How to Do Huntsville’s Rocket Science Scene Right: “The very first thing you have to do when you come to Huntsville is visit the U.S. Space & Rocket Center,” says Dawn. “The Space industry is what put Huntsville on the map, and USSRC shares that history.”
In the park surrounding the building, you can wander among 27 missiles and rockets. Inside, visit one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia on display anywhere in the world and enjoy the new Intuitive Planetarium, an 8K Digital Planetarium and Digital Dome Experience - the only one of its kind in the Southeast. Dawn’s family loves the simulators, especially the Space Shot. This simulates a rocket launch, moving 140 feet straight up into the air in just two and a half seconds. “You get a great view of the entire area—if you can keep your eyes open,” says Dawn.

Space Camp is another big draw for visitors to Huntsville. However, according to Dawn, not many people know that Space Camp for families is an option. That means all of you can shack up in the Camp’s famous pod-like habitats, just like what you would live in on Mars. During camp, you and your family will launch on a simulated mission to the International Space Station, train like astronauts, and build your own rocket. There’s also the opportunity to have lunch with a real astronaut (pro tip: Dawn recommends indulging in the astronaut ice cream).

How to Make the Most of Huntsville’s Music and Arts Scene: When you’ve had your fill of space and rocket science, Dawn recommends visiting her favorite hidden gem in Huntsville to listen and let loose with some live music, Tangled String Studios (2211 Seminole Drive). This acoustic guitar and mandolin shop is run by a former NASA engineer. If you’re lucky enough to be in town during one of the studio’s concerts, don’t miss it. “Because the shop makes instruments for some of the most well-known performing artists in Nashville, they are able to bring in a rotating lineup of world-class talent to play intimate shows in the Live Room,” says Dawn. The Live Room only seats about 100 people, so the experience is up close and personal, and the acoustics are fantastic. Make sure to bring your own wine and snacks to round out the evening.
Incidentally, Dawn’s favorite local snack can be found just two doors down from Tangled String Studios, at Pizzelle’s Confections (2211 Seminole Drive, #4A). Owned by two sisters, this shop sells handmade artisan chocolates and truffles (Dawn’s favorite truffle is “nutty by nature”), homemade candy bars, and custom cakes. For the perfect accompaniment to your truffles, pick up a bottle of red wine at Church Street Wine Shop (501 Church Street). While you’re there, Dawn recommends ordering some tapas and enjoying a wine tasting. If you prefer tea to wine, pop into local favorite Piper and Leaf Artisan Tea Co. (2211 Seminole Drive Southwest) for a soothing cup of tea after a show—they’re open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

When Dawn has out-of-town visitors, she always takes them to Lowe Mill (2211 Seminole Drive), the largest privately owned art space in the country. Housed in a 171,1000 square-foot former mill that a private investor purchased and transformed into studios for local artists, Lowe Mill is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday. On those days, visitors can walk (download our walking tour here) through the 250 studio spaces, chat with artists and makers, and purchase art and wares. “They have everything from stained glass art to cigar box guitars, plus a few little food spots and live music on the dock on Friday nights in the spring and fall,” says Dawn. “It’s really a treasure.” Be sure to visit Vertical House Records while you’re there, one of Dawn’s favorites. Where to Dine: For breakfast, you won’t regret driving a few minutes outside of town to get a cinnamon roll at Hamley Bake Shoppe (12023 Highway 231 431 North, Meridianville, Alabama). “Order a pan in advance—it’s the perfect local gift for a hostess,” says Dawn. Dawn recommends treating yourself to a traditional Southern lunch at Lyn’s Gracious Goodness (2306 Whitesburg Drive). This mother-daughter-run lunch spot and catering company has a must-try chicken salad, delicious deviled eggs, and mint sweet tea worth splurging on. “Lyn and her daughter LeeLee are the perfect Southern ladies,” says Dawn. “If you pop in, be sure to tell them I say hey!” Like LeeLee’s food? Check out her very own signature strawberry and make it yourself!

For a casual, intimate lunch or dinner experience, Dawn recommends Domaine South (103 North Side Square) where the motto is “life should be delicious.” Come as you are and expect fantastic wine and chef prepared sandwiches, entrees, charcuterie boards and desserts. Dawn recommends that you call for a reservation.

Church Street Purveyor (201 Jefferson Street North) is the place to go for a drink and stay for supper. Every detail at this place sets the ambience, from a cocktail menu presented in a vintage book to the stained glass windows. Dawn recommends the tuna tacos (order them in lettuce wraps for a healthier option, she says), drunken guacamole, and the “Rosie the Riveter” seasonal cocktail, made with sparkling wine.

Where to Shop: After all that space and art exploration, a little retail therapy is in order. Dawn recommends a stroll along Clinton Avenue in downtown Huntsville for some browsing. Where to Stay: The Westin Huntsville (6800 Governors West Northwest) is located very close to the Space & Rocket Center at the Bridge Street Town Centre, an open-air mall with restaurants, major retailers, and a carousel. The AC Hotel Downtown (435 Williams Ave SW) is adjacent to Big Spring International Park (200 Church Street) and many of the shops and restaurants Dawn recommends. And while it’ll be a while before they are open, Dawn is already looking forward to the Curio hotel, which will be located in an historic building in downtown Huntsville soon—another reason to come back for a visit!

In the ‘00s, it was the celebrities with brand deals that could boost a fashion label’s sales. In 2010s, came the influencers, with highly-curated Instagram feeds that could skyrocket an emerging name to cult fame with a single #ad post. Now, it’s TikTok that has the ability to make a label go viral in an instant. But, thanks to its algorithm that prioritises discovery rather than clout, anyone — following or not — can help clear a brand’s inventory.
Perhaps, the biggest proof of TikTok’s sales power came this month, when University of Alabama sorority hopefuls flooded the app with #BamaRush videos, which have since generated over 330 million views. While documenting their sorority recruitment process, and the outfits they are wearing in the process, young women became walking billboards, listing brand names like Kendra Scott, Steve Madden, Michael Kors, Princess Polly, Golden Goose, and Pandora — for free. With such fanfare, it took no time for fashion brands to notice the effect.

Overnight, jewellery brand Kendra Scott’s website saw an increase in traffic, particularly from women in the 18 to 24 age range. “TikTok is an incredible platform because it’s powered by what users want to see and provides a great understanding of what is resonating with consumers by being real and relatable,” says Mindy Perry, the chief marketing officer at Kendra Scott. “We jumped on the opportunity to engage with our customers, exactly where they were, on what mattered most to them — #BamaRush.” By the next day, the brand’s social media team posted a “Choose Your #BamaRush Jewelry Look” video on TikTok, playing into the #ootd trend, and, later that week, Scott herself replied to sorority hopefuls in a video, saying: “I am absolutely obsessed with all your incredible looks.”
While Scott is an established brand, sold at some of the biggest retailers across the US the Pants Store (which, as you may already know from the viral videos, doesn’t only sell pants) found itself at the centre of viral attention for the first time. Launched in the 1950s, the Alabama-based line of boutiques sells apparel targeted at various college and holiday activities, like sorority rush week. For years, according to owner Michael Gee, the store has supplied students at the University of Alabama with clothing and sorority-approved attire. By the time #BamaRush hit the TikTokverse, the sorority-ready clothes were already sold out. Regardless, over the past week, the brand’s sales across its five boutiques and the online store surged by 400%, according to Gee.
With an estimated 689 million users, TikTok’s power to sell products was palpable even prior to this phenomenon. The hashtag #haul has garnered over 10 billion views, while #tiktokmademebuyit has amassed more than 4.6 billion views, according to TikTok. Its algorithm is built for users to discover things they are most interested in, instead of feeding them content from people they already follow. Consequently, users can much more easily get their eyes on brands outside of their bubble, which, according to a TikTok spokesperson, is a “huge advantage in driving purchases.”
It also makes it impossible to guess which brand will go viral next, with independent brands like House of Sunny and With Jéan seeing record numbers, alongside mass companies like Zara and Aritzia. 
Take, for instance, Lirika Matoshi’s strawberry dress. After model Tess Holliday wore it on the red carpet at the 2020 Grammy Awards (top photo), the flouncy style made its way onto the platform and went viral. The hashtag #strawberrydress generated over 125.4 million views; the unpacking video by TikTok creator Avery Mayeur has over 1.1 million likes. The same thing happened to With Jéan’s Alexa dress. After creators like Moe Black shared their reviews of the terry cloth frock on TikTok, the Australia-based brand, founded in 2017, saw shoppers flooding the website to get their hands on the $239 (£175) style. According to With Jéan’s co-founder Sami Lorking-Tanner, the platform helped the brand grow 68% year over year. The Alexa dress has since sold out and restocked several times. The Skims Lounge Slip Dress has similarly repeatedly sold out, growing over 110 million views on the app and a waitlist of over 40,000 people. 
The app also helped throwback brands, like Gap and Abercrombie, do the impossible: reach Gen Z. Gap’s brown hoodie went viral earlier this year, after creator Barbara Kristofferson posted a video wearing the logo style, with the post reaching over 6.7 million views. Although the hoodie was not on sale, the demand inspired the brand to partner with TikTok to create the Gap Hoodie Color Comeback, in which users got to choose the colour for its upcoming release. While the style still hasn’t hit stores, Gap’s sales increased — coincidentally or not —  by 29% as of May.

As for brands already popular with Gen Z, like Aerie? It only took one viral video with over 871,000 likes to overwhelm the brand’s supply of its crossover leggings. In November 2020, creator Hannah Schlenker, who now boasts over 880,000 followers, posted a video wearing the leggings. Since then, Aerie’s website reported an increase of 700,000 searches for the leggings, as well as a surge of 200,000% in Google searches, according to a report from Insider.
While the numbers provide every reason for brands to invest in TikTok, it’s impossible to predict where the next viral it-piece will come from. And for small, indie brands, who may not have the dollars for advertising like bigger brands, this evens out the chances of blowing up overnight.

28 Days of Black Fashion: Ann Lowe

Named by the Saturday Evening Post as “Society’s Best-Kept Secret” in 1964, Ann Cole Lowe can definitely be described as one of fashion’s Hidden Figures. But in recent years, she is finally getting the recognition she should have received during the 1940′s, 50′s and 60′s as she became the first black couturier to open a shop on Madison Avenue, made dresses for some of the most elite women in New York and Florida, and was commissioned by the Auchincloss family to dress a young socialite, Jacqueline Bouvier, for her nuptials to then Massachusetts Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Ann Lowe was truly a pioneer. Born in Clayton, Alabama in 1898, Ann learned to sew from her grandmother, a freed slave, and her mother who made dresses for Southern socialites. When her mother suddenly passed away before finishing some ball gowns commissioned by the First Lady of Alabama, 16-year-old Anne finished the dresses, launching her career as a couture dressmaker.

Ann continued to pursue her passion for couture, enrolling in S.T. Taylor School of Design in New York City. When she arrived, the school tried to turn her away once they realized they’d admitted a Black woman. Though she continued to face discrimination and segregation while pursuing her studies (she was forced to work separately, her white classmates refusing to sit in the same room with her), she continued to move forward and graduated early.

Ann spent several years in Florida making dresses for the elite. Ann would often dress women for events that, because of segregation, she would have never been allowed to attend. One such Florida event was the annual Gasparilla festival, an exclusive, segregated formal ball where the main event is a coronation of a King and Queen and their court. Ann would often provide the gowns for the entire court as well as many of the women who attended. Interestingly, despite the discrimination in Florida, Lowe speaks of that time in Tampa as ��some of the happiest years in [her] life.”

Ann left Florida and returned to New York City. Despite the steady following from members of the New York elite and her gowns appearing in publications like Vogue and Vanity Fair, her first shop closed for financial reasons. After working as an in-house seamstress at department stores & boutiques including the prestigious Adam Room at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Chez Sonia, she was able to re-open her shop on Madison Avenue.

Olivia de Havilland accepted the 1947 Academy Award for Best Actress in one of Lowe’s gowns. Though Lowe designed and sewed the gown, her name was not on the label. Instead, the label read Sonia Rosenberg (Chez Sonia).
Ann’s work earned her Couturier of the Year in 1961 and a listing in the National Society Directory and the Who’s Who in American Women list. She was known for her trapunto work, meticulous needle work and beautiful finishing details, both inside and outside of the garment. She truly loved couture design and dressmaking. In an Oakland Tribune interview, she said, “I feel so happy when I am making clothes …” And in a 1965 appearance on the Mike Douglas Show, she explained that her driving force was not fame or fortune but her desire “to prove that a Negro can become a major dress designer.” She most definitely succeeded.

Jackie Kennedy in the iconic wedding gown created by Ann Lowe in the the December, 1966 issue of Ebony Magazine. It is now part of the permanent collection at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.
Did you know that 10 days before the Kennedy wedding, a pipe burst in Lowe’s studio, destroying 10 of the 15 dresses she’d created, including the bride’s dress which had taken 2 months and fifty feet of silk taffeta to make.
