once more. “That you spent the day with Rockstar Patterson? I know,” he said and kissed her again.
Violet’s hands pushed at his chest carefully. “You know?”
“Babe, please, it’s all over the internet,” he replied and sat up again, crawling to the head of the bed, leaning against the mountain of pillows. “I don’t care that you spend time with him. I trust that you are just friends and that you like to spend time together.”
If Violet wasn’t being eaten by her own guilt, she’d be so turned on right now by his nonchalance and utter confidence. “We are, and we just went to the studio to record something for Sunset Curve’s new album,” she told him with a small smile, unable to erase the image of being in a recording booth with Luke.
“I’m glad you had fun,” Marcus said and pulled Violet to his chest. “When were you gonna tell me you’re friends with one of the most famous bands in the world?”
Violet let out a chuckle. “I mean, I couldn’t tell you that in the supermarket when we first met, could I?” Marcus laughed at this too, and it was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard coming out of him – aside from the moans he deliciously elicited the other night. “Imagine me telling you in the cheese aisle I was friends with a mediocre band that happens to be well-known.”
“Mediocre?” Marcus exclaimed. “Medi– Vi, did you even hear their songs? They’re banging!”
“The songs or the boys?”
“Both.”
Violet looked up at him with raised eyebrows. “You’re sexy when you’re so open about your love for other men,” she confessed before pressing multiple kisses to his mouth until he properly caught her lips with his, deepening the kiss.
Whatever happened with Luke had been long forgotten. All thanks to Marcus’ lips. And tongue. And other parts of his physique. She was with Marcus and she liked Marcus. A lot. She wasn’t going to ruin that for one kiss she had shared with Luke.
Not even when Luke didn’t talk to her for days. He was avoiding her, she was sure of it. When she called him, he didn’t pick up. When they were all at the club together, Luke left early. When the girls went to the boys’ rehearsal, he either didn’t show up or left the second she walked into the room.
“What’s up with him?” Carrie questioned when the boy left the rehearsal space for the fifth time that week.
Violet groaned as she plopped onto the sofa. “That’s probably on me,” she admitted. “We… kissed… the other day…” she carefully revealed, her eyes flicking from one person to another to see their reaction.
“How am I only finding out about this now?!” Carrie squealed, shooting up on the sofa. “Tell me everything!”
“What about Marcus?” Julie asked instead.
All while Reggie opted for the, “Why is he mad about that?”
“I don’t know – We went to the studio together the other day and recorded a song and stuff and when he dropped me back home, we found out we’d been papped and Luke freaked out about that –”
“Because he promised our manager he wouldn’t be seen with another girl…” Bobby completed her story, either to clarify for the rest or because it dawned on him.
“Yeah – so… I kissed him, because I read somewhere that when someone’s having a panic attack, you need to distract them, so…”
“So you distracted him with your lips,” Flynn continued, wiggling her eyebrows.
Violet hummed and nodded her head. “And now he’s avoiding me.” Once again, Violet groaned and threw her head against the back of the couch. “I’m sorry, guys. I know you need to practice…”
“It’s fine,” Alex shrugged. “Honestly, we’re used to Luke reacting this way when something bad happens.”
Violet’s eyebrows knitted together, her eyes landing on the drummer a few feet away from her. “What do you mean?”
“Luke’s been avoiding his parents for years,” Reggie explained. “He had an altercation with his mom when the band was just on its way to stardom. He ran out on them and never returned.”
“Okay, I’m gonna ignore the fact you just used the word ‘altercation’,” Alex told his friend before turning back to Violet. “But, yeah, he regrets running out on them, but he’s stubborn. You really have to grab him by the arm before he properly faces whatever happened.”
Violet perked up at this. This might be her unfinished business. Not only un-jerk Luke, but bring him back to his parents, make him admit that he regrets running out on them, bring them together again.
“That’s it,” she muttered and, without saying anything else, she left the rehearsal space to go and look for Luke. It took her a while, but eventually found him on the balcony with a cigarette between his fingers. She scoffed and leaned her shoulder against the doorframe while watching him for a moment. “Does that help with the whole brooding thing you got going on?”
Her voice made him jump, his head snapping around to find her standing in the doorway with a smirk on her face. “Doesn’t seem to keep you away,” he muttered and tapped the butt of the cigarette to get rid of the excess before placing it between his lips, inhaling and blowing it out.
“You’re gonna need to try a lot harder to do that,” she told him as she pushed herself off the door to take a seat next to him on the lawn chair. “But it does answer the question if you’re avoiding me or not.”
Luke chuckled and shook his head in disbelief, but didn’t react any further.
“Riddle me this, Lukas,” Violet started and grabbed the cigarette from between Luke’s fingers to take a drag herself. “We went out on a date, I didn’t wanna go out on a second one and started dating someone else, you get jealous, we kiss and then you avoid me. Make me understand this, please…”
Luke let out a laugh. “You’re joking right?” Violet looked him dead in the eye, giving him an answer to that question. “I am insanely in love with you, but you’re with Marcus and I gotta respect that. So, I started avoiding you because I can’t stop thinking about you and whenever I see you, I just wanna kiss you again.”
Violet was taken aback for a moment. She hadn’t expected that answer to come out of his mouth. “You’re in love with me?” she asked, just so she was certain she heard it right. Luke took advantage of her state and stole the cigarette back. “Luke – don’t you remember what you did to me, so many years ago?”
“Yeah, I do. But I didn’t mean to hurt you. And besides, that was years ago. I’d like to think we’ve grown, don’t you?”
“I don’t know, have you grown enough to go back to your parents and make it up to them?” Luke’s head snapped up at this. Now he was taken aback. He hadn’t expected her to bring that up, let alone know about. That was after they stopped talking altogether.
“The boys told me,” she explained. “If you think you’ve grown so much to make me give you another chance, I’d like to think you’ve grown enough to go and apologize to your parents.” Swinging her legs off the chair, she got up, hovering over Luke. “Think about it.”
Without waiting for an answer from him, Violet walked back inside and downstairs where the others resided in the practice room. She had a good feeling about their chat, she just might have gotten through to him. And if Luke and his parents make up, she might just be able to get back to her universe. Back home.
“You okay?” Bobby asked when Violet reentered the rehearsal space.
“Yeah, I’m alright. I had a good chat with him,” she replied with a smile and returned to her spot on the sofa. “I think I might’ve gotten through to him about his parents too.”
“Yes, you did,” Luke’s voice sounded, causing everyone in the room to look up at the boy who had just entered the room. With his hands jammed in the pockets of his jeans, he shrugged. “I – I think you’re right. About my parents. I should go and talk to them, tell them – especially my mom – what I’ve been wanting to tell them all along. I wasn’t fair to them. I was young and dumb and I shouldn’t have walked away. Or I shouldn’t have stayed away, but I was stubborn and instead of telling them, I wrote a song about it…”
Violet’s interest piqued as the boy picked up his acoustic guitar. He tuned it for a few seconds and then started playing. A soft, melancholic melody floated out of the instruments and through the room.
“First things first We start the scene in reverse All of the lines rehearsed Disappeared from my mind When things got loud One of us running out I should've turned around But I had too much pride”
Violet felt a lump in her throat and swallowed it. This was going to be one of those songs she wouldn’t be able to listen to without crying.
“No time for goodbyes Didn't get to apologize Pieces of a clock that lies broken”
The other boys moved to their instruments while Luke walked to where the microphones were still set up from the rehearsal they were supposed to have. His gaze didn’t leave Violet’s, which didn’t make her feel any better.
“If I could take us back, if I could just do that And write in every empty space the words "I love you" in replace Then maybe time would not erase me If you could only know I'd never let you go And the words I most regret are the ones I never meant to leave Unsaid Emily”
The boys joined in on their instruments, giving the song all the more power to completely wreck the girls in the audience during that rehearsal.
“Silent days, mysteries and mistakes Who'd be the first to break? Guess we're alike that way He said, she said Conversations in my head And that's just where they're gonna stay forever”
A single tear rolled off Violet’s cheek when Carrie reached for her hand. Looking up, Violet noticed that she, too, had tears streaming down her face. As did Flynn and Julie. All four girls were going through the motions with this song.
“If I could take us back, if I could just do that And write in every empty space the words "I love you" in replace Then maybe time would not erase me If you could only know I'd never let you go And the words I most regret are the ones I never meant to leave Unsaid Emily”
All four boys hummed a little during the instrumental bit, and even then Violet could feel every emotion Luke was feeling. He was so good at translating what he felt into song and let the audience feel exactly what he was feeling.
The other boys stopped playing for a moment, letting Luke’s acoustic guitar do its job as Luke lapsed into the chorus again. His voice sounded more vulnerable this time, more powerful, and it sent shivers down Violet’s spine.
“If I could take us back, if I could just do that And write in every empty space the words "I love you" in replace Then maybe time would not erase me”
They then joined in again for the last part of the chorus, and as the power of the music grew, so did Luke’s voice. Violet even noticed his eyes glossing over.
“If you could only know I'd never let you go And the words I most regret are the ones I never meant to leave Unsaid Emily”
The last chords were played and the last cymbals hit until the song faded out. A silence fell over the room. Nobody made a sound except for the occasional sniffle from the emotional girls on the sofa.
“I–” Luke broke the silence. “I’ve never had any regrets in life. Not one. Except for running out on my parents, especially my mom. I wish I could tell her how I feel, but I don’t think she’d want anything to do with me anymore.”
Violet wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand before getting up and making a beeline towards Luke. Cupping his face with her hands, she forced him to look her in the eye. “Your mother loves you, Luke. She adores the heck out of you and I’m sure that if you rang her doorbell and told her what you’ve always wanted to tell her, tell her those words you left unsaid, she’d forgive you for running out on you.”
“How are you so sure of that?” Luke asked in a hushed tone, followed by a sniffle as he, too, had started crying.
Violet chuckled, “Just trust me on this, okay?”
Only the girls knew what she meant by this. Luke’s mom must love him in her universe. They had a great bond in her universe, Bobby had told her that. He had told her how amazing they were together and how he wished he had such a relationship with his mother. The Wilsons didn’t even know who their mother was, so Bobby was extra alert when it came to that subject.
“Hey guys!” Marcus’ voice rang through the room, making Violet jerk back from holding Luke’s face. “What’s up?!” he called out as he approached the band and Violet.
The girl wiped her tears and smiled up at the boy that had crashed rehearsal. “Hey babe,” Violet greeted and pecked Marcus’ cheek. “How’d you get in here?”
“Their maid let me in,” he replied excitedly, “They have a maid!”
“Actually, that’s our manager –” Reggie corrected him, but Marcus wasn’t listening.
“You ready to head off?” he asked Violet instead, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
Violet’s gaze flicked back to Luke and nodded her head. “Yeah. Let’s go,” she sniffled and, as Marcus guided her out of the room, Violet’s eyes found Luke’s again and again. He looked sad, but relieved for some reason.
She was glad Luke had opened up to her. He got really vulnerable with her just then, something Violet hadn’t yet done with him. Or anyone. Hanging out with Carrie, she learned to keep those feelings all bottled up. Keep your head up. Smile. Don’t let anyone see that you’re broken inside.
That vulnerability was hot, and it made Violet think that maybe, just maybe, she would have to return that gesture. As a thank you for opening up to her. To show that she wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable either.
She had to show she wanted to be somebody too.

seventeen and strung out on confusion; chapter 2/4
So, I don’t really like this chapter as much as the other one but it’s fine. :/ I don’t have the patience to redo it, so this is what you get :)
Warnings: Homophobia, child abuse, non-graphic description of wounds, panic attacks
chapter 1
---
Alex didn’t quite know how long he’d been curled up on the sidewalk when a figure began approaching him; but he was shivering and crying and really not in the mood to be murdered. The person may not have been headed directly towards him, but they sure were biking fast in his direction and once again, being kicked out and killed on the same night didn’t sound like much fun. So, swearing underneath his breath, Alex stood up and began jogging away, still unsure of where he was headed.
The bike came barrelling towards Alex but came to a screeching halt immediately after passing him.
“Alex?!” The person, who had a guitar strapped to their back, hopped off the bike and stumbled towards Alex.
“Luke?” Alex whispered, baffled. “What are you-” But he didn’t get to finish his sentence before Luke wrapped him in a hug, burying his face in Alex’s shoulder. Alex decided not to mention Luke’s damp, red cheeks.
“Dude, what are you doing?” Luke asked, pulling away.
Alex snorted at that. “I could ask you the same thing.” He shoved his hands in his pockets and began rocking on his heels, counting down the seconds until Luke read him like he always does and Alex had to stop him from marching back up the block and yelling at the Mercers until his voice was hoarse.
“Your parents,” Luke muttered, his voice hardening, bitter. “They kicked you out didn’t they?” Luke didn’t get angry very often. Sure, he got upset and disappointed and frustrated, but he wasn’t one to get genuinely furious. He was now though. Alex grabbed his wrist and shook his head.
“Yes, but Luke, please don’t.”
Luke narrowed his eyes, but backed off. “I’m gonna kill them,” He hissed beneath his breath.
“Not if you die from the cold. What are you even doing out here?”
Luke grew quiet, his gaze shifting to the ground. “Nothing, nothing I was just… I was headed to Bobby’s. The studio.”
Alex nodded, internally berating himself for not having thought of that. But he didn’t want to bother anyone. Staying in the studio for the night was entirely different from asking to live there. But he didn’t have much of a choice.
Luke, somehow sensing Alex’s thoughts, sighed. “I’m gonna go grab your bike,”he said, giving Alex a quick hug before turning to walk up the sidewalk.
“Luke, you don’t have to-”
“Nah, I do. I’m not gonna make you go back there, and we sure as hell aren’t walking all the way to Bobby’s.”
“Fine. But you need to tell me what happened!” Alex shouted after him, but he was already far enough to pretend he hadn’t heard anything.
---
Alex’s hands were practically numb after 10 minutes of biking, and his backpack felt like it had doubled in size. Not to mention the only light was people’s Christmas decorations and the occasional street light, and he’d only ever gone to Bobby’s in the day so he was relying about 80% on muscle memory. All in all, not a great situation.
“Dude, why the fuck is Bobby’s house so far away?” Alex complained, adjusting his grip on his bike handles in hopes that it’d bring back some sort of feeling in his fingers.
Luke shrugged. He’d been uncharacteristically quiet the whole ride and was yet to explain why he’d run off in the middle of the night, but Alex knew he’d open up in time… hopefully. If it had to be pried out of him, it would; but Luke was never one to keep secrets. At least Alex leaving in the middle of the night wouldn’t take much explanation, except to Bobby’s parents. No one had dared say it out loud, but for the whole year it’d felt like the seconds Alex had before being kicked out were just slowly running out. And this was the last straw.
“Can we- can we stop for a minute?” Alex breathed, his legs burning. “I have like, no stamina.”
Luke chuckled weakly, coming to a slow stop. They leaned their bikes on the side of the curb before sitting down, feeling relieved that they recognized the area; it was just a few blocks from Reggie and roughly another 5 minutes to Bobby’s place.
Alex let out a shaky breath. “It doesn’t even feel real,” he whispered, dropping his head and burying his hands in the pockets of his hoodie. “God, they kicked me out.” It was finally settling in and Alex felt sick. “Dad wasn’t even there. It was- it was just Mom and she… She didn’t even seem sorry. She looked at me like I was nothing.” He choked down a sob. “Like I was never her son. I didn’t think she’d ever hate me, but look at where we are now.” Alex didn’t bother fighting the tears this time. His shoulders shook and he brought his knees up to his chest, breathing in slowly in hopes to prevent a panic attack.
Luke moved in closer, wrapping an arm around Alex’s shoulder and squeezing. “Hey, it’ll be alright. We’ve got each other. And Bobby, and Reggie-”
“Luke, Alex?”
Both boys snapped to attention; they would’ve recognized that voice anywhere.
“Reg?” Luke stood up and took two long strides to meet Reggie, clasping his thin, hunched shoulders. “Shit. Reggie, dude.”
Alex wiped his eyes furiously as he walked over to where Reggie and Luke stood and he once again recognized the pure anger dripping from Luke’s words. Then Reggie moved closer to the streetlight and Alex’s heart plummeted to his feet.
Reggie’s face was blotchy and pink and his eyes were swollen from crying. His hair was slightly damp and Alex felt sick upon seeing the shards of glass in it. There was dried blood on his cheek and Alex was afraid for him to take his jacket off, but Luke tore it off anyway, inspecting the bruises running up and down Reggie’s forearms and wrapped around his wrists.
Reggie squeaked in protest and snatched the jacket back, his hands shaking.
“They are dead,” Luke muttered coldly. He gestured to both Alex and Reggie. “I am going to actually kill both of your guys’ parents.”
Reggie looked over to Alex. “What did Alex’s parents…” He trailed off, face darkening in realization.
“Where were you gonna go?” Alex asked quietly, his grip on his fannypack strap tightening.
Reggie shrugged and went to sit down on the curb. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “But I can’t just leave forever. Sammy… I can’t leave him alone with them.” He shook his head. “I’d hate myself if I just left him there.”
“Olivia moved out last year and left you guys alone!” Luke countered, sitting beside Reggie. “Reg, dude, you can’t stay there!”
Reggie’s expression hardened in a way Alex had never seen. Reggie Peters was basically a human puppy and it seemed Alex had gotten all to used to that fact. “Yea but she knew we had each other, Luke. You don’t get it. Sammy’s just 13, I can’t just leave him. I can’t.” Reggie’s tone grew more hopeless at the last sentence, his lip quivering.
“Fine,” Luke grumbled. “But at least come with us tonight. We’re going to Bobby’s.”
“But what if-”
“No buts. You’re hurt and you smell like beer, we’re not gonna leave you out here.”
“But Sammy-”
“Sammy’ll be ok,” Alex cut in. He squeezed Reggie shoulder and gave a half-hearted smile. “He’s a tough kid.”
Reggie nodded. A quiet sob ripped through him and he buried his head in his knees, leaving damp spots on his jeans from his hair which would probably smell like alcohol for a week.
Alex lay an arm around Reggie’s shoulder and Luke chuckled. “Yea, group hug,” he whispered feebly, joining the embrace.
The temperature was rapidly dropping and Alex could feel Luke shivering and Reggie’s teeth chattering, his own feet growing numb in his shoes. But for just a split second, none of that mattered. He didn’t have to look to know that they were all crying and that Reggies hair was sticking to his cheek and Luke’s guitar case was digging into someone’s shoulder. They were a family. A stupid, dysfunctional, scarily codependent family, but still. It was something.
---
March, 1995
Despite protest, Bobby’s parents had started giving Alex and Luke monthly allowances; claiming that if they were gonna live there, they were family, not guests. Reggie refused to accept the money; he was still returning to his house at least two nights a week for fear that his parents would take their anger out on Sammy. But the money meant that Alex was finally able to get a new hoodie; one that wasn’t too tight around the shoulders and didn’t ride up every time he lifted his arms. It was nice, too. Sure it’d taken a couple months of allowance to buy, but it was soft and comfortable and his favorite shade of pink.
“Alex,” Luke whined, drawing out the vowel like a small child begging for candy. “You can’t leave us like this!”
“Luke-”
“It’s betrayal! You- I thought you were our friend!”
“Stop being dramatic,” Alex replied, smacking Luke’s shoulder lightly.
“Ow.”
“It’s one band practice. If I don’t retake this test, I’ll fail Algebra.”
“Algebra is a stupid subject anyway,” Luke pouted, kicking a rock angrily.
“Bobby’s mom got ice cream,” Alex said. “Now go.” He waved Luke off, smiling impatiently.
Luke trudged away from Alex’s locker and towards the exit, his head hung low. “You’re the worst,” He shouted before walking out of sight.
Alex sighed and chuckled lightly as he turned back to rifle through his locker in search of a pencil; he’d lost his favorite one in English earlier that day (more like Bobby stole it, but same difference). He didn’t like pens because the concept of not being able to fix mistakes was more daunting than it probably should be, and he refused to use any non-mechanical pencils (“Shut it Luke, I’m allowed to be picky about my pencils!”) because he hated having to sharpen them constantly and he had a bad habit of pressing down too hard and breaking the lead. So he couldn't find a damn pencil and Mr. Thomas had said he had to be in classroom by 4:30 if he wanted to retake the test but he couldn’t find a stupid pencil. Alex swallowed and breathed in shakily, glancing up at the clock which seemed to be moving too fast because there’s no way it was already 4:25. Logically, he could just ask Mr. Thomas if he could borrow a pencil, but he didn’t want to be a bother, and he knew there was a pencil somewhere in here.
Alex cried out in frustration, slipping his backpack from his shoulders and unzipping the small front pocket which he’d reserved specifically for writing utensils. Nothing. Ok. Fine, he’d just borrow one. It isn’t that hard to ask to use a pencil. Right.
Halfway across the hallway, Alex heard snickering drifting from around the corner. He froze and gripped his backpack straps tighter. It was useless, willing himself to keep walking. Not when that laughing was sickeningly familiar. God, Alex hated football players.
“Awe look he got a new jaaacket.” Someone -Alex refused to try and decipher who- cooed mockingly.
Alex didn’t turn around.
“Y’know when you stopped wearing the other one, we were really hoping your parents had finally beat some sense into you.”
Alex looked at the clock. 4:28. He willed himself to move forward, ignoring the twisting in his stomach. He played out the beat to Now or Never on his backpack straps.
“Hey! We’re talking to you!”
Why was the hallway so long? Alex had begun to think it had doubled in size since he’d started walking. His hoodie felt too hot all of the sudden and he could practically feel someone breathing down the back of his neck. They were talking to him, but it was muffled, like he was underwater. He tried breathing in slowly. 4:29. His steps quickened.
“F*g!”
He couldn’t breathe. Alex couldn’t breathe and he felt like someone had stabbed him in the stomach and was twisting the knife over and over and over again. 4:30. Oh god. They were yelling at him and drawing closer and closer and now he’d missed his chance and was gonna fail algebra and they’d call his parents and then the school would know he’d been kicked out and-
Someone had hit him. He wished he could pinpoint where, but his entire body was numb and throbbing and everything was blurry. He wondered briefly if the shouting was in his head or out of it. And this might be where he could say he’d blacked out, but that wasn’t quite what had happened. He stumbled blindly across the rest of the hall, mostly on autopilot, unable to see through tears and why was he crying??? He never really fainted, but no matter how hard he tried, Alex couldn’t remember what’d happened next.
---
“Alex!”
That was Luke, Alex was sure of it.
“ ‘Lex, come on.”
Reggie shook Alex’s shoulder and his vision began to clear. Oh.
“What, why am I in the studio?” He asked frantically. “How did I- my test!” He stood up and not bothering to figure out why he was dizzy, Alex rushed to the doorway.
“Nope.” Bobby clasped his shoulder tightly and steered him back to the couch. “Sit down, idiot, you almost passed out.”
“Dude, who punched you?” Luke asked, scooting in closer to Alex and gazing furiously at the bruise on his face.
Alex shrugged. “I don’t- I’m not- it’s…”
“Mr. Thomas said you came into his classroom and tried to ask for the test but he wouldn’t let you since you’d just been beat up and then Bobby heard you in the room cause, cause he came up to the school to give you a ride so you didn’t have to walk-”
“Reggie slow down, you’re gonna give him another panic attack!” Luke scolded, swatting Reggie’s chest and shoving him lightly.
Bobby sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Mr. Thomas is letting you retake the test next week, drink some water.”
Alex took the glass gratefully and took a hesitant sip. He set the water down and breathed in, settling into the couch, still tense. “ ‘M sorry,” he muttered.
“Sorry? Dude what?” Luke looked at Alex, completely baffled. “What are you apologizing for?”
“I made you cancel practice so I could take my test but I didn’t even take it.”
“Don’t be stupid,” Reggie chided. “We’re not mad at you-”
“Yea it’s whatever asshat punched you that we’re mad at.”
“Bobby, we’re not killing anyone.”
“Yea please don’t get yourself arrested for me,” Alex laughed softly.
Bobby shook his head and flopped down on the couch beside Reggie. “Fine.”
“Hey,” Luke shook Alex gently. “You want some chocolate? Reg got some of that fancy stuff-”
“No, I draw the line at giving him my chocolates,” Reggie complained, reaching across Alex to slap a hand over Luke’s mouth. “Ew! Dude, you licked me!” Reggie whined loudly as he shook his hand, pretending to gag. “That’s just low.”
“Shut up.”
“You shut up.”
“You’re both stupid.”
Alex let his head fall against the back of the couch, a small smile creeping onto his face.

Chapter 10: Virgin’s Bower Means ‘Filial Love’
The three of them were sitting around the dinner table eating, when Philip asked: “Are you my dad now too?”
Both paused and Alex looked at Thomas with wide eyes, clearlynot sure how to explain that question while Thomas was frozen in shock. After a moment of finding his wits he choked: “Why are you asking, Pip?”
“When I was talking to Theo about how you guys love each other now and then she says her cousins have parents who don’t love each other anymore, but they have new people they love and they are her cousins parents now too, so since you two love each other now does that mean your my dad too?” Pip explained his thought process.
“Well, uh- I- Thomas?” Alex said, not wanting to make decisions for him.
“What do you-” Thomas started to ask Alex why the fuck he was shoving this conversation on him, before cutting himself off and taking a calming breath. This was not how he had imagined his evening to go when he said yes to dinner.
Philip just watched the two of them with a confused expression, not sure why they were being so weird about his question.
“I don’t know, Pip,” Thomas finally answered calmly, “I can never replace your Daddy, John, and I can never tell you how you should feel about me. It’s honestly up to you.”
Alex mentally thanked Thomas so hard for coming up with that answer, which saved them both from answering.
Sure, he would love to not be the lone parent for Pip, but he would never ask that of Thomas. He knew the other loved his son and Thomas had assured him often enough that he enjoyed taking care of him, but being a dad was a whole other step.
A step that was more commitment, both to Philip and Alex. So Alex could never ask it, Pip however…
“Up to me?” Philip asked.
“Yeah, kiddo,” Thomas nodded, “If you’re more comfortable with me being your Uncle that is totally fine, but if you want me to be your dad, then I’m up for that.”
Alex hadn’t known that, it seemed like Thomas had thought about it a bit more than him. He had suppressed the thought every time it came up, not wanting to get his hopes up only to be disappointed.
Thomas, on the other hand, had had the thought in the back of his mind ever since it had gotten serious. He knew that if this was long term, one day this decision would come. The only reason he’d never brought it up was because he didn’t want Alex to think he wanted to replace John and because it would make them that much more serious.
And he didn’t want to scare Alex off bybeing more intense, so since Alex hadn’t said anything, neither had he. Until Philip had brought it up.
Both watched Philip as he thought about Thomas’s words. Alex was glad that Philip seemed to take this serious and was actually contemplating it, instead of just rushing into making a decision. A skill he had picked up more from Eliza than him if he was honest.
“I’d like for you to be my dad,” Philip finally broke the silence.
Alex was both relieved and tense at the revelation. Would Thomas really be okay with it? Was he just pretending and was it now going to be awkward? But- but what if Thomas meant it? What if he wasn’t going to leave?
Thomas smiled and held out his hand for Philip to shake: “Then I’m honored to be your dad. Here, we’ll shake on it.”
Philip shook his hand enthusiastically, then said: “But I can’t call you Papa or Daddy, I already have those, but dad sounds boring.”
“Well,” Thomas offered, “I call my mom, Ma, so you could call me Da, if you want.”
“Da,” Philip tried it out, then grinned toothily, “Da is good.”
And with that it was apparently settled for Philip, who went back to eating his dinner as if he hadn’t just made a big change in their life.
Alex eyes searched for Thomas and when they met, he frowned concerned, then quirked a brow to ask: ‘You okay with this?’
In return Thomas did the smile that made his eyes crinkle and nodded, even doing a small thumbs up. Alex received the message: ‘Yes.’
With the confirmation Alex allowed himself to smile back. Though he had hoped, a small cynical part of his brain had never believed Thomas would agree to this, had never believed he wouldn’t be alone.
He knew he was selling his friends short, God knows he wouldn’t have been able to raise Philip the way he had if they hadn’t stepped up the way they did. All the times they picked up Philip, watched him, took him out for fun days, had saved him so many times, but they would never be John.
Not that Thomas could be.
It was just that Thomas came close, he was so different from John, yet in all the places Alex needed him, wanted him. He fit.
When Alex was tired, Thomas got up. When Alex was busy, Thomas made time. When Alex couldn't handle it, Thomas stepped up.
The dynamic was vastly different to what he and John had and Alex didn’t think he would ever find something like that. But that didn’t matter. Thomas wasn’t the same, but Alex wasn’t the same as he was back then either.
They worked well together and Alex would never want a new John, because no one could be a new John. Alex wanted a new chance at living the life, they wanted and he could see himself living it with Thomas.
Philip might be oblivious to how much he just did, but neither mind as their – their– son happily ate his dinner while telling them about the haunted slide at his school.
Later that evening, when Philip was tucked into bed, Alex checked in again: “Hey, I don’t wanna make things awkward and I am totally on board if you are, but I do have to ask. Are you truly okay with being a dad to Pip?”
Thomas paused to think. This calmed Alex more than he would think, but Alex appreciated it when people actually thought about his words before responding that way he knew they actually meant it when they replied, which was great when it was about emotional things. Which he was bad at.
“Yeah, I’ve always wanted to be a dad, honestly. And Philip is the best kid I could hope for,” he responded finally, “I also meant it when I said I don’t want to replace John. I’m gonna be me and I’m gonna try to do my best for Pip, if you let me.”
“God, every time I think I can’t love you more, asshole.”
“The insult and statement are really messing with me, du-” he got cut off by a kiss and when Alex broke he said: “I’m going to ignore that you tried to call me dude there, bro.”
“I hate you.”
“And I live to please,” Alex smirked, a smirk that fell ashe sincerely said, “I’m very grateful for what you do. With Pip.”
“I do it with love and I mean that,” Thomas dropped a kiss on his head, beforechangingthe subject, “Now Angie told me during lunch that you once claimed Money, Money, Moneywas ABBA’s best song and I’m going to need you to defend that statement, because that is clearly incorrect.”
“Oh and what do you think it is then?” Alex challenged.
“Waterloo, duh.”
“The historical bullshittery in that song alone is enough to disqualify your position, try again.”
“And your opinion is so great because…? Eh, riddle me that.”
“Money, Money, Moneyradicalized every young queer person who watched Mamma Miaand you cannot convince me otherwise.”
“Says nothing about the quality of the song, baby. Waterloois and remains superior.”
They squabbled while they cleaned up the kitchen, finally ending up in playing the songs, which then developed into a karaoke and dance party, but they will never speak of that again.
When they got to the office the next time, Alex stopped by Angelica’s office and leaned against the door. She looked up, unimpressed, and said: “What?”
“You know, if you gossip about my relationship behind my back, you really gotta learn how to pick your dates,” he told her condescendingly.
“What?”
“Developments happen when you’re away, sweetheart,” he started to walk away with a smirk.
“Alexander come back here and tell me,” she flew out her chair and hurried after him, “Alexander Hamilton, don’t you dare set another step without telling me everything.”
Thomas heard the ruckus and poked his head out of the door: “Are you terrorizing Angie again, Alex?”
“Nah, just extorting a cookie and free dinner out of her,” Alex smiled sweetly.
“Are those your demands?” Angelica asked sharply.
“Yeah, Philip’s eating at Eliza’s tonight, hope you have time,” Alex blew her a kiss before sashaying down the hall, when he passed by Thomas’s office the man rolled his eyes: “Menace.”
“Come get your cookie at coffee time,” Angelica called after him.
Alex saluted, before settling down in his office with a satisfied look on his face as he got to work.
The day passed by as Alex typed his documents, went to his meeting, ate lunch with Thomas, before driving to Angelica’s place where he told her everything that had happened yesterday.
At the end of the night he bid her goodbye: “Bye, Angie. It was nice to catch up again.”
“Yeah, the same, ‘Lex, don’t be a stranger,” Angelica hugged him and kissed his cheeks, before telling him to say hi to Eliza and Maria from her and to tell Eliza she’s rude.
The drive to Eliza and Maria’s home was uneventful, but when he pulled up to their house, Eliza was already waiting for him in the doorway. She had her arms crossed and when Alex was close enough to hear, she said: “Why did I get a text from Angie reading: ‘One of Pip’s dads is coming your way’ winky face, she typed a winky face, Alex.”
“And you really think I’m not here to tell you and pick up Pip, you think so lowly of me, ‘Liza,” he grinned.
“Oh thank God, thought I was going to force you to tell me,” she sighed with relief, Eliza was never one for forcing people. Though she could be scary if she wanted to.
“Didn’t Pip say anything? I’m surprised, he’s usually a talker,” Alex said, stepping inside.
As if on cue, Philip came running. He threw himself into Alex’s arms and said: “Papa! We had dino nuggets for dinner and I drew everyone, wanna see?”
“Of course I wanna see, buddy,” Alex smiled.
Philip bounded away to get the drawing and Eliza asked: “So what could he have said?”
“I think he will already tell you, did you ask about the drawing yet?” Alex replied.
“No, not yet. He’s been working on it ever since he got here, but he wanted to finish it first,” she said as she led him to the kitchen table.
“Ah, how are you and Maria, by the way?”
“Good, Maria is at the orphanage today, so it’s just me here. We’re doing a drama program in the weekends currently, so that’s a lot of fun,” she told him.
“Oh, wow, sounds fun. Are the kids enjoying it?”
“I think so. We got a few actors running around, that’s for sure,” Eliza smiled.
“Well, I’ll be sure to keep an eye on movies in the future,” Alex grinned back, “Angelica says hi to you both, by the way, and I had to tell you you’re rude. She’ll kill me if I forget.”
Eliza’s smile turned exasperated and she replied: “I’ll call her tonight, haven’t spoken to her in a while, you know how she gets.”
Alex chuckled at that, but didn’t get to reply, because Philip came back with the drawing. He put it on the table and climbed into the chair next to Alex, so that he could show his Papa the figures. It weren’t stick figures anymore and most of them were pretty recognizable.
Pip pointed at first figure and began to explain: “This is Grandpa George and Grandma Martha and they’re holding hands and next to them is Uncle Laf, he’s annoying Grandpa George, but he doesn’t mind.”
Alex saw that the drawn Lafayette had a speech bubble with senseless scribbles in it.
“And then on the other side you have Uncle Herc and then Auntie Maria and Auntie Eliza, Auntie Maria is giving Auntie Eliza a kiss, like she does whenever she leaves.”
“Is she going then?” Alex asked.
“Maybe, I don’t know yet, maybe I’ll add a portal behind her,” Philip answered, “Next to Auntie Eliza is Auntie Peggy, she’s poking you. You see Papa?”
Alex studied the figure that was meant to represent him. It was a green blob with his beard and long hair in a messy bun, who was holding hands with the figure he assumed was Thomas. The Peggy figure was indeed poking his cheek. He smirked: “I can see that, Pip. Very well done.”
“Thank you, I was gonna make Auntie Angelica next to you, but she is now standing next to Uncle Laf and being tired about his actions,” Pip explained, making the both of them laugh.
“Who is that?” Alex asked, spotting a figure in the sky.
“That’s Auntie Martha, Da said she’s dancing with the stars, so I drew her with the stars and here is Daddy with angels,” Pip told him.
Alex now recognized the colors as one of the dresses Martha wore in the pictures in Thomas’s house, then also the outfit John wore in the picture on the mantle piece.
He was a bit chocked up about it and was luckily saved from replying by Eliza, who repeated in a questioning tone: “Da?”
“Yeah, Da’s here,” Pip pointed to the magenta figure with big hair holding Alex’s hand, “He’s holding Papa’s hand and I’m in between them.”
“Do you mean Thomas?” Eliza asked, giving Alex a look that meant ‘you could have at least given me a bit of information’. She was piecing it together along with Angelica’s text.
“Yeah, he’s my dad now too, isn’t that cool, Auntie Eliza?” Pip answered excitedly.
“Very cool,” Eliza smiled, “When did that happen?”
“Yesterday,” Philip informed her with a smile, “I asked if he was my dad now too during dinner and he said I got to pick and I said yes, so now he’s my Da.”
“Oh wow,” Eliza glared at Alex. The message was received: ‘We’ll talk about this later.’
Alex just rolled his eyes and just focused on letting Philip explain the drawing in more detail, before getting them home.
While that was all happening, Thomas ate dinner by himself for the first time in a while. The house didn’t feel that much like home anymore and Thomas didn’t really want to acknowledge it, so when he had finished his dinner, he decided to call his Ma.
“Hello, this is Jane Jefferson speaking,” she picked up.
“Hi, Ma, how are you?” Thomas greeted her warmly, ever since his call after his birthday they’d been calling more and Thomas found their relationship improving despite the distance.
“Ah, Tommy, I’m good, I’m good, how are you?” she replied, then cheekily added, “How’s your loverboy?”
“Ma,” Thomas whined.
“What you never tell me anything, I can ask.”
“I do tell you almost everything,” Thomas refuted, “I’m actually currently calling you to tell you things.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I- uhm, I guess, I’m a dad now,” Thomas decided to start there.
“What?”
Thomas expanded: “Philip calls me Da, so that happened.”
“Oh my God, I officially have agrandson, how exciting,” his Ma gushed.
“I guess so,” Thomas chuckled.
“Am I meeting my grandson and my future son-in-law anytime soon or are you still not asking them?” she inquired.
“They’re also coming to Monticello this summer,” Thomas was glad he could answer that question this time, “And can you please not refer to Alex like that when we’re there.”
“And why not, is it not true?” Thomas could practically see his mother’s amused look.
“It’s embarrassing, Ma,” he was also not above pleading and whining.
“I’m not embarrassing.”
“You are very embarrassing.”
“We’ll see that when you get here, will you and Alex be sharing a room?”
“Yeah.”
“No funny business under my roof.”
“Ma!”
And they talked like that for a bit more. Thomas was both excited and extremely nervous to go home again that summer. He didn’t know if Alex and Philip being there made his nerves better or worse.
A while had passed between that call and the summer break. Thomas and Alex had worked a bit longer and Pip had spend a good chunk of time at the orphanage and his other Uncles and Aunties until it was time to go.
When the day came to drive down, Philip was brimming with excitement. It was a six hour drive, so they left in the morning, but that didn’t stop Philip from pointing out everything he saw that he rarely saw otherwise.
Thomas thought it was kind of adorable and listening to his kid’s rambling calmed him as did Alex’s even breaths from where he was napping in the passenger seat.
About an hour and a half into the drive Alex woke up with a small yawn: “H’w lon’ was I out?”
“Not that long,” Thomas assured him, while Pip said: “It was soooo long Papa, you missed so much by being boring. We drove past horses a while ago.”
“Ah, maybe we’ll see more horses later and I can see them too,” Alex smiled, “Want a snack?”
“You have snacks?” both asked in a different tone, Thomas curious and Pip excited.
“Of course I have snacks,” Alex got boxes with sliced apples out the bag by his feet as well as juice boxes and a water bottle. He handed Philip a few slices, twisted the cap off the water and handed that to Thomas, before giving Philip a juice box once his hands were empty.
They switched two hours into the drive, then again two hours after that, so that Thomas was the one driving the last part. As they drove they played word games with Pip and sang music.
It felt a bit like a road trip movie and Thomas cheeks hurt a bit from the smiling by the time they pulled into the driveway.
Alex gaped at the building and said: “I knew your family was loaded, but holy fuck.”
Thomas snorted, he was kind of used to that with the mansion they lived in. It was built in colonial style and old, he didn’t even know how it had gotten into the family, but it had. The sides were covered in small white flowers and on the porch an older lady sat in a rocking chair, waiting for them.
“Da does your Ma live in a castle with a dragon?” Philip asked as Thomas unbuckled him, while Alex grabbed their bags.
“No dragon, I’m afraid,” Thomas chuckled. Then turned to his Ma, who was coming to meet them, he pulled her into a hug: “Hi Ma.”
“Tommy,” his Ma replied, holding him tight, before letting him go and saying, “Aren’t you going to help your boyfriend unpack. I didn’t raise you like that.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Thomas rolled his eyes, taking a few bags from the back, smiling comforting at Alex. He knew that if he had unpacked first, she would have scolded him for letting her stand there. His Ma showed affection through toughness, it had taken a long while for him to see that.
Philip stared at this new lady with interest. She was older and darker than his Da, but she had the same eyes and grace to her. When she saw Philip staring she smiled: “And who is this young gentleman here?”
“I’m Philip, Philip Hamilton, it’s nice to meet you, Ma’am,” he stuck out his hand.
“How polite,” the lady smiled, “I’m Jane Jefferson, but you can just call me Mawmaw.”
“Mawmaw Jane,” Philip nodded to himself, “It’s nice to meet you. Do you own the house? Da says it doesn’t have a dragon, but it looks like it has a dragon.”
She chuckled: “No dragon, no. The most fierce beast you’ll find in there is Sir Poof, the cat.”
Philip pouted while Thomas grinned: “I take it none of my sisters are home, then.”
“Don’t get cocky, young man. Mary’s coming later. Now, I think there is someone you have to introduce me to, hm?” she replied.
Alex had been keeping himself on the background. No matter what he had said to Thomas, he was pretty nervous and wanted Thomas’s mother to like him, to like Pip. So he startled slightly when Thomas said: “Yes, Ma, this is Alex. Alex, this is my mother.”
“Hi, Ma’am,” he greeted, voice a bit higher than normal, “I’m Alexander, Alexander Hamilton, it’s an honor to meet you.”
“Jane Jefferson, same to you,” she smiled, she could see that the man was nervous meeting her, but she noted with amusement how both father and son had introduced themselves the same. It was clear who had taught the boy that.
“We got you these, Mrs. Jefferson,” Alex handed her the bonbons they had gotten her. Alex had wanted to buy flowers, but those would have gotten ruined during the ride, so instead they had gotten bonbons.
“How sweet, but none of that Mrs. Jefferson stuff. Call me Ma or Jane, alright?” she told him, taking the bonbons, “These are nice, thank you.”
“It- I- Thank you for your hospitality, Jane” Alex rubbed the back of his head.
Thomas watched quite amazed at this Alex. He had never seen this version of his boyfriend before. This Alex was awkward and unsure of what to do next, while also painfully polite. He decided to step in and save him: “We really appreciate the invitation, Ma.”
“Of course, of course it’s good to see you again, here I’ll show you where Philip can sleep, you two will share your old room,” Jane picked up on Thomas’s action.
They gathered their stuff and brought it to their rooms. Thomas’s old room was at the end of the right hall and Philip was staying in the guest room opposite of it, which Alex was grateful for as they set down their bags.
“You okay?” Thomas checked.
“Yeah, just more nervous than expected,” Alex admitted, “What if she doesn’t like me?”
“She will, I promise. You’re great and Pip is a sweetheart, she’s been excited about you two ever since she heard about you,” Thomas assured him.
“You think so?” Alex asked.
“I know so,” Thomas replied, hoping he wouldn’t have to come back on that, “Come, I’m sure you’d like something to drink.”
“Lord help me through this,” Alex sighed taking Thomas’s hand and allowing the soft squeeze Thomas gave to calm him.
“It’s gonna be fine.”
“Sorry, I know, I know, just scared it will go wrong, but I’ll be fine, really,” Alex said, unsure of who he was trying to convince, “Let’s just go drink something.”
Thomas held his hand all the way to the front porch, where Jane was sitting with Philip, cat on her lap. Alex could see from the way he sat that Philip was telling one of his many fantasy tales, while also trying to drink from a huge glass of lemonade with a straw in it.
Alex nodded a greeting to Jane when she noticed him, then ruffled Philip’s hair: “Hey, buddy, have you been nice?”
“Yes, Papa, I’ve been telling Mawmaw Jane about the Ranger Apprenticethat me and Da have been reading and aboutGeorge the Glitter Glue Man,” Philip told him with a grin.
“How nice Pip, have you thanked your Mawmaw for the lemonade?” he asked.
“I have,” Philip assured him.
Jane confirmed: “He has, you’ve raised such a polite young man.”
“Thank you, it helps that he’s a sweet kid,” Alex smiled, talking about Pip was easy, he could do that in his sleep.
“He sure is, ain’t you, Philly,” she smiled to the boy, “Really, I’m afraid what Francie and Kitty’ll do to him.”
“Francie and Kitty?” Philip asked.
“My nieces, my second oldest sister’s twins,” Thomas explained, “She’s the only one of my siblings who had kids and they have been spoiled into oblivion by all their Aunts and Uncles.”
“They’re lovely ladies, don’t let Tommy get into your head,” Jane assured him, “They just have active imaginations.”
Alex didn’t want to blame two little girls for how Philip would act, but he also didn’t want to paint Philip to be a bad kid, so he just said: “Well, Pip has a very active imagination himself, so they’ll probably get along.”
“Am I going to meet them?” Philip asked.
“Probably, Mary said she’d come,” Jane assured him, “Now while my son gives our guest something to drink,” it was a bit pointed, “why don’t you tell me more about this Glitter Glue Man. What was his name again?”
“George,” Philip supplied helpfully, before retelling his heroic death by glitter bullet and his subsequent confetti revival by Theo.
Thomas took Alex to the kitchen and poured him a glass of lemonade as well with a small: “Homemade, Ma’s famous for it.”
Alex took an appreciative sip and said: “It’s delicious.”
“Ma’s lemonade is the best,” Thomas told him proudly.
“I get why,” Alex smiled, relaxing somewhat.
They returned to the porch and sat with them, Alex softly complimenting the lemonade, before listening to Philip talk. Alex felt slightly bad about clinging to Philip’s charms, but he cut himself a bit of slack.
When Philip had finished his story, he took a pause to drink some more and Thomas took that opportunity to ask: “Who’s coming?”
“Well, Mary and her girls are coming, her husband couldn't make it,” Jane said, then she went down the list, “Small Jane said maybe, but she had business,Martha, Peter probably not, Abby said no, Lucy maybe, Anna most likely, Randolph yes.”
“So only Randy and Mary are coming?” Thomas summarized.
“Yeah.”
“Wait, is there another Jane? Why is she called Small Jane?” Philip spoke up.
“It’s a family name, we call her Small Jane to keep track of which Jane we’re talking about,” Jane explained.
“That’s funny,” Philip said.
Alex was about to say something about the commentwhen Jane chuckled: “Ain’t it, Philly. Don’t you know someone who’s been named after someone else. Family does that from time to time, so that they can point and say; ‘hey that’s your namesake, ain’t that cool?’”
Philip thought for a second, then said: “Auntie Angie says Theo’s mom is also called Theo, but when I asked Theo, she says her name’s just mom. It’s confusing, but she can push really well on the swings.”
That made Jane laugh and she ruffled his hair and said: “We have a swing in the tree there.”
She pointed at a big tree and Philip’s eyes lit up and he looked back to Alex with big eyes. Alex smiled and said: “You can go swing if you want, just be careful. Want me to walk with you there?”
“I’m big, I can do that on my own,” Philip protested, but as he got off the bench, he did say, “Thank you, Papa.”
“Stay in sight?” Alex asked.
“I will,” Philip promised.
The three adults watched Philip bound over to the swings, then Jane turned her focus to Alex: “So, has my Tommy been treating you right?”
“Ma!” Thomas exclaimed, he had told her not to be embarrassing, not that he had expected her to listen, but still.
“Uh,” she shushed him with a finger, “I asked Alex a question, Tommy. I wanna know if you’re treating him right. So, Alex.”
Alex had expected a lot of questions, but not that one, so he floundered for a moment, before he found his words: “Yeah, yeah, it’s- it’s been good, he’s been good.”
“Yeah?” Jane nodded along with sharp eyes.
“Yeah,” Alex confirmed, “He’s a huge help with Pip and a great cook, actually. He also gets me flowers,” he couldn't have helped the smile on his face if he tried, “And I feel like we have great conversations.”
“Ahw, you love me,” Thomas grinned draping himself over Alex, it might have been an embarrassing question, but having Alex list off his good qualities in front of his Ma was an ego boost if he ever saw one.
“Like you didn’t know that, dork,” Alex attempted to push him off, but the push was light enough for Thomas to know that he didn’t mean it.
During the exchange Jane got an approving and pleased look on her face, before she moved on to the big hitters: “And what are your intentions with my son?”
Thomas gave her big ‘what are you doing?’- eyes.
However, Alex had gotten over his initial awkwardness and his usual way of words came back: “If I am honest, I would say grow old at some point. Though currently I am just enjoying spending time with him, figuring out what makes him smile, where I can step in like he does for me. Mostly, I just want to have the time to give him all flowers he deserves.”
It was quiet for a moment as Jane sized him up, then she grinned: “I can see why Tommy likes you, he’s also the wordy one around here.”
Alex chuckled, feeling a bit more at ease with that response: “The amount of wordy we both are has made our boss very tired on numerous occasions.”
“You can’t admit you’re wrong, that’s different, darlin’,” Thomas felt the need to point out.
Did Alex know he was sitting in front of his maybe one day mother-in-law? Yes. Could he let Thomas win this argument even though responding would prove his point? No.
“I know when to admit defeat, you just don’t have sound arguments. There’s a difference, okay?” he shot back, “And no, I will not side with you on the chicken-egg debate, picking chicken is stupid and you’re just saying it because I think it’s egg.”
“It’s chicken, cause it lays the egg, Alex, it’s just nature.”
“Other animals lay eggs. Fish lay eggs and fish were the first living beings almost ever,” Alex told him, unable to let it go, “Dinosaurs laid eggs too, they were before chickens.”
“But we’re talking about chicken eggs, only chickens can lay those, therefore there has to be a chicken to lay it.”
“One, saying therefore doesn’t make your argument better. Two, you never clarified we were talking about chicken eggs, therefore you can not suddenly introduce that as a rule for the discussion and your argument falls away.”
“What was that about therefore?” Thomas grinned.
“Okay, gentlemen, chicken, eggs, interesting,” Jane cut them both off, she’d had to sit to too many Christmases when Martha was still around for her to know that Thomas wasn’t going to stop.
“Sorry, Ma’a- Ma,” Alex corrected himself last minute.
“Which side are you on?” Thomas had never not involved everyone to get on his side and he wasn’t letting his Ma off the hook.
“Alex’s, your argument is stupid,” she deadpanned, noting Alex’s shit eating grin to Thomas as she did, “What I’m more interested in is how you’ve been. The last time I saw you was last year during the summer and I appreciate the calls, but face to face, talk to me. How have you been? Your job okay? DoI need to have words with Washington?”
“No, Ma, Washington is still a good boss,” Thomas assured her, “And I’ve been doing great, I picked up reading poetry again and I have just been enjoying the small things, they make life great, you know?”
Jane smiled at the last part: “Good to see you finally having a bit of joy in your life. You always had that weight on your shoulders, it’s nice to see it gone for a change.”
“It’s nice to have it gone, Ma,” Thomas agreed, while Alex contended himself with listening, “But how have you been Ma? Not lonely out here?”
“Nah, Mary and the kids visit often, they at least do,” she said, “It’s good to have some life in this house, you know. Keeps me young. And I’ve been going to the market. Joe from the farm down by the church says hi along with Father Adam.”
“And the knitting club?” he asked.
“You know how that is. Though last time Janet brought store bought cookies, so we don’t know if anything’s going on there, but we’re keeping our eyes on her.”
“Nothing too bad, I hope.”
Jane leaned in conspiratorially and said: “Nah, Dixie saw her in the park with a handsome looking man. We think she’s having an affair.”
“Oh no, really? Janet?” Thomas gasped and Jane nodded in return: “Uh-huh, let me tell you,” then she caught up the both of them on the local gossip with names Thomas nodded at and Alex had never heard before. After that they moved on to just daily life stuff.
At some point Philip came back from the swings, confidently stating: “I think there are fairies living in the tree, the leaves speak.”
“Really, buddy?” Alex asked, hoping Jane wouldn’t judge him for indulging his son’s imagination, since he said other – weirder –stuff like this.
“Yeah, just like in that book Auntie Eliza always reads to me,” Philip explained.
“Well, I never noticed them, but maybe you can tell me more about them while we cook,” Jane told him, getting up, “We’re making fried chicken and I hear from your Papa that you’ve been helping him out in the kitchen. Would you like to learn a bit more?”
“I would love that!” Philip exclaimed, clapping his hands, before taking Jane’s and following her into the house.
Thomas turned to Alex with a big grin and sparkling eyes. Alex looked confused and asked: “What? What does that look mean?”
“She likes Pip,” he explained, “Her asking help with cooking is the number one compliment or acknowledgment you can get from her. We’re killing this.”
“Really?” relief flooded through his system.
“Yeah, welcome to the family, darling.”

A/N:
I made up the nieces, bc I’m not researching family trees for a fic that has gotten too far out of hand already, okay, not doing it.
As for the others I didn’t try and figure out any of the family’s personalities or actual lives, if you’re looking for accuracy a fanfic is not the place to find it. Same forin the next chapter, have no expectations on that front.
Also, yes, I am passionate about the chicken-egg discussion and I am pro egg, you can fight me.

Y/N absent-mindedly stirred a cup of coffee, staring into space as her co-workers observed her from afar. “Is- is she okay?” Sam whispered to Noelle who turned to glare at him incredulously, “You’re not serious, are you? She looks like her pet hamster was just taken for ransom and killed right after she handed over the money- what do you mean is she okay, of course not!” Sam raised their hands in defence, “Alright chill, I was just asking because if were to ask her I would straight up die. You girls are fucking scary.” You could almost hear the snaps of necks as all the female staff turned to glare at them. Noelle jabbed her finger into their chest, leaning close to their face. “Now you listen to me, Sammy, you haven’t seen scary and you best hope you never do. Now stop gawking and do your work!” She stepped back and went to pick up an order from the counter. Sam gulped and looked away, “That was kinda hot. Scary, but crazy attractive…” Casey raises an eyebrow and steps away from her observing point, “Okay, we get it, you’re a simp, get back to work before she actually gets mad.” Sam nodded frantically, saluting her before running to take orders.
Casey sighed, “I’m like a single mother but without the commitment of having real kids.” She turned to look back at Y/N, “And now time to sort this mess out.” Casey made her way over to the counter and started messing around with the ketchup and mustard bottles, “So, Doll, you gonna stay here feeling sorry for yourself or tell me what’s going on with you?”
---
Y/N sat in the break room, after hours once again due to Caleb. “Okay, Y/N, we’re gonna fix this, we’ll sort it out just fine! The only problem is the whole possession thing, I have no clue how that stuff works. If I can find a way around that then we should be fine…would an exorcism work?” Y/N tenses when she hears chuckling from behind her, “I hope you aren’t planning on getting rid of me, Diner Gal.” She released a breath she didn’t know she was holding, all the tension flooding out of her body, “Hey, Leather Boy. No, I’ve got other ghostly problems other than just you.” Reggie frowned, he may be an airhead sometimes but he liked to believe he was at least a bit perceptive of other’s emotions so he decided to try and cheer her up anyway he could.
Reggie gasped, raising a hand to his heart feigning offence, “Are you cheating on me? I thought I was your only ghost problem.” He started panicking when he saw her shoulders start shaking, was Y/N crying? How do you comfort a crying girl and not make her even more upset? “Are you okay? I’m sorry!” Y/N quickly turned to look at him, “Sorry? For what? Oh” “Okay, so not that perceptive with emotions…” He muttered to himself, Y/N furrowed her eyebrows but shrugged it off
“Anyway, what are your ghostly troubles? Perhaps I could help since I do happen to be of the ghostly variety.” Y/N hesitated before blurting out her troubles, “OkaysotheresthisweirdghostmancalledCalebandhespossessingCalandIdontknowwhattodosoifyouhaveanyideasonhowtohelppleasetellme-“
“Okay, I know I’m a fast talker but I don’t speed Sonic the Hedgehog so slow down and I’ll help out as best as I can, alright?” Y/N nodded, suddenly taking great interest in the skin around her fingernails, “So, um, there’s this ghost dude who is possessing Cal, he said his name was Caleb and that I either have to make a deal with him or I’ll lose Cal forever.” But if I do that I’ll lose you too-
“Wow, that is rough. Um, okay, I’ll get Alex to ask his boyfriend if there’s anything we can do to help Cal. Just, don’t worry about it too much, we’ll get through this.” Y/N sniffed, feeling her eyes start to water, “We? You’ll really help me?” Reggie’s gaze softened and he took both of her hands in his, rubbing his thumb over her knuckles, “Of course I will, I’d never make you deal with this by yourself, and hey, now we know why Cal was loading you up with extra work!” Y/N chuckled, turning her gaze toward their intertwined hands, “Thanks, Reg. That means a lot.” She smiled up at him as Reggie’s face and tips of his ears turned red, “You okay? You’re uh-“ She took one of her hands away from his grip and gestured towards her face. Reggie looked away, his blush worsening, “Point is, I’m here for you, so don’t worry! I’m gonna go ask Alex’s boyfriend for help but I’ll see you later.”
Y/N nodded as she moved away, giving him space to poof, “Right, see ya later.” Reggie held her gaze for a few more seconds before waving and poofing out.
“Well, I thought he’d never leave!”
Y/N spun around to face the purple-clad puppeteer she’d come to know as Caleb, “You. What do you want now?” She was met with a sinister laugh, one that she was quickly growing tired of. “My dear, I’m simply here to drop off something that will, when signed, make our deal permanent and binding.” Y/N rolled her eyes, “And exactly why would I sign that?” She shivered as the slightly tense atmosphere turned frigid, if the feeling before could be described as a muddy red, agitated but otherwise harmless, this feeling was a piercing blue, capable of cutting through a person and freezing them in place. “Listen here, girlie. If you ever want to see your precious Cal again you’ll have this signed before the end of the boys little performance on Friday. Is that clear?” Y/N swallowed before meeting his penetrating stare, “Crystal.”
“Perfect, I’m glad there are no misunderstanding between us, I wouldn’t want to accidentally lose Cal’s soul whilst I’m possessing him.” Y/N stared him down, hoping her glower had at least some effect on him. “You wouldn’t dare-“ “Darling, in case you hadn’t noticed, you hold no power over me and saying something as pointless as that won’t change anything. Now, here’s my contract. Do think over it, won’t you?” He placed it on the nearest surface before disappearing in a poof of black smoke. “Fucking dramatic ass bitch.”
Y/N ran a hand over her face, groaning at the thought of more problems being added onto her already comically long list. “I hope Leather Boy’s friend has some answers or I’m fucking done for…”

(July 2007)
"You ready?" Alex asked as he looked at Jo in the passenger seat and Lexie in the back. They were sitting in the hospital parking lot, Jo and Lexie taking in the fact that today was the first day of their intern year. "You don't want to be late on your first day. Trust me, you want to hear Webber's speech. And I don't want to be late to meet my interns."
"Do you guys already know who you have?" Lexie asked. She wasn't originally supposed to come to Seattle. She had a top tier surgical residency waiting for her at Mass Gen, but when her mom died about a month ago, she got rematched at Seattle Grace to be closer to her father. On top of that, Lexie had just found out that she had an older sister who was working in this very hospital.
"No, we find out when you do," Alex shared. "Are you sure you don't want me to talk to Meredith? She's a good person. A bit emotionally stunted, but she's a good friend."
"No, Alex it's fine," Lexie shook her head. "I think she should hear it from me."
"Okay. I'm going to go inside. I'll see you guys later. Maybe if you're lucky you'll be on my service," he leaned over to the passenger seat and gave Jo a peck on the lips before getting out of the car. "Don't forget to lock the door."
About an hour later, Jo and Lexie were in the locker room, waiting for Webber to share which resident they would be working under. He went through the list of residents and called out interns.
“Alright everyone listen up. I am going to assign you to a resident. When I call your name, you will go find your resident in the hallway and await instructions. Trimble, Franklin, Morales, and Bozniack you’re with Stevens. Harrison, Allen, O’Malley, Johnson, and Phillips with Grey. Lawrence, Crowley, Vega, Brown, and Grey you’re with Yang. Last but not least, Hernandez, Jenkins, Davis, and Wilson, you’re with Karev.”
Jo and Lexie exchanged a glance. Jo knew that being on Alex’s service was always a possibility, however, she never thought it would actually happen. That would make things much more difficult than she’d anticipated. Prior to starting, Jo and Alex had agreed to keep their relationship private. Aside from Lexie, no one would know that the two of them were together, so that if Jo got to scrub in on a surgery or was handed a case, it was because she was good and not because she was dating a resident. But what was once a possibility, quickly became a reality, and they were going to have to learn how to deal with this situation if they wanted to keep their relationship private.
Soon after Webber assigned the interns to their residents, they all left the room, leaving only Jo and the other three residents there.
Jo was organizing her locker when she heard the others gossiping about Alex.
“Ughh, what was I even expecting from this? I have the worst luck ever. Of course I was going to end up with the douchiest resident. You guys heard about him, right?” Jenkins complained, Jo’s eyes glued to the objects in front of her.
“Yeah. His reputation around this place is not the best. I heard he is really good, though. Not everything is lost yet. Let’s wait and see,” Hernandez tried to be positive.
“I heard that too. Looks like he is really talented and hardworking, but I heard that if you’re not one of them, he will treat you like trash no matter what. One of the residents in his class, that is,” Davis added, making Jo’s heart sink a little.
If only they knew a bit more about him, they wouldn’t be so quick to judge. She knew that her boyfriend wasn’t the easiest person to deal with and he still had a lot of growing and learning to do, but he had the biggest heart. Hearing the other residents talk about him made Jo sigh.
“What about you, Wilson? Things aren’t looking good for him already. Dude is already late. First thing he does is make us wait for him. Ever heard anything about the guy?” Jenkins asked Jo, forcing her to pull her head out of the locker and interact with them.
“Not really, to be honest. Maybe he’s not that bad. I’m not the biggest fan of judging people before actually knowing them. Maybe the three of you can give it a shot? Soothes the soul a bit,” Jo gave them a sarcastic smile after closing the locker aggressively. She knew she shouldn’t be doing that. Getting into arguments with the people she was going to spend the next five years of her life glued to. Especially not that early into the thing, but she wasn’t about to let them say bad things about her boyfriend without giving him a chance. And she wasn’t wrong. They really shouldn’t judge him before knowing nothing but his name.
“You find him hot, don’t you?” Hernandez smiled at her. "You saw him earlier when Webber was giving us the tour and you thought he was hot."
Jo didn’t want to blatantly lie to them, so she was more than thankful for the moment Alex interrupted and entered the room.
“Hernandez, Wilson, Jenkins and Davis, come,” he ushered them to get ready.
Alex guided the four interns to the hall before glancing at his girlfriend, who was supporting a poker face like he had never seen before. Still, he could see through it with ease. His face twitched into a crooked half-smile, causing Jo to roll her eyes ever so slightly.
Although he couldn’t pretend he wasn’t excited about having her closer to him, he was worried that their original plan was going to be even harder than they had thought it would be. Knowing that she was going to be so close in proximity to him after a year of being an entire country apart, was going to severely push his restraint.
“So, I’m Dr. Alex Karev and I’ll be your resident. I have five rules, and you’ll have to use your underdeveloped brains to memorize them,” he started walking after noticing Jo was trying hard not to laugh at the things he was saying, but still keeping a straight face.
“Rule number one: don’t even think about kissing my ass. It won’t work. I already hate you, and that’s not gonna change. Rule number two: run! Trauma protocol, phone list, pagers, nurses will page you. You will answer every single page at a run. Your first shift starts now. I have no idea how long it will last. It’s not my problem. You should know that. You’re interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders, work until you drop and don’t complain. I am not going to raise whiny babies,” he stopped in front of a door and eyed the four people in front of him before opening it and walking inside the room. “On call rooms. Attendings hog them to sleep or do other things. You will sleep when you can, where you can, and I don’t want to have to
find any of you doing the nasty anywhere, understand? Rule number three: if I’m sleeping, do not wake me, unless the patient is dying. Four: the dying patient better not be dead when I get there.”
Jo’s eyes shined teasingly as she raised her hand, “You said five rules. That was only four.”
Alex tried not to smirk as his pager went off, “Rule number five: when I move, you move. Let’s go.”

Jo’s first shift ended after thirty-six hours. She was completely and utterly exhausted, every muscle in her body protesting as she walked the two blocks from the hospital to her apartment. When she finally made it in the house, Alex was waiting for her with a beer and pizza in hand. He guided her to the couch and helped her sit down.
Jo groaned as her body sank down into the cushions, “I feel like I want to just curl up into a ball on this couch and sleep forever.”
“Yeah, that sounds about right,” Alex chuckled. “I know you’re exhausted, but I need you to eat before you pass out, so take the pizza and beer.”
“I thought you said you hate your interns and that’s not gonna change,” Jo raised her eyebrows. “You’re being awfully nice to me, Dr. Karev. I hope you don’t think that this means I’ll sleep with you. Because even if I wanted to, I think I’m too tired to do anything.”
“Shut up,” Alex rolled his eyes. He looked at her suggestively. “And, you know I don’t mind doing all the work. It might be good for you, ya know? Like a stress reliever. All it will cost you is making sure you get some food in your system.”
“Are you offering to service me?” Jo laughed. This was reason one hundred fifty-seven of why she loved this man. “Is this something you do for all your interns, Dr. Karev?”
“Only the ones I’m in love with,” Alex leaned across the couch for a kiss. “Trust me when I say, I am very eager to please you.”
“You’re so dirty!” Jo giggled and pushed his shoulder lightly. “But, I may have to take you up on that offer.”
The pair talked and laughed while they shared their meal. It was nice being able to spend time together again and finally be on the same page. Agreeing to finish their food, they sat there in silence for a while before Jo spoke up again, “Are you sure this isn’t a conflict of interest? Me being your intern?”
“It might be,” Alex sighed. “I have a hard time telling you no, or when to stop because I respect you and I love you. But I also know that going easy on you would only be a disservice to your career, so I’m going to do my best to let you know when you’re in need of improvement.”
“Thank you,” Jo brought her hand up to his face. “I’m really happy that I’m here.”
“So am I,” Alex grinned. “So, what do you say we go to the room and I’ll… help you relax.”
“Three and a half years in and you still have a one track mind,” Jo shook her head, an amused look on her face.
“What can I say?” Alex shrugged. “I have a super hot girlfriend and can’t get enough of her.”
