The Bands of Monster Energy Aftershock 2017: Starset
Tumblr media
Not just a staple of the fall festival season, the Monster Energy Aftershock Festival -- produced by Danny Wimmer Presents – has become one of the most diverse festivals there is. Relying on hard rock and metal bands, it isn’t built exclusively around them, and intriguing variety of bands having been tapped to perform over the years, and those interesting pairings will continue as the festival gets ready for its sixth installment. Back at Discovery Park near downtown Sacramento, California, it’s probably the only festival where you’ll have a chance to see Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle on the same night. And those two are barely scratching the surface of the stellar lineup that has been assembled for this year. Upwards of three dozen bands are slated to perform over the course of the two-day festival, which will be taking place on Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd. From rock legends to a host of impressive bands on the rise, this will be THE festival every rock lover and metalhead needs to be at this year. If you can only make one, let it be Aftershock; and with it being just a few short months away, let’s take a look at some of the bands that are on tap to play… Starset has had a banner year thus far, releasing their sophomore record just a few weeks in to 2017, Vessels being the album that cemented them as one of the most promising up-and-coming bands currently out there. Well-written in regards to both the music and lyrics, it shows immense growth from where they started; the spacey themes and artful use of electronics in their brand of hard rock resulting in something rather unique. They solidified themselves as a band to watch with plenty of sold out shows on what was their first ever headline tour, from wowing a capacity crowd in their hometown of Columbus to a sold-out Trees in Dallas, Texas on a weeknight and many others. It was in that environment they truly got to shine, having ample time to work their magic, creating a near constant flow as they segued from one song to the next.
Fierce performers with that drive and hunger to become something grand, it was festivals like Aftershock that helped introduce Starset to people in the first place, winning over a slew of new fans that way just a couple of years ago. And now, armed with their new record and having had the chance to explore their depths as performers, finishing cutting their teeth and realizing what they’re actually capable of, Starset stands poised to blow minds come the fall. Event info: Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd at Discovery Park in Sacramento, CA. $94.50+

After coming off the road in late 2014, Gemini Syndrome’s creative core vocalist Aaron Nordstrom, drummer Brian Steele Medina and bass player Alessandro “AP” Paveri released their 2016 second full-length, Memento Mori, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and spawned the hit single “Remember We Die,” which hit #1 on SiriusXM Octane. The band spent the majority of 2016 and 2017 on the road with bands such as In This Moment, Motionless In White, Avatar, Sevendust, Starset and Drowning Pool and are now headlining their “Synner Conversion Tour” in Summer 2018.

2017 Monster Energy Aftershock Festival
Aftershock is often a term used to describe a tremor following a larger earthquake. In the case of Sacramento’s Aftershock Festival, perhaps it’s a metaphor for the fact that Aftershock tends to be on the tail end of the summer festival season. Or, reasonably, it could be employed here to represent the geological instability of the northern California region. I’m going to offer a third possibility. It’s the way you feel after having been emphatically rocked for a full weekend at Discovery Park in Sacramento on a late October weekend: still swaying, still in awe.
The Monster Energy Aftershock Festival brought 50,000+ music fans from all over the region and beyond to see some of the biggest names in Rock, Metal, and more. You couldn’t have asked for a better time to be in Sacramento. It was a sunny mid-70’s weekend with a gentle breeze blowing through to keep the smoke, dust, and heat at bay.
Saturday, Deap Vally was the first to throw down, opening things up on the Monster Energy main stage. The music kicked off at just after the lunch hour, but it didn’t seem that anyone was all that hungry, instead opting to see what Deap Vally was cooking. Each of the three stages brought some incredible local talent, followed by some of the biggest names to ever grace the marquee: Anti-Flag, Nothing More, Gojira and more. During the peak of the heat, Corey Taylor and his merry men of Stone Sour gave an incredible performance, leaving the stage drenched in sweat and each band member completely spent. Closing out the night would be two of the most legendary industrial rock bands to ever play. A Perfect Circle, with Maynard mysteriously shadowed at the back of the stage, introduced their new song, “The Doomed”. The Saturday Headliner, Trent Reznor and NIN gave us 90 minutes of hits as well as some deeper cuts from their very lengthy discography.
One performance that really stood out for me, and seemingly much of the Aftershock audience, was Tech N9ne. He hammered Aftershock with his midwest chopper-style flow and left the heaving, moshing crowd aching for more. One of the beautiful things about a festival like Aftershock is the opportunity to be exposed to things outside of your comfort zone. And sure, for many, a hip-hop artist at a rock festival didn’t quite mesh. But for the thousands that went to see him, mosh with him and show some love, it made perfect sense. I’m hoping he returns next year and they’ll give him a bigger stage and longer set.
[ngg_images source=”galleries” container_ids=”1179″ display_type=”photocrati-nextgen_pro_horizontal_filmstrip” image_crop=”0″ image_pan=”1″ show_playback_controls=”1″ show_captions=”0″ caption_class=caption_overlay_bottom” caption_height=”70″ aspect_ratio=”1.5″ width=”100″ width_unit=”%” transition=”fade” transition_speed=”1″ slideshow_speed=”5″ border_size=”0″ border_color=”#ffffff” override_thumbnail_settings=”1″ thumbnail_width=”120″ thumbnail_height=”90″ thumbnail_crop=”1″ ngg_triggers_display=”always” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]
On Sunday, the party just kept getting more intense. It’s as if everyone in attendance was there the night prior and still had copious volumes of adrenaline coursing through their veins. Unlike Saturday, the Sunday crowd was crowd-surfing and moshing in earnest right from the get go. Black Map had the honor of leading us off and it was game on from there. Sunday also happened to be the day for all the leading ladies to leave us absolutely destroyed. New Year’s Day came out with a vengeance. During their set, they even paid tribute to the metal gods, offering up their cover of Pantera’s “Fucking Hostile.” The Butcher Babies were a bit late getting their set kicked off due to technical issues with one of their microphones, but Heidi and Carla converted their frustration into intensity, leaving us all exhausted. Maria Brink and In This Moment put on an incredible performance as always, giving Sacramento a passionate, visually stunning and sensational vocal experience. Metal Goddess Lzzy Hale and Halestorm brought down the house on the Monster Energy main stage.
Also playing on Sunday were Starset, Beartooth, Hollywood Undead, Fozzy, and many others. Five Finger Death Punch gave us one of the most intense sets of the weekend leading up to Sunday’s headliner, the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne. Ivan Moody looked and sounded amazing and the band looked like a cohesive 5-man force for destruction. As is typical for 5FDP, Ivan brought several kids onto the stage before raining chaos onto the Sacramento crowd with “Burn MF.” Crowd-surfers were coming over the barrier in droves as security played hot-potato lowering each metalhead back down to earth. 5FDP played a set worthy of a headlining show.
But alas, there was one last performer this night. No stranger to headlining major festivals, the Ozz-man did what he does best. Discovery Park was standing room only, and it was nuts to butts from the barrier to the back – all the way back under the I-5 overpass and beyond. At the ripe old age of 68 earth years, moving a bit more cautiously than he did in his younger days, Ozzy sounded unmistakably Ozzy. With Zakk Wylde on the guitar, every note was metal perfection. Zakk did a guitar solo that simply cannot be matched by any other living guitar player, playing light speed licks behind his head or even shredding at 200+BPM while picking with his mouth! Un-fucking-believable! Tommy Clufetos on the drums, not to be outdone but a guitarist, did his own solo on the drums which defied physics. No drumkit rollercoasters or stick tricks, just flat out annihilation on those drums.
Festival organizers did a great job bringing in lots of food options. The layout between stages and vendors was well thought out. The mix of artists in attendence and set time schedules was awesome as well. My only suggestion would be to expand it to a third day, and we can all rock out for just another day longer. If you’re a West Coast resident, this is a festival you just CAN’T miss.

SHOW REVIEW: New Year's Day
Ash Costello and her friends in New Year’s Day ripped into the Goodyear Theatre in Akron, Ohio, on Tuesday, October 3, 2017. I think it’s safe to say that the place will never be the same. Supporting Starset and Halestorm on their Halloween Scream Tour, New Year’s Day quite literally kicked ass and took names.
Their seven-song set was an absolutely grinding gift to the metal gods. Ash, Nikki Misery (guitar), Jeremy Valentyne (guitar), Frankie Sil (bass), and Joshua Ingram (drums) mesmerized the audience, while their larger than life sound filled the theatre. If an artist could get a gold medal in crowd engagement, Ash Costello would have a neck full. Egging on the audience to get up on their feet, ordering them to scream and sing along with her, Ash commanded the stage in a way only she can. More than once she offered their performance, and the crowd’s enthusiasm, to the metal gods, and it’s safe to say that the gods were pleased. She even said so herself, and frankly, I think she’d be the first to know!
youtube
Not to be outdone by their front-woman, the rest of the band did exactly what they came to do – leave the crowd begging for more. The strings sung out while the drums drove the music forward. At times, they seemed to go a little quicker than they’d anticipated. However, they regrouped and came back together beautifully. It was apparent that they’re passionate about perfecting their craft and bringing their best to the stage. Their passion and drive is what captivates the crowds, while their high energy set and pulsing sound is what keeps people coming back for more.
On a personal note, after their set, Ash spent some time greeting fans who had come from far and wide to meet her. She was as gracious and generous as anyone I have ever witnessed. She took photos, talked tattoos, gave hugs, and greeted each fan with a smile and a “thank you so much for coming out.” To see her give those personal touches to everyone who wanted to meet her was something special for sure. Moments like those often get lost in the shuffle of the night. Being able to witness the fans coming away with a moment just for them made my little black punk rock heart grow a smidge in size. Ash Costello is a true metal goddess in every sense of the word.
New Year’s Day is rounding out this tour with Starset and Halestorm for the next few weeks, while also stopping in at Aftershock Festival on October 22nd. Don’t miss the chance to see them live!

Motograter release music video for new single "Dorian"
Tumblr media
Motograter have released the official music video for their latest single “Dorian” directed and produced by Christopher Davis (Human Twelve) who has also produced videos for bands like Dope and Angelspit. The track is taken from their sophomore album ‘Desolation’ released on Friday, August 11th, 2017 via EMP Label Group. “Dorian” has been continuously moving up the Billboard Mainstream Rock Indicator Chart, reaching #24 this week.
The music video for “Dorian” was recently filmed at the famous Ohio State Reformatory. The historic prison was built between 1886 and 1910 and remained in operation until 1990, when a United States Federal Court ruling (the ‘Boyd Consent Decree’) ordered the facility to be closed. While this facility was used in a number of films, TV shows and music videos, it was made famous by the film The Shawshank Redemption (1994) when it was used for the majority of the movie.
Motograter front man James Legion states, “This song is the first real single the band has released in many years. For it to be doing so well is really awesome. It was very interesting and fun to get to shoot the video for it in the Ohio State Reformatory. That place has so much character. We are very thankful to the staff for letting us stay all night and work.”
MOTOGRATER recently traveled to Mansfield Ohio to perform Ink In The Clink 2017, on the prison grounds, alongside Three Days Grace, Theory of a Dead Man, Gemini Syndrome, Starset, 10 Years, 40 Below Summer and many more. During the festival the band met up WITH Davis and shot the video for “Dorian” inside the creepy prison.
The band has made a documentary video of the experience which is included in the Motograter Tour Chronicles – Part 23 which can be viewed here:

About Gemini Syndrome:
Formed in 2010, the Los Angeles-based, GEMINI SYNDROME spent their formative days opening for bands on the Sunset Strip. As their reputation within the L.A. hard rock scene grew, so did their audience. their 2013 full-length debut Lux, which landed at #3 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart and yielded the singles “Pleasure & Pain” and “Stardust.” The record’s release saw the Los Angeles heavy alternative band tour alongside everybody from Five Finger Death Punch to Device and perform at festivals such as Rock on the Range, Welcome to Rockville, and more. After coming off the road in late 2014, Gemini Syndrome underwent member changes, while confronting and exorcising internal and external demons. However, its creative core vocalist Aaron Nordstrom, drummer Brian Steele Medina, and bass player Alessandro “AP” Paveri continue to move forward after the release of their 2016 second full-length, Memento Mori; which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, and spawned the hit single “Remember We Die” – which hit #1 on SiriusXM Octane. The band spent the majority of 2016 and 2017 on the road with bands such as In This Moment, Motionless In White, Avatar, Sevendust, Starset, and Drowning Pool.
