First look at Alarum
A new trailer has been released for Alarum, which is set to release January 17, 2025.
Sylvester Stallone, Scott Eastwood, Mike Colter, and Willa Fitzgerald star in this explosive action-thriller about two married spies caught in the crosshairs of an international intelligence network that will stop at nothing to obtain a critical asset. Joe (Eastwood) and Lara (Fitzgerald) are agents living off the grid whose quiet retreat at a winter resort is blown to shreds when members of the old guard suspect the two may have joined an elite team of rogue spies, known as ALARUM.

In 1976, after Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax, the most important person in roleplaying games was a Los Angeles woman named Lee Gold. She still contributes to the hobby and still runs a campaign using her Lands of Adventure (1983) game. ...
The shabby state of D&D’s original rules inspired much discussion, and Lee’s [fanzine] Alarums & Excursions served as the hub of this network. “All the role players I know, when we looked a Gary Gygax’s game with its “% liar” and all its typos said, ‘this stuff needs tinkering.’ ... Everybody tinkered with D&D because it needed tinkering to be playable. The nice part about D&D was that it obviously needed player help. ...
Soon though, Gary came to hate APAs like A&E. Partly, he seemed to see APAs as ringleaders for thieves, and not just the sort who—in Gary’s estimationstole a ride on his coattales. Remember that Lee Gold started with a photocopy of the D&D rules. Early on, copies of D&D, especially outside of TSR’s reach in the Midwest, proved scarce. The $10 price of the original box struck many gamers as outrageous. In the first issues of Alarums & Excursions, some contributors argued that TSR’s profiteering justified Xerox copies of the D&D rules. Gary wrote a rebuttal and Lee told readers that Gary deserved to gain from his work and investment. Surely though, he remained incensed. ...
Meanwhile, Lee published A&E and began writing games. Much of her work showed an interest in history and particularly Japan, where she lived 4 months during A&E’s first year. Land of the Rising Sun (1980) extended the Chivalry & Sorcery system to Japan. Her game Lands of Adventure (1983) aimed for roleplaying in historical settings. Her other credits include GURPS Japan (1988) and Vikings (1989) for Rolemaster. ...
Meanwhile, the men in gaming tended to suppose that only men contributed to the hobby. Lee remembers visiting the Origins convention and spotting shirts for sale that identified the wearer as a “wargaming widow.” Why else would a woman attend a gaming convention?
After Lee finished writing Land of the Rising Sun for Fantasy Games Unlimited, she met publisher Scott Bizar at a local convention to sign the contract. She recalls discussing the game’s credits.
“Do you want to say this game is written by yourself and your husband Barry?” Bizar asked.
“No,” I said. “Barry didn’t write any bit of it. He did the indexing, and I gave him full credit for that. I wrote all of the game. Just say the game is by Lee Gold.”
“Most female writers say they wrote a game with their husbands,” said Bizar.
“I don’t care what other people do,” I said. “Just say the game is by Lee Gold.” And so Land of the Rising Sun came out as written by Lee Gold.
Her one personal encounter with Gary Gygax revealed a similar bias. Early on, Lee sent copies of A&E to TSR. After a couple of months, she received a phone call, which she recounts.
“This is Gary Gygax,” said the voice, “and I’d like to speak to Lee Gold.”
“I’m Lee Gold,” I said. “I gather you got the copies of A&E I sent you.”
“You’re a woman!” he said.
“That’s right,” I said, and I told him how much we all loved playing D&D and how grateful we were to him for writing it.
“You’re a woman,” he said. “I wrote some bad things about women wargamers once.”
“You don’t need to feel embarrassed,” I said. “I haven’t read them.”
“You’re a woman,” he said.
We didn’t seem to be getting anywhere, so I told him goodbye and hung up.

The Bells
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)
I.
Hear the sledges with the bells—                  Silver bells! What a world of merriment their melody foretells!         How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle,            In the icy air of night!         While the stars that oversprinkle         All the heavens, seem to twinkle            With a crystalline delight;          Keeping time, time, time,          In a sort of Runic rhyme, To the tintinabulation that so musically wells        From the bells, bells, bells, bells,                Bells, bells, bells—   From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.
II.
Hear the mellow wedding bells,                  Golden bells! What a world of happiness their harmony foretells!         Through the balmy air of night         How they ring out their delight!            From the molten-golden notes,                And all in tune,            What a liquid ditty floats     To the turtle-dove that listens, while she gloats                On the moon!          Oh, from out the sounding cells, What a gush of euphony voluminously wells!                How it swells!                How it dwells            On the Future! how it tells            Of the rapture that impels          To the swinging and the ringing            Of the bells, bells, bells,          Of the bells, bells, bells, bells,                Bells, bells, bells—   To the rhyming and the chiming of the bells!
III.
Hear the loud alarum bells—                  Brazen bells! What tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!        In the startled ear of night        How they scream out their affright!          Too much horrified to speak,          They can only shriek, shriek,                   Out of tune, In a clamorous appealing to the mercy of the fire, In a mad expostulation with the deaf and frantic fire,             Leaping higher, higher, higher,             With a desperate desire,          And a resolute endeavor          Now—now to sit or never,        By the side of the pale-faced moon.             Oh, the bells, bells, bells!             What a tale their terror tells                   Of Despair!        How they clang, and clash, and roar!        What a horror they outpour On the bosom of the palpitating air!        Yet the ear it fully knows,             By the twanging,             And the clanging,          How the danger ebbs and flows;        Yet the ear distinctly tells,             In the jangling,             And the wrangling.        How the danger sinks and swells, By the sinking or the swelling in the anger of the bells—              Of the bells—      Of the bells, bells, bells, bells,             Bells, bells, bells—  In the clamor and the clangor of the bells!
IV.
Hear the tolling of the bells—                  Iron bells! What a world of solemn thought their monody compels!         In the silence of the night,         How we shiver with affright   At the melancholy menace of their tone!         For every sound that floats         From the rust within their throats                  Is a groan.         And the people—ah, the people—        They that dwell up in the steeple,                  All alone,         And who tolling, tolling, tolling,           In that muffled monotone,          Feel a glory in so rolling           On the human heart a stone—      They are neither man nor woman—      They are neither brute nor human—               They are Ghouls:         And their king it is who tolls;         And he rolls, rolls, rolls,                     Rolls              A pæan from the bells!           And his merry bosom swells              With the pæan of the bells!           And he dances, and he yells;           Keeping time, time, time,           In a sort of Runic rhyme,              To the pæan of the bells—                Of the bells:           Keeping time, time, time,           In a sort of Runic rhyme,             To the throbbing of the bells—           Of the bells, bells, bells—             To the sobbing of the bells;           Keeping time, time, time,             As he knells, knells, knells,           In a happy Runic rhyme,             To the rolling of the bells—           Of the bells, bells, bells—             To the tolling of the bells,       Of the bells, bells, bells, bells—               Bells, bells, bells—   To the moaning and the groaning of the bells.

Speak Your Mind Much?
Summa: {Y/N} and Denki let their intrusive thoughts loose and say what is on the top of their heads. Hitoshi pleasantly suffers.
Word Count: 553
Alarum: Fluffy smut through words, gazes, and small touches. Poly relationship, Shinkami, and {Y/N}. Minors skedaddle.
Tumblr media
{Y/N}’s fingers pressed at a slow pace on her keyboard, humming along to the tune Denki was creating on his guitar. A random thought sparked in her mind and brought her typing to a halt. Before she allows her intrusive thoughts to take the reins, she looks behind her to Hitoshi, watching him peacefully petting one of their rescue cats, Jelly Bean.
“Toshi?” She called over her shoulder in the direction of the kitchen. A low hum was Hitoshi’s response as he brought his mug to his lips.
“You know, I’ve always wanted to choke on your cock.” {Y/N} cracked a smile as she heard her boyfriend spit out his coffee in sync with the loud wrong note from Denki’s guitar. She remains still and starts typing once again, humming the previous notes that Denki had been playing, swaying her head side to side. Hitoshi clears his throat and sets his mug down on the counter.
“What…did you say?” Aside from Hitoshi, they both raised their brows at the sound of his slow and calm voice. Before {Y/N} could utter a word, Denki looks between them both.
“I love you both a fuck ton, but have you lost your heads?” His golden eyes flick to {Y/N}’s, gesturing to his chest and then to her with his plectrum. “We literally just did yesterday. I took a turn, you took a turn, we did it together. Should I mention the amount of drool?” As the blond spoke quickly, his hand movements did as well. “What do you mean you always wanted to?” He slumped against the frame of his guitar, his eyes squaring in on {Y/N} as Hitoshi approached her from behind. {Y/N} shrugged and weighed her head from side to side.
“I don't know, how do I put this simply?” {Y/N} overlaps her hands over the other in a bridge to hold her chin as she looks down at the bright screen before her. “Since we graduated, I’ve always wanted to explore and try things with you both. Now that I-that we all can, it's just—it’s nice. Even though it's cheesy and small, I'm glad we reached that stage in our relationship.” Denki's eyes soften and his bottom lip juts out in a musical coo.
“Aww, I almost thought you were going to say something lewd, like which position we should try next.” His mischievous grin spreads across his lips. “All that trainin’ with Sero has gotten me suuper flexible. But you know that already, right, Toshi Woshi~?” Denki adds with a wink, wiggling his brows.
Their all but silent boyfriend shoots Denki a look, but the blond doesn't flinch or look away—challenging him behind his low-lidded eyelashes. Hitoshi rests his hands on {Y/N}’s shoulders, shaking his head—his amused smirk was hardly visible to be counted as one.
“You two let your intrusive thoughts go free too much for your own good,” He chuckles, rubbing his thumb over the arch of {Y/N}’s shoulder.
“Hm, I think you handle us pretty well, Toshi Woshi~...” {Y/N} chirps, tilting her head backwards to look up at him with an upside down frown. She giggles as Hitoshi rolls his eyes and drops his gaze down, firm on hers.
“Don't tempt me to demonstrate, Kitten~...”

How would the RO's react to an MC who is scared of thunderstorms during one?
There aren't many rainstorms in the arid plains, but your arrival there happens to coincide with one during the prologue! Surely that's not significant or ominous at all...
However, MC isn't quite all in their right mind at the time (to say the least), so this trope does not appear; perhaps I should add a few choices for that? It may not be relevant enough, but I will consider!
ヾ( ˃ ᴗ ˂ )◞ • *✰
This is not canon, as always. I'll assume there is either a flowering romance or blossoming friendship with U and Z for this ask, because the response would be very different otherwise, at least for U!
𖤓 Z COMFORTS MC ☾
Z doesn't mind the thunderous clamour of the heavens in the slightest; after all, who wouldn't enjoy such a spectacle? MC, apparently...
They are quicker than U to notice, especially if MC is visibly tense or tearful. At first they might not understand: what is there to fear? But the way MC flinches at every flash of lightning would make the ever-present smile drop from their face.
Z and fear are old acquaintances, after all.
They would grab MC's hands or pull them close, and if met with resistance, they might bundle MC tightly in a blanket, ostensibly to calm them down, secretly to facilitate ease-of-hugging. This will be a difficult task if MC is unwilling or bigger than they are, but Z is also determined (and a very skilled fighter) so good luck wriggling away from them! If they are lucky, this attempt ends in success or laughter.
Regardless, Z is a bastion of radiant light that washes away the darkness, a bulwark against the storm, even if they happen to be smaller than MC.
If, however, Z is [REDACTED] at the time... the most they will be able to do is offer warm words to MC, and attempt to instill a sense of calm if they can.
Either way, Z would provide MC a spirited distraction from the Thing that has them so distraught, quickly becoming the most noticeable part of MC's world - whether enchanting or ridiculous, their display is sure to be captivating.
𖤓 U "COMFORTS" MC ☾
U is genuinely annoyed by the alarum of a thunderstorm; they don't appreciate loud sounds or bright lights. But their annoyance would quickly turn to surprise and skepticism when they notice MC's fright.
"It is only a storm," they might say, derisively. It is impossible to tell if their derision is directed at MC or the lightning itself.
When that fails to calm MC - because, really, what were they expecting? - U would quietly make one of three options available: their silent presence, a swift departure, or something to calm MC's nerves.
If U remains nearby, MC finds their tall, thin silhouette strangely sheltering, that chill aura settling over MC and bringing with it a sense of resiliency - as if the force of U's annoyance at the storm itself has overwhelmed the fear.
If MC agrees to be left alone, not wanting to bother U, they won't go far; they are listening outside the door, probably cursing themselves for being irrational, or MC for sending them away - ironically, even less rational!
If MC accepts their home-brewed remedy, U might take off their outer cloak and wrap it about MC's shoulders until it takes effect, and they don't leave MC's side until the storm has passed.
U's idea of "comfort" is more practical than empathetic, and a little begrudging at first. You can bet they would be closely observing MC's every tiny reaction, taking silent notes for the next time it is necessary to offer their mortal companion solace...
Or to manipulate them.
Thanks so much for your ask, Anon! I look forward to sharing the demo and am glad you'll be meeting the RO's in-game soon.
Z would be excited, if they knew!
U knows, and is extremely smug about it.
~ Effie
