James Allan Mollison was born on April 19th 1905 in Glasgow.
Graeme Obree, Chris Hoy and a certain steam train have all bee called The Flying Scotsman in their time, but the original title goes to a man who actually did fly, Jim Mollison.
Jim would go on to become a pioneering aviator, breaking records for long distance flights. His marriage to fellow aviator Amy Johnson also saw them lauded as the golden couple during their time together.
Born the only child of Hector Alexander Mollison, a consultant engineer, and Thomasina Macnee Addie. He was educated at The Glasgow Academy and Edinburgh Academy and took an early interest in flying and obtaining his Royal Air Force (RAF) Short Service Commission at 18, he was the youngest officer in the service, and upon completion of training was posted to India, flying on active service in Waziristan.
At the age of 22, Mollison became a flying instructor at Central Flying School (CFS), again setting the record for being the youngest in this role. Shortly after, he transferred to the RAF Reserve and devoted his time to civil aviation. In 1928-29, he served as an instructor with the South Australian Aero Club in Adelaide, leaving that position to become a pilot with Eyre Peninsular Airways and Australian National Airways.
In July-August 1931, Mollison set a record time of eight days, 19 hours for a flight from Australia to England, and in March 1932, a record for flying from England to South Africa in 4 days, 17 hours flying a de Havilland Puss Moth.
Mollison eventually served in the ATA Air Transport Auxiliary in the Second World War. In June 1941 Mollison and an ATA crew delivered Cunliffe-Owen OA-1 G-AFMB to Fort Lamy, Chad. The aircraft was fitted out as a personal transport for General De Gaulle.
Mollison was feted in London and New York, and could lead the life he had always wanted. “I am a night bird,” he once said. “Life and enjoyment begin when daylight fades. Cocktail bars and clubs, music, beautiful women— that’s living. Daylight comes to me as an interval for sleeping until an afternoon drink helps to bring on another evening.” His autobiography was called “Playboy of the Air”.
When Mollison and Amy Jonson married in 1932 the press were delighted, they were dubbed The Flying Sweethearts by the press and public. . The match was was perfect for the publicity machine, and the two of them set about devising new aviation records: in 1933 they flew together from Wales to New York and had a ticker-tape reception in Wall Street. But marriage did not last long or end well. It has sometimes been assumed that the match was a simple career move on Mollison's part: certainly he did not halt his relationships with other women. Nor did it limit his drinking. As I said earlier, he got the tag “ the Flying Scotsman” but those close to him called him “Brandy Jim”.
As well as his Playboy lifestyle and heavy drinking Jim Mollison was also quick with his fists, and a manager from the Grosvenor House Hotel was reported as saying ” We've had the most awful night here. Jim Mollison and Amy Johnson had a fearful row and he's beaten her up. The bathroom looks like a slaughterhouse.” The marriage officially ended in 1938.
Mollison kept flying, and – like Johnson – flew in a non-combat role in WWII. Both of them flew in the Air Transport Auxiliary. Johnson died in 1941 after baling out of aircraft. Mollison had at least one close escape, when his plane was shot up, but survived the war.
Mollison later settled in London and ran a public house. He married Maria Clasina E. Kamphuis in 1949 at the Maidenhead Register Office. Mollison continued to abused alcohol and in 1953, the Civil Aviation Authority Medical Board revoked his pilot's licence. The couple separated but Maria bought the Carisbrooke Hotel in Surbiton for him – a temperance hotel.
Suffering from acute alcoholism, he was admitted to The Priory, Roehampton, southwest London, where he died on 30 October 1959, the official cause of death was pneumonia, but unofficially it was thought to be alcoholic epilepsy.

"Building the Future: How 15-Minute Cities Can Transform India’s Urban Landscape"
India is fast emerging as a new land of opportunity, with many suggesting that the 21st century will witness a shift in the global order, placing India at the forefront. The government’s focus on infrastructure is a testament to this, as seen in the capital investment outlay of ₹11,11,111 crore in the 2024-25 budget—an impressive 11.1% increase from the previous year, making up 3.4% of the GDP. This substantial boost reflects the nation’s commitment to building a stronger, more resilient future.
However, it’s hard to ignore the strain on our cities, which feel like they are bursting at the seams, inching closer to an infrastructural tipping point. Many of these cities, built during colonial times, lack the fundamental urban planning or modern mapping needed for today’s demands. While there is no magical solution to these deeply rooted issues, and India—being a land of unique needs and adaptations—will never find a one-size-fits-all answer, it is a country that embraces innovation and customizes it to its own needs. But I digress.
The purpose of this piece is not to assign blame but to highlight potential solutions. One solution that shines through is the concept of 15-minute cities. A 15-minute city is designed so that all essential services—schools, healthcare, parks, financial institutions—are no more than a 15-minute commute by road.
Imagine a world where your daily commute takes no longer than 15 minutes. It’s a vision that not only promises work-life balance but also offers a much-needed environmental reprieve, with reduced fuel consumption and fewer emissions. The benefits of such a model are numerous:
Reduced Traffic Congestion: With less reliance on cars, traffic eases, resulting in shorter commute times, improved well-being, and a healthier work-life balance.
Cleaner Environment: Fewer cars on the road mean lower air pollution, contributing significantly to combating climate change.
Health and Social Bonds: Walking and cycling are encouraged, boosting physical health and strengthening social ties within the community.
Thriving Local Businesses: As people stay closer to home, local businesses flourish with increased foot traffic, creating a vibrant neighborhood atmosphere. Economic activity spreads evenly across the city, breathing new life into shops and services beyond central hubs.
Easier Access to Services: Essential services like schools, healthcare, and groceries become easily accessible, fostering inclusivity and easing the strain on public transportation.
Fostering Inclusion: This model ensures that no matter where someone lives, they have access to the same opportunities, creating a more inclusive and equitable city.
Resilience in Crises: A decentralized structure, with services spread throughout, helps cities adapt more effectively to challenges like pandemics or natural disasters.
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) plays a pivotal role in bringing the 15-minute city concept to life. By mapping out urban areas and analyzing spatial data, GIS helps planners identify where essential services are lacking and where improvements can be made. It enables efficient zoning, optimal placement of resources, and real-time monitoring of traffic patterns or environmental impacts. In a country like India, where cities are complex and densely populated, GIS offers a smart, data-driven approach to designing walkable neighborhoods, ensuring that every community has access to the amenities they need.
Admittedly, there are challenges. Implementing this in densely populated areas can be complex, potentially leading to gentrification and rising property values, which could displace lower-income residents. Additionally, some might resist the shift from car-dependent lifestyles. There is also the concern of limited job diversity within such a localized area. Yet, with the rise of remote work, job opportunities are increasingly flexible and accessible, allowing this issue to be overcome.
In India, where close-knit families and social networks often span across neighborhoods, this connectivity remains intact even as local living is prioritized. By creating more livable, walkable spaces, the 15-minute city model champions sustainability and inclusivity while addressing the ever-evolving demands of urban life.
In conclusion, while no solution is without its challenges, the 15-minute city offers a pathway toward more balanced, resilient, and harmonious urban living. As India continues to rise, this model could be a blueprint for a future where well-being, community, and sustainability take center stage in our cities.

Travelling Around Northern India Aboard a Special Train
Our adventure began at the Safdarjung railway station, from where the Buddhist Circuit Special Train, an exclusive air-conditioned train for Buddhist circuit destinations organized by the IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited), commenced.
The unexpected highlight of our departure was the warm red-carpet welcome. We were greeted with flowers, snacks, and the melodious tunes of Indian musicians playing the tabla, flute, and organ.
Our first destination was Gaya, 1089 km from Delhi, which we covered in approximately 18 hours. Our full journey took us across Northern India and into Nepal, encompassing all the prominent locations connected to the life of Gautama Buddha. These destinations included Bodhgaya, Nalanda, Rajgir, Varanasi, Sarnath, Lumbini, Kushinagar, and Sravasti, with our final stop in Agra to witness the breathtaking Taj Mahal. In total, we traversed over 2600 kilometers.
Another enchanting experience awaited us during our boat ride on the holy Ganga River in Varanasi, where we observed the Aarti festival. On the riverbanks, thousands of people paid their respects to Mother Ganga through music and prayer.
Complementing this incredible journey, the train itself offered a unique experience with its clean berths, a multi-cuisine restaurant (the masala tea being a particularly memorable highlight), a mini-library, and even a foot massager on board.
I am delighted by the exceptional on-board and off-board services, the superb hotel accommodations, quality transportation facilities, a meticulously planned itinerary, and an English-speaking tourist guide who was always ready and eager to assist us. The safety and security we experienced throughout the journey were equally commendable and reassuring. I wish to express my deepest gratitude to IRCTC for providing us with this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

RAF women cannot fly the F-35 stealth jet because 'the helmets are too heavy'
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/02/2023 - 12:00 in Military
None of the about 30 female pilots of the Royal British Air Force (RAF) is flying in the F-35 stealth fighter. The reason is the current helmet used in the 5th generation fighter.
Speaking to the Defense Committee, the head of the Air Force, Sir Mike Wigston, said that women are very delicate for the F-35 heavy helmet. Because to transport the Gen III model used by the RAF, British pilots have to weigh at least 68 kilos. Lighter pilots are at risk of neck injuries if they have to eject from the F-35 in an emergency.
The pilots of the new RAF F-35 stealth fighter aircraft, which entered service in June 2018 with the illustrious Squadron 617 "Dambusters", are equipped with an exclusive electronic helmet.
The helmet full of electronics offers pilots not only protection, but also an information package, including cameras with thermal sensors or night vision that follows their gaze, allowing them to "look through" the plane for an almost complete situational awareness.
In fact, the helmet that accompanies the F-35 Lightning II is significantly heavier than that of other fighters, weighing 2.5 kg. Because it is basically equipped with displays that the pilot needs with the information for his missions - including speed, direction, altitude, target information and warnings. Instead of a heads-up display, the F-35 information is projected directly into the pilot's display, reducing the pilot's workload and increasing responsiveness. A camera system mounted on the aircraft also allows the pilot to use the helmet viewfinder to see things under the jet wings.
Parliamentarian Tobias Ellwood, chairman of the House of Commons defense committee, said: "There needs to be a second lighter helmet for women to wear."
There is also a "light" version of the F-35 helmet. With only 2.09 kilos, it is similar in weight to F-15 and F-16 helmets. Lighter pilots could also fly with him. However, the head of the Air Force does not believe in the purchase of the $400,000 equipment. "We would have problems approving it in terms of safety because it does not offer the pilot the protection that the other helmet has now," he said.
Wigston sees no discrimination against female pilots: "This is the minimum weight limit for the F-35, and it doesn't matter if you are a man, a woman or anyone else, that's what applies."
The air marshal also said that, on a case-by-case basis, if the fitness of a female or very light pilot meant that they were more suitable for flying on the Lightning than on the Typhoon, the RAF could consider issuing them a "lighter safe helmet".
Is the helmet issue really the reason why no woman sits in the cockpit of a British F-35? The average weight of British women is 72 kilos, so the 68 kilo limit should not be a problem anyway.
unlike RAF, at USAF the gender issue in the F-35 cockpit is no longer a problem, with the first woman driving the Lightning II for the first time in 2015. According to USAF F-35 pilot Christine Mau: "The plane does not know what the gender of his pilot is. And he doesn't care either."

The Rise of Self-Drive Cars in Kochi: Transforming Urban Mobility
As urban centers across the globe grapple with the dual challenges of increasing population densities and the need for sustainable transportation solutions, the emergence of self-drive cars has garnered significant attention. Kochi, a picturesque city located on the southwest coast of India, is no exception. Known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant economy, Kochi is poised to incorporate self-driving technology into its transportation landscape, potentially revolutionizing the way residents and visitors navigate the city.
Understanding Self-Drive Technology
Self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles, are equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence (AI) systems that allow them to navigate and operate without human intervention. These vehicles use a combination of real-time data, mapping, and machine learning to interpret their surroundings, make driving decisions, and respond to various traffic scenarios. The technology promises not only to enhance road safety but also to mitigate traffic congestion and reduce environmental impact.
The Current Transportation Scenario in Kochi
Kochi's transportation system reflects a common challenge faced by many rapidly urbanizing regions. The city's infrastructure often struggles to keep pace with the influx of commuters, leading to traffic congestion and related issues such as air pollution. Traditional public transport options like buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis remain popular; however, they have limitations in terms of coverage, accessibility, and convenience. The increasing number of vehicles on the road has exacerbated these concerns, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions.
Potential Benefits of Self Drive Cars in Kochi
1. **Enhanced Safety**: One of the most compelling arguments for the adoption of self-driving cars pertains to their potential to reduce accidents. With human error being a leading cause of road accidents, autonomous vehicles, powered by sophisticated algorithms and sensors, can accurately perceive their environment and react more swiftly than a human driver. This advancement could lead to a significant decrease in traffic-related fatalities within the city.
2. **Reduced Traffic Congestion**: The integration of self-drive cars into Kochi's transportation systems has the potential to streamline traffic flow. Equipped with real-time routing capabilities, autonomous vehicles can optimize their paths based on current traffic conditions, thus reducing travel times and alleviating congestion on the roads. This may also lead to a decrease in fuel consumption, further contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
3. **Accessibility and Inclusivity**: Autonomous vehicles can serve as a game changer for individuals with mobility impairments, the elderly, or those unable to drive. By providing a safe and convenient means of transportation, self-driving cars can foster greater independence for these populations, thereby enhancing their access to essential services and opportunities within Kochi.
4. **Sustainable Urban Mobility**: The incorporation of self-drive technology in Kochi could complement the city’s commitment to sustainability. Potentially integrated with electric vehicle (EV) technology, autonomous cars could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. Moreover, car-sharing models centered around self-driving vehicles could minimize the overall number of cars on the road, further contributing to a greener urban environment.
Challenges to Overcome
Despite the promising advantages, the deployment of self-driving cars in Kochi is fraught with challenges that must be addressed before widespread adoption can occur:
1. **Regulatory Framework**: The first hurdle relates to the establishment of a robust regulatory framework governing the operation of autonomous vehicles. Policymakers must create comprehensive guidelines that ensure safety, privacy, and accountability while fostering innovation in this emerging sector.
2. **Public Perception and Trust**: Gaining the public's trust is imperative for the successful integration of self-driving cars. Skepticism surrounding the reliability of autonomous technology, particularly in a complex urban environment such as Kochi, must be addressed through public awareness campaigns, pilot programs, and transparent communication regarding safety measures.
3. **Infrastructure Readiness**: The existing infrastructure in Kochi may require significant upgrades to accommodate autonomous vehicles. This includes the development of smart traffic signals, improved road markings, and dedicated lanes for self-drive cars. A collaborative approach involving government, private sector stakeholders, and urban planners will be essential for fostering the necessary infrastructure changes.
4. **Integration with Existing Transport Systems**: The coexistence of self-driving cars with traditional forms of transportation poses logistical challenges. Coordinating the operation of autonomous vehicles alongside buses, rickshaws, and taxis will require a well-thought-out integration strategy that maximizes efficiency and minimizes disruption.
The Road Ahead: Expectations for the Future
As Kochi embarks on this transformative journey towards autonomous mobility, various stakeholders, including government agencies, technology developers, and citizens, must collaborate to shape a future where self-drive cars contribute positively to urban life. Trials and pilot projects may play a crucial role in assessing the technology's viability in Kochi's unique context.
Additionally, educational initiatives focusing on the benefits and functionalities of self-driving technology can pave the way for broader acceptance and understanding among the public. Furthermore, investments in research and development within the autonomous vehicle sphere could spawn innovative solutions tailored to the specific challenges faced by Kochi.
In conclusion, the advent of self-drive cars represents not just a technological advancement but a potential paradigm shift in how the inhabitants of Kochi experience mobility. With the right regulatory frameworks, public acceptance, and infrastructure adaptation, self-driving cars could indeed revitalize Kochi's transport landscape, making it safer, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable. As we stand at this juncture, the future of self-drive cars in Kochi looks promising and full of possibilities.

EV Charging Stations: A Promising Business Opportunity
The growing impact of climate change, driven in large part by air pollution, has led to increased awareness of sustainable solutions. Environmental advocates are encouraging a shift towards a more eco-friendly future, and electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a key option to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change. This rising demand for EVs presents a valuable business opportunity for forward-thinking entrepreneurs and investors: EV charging stations.
The Growing Demand for Electric Vehicles
The demand for electric vehicles is on the rise due to their eco-friendly nature and cost-saving benefits. As consumers become more aware of these advantages, automakers are responding by investing in EV production, offering new models with better performance and longer battery life. This growth in the EV market has highlighted the need for a more extensive charging infrastructure, creating a strong business opportunity in EV charging stations.
Government Incentives and Support
Governments worldwide are supporting the transition to cleaner transportation by implementing policies that promote the adoption of EVs. Many governments offer incentives, subsidies, and grants to both consumers and businesses, making it easier to invest in EVs and the charging infrastructure required to support them. For entrepreneurs, these policies create financial advantages and competitive opportunities to establish charging stations while contributing to environmental sustainability.
Promising Market Potential
The market for EV charging stations is highly promising. As global efforts to reduce carbon emissions intensify, more businesses, municipalities, and property developers recognize the value of offering EV charging services. Public and private spaces, including restaurants, shopping centers, hotels, parking garages, and residential communities, are installing charging stations to attract eco-conscious customers. Entrepreneurs can capitalize on this growing demand by strategically placing charging stations in high-traffic locations and collaborating with local businesses.
Key Strategies for Success
To succeed in the EV charging station business, careful planning and execution are essential. Below are some key strategies:
Location Selection: Conduct in-depth market research to identify regions with high EV adoption rates and limited charging options. Choose locations with a high volume of EV traffic to optimize visibility and usage.
Partnerships and Collaborations: Form partnerships with property owners, businesses, and local governments to secure optimal locations and take advantage of their established customer base. Work with local authorities to streamline the permitting process and comply with regulations.
User Experience and Technology: Invest in reliable, user-friendly charging equipment that supports a range of EV models and charging standards. Incorporate innovative features, such as mobile apps, easy payment systems, and real-time updates, to enhance the customer experience.

Public Education: Run awareness campaigns to educate the public, particularly younger and middle-aged consumers, about the benefits of EVs and the environmental impact of sustainable transportation. Highlight how investing in EVs contributes to environmental conservation.
India’s EV market is growing rapidly, with the market projected to grow at a CAGR of over 37% by 2023. By 2027, EV production and related industries are expected to contribute significantly to the country’s GDP. India is positioning itself as a leader in the global EV market, making this an opportune time to invest in the EV charging infrastructure.
Investing in EV charging stations represents a promising business opportunity. Entrepreneurs who enter this space now can take advantage of government support, growing market demand, and partnerships with key players like Plugzmart, a leading EV charger manufacturer in India. By acting now, you can contribute to a sustainable future while building a successful business.
