A pihenőhely melletti kis hulladékgyűjtőt Barna Péter és Méhes Tamás készítette társadalmi munkában. A munkálatokat szorgalmazta és tevékenyen részt vett bennük Sarkadi Attila a körzet önkormányzati képviselője. Az elhelyezendő pihenő padot Vicsi László Polgármester ajánlotta fel.

Last Chance

There’s a scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail that illustrates the futility of fighting long after the battle has been lost. In it, King Arthur and his able-bodied assistant Patsy come upon the Black Knight deep in the forest. The Knight bellows, “None shall pass!” and a sword fight ensues.

King Arthur methodically slices off one limb after another, until the Black Knight is but a bloody torso. “Just a flesh wound,” the Knight proclaims proudly, unwilling to accept the fact that he has just lost. There’s no reasoning with a man who thinks he can still bite his way to victory.

The same can be said of Eddie Lampert, the embattled Chairman of Sears, who has just been granted an extension on life. A bankruptcy court just granted his wish to purchase what’s left of the once-prominent retail chain. He hopes to save 50,000 jobs and keep 400 stores open in the process.

The only problem is that Lampert and Company don’t have any limbs left, and Sears is so beaten up that I doubt it could gum somebody to death, much less bite them.

Like most people of my age, I have many fond memories of Sears. It was where Mom and Dad bought school clothing for my brother and me, where I bought my first 45RPM record, where Dad bought his tools and car batteries, and where Mom selected the appliances she wanted. Somewhere along the way, it lost its vision, its edge, as competitors one by one beat them at their game.

In 2005, when Sears and Kmart merged, there were 3500 stores between them. There are barely 750 remaining, including the 400 Sears that will remain after the latest round of closings. Any company that shrinks by 80% is in serious trouble, and no amount of stalling is going to help them.

It’s only going to prolong what has been a slow, painful death. Who among us wants to shop at a store (either one of them) that lost relevance more than a decade ago?

Frankly, I am surprised the bankruptcy court ruled in favor of Lampert. It’s not like the Sears filing was any surprise, as we have all known this was coming for years. Apparently Sears never filled out a DNR form, because the judge has essentially said every effort must be expended to keep this chain on life support. Apparently corporate resuscitation is something to be handed out even when everyone knows otherwise.

As one who has seen a dear family member kept alive artificially 10 days longer than necessary, death is the best thing that can happen here. Sears should just be allowed to go to sleep one last time, and get it over with. Each time someone hooks up a fresh tank of oxygen, the company loses a little more dignity in the process.

Lampert is the personification of the mythical Black Knight, while Competition is King Arthur. And Competition has sliced off every last limb of Sears. All the denial in the world is not going to change that. Sears and Kmart both could once boastfully say “None shall pass!” but those days are over.

The real pansy is anyone who thinks that extending another lifeline to Sears is going to somehow change the ending to this story.

BERTJAN POT

Bertjan Pot is the designer I researched. His work in lighting and other objects really interested me. Pot is very focused on experimentation and most of his experiments start impulsively fueled by a curiosity for how an object would function or how something would look. Pot challenges manufacturers to explore possibilities and push traditional design limitations.

I was particularly interested in Pots material experimentation with his Random Light (1999) and Holes (2011). In creating Random Light, Pot begins with a resin drained yarn which he coils around an inflatable beach ball creating a translucent 3D fabric. He then deflates the beach ball and removes it through an opening within the lamp. The final product conveys a simplicity and softness that is undeniable. His use of translucent materials helped me to refine what ideas I ended up exploring. I went from exploring quite broadly how light was passing through my object (the plate), to exploring opacity and translucency. Random Light is part of a collection in Victoria and Albert Museum, London. When creating Holes, Pots was Inspired by kites and maths. Holes was made of 20 triangles, 30 bars, 12 connectors and 57 small holes. Holes is made with Tyvek, a non-woven and technological material made from polyethylene fibers, lightweight, waterproof, with high tear-resistance and completely recyclable. Holes is an interesting light that inspired my making process for my final object. The use of sticks and fabric and the overall simplicity of the design was something I wanted to mimic in my final object. I really like how the fabric has the dimming effect on the light because of its opacity.

To understand why Pot creates the pieces he does I decided to look into his history. It was actually surprisingly hard to find lots of information about his early life. However I did find this; Bertjan Pot was born in 1975 in Nieuwleusen, The Netherlands.  He graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1988, and began his career using the moniker The Monkey Boys with fellow designer Daniel White. In 2003, Pot started designing under the name Studio Bertjan Pot, which he continues to use, working alongside Vladi Rapaport and Marjolein Fase. Based in Schiedam, the studio produces interior products marked by a highly experimental approach and a fascination with technique, texture, structure, pattern, and color. In addition to self-initiated pieces, Studio Bertjan Pot collaborates with companies and institutions such as Moooi, Montis, Established & Sons, Alturo Alvarez, Richard Lampert, Den Herder Production House, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, and the AUDAX Textielmuseum Tilburg. Bertjan Pot has a very interesting approach to redesigning the mundane. Pots experimentation with material positively affects the outcome of his objects designed. By playing around with lots of different materials and trying out different forms which the material can be used upon, a better resolved final experiment (produced object) is expected. By looking at his past we can understand his material choice and begin to understand the reasoning behind his choices. In the Netherlands, sustainable materials are frequently used within furniture and Pots objects are no exception. His work is noticeably influenced by his Dutch culture and his environment (other designers). This influence from other designers because of collaboration has allowed for a greater knowledge of the making process. Which Pot can apply himself or alter for new applications which in turn allows him to design new and innovative designs.

Bertjan Pot (1975, Nieuwleusen, Países Bajos) se graduó en la Academia de Diseño de Eindhoven en 1998 y comenzó a trabajar bajo el nombre de The Monkey Boys con su colega diseñador Daniel White.

Algunas de sus piezas destacadas son : la lámpara Pot’s Random Light (1999), vendida a través de Moooi, es un hilo de fibra de vidrio drenado con resina que se enrolla al azar alrededor de un gran globo, lo que produce su delicada y sutil forma esférica. Suena simple, pero tardó 3 años para desarrollarlo.

Carbon Chair (2004). Esta silla de carbono se realiza en colaboración con Marcel Wanders (se vende a través de Moooi), está enrollada a mano y es 100% fibra de carbono y epoxi sin marco de metal.

El patrón del asiento parece producto del azar -“y las personas que me conocen saben que me gusta aleatorio“- pero en realidad cada punto en el borde de la silla está conectado con los 4 puntos que conectan el asiento al bastidor.

La lámpara Downstairs (2012) empezó como Stairway to heaven, un proyecto especial que hicieron para un café-teatro no muy lejos de su Estudio.

No es una lámpara de araña convencional, en realidad es una escalera de aluminio colgada del techo con una cadena y “forrada” de luces como de feria ¿Quién habría pensado que esta araña ganaría el primer Premio Frame-Moooi (2012) y se convertiría en un producto real en la colección de DHPH?.

El trabajo de Pot está incluido en las colecciones permanentes de las principales instituciones del planeta, como el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York (Carbon Chair); Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres (Shrunken Bench y Random Light); Museo Boijmans van Veuningen en Rotterdam (prototipo de silla al azar, copia de carbono, jarrón excavado); el Stedelijk Museum de Ámsterdam (silla aleatoria, copia de carbono y silla de carbono); la Colección Nacional Francesa de Arte y el Textilmuseum Tillburg (puente, fuente del telar, luz de bolsillo, y máscaras).
