Battle Mages

Doesn't it seem, at least in the series, that warlocks are kinda easy pickings for the circle? I mean, they have magic.

They should be able to put up more of a fight. Should be way harder to kill or kidnap.

Unless offensive magic, magic meant to use in a fight, is something that needs to be learned and mastered. (just like humans - and shadowhunters - need to learn how to fight and train that ability.)

Maybe magic that is meant for fighting is hard to learn and master. Or it's something many warlocks don't wish to learn as the aggressiveness that is part of fighting is too close to their demonic origins (something I think almost every warlock detests.) (Or, you know, just like not every human learns to fight, because they simply don't want to)

So Magnus being able to use battle magic, and being damn good at it, is actually one of the reasons he is High Warlock?

And also the reason why the New York Institute tries their best to have a good work relationship with him?

Maybe even to the point where they encourage Alec to reciprocate interest? (in case of series re-write)

And there are obviously magics that warlocks can specialize in. Like Catarina, who is allegedly the best healer. So the same should be true for other magics as well. Including fighting magic.

And someone like Magnus who has a tremendous power base thanks to who his father is, simply has a larger pool to take from for learning. But that still requires him to learn this kind of magic.

And then there is the fact that Magnus knows how to fight the mundane way as well, as seen in his sparring match with Alec.

So this is something that Magnus willingly studied in order to be able to fight. So he also willingly studied magic that would enable him to fight. Through those little memory flashbacks we saw him in a uniform during a war, so again there is the proof of Magnus being no stranger to battle.

Magnus is a fighter. But it is something he chose to be.

Obviously for good reasons.

But it's also understandable that other warlocks would choose not to be fighters. Not to learn how to use their magic in offensive ways. So they are more easily attacked by circle members.

I saw a Reddit post that said that we really don't know Magnus' birth name and all I could think of is -why do you want to know his birth name?-

We already know so much about Magnus that makes him *him*.

We know that he was taught everything about being a warlock by ragnor fell

We know that he spent most of his teenage years with the silent brothers

We know that he saved Catarina from being burned at the stake

We know that he helped Will partly because he felt guilty for not helping his father

We know that he helped Jocelyn despite hating everything that valentine had done to downworlders

We know that he takes pride in watching Clary grow up

We know that he cares so much about Raphael

We know that he loved Camille despite everything she did

We know that he had even considered giving up his immortality to live and grow old with Alec

We know that he helped the tmi gang for free because he was fond of them and he loved Alec.

We know Thule Magnus would rather die than turn into a demon.

We know that Magnus was ready to help Simon grieve his friends once they grew old and died.

We know that Magnus was the shoulder that Tessa cried on when Will died, and he will do it again when Jem dies.

We know that Magnus was willing to do anything just for Julian and Emma to be together

We already know Magnus inside and out, knowing the name given to him by the person who makes both his fondest and his most painful memories won't change anything.

Wednesday prompt - Clary/Jase/Izzy etc try to justify something by claiming that 'you only met/got together with Magnus because of our decisions so they can't be that bad' only for Alex to fire back about the inevitability of their meeting, even without being institute/warlock leaders & politic meetings, there is no world in which he would look upon Magnus and fall. (Meanwhile, Magnus is either swooning, about to swoon when he hears, or ready to 'prove' how inevitable they are - in bed ;)

“Oh please, it’s because of Clary that you even met Magnus. You wouldn’t have had your happily ever after if it wasn’t for her! In fact it’s also because of me! Since you know, I found out because of Camille.” Simon’s voice lowers at that last bit and he looks around, as if wary the name will summon her.

Amusing, but it takes at least grave dirt for that.

Izzy winces at Simon’s usual lack of tact but even when Alec glares at her, she just shrugs in a way Alec knows means ‘well he’s not wrong’.

Worse, Jace and Clary agree. 

Out loud.

In a bar full of shadowhunters and downworlders both.

Alec is about to be known as the HOTI with the most incompetent family. Especially since his mother’s deruning is public knowledge at this point. 

Worse, at least five of the downworlders in the back crowd work for Magnus in some capacity.  Alec can recognize how the magic on him reacts to the magic they’re sworn to.  They’ll also have noticed the reaction and be keeping an eye on him for Magnus’ sake and probably an ear too.

Every one in the shadowworld knows that Magnus Lightwood-Bane loves to hear what his shadowhunter husband is up to.  Magnus has the biggest spy network that crosses both shadowhunter and downworlder lines and it’s centered around gossip of Alec and no one’s even noticed.

“Well I will admit that it’s because of Clary that I met Magnus in combat, twice on the same night. But Magnus and I were always fated to meet, it was just a matter of time.”

“Okay, but Lydia! You would have already been married before you even met Magnus.” Simon points it out quickly but Izzy and Jace both wince.  Alec is glad to see that at least they’re smart enough to see the issue of this particular logic.

“I wouldn’t have had to think about marriage for another six years by my original plans if Clary hadn’t shown up. I only even met Lydia when she was sent over because of the waves Clary was making. The very thing that caused our parents to push me for a political marriage was Clary’s existence and presence.”

Alec can do this all day.

In fact he’d be delighted to, if it helps hammer some sense into them.

“Wait, what do you mean all of that happened because of me?” Clary doesn’t sound horrified, she sounds vaguely defensive and Alec sighs.

“Well you showed up and insisted on dragging with you a mundane who had no business in a world that ended up killing him. You got over a dozen of my shadowhunters killed because you didn’t follow orders. Not to mention how many on behalf of the Clave.  I know you didn’t understand those orders, but that’s exactly why you should have listened. To at least learn what you shouldn’t do, if you were still going to disobey.

“It’s the same reason that dozens of downworlders are dead because of you.  Perhaps not your direct actions all the time, but even just your presence has caused death. The main New York pack alpha changed because of you and Simon.  It happened through Luke but it was because of you. The power structures recentered themselves, dozens of vampires died because again, you brought Simon along.  True, they shouldn’t have kidnapped him but unlike you, they didn’t have the ability to defy orders so defiantly and they were under orders.  You were not. In fact you often ignored orders, suggestions, commands and even begging at times. If you hadn’t insisted on dragging Simon with you despite repeated warnings, none of that would have happened.”

Jace is beginning to glower at him but there’s also red high on his cheeks and his ears and Alec has a feeling that the year he spent with his grandmother before Clary got her memories back was good for his self-restraint.  Shocking as it is to think that Imogen has any, let alone the ability to teach it.  Alec feels like the old politician is just too stubborn and Jace too happy to have a family. 

Izzy is looking at the table, the ceiling, her bracelet... anywhere but Simon, Clary or Alec’s own face.

Simon looks disturbed, as if he’s only just realized quite a few things and also like he might lose his dinner.  

Which Alec will not forgive.  

If Simon ruins Alec’s new shirt — that Magnus picked out for tonight — then Alec will sit Simon down and point out every single instance in which Clary either deliberately put him in danger, ignored him, or the times Simon himself created chaos and then cried foul about it.

It’s been almost a year of being back after two years gone and things are still in the fond memory stage of things regarding Clary.  Alec is happy to stir up bad memories before he will let anyone start pulling ‘Clary saved the world’ bullshit again.

By Raziel, Alec barely handled not starting a massacre the first time it popped up and he knows for a fact that it was either Izzy or Simon or Jace who started it.

Thankfully, while she’s quick to believe any accolades and praise of herself, Clary is less quick to claim such a great feat after all she’s lost.

That doesn’t mean Alec won’t keep an eye on her though.

“My point is—” Alec says, because he actually does have one. “Is that while Clary certainly caused enough disaster for me to meet Magnus several times over, her actions could have just as likely kept us apart. It certainly didn’t help us get together. What was always going to bring Magnus and I together is the Institute’s wards. Even discounting my eventual full promotion to Head, I was already a Commander. The wards were due for a touch-up even before the experimental forsaken invaded, it just got delayed because of all the waves Valentine and Clary were both making. And Magnus has been the holder of the Institute wards for decades, our meeting was set into fate since before you were born.”

Clary is frowning at him, but her face has been like that since he finished pointing out all the shit she pulled.

Simon looks like he wants either the booth to swallow him whole, or to sink under the table and melt into the shadows like a rat.

Perhaps literally.

“But the whole reason you and Magnus are together is because you met when you did, right?”

Alec blinks at Simon because really, he’s trying way too hard to win this.  Alec suddenly has a suspicion that perhaps it’s either because Simon wants downworlder credit for helping introduce them, or it's for a bet.

Simon’s been notorious at betting with Maia, Lily and Gretel and while it’s kept on the downlow who wins and who loses, Alec’s heard the stakes are intense.

“I mean, while watching Magnus kill a rogue shadowhunter certainly charmed me, it wasn't the best setting to get to know each other.” Alec smirks, “I would have been just as charmed to see him come check the wards. I don’t think there’s a universe or setting imaginable where I wouldn’t be interested the moment I saw Magnus.”

“I can assure you darling, I feel the same.”

Magnus' voice comes from beside them and Alec gets up automatically, turning to find Magnus there, arms ready to come around him.

There’s a moment where they greet, lips meeting in casual tenderness before parting and Alec lets himself relax into the possessive hands of his husband. Fingers dip greedily beneath his shirt as Magnus palms the small of his back and then trails his fingers further still.

“Alexander and I were always going to meet eventually.” Magnus looks at the table with the same amount of aloof boredom he exudes around Lorenzo Rey and his ilk. “In fact I believe I could have wooed him within a day, if your presence and actions hadn’t backed him into a corner. In fact he never would have gotten engaged if he’d made drinks with me, I can assure you that. However, why did he miss drinks? Oh, because you and Simon ran off and then got yourselves kidnapped.”

Ah.

Alec had forgotten that Magnus is still nursing quite a grudge about the whole thing.  Especially when Alec had also admitted that if it hadn't been for Clary, he probably would have been in Magnus' arms if not his bed very quickly. 

Clary’s presence had brought both the eye of the Clave and the focus of Alec’s parents and that is why he’d backed off and been so hesitant. 

However, if Alec had a chance to have an actual date or night with Magnus, like the drinks they never got, he probably would have enough of a taste to stand up for what he wanted. As it is, Alec hadn’t been willing to risk everything on just a possibility, but if Magnus and he had gotten that opportunity before the wedding kiss.

Well, anything could have happened.

And Magnus knows it.

Alec presses another kiss to Magnus' jaw to hide the smirk tugging at his own lips.

“At least I invited you to the wedding.” Izzy offers, as if trying to deflate the entire debacle.

“Izzy. I really don’t think you want to hear mine or Magnus’ thoughts about the wedding and why it was even brought up.”

Izzy seems to remember then that she was a part of the cause and she shoves a handful of colorful candy in her mouth.

“As delightful as it is to hear you all try to take credit for mine and Alexander’s relationship—” here Magnus gives them all a cold, steady stare. Because while not entirely caused by them alone, almost every hurdle in their relationship has been caused or started by his siblings and Clary or Simon.  Even if it was just the situation they found themselves in. “I’ve already let you have him for longer than agreed upon. I’d like my husband all to myself for once.” 

Alec gives a polite nod and just steps closer and away with Magnus, that’s as much as a goodbye as they’re getting from him tonight.

“You’re early.” Alec murmurs once he’s sure he’s been touching Magnus long enough for Magnus' sound-muffling ring to encompass him as well.

“Well they didn’t notice and someone texted me. They seemed to think there was about to be a brawl if I didn’t come to collect you.”

“I wasn’t about to start a fight.” Alec is offended, he was using his words. Not his fists or weapons.

“Not you darling, the topic of conversation was bringing up some bad memories. Hardly your fault—” well actually, it technically is since Alec normally keeps this kind of discussion behind sound-proofed walls.

However they implied things about him and Magnus that Alec couldn’t allow. As if their relationship is contingent on anything other than instinct and want combined with effort.

This might make tensions for Clary a bit rough again but she’s handled and inflicted worse. Maybe this will finally teach her and Simon to be more careful with their words, but Alec feels like that’s just wishful thinking.

another malec headcanon

Since marriages between warlocks are rare and even rarer for warlocks to follow their old marital traditions, I like to think that Alec wanted to follow one of them after he had rings made for Magnus and himself: the wedding rings are enchanted. Yes, like the faerie rings used in TMI. It's suggested that there are more such rings forged by fairies, but I don't think these were made by them. In my headcanon, these rings are similar to those of fairies, perhaps an old common custom that branched into two opposite poles. I imagine that warlock rings have the same abilities: they possess the power to give the wearers the ability to communicate telepathically with one another regardless of distance and to transmit thoughts, words, or emotions. The difference is that these must be custom-made by witches from The Spiral Labyrinth or enchanted by them.

Since Magnus can't have a love rune on his chest and feel "that connection" that Nephilim feel with their spouses, I think it would be a beautiful touch if he had this kind of telepathic connection with Alec, and it would be a good demonstration of his downworlder race, just like the Lightwood flame pattern.

I also think it would be funny. And hot.

I love Malec's wedding rings. I love that they're plain gold, I love that they have the Lightwood flame pattern, I love that they have "Aku Cinta Kamu" on the inside to show the heritage of both members of the couple. I can't wait to learn more about them and read about them being mentioned in future scenes!!!

I was tagged by @my-rose-tinted-glasses thank you love! I have a lot of favorite tropes, I decided to choose the first 3 that came to my mind (tbh I don't even know if you can call them tropes, is a character type a trope? 🤔):

Height difference 😛

Edit: I should have actually chosen this ✨excellent✨ example in this category: Alec and Magnus. Along with SE and Nagron these would be my three favorites 💖

2. A Strong Protector / A Knight in Shing Armour 🤩 when one of the couple defends the other, physically and verbally (the latter is quite rare tbh), who would actively put up their body as a shield. Also including "touch him and you die" trope my beloved. In general, I love it when someone in the couple is strong (not necessarily stronger than the other, just strong) and uses their strength to defend and protect their partner and other people, is caring and protective, people can rely on them

3. Crazy/jokester/sad/unhinged/a little pathetic/clown character 😍 a gremlin type, who has a reputation as a lunatic among people, who also masks their trauma, depression, their innate kindness that has been abused with their "madness" 🥺

Honorable mention: These two couples somehow fit all of the above categories: height difference (Saint and Shin are similar height, but Saint is massive), they are all crazy gremlins 😭 they all have traumas that they mask in various ways - often with jokes and being crazy and unhinged, they are all obsessed with their loved ones that they would die and kill for

I - THE WARLOCK

Upright: willpower, desire, creation, manifestation

Reversed: trickery, illusions, out of touch

Relevancy: Magnus is one of, if not the most prominent character in the Shadowhunter Chronicles, appearing and being the main helper consistently throught out different series and generations of shadowhunter. The card also represent both sides of magic - rooted from his demonic origin

VI - LOVE

Based on: VI - The Lovers

Upright: partnerships, duality, union

Reversed: loss of balance, one-sidedness, disharmony

Relevancy: A lot of overlapping details with Alec's card. It's interesting how for them, it is unclear where the angel wing is from, as from a certain angel, it looks like Magnus is shielding Alec with his wing or it just curl up around Alec in contentment. For a chaotic character who secretly crave peace and serenity, this card seem appropriate

XXI - THE WORLD

Based on: XXI - The World

Upright: fulfillment, harmony, completion

Reversed: incompletion, no closure

Relevancy: Maybe to symbolize how Magnus is seeking for fulfillment in life. Also he can be seen as a figure of harmony for shadowhunter who's seeking his help

Upright: friendship, community, happiness

Reversed: overindulgence, gossip, isolation

Relevancy: Magnus's hedonistic side. Ludus is playful love, full of lust with no promise of commitment or responsibility, it certainly rings through to the Magnus of this era

IV - FEARLESS - FOUR OF RUNES

Based on: Four of Cups

Upright: apathy, contemplation, disconnectedness

Reversed: sudden awareness, choosing happiness, acceptance

Relevancy: In contrast to the previous card, this one may symbolize Magnus courage's in choosing Alec, something promise peace but also unpredictable and full of challenges. A fun observation, out of all five of Magnus's tarot cards so far, Alec is featured in nearly half of them (2/5)

Theory Time

A new Tarot Card for Magnus can be Death (end of cycle, beginnings, change, metamorphosis vs fear of change, holding on, stagnation, decay) or an Eldest Curses The Wheel of Fortune (change, cycles, inevitable fate vs no control, clinging to control, bad luck card) with Tessa

Bringing back this AU concept i thought of a long while back where Alec loses his memories at the end of the Shadowhunters TV universe instead of Clary as punishment for not only summoning a Prince of Hell but wagering deals with one or whatever idk I didn't get that far but ANYWAYS.

Him living with his mom and going to college while working at a cute coffee shop / wearing a pride pin on his apron and Magnus being his favorite customer because he always tips him really well :(

And wait over time he’d develop a crush on Magnus but like he doesn’t want to say anything because the man is a customer and he’s obviously married by the looks of the wedding ring on his finger :((

He likes Friday night shifts because that’s open mic night and there’s this band called Rock Solid Panda that plays and they sound ok plus the singer’s friend had really weird tattoos that Alec just can’t seem to wrap his head around :(((

And the lead singer's girlfriend once called him hermano when he came to clean up their dishes after a show and now his coworkers tease him about it, but strangely, she does sort of look like him :((((

Sometimes him and his classmates go to this bar after a really hard exam and the bartender is nice and funny and they like to share complaints about annoying customers they had both dealt with that week but he feels bad for her because she has a big scar on her neck :(((((

And he’s not really the religious type but his mom insist they go to church some nights, and there’s this new pastor there, he seems young but he’s good, in fact sometimes if he looks over his shoulder he thinks he sees a man that looks like Magnus standing in the back, he looks proud??

Also he likes to donate blood at the local hospital sometimes, the nurse there is really sweet, he asks her about the drawings pinned on her station wall, she smiles softly and tells him her daughter drew them. But why do one of the men in the drawings look like him :(((((

Oh and some nights when he’s drowning in homework his mom’s boyfriend comes by and brings Chinese food, Alec really likes it and asks Luke to show him a menu for the next time he wants to order it, but, that’s a strange name for lo mein, and what are seelie kelp noodles?

He typically works the closing shifts at work, he tends to prefer the night shifts because they are slower and he can focus on his school load, he loved being a public policy major but god was there a lot of reading. He heard about a study method that included scribbling on a piece of paper while he read. One time, he was locked in on chapter when he heard the front door chime and in walked a tall blonde man in a leather jacket, when he greeted the man he looked downright nauseous, which, Alec wasn't sure what was to be said about his own appearance in that moment. The man ordered a black coffee to go but avoided eye contact with him which confused Alec even more, but nonetheless he turned to the coffee maker and began to pour him a cup.

It was when he turned back to hand him the cup, when things got weird. The other man was staring intensely at his notebook, thinking he was probably confused by the random scribbles he went to explain when he realized the page was indeed not filled with random scribbles but rather the same scribble over and over again.

The man left before Alec could say anything more, leaving him with the cup of coffee. But something changed in that moment, seeing the unintentional drawing, its resemblance to the tattoos he had seen all around him but this one specifically not being one he had seen on any of his customers, coupled with this strange man who, if Alec was completely honest, felt like someone he knew deeply, maybe in this life or another.

So strange, definitely a story to tell his mom once he got home.

I think it’s very interesting that Alec’s full name is Alexander.

Alexander means ‘man’s defender’ which is often his tactical position during fights. He defends the perimeter with his bow and often gets the brunt of attacks.

Although it fits perfectly with his identity as a Shadowhunter, it also fits nicely with his personality.

Alec is very defensive over the people he loves:

- He threatens Clary over Jace

- Kills Meliorn when searching for Magnus (insane moment that cemented him as my favourite character)

- Was adverse to Simon dating his sister (who he’s extremely protective of)

Even with his sons he’s always defending them, he worked hard to make sure Rafael was adopted properly.

Headcanons I just love so much:

Magnus has no sense of direction. As in absolutely zero.

Alec is not a morning person when he doesn't have to work, and will drag Magnus back to bed for extra naps and cuddles

Magnus plays with his jewelry when nervous or anxious

Alec does not give one single fuck about mundane law or culture. Mundanes are clueless, carefree beings, running around like ants. The only good thing about them are their soap operas, which he hate watches.

And he's always talking about how much he wants to "ravish" Alec. But their entire love story fits the plot honestly. Hero introduces heroine to the world of desire and passion, and heroine has to choose between the life she's always wanted for herself, or this sexy man with rippling abs who society doesn't want her to have.

Alec: talk about Magnus's body again and I'll find a stake and use you as a wall decoration.

Simon: ...I guess he's a little more violent than most regency heroines but there are variations to the genre.
