CHAPTER 30 - SIGN OF THE TIMES

Beneath him, Hermione was shaking, trying, as best as she could, to shove him away. 

“Shh”, he gently murmured to her, his voice slightly shaking, “it’s alright, it’s me.” His speech was rushed. 

At his voice, Hermione’s body slightly untensed and she looked up to him. He could hear rumbles in the background but he couldn’t care about anything else but her. 

With his right hand, Tom gently wiped the blood away from her eyes, letting his thumb delicately graze her cheeks. Hermione broke down, tears flooding from her eyes, but the sound coming from her was weak, broken. Tom carefully put his hand underneath her head, to coddle her against his chest when he felt a hot wetness on his fingers. Gingerly, he withdrew his hand and saw it covered in blood, fresh blood.

Hi! I remember reading a sad non-HEA tomione where Hermione dies, I think. They were neighbours and shared balconies and Tom still hears noise from her appartement, but it's just crooks. He thinks he's talking to Hermione but it's just her ghost or rather the memory of her since it was muggle au. The author had other tragic tomione works but I can't remember their title or the author's name. Does anyone know?

Then, Tom’s eyes met hers and it stopped, this feeling abruptly stopped. 

Suddenly, Edgard’s hand took hers to make her twirl on herself. She let herself go and felt a certain form of freedom as she spun around, her eyes closed. Hermione finally took back Edgard’s hand, only to open her eyes and see Tom’s face. She slightly frowned, not fully understanding how he found himself here. She looked to her right and saw Edgard dancing with Tom’s former partner. 

“Looks like it always ends up with you and I,” Tom said. Hermione didn’t reply to this, she simply smiled, amused.

Hermione finally arrived in front of where the book should be and stopped in her tracks when she saw it missing. She frowned.

“Looking for this ?”

Hermione refrained from smiling before turning around. Tom was leaning against the other bookshelf, the said book in his right hand. One strand of his hair was gently falling on his forehead, right above where his scar began. His eyes were warm, perfectly matching the cocky smile on his lips.

“Young must be quite dense if he needs this book in his seventh year,” he mocked.

“Be nice,” she nicely chastised him as she approached. She didn’t go for the book, well aware he would not give it to her. She just crossed her arms upon her chest and cocked an eyebrow. “Why are you here, Tom ?”

The walk back to the castle had never been this long, the silence was heavier by the second. Finally, they all reached the common room. Once the door opened, the lads flew to the dorm.

Grace was sitting on one of the couches and rose her head as she saw everyone stepping in. She must have felt the weird atmosphere as none of the lads looked at her or even said a word.

Tom finally walked towards her, sat on the couch, and stared at the fire.

“Do you have it ?” she asked in a soft voice.

“I do.”

“Did you have a pleasant night ?”

Tom then looked at her, at the tenderness in her eyes.

“I did,” he lied. Grace smiled.

He kept looking at her for a few more seconds before getting back to watching the fire.

She would never betray me, right ?

“How do we make this work then ?” He serenely asked. He had asked this question as if they were both in front of a political problem, as if they simply had to put both of their minds into the issue to find a well drafted solution. But they were not confronted with a political problem, this, right there, was so much messier than anything they had to take care of in the past.

“I don’t know,” she honestly replied.

“Well, we will have to figure it out. Because I am not letting this go, you go.”

There was only one person Hermione had been craving to talk to, only one person she would allow herself to cry in his arms. Harry. He might not understand what she had done, he might not want to look into her eyes if one day they would see each other again, but Hermione would know. She would know that everything she was planning to do was for him. She would know that she had lost herself to Tom only to find her way back for Harry.

It was well past three in the morning when Hermione tried to sneak back into the house. The large front door let out a small creak as she pushed it open. She winced at the sound and removed her heels. She gently closed the door behind her before laying back against it. She closed her eyes for a minute, trying to regain some control over her body. When she felt her head spinning less, she put one foot forward, then another one. She stopped and put her free hand against the nearest wall, trying to regain her balance back. Strangely, the walk back from the pub had not been this difficult. With her hand against the wall, she began slowly walking forwards. She couldn't help the smile growing on her lips at her own inability to walk properly.

She finally reached the staircase.

“Did you have a fun night ?”

Hermione startled and almost lost her balance as she turned around. Tom was standing a few feet away, at the junction between the hallway and the library. Hermione saw the faint glow of the chimney coming from inside the room and wondered how she had not seen it before.

She snorted at Tom’s question and turned back around to head to her room. Tom stopped her by the arm and dragged her back down the stairs.

Tom put his silverware down on his plate, withdrew the hand he had on her thigh before getting up. Hermione looked up as he slouched his bag over his shoulder. Before leaving the great hall, he bent behind her, for his lips to reach her ear. “Meet me at 5:30PM behind the old bakery in Hogsmeade.”

Hermione blood froze in her vein, her heart stopped in her chest and all air left her lungs. She dropped the toast she was holding and only blinked. She had known this moment would happen eventually, but every day Tom didn’t ask her, she still had a small hope he had changed his mind.

 “She’s not gonna come, she’s not gonna come,” Edmund was harshly whispering, panic evident in his voice, “we’re fucked.”

 They were all sitting at their usual spot at the Slytherin table for breakfast. The chair in front of Tom was empty as Grace had yet to show up.

 “Shut the fuck up,” Tom ordered. The boy stilled and looked at the prefect. Tom’s eyes had not moved away from the Great Hall door. “She is going to come.”

 He couldn’t say anything else, of course she was going to come, she couldn’t not. So why had Tom's leg been bouncing up and down for the past twenty minutes ?

 “What if-” Edgard started but Tom’s head snapped towards the boy.

 “What if what, Lestrange ?” Tom snapped. No one dared talk after this.

“I really need to know what is happening between you and Riddle, Grace.” Belone said. Hermione rolled her eyes and understood Tom must have been the one who had just left. 

“Once again Belone, nothing’s happening.” She sighed as she started writing the second roll. 

“Yeah sure.” Isodor snorted. 

“Shut up Avery.”

On the other side of the table, Abraxas loudly dropped his quill for the three of them to look at him. He shushed them. “No one cares about that.”

“I do.” Edgard chipped in, peeking out behind Abraxas. “Please resume the conversation.”
