Liv, are there any modern novels you'd recommend that really capture the Regency mindset? Most of the ones I've come across feel like modern characters dressed in period fashion. I'd especially appreciate books that focus on working class characters, or on how the Napoleonic wars affected civilians back in England. Thanks so much! (also I'm in perpetual awe of all your historical knowledge and charms, you're wonderful)
So, I really like Longbourn by Jo Baker. It’s Pride and Prejudice but told from the servants perspective (the Bennet family’s servants, Bingley’s servants, and I think, at some point, Darcy’s servants too). They have their own romances and issues whilst the plot of Pride and Prejudice happens in the background. I loved it, it was really fun!
Tides of War by Stella Tillyard was good too. The main character’s husband goes away to fight under the Duke of Wellington in the Napoleonic wars, and whilst she’s left alone, she’s seduced by another man. It might sound like a bit of a Mills and Boon historical erotica but it’s actually really detailed and explores themes of female sexuality, science and progress, masculinity, and politics & war in this period. The main heroine isn’t even the only character, Tillyard has a whole cast of characters around Europe that she weaves together to tell the story of this period, some of whom are based on real people, others which are fictional. For example, there’s a subplot involving a young soldier called Thomas who ends up doing something terrible with his fellow men whilst they’re in Spain and has to deal with the severity and cruelty of his crime when he comes back to England. It’s a heavy, thoughtful novel about the cost of war, and the ups and downs of existence. Tillyard is an historian, an expert in18th and early 19th century, so she is a reliable writer.
Lastly, I have to recommend some of Ruth Axtell’s Regency era historical fictions, mainly because she gets the racial diversity of London down to a T. My favourite novel of hers is The Winter is Past, about a young MP called Simon Aguilar, who is a Sephardic Jew (sidenote: if I remember correctly, he has to outwardly hide this in order to pursue his career), and his romance with a nurse named Alethea Breton, who is not only a Methodist Christian but also the illegitimate daughter of an aristocrat. It’s great, Axtell is a hidden gem of a historical fiction writer. She manages to master the heights and sparkle of the Regency elite, right down to the minutiae of lower class life, and everything in between.
I hope those are some helpful suggestions! Thank you for your kind words! 💕

It’s a gift: Some families are boycotting presents this year
Throughout the nation, households are listening to the same chorus: Fewer objects, please. Extra experiences.
Becki Svare has made a radical determination: She received’t purchase anymore Christmas presents.
It began just a few years in the past as an experiment along with her prolonged household. The vacation season started because it typically did, with a dozen kin drawing names out of a hat. However as an alternative of shopping for items for one another, they needed to provide you with a significant expertise to share with their designated particular person. Instructed value: $20 to $25.
Svare’s kids took their aunts kayaking. Her brother took his 9-year-old nephew for a journey on his Harley-Davidson, after which out for sushi and a visit to the native reptile heart. Others went to the zoo.
“You needed to be considerably inventive with it,” stated Svare, a blogger who lives in DeLand, Florida, close to Orlando. “However all of us agreed that it was higher than shopping for issues folks don’t want.”

Throughout the nation, households are listening to the same chorus: Fewer objects, please. Extra experiences.
It’s a motion that has picked up momentum lately, as a part of a broader push away from consumerism. Retailers are taking discover. Main chains like Finest Purchase, Apple and Nordstrom incorporate cooking courses, images workshops and manicures inside their shops.
This vacation season, retail analysts say there was a discernible shift in gift-giving as Individuals suppose past conventional presents. Almost 40 % of customers deliberate to provide reward playing cards, occasion tickets or different “intangible” items, in response to market analysis agency NPD Group. Though total vacation spending is projected to rise about four % to $680 billion this yr, Individuals say they’ll spend much less on presents: a mean $608 on items for household, mates and colleagues, down from $621 final yr, in response to the Nationwide Retail Federation.
“We dwell in a world of abundance, the place most of us simply have too many issues,” stated Jeffrey Galak, a professor who research shopper habits at Carnegie Mellon College. “Individuals are beginning to understand that objects actually aren’t that essential anymore.”
Boon for tickets
Lecturers notice there was no scarcity of analysis lately to again up the concept folks derive extra pleasure from experiences than items. The pattern has been good for the likes of StubHub. The web purveyor of sports activities, live performance and theater tickets says gross sales of reward playing cards are up 50 % over final yr.
However vowing to chop again on presents is one factor; doing so could be a yearslong course of. It may be powerful to get kin on board, and even probably the most devoted of gift-boycotters can really feel a tinge of panic when, just a few days earlier than Christmas, there isn’t a lot underneath the tree.
“Social norms could be a troublesome factor to beat,” stated Ross Steinman, a professor of shopper psychology at Widener College in Chester, Pennsylvania. “If there’s an understanding in your loved ones that there must be a tower of items underneath your Christmas tree yearly, it’s actually exhausting to alter that.”
Certainly, it took practically twenty years, however Alethea Smartt says her household has (largely) stopped shopping for Christmas items.
The hassle began in 1999, she says, when she moved to New York to take a job as a flight attendant. She had a tiny residence and traveled typically, which meant she didn’t have room for additional objects.
However persuading her household in Tennessee, the place she grew up receiving a whopping two dozen items every Christmas, was a unique story. She began slowly — or so she thought — suggesting a restrict of 1 reward per particular person.
“I knew we couldn’t go chilly turkey, however it was nonetheless a complete catastrophe,” says Smartt, 43, a journey author in Portland. “There have been loads of damage emotions and tears. Regardless that we didn’t have cash, it was actually essential to my mother and father to have the ability to purchase us materials issues.”
Her mom, particularly, was crestfallen, she says. However these days, she says, they’ve discovered a groove — and her mom, Diane Campbell, agrees.
Just a few years in the past, Campbell stunned the household with new baggage — and a cruise to Alaska. Final yr, she took her grandsons on a four-day journey to Chicago. She makes picture books for her daughters, and bakes cookies for her son-in-law.
“At first, it nearly felt embarrassing,” stated Campbell, 67, who works for a tour firm in Nashville. “I’d all the time been so proud that I used to be capable of give everybody a lot in the course of the holidays.”
Nevertheless it’s getting simpler, she stated, though she does generally stash a few last-minute McDonald’s reward playing cards underneath the tree for her grandsons.
Smartt has no complaints. “It’s gotten higher yearly. We’ve gone from what I’d name extreme materialism to a couple considerate items.”
A contented medium
After years of experimenting — dozens of items one Christmas, none one other — Christi Chartrand, a house health-care employee in Brantford, Ontario, says she’s lastly discovered a cheerful medium for her brood of eight, which incorporates three organic kids, 4 adopted kids and one foster baby.
On Christmas morning, every baby receives precisely three presents price a complete of $100. On birthdays, they get to decide on between a celebration or a $150 outing with mother or dad.
“Nearly each single time, the youngsters ask for a date night time,” she says, including that they’ve gone procuring in Buffalo, visited CN Tower in Toronto, and brought a half-hour airplane journey close to Niagara Falls. “They don’t even suppose twice about it anymore.”
In 2010, it was a unique story. For years, she and her husband maxed out their bank cards to purchase mountains of toys.
“We needed to unbury the tree on Christmas morning as a result of there have been simply so many items piled up round it,” she stated. “And we discovered that our children have been simply so ungrateful. It by no means appeared to be sufficient. They might open their presents after which say, ‘Now what?’”
The turning level got here, she says, when her son unwrapped a gift from an aunt. “He checked out her and stated, ‘A e-book? That’s it?’” she recalled. “I used to be so mortified and stated, ‘This has to alter.’”
The subsequent yr, she and her husband took the household on a street journey to Florida and didn’t purchase a single current. The youngsters have been irked at first, however rapidly received over it. The yr after that, they settled on the three-gift compromise.
“We’re not making an attempt to be radical,” she says. “We simply need them to understand that it’s not a life requirement to open 1,000 presents on Christmas morning.”
