In Kenya, Martial Eagles Hunt Lion Cubs For Lunch
Martial eagles, with wingspans that can exceed six feet, can take out young impalas or gazelles. Recently, researchers have seen them targeting another species’ young.
— By Joshua Rapp Learn | October 3, 2024

Martial Eagles (One Shown in Serengeti National Park) Occasionally Hunt Lion Cubs, New Rsearch Shows. Photograph By Klaus Nigge, National Geographic Image Collection
In December 2012, tour guides in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve witnessed a series of killings targeting one of the savannah’s top predators. An adult martial eagle followed a pride of lions for weeks, waiting for the right time to swoop in and kill three cubs in total.
“This is an eagle really looking at these lions and thinking, ‘I’m going to systematically hunt these lions,’” says R. Stratton Hatfield, a Ph.D. candidate at Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands.

A Juvenile Martial Eagle snatched this three-week-old lion cub on March 15, 2019, in the Mara North Conservancy, Kenya. No one saw the bird kill the cub. Based on the fledgling eagle's behavior, researchers suspect that an adult female gave the cub to the fledgling. Photograph By Jes Lefcourt
While the supposed kings of the jungle may dominate the land around them, this incident and others like it show that African lions (Panthera leo) may not always sit on top of the food chain when it comes to the skies. In fact, martial eagles (Polemaetus bellicosus) likely prey on lion cubs when the opportunity arises, Hatfield and his colleagues recently reported in Ecology and Evolution.
“It’s really a testament to the predatory nature of martial eagles,” Hatfield says.
Queen of the Skies
Martial eagles’ wingspans can exceed six feet. Adult females weigh more than 10 pounds, while adult males typically weigh around seven pounds. Though comparable in size and ecology to golden eagles, the species often kills larger prey. The birds swoop in and dig their razor-like talons into their prey’s spine at the back of their skull, sometimes taking out young impalas or gazelles far above their weight class. “[Their talons] are just massive killing utensils,” Hatfield says. “From a predator perspective, they are impressive in what they’re able to do.”
Hatfield’s team only recently realized the birds also preyed on other predators. The team collected seven records, including the 2012 incident, that describe martial eagles preying on lion cubs, resulting in the deaths of nine cubs and one near miss. Most of these episodes probably involve larger females, Hatfield suspects, though two records included juveniles preying on cubs.
The earliest case comes from 2008, when a photographer captured an image of an eagle feeding on a freshly killed cub, while the most recent was in 2023, when a safari guide saw a juvenile eagle hunt and kill a cub large enough that the raptor couldn’t fly off with it.
Risk Versus Reward
Despite their aerial antics, martial eagles are typically risk averse. “When they go to take a lion cub, it’s with a lot of recognition of the risks,” Hatfield says. But not all records seem to show this careful calculation.
In the one failed killing, a martial eagle swoops in to snatch a six-week-old cub right next to its mother. The lioness spots the approaching danger, and “literally leaps in the air to try to take the martial out of the sky,” Hatfield describes. “You can just see the lioness’s eyes lock onto something, then she crouches and launches.”
The eagle dodged the counterattack, and didn’t get the cub, but the whole maneuver “was just stupid.” Hatfield speculates that the raptor didn’t see the lioness. Episodes like this are so dangerous for the eagle, “you wonder if they are doing something ever just for fun,” he says.
Amy Dickman, a conservation biologist at Oxford University in the U.K., isn’t surprised that eagles will go after cubs again and again if the strategy proves successful. She also leads Lion Landscapes, a nonprofit focused on coexistence of humans and wildlife in Kenya and Tanzania, and says the conclusions of Hatfield’s team “seem sound.”
As far as the lions are concerned, “it’s just another kind of risk that lions have to deal with,” Dickman says, like predation from hyenas or male lions from competing prides. While she doesn’t think the eagles pose a conservation threat to the big cats, an individual pride in a given area might feel pressure if a martial eagle has honed in on their cubs as a food source. “It shows you how interesting and diverse the natural world is,” Dickman says.
Predators or Prey?
Martial eagles aren’t picky when it comes to big cats. Some have taken cheetah and leopard kittens, as well. Hatfield also notes the risk probably goes both ways—lions could and probably have hunted adult eagles or nests. At least one YouTube video shows a leopard killing a martial eagle.
“The relationships between top predators at the top of the [food] pyramid are complicated,” Hatfield says.
Martial eagles are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and Hatfield hopes that studies like this bring more attention to their plight. Like other large raptors in Africa, the species faces habitat loss, poaching for parts, electrocution on power lines and persecution.
“We are all so focused on the elephant and lion and rhino,” Hatfield says. “A lot of these big eagles and vultures are going to go extinct right in front of our eyes.”

Regina Mills is trapped in a life she never wanted. At 33, she works tirelessly for her mother, Cora, at the family’s powerful company—a position she loathes but feels obligated to uphold. Her relationship with her mother is strained at best, and her thoughts often drift to the father she hasn't seen in 28 years. Henry Mills, her beloved father, disappeared from her life when Cora took her away after their bitter divorce. He left for South Africa, where he built a new life running a safari, and she hasn't heard from him since.
One day, Regina receives an unexpected letter from a South African lawyer. Her father has passed away, leaving her his pride and joy: the safari. The news shakes her to the core. Despite the anger and resentment she feels for being abandoned, something compels her to pack her bags and head to South Africa.
Upon arrival, she is greeted by the wild beauty of the African savannah—a stark contrast to the cold, sterile world she's used to. But as soon as she steps foot on the safari, she clashes with Emma Swan, a fiercely independent and stubborn worker who has been with the safari for years. Emma isn't thrilled about Regina's sudden appearance, and they quickly butt heads over how things should be run.
As the days pass, Regina begins to uncover secrets about her father and herself that she never imagined. Meanwhile, despite their initial animosity, the chemistry between Regina and Emma becomes undeniable. Sparks fly, and beneath the tension, an unexpected bond forms.
But with Cora trying to pull Regina back into the corporate world and Emma wrestling with her own past, they’ll need to navigate more than just the wild terrain to find a path forward—both for the safari and for themselves. Will they give in to the passion growing between them, or will their differences tear them apart before they even begin?

Ultimate 3-Day Safari Adventure | A Perfect Short Getaway into the Wild

A safari doesn’t have to be weeks long to be extraordinary. In just three days, you can witness the raw beauty of nature, come face-to-face with Africa’s most iconic wildlife, and experience the thrill of the untamed wilderness. A well-planned 3-day safari offers the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation, making it ideal for those who want a taste of the wild without taking too much time off. Whether you're a first-time traveler or a seasoned safari-goer, these three days promise memories that last a lifetime.
Day 1 – Arrival & First Game Drive
The journey begins with an exciting arrival at your safari destination. Whether you're flying into a remote airstrip or driving through the rugged landscapes leading to the national park, the thrill of the unknown sets in. After settling into a cozy safari lodge or luxury-tented camp, it’s time for your first game drive. As you venture into the wilderness, expect to see majestic elephants roaming freely, giraffes gracefully moving across the plains, and, if luck is on your side, a pride of lions basking under the African sun. As the golden hues of sunset bathe the landscape, your first evening ends with a delicious bush dinner under the stars, with the distant sounds of nature serenading the night.
Day 2 – Full-Day Safari & Unique Experiences
An early wake-up call leads to one of the best moments of any safari—a sunrise game drive. This is the prime time for spotting predators on the move before the heat of the day sets in. Leopards return from a night of hunting, cheetahs scan the horizon, and herds of antelope graze peacefully. After a hearty bush breakfast, you can opt for unique experiences such as a walking safari, where expert guides take you closer to nature, or a boat safari, gliding past hippos and crocodiles. For a cultural touch, visiting a local village provides insight into the rich traditions of indigenous communities. The day ends with a sundowner at a scenic spot, celebrating the magic of the African wilderness.

Day 3 – Sunrise Safari & Farewell to the Wild
The final morning brings one last chance to soak in the beauty of the wild. Another early game drive offers a different perspective—perhaps a lion cub playfully chasing its siblings or a massive herd of buffalo moving in unison. A peaceful breakfast in the wild provides the perfect setting to reflect on the journey before heading back to civilization. As you drive out of the park, every turn holds a memory—a final glimpse of an elephant waving its trunk or a bird soaring across the endless sky. Though short, the experience leaves an everlasting imprint, igniting a longing to return.
Making the Most of Your 3-Day Safari
A 3-day safari is proof that incredible wildlife adventures don’t require weeks of travel. Choosing the right destination, season, and accommodations can elevate your experience, ensuring you make the most of your time in the wild. Whether it's the thrill of spotting the Big Five, the serenity of watching a sunrise over the savannah, or the cultural richness of meeting local communities, every moment is special. So, if you’ve been dreaming of a safari but think time is a limitation—think again. The adventure of a lifetime might just be three days away.

I turned 30 being surrounded by strangers in a foreign country halfway across the world.
I’m going through all my pictures and I can’t believe half of the things I got to experience out there. 4 African countries, 6 safari drives, 1 walking safari tour, zip lining from Zambia to Zimbabwe, flying in a helicopter for the first time, camping in the middle of the bush & having a night out in one of the most dangerous cities in South Africa.
This trip was unforgettable. I’m so glad I did it. Being surrounded by other adventurous souls made me realize how much I love & missed traveling, not vacationing. I feel realigned & ready for this new era. I’m already planning my next adventure. 🥰🫶🏼🇿🇦🇿🇼🇿🇲🇧🇼

You can experience your adventure through the mountains or while travelling along the sandy beaches.
Brimstone Hall Fortress National Park: This is a site of historical, cultural and architectural significance. This centuries-old citadel is a monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it and to the skill and strength of the African slaves who built it on the steep at the risk and probable loss of lives. The walls are predominantly made of stone, painstakingly carved from Brimstone Hill’s hard volcanic rock. The mortar was produced from the limestone that covers much of the middle and lower slopes. Begun in the 1690s, the fortress finally took shape as a complete military community in the 1790s. This prominent citadel is one of the earliest and finest surviving examples of a new style of fortification known as the polygonal system.
South Frigate Beach: Here you will find the most action-packed strip of beach on the Caribbean Sea. And here the party goes on until the wee hours of the morning. This one-mile stretch of white-sand beach, is ideal for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing and various other water sports. It is also lined with various types of beach shacks - island bars that serve drinks, food, craft, and trinkets in an atmosphere infused with infectious Caribbean rhythm.
Kindred Spirits: Carry a collection of St. Kitts’ famous cocktails in your pocket. Designed for rum experts and enthusiasts. Your three-hour itinerary begins at 10:00 am. Once you’re in the good company of your chosen adventure buddies and soon-to-be Kittitian RumMaster, settle in for the day ahead and prepare to dive deep into one of St. Kitts’ most celebrated cultural excursions that includes a tour of our distillery and spice mill.

Consider Liamuiga Natural Farms your retreat. Visitors will be touring a fully operational coffee and citrus farm. Visitors can expect the peace and tranquility that comes from being over 1500 feet above sea level in St. Kitts’ mountains.
Paint & Sip: This paint and sip experience allows everyone to paint their very own custom masterpiece on a 9in x 12in canvas, as they sip on wine, provided by us, and have a great time! Farewell For Roosevelt From His Solicitous Friends
March 23, 1909
A large group advise Theodore Roosevelt on his Africa trip. Wall Street offers a safety razor, John D. Rockefeller says "Take along some tracts for the natives lest they destroy you!" Tillman says "Theodore do be careful not to fall into the hands of the fierce chiefs of the jungle but come back to us." Harriman says "Remember Teddy that that terrible gun is loaded." Pulitzer says "Beware the Tse-tse fly Teddy my boy." Nature Faker says "Oh, do avoid the terrible cinconidae my dear Mr. Roosevelt. Ananias Club says "Don't contradict the Lion's T.R." Uncle Joe Cannon says "No Quarrel with the elephants." Foraker says "Nor anger the colored brethren." William Jennings Bryan says "Take care of yourself for my sake T.R., won't you?"
All of these were Roosevelt's political rivals and enemies. He was leaving for an African safari that day.

Am I Guaranteed to See Gorillas in Uganda?

Travel company: Dav safaris
Website: www.davsafaris.com
Email: [email protected]
Am I Guaranteed to See Gorillas in Uganda? Yes this because Uganda is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas with over 460 gorillas, and the chances of spotting them are incredibly high—over 95%. The country’s strict conservation efforts and expert tracking teams make it one of the best places to see gorillas in Uganda in the wild.
If you're wondering whether you're guaranteed to see gorillas in Uganda, the answer is yes though nothing in nature is 100% certain but Uganda offers one of the highest success rates in the world, with over 95% of treks resulting in unforgettable experience. Thanks to expert trackers who monitor the gorilla families daily, limited permits ensuring minimal disturbance, and the gorillas' predictable movement patterns within Bwindi and Mgahinga's dense forests, your chances are excellent. The rare cases where visitors don't see them usually involve extreme weather or the gorillas briefly wandering across the Congolese border—but even then, most operators offer a second attempt or partial refund. So while "guaranteed" isn't quite the right word, booking with a reputable company and preparing properly means you're as close to certain as wildlife experiences get.
Why see gorillas in Uganda?
Uganda stands out because of its well-protected gorilla populations and well-organized tourism system compared to other destinations, Uganda allows more time (one full hour) with the gorillas once you find them. The country has two main parks where you can see gorillas in Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both offer unique experiences, but Bwindi has more gorilla families, increasing your chances to see gorillas in Uganda.
Best Destinations to See Gorillas in Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the top spot to see gorillas in Uganda, hosting 21 habituated gorilla families and four sectors such as Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo—each offering different trekking difficulties. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one habituated family, making it less crowded. If you want higher certainty to see gorillas in Uganda, Bwindi is the better choice.
How to Get There to See Gorillas in Uganda
Most travelers fly into Entebbe International Airport, then take a domestic flight to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips—the closest to gorilla trekking areas. From there, it’s a short drive to the parks. Road trips from Kampala take 8-10 hours but offer scenic views. If you prefer convenience, flying saves time and energy, helping you arrive fresh to see gorillas in Uganda.
Best Time to See Gorillas in Uganda
The dry seasons (June-August and December-February) are ideal to see gorillas in Uganda because trails are less muddy. However, gorilla trekking happens year-round, and even in wet months (March-May, September-November), sightings are still likely. Temperatures stay mild (15-25°C), but rain gear is essential—forest weather changes fast.
Cost of Gorilla Permits & Physical Requirements
A gorilla permit in Uganda costs $800for foreign nonresidents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. Treks can last 2-8 hours, depending on gorilla’s movements, so good fitness helps. You’ll hike steep, slippery terrain at high altitude—training with uphill walks beforehand makes it easier to see gorillas in Uganda.
What to Wear to See Gorillas in Uganda
Sturdy hiking boots (waterproof if possible), long-sleeved shirts, and thick pants protect against stinging nettles. Gloves and a hat are useful, and a rain jacket is a must—even in dry season. Neutral colors (green, brown) blend into the forest, helping you see gorillas in Uganda without disturbing them.
Where to Sleep to See Gorillas in Uganda
For luxury, stay at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (Bwindi). Mid-range options include Gorilla Mist Camp (Rushaga), and budget travelers love Buhoma Community Rest Camp. All are near trekking start points, so you wake up ready to see gorillas in Uganda.
Book to See Gorillas in Uganda with Dav Safaris
Planning a gorilla trip is easier with local experts. Dav Safaris handles permits, transport, and lodging, ensuring you don’t miss the chance to see gorillas in Uganda. They know the best routes and timings, taking the stress out of your adventure.

Are luxury safaris worth the cost? Learn how to get the most out of an exclusive safari adventure and find out how to make it more affordable without sacrificing quality. Luxury safaris represent the pinnacle of travel indulgence, blending breathtaking wildlife experiences with world-class accommodations and personalized service. For travelers considering whether the cost of such adventures is justified, understanding the unique benefits of these exclusive experiences is essential. This article explores why luxury African safaris are worth the investment, providing insights into private safari experiences, high-end accommodations, and curated adventures that combine luxury with nature. Why Luxury Safaris Command a Premium Price: Are Luxury Safaris Worth the Cost? Luxury African safaris command a premium price, yet this investment is justified by the exceptional and exclusive experiences they provide. Unlike traditional safaris, luxury options are designed to prioritize comfort, exclusivity, and customization. From the moment you arrive, every detail is tailored to your preferences, ensuring a seamless and unforgettable journey. Unmatched Accommodations and Services At the heart of luxury safaris are exclusive safari lodges and high-end camps, offering exquisite comfort in the wilderness. These properties, such as those in the Serengeti or the Selous Game Reserve, blend opulence with sustainability. Think infinity pools overlooking vast savannahs, gourmet dining under the stars, and suites with private plunge pools and personal butlers. Such accommodations redefine how travelers experience the African safari, creating a balance between nature and indulgence. Fly camping in Tanzania, for instance, offers a unique combination of rustic adventure and luxurious exclusivity. These mobile camps are set up in remote locations, allowing guests to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying exceptional service and amenities. For those seeking a more refined experience, Serengeti balloon safaris elevate the adventure by providing a bird’s-eye view of the Great Wildebeest Migration, followed by a champagne breakfast on the plains. Private Safari Experiences Is an African safari worth it or hype? Privacy is a hallmark of luxury safaris. Customized private tours ensure travelers have exclusive access to guides, vehicles, and itineraries tailored to their interests. Whether it’s tracking the Big Five or exploring remote areas in a private jeep, these experiences allow for an intimate connection with the wilderness. For wildlife enthusiasts, Big cat safaris focus on encounters with lions, leopards, and cheetahs in their natural habitats. Guided by expert trackers, guests enjoy the flexibility to spend extended time observing these majestic predators, a privilege seldom afforded on group tours. The Value of Curated Experiences Luxury travel experiences transcend wildlife safaris, integrating cultural immersion, adventure, and relaxation into a cohesive journey. Travelers can combine their safari adventures with bespoke activities across Africa’s diverse landscapes. Beyond Wildlife: Cultural and Coastal Connections A luxury African safari can seamlessly transition into a Zanzibar beach holiday or a Mozambique snorkeling experience, offering the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Zanzibar’s pristine beaches, coupled with its rich cultural heritage, create an idyllic post-safari retreat. Meanwhile, Mozambique’s crystal-clear waters invite guests to explore vibrant coral reefs and marine life, providing a completely different perspective of Africa’s natural beauty. For a more immersive experience, unique cultural immersions allow guests to connect with local communities. Visiting Maasai villages or exploring the Swahili Coast’s historical sites enriches the journey, offering insights into Africa’s diverse heritage. High-End Safari Destinations Africa’s luxury safari circuit includes iconic locations such as Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Botswana’s Okavango Delta, and South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Each destination offers something unique: the drama of the Great Wildebeest Migration, the serenity of water-based safaris in the delta, or the exclusivity of private game reserves in South Africa. For the discerning traveler, private conservancies and lodges within these regions provide unparalleled access to wildlife and landscapes. The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania, for example, combines adventure with exclusivity, offering fewer crowds and the chance to explore remote areas by boat, on foot, or by jeep. Exclusive Cruise Adventures and Beyond Luxury safari experiences aren’t confined to land. Exclusive cruise adventures along Africa’s rivers and lakes, such as a private voyage on the Zambezi River, provide a new way to appreciate the continent’s natural wonders. These cruises often include excursions to view wildlife or visit nearby cultural sites, adding depth to the travel experience. A Global Perspective on Luxury Travel While Africa is a standout destination for high-end safaris, the principles of luxury travel extend globally. Travelers who appreciate bespoke journeys can explore Europe’s historic cities, Asia’s cultural treasures, or the Americas’ natural wonders through customized private tours. For example, pairing a luxury African safari with a Mediterranean yacht charter or an Asian cultural immersion creates a broader tapestry of high-end travel experiences. Why Invest in a Luxury Safari? The question remains: Is a luxury safari worth the cost? The answer lies in the value of the experience. Beyond the tangible benefits—such as exquisite accommodations, gourmet meals, and private tours—luxury safaris offer something intangible: the chance to connect with nature and oneself in profound ways. Personalized Attention and Expertise Luxury safaris provide access to some of the most knowledgeable guides and trackers in the industry. Their expertise transforms each game drive into an educational journey, deepening your understanding of Africa’s ecosystems. Moreover, personal attention ensures your interests, from photography to conservation, are prioritized throughout the trip. Unique Memories and Experiences Luxury safaris provide unforgettable moments that are hard to replicate elsewhere. Witnessing a lion’s hunt during a Big cat safari, floating over the Serengeti at sunrise, or enjoying a private dinner under the stars are experiences that leave a lasting impression. These moments justify the investment, as they create memories that are priceless. Conservation and Community Impact A significant portion of the cost of a luxury safari often supports conservation initiatives and local communities. By choosing exclusive lodges and private reserves, travelers contribute to preserving Africa’s wildlife and empowering local populations. This ethical dimension adds further value, making luxury safaris a responsible choice for those seeking meaningful travel experiences. How Can We Make Luxury African Safaris Affordable Today? Luxury African safaris are often perceived as exclusive, high-cost experiences. While they offer an unparalleled adventure, the expense is a barrier for many travelers. Understanding why safaris are generally more expensive than other holidays can provide valuable insight into how to make them more affordable. This knowledge, combined with strategic planning, can help travelers find a way to experience the luxury of an African safari without breaking the bank. Why Are Safaris Generally More Expensive Than Many Other Holidays? A few factors drive up the cost of safaris. First, the logistics involved in organizing safari tours in remote and often protected wildlife areas drive up the price. Safaris typically require specialized vehicles, professional guides, and the support of local staff, all of which contribute to the operational costs. Additionally, the accommodations are often luxurious, offering a high level of comfort and exclusivity, which increases the overall expense. Conservation fees, park entry fees, and the price of maintaining and protecting wildlife reserves also contribute to the higher cost of safari holidays. These elements combine to create an experience that, while extraordinary, is inherently expensive. However, several strategies can be employed to make luxury African safaris more accessible without compromising the quality of the experience. By leveraging these tactics, savvy travelers can enjoy an exceptional safari experience at a reduced cost. 1. Travel Outside of Peak Season One of the most effective ways to make a luxury African safari more affordable is by choosing to travel outside the peak season. Safaris are typically most expensive during peak tourist periods, such as the dry season (from June to October), when wildlife is easier to spot and the demand for safari lodges and tours is at its highest. By traveling during the shoulder or green seasons, typically from November to May, travelers can take advantage of lower rates. During these times, safari operators offer discounts, and accommodations are less expensive due to the reduced demand. Additionally, wildlife sightings during the green season can be equally impressive, as the lush environment provides a different yet captivating perspective of the African landscape. 2. Get Off the Beaten Track Another strategy for making a luxury safari more affordable is to venture off the beaten track. Popular safari destinations such as the Serengeti in Tanzania, Maasai Mara in Kenya, or Kruger National Park in South Africa can be more expensive due to their notoriety and high visitor numbers. While these iconic destinations offer outstanding experiences, lesser-known parks and reserves offer equally rewarding adventures at a fraction of the cost. Exploring more remote and less frequented areas allows travelers to experience a unique safari while avoiding the premium prices associated with mainstream destinations. Areas such as Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park or Botswana’s lesser-known reserves provide top-tier experiences without inflated prices. 3. Take Advantage of Travel Deals Many safari operators and travel companies offer deals and discounts throughout the year. These promotions often include package deals, last-minute discounts, or special offers for early bookings. Signing up for newsletters, following social media accounts, and joining loyalty programs of safari operators can alert travelers to time-sensitive discounts. Taking advantage of these deals allows travelers to enjoy the luxury of a safari experience while benefiting from reduced costs. Additionally, some tour operators offer group rates, which can make booking a luxury safari more affordable when traveling with a group. 4. Get Familiar with Lodge Classing Understanding the different lodge classifications is crucial in planning an affordable safari. Many luxury safari lodges offer multiple categories of rooms, and not all of them come with the same price tag. Travelers can reduce costs by opting for slightly more modest accommodations without sacrificing the overall safari experience. For example, choosing a tented camp or a classic safari lodge rather than a luxury suite in an exclusive lodge can provide an equally comfortable stay at a lower price. Familiarizing oneself with lodge types and knowing the trade-offs between luxury and cost will allow travelers to make more informed decisions that align with their budget. 5. Select the Luxury of Experience When booking a luxury safari, it’s essential to focus on the experience rather than the facilities alone. Many safari travelers value intimate, personalized experiences, such as private game drives, guided bush walks, and immersive cultural experiences. Selecting a safari that prioritizes these elements—rather than opting for a more expensive lodge with extensive amenities—can provide a more cost-effective yet still luxurious experience. Working with a local expert can help identify experiences that are unique, and enriching, and provide the luxury travelers desire, without inflating the price. 6. Use the Advice of a Local Travel Expert The advice of a local travel expert can be invaluable in planning an affordable luxury safari. Local experts are familiar with the intricacies of the safari industry and can provide recommendations on how to balance cost with experience. They can help travelers find the best deals, recommend off-the-beaten-path locations, and suggest local lodges that offer great value for money. By working with a local guide or travel planner, travelers can ensure that they’re getting the most out of their budget while enjoying a high-quality safari experience. Takeaway: Making a luxury African safari affordable is not only possible but also within reach for many travelers. By planning ahead, traveling during off-peak times, exploring lesser-known destinations, leveraging special deals, and understanding the dynamics of safari pricing, travelers can experience the luxury of an African safari without the hefty price tag. By focusing on the unique experiences rather than just the accommodations and following the advice of local experts, travelers can enjoy a safari that is both luxurious and affordable. Are Luxury Safaris Worth the Cost? FAQs How much does a luxury safari cost per person?A luxury safari typically costs between $500 and $2,500 per person per day, depending on the destination and accommodation. Luxury gorilla safaris can range from $3,000 to $10,000 per person, including permits, exclusive lodges, and guided experiences. Are budget safaris worth it?Budget safaris can offer a fulfilling experience with the right planning and guide, but the overall experience often depends on what you value—luxury or adventure. Ultimately, both luxury and budget safaris can provide unique, memorable encounters with nature. Why are African safaris so expensive?African safaris are expensive due to the high costs of conservation, exclusive access to wildlife reserves, and the need for experienced guides and luxury accommodations. Additionally, the demand for unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences drives up prices. Conclusion Luxury African safaris epitomize the best of travel, combining extraordinary wildlife encounters with indulgent accommodations, tailored service, and meaningful cultural exchanges. Tangalle
I've been taking it easy in Tangalle. In part because it's pretty hot in the sun and away from the shore.
I walked downtown to find an ATM. Most of the restaurants here are small and don't take credit cards, and I suspect the rest of the trip will be the same. I looked at my future stays, and it appears there should be more ATMs nearby, so I don't think I will need to worry about cash.
As I was walking through town, the local schools got out. There is a large girls' school, and many girls are standing along the road waiting for buses.

The evening view of the shore from my balcony is nice.

Several national parks are within an hour or so of here. I was scheduled to visit Lunugamvehera National Park this morning, but the roads there are flooded, so I went to Udawalawe National Park instead. One advantage of Lunugamvehera is that it is supposed to be less crowded. That was definitely not the case with Udawalawe.

Seeing this long line of tourist trucks ahead of us was disheartening. But I soon saw the problem. This group of elephants were calmly standing in the road blocking all traffic.

It took quite a while for them to decide to mosey off into the woods.
One thing I have liked about safaris is the chance to see birds. My detail vision is poor, and I'm red-colorblind, so most of the time, birds are just spots flying through the sky. Previously, I had brought my super-zoom camera, which is great for wildlife, but I decided not to carry it for a month for a 3-hour excursion. So my photos here are not the best, but the longer telephoto of the new iPhone helped.
The red-wattle lapwings got close enough.

As did this Kingfisher and this green bee-eater.

And this Red Jungle Fowl. My guide was careful to say it wasn't a chicken, but clearly, chickens are descended from them. As a note, the Red Jungle Fowl is the national bird of Sri Lanka.

There are peacocks all over.

A couple were displaying as we went past.

The peahens tended to be in the woods, where they were more challenging to see, but I assume they were there.
On the tollway down here, there was a huge sign warning drivers of peacocks on the road.
Other traffic jams were caused by huge troops of macaque monkeys.

These are just a few of the troop; I estimate there were over 100.
One crocodile was in the distance, so it was a poor photo.

More elephants, including these two males, were doing a slow face-off on the road. We eventually just turned around.

We ended with a large herd of Sri Lankan Axis deer.

I was surprised that they were all spotted, like an American fawn.

The safari was not as exciting as an African one, but interesting. After the first group of elephants blocking the road, the vehicles dispersed in various directions, so congestion was not an issue.
Tomorrow, I have another driver taking me up into the central highlands. My first stop there will be in Ella.

Tanzania Safari Price - How Much Does a Safari in Tanzania Cost?
Have you ever wished you could go on a holiday in Tanzania? It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows you to witness some of the most incredible wildlife on the planet. But understanding the Tanzania Safari Cost is key to planning your adventure effectively.
The cost of a Tanzania safari depends on several factors, such as the length of your trip, the type of accommodation you choose, and the activities you include in your itinerary. On average, you can expect to spend between $200 and $1,000 per person per day.
As you get ready to explore Tanzania's breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife, let’s take a closer look at the factors that influence safari costs and how they shape your overall experience. Planning wisely can help you make the most of your trip without compromising on quality.
Accommodation: The choice between basic camping, mid-range lodges, or luxurious tented camps significantly impacts overall expenses. Upgrading to more luxurious options often increases the cost.
Transportation: Different transport options, such as shared group tours or private vehicles, vary in cost. Additionally, choosing to fly or drive between parks affects the budget due to differences in time and convenience.
Park Fees and Permits: Tanzania's national parks have entry fees, which can vary depending on the location. The number of parks you visit and activities like guided walks or specialized safaris requiring separate permits contribute to the total cost.
Seasonal Variations: Timing your safari influences prices. Peak seasons, coinciding with the dry months and the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration, often mean higher rates due to increased demand. Alternatively, the rainy season might offer reduced prices, but wildlife sightings could be limited.
Guide and Tour Operator Costs: A knowledgeable guide significantly enhances the safari experience. Guides and tour operators with better reputations and services usually come at higher costs.
Additional Expenses: Consider other costs like meals (if not included), drinks, gratuities, and optional activities that might add to the total cost.
Understanding these price factors allows for better planning and budgeting for a Tanzania Safari. By researching, comparing different packages, and being clear about what is included, one can strike a balance between cost and a fulfilling safari adventure amidst Tanzania's stunning landscapes and wildlife.
