Gujarat elections: PM makes splash with seaplane ride to mark end of campaign
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi soared into the clear Ahmedabad sky on a seaplane from the Sabarmati river marking a dramatic end to a gruelling election campaign, the flight created huge waves in Gujarat's politically turbulent waters.
The BJP was quick to hail it as a reflection of "vikas" ushered in by the party's governments in the state, while the Congress debunked its development claim.
"This is a demonstration of 'vikas'. The whole world is watching how development has taken a leap from the Sabarmati river," BJP spokesman Sambit Patra said.
If he wants to fly on a seaplane, there is nothing wrong about it. But the issue is not the seaplane...It is the distraction (from the real issues). The question is what has been done for Gujarat in the last 22 years?' said Rahul Gandhi
×
Congress's president designate Rahul Gandhi was, however, not impressed.
"If he wants to fly on a seaplane, there is nothing wrong about it. But the issue is not the seaplane...It is the distraction (from the real issues). The question is what has been done for Gujarat in the last 22 years," he told a press conference in Ahmedabad.
Modi ended the campaign for the second phase of Gujarat Assembly polls in style as he took a seaplane ride from the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad to Dharoi Dam in north Gujarat, and returned after offering prayers at the famous Ambaji Temple and holding a road show.
He boarded the single-engine seaplane from near the Sardar Bridge connecting the old city with Ahmedabad west and flew to Dharoi Dam in Mehsana district.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani claimed it was the first time a seaplane landed on a water body in the country.
Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala mocked Modi's ride and the BJP's claim of it being a reflection of development.
"Vikas ki baatein unko na bhai, kehte hain unko hawa hawai. (They don't like the talk of development. These are people who engage in empty talk)," he tweeted in Hindi, in a parody of the 'Hawa Hawai' song from hit Bollywood flick 'Mr India'.
Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed the Congress for criticising Modi's seaplane ride, and said the previous Congress rule was marked by "choppers scam".
BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said,"The very talk of development hassles them. The people of Gujarat are happy about the bullet train project, but they (the Congress) are 'pareshan' about it."
Also read: Modi claims Pakistan trying to influence Gujarat elections
No one can lamely question my public service: Manmohan to Modi on Pak meddling allegations
The ride, however, was a hit among the locals who chanted "Modi! Modi!" as the craft took off from the Sardar Bridge-end on the Sabarmati riverfront, which the BJP dispensation has been flaunting as a manifestation of development under Modi when he was the state's chief minister.
From Dharoi dam site, the prime minister reached the temple by road after covering a distance of around 50 km. He was greeted by the people of Ambaji town during a roadshow that stretched from the outskirts of the temple town to near the shrine.
The prime minister apparently chose to fly by the seaplane to end his campaign in style after the Ahmedabad district administration yesterday cancelled the roadshows by both Modi and Rahul Gandhi for logistical reasons.
Modi told an election rally yesterday that for the first time in the history of the country a seaplane would land on the Sabarmati river.
Rupani had said it was for the first time in the country's history that a seaplane would land on a water body and that would be the Sabarmati river.
However, Priyanka Chaturvedi, another Congress spokesperson, claimed seaplanes had been flown in the country in the past too. "2010 in Andaman 2015 in Kerala. However let facts never come in the way of BJP and Modi's narrative," she tweeted.

Tourism Potential In Banswara
“BANSWARA AND IT’S TOURIST POTENTIAL”
History:
The Banswara district forms eastern part of the region known as Vagad or Vagwar. The district was formerly a princely state ruled by the Maharavals. It is said that a Bhil ruler Bansia ruled over it and Banswara was named after his name. Bansia was defeated and killed by Jagmal Singh who became the first Maharaval of the princely state.
It is also named so because of the bamboos (Bans) which were found in abundance in the forests. In 1913 some bhils revolted under the headship of a social reformer Govindgiri and Punja which was suppressed in November, 1913. Hundreds of Bhils were shot dead at the Mangarh hillock where they were holding a peaceful meeting. The event is also known as the Mini Jalianwala Bagh massacre. The place has become sacred and is better known as the Mangarh Dham.
With the merger of the princely states in the Union of India, the Banswara State and Kushalgarh chief ship got merged in the Greater Rajasthan in 1949 and Banswara was carved out as a separate district by merging these principalities.
People:
The district is predominantly inhabited by tribal’s mainly Bhils, Bhil Meenas, Damor, Charpotas, Ninamas, etc. The district population is 14, 20,601 (2001). The rural population is 13, 13,238 (2001) and the urban population is 1, 07,363 (2001). The main occupation of the people, especially of tribal’s, is agriculture. The tribal’s live in small one-room houses, known as "tapra", which lie scattered all over the area.
The other major castes are Patels, Rajputs, Brahmans, Mahajans, and Muslims. The dialect spoken in the district is Wagdi, a mixture of Guajarati and Mewari. Literacy percentage is 44.63 (2001) but women literacy, though doubled as per 2001 census, is only 28.43%. Increase in total literacy percentage has been by 18.22 because of the intensive literacy campaign in the district.
The approximate current district population is 20, 00,000.Out of these the rural population is 18, 50,000 and the urban is 1, 50,000.
The tribal population is approximately 14, 40,000 that is 72% approximately of total population.
In the last 10 to 15 years awareness level of local urban people got increased a lot as many of the younger generation people are going for studies and work to places like Bangalore, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad and other metro category cities and even to abroad in IT and many other sectors.
The rate of growth of Banswara is considerable in the last 5 to 7 years both commercially and residencially.Earlier a road leading to Udaipur and Ahmedabad is developing but right now Ratlam and Dahod road is also on the developing spree.
Ratlam Road which used to be traditionally poor is now in a very good condition and journey time between Banswara and Ratlam got reduced by 1 to 1.25 hours.
NH113 - Starting from the border of Gujarat to Banswara - Bari - Sohagpura - Pratapgarh and ending at its meeting point with National Highway 79 close to Nimbahera (covering a distance of 225 km) has started working since last 1 to 1.5 years and connectivity between Chittorgarh/Jaipur and Banswara got improved by at least 15 to 20%.
NH-927A starting from Sawarupganj –Kotra-Kherwara-Doongarpur-Sagwara-Bansawara-Ratlam is going to be of 290 km in length and will start most probably by 2018 end as DPR(Detailed Project Report) is in full swing. It will connect us to NH-14 at Swarupganj and will further enhance connectivity via proposed route.
In the time to come specially seven to ten years down the line it’s growth is going to be good as Nuclear Power Plant work is underway, commercially it is expanding anyway but rail connectivity is going to be big hindrance otherwise industries would have blossomed as everything water, labor, land is there in Banswara only aspect lacking is enterprise of local people and support of politicians to reform.
Culture:
Situated amongst the valleys of the Aravalis, Banswara represents tribal culture in its original form. Its area was covered mostly by bamboo trees (Bans) in the past because of which it was called Banswara. Banswara town was founded by King Jagmal Singh. Religiously, having eleven and a half Swayambhoo Shivlings, it was also called 'Lodhikashi' or little Kashi. Yet another name for it is 'An area of Hundred Islands'.
Being in the southern part of Rajasthan, its boundary meets with Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. A compact culture is the result of this inter-regional neighborhood. The so called vagdi Culture is nothing but a mixture of Gujarati, Malwi, Rajasthani and Mewari cultures. Banswara district is rich in forests, hills and wildlife.Tribals are the natives of this region. The place is known for its ancient temples and natural beauty.
Geographical Location, Main crops and Minerals:
District Banswara is situated in the southern - most part of Rajasthan. It has an area of 5037 square kilometers and lies between 23.11° N to 23.56° N latitudes and 73.58° E to 74.49° E. longitudes.
It is bounded on the north by Dhariawad tehsil of Udaipur district and Pratapgarh district; on the east by Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh; on the west by Sagwara and Aspur tehsils of Dungarpur district; and on the south by Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. It also touches the boundary of Panchmahal district of Gujarat on the south-west.
The region represents a rugged terrain undulated by short ridges west of Banswara. The eastern part of it is occupied by flat-topped hills of the Deccan trap. It has the southern end of the Aravali mountains.
The drainage system belongs to the Mahi River which originates from Amjera hills near Dhar in M.P. Its main tributaries are Anas, Chanp, Erav, Haran and Kagdi. The Mahi Bajaj Sagar dam has been constructed on the Mahi, some 16 km away from Banswara town. Right and Left Main Canals and their distributaries irrigate 60,149 hect. of land. Normal annual rainfall is about 82.59 cms, once it was also known as Cherapunji of Rajasthan.
Maize, Wheat, Cotton, Gram are main crops. Graphite, Soapstone, Dolomite, Rock Phosphate, Limestone and a variety of marbles are found. Gold mineral is also found around Jagpura. Forest land consists of 20% of the total area but most of the forest land is devoid of trees. Hills have become bald-headed.
Tourist Sites:
Banswara is having many tourist spots which are commonly known, they are Sai-Dham Temple, Kagdi Pick up Wear, Arthuna Temples, Tripurasundri, Talwada Ganesh Temple, Mahi Dam & Mangarh.
The above mentioned places are also commonly publicized tourist centers via various mediums like print, website and promotional material of RTDC but other than aforesaid venues many spots and sites are there which will greatly enhance the present ability of Banswara if concrete efforts are done by RTDC for its development as a tourist place as there is no concrete road map or activities other than usual Mahi Festival, Beneshwar Fair, Ghotia Amba & Mangarh Fair.
Beneshwar Fair is not exclusively for Banswara as it belongs to Dungarpur but still it is a regular feature mainly for the tribal’s of Banswara.
Mahi Dam and its back water small-small islands(“A City of Hundred Islands”) like Chachakota,Jua,Jholla,Kakanseja & Kadelia Falls etc. are places where nature truly exhibits itself fully during monsoon. After first rain mountains usually get covered with lot of greenery and concomitantly with falls it is capable of pulling lot of tourists but adequate planning is not there.
Above paragraph is all about nature and scenic beauty but Banswara is also known as “Lodi Kashi” as there are many small temples throughout the district.
Some of which are Madareshwar,Abdulla Pir, Surya,Ganpati and Dwarikadish temples in Talwada,Brahma temple of Cheench, Dagia Bheraw in Ghatol,Andeshwar Parshwanath Jain temple etc.
All the above temples or shrines can become religious places for religious tourists if developed and taken care with appropriate road map like Ambaji in Gujarat.
Ancient remains of district reflects sculpture and establish art like 9th and 11th century temples of Arthuna,Paraheda,Talwada and Cheench old temples are proof of that.
Pandavs Agyatvas places like Ghotia Amba, Ramkund, and Bhimkund are capable of magnetizing tourists.
In southern Rajasthan region Udaipur is a place for domestic and foreign tourists but Banswara is not pulling any of them as not a single foreign visitor is coming to us as there are no solid efforts administratively on part of RTDC inspite of ample scenic beauty, abundance of religious places and ancient remains and closeness to Udaipur in terms of mileage.
Since last many years two personnel’s are working in RTDC centre of Banswara and they are not courteous(“Padharo Mahare Desh”) even too local people so it’s high time one should work on the development of Banswara as a prominent tourist place for all kind of tourists whether religious, seasonal or ancient purpose.Leave apart Udaipur which is fantastic but Dungarpur is also polarizing lot of foreign tourists for festivals like Beneshwar and Bird Fair.
Lot of migratory birds are coming to Vagad region and since quite a number of years Dungarpur has organized Bird Fair but inspite of huge population of migratory birds like Neelkanth etc. we are not doing anything so cumulative thoughtfulness is required in all the directions for complete realization of Banswara as a tourist place to reckon with.
It’s great that Government of India is now giving emphasis on tribal tourism and has allocated rupees 100 crores for the same and Banswara is definitely going to be a part of tribal tourist circuit and one can visibly see 5 to 7 years down the line implementation of same.
It will greatly enhance the value of Banswara and generates lot of businesses and employment on local basis as it is not lacking in anything except enterprise and additionally if rail connectivity got established cosmopolitan culture will arrive and further optimization in resources utilization is going to be achieved.
