CHAPTER 8

Hero pov

As I hear the door click open, I also hear Evan say, "I like her; what's she doing with you," his laughter indicates that he's joking.

"Haha," I lightly smile as I rub my neck. "She does have a certain vibe about her; it's quite infectious" I watch as the door swings closed.

"So go after her, dude," he nudges my shoulder making me lightly stumble back.

"I don't think she wants me to. I feel like she wants to be friends, and I mean, I get it we haven't known each other for that long, but I don't know. I like being around her; she respects the whole privacy thing, she's content with talking or texting, and I feel like I can be myself around her. But maybe this is too much for her."

What is happening to me? I have liked girls before; I have even wanted girls before. I'm no saint by any means, respectful of course but her God, do I want her, but what about?...

"You don't know till you ask; Evan's words break my concentration, making me glance in his direction. "So go ask," he pushes me.

"Fine, but if I get rejected, it's your fault!" I say while heading towards the door.

"When has a girl ever said no to you?" he laughs, and I roll my eyes, pushing the door.

More than you know..

She couldn't have gone that far. I look around then I see her over by the benches.

"Everything okay?" I ask, sitting down.

"Yeah, I'm fine." She doesn't look up, which reminds me of the day I first saw her when she was upset.

"Jess, if I did something, you can tell me. I'd rather you tell me than not." I reach over to hold her hand, but she pulls away, her hands shaking.

"We should get back in there" she looks toward the building.

"Jess.." her eyes close as her name falls off of my lips as if it hurts her to hear it. "we have to be honest for this friendship to work" I swallow the bitterness in my mouth.

"I saw your face when Evan talked about going out, I know you want to go, and I don't want to be the reason why you don't," she says softly.

Standing up, I bend down in front of her, lifting her chin, "you're my friend too."

"But you haven't known me for that long, and this is your time off," she shrugs.

"I like what I know so far, and I choose how and who to spend my time with" I smile, which makes her blush, and then smile back. "You have a beautiful smile Jess" I start to lean in my face inches from hers.

"Thanks," she bites her lip, then pulls away, "so how about a compromise? What if you go skating, and I'll watch?" she says, raising an eyebrow. "Just try not to fall on your ass," she laughs.

"We don't have to," I say, trying to hide the sting of rejection as I stand up.

"Yes, we do, plus I'm already texting Kristen, so now you have no choice," she smiles, hitting send and locking her phone. "Ready to go back in?"

Should I ask her? She did pull away; if she felt the same way, wouldn't she have let me kiss her?

"Hero, you okay?" She asks.

"Yeah, I was just thinking about something" I look down at her.

"Is it about the whole skating thing? I promise I'm fine, it's what friends do they compromise, plus this means you owe me, Tiffin," she jokes.

"It's not that, Jessica" I sit back down on the bench.

"Wow, Jessica, so formal," her smile fades, "must be serious. We can talk about it if you want. Can I ask you something first, though?" Her voice is shakey, almost like she's afraid to hear the response.

"Yeah, of course" I look at her.

"You aren't breaking up with me, are you? I mean like friendship. I enjoy talking to you, and I know this situation isn't the easiest." She says, picking at her fingers.

Wait, she thinks I don't want to be friends anymore? If anything, I want to be more, so why would anyone not want or stop being friends with her? She's always thinking of others, but at the same time, she's headstrong; she will call you out on your shit in a heartbeat and is so humble that it's cute.

"No, Jessica, I'm not going to stop being friends with you. I wanted—"

"There you are" Evan breaks in. "I was beginning to think you two left." He walks up, sitting down next to me.

"No, Hero was just telling me something" she looks at Evan then back at me.

"It can wait. Did Kristen text you back?" I ask quickly, changing the subject. She gives me a confused look.

"Um yeah, she said she'll take us; I told her she could come with Stella if she wants; I hope that's okay, Evan."

"Yeah, that's fine; give us like 15 minutes, and we'll be headed over there," he says, standing up and heading back towards the building again.

"I'm going to go ahead and tell Kristen so she can start back this way" she looks at me while heading towards the parking lot. I nod, getting up to follow her.
