STANDING BEFORE GOD
"You are standing today - all of you - before the Lord your God…." (Deut. 29:9) At the end of his life, Moses tells the Jewish people that they are standing before God, entering into His covenant and pledging to follow His laws. Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman (1914-2017) asks, “In truth, every one of us is constantly standing before God; if so, what is the great significance that Moses had to inform the Jewish people that they were specifically standing before God at this point in time?" Rabbi Moshe Kormornick answers that while it is true that we are constantly standing before God and He is aware of our every action, there are certain times when we are especially close to the Holy One. Imagine a land governed by a benevolent ruler; everybody in the land is under his watch. Now imagine a subject who chooses to devote his life to the king’s service. He lives on the palace grounds, is known by the king personally, fully dedicates himself to serving the king, and in return he is well cared for. When Moses tells the Jewish people that they are standing before God, he is telling them that they will no longer be mere subjects of the King, but rather loyal servants, standing “before God” in a new and unprecedented manner.  Let us commit to seeking a deeper relationship with the King of Kings, to lovingly serve Him in all our ways and be lovingly cared for in return.

Prince of Torah
Legendary Sage
Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky was an enormously influential modern sage known as the “Gadol ha Dor” – the great one of the generation. He led the Lithuanian branch of Orthodox Judaism, which is known for Torah scholarship and character refinement.
Chaim Kanievsky was born in Pinsk, Poland (now Belarus), in 1928. His father, Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, was a revered scholar known as the Steipler Gaon. When young Chaim was six years old, the family moved to British-Mandate Palestine. Growing up in Bnei Brak, Chaim Kanievsky was raised among sages: his father the Steipler Gaon became a prominent Torah authority and leader in Israel, and Chaim’s uncle was the holy Chazon Ish (Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz). The Chazon Ish had no children of his own and Chaim Kanievsky became like a son to him.
The boy was a Torah prodigy with a photographic memory. He was a brilliant student from a prominent family, but genuinely humble and modest. For his bar mitzvah, he completed the entire Babylonian Talmud! Chaim Kanievsky was a rabbinical student when he was drafted into the newly formed Israel Defense Forces in 1948 and he served in the War of Independence. The young soldier was known for bringing a volume of Talmud to the battlefield so that he could keep studying. In 1951 Rabbi Kanievsky married Batsheva Elyashiv, the daughter of the prominent Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, and they had eight children.
Rabbi Kanievsky was known for his astonishing regimen of Torah learning; he woke up at 2 am and studied continuously for as many as 17 hours a day! Because of his unparalleled level of scholarship and highly refined character traits, he became known as the Prince of Torah.
Rabbi Kanievsky’s written works cover a wide range of topics including obscure areas of Jewish law such as farming and Temple sacrifices. He shunned a public leadership role but wielded enormous influence and power from his small, book-crammed apartment in Bnei Brak. Even though he represented the Lithuanian stream of Orthodox Judaism, Rabbi Kanievsky was revered across the religious world. His time was spent studying Torah, writing books, and replying to a constant stream of queries about every possible aspect of Jewish law. Every response was astonishingly brief, usually just one line, sometimes just one word, but filled with meaning. Rabbi Kanievsky held no formal paid position; his father told him that his contribution is to sit and learn, and that’s what he did.
Every year he hosted a festive meal on the night before Passover to celebrate completing his yearly Torah cycle: the entire Tanach (Hebrew Bible), the Babylonian Talmud, the Jerusalem Talmud, the Mishneh Torah, Shulchan Aruch, Midrash, Zohar, Tosefta and the writings of the Ari (Rabbi Isaac Luria.) Every year!
While Rabbi Kanievsky was secluded with his books, his wife Batsheva welcomed hundreds of people into their small apartment every week to give advice and blessings. She was a true woman of valor. Their small apartment, filled with books and beds, was always open to anybody who needed help. The Rabbi and Batsheva ate all of their simple meals together throughout their sixty years of marriage. Rabbi Kanievsky’s beloved Rebbetzin died suddenly during the Sukkot holiday in 2011. Over 50,000 mourners attended her funeral. Her passing left a huge void in the Jewish world.
After Batsheva’s death, Rabbi Kanievsky founded Belev Echad (One Heart) an Israeli nonprofit that provides social services for sick children and adults. He received thousands of visitors a year who came to him for blessings, advice, legal rulings, or just because they wanted to be in the presence of a great sage.
In 2017, the Gadol HaDor (generation’s leader) Rabbi Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman died, and Rabbi Kanievsky became the Gadol HaDor, the pre-eminent posek (decider of Jewish law) for hundreds of thousands of Jews around the world.
Rabbi Kanievsky contracted Covid early in the pandemic, and although he recovered from the virus, his health began to decline. Until the end of his long life, he  never left the Holy Land. Rabbi Kanievsky died right before Shabbat on March 18, 2022. His funeral was the biggest in Israeli history. More than 500,000 mourners thronged the streets of Bnei Brak to attend the great rabbi’s funeral. Religious and political leaders across the spectrum paid their respects to the tzaddik (saintly sage.)
May Rav Chaim Kanievsky’s memory always be for a blessing!

Aharon Leib Shteinman, Ultra-Orthodox Leader in Israel, Dies at 104
Tumblr media
Politically, he was regarded as a moderating force, cautioning against implacable confrontations with the government over issues like a series of court decisions that required the drafting of all eligible men — observant or not — for the military.
Almost all young ultra-Orthodox men had been able to secure exemptions, but Rabbi Shteinman reluctantly conceded that those Haredim who were not…

FREE FISH
“We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt free of charge…” (Num 11:5)
In this week’s Torah portion, Beha'alotcha, the Israelites complain to Moses about their menu options in the wilderness. God provides delicious manna from heaven for them to eat every day, but these former slaves long for meat and other dishes they consumed in Egypt. Their ingratitude to God is startling, and so is the way they characterize the food they ate while enslaved: “free of charge.” Did they not endure back-breaking labor in order to receive basic sustenance from their Egyptian taskmasters? How can food given to a slave be considered “free of charge?” Medieval commentator Rashi (1040-1105) interprets “free” in this context to mean “free of the obligation to follow God’s laws.” More specifically, Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman (1914-2017) explains that “eating for free” means eating without being obligated to say a bracha (blessing) first. But what’s the big deal? Saying a simple blessing before we eat takes only seconds, and infuses Godliness into the most mundane aspects of our lives. A traditional Jew says approximately 100 blessings a day, creating a constant appreciation of God’s kindnesses to us. However, saying blessings over food requires diligence, awareness, and intentionality. We must stop for a moment before slaking our hunger to think about what we are eating and where it came from. The Israelite former slaves missed the days when they didn’t have to take responsibility for their choices or actions.  For those of us who choose a path of traditional Jewish observance, whether through teshuvah (returning to our roots) or conversion, it can be difficult to adjust to a new reality that requires much more from us. It’s certainly easier to eat and do what we want without stopping to think about our Creator. But we choose this often-challenging path because of the monumental reward: a life of purpose, joy, and connection to the Holy One.

<p>'Zero chance of survival' for 36 people trapped inside burning shopping Center</p>
Tumblr media
Philippine firefighters recovered one body from a burning shopping mall on Sunday and there was "zero" chance of survival for 36 other trapped people inside the four-story building in southern Davao town, an official said.
Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said firefighters told distraught relatives of the 36 trapped employees of a company outsourcing firm at the top floor of the NCCC Mall that nobody can endure the extreme heat and thick black smoke.
"They were told that the chances of survival are" she said, adding that among these trapped may be a Chinese or a South Korean, based on the name.
Rodrigo Duterte claims he once threw a kidnapper from a helicopter
It's uncertain when firefighters can break into many areas of the mall, where the blaze was put under control on Sunday morning although smoke continued to billow in the building. The won't cease until all those reported missing are found, Duterte-Carpio stated.
Researchers will determine the cause of the fire and the prospects of criminal lawsuits against the mall officials and owners would be based on the results of the investigation, said the mayor, who is the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte, the mayor and Roman Catholic Church officials went to the site and met with relatives of those trapped office employees late Saturday and asked them to pray. The president was photographed wiping his eyes with a handkerchief, his head bowed, at an emotional moment with all the relatives.
The mall's marketing manager, Janna Abdullah Mutalib, said the fire began Saturday morning at the third floor where clothing, appliances and furniture are sold, after a storm hit Davao and flooded parts of the city. Except for a grocery at the ground floor and the company outsourcing firm at the top floor, the shopping places were closed to the public once the fire began mid-morning, preventing a larger tragedy amid the peak buying season.

Duterte functioned as Davao mayor for several years before being elected to the presidency this past year.
It's been a challenging season for the tough-talking, 72-year-old leader, who faced his most serious crisis when countless pro-Islamic State group extremists laid siege on Marawi city, also in the southern third of the Philippines. He declared martial law in the south to take care of the insurrection, which troops crushed in October.
The storm that blew from the southern Philippines on Sunday reportedly left more than 120 people dead with 160 others still missing.

The complicated legacy of Rabbi Shteinman, who has died aged 104
The greatest, according to some
HE WAS exceptional in several ways. Brought up in the shtetls of what is now Belarus, Aharon Yehudah Leib Shteinman was the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust. He then devoted his life to building the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Israel. Such was his piety that other religious Jews came to regard him as Gadol Hador—the greatest of his generation. But he remained exceedingly modest, sleeping on the same mattress for six decades. During the day it would serve as a sofa for anyone wanting his guidance. Parents, ministers and tycoons passed through his damp one-bedroom flat.
“Ten people at my funeral would be enough,” wrote Rabbi Shteinman in his will. As it happened, hundreds of thousands of ultra-Orthodox men turned out to mourn their leader, who died on December 12th at the age of 104.
Rabbi Shteinman was one of a small group of rabbis who arrived in the new state...

More than 220,000 women sexually bothered on French public transportation over 2 years
More than 220,000 women were sexually bothered on public transport in over two years, the nationwide crime statistics firm said in its first report on the subject, explaining it as a “conservative price quote”.
The Harvey Weinstein scandal in the United States has actually accelerated a rethink of mindsets towards sexual harassment in France, a country that cherishes its self-image as the land of seduction and romance.
“Although the general public mostly focuses on domestic violence, sexual violence committed on the street, on public transportation or in other public locations is simply as major, and merits more attention,” the report said.France’s National Observatory of Criminal Offense and Crook Justice(ONDRP)discovered that 267,000 individuals– 85 percent of whom were females– were sexually pestered on public transportation in between 2014 and 2015, consisting of kissing, groping, flashing and rape.It is the first time the ONDRP, which publishes an annual study on insecurity, has actually focused on sexualon public transport.Paris was voted the 3rd most woman-friendly city in a Thomson Reuters Foundation survey published in October, and ranked 4th least risky for sexual violence. But harassment stays prevalent, many stated on social networks.“ I was spat at, called a slut … and one early morning groped by two chuckling males on a congested city,"Siobhán Dowling stated on

More than 220000 women sexually bothered on French public transportation over 2 years
More than 220,000 women were sexually bothered on public transport in over two years, the nationwide crime statistics firm said in its first report on the subject, explaining it as a "conservative price quote".
The Harvey Weinstein scandal in the United States has actually accelerated a rethink of mindsets towards sexual harassment in France, a country that cherishes its self-image as the land of seduction and romance.
"Although the general public mostly focuses on domestic violence, sexual violence committed on the street, on public transportation or in other public locations is simply as major, and merits more attention," the report said.France's National Observatory of Criminal Offense and Crook Justice(ONDRP)discovered that 267,000 individuals-- 85 percent of whom were females-- were sexually pestered on public transportation in between 2014 and 2015, consisting of kissing, groping, flashing and rape.It is the first time the ONDRP, which publishes an annual study on insecurity, has actually focused on sexualon public transport.Paris was voted the 3rd most woman-friendly city in a Thomson Reuters Foundation survey published in October, and ranked 4th least risky for sexual violence. But harassment stays prevalent, many stated on social networks." I was spat at, called a slut ... and one early morning groped by two chuckling males on a congested city,"Siobhán Dowling stated on
Twitter, explaining her time in Paris as a student.
