Paresh finally landed his first ad through friends who were casting directors. “The minute I was on a set, acting in an advertisement in front of a camera, I got all my answers, that this is it!,” he added. Paresh has been part of dozens of TVCs either as an actor or as a voice-over artiste.

Paresh, who is also fond of singing, wanted to debut as a lead. “When Tiger happened, I wasn’t told anything. Shanoo (Sharma, casting director for YRF) said I saw your ad. She called me for an audition without any brief,” Paresh shared while recalling his first brush with YRF. Later, when Shanoo offered him Azaan, that’s when he got to know he had bagged Salman-Katrina’s Tiger Zinda Hai.

“I had a thought in my head that being a Salman Khan film how much impact will I be able to make. But, the minute I read the script, I was mind-blown. Azaan was something that sounded so beautiful with a lot of meaning to it. I realised my part was not dependent on anyone, he is not like the hero’s friend. Azaan had his own identity. He was brought on the mission because Tiger needed him. And above that he is a Muslim whose patriotism is questioned. There are only 3% Muslims in Indian Army. So, Ali (Abbas Zafar) had very beautifully touched upon all these little things,” Paresh explained.

Paresh and others had to undergo martial arts training and learn hand combat to fight without weapons. “We used to train with actual riffles which were 10-12 kgs, so that it looks very natural onscreen. This training was very important. By the end of it, we are actually soldiers. Now if you give me any riffle, I can fire,” he quipped.

So how was it working with Salman Khan and he shared an instance from the film’s sets. “We were shooting this underwater scene in an oil tanker. Outside it was 50 degrees. So to cool the water they had put ice in it but it became very cold. I’m someone who cannot tolerate cold and I started shivering. Salman saw my state and he didn’t say anything. He asked his spot boy to get a black coffee. When the coffee came he gave it to me. I was surprised. That was such a beautiful moment,” he said.

Talking about his first shot Paresh shared how Salman’s one hug imbibed confidence in him. “We had to walk into the factory, that’s it. It’s pretty rare to see non-Indians here, let alone a group of young people who dress differently, talk differently, range from white to black to mixed-race to East Asian, and wield around their iPhones with careless abandon (myself included.) While I am not white, I almost always travel with others who are, or pass as such, and boy does it show. White skin carries immense power and attention as it commands vendors to heckle you to buy things, beggars to linger by you or even follow you, the eyes of passerbys to be glued to you, and sometimes even stops traffic (helpful for crossing the street, at least.) Even though I’m with a group of other Americans and speak English, people seem to be confused by me. They say, “even you?” when we say we’re from America, or they ask me where my parents are from. It’s a micro aggression that I’m somewhat used to in the States, but getting denied my nationality on the basis of my physical features still stings. Why are my peers automatically accepted as American and I am not? I’m foreign in every way no matter what identity I choose: not American because of my Chinese looks but also not Asian because “my English is too good."

Yet to speak of being an Other in a society organized by caste and class, one that systematically excludes and abuses the most vulnerable and disenfranchised, seems grossly out of proportion. Getting overcharged by the dollar equivalent of 70 cents or stared at because of your foreignness is nothing compared to the everyday atrocities and human rights violations subjected on Dalits. These are the untouchables, the lowest rung of the caste system that technically aren’t even part of it because to include them would be to acknowledge their existence. Forget physical appearance, you’re pretty much f***ed from the moment you’re born because your very being is considered impure and polluting to higher castes. I still struggle to fully comprehend the caste system and how it manifests itself in the city. Even though untouchability was technically abolished after India’s independence and there are affirmative action programs to promote equality, there’s still caste-based discrimination in access to physical and social capital like jobs and education. It’s jarring to apply this knowledge when you see street sweepers or garbage pickers and know that they probably didn’t have a choice in their line of work and how they are seen by others. Thinking about how power and perceived/actual difference play into everyday social interactions has definitely informed my understanding of both myself and of the people here. I may have social and economic power over many here with my bank accounts, citizenship and educational status but I still feel powerless when rickshaw drivers knowingly overcharge me for a ride, begging children stalk me for money on the street, or locals only listen to the guys in our group and overlook the women. Despite a few such negative encounters, I strive to experience this country and all its complexity with open-mindedness, respect, and curiosity.

i have had to make peace with moving a lot.

we'd move every 3-4 years from city to city, state to state. that's the issue with having a parent with a govt job. i see fauji brats and all boast about how they moved every two years and are so cool. no doubt they are cool. so am i. i have learnt to make friends and leave some, to adjust into cultures, food, languages, and habits. i have made peace with 8pm sunsets in ahmedabad and 5pm sunsets in calcutta. i have made peace with neverending traffic noises in delhi and deafening silence in durgapur. i have made peace with humidity and dryness and extreme cold and none at all. i have made peace with small towns and gigantic cities.

but let's talk about how it all affects you mentally. having changed over 6 schools in 14 years of education is no small change. earlier it was fun - because new uniform seemed obviously cooler than the last. but eventually the dreaded reality set in - that I'm seeing it all for the last time on my way to the station/airport. the empty halls when we first entered the house seemed so much emptier when the last carton was loaded on the truck. the last night in a certain room that you have countless memories in made you feel even emptier on the inside. moving from a spacious 2 bhk to a cramped 3 bhk, to a cramped 2 bhk, to a spacious 3bhk so on and so forth. moving from the first floor to the sixth to the ground to the fourth. from quarters to apartments, from lifts to staircases. through all this change the only constant you find is your own self. but boy oh boy will that change as well.

and it messes with you. a lot. when your only pillar is yourself and you don't even know that person. when you're too busy adjusting to exterior changes to figure yourself out. every new school brought a new personality, a new story of who you were and what you were perceived as. you become an accumulation of first experiences and impressions. participate in one debate and now that's who you are for the next three years. join the poetry club and now you're a writer. act, president of drama club. dance, light of the annual function. quiz, smarty-pants. have a boyfriend, never earn a teacher's respect. lol.

it takes a year. it does. no matter how extroverted, adjusting, happy-go-lucky, accepting person you are, it takes a year to call a place home. to know its streets and secrets. to have memories in unlikely locations. to associate feelings with objects and places. to build a reputation you like. to make mistakes and mend them in time. to find friends of your kind. to make peace.

you enjoy it for a year or two. start missing it before it's over. and when you're gone, everything is the same except you. you are the unfortunate idiot who goes back to square one. and it breaks your heart.

the point of this entire rant is that I'm seeing what happened to me over many painful years of life is happening to everyone around me in these few months of college. the friend in me wants to smile, hug them, tell them it'll be ok because i know it too well (even though theirs isn't as bad tbh). but the sadist in me is shamelessly snickering for what they never understood about me - they shall now live it.

life has funny ways of making peace.
