Melos Kalpa — S-T (Hands in the Dark)

This self-titled album is likely Melos Kalpa’s first and last recording, since its founder, the London electronic composer Tom Relleen died four years ago, months rather than years after the basic tracks were recorded. His untimely death at 42 puts an end to an entrancing experiment, in which free-ranging, in-the-moment improvisation undergoes a kind of post hoc composition via electronic cutting and rearranging.

Both the players and their instruments are unusual. Ringleader Rellen plays a Buchla Music Easel, as well as more conventional bass, vibraphone and mellotron. His partner Marta Salogni takes on tape manipulation, commanding various decks: a Revox PR99 and two AKAI 4000DS Reel to Reel Tape Machines. David John Morris of Red River Dialect plays guitar, as you might expect, and a cuatro puertorriqueño, as you might not. Jem Doulton, who sometimes accompanies Thurston Moore and is a member of Too Many Things, shades these pieces subtly with percussion, adding marimba, vibraphone, drums and shakers. Agathe Max, of Abstract Concrete, Papivores and These Towns, adds strings, mandolin and vocals.

These cuts are textured delicately, nearly translucent in the layers of acoustic plunk and marimba clink and electronic blipping rhythms. “Motion Parallax” vibrates with contradictions, gypsy guitar lyricism, looming synthetic drones and the tonal rattle of malleted percussion. Tradition brushes up against space age mystery here; the cut is both firelit and futuristic. “Tanger” stalks tersely, on a staccato beat, organic sounds flitting in and out of its electronic architectures. It feels like a soundtrack to a rainy, nocturnal thriller, full of tension but morose and ruminative, too.

The album includes five tracks, four of them in the five-to-six-minute range, and one of them, “Melos Rhythm” taking up a full record side at just over 22 minutes. It’s here that Melos Kalpa’s world music, drone elements get the fullest airing, the string flourishes and cymbal rolls blooming as a guitar (or similar) keeps a one-note rhythm going. The rhythm repeats, picking up percussion and an electronic motif as it goes, but remaining fundamentally steady, and within it, all sorts of arcs and sweeps and flurries of sound jet by. It’s a lot like Natural Information Society, the way that the repetition locks you in and the flourishes set you free. Inspiration within discipline. Art in a puzzle box. Melos Kalpa is anchored and flying at the same time.

oh. uh. sorry.

but another reason why magic bullet faust isnt a thing is due to the parallels between outis and der freischütz. like how heathcliff's fell bullet parallels his ring and loss of cathy with der schütze's locket, der freischütz and outis ALSO have certain parallels, particularly with the shooting contest that serves as the inciting event of the fairy tale/opera. towards the end of the odyssey, as a final attempt to delay the suitors who have taken over while odysseus was gone, penelope proposes a shooting contest to decide who gets to marry her, one that is heavily rigged so only odysseus can win. similarly, the core event of der freischütz is the shooting contest for the hand of käthchen/agathe. in contrast to penelope's challenge though, the shooting contest in der freischütz is entirely fair, only for wilhelm/max to win it through underhanded means (i.e. der freikügeln). this also however draws another connection to outis, as finding a way to win by means of cheating the rules is her namesake's modus operandi.

Freikugel / フライクーゲル

Freikugel (JP: フライクーゲル; rōmaji: furaikūgeru) is the Hero's Relic tied to the Crest of Goneril. Rather than pulling from classic Norse and Germanic folklore, this axe references far more modern legends. The Freischütz, literally meaning "the free shooter" but often localized as "the marksman," refers to a man that made a deal with the devil. He is provided with a collection of magic bullets called Freikugeln (singular: Freikugel; lit. "free bullet") that will always strike their target. However, at least one of these bullets will be controlled by the devil, often causing the marksman's downfall. The earliest forms of this legend, traced to at least the late fifteenth century in Malleus Maleficarum in written form, had a man shoot a cross with an arrow in an attempt to gain three that he could guide when used. This would morph into the myth of forging bullets at night with the aid of witchcraft.

The most famous version of the story, written by Johann August Apel and Friedrich Laun, would be adapted into the opera Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber and Friedrich Kind. In the story, the forester Max needs to prove himself in marksmanship before the prince to take his beloved Agathe for a wife. His friend and senior forester Kaspar, who longs for Agathe but was rejected, shows Max in private the ability of his last Freikugel, swaying him to cast more bullets so he can guarantee his marriage. In truth, Kaspar sought revenge against Agathe and the dead of Max. When he convened with his forbidden connection of Samiel, he sold Max's soul for seven bullets and a promise that one of them would be dead the next day. Before they arrive at the ceremony, Max and Kaspar used six Freikugeln: only the devil's bullet remained. When that bullet was loosed, it struck Kaspar, leaving Max to reveal the sin they committed.

The reference to the Freischütz is likely meant to relate to the character of Hilda, the only character able to use it at full strength. After all, she's the type of girl to take the easy way out, and gets others to do things for her. By using Freikugeln, Max and Kaspar tried to take the easy way out, rather than actually proving themselves.

The combat art Apocalyptic Flame has a few layers to its name. Firstly, in invokes the concept of the apocalypse, the end of the world as we know it. Typically the word apocalypse invokes the Judeo-Christian interpretation of the world's conclusion. Most prominent of these is the Book of Revelation from the New Testament, an event often depicted with fire raining upon the earth (said to occur after the first of the seven trumpets is sounded). Interestingly, the events of Revelation are supposed to bring the end of the devil Satan and sin, despite the axe being named after what he has dominion over.

In Japanese, Apocalyptic Flame is called 劫火 (rōmaji: gōka). This is a term used in Buddhism and Hinduism to refer to the fire that destroys the world in those faiths' apocalypses. In both the Buddhist apocalypse and the Hindu Pralaya, after a kalpa or aeon (JP: 劫; rōmaji: kō)—a bit longer than four-billion years in Hinduism—feature the world engulfed in the heat of seven suns. For the Buddhists, those who survive the destruction of the earth are the faithful. According to Hinduism, all life on earth would die out in a hundred-year drought prior to the entire universe being set ablaze. After total destruction, the god Vishnu brings a century of rain to bring an end to the fires, and Brahma creates the universe anew. Additionally, the name 劫火 is pronounced similarly to the word 豪華 (rōmaji: gōka), which refers to a showy life of luxury, appropriate for Hilda's character.

I'm back with another aria! (Sorry, I think my opera singer is peeking through... actually no, I'm not sorry about that at all). You gave me permission to come at you with classical music, so here we are >:)

This one needs a translation, so this ask going to be rather long. Also, I feel like I should provide context, because it's too funny if you think about it long enough/too long.

So, the aria is Agathe's scene/aria "Wie nahte mir der Schlummer ... Leise, leise" from Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber. It’s in German, so here is my best attempt at a translation of the weird ass grammar in this aria (I'll add a short summary of the opera afterwards, there definitely is a 1941 thing going on here):

How did slumber approach me before I saw him.

Yes, love tends to go hand in hand with grief. Does the moon laugh (as in shine) over his path? What a beautiful night!

Softly, softly, my devout tune, fly up towards the circle of stars. Song, resound, celebrating my prayer may waft to the heavenly hall.

Oh, how bright the golden stars! With what pure light they glow! Only there, by the distant mountains, a storm seems to be brewing. There, by the forest, a host of dark clouds is floating, dull and heavy.

To you I turn my hands, Lord without beginning and without end. To protect us from dangers, send your angelic hosts!

Everything is at rest. Beloved friend, why do you delay? Even if my ear eagerly listens, only the pine is rustling. Only the birch's leaves in the grove whisper through the serene silence. Only nightingale and cricket seem to enjoy the night air.

But how? Is my ear not deceiving me? There, it sounds like footsteps, there from amidst the pines, something emerges - It's him! The flag of love may stream! Your girl is awake even in the night!

He doesn't seem to see me yet.

God, if the moonlight doesn't deceive me, flowers adorn his hat! Certainly! He did the best shot! That means good fortune for tomorrow!

Oh, sweet hope! Newly revived courage!

All my pulses beat, and the heart is beating brashly, sweetly delighted towards him!

Is it not deceit? Is it not delusion? Heaven, accept the tears of gratefulness for this favour of hope!

And here is the promised summary:

Agathe is the forester's daughter. She and Max are engaged, but he is only allowed to marry her if he wins a shooting contest to prove that he is capable of taking over her father's business. He's a good marksman, but lately, he's been too nervous to land his shots (yes, this opera can be read as a metaphor for erectile dysfunction. No, I did not make that up). So, he strikes a deal with a demon, Samael: he gets seven bullets that will always find their target.

The catch Samael doesn't tell him about: the first six will hit whatever Max wants them to. The seventh one though will hit what Samael chooses.

The next day, the day of the contest, arrives, and Max wins. With only one bullet left, he wants to shoot a dove in celebration. However, Samael chooses Agathe as his target. But, by the power of being a Good Girl (tm), she miraculously escapes (no, I did not make that up, either. She's literally too good and too pious to be hit by the devil's bullet. Also she got a blessing from a hermit).

In the end, the hermit appears and tells her dad to stop it with the contests, poor boy was so under pressure he literally couldn't shoot without help from the devil. And it was a dumb tradition, anyway.

Max and Agathe are allowed to marry, everyone's happy, the end.

The aria is set while Max is in the woods making his deal with Samael. Agathe sits at home, waiting for him, because he said he'd go practice and then come back and visit her.
