Alex Kidd - High-Tech World | SMS LongPlay [003]
Alex Kidd: High-Tech World is a platform game for Master System. The player embodies little Alex Kidd who must find eight card fragments to go and play in a brand new arcade. The game is broken down into action phases, fights in the forest against snarling ninjas, and adventure sequences where Alex has to talk to the locals to find the fragments and solve various puzzles.

Sukeban Deka II (Japanese Video Game Obscurity)
This article is part of our Japanese Obscurities feature. We put out a whole book about them, which is available as both a full color hardcover and a Kindle ebook from Amazon! If you’d like to see more of these features, please check out the book and if you enjoyed it, leave a five star review so we can do a follow up with even more interesting, offbeat, or historically important Japanese games!
During the Sega Mark III’s life, there were a few licensed tie-ins that melded adventure and action genres. Two of these, Kujaku-Ou and Anmitsu Hime, made their way overseas, stripped off their license, and released as Spellcaster and Alex Kidd: High Tech World, respectively. One game that wasn’t so lucky was Sukeban Deka II.

Atgames Portable Console on Sale
Quick Heads up for anyone living in the UK, Argos the catalogue shop are selling the Atgames portable Master System / Game Gear for £19.99. It’s one of the few Atgames Sega products worth picking up and at that price I think it’s a steal.
We fans of Sega’s 8-bit consoles tend to get left out when it comes to the clone and reproduction markets (Brazil’s unique situation notwithstanding) and this is really the only clone of any kind we've seen to date in Europe. Thankfully, it’s also pretty good. It has a decent D-pad, responsive buttons and a reasonable screen, which could be better, but it’s certainly clear enough to show up those tiny SMS shoot ‘em up sprites (anyone who ever tried to play a Master System shoot ‘em up on a fuzzy Game Gear screen using the converter will know it as the definition of futility).
There are some criticisms to be made, of course. Sadly, it doesn’t look much like a miniature Game Gear, feels a little cheap in construction overall and the game selection is a little spotty. That said, Atgames can only licence what Sega will let them and the hand-held still contains some solid gold classics, like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Fantasy Zone 1 & 2, Super Columns, Baku Baku Animal and Ristar as well as some underrated gems like Astro Warrior and The Ninja. Still, I could think of at least half a dozen games that should be on this thing in place of garbage like Alex Kidd High-Tech World and Global Defense.
Weirdly, the unit contains the SMS version of Columns, which makes little sense when the Game Gear version would be better suited to the small dimensions of a portable, though it will look much better if you plan to play this thing through a television, so we’ll give Atgames a pass for maybe considering this. Weirder still, the included version of Golden Axe is turbocharged and much faster than the original (though the slow down and choppy animation of the original running on genuine hardware won’t be missed by many, so perhaps this is arguably an improvement). But oddities like this aside, the emulation is generally faithful.
All in all, I think it’s worth the price.

Bad Video Game Mascots? How about Alex Kidd (Let's see how many people remember him)
Tumblr media
You know, when I was a kid, I thought this guy was supposed to be a monkey.
With that said, Alex Kidd isn’t what I’d call a bad video game mascot, as much as a rather meh one.
His games are pretty okay for the most part, despite some slipperiness to the controls
I haven’t played all of his games, but the ones I played vary from bad to meh to somewhat fun.
Sadly my favorite Alex Kidd game is Alex Kidd in High Tech World... which actually wasn’t really an Alex Kidd game, it was a reskin of an anime based game... go fig.
