50 years of the first flight of the "immortal" F-5E Tiger II

50 years ago, Northrop's test pilot Henry "Hank" Chouteau aired the F-5E Tiger II for the first time (August 11, 1972). A total of 1,411 of these simply "immortal" jets were built before the end of production in 1987.

The Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter / Tiger / Tiger II series was designed from the ground up as a low-cost, lightweight and multifunctional combat platform with Mach 1 speed capability. Although developed in the United States by the company Northrop, the fighter found quantitative success outside the country, with more than half of the 2,246 aircraft in all completed versions serving in foreign armed forces around the world.

In all, at least 30 U.S. allied nations have operated the F-5 in its various versions with many in service to date. Despite not having the true "all-weather" capabilities of the most talented fighters of its time, the F-5 compensated for its inherent limitations through its excellent agility, ease of maintenance and low-cost functionality - all the benefits for military buyers with a limited budget.

The Northrop F-5E "Tiger II"

In 1970, the United States was looking for a replacement for the export-oriented F-5A to keep up with the progress of Soviet fighter developments and the requirements set to suit the new "International Fighter Aircraft (IFA" program. The goal behind the program was to put on the field an air-to-air fighter capable of competing against the ubiquitous Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 series "Fishbed" that is being launched en masse to Warsaw Pact nations and interested Soviet allies.

Northrop threw its hat in the ring once again and developed a variation of the F-5A single-seater to become the new "F-5A-21" model. Northrop was awarded the defense contract for the new fighter and the design has evolved to become the definitive production variant "F-5E".

The F-5E model has retained many of the qualities that made the previous F-5A a global market success. Special attention was paid to improving performance when installing a pair of General Electric J85-21/21A series engines, each rated to 5,000 pounds of thrust each. The service ceiling was slightly increased to 51,800 feet and the range was improved to 1,543 miles. The fuselage has therefore been expanded and elongated to accommodate the new engines, as well as extra reserves of internal fuel to help increase operational range.

The avionics have been updated with the Emerson Electric AN/APQ-153 series radar and several other customer-requisite systems can be installed as needed - in order to make the F-5E a kind of modular platform. The maneuverability was improved by adding attack edge extensions along the wings, which produced a larger wing surface area as a result. The M39 double guns were kept, but upgraded to the M39A2 series and the artillery load was increased to 7,000 pounds. The first flight of the F-5E variant took place on August 11, 1972 and the type was formally designated as the F-5E "Tiger II".

As in the development of the F-5A before it, the F-5E was also branched into a two-seater version designated as "F-5F". With the addition of the second cockpit (from the instructor), one of the internal cannons of the M39A2 was excluded and the nose was elongated. The Emerson Electric AN/APQ-157 radar (based on the above-mentioned AN/APQ-153 series) was a standard accessory. Later versions were offered with the updated Emerson Electric AN/APG-69 series radar system, but this modernization has proven to be a prohibitive cost to all customers except USAF. Like the previous F-5A, the F-5E was also developed in the RF-5E "Tigereye" single-seat photographic recognition variant.

The USAF received its first F-5E models with the 425th Tactical Fighter Squadron, although they were mainly foreign parties who were interested in the acquisition of the Tiger II with about 20 air forces around the world that began to put the type into operation. The 425th TFS used its new F-5Es to train foreign forces.

In all, 792 F-5E models were produced by Northrop's facilities. Northrop has also added the manufacture of 140 F-5F two-seater combat trainers and 12 more RF-5E Tigereyes. Taiwan produced the F-5E/F-5F in quantity, totaling about 308 aircraft delivered. Switzerland also carried out the local license production of these new versions and produced 91 F-5E and F-5F models. South Korea has added 68 local copies.

The F-5E served with the USAF from 1975 to 1990 as part of the 26th, 64th, 65th and 627th aggressor squadrons in the U.S. The F-5E was also notably used by the United States Navy as an aggressor training aircraft for its "Top Gun" pilot school in Miramar, California. The USMC bought some former USAF F-5 models in 1989 to replace its F-21 aggressors (Israeli Kfir).

The FAB received 4 F-5F jets (FAB 4806 to 4809) and 58 F-5E fighters (FAB 4820 to 4877) that were purchased in two different batches. The first batch in 1973, direct from the factory (36 F-5E + 6 F-5B), worth US$ 115 million and the second lot, in 1988, former USAF (04 F-5F and 22 F-5E), at a total cost of US$ 13.1 million.

The first aircraft of "Operation Tigre", as the transfer of the first batch became known, were delivered from February 28, 1975 in Palmdale. There were 3 F-5B, which arrived in Brazil on March 6 of the same year, followed by 3 other F-5B on May 13. On June 12, 1975, the first 4 F-5E arrived at BAGL, starting an air bridge that would only end on February 12 of the following year, totaling 36 aircraft. In 1985, after much searching, an agreement was reached with the Reagan administration, which agreed to negotiate 4 F-5F and 22 F-5E, which would leave the ranks of the USAF, at a cost of 13.1 million dollars.

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) completed in 2013 the modernization of its 46 F-5E/F aircraft, which have passed to the F-5E/FM standard. The aircraft' engine and cell remained the same, but their avionics (HUD, radar and control panel) have been greatly modified.

In addition to its operational forms mentioned above, the structure of the Northrop F-5 served as the basis for projects such as the YF-17 technology demonstrator (competing unsuccessfully against what would become the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon) and the F/A-18 Hornet - the prominent U.S. Navy aircraft carrier-based multifunctional fighter that replaced the venerable Grumman F-14 Tomcats in service.

NASA employed a single F-5E fuselage with a revised and deeper fuselage for experimentation in DARPA's "Shaped Sonic Boom Demonstration" program. The fuselage survived the tests and became a permanent accessory at the Valiant Air Command Museum in Florida.

Despite its introduction in 1962, the F-5 series still maintains an operational status around the world.

King Jerry Ltd

BACKGROUND

King Jerry is an Indian full-service airline, based in Delhi, with its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The carrier commenced operations on 15 June, 2014 with its inaugural flight between Delhi and Kolkata. The airline had carried more than three million passengers by June 2016 and as of Sep 2019, has a 6.2% share of the domestic carriers. The airline serves 60 airports in India (20- International, 40- Domestic) with a fleet of 30 Boeing 737 and 22 Airbus A320 Aircrafts, operated on profitable routes with higher passenger load factors. It operates 560 flights/day.

 HISTORY

Initially being a low-cost carrier, King Jerry offered only economy class seating. To keep fares low, it did not provide complimentary meals on any of its flights, though it provided a buy-on board in-flight meal program. No in-flight entertainment was available initially. It offered services, such as a pre-assigned seat, multiple cancellations and priority check-in, to its passengers who are willing to pay a higher fare. In September 2015, the company announced its tie up with SonyLIV on demand video app for providing its fliers with entertainment options at the airport and in flight.

 FUTURE PROSPECT

The airline will be introducing its first international destination, Colombo, with flights connecting to Chennai. Company will be introducing operations in total of 5 international destinations with 12 short- haul flights. London will be the airline's first long-haul destination and will be launched after successful operation of short-haul international flight.

The airline will be expanding its fleet with 4 Boeing 787 Dream liner aircraft to operate on international routes.

In November 2018, it entered into talks with an Indian airline over a possible merger which ended in a no deal. But later contradicting its statement in 2019, it bagged the fifth largest carrier in the country with an 7.9% market share following the announcement about expansion. 1.     A passenger misbehaved with a female flight attendant. And according to the practice, she conveyed the incident to the cockpit and reported to the chief flight attendant. As the flight had already taken-off, the chief decided this to be the first thing to be looked in as they land and for now, they had the passenger flex-cuffed as directed by other pit members. But when this was reported to King Jerry, the company didn't take any actions against the passenger and instead fired the flight attendant after a heated argument. Owing to this, 5% of the female flight attendants resigned and other employees went on strike because of this irresponsibility on part of the company and not following the air rage rules.

2.     One of the competitor airlines, Jet airways, is facing a shutdown. And because of this shutdown, a large pool of talented employees is available to King Jerry .These people are in search of job opportunities and are applying at various vacant positions.

3.     King Jerry had a technological redesign and now owns various upgrades. One of the upgrades is replacement of traditional baggage system with latest Baggage Handling Mechanism. It has led to tremendous decrease in the requirement of ground staff. Hence the company is planning to transfer few of the excess employees for the new international routes and fire the rest.

·       Post- Installation; 1 employee will be laid off for every 5 employees on International Airports whereas, 3 employees will be laid off for every 10 employees at Domestic Airports. Transferring will lead to 4.5% increase in accommodation cost and 9% increase in training cost.

4.     Budget 2020 has proposed a monetary limit on the tax-exempt contribution from the employer to NPS account. According to the proposal, employer's contribution to EPF and NPS exceeding more than Rs 7.5 lakh in a financial year will be taxable in the hands of the employee.

She worked as a baggage handler a few times when needed but has not done some of the other jobs she would be supervising. The out- going station manager has stated, " I think, in time, she could learn how to be a good station manager. She will make some mistakes, but everybody does. The company should send a strong message to employees that promotion from within is one of our policy.
