The U.S.-military-backed Bolivian forces captured Guevara on 8 October while battling his band of guerillas in Bolivia and assassinated him the following day. While the Cuban photographer Alberto Korda may not be known to many by his name, his monochromatic portrait of Ernesto “Che” Guevara has traveled around the world and is one of the most reproduced images in history. Korda was a fashion photographer until the onset of the Cuban Revolution in 1953 changed the course of his career. He documented the leaders of the armed insurrection for the newly-established publication Revolution and later became Fidel Castro’s personal photographer for 10 years.
