NBA playoff predictions: 1 big question about each Eastern Conference series

The SB Nation communities preview every first round series in the East.

The Eastern Conference playoffs feature three heavy favorites and five other teams looking to make a Cinderella run to the NBA Finals. The Philadelphia 76ers have the homecourt advantage throughout the conference playoffs by finishing with the No. 1 seed, but the Brooklyn Nets are looming as the betting favorite to win it all. The Milwaukee Bucks are also lurking as they enter the postseason with an improved roster following last year’s early exit in the bubble.

The Eastern Conference playoffs get underway on May 22 and will lead up to the start of the NBA Finals on July 8. As the first round kicks off, the conference features four exciting series with storylines galore from every perspective.

Now that the playoffs are finally here, we asked the SB Nation NBA communities to preview their team’s matchup by asking one big question about each series. The communities also gave their predictions on who will win the series, as did staffers Sabreena Merchant, Sydney Umeri, and Ricky O’Donnell.

Offensive efficiency: 76ers 112.5 (13th) | Wizards 110.7 (17th)

Defensive efficiency: 76ers 107 (2nd) | Wizards 112.3 (20th)

Net rating: 76ers +5.5 (5th) | Wizards -1.6 (22nd)

Season series: 76ers 3-0. Philadelphia swept the season series.

The Sixers swept the season series 3-0, but all of those games took place before the Wizards saved their season starting in April. Given Washington’s current hot streak and mid-season additions (led by Daniel Gafford), do you think the Wizards can make this series competitive?

Steve Lipman of Liberty Ballers: The Philadelphia in me deeply wants to hedge my bets here just in case, but short of significant injury, I really don’t see a path for Washington to make this series competitive. Throughout the season, the Sixers have done a really good job of punishing teams that cannot match them, physically, and Washington is a much smaller team than Philly. Embiid, Simmons and Harris should be able to hunt mismatches on the court all throughout the series, and by doing so create enough advantages either at the rim or beyond the arc to rack up points on the shoddy Wizards defense.

I guess there’s a universe where Simmons, Thybulle and company simply cannot keep up with Beal and Westbrook’s offensive output, thus stealing a couple of games for the Wiz, but I think it’s unlikely. Davis Bertans is basically guaranteed to shoot 75% from 3 against the Sixers in round one after struggling mightily in the play-in games, you can write that in stone. But Davis can’t do it on his own. Ultimately, I just think the Sixers’ defense is too good to get victimized by this Washington team in a really meaningful way, and the Sixers’ personnel is tailor-made to take advantage of the Wizards’ poor defense. — @SteveJLipman

Jeff Clark from Celtics Blog: Predicting what the Boston Celtics will do from game to game or even quarter by quarter is a fool’s errand. However, given that I am a foolish fan, I’ll give it a shot anyway. If this series is to play out in a similar way to how the season has gone, we’ll see the Celtics come out flat and lose the first three games and the entire fanbase will start wearing black and sharpening pitchforks. They will then go on an absolute tear, winning three straight games and getting up the hopes of every optimist fan. That will of course be followed up by a game 7 loss in which the team tries really hard but can’t hit a shot to save their lives and Brooklyn’s 9th man goes off for 27 points.

Seriously though, the variability of this team really is maddening. Blame injuries, COVID, the schedule, or inexperience if you like. The bottom line is that they haven’t been consistent all season long and missing Jaylen Brown isn’t going to help that at all. Perhaps Jayson Tatum can carry the team to a win or two but ultimately there’s too much talent on Brooklyn’s side. I’ll be optimistic and say Nets in 6. — @CelticsBlog

Chris Milholen of Nets Daily: The Nets ‘Big Three’ of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden played only eight games together and as we all know, what separates great teams from championship teams is common history and elite chemistry in the postseason.

All three players have stressed to us over the course of the final weeks of the season that the lack of common history isn’t a problem nor a concern since their talent will make up for it. Although the ‘Big Three’ played even less games with key role players on the team, I believe their talent will make up for that lack of common history in the first round.

I believe Brooklyn will prevail over Boston in five games (4-1). The Nets are approaching the postseason as “a new season” and due to finishing second in the East, Brooklyn has had an extended period of rest mixed in with practices that have been focused on solidifying chemistry in different groups and lineups of players. Like Brad Steven’s said on Tuesday, it’s hard to see this team losing, so I’ll be going with Nets in five games. — @CMilholenSB

The Heat shocked the NBA by upsetting the Bucks in the bubble in last year’s playoffs. Is Milwaukee better prepared for a matchup with Miami this year?

Kyle Carr of BrewHoop: Milwaukee’s offseason moves were a response to their dismal bubble performance and the need to convince Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign the supermax and stay in Milwaukee. Trading Eric Bledsoe, who had another disappointing playoffs, was the biggest priority and Milwaukee found an upgrade in Jrue Holiday, who has brought the Bucks a two-way performance that’s been needed. The Bucks also added Bobby Portis and Bryn Forbes to provide some offensive firepower and PJ Tucker midseason to help with their defense.

The Bucks have spent most of this season tweaking their tactics, namely adding a player to the “dunker spot” on offense and switching on defense. All of these changes, plus an improved performance from Giannis, should put Milwaukee in a better position to be prepared for Miami this year. There will be some nervy moments, but with the previously mentioned adjustments, complete focus on basketball (which they did not have last year in the bubble with COVID-19 and the shooting of Jacob Blake) and playing in front of fans in an increased capacity Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee will look to show that last year was just a mixture of poor performances and bad luck. — @KyleCoche

The Miami Heat’s upset over the Milwaukee Bucks last year stands as perhaps the team’s biggest upset playoff victory — knocking off the No. 1 overall seed in just five games. And yes, Jimmy Butler was amazing. But aside from Butler’s greatness, Miami also pulled off the upset thanks to varied contributions from other players.

Jae Crowder and Kelly Olynyk are both no longer with Miami. Dragic has regressed, and it seems ambitious to expect he’ll deliver another superb playoff performance this year. How can the Heat recapture that same balanced attack? The Heat will need Butler and Bam Adebayo to play like All-NBA and All-Defensive Team players in this first-round playoff series. But to pull off another upset and embarrass the Bucks yet again, the other players need to contribute.

Offensive efficiency: Knicks 110.2 (22nd) | Hawks 112.1 (18th)

Both of these teams blew past preseason expectations this year. Whose success feels more sustainable for playoff basketball?

Zach Hood of Peachtree Hoops: I think both teams are legitimately good as currently constructed. However, New York enjoyed extremely hot three-point shooting late in the season, and had a few guys post career or near career marks from deep. The Hawks battled injuries all season and finished with the same 41-31 record as the Knicks. It feels like Atlanta at its peak would be the better team if they could get everyone on the floor at the same time, something they really haven’t done for an extended period this season. De’Andre Hunter appears to be ready to go for the series, so they may be as close to full strength as they have been all season when the series tips off Sunday evening. If Atlanta can stay healthy, I think they are the team with the higher ceiling.

I’m going Hawks in 7. New York is certainly going to battle and nothing will be easy. It’s also tough to pick against them in their building in a Game 7, but that’s what I’m doing here. Ultimately, a great deal of respect is due to New York for the season they have put together, but if the Hawks can keep the three-point line under control defensively, I think they will take this series. — @ZHood_

Joe Flynn from Posting and Toasting: I would disagree with the idea that the Hawks blew past preseason expectations. I think most experts had them contending for a playoff spot in the East after all their offseason improvements, albeit at a lower seed. The Knicks, on the other hand, finished damn near 20 wins higher than their preseason Vegas line in a 72-game season. That’s almost unprecedented.

The Hawks are the more talented team across the board, and that usually wins out in the postseason. The Knicks are carrying around the millstone that is Elfrid Payton - the league’s worst starting PG - despite the fact that Tom Thibodeau has 3-4 superior guards on the bench. That didn’t hurt them too often in the regular season, but it’ll catch up with them now. — @ChinaJoeFlynn

This is red meat for the duly indoctrinated in the mainstream political parties, but in case you thought that Trump’s impeachment and subsequent acquittal would calm the waters and draw the final curtain on a five-month Greek comedy, the woke lunatics and their Girondist media allies have decided the show must go on.

And who can we blame? Why the Confederacy, of course, the fly in the ointment of good American government. If it wasn’t for those dastardly traitors of 1861 and their political progeny, America would be a glorious City Upon a Hill.

CNN’s John Harwood seems to think something nefarious is afoot from below the Mason Dixon:

While he clearly doesn’t know basic American geography or history, he certainly knows that the Confederacy is behind whatever problems ail America. How could these modern Confederates be so blind to the necessity of John Bolton’s important testimony, the same John Bolton whom leftists consistently called an untrustworthy warmonger until he had some dirt on Trump? They held the right opinion of Bolton before the show required a plot twist making the enemy of their enemy their friend. Except every viewer knew the end of the story before it showed up on the small screen. These people telegraph their punches like a drunk itching for a bar fight.

But Harwood’s geographic determinism thinly veils his real motivation: these Republicans who voted against his wishes are racist just like their ancestor traitors to the United States. And people wonder why Southerners still cling to the War, God, and guns.

The left won’t let them forget, except if they want to pack up or demolish a few hundred statues and remove the Confederate flag from every public space in the South.

“Hey deplorable, the War is over, except when we say it isn’t over.”

Of course, we all know that an independent South would be a vastly different country than the United States. The late Bill Cawthon did a splendid job explaining how several years ago.

And some leftists get it. The failed impeachment process has brought these woke secessionists out of the closet:

I’m all for it. “Jesusland” would be a pretty nice place to live and would be freed from the burden of being constantly overruled by some Yankee self-righteous do-gooder. It does, however, makes you wonder if “kim” realized that Trump is a byproduct of the U.S. of Canada? Maybe all these loving people north of the border are just bombastic jerks after all. Nah. That would make them Yankees, and Yankees are supposed to be the good guys.

Several hundred thousands dead Southerners would tell a different story, but what do they know? They were the ones who had the backbone to let the North go in peace in 1861 if they just sent the bluecoats back over the Mason Dixon. They tried “Jesusland” but were blown to pieces by Lincoln’s cannons. If they had their way, “kim” would already be living in a separate country.

And while the founding generation worried about the prospect of secession, very few would have wanted to go to war to prevent it. Patriots don’t kill other patriots, especially those who understood that self-determination is the bedrock of the American political tradition.

So who are the real traitors to America again?

 Albert Miller, 72

Mr. Albert Junior Miller, age 72 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at his home.

               Funeral services were  March 5, at Hinshaw Street Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Collins and Rev. Robert Wiles officiating. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

               Mr. Miller was born September 16, 1946 in Ashe County to James Wiley Miller and Mary Estella Miller. He was retired from the Town of North Wilkesboro as the Superintendent of  Streets. Mr. Miller was a former North Wilkesboro Fireman, former coach of Little League Ball, an avid bowler; at which he won several trophies and other prizes and was a CB enthusiast.

               In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Geneva Laws Miller, two sons; Roy Guy Miller and Kenneth Lee Miller, three sisters; Grace Miller Roberts, Blanche Miller Baker and Martha Deanie Miller Myers and four brothers; Wiley James (JL) Miller, Virgil Miller, Roy Miller and Harrold Gene Miller.

               He is survived by a daughter in law; Tammy Wood, a grandson; Allen James Miller a brother; Herbert Charles Miller of Rock Creek and several nieces and nephews.

               Flowers will be accepted.

  Sue Johnson, 78

Sue Carol Johnson, age 78, of Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019 at her home. She was born July 12, 1940 in Moore County to Perry and Tixie Lovella Mabe Brewer. Ms. Johnson was retired from Bryan Mills and a member of Fern Hill Baptist Church in Statesville. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Joann Johnston.

               Surviving are her children, Brenda Roberts and husband Martin of North Wilkesboro, Linda Sprinkle of Wilkesboro, Terri Laws of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Kim Sprinkle and Clark Sprinkle both of North Wilkesboro; eleven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Mr. Ronald Smith Robinson, age 59 of Millers Creek, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at his home.

               Funeral services were March 5,   at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Danny Dillard and Rev. Stanley Wyatt officiating. Burial was  in Scenic Memorial Gardens.  

               Mr. Robinson was born September 11, 1959 in Forsyth County to Johnnie Wake and Ettie Sue Watts Robinson. He was retired from Schneider Mills. Mr. Robinson was a great Father. He worked hard all his life, was a good hearted person and loved all his family.

               He was preceded in death by his Mother and a sister; Sandy Robinson Wyatt.

               Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife; Virginia Aliene Crane Robinson of the home, his father; Johnnie Wake Robinson, three daughters; Kimberly Jimenez Garcia, Melissa Jimenez Garcia and Amber Robinson all of Millers Creek and a son; Michael Greene of Millers Creek, five grandchildren; Rosa Robinson, Maria Robinson, Lucero Robinson, Ronald Greene and Romero Robinson, a great grandchild; Elizabeth McManus, a sister; Linda Kirby and two brothers; John Paul Robinson and Fred Allen Robinson.

Jewell Ruth Teague, age 68, of Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She was born March 17, 1950 in Wilkes County to Dewey and Hope Ingool Teague. Ms. Teague was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church; enjoyed blue grass and gospel music. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Gary, Fred and David Teague.

               Surviving are her daughter, Jennifer Minton Greene and husband Ronald of Hays; sister, Betty Anderson and husband Joe of Millers Creek; brother, William Teague of Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Ronald Greene II, Mallory Greene, and Kevin Greene all of Hays; niece, Misty Laws of Wilkesboro; nephew, Gregory Laws and wife Marie of Millers Creek; great nieces, Emily Shew, Aubrey Laws; and great nephew, D.J. Laws.

Charles Keith Byrd, age 57, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 16, 1961 in Wilkes County to Charles Gleathen and Marie Smithey Byrd. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church and previously employed with Millers Bee Farm. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his father; his wife, Kimberly Gilreath Byrd.

               Surviving are his son, Brandon Keith Byrd and wife April of Millers Creek; daughter, Megan Marie Byrd of North Wilkesboro; his mother, Marie Smithey of Hays; brother, Scott Byrd and wife Charlotte of Traphill; and grandchildren, Kyra Rose Byrd, Cobe Pennington and Derek Pennington,

Jerry Anderson, 71

Jerry Roger Anderson, age 71, of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville. He was born August 16, 1947 in Wilkes County to Marshall Mott Anderson, Jr. and Ruby Viola Marlowe Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. He loved spending time in Maggie Valley with his wife of almost 51 years; riding his Harley-Davidson trike; and loved grandchildren and family. Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his father.

Mrs. Eutha Spencer Hix, age 90 of Winston Salem, formerly of Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, February 25, 2019 at Arbor Acres in Winston Salem.

               Memorial services were February 27,  in Robinson Hall at Arbor Acres in Winston Salem with Rev. Dr. Tim Roberts officiating. Entombment was in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

               Mrs. Hix was born October 21, 1928 in High Point to James Ross Spencer Sr. and wife Nonnie Susan Morris Spencer. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Hix was a member of First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro since 1949, volunteered with the American Red Cross and served on the ADAP Board. The greatest joy of her later life came with the arrival of her three grandchildren.

               She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother; Ross Spencer, Jr. and her sister; Irene Joines.

               Mrs. Hix is survived by her husband; James Richard Hix, III of the home,  three daughters; Mel Shinaman and husband Brad of Moravian Falls, Jenny Hix of Wilkesboro and Kathryn Hix-Boyette and husband Tom of Winston Salem, three grandchildren; Daniel Shinaman, Jay Shinaman and Stephanie Shinaman, a sister; Marie Reddeck of Trinity, NC and a brother; Donald Spencer of Raleigh.

Mr. Kenneth (Ken) Ronnie Hamby, Jr. age 49 of Millers Creek, passed away Monday, February 25, 2019.

               Funeral services were March 1st,   at Welcome Home Baptist Church with Pastor Lyn Lambert,  Rev. John Triplett and Rev. Billy Shepherd officiating. Burial was in Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Millers Creek.  

               Mr. Hamby was born April 4, 1969 in Wilkes County to Kenneth Ronnie Hamby, Sr. and Willa Dean Bumgarner Hamby. He retired from North Carolina DOT in 2017 as an Area Materials Engineer and was currently employed by DRMP Incorporated. Ken was a member and Deacon at Welcome Home Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro.

               He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; Edgar and Brona Hamby and Dewey and Louisa Bumgarner.

Clyde Eddie Faw, age 75, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, February 25, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born February 6, 1944 in Wilkes County to Arthur Lee and Margaret Lucille Johnson Faw. Clyde was a member of Friendship Church of the Brethren. Mr. Faw was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Charles Lee Faw; and sister, Margaret Louise Pierce.

               Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Sheets Faw; son, Russell Gene Faw of North Wilkesboro; daughter, Rita Gail Shumate and husband Billy of North Wilkesboro; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Ware of North Wilkesboro; brother, Tommy Lee Faw and wife Bertha of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Mary Ruth Gilbert of Taylorsville, Kathy Marie Pennington and husband Butch, Lisa Ann Flinchum all of North Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews.

 Victoria Stinson, 68

Victoria "Vicki" Elledge Stinson, age 68, of Sanford, was promoted to Heaven, Monday, February 25, 2019. She was born October 30, 1950 in Wilkes County to Hazel Lawrence and Pauline Elizabeth Peacock Elledge. Mrs. Stinson was a faithful Christian. She enjoyed reading, particularly the Bible; sewing, and spending time with her five grandkids. Vicki was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Doug Elledge.

Mrs. Judy Ann Brown Alexander, age 73 of North Wilkesboro, passed away February 24, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston Salem.

               Funeral services were February 28,  at Northside Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Seth Whitley and Mr. Jason Richardson officiating.   Burial was in Middle Cross Baptist Church cemetery.  

               Mrs. Alexander was born March 23, 1945 in Wilkes County to Charlie Franklin and Myrtle Estelle Brown. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Church.

               In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister; Nancy Anderson and five brothers; Ernest Brown, Harrison Brown, Wade Brown, Wayne Brown and Raymond Brown.

               She is survived by her husband; Brother Jerry Alexander of the home,  three daughters; Sandy Richardson and husband Wayne of Hays, Dawn Alexander and Pam Alexander both of North Wilkesboro, a sister; Ruth Mitchell and husband Tommy of Hays and a brother Bill Brown and wife Barbara of North Wilkesboro, a grandson; Jason Richardson and a great grandchild; Carly Richardson.

Lucy  Tew Pitts,  age 95 

 Lucy  Tew Pitts,  age 95 of Darby, North Carolina and formerly of Godwin, departed this life on Sunday, February 24,2019 at her home.

                She was born on May 24, 1923 in Cumberland County to the late William Franklin Tew and the late Cora Lillian Graham Tew. She was also preceded in death by her husband, one brother and 5 sisters. She was a member of Godwin Presbyterian Church.

               She leaves behind to honor her legacy her three sons: Larry Franklin Pitts and Shana Hall of Darby, NC, Anthony Dwight Pitts of Erwin, Gregory Tew Pitts of Fayetteville, NC; one daughter: Cynthia Lorraine Jones and husband Tom of Valle Crucis, NC; one sister Grace Sink of Greensboro, NC ,four grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

               A funeral service to commemorate the life of Lucy Tew Pitts was March 1,  in the parlor of Cromartie-Miller Funeral Home.  She was  laid to rest next to her husband at Lafayette Memorial Park following a private committal service.

Miguel José Ferrer (February 7, 1955 – January 19, 2017) Actor and voice actor mostly known for villainous roles, notably Bob Morton, the designer of the title character in RoboCop. He also voiced the antagonistic Hun leader Shan Yu in Mulan (1998) and Big Boss in Rio 2. Ferrer's other notable roles include Dr. Garret Macy on Crossing Jordan, NCIS Assistant Director Owen Granger on NCIS: Los Angeles, Vice President Rodriguez in Iron Man 3, and FBI forensic pathologist Albert Rosenfield in Twin Peaks.

Ferrer began his career in the early 1980s making guest appearances on episodic television. He played the younger self of his father's character on Magnum P.I in 1981.

In the early 1990s, Ferrer appeared on three primetime TV series simultaneously: as D.A. Todd Spurrier in Shannon's Deal (1989–1991), as Cajun cop Beau Jack Bowman in Broken Badges (1990–1991), and as cynical, wittily abrasive FBI forensics specialist Albert Rosenfield in Twin Peaks (1990–91). Ferrer reprised the role of Albert in the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992). He played another medical examiner on the small screen, Dr. Garret Macy, in the television crime/drama series Crossing Jordan (2001–07)

Ferrer played Jonas Bledsoe on NBC's short-lived update of the Bionic Woman series. Ferrer also starred in another short-lived NBC series, Kings, in 2009 as a military commander of Gath. He played Los Angeles Police Lieutenant Felix Valdez in the 2011 Lifetime police procedural drama, The Protector. What if NBA teams got to add one Disney character to their roster?

We drafted a Disney character for each NBA team in the bubble.

The NBA is officially in the bubble on Disney World propery, getting ready for the return of the league on July 30th. In honor of this rare situation and the option of teams adding replacement players, we decided to take time to have some fun and see what it would be like if NBA teams could draft a Disney character for their team to use on the court. This is serious stuff!

The draft order was randomly selected and the only rule was that teams must choose an original Disney character, not franchise characters from Star Wars or Marvel. So we gathered our NBA writers that have respective teams in the bubble together and held a Disney character draft.

Here are the very important results:

1. Milwaukee Bucks - Robin Hood

Not only can he serve as a primary floor general, controlling his on-court compatriots with leadership skills sharpened on commanding a forest of misfits to upend the ruling class. He’ll run point, and there won’t be any questions about his ability to nail shots from deep, whether he’s slinking around picks like he’s climbing trees in a forest or just pulling up from the halfcourt logo before defenses know what hit him. Should Eric Bledsoe falter at all in the postseason, Bud has a tried and true replacement for him. I’d even venture to guess Hood may get the call sooner rather than later in the starting lineup.

2. Houston Rockets - Jiminy Cricket

If you thought the Rockets were small before, wait till you get a look at their newest addition. Doubling down on #PocketRockets, Houston not only added the smallest player in the draft but also one of the most dynamic. Crickets can jump over 50 times their body length, making them one of the animals kingdom’s most prolific leapers. The lob game that left James Harden when Clint Capela was traded just might return with this draft pick.

In addition, Jiminy has one of the highest basketball IQs in this draft class. Being that he’s actually just the embodiment of a conscience, he always knows the right decision to make on the court.

3. New Orleans Pelicans - Simba

While Jrue Holiday, Derrick Favors and JJ Redick are a nice collection of veterans, none have an NBA championship ring sitting at home. In addition, the upcoming slate of contests will present an unprecedented challenge. There will be no crowds to create much needed momentum for players. The basketball courts at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex will be unfamiliar terrain. And as we’ve learned in recent days, the Pelicans will be without at least two key figures (Jeff Bzdelik and Jamelle McMillan) on Alvin Gentry’s coaching staff.

4. Utah Jazz - Maui

Maui? Are you kidding me? A shapeshifter fell this far? The Utah Jazz select Maui, Demi-God of the Wind and Sea, Hero of Men, and stretch four of Quin Snyder’s dreams.

Need someone to guard the perimeter? Boom. Shapeshift. Need switch onto a wing? Boom. Shapeshift. Need someone to take over in the paint? Boom. Shapeshift. AGAIN. This guy is the total package and sure to be a hit knowing Utah’s connection with the Polynesian islands.

5. Miami Heat - The Beast

His enormous ultra-athletic frame alone would be an intimidating presence in the paint, freeing up the Heat’s shooters on one end of the floor while also racking up blocks and rebounds on the other side. Whether he’s paired alongside Bam Adebayo to form a truly fearsome duo or in relief off the bench to boost the second unit, it’s a good problem to have for Erik Spoelstra and his coaching staff to see where he best fits before the games start up.

6. Washington Wizards - Mickey Mouse

This team is in desperate need of a sorcerer heading into Florida as the “cupcake” team of the field — Who else can be better than the OG of OG’s? Mickey by himself is a jack of all trades, like Bradley Beal is as a guard for Washington. Mickey can do everything on the court pretty well against smaller players. But I get it. He’s a mouse. That’s when his sorcerer hat (from Fantasia) comes in. Here, he can magically help his teammates in the post in the form of giving them a skill boost, or maybe he can magically grow himself!

7. Los Angeles Lakers - The Genie

Genie is the perfect pick for the Lakers at No. 4, because he is one of the most versatile players in this draft. With the ability to change size at will and stretch and teleport himself all over the court, Genie is exactly the type of versatile contributor that will allow the Lakers to make up for any loss with his ability to play any position. Honestly, given the scope of his powers and abilities, the Lakers may have just created an unstoppable big three.

8. Sacramento Kings - Hercules

Upon arrival, Hercules is expected to start alongside De’Aaron Fox, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Harrison Barnes and Richaun Holmes. Standing at 6’5”, Hercules, or “Herc,” is probably better suited to play the 1 or 2, but he has the strength to play the 3, 4 or 5, similar to Zion Williamson.

In addition to Hercules, the Kings are working to bring Hercules’ personal trainer Philocetes, or “Phil,” onto their training staff, according to a league source. Hercules credits Phil for all of his success to date, and the Kings could always use a player development coach.

9. Phoenix Suns - Tarzan

The strategy was simple: we needed to replace the services of Kelly Oubre, Jr.

He’s quick. He’s agile. He has a killer wingspan. He adds toughness and a mean streak to the Suns roster. He’s high-flying and strong as hell. He hangs out with apes, so you know he and the Suns Gorilla would get along splendidly. Tarzan is made for the NBA. He is a steal at #9.

10. Brooklyn Nets - Moana

Yeah, the Nets need help. Lots of help. Especially when it comes to bigs. Soooo, I went and drafted the Nets the biggest Disney character I could: Moana. The biggest, you say? Yeah, the biggest. According to Google, Moana measures at 7-feet, 6-inches tall. Say it again. 7-feet, 6-inches tall. And, with speed.

11. OKC Thunder - James P. Sullivan (Sully)

James P. Sullivan would be the perfect addition to an already-stacked Oklahoma City Thunder team because the man is scary with a sweet soul that could light up any defense. Also, watching him throw alley-oops would be fun to watch.

Sullivan is also 7’6, which in NBA terms is huge to have on a team. He could block a lot of baskets and throw the basketball down the court with ease and could easily score on everyone without much effort.

Sullivan would fit perfectly in with the Thunder because he has a laid-back attitude and I could definitely see Steven Adams and him being best of friends and scaring other teammates with each other.

12. Orlando Magic - Peter Pan

As the proven leader of the Lost Boys, Peter Pan also gives the Magic’s young core some valuable leadership they’ll need while transforming into a contending team. And just think of what some of Peter’s Pixie Dust could do for the Magic’s crucial but plodding players like Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier.

13. San Antonio Spurs - EVE (a.k.a. Eva)

What Disney character better to represent Pop’s crew than EVE, the Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator that wins the heart of the titular WAL-E?

EVE goes about her business with a calm, seemingly detached efficiency that belied the passion inside, but when the moment was big enough, was able to cut loose. EVE wreaked havoc on an abandoned shipyard in her frustration. EVE rebuilt WAL-E and sparked him back to life.

14. Toronto Raptors - Alice (Alice in Wonderland)

The on court stuff is obvious. Girl has magic mushrooms, given to her by her chain smoking caterpillar bud, that help her grow quite tall, which seems useful for basketball to me. With Marc Gasol deep in the throws of his mid-thirties and Chris Boucher being more of an erratic four than a steady back-up five, post-shrooms Alice fits as a rim protecting reserve who can give you 10 minutes, even while rocking dress flats. A 2019 Sixers team with such a reliable back-up may have beaten the Raptors in round two.

15. Los Angeles Clippers - Elastigirl

Elastigirl truly has no ego and is exactly the kind of hero who can easily slot in with an established team. She comes from a family of superheroes, so she is used to working together instead of going rogue. Elastigirl is willing to let others shine, which she does with Mr. Incredible, but she also has the capacity to take a leading role, like when she battles the Screenslaver. She has an acute understanding of how best to optimize the talents of others and bring our their peak performances, which Violet would surely attest to. A player who is comfortable sitting on the bench but always stays ready — after literally years of inaction, in one instance — is a crucial piece of a championship team.

16. Denver Nuggets- Mr. Incredible

Mr. Incredible may have some selfish tendencies at times, but he’s at his best when he’s working within a team concept. Nikola Jokic is the brains behind the operation while Jamal Murray is often the tip of the spear. Sometimes you need a hammer though, and that’s what Mr. Incredible provides the rotation: brute force power and athleticism.

17. Portland Trailblazers - Mufasa

Mufasa is clearly the most NBA-ready character in this draft class. We anticipate he’ll be able to lift teammates to new heights with his fantastic physique and off-the-charts leadership skills. Once he gets his footing, he’ll be a fantastic voice in the locker room. We suspect he dropped so low because he’s a bit shaky running the break and makes questionable decisions in traffic, but with help from the coaching staff, he should develop those skills as his career progresses. At the end of the day, we feel quite confident that we got the steal of the draft.

18. Memphis Grizzlies - Elsa

On the floor, Elsa ices out everything around her. She can be a lockdown defender, freezing ball handlers (literally) while creating opportunities in transition for a Grizzlies team that wants to run. As a help defender, she can assist players like Jonas Valanciunas who may struggle with stretch fives by not allowing those bigs to get to their spots on the pick and pop. She has ice in her veins and will not allow for any proverbial storm raging around the Grizzlies to impact them.

19. Philadelphia 76ers - Air Bud

he Philadelphia 76ers go a bit unconventional here selecting a dog who can not talk, does not have superpowers, and is not an animation, like the other players selected in this draft. However, Air Bud has one thing that I’ve yet to see from any other prospect: game film.

A golden retriever with two-way ability, Air Bud gives Philly a wing who can hound opposing ball-handlers on defense and provide some much needed energy on the offensive end. He also figures to serve as quite a fine complement to Ben Simmons in the transition game.

20. Boston Celtics - Yen Sid

Remember in the movie Fantasia? Mickey is a sorcerer’s apprentice and gets into all kinds of hijinks when he borrows the wizard’s magic hat? Yen Sid is the wizard. So why him and not some more popular figure? Well, like any good drafter I did my research.

There are few Disney characters out there with the magical powers of this wizard. In fact, based on a thorough internet search of about 5 minutes, I concluded that Yen Sid is right up there with the Genie and Maleficent as the most powerful characters in the Disney cannon.

21. Dallas Mavericks - Kronk

That’s right, Kronk, from the criminally underrated film, the Emperor’s New Groove.

Why Kronk you ask? Well, for one, the Mavericks could use some size. With Willie Cauley-Stein opting out of Orlando for personal reasons, Dallas has a thin front court. Though he should be considered an emergency option in Orlando, Dallas needs a banger, a guy who will play hard and do the dirty work and not need recognition and the spotlight.

22. Indiana Pacers - Trusty (Lady and the Tramp)

Though he may be getting up there in years and doesn’t boast superhuman strength like Hercules, the dead-eye shooting of Robin Hood, or Maui’s thicc frame, Trusty arguably best reflects the three —admittedly, somewhat corny — tenets of Indiana’s culture: toughness, togetherness, and...wait for it..trust. I mean, c’mon, it’s right there in his name.

Roy "Tunk" Dean Mabry Sr.

Roy Dean “Tunk” Mabry, Sr., 83, of Cowpens, SC, died Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born September 10, 1934, in Cowpens, he was the son of the late Albert and Edna Sally Spencer Mabry and husband of the late Joyce Dean Webb Mabry. Mr. Mabry was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church-Cowpens and retired from Pike Electric. Survivors include his children, Debbie Bledsoe of Cowpens, SC, Tracey Allison of Spartanburg, SC, Dean Mabry (Susan) of Cowpens, SC, and Mickey Mabry (Sheila) of Greenwood, SC; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis Mabry (Glenda) of Cowpens, SC; and sister, Helen Price of Laurens, SC. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Monday, December 18, 2017, in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery, 650 Battleground Rd., Cowpens, SC 29330, by The Rev. Steven Griffith.
