Speaking of mobility in zoos, the Fort Worth zoo was kind of notorious for having a steep hill leading up to its big cat exhibit that was very difficult for anyone in a regular wheelchair to ascend. I think they've done something with it in the new renovation but I haven't been to check yet. Have you heard anything about it?

I remember that hill! I think I just saw a post that the new renovation of that area is opening in like… a week? I’m hoping to use the cyborg mask y’all helped fund to go to a meeting there in October so I’ll report back.

It’s interesting, because long hills can be reasonably accessible if they’re graded correctly and have places to stop and stand that are flat, and places to sit. I barely noticed the slope at the zoo in Akron because of good design like that, but Omaha’s are always such a slog and there’s no benches anywhere.

in 1991, nasa launched about 2,500 moon jelly polyps into space. they wanted to see how developing in zero-gravity would affect jellyfish behaviour back on earth. by the end of the mission, there were about 60,000 jellyfish orbiting earth - they'd gotten BUSY up there.

essentially, the way humans tell which way is up and which is down is a bunch of tiny crystals on a bunch of tiny hairs in our ears. the crystals roll around and move the hair cells, which signals directions to our brain. jellyfish have similar crystal-hairs around their bells (the umbrella-looking bit), so knowing how jellyfish responded to 0G development would help us figure out how humans would do in a similar scenario!

results found that, once returned to earth, the moon jellies had trouble getting around. they had vertigo and couldn't tell up from down, and sort of looked drunk, if moon jellies could get drunk. doesn't bode too well for us, i think.

You took them to Columbus and they liked it, especially when you took them to the zoo

They’ve never seen so many corn fields in their life and they never wish to see them again

You also took them to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland one time, they all liked that

If you asked them to stay they’d stay but only because it’s you, otherwise they probably wouldn’t even have considered it

Sorry for sounding like a snob the phrase “Ohio State Zoo” is just very funny to me because there are four excellent zoos in Ohio—Toledo, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland—and the Akron Zoo is very small but I’ve heard good things. There’s also an excellent safari park called The Wilds that does a lot of rehab and has rescued animals from bad living conditions.
