âDon Knotts was legally blind," says Alan Hamel, husband of Suzanne Somers. "He had a woman with him at all times and she was called âThe Walker.â If Don had to move to the other side of the set, she would pace it off and say, âOkay, youâre taking nine steps before you deliver the line.â And he was brilliant at it. I donât remember one moment where it failed. So, he was able to do that...
"When Suzanneâs mother had macular degeneration and had only two percent vision, Suzanne went to Don and asked if he would speak with her. And he said of course he would. Suzanne's mother said, 'Don, Iâve only got two percent vision left.' Don told her, 'Anyone who has no vision at all would be thrilled to have two percent, Marion.' And after that she was okay with it.â

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken was one of my favorite spooky movies when I was a kid, and it's available on Internet Archive!
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is a spooky comedy starring Don Knotts as a cowardly small-town aspiring reporter, who gets roped into spending the night in a haunted house. It's been a long time since I've been able to watch it, I'm so glad I found a link!
#don knotts#the ghost and mr chicken#theres a really good scene with an organ that plays itself#and a painting that bleeds with like shears stuck in its throat#and a spiritualist society of old ladies who are very entertaining#and don knotts is great as always

Someone put the 1982 TV version of Wait Until Dark on YouTube.
If you like the 1967 Audrey Hepburn movie, this version makes an interesting contrast. Itâs literally a filmed stage production, complete with a live audience (their reaction to the âjumpâ is priceless, as is the creative way the director stages that scene). It also uses Knottâs original script without much in the way of dialogue alterations. Lalo Schifrin of Bullitt and Dirty Harry fame provided the soundtrack, which is very synth-y at times in true 1980s fashion.
Whatâs most striking about this TV version is how different the characterizations are from the 1967 film. Katharine Ross claimed to have never seen the Hepburn movie and she avoided doing so in order to make sure her performance as Susy would be totally her own. She plays the character as less emotionally vulnerable, a bit more stoic at points. On the other hand, Stacy Keach was an admirer of Alan Arkinâs icy cold performance as Roat and so went out of his way to make his performance as different as possible. He starts out jovial, then becomes more unhinged and manic as the story goes along.
Itâs an interesting curiosity, part of an HBO Theater block that ran in 1982, which consisted of filmed stage plays cast with big names. HBO Theater garnered some backlash for being more âstageâ than âTV,â especially since so many of the properties being adapted had already been successful movies. I canât find any of the other productions save for this 1982 Wait Until Dark, but if itâs representative, these must have been unflashy but competent across the board.
To be honest, I wish Warner Archive had put this version on their 2017 bluray release of the 1967 film-- it would have been a fun bonus feature.

Midnight in Paris (2011) directed by Woody Allen. #HARPERSMOVIECOLLECTION
2023
I watched The Shakiest Gun In The West (1968)
Yes it's old and ridiculous, but Indulge me on this one.
A comedy/western in which a new graduate of dental school heads out into the west only to end up in several dangerous situations.
I fucking love Don Knotts. My parents raised me on old black and white episodes of The Andy Griffith show and Deputy Barney Fife has always been super funny to me. Knotts plays that basic character here, with a little less false machismo. He's a bit fun, terrified, goofy and easily taken advantage of, but he has a heart of gold.
No, this isn't exactly an amazingly made film. It's a lot of open fields and back lot sets of western towns. Upbeat music and absolutely no real doom and gloom or palpable danger. In one word, it's just very silly.
I won't claim that all the jokes still work, or that Native Americans are featured in a very nice light. (Though, the racism is surprisingly tame for 1968.) The movie is pretty funny though. The small touches really make for the biggest laughs. It is as lighthearted as lighthearted can get.
Knotts is doing his act at top notch. He is clearly doing his best to put the work in to get the laugh. It's hard not to like him, no matter the character.
Director Alan Rafkin, does what he's supposed to by letting Knotts work, though I can't say I like his style of filmmaking. It's cheap and a bit ugly. It's 1960's t.v. directing and not much more than that. But, it works well enough for the purpose.
Knotts co-star Barbara Rhoades plays a somewhat progressive character for the era. A pants wearing female outlaw who's the real straight shot badass of the west. I liked her character. Shes gorgeous and the coolest character in the film. What's not to like?
This is an extremely easy going movie. It's a mostly sunny cool day thats perfect for a little stroll. You won't laugh out loud or anything, but you'll smirk a lot and I can't see anybody hating this outright. Not much else to say about it.
