In Kenya, Martial Eagles Hunt Lion Cubs For Lunch
Martial eagles, with wingspans that can exceed six feet, can take out young impalas or gazelles. Recently, researchers have seen them targeting another species’ young.

In December 2012, tour guides in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve witnessed a series of killings targeting one of the savannah’s top predators. An adult martial eagle followed a pride of lions for weeks, waiting for the right time to swoop in and kill three cubs in total.
“This is an eagle really looking at these lions and thinking, ‘I’m going to systematically hunt these lions,’” says R. Stratton Hatfield, a Ph.D. candidate at Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands.
Tumblr media
A Juvenile Martial Eagle snatched this three-week-old lion cub on March 15, 2019, in the Mara North Conservancy, Kenya. No one saw the bird kill the cub. Based on the fledgling eagle's behavior, researchers suspect that an adult female gave the cub to the fledgling. Photograph By Jes Lefcourt
While the supposed kings of the jungle may dominate the land around them, this incident and others like it show that African lions (Panthera leo) may not always sit on top of the food chain when it comes to the skies. In fact, martial eagles (Polemaetus bellicosus) likely prey on lion cubs when the opportunity arises, Hatfield and his colleagues recently reported in Ecology and Evolution.
“It’s really a testament to the predatory nature of martial eagles,” Hatfield says.
Queen of the Skies
Martial eagles’ wingspans can exceed six feet. Adult females weigh more than 10 pounds, while adult males typically weigh around seven pounds. Though comparable in size and ecology to golden eagles, the species often kills larger prey. The birds swoop in and dig their razor-like talons into their prey’s spine at the back of their skull, sometimes taking out young impalas or gazelles far above their weight class. “[Their talons] are just massive killing utensils,” Hatfield says. “From a predator perspective, they are impressive in what they’re able to do.”
Hatfield’s team only recently realized the birds also preyed on other predators. The team collected seven records, including the 2012 incident, that describe martial eagles preying on lion cubs, resulting in the deaths of nine cubs and one near miss. Most of these episodes probably involve larger females, Hatfield suspects, though two records included juveniles preying on cubs.
The earliest case comes from 2008, when a photographer captured an image of an eagle feeding on a freshly killed cub, while the most recent was in 2023, when a safari guide saw a juvenile eagle hunt and kill a cub large enough that the raptor couldn’t fly off with it.
Risk Versus Reward
Despite their aerial antics, martial eagles are typically risk averse. “When they go to take a lion cub, it’s with a lot of recognition of the risks,” Hatfield says. But not all records seem to show this careful calculation.
In the one failed killing, a martial eagle swoops in to snatch a six-week-old cub right next to its mother. The lioness spots the approaching danger, and “literally leaps in the air to try to take the martial out of the sky,” Hatfield describes. “You can just see the lioness’s eyes lock onto something, then she crouches and launches.”
The eagle dodged the counterattack, and didn’t get the cub, but the whole maneuver “was just stupid.” Hatfield speculates that the raptor didn’t see the lioness. Episodes like this are so dangerous for the eagle, “you wonder if they are doing something ever just for fun,” he says.
Amy Dickman, a conservation biologist at Oxford University in the U.K., isn’t surprised that eagles will go after cubs again and again if the strategy proves successful. She also leads Lion Landscapes, a nonprofit focused on coexistence of humans and wildlife in Kenya and Tanzania, and says the conclusions of Hatfield’s team “seem sound.”
As far as the lions are concerned, “it’s just another kind of risk that lions have to deal with,” Dickman says, like predation from hyenas or male lions from competing prides. While she doesn’t think the eagles pose a conservation threat to the big cats, an individual pride in a given area might feel pressure if a martial eagle has honed in on their cubs as a food source. “It shows you how interesting and diverse the natural world is,” Dickman says.
Predators or Prey?
Martial eagles aren’t picky when it comes to big cats. Some have taken cheetah and leopard kittens, as well. Hatfield also notes the risk probably goes both ways—lions could and probably have hunted adult eagles or nests. At least one YouTube video shows a leopard killing a martial eagle.
“The relationships between top predators at the top of the [food] pyramid are complicated,” Hatfield says.
Martial eagles are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and Hatfield hopes that studies like this bring more attention to their plight. Like other large raptors in Africa, the species faces habitat loss, poaching for parts, electrocution on power lines and persecution.
“We are all so focused on the elephant and lion and rhino,” Hatfield says. “A lot of these big eagles and vultures are going to go extinct right in front of our eyes.”

Regina Mills is trapped in a life she never wanted. At 33, she works tirelessly for her mother, Cora, at the family’s powerful company—a position she loathes but feels obligated to uphold. Her relationship with her mother is strained at best, and her thoughts often drift to the father she hasn't seen in 28 years. Henry Mills, her beloved father, disappeared from her life when Cora took her away after their bitter divorce. He left for South Africa, where he built a new life running a safari, and she hasn't heard from him since.
One day, Regina receives an unexpected letter from a South African lawyer. Her father has passed away, leaving her his pride and joy: the safari. The news shakes her to the core. Despite the anger and resentment she feels for being abandoned, something compels her to pack her bags and head to South Africa.
Upon arrival, she is greeted by the wild beauty of the African savannah—a stark contrast to the cold, sterile world she's used to. But as soon as she steps foot on the safari, she clashes with Emma Swan, a fiercely independent and stubborn worker who has been with the safari for years. Emma isn't thrilled about Regina's sudden appearance, and they quickly butt heads over how things should be run.
As the days pass, Regina begins to uncover secrets about her father and herself that she never imagined. Meanwhile, despite their initial animosity, the chemistry between Regina and Emma becomes undeniable. Sparks fly, and beneath the tension, an unexpected bond forms.
But with Cora trying to pull Regina back into the corporate world and Emma wrestling with her own past, they’ll need to navigate more than just the wild terrain to find a path forward—both for the safari and for themselves. Will they give in to the passion growing between them, or will their differences tear them apart before they even begin?

I turned 30 being surrounded by strangers in a foreign country halfway across the world.
I’m going through all my pictures and I can’t believe half of the things I got to experience out there. 4 African countries, 6 safari drives, 1 walking safari tour, zip lining from Zambia to Zimbabwe, flying in a helicopter for the first time, camping in the middle of the bush & having a night out in one of the most dangerous cities in South Africa.
This trip was unforgettable. I’m so glad I did it. Being surrounded by other adventurous souls made me realize how much I love & missed traveling, not vacationing. I feel realigned & ready for this new era. I’m already planning my next adventure. 🥰🫶🏼🇿🇦🇿🇼🇿🇲🇧🇼

JOIN US ON ST. KITTS.
There are many reasons to see St. Kitts, an island of a thousand treasures. To splash in warm, iridescent waters along pristine island shores. To dive ancient shipwrecks and virgin coral reefs. To sway to a soca beat, sipping local rum around a bonfire on the beach. St. Kitts is small enough to see in a day, and big enough to explore for a lifetime.
Visit the Capital: Learning more about this charming city is simple. Book one of the local walking tours and let the rich storytelling transport you through history. Tour highlights will include some of St. Kitts’ most significant landmarks. Independence Square dates back to the 1700s and once served as Basseterre’s municipal center, and today, it serves as a site for cultural events. If you’re looking to take a day trip to sister island Nevis, make your way to the recently renovated Basseterre Bus and Ferry Terminal and take the ferry to Charlestown. Whether you’re visiting for a day or a week, Basseterre offers a glimpse of Kittitian life, yesteryear and today.
Sunny Blue Dune Buggies: Drive through the dense tropical rain forest and through our quaint and charming towns - all the while riding in comfort in your Buggy.  Excellent for couples and families to explore St. Kitts in a fun and adventurous way. Sunny Blue offers you the option to explore the island on your own or through a guided tour. You can experience your adventure through the mountains or while travelling along the sandy beaches.
Brimstone Hall Fortress National Park: This is a site of historical, cultural and architectural significance. This centuries-old citadel is a monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it and to the skill and strength of the African slaves who built it on the steep at the risk and probable loss of lives. The walls are predominantly made of stone, painstakingly carved from Brimstone Hill’s hard volcanic rock. The mortar was produced from the limestone that covers much of the middle and lower slopes. Begun in the 1690s, the fortress finally took shape as a complete military community in the 1790s. This prominent citadel is one of the earliest and finest surviving examples of a new style of fortification known as the polygonal system.
South Frigate Beach: Here you will find the most action-packed strip of beach on the Caribbean Sea. And here the party goes on until the wee hours of the morning. This one-mile stretch of white-sand beach, is ideal for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing and various other water sports. It is also lined with various types of beach shacks - island bars that serve drinks, food, craft, and trinkets in an atmosphere infused with infectious Caribbean rhythm.
Kindred Spirits: Carry a collection of St. Kitts’ famous cocktails in your pocket. Designed for rum experts and enthusiasts. Your three-hour itinerary begins at 10:00 am. Once you’re in the good company of your chosen adventure buddies and soon-to-be Kittitian RumMaster, settle in for the day ahead and prepare to dive deep into one of St. Kitts’ most celebrated cultural excursions that includes a tour of our distillery and spice mill.
Sky Safari: Take in a view of the island from up above with our sky safari! This is a two hour tour that gives a full exploration of all five ziplines. You will begin your journey on line one where you will be given a detailed orientation of our complete system. Afterwards, you will embark on a short off road drive where you will then fly our next three lines over 250ft above the valley floor. A short walk down hill will take you to line five where you can race your partner or other visitors on our dual line system.
Sugar City Trains: Join our fun-filled Sugar City Train and learn of the history of our twin island Federation, once known as the mother colony of the British West Indies. Tour the historical spots of the beautiful city and its immediate surroundings while exciting tour guide brings history and modern living to life. And it successfully combines three fundamental calibers in substance: agriculture, green energy and tourism.  May the natural and manmade beauty of the Park awaken visitors' environmental awareness.
Natural Farm: Nestled 1542 ft above sea level in the rich forest region at Phillip’s Level, the cabin retreat has a spacious porch with impressive views of the surrounding mountains – perfect for relaxing, drinking a cup of coffee or tea or a glass of wine, and taking in the fresh mountain air. Consider Liamuiga Natural Farms your retreat. Visitors will be touring a fully operational coffee and citrus farm. Visitors can expect the peace and tranquility that comes from being over 1500 feet above sea level in St. Kitts’ mountains.
Paint & Sip: This paint and sip experience allows everyone to paint their very own custom masterpiece on a 9in x 12in canvas, as they sip on wine, provided by us, and have a great time! Events usually last 1.5 hours and can accommodate between 6 - 30 guests. For those who prefer not to drink wine, you’re allowed to bring your own alternate beverage to sip.

Tangalle
I've been taking it easy in Tangalle. In part because it's pretty hot in the sun and away from the shore.
I walked downtown to find an ATM. Most of the restaurants here are small and don't take credit cards, and I suspect the rest of the trip will be the same. I looked at my future stays, and it appears there should be more ATMs nearby, so I don't think I will need to worry about cash.
As I was walking through town, the local schools got out. There is a large girls' school, and many girls are standing along the road waiting for buses.
Tumblr media
The evening view of the shore from my balcony is nice.
Tumblr media
Several national parks are within an hour or so of here. I was scheduled to visit Lunugamvehera National Park this morning, but the roads there are flooded, so I went to Udawalawe National Park instead. One advantage of Lunugamvehera is that it is supposed to be less crowded. That was definitely not the case with Udawalawe.
Tumblr media
Seeing this long line of tourist trucks ahead of us was disheartening. But I soon saw the problem. This group of elephants were calmly standing in the road blocking all traffic.
Tumblr media
It took quite a while for them to decide to mosey off into the woods.
One thing I have liked about safaris is the chance to see birds. My detail vision is poor, and I'm red-colorblind, so most of the time, birds are just spots flying through the sky. Previously, I had brought my super-zoom camera, which is great for wildlife, but I decided not to carry it for a month for a 3-hour excursion. So my photos here are not the best, but the longer telephoto of the new iPhone helped.
The red-wattle lapwings got close enough.
Tumblr media
As did this Kingfisher and this green bee-eater.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this Red Jungle Fowl. My guide was careful to say it wasn't a chicken, but clearly, chickens are descended from them. As a note, the Red Jungle Fowl is the national bird of Sri Lanka.
Tumblr media
There are peacocks all over.
Tumblr media
A couple were displaying as we went past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The peahens tended to be in the woods, where they were more challenging to see, but I assume they were there.
On the tollway down here, there was a huge sign warning drivers of peacocks on the road.
Other traffic jams were caused by huge troops of macaque monkeys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are just a few of the troop; I estimate there were over 100.
One crocodile was in the distance, so it was a poor photo.
Tumblr media
More elephants, including these two males, were doing a slow face-off on the road. We eventually just turned around.
Tumblr media
We ended with a large herd of Sri Lankan Axis deer.
Tumblr media
I was surprised that they were all spotted, like an American fawn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The safari was not as exciting as an African one, but interesting. After the first group of elephants blocking the road, the vehicles dispersed in various directions, so congestion was not an issue.
Tomorrow, I have another driver taking me up into the central highlands. My first stop there will be in Ella.

Tanzania Safari Price - How Much Does a Safari in Tanzania Cost?
Tumblr media
Have you ever wished you could go on a holiday in Tanzania? It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows you to witness some of the most incredible wildlife on the planet. But understanding the Tanzania Safari Cost is key to planning your adventure effectively.
The cost of a Tanzania safari depends on several factors, such as the length of your trip, the type of accommodation you choose, and the activities you include in your itinerary. On average, you can expect to spend between $200 and $1,000 per person per day.
As you get ready to explore Tanzania's breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife, let’s take a closer look at the factors that influence safari costs and how they shape your overall experience. Planning wisely can help you make the most of your trip without compromising on quality.
Accommodation: The choice between basic camping, mid-range lodges, or luxurious tented camps significantly impacts overall expenses. Upgrading to more luxurious options often increases the cost.
Transportation: Different transport options, such as shared group tours or private vehicles, vary in cost. Additionally, choosing to fly or drive between parks affects the budget due to differences in time and convenience.
Park Fees and Permits: Tanzania's national parks have entry fees, which can vary depending on the location. The number of parks you visit and activities like guided walks or specialized safaris requiring separate permits contribute to the total cost.
Seasonal Variations: Timing your safari influences prices. Peak seasons, coinciding with the dry months and the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration, often mean higher rates due to increased demand. Alternatively, the rainy season might offer reduced prices, but wildlife sightings could be limited.
Guide and Tour Operator Costs: A knowledgeable guide significantly enhances the safari experience. Guides and tour operators with better reputations and services usually come at higher costs.
Additional Expenses: Consider other costs like meals (if not included), drinks, gratuities, and optional activities that might add to the total cost.
Understanding these price factors allows for better planning and budgeting for a Tanzania Safari. By researching, comparing different packages, and being clear about what is included, one can strike a balance between cost and a fulfilling safari adventure amidst Tanzania's stunning landscapes and wildlife.
With African Scenic Safaris you never have to worry about your safari costs in Tanzania. We know what you want, so we customize your itinerary to meet those goals. You will never be let down on your trip to Tanzania, known as the "gem of Africa." Just pick one of our custom services.

Exploring South Africa’s Premier Wildlife Destinations: Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands Game Reserve
South Africa’s Kruger National Park and the adjacent Sabi Sands Game Reserve are two of the world's most iconic wildlife destinations. Visitors are drawn to these areas for their extraordinary biodiversity, luxury lodges, and the chance to experience Africa's Big Five. To make the most of your adventure, choosing the right tour package or lodge can elevate your trip to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Below, we explore some of the best Kruger National Park tour packages, Sabi Sands Game Reserve options, and the luxurious lodges that offer the perfect blend of wilderness and comfort.
Kruger National Park Tour Packages
Kruger National Park, one of Africa's largest game reserves, offers an abundance of tour packages that cater to a wide range of interests and budgets. Here are some popular types:
Guided Safari Tours
Multi-Day Safaris: These are the most immersive experiences, typically lasting between 3 and 7 days. Multi-day tours often include guided game drives at dawn and dusk, as well as excursions to significant historical or cultural sites in the area.
Fly-In Safaris: If time is a constraint, fly-in safaris are an excellent option. These packages often include transfers from Johannesburg or Cape Town, combining ease of access with a luxury experience.
Self-Drive Safaris: For the independent traveler, self-drive packages allow you to explore Kruger at your own pace. These tours often include accommodation, maps, and insider tips on the best wildlife viewing routes.
Specialized Packages
Photographic Safaris: Tailored for photography enthusiasts, these tours are led by professional wildlife photographers, who guide you to prime spots for capturing Kruger's wildlife in action.
Family-Friendly Safaris: These packages are designed to cater to families with children, offering shorter game drives and interactive activities to keep younger travelers engaged.
Luxury Safari Packages
For those seeking a more exclusive experience, luxury packages offer five-star accommodations, private game drives, and gourmet dining. Lodges in private concessions within Kruger provide a more intimate and luxurious stay, often with fewer tourists.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve: A Private and Exclusive Experience
Adjacent to Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is known for its exceptional wildlife viewing, particularly its leopard sightings. Unlike Kruger, Sabi Sands is a private reserve, which means fewer tourists and a more exclusive experience. Here are some top options:
Private Game Drives
Game drives in Sabi Sands are conducted by highly experienced guides and trackers, offering a personalized experience. The private nature of the reserve allows for off-road driving, bringing guests closer to the animals in ways not permitted in Kruger.
Walking Safaris
For a truly immersive experience, walking safaris in Sabi Sands allow you to track wildlife on foot, guided by armed rangers. This intimate way of experiencing the African bush brings you closer to nature, focusing on the smaller details of the ecosystem often missed from a vehicle.
Exclusive Lodges
Sabi Sands is home to some of the continent's most luxurious lodges. Properties like Londolozi, Singita, and Ulusaba provide five-star accommodations, complete with private plunge pools, personal butlers, and world-class dining. These lodges are often set in prime wildlife areas, ensuring incredible sightings directly from your deck.
Kruger National Park Lodges: Where Comfort Meets Wilderness
kruger national park lodges offers a range of lodges to suit all tastes and budgets. Whether you're looking for a luxurious stay or a more rustic experience, there’s something for everyone.
Rest Camps
The park’s official rest camps are an affordable option for those wanting to stay within Kruger. These camps offer various accommodations, from basic huts to more comfortable chalets. They are ideal for self-drive safaris, offering access to key wildlife areas.
Luxury Lodges in Kruger
Singita Lebombo Lodge and Lion Sands Narina Lodge are examples of high-end lodges located within Kruger itself. These lodges offer private game drives, spa treatments, gourmet meals, and luxurious suites with panoramic views of the bush.
Some luxury lodges, like Jock Safari Lodge, are situated within private concessions in Kruger. These lodges provide an exclusive experience, with fewer tourists and more personalized services.
Eco-Friendly Lodges
Many lodges in Kruger have adopted eco-friendly practices, integrating solar power and sustainable water usage into their operations. These lodges offer an environmentally conscious choice without sacrificing comfort or luxury.
Private Lodges in Kruger Park: The Ultimate Luxury
For those seeking an even more private experience, kruger park private lodges are unmatched in exclusivity and luxury. These lodges are located within private concessions or on the park's borders, offering guests unrivaled access to wildlife without the crowds.
Tintswalo Safari Lodge
Located in the Manyeleti Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger, Tintswalo offers elegant accommodations with a colonial charm. The lodge’s private suites each have a plunge pool and overlook a waterhole, providing excellent wildlife viewing from the comfort of your room.
Royal Malewane
One of South Africa’s most exclusive lodges, Royal Malewane is known for its opulent suites, award-winning spa, and top-tier guiding. It is a favorite among celebrities and high-profile travelers seeking privacy and exceptional service.
Londolozi Private Granite Suites
Located in the Sabi Sands Reserve, Londolozi’s Private Granite Suites offer one of the most luxurious safari experiences. With only three suites available, it’s perfect for a secluded, romantic getaway, surrounded by nature’s beauty.
Conclusion
Whether you choose the vast wilderness of Kruger National Park or the exclusive luxury of Sabi Sands Game Reserve, your safari experience will be nothing short of extraordinary. With options ranging from budget-friendly rest camps to world-class lodges, the magic of South Africa’s wildlife is accessible to all.
