Impacto do Ataque

https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/explosion-goes-off-beach-somali-capital-prime-minister-says-2024-08-02/
MOGADISHU, Aug 3 (Reuters) - At least 32 civilians were killed and 63 injured in an explosion on a popular beach in the Somali capital Mogadishu late on Friday evening, police said, an attack blamed by Somali state media on the militant Islamist group al Shabaab.
It was the deadliest attack in the Horn of Africa country since twin car bombs detonated near a busy market intersection in October 2022, killing at least 100 people and wounding 300 others.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility by the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab, which has claimed similar attacks in the past, including the car bomb attack in 2022.
Police spokesperson Abdifatah Aden gave the death toll in Friday evening's explosion at a beach restaurant.
In addition to the civilians killed, Aden said that one of the attackers had blown himself up while three others had been killed by security forces. One attacker was captured alive while one soldier was killed during the assault.
State news agency SONNA had earlier said five al Shabaab attackers had been killed by security forces while a sixth had blown himself up during the assault.
Hassan Farah, a survivor, described the shock as the explosion shattered a peaceful evening.
"I was in the restaurant sipping coffee and having a good chat with friends when I saw a big man running, in a second there was something like lightening and a huge blast," he told Reuters.
"We were covered with smoke. Inside and outside the restaurant many people were lying on the floor while others were bleeding and crying."
Videos posted on X showed bodies lying on the beach in the dark, and people running to safety.
Al Shabaab controlled a vast area of Somalia before being pushed back in government counteroffensives since 2022. However, the militants remain capable of launching significant attacks on government, commercial, and military targets.
"The fact that the terrorist attack coincides with this night when the beach is the most congested shows the hostility of the terrorists to the Somali people," former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said on his X account.

This is the answer to why the news every so often notes US drone strikes in Somalia, incidentally:
If people really gave a shit as to why the US does periodic drone strikes into Somalia they could easily find it, but they don't because that would require treating African events as things that matter for themselves. And to most of today's TikTok radicals they would sooner die than admit that their obsession with Palestine instead of UHC or free college is just a trend, and that there is, in fact, no actual concern with the events of this part of the world Al-Shabaab itself is the last trace of the decades of anarchy in Somalia, the local Al-Qaeda spinoff....and those US drone strikes are used to help a reviving state with a still-fragile army do what the state itself cannot, entirely, on its own and is perfectly willing to ask the US taxpayer and US missiles to do for it so it doesn't have to try.

On January 15, 2019, lone SAS operator Christian Craighead enters the Dusit Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, in respond to a terrorist attack. This famous photograph was seen on social media and major news outlets around the world.
Off-duty at the time, Craighead wore his combat gear over jeans and shirt when he entered the complex alone. He was able escort civilians to safety, then went back inside the hotel where he shot and killed two of the four al-Shabaab gunmen.

MOGADISHU, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Four people, including three Somali security officers, were killed in heavy fighting between al-Shabaab militants and regional forces after militants captured a military base in southern Somalia.
Al-Shabaab fighters took over the Gariley military base in Jubaland State, which was recently handed over by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) as part of the drawdown of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troops.
Ibrahim Guled Aden, governor of El Wak District in the southern region of Gedo, confirmed that several people were injured in the fighting that finally led to the fall of the base into al-Shabaab control.
"Al-Shabaab fighters attacked our forces at Geriley base and captured it. They are in full control after defeating our forces who were in a small number, but we are working on plans to retake control of the base," Aden said.
The Geriley military base, which is located about 12 kilometers from the border with Kenya, was handed over to the Somali security forces on June 29.
Last week, Mohamud Sayid Aden, deputy president of Jubaland State, expressed concern over the ATMIS drawdown in the region, describing it as a hurried plan.
ATMIS withdrew 2,000 troops by June 30, and another 3,000 is expected to be withdrawn in September in compliance with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2628 and 2670, which mandates ATMIS to also hand over security responsibilities in agreed areas to Somali security forces.

In April of 2024, Luai Ahmed asked an interesting question on Twitter.

You protested and turned the world upside down when 30,000+ Palestinians died in the past 7 months. But remained completely silent when:
400,000 Yemenis were killed
500,000+ Sudanese were killed
500,000+ Somalis were killed
5,400,000+ Congolese were killed
etc.
Why?
If this question was put to #jumblr, I'd expect to see a large number of people saying things like "No Jews, no news," and I suspect that's the point Ahmed was hoping to make.
As an exercise in intellectual honesty, I'd like to take this question at face value (AuDHD here) and attempt to answer it.
For the purposes of this post, I'm going to assume Ahmed was asking this question of US campus protesters advocating for BDS policies towards Israel:
To the extent the US is involved in the wars listed in Ahmed's post, the US is, from the majority perspective, aligned with the "good guys."
The only thing the US could really withdraw from Yemen, Somalia, Congo, and Sudan is humanitarian aid and limited protection from religious extremists. Other than isolationists and nationalists, very few Americans support withdrawing aid to refugees in those countries.
For example, the US is not aligned with the armed Houthi aggressors in the Yemeni civil war and does not financially support them. Their slogan is:
God is the Greatest
Death to America
Death to Israel
A Curse Upon the Jews
Victory to Islam
The US is the largest contributor of humanitarian aid in Yemen. There is little, if any, university involvement in the conflict in Yemen. Any increased support for the Saudi Arabia-backed Yemeni government is fraught.
The US is aligned with AMISOM and the UN in Somalia to provide humanitarian aid to civilians and refugees with over a billion dollars aimed at flood, drought, and famine relief. The US has also made many targeted air strikes against groups like of al-Shabaab, Islamic State and the remnants of Al Qaeda. (Unfortunately, these airstrikes have reportedly resulted in at least 21 non-combatant civilian deaths and 11 injuries.)
The US is the largest source of humanitarian aid in Sudan and funds 80% of the World Food Program. It supports neither side in the war and has undertaken specific measures to promote accountability for the actions committed by the two forces, including imposing visa restrictions and levying economic sanctions against leadership. There is nothing which divestment would accomplish other than hastening starvation and depriving people of shelter and medical aid.
In Congo…that’s a mind-boggling catastrophic miscarriage of colonialism and the Cold War the dimensions of which no one can distill into a slogan or policy position. There is probably nothing and no faction in the Congolese war that protests in the US directed at universities or government entities could effectively support or pressure. What would student protestors be calling for the US to do?
So it makes sense to me why US activists would get involved the conflict between Israel and Hamas, but not these other conflicts.
I appreciate Ahmed's determination to fight antisemitism, but I don't think he's making a particularly good point here.
I object to protestors using falsehoods, disinformation, ignorance, Jewish cosplay, or antisemitic tropes in their protesting - but I don't think their protests are fundamentally illegitimate. They might be wrong, they might be foolish, but not in the way Ahmed seems to suggest.
