Unveiling the Rainbow Nation on a Budget: A Backpackerâs Guide to South Africa
South Africa, a land of captivating landscapes, diverse cultures, and awe-inspiring wildlife, beckons travelers with its unique charm. But worries about cost can sometimes hold you back. Fear not, budget-savvy adventurer! With a little planning and resourcefulness, you can explore the wonders of South Africa without breaking the bank. This comprehensive guide equips you with the knowledge to plan a budget-friendly trip to South Africa, packed with tips, must-see places that won't drain your wallet, and hidden gems for the off-the-beaten-path explorer.
Conquering the Cost: Mastering the Art of Budget Travel in South Africa
Embrace the Shoulder Seasons: South Africa experiences peak tourist seasons during the summer months (November-February). Consider traveling during the shoulder seasons (March-May and September-October). Shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and significantly lower accommodation prices, allowing you to truly experience the South African spirit without the summer rush.
Become a Flight Ninja: Airfare is often the biggest expense. Utilize flight comparison websites and apps like Google Flights or Kayak to track prices, set alerts for deals, and consider flying on budget airlines like [invalid URL removed] or FlySafair. Be flexible with your travel dates and destinations â sometimes shifting your trip by a few days can yield significant savings. Consider flying into smaller, regional airports that may be more affordable than major hubs like Johannesburg or Cape Town.
Accommodation on a Shoestring: Hostels are your haven for budget-friendly stays in South Africa's major cities. They offer dorm rooms at a fraction of the cost of hotels and provide a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow travelers and swap travel tips. Consider guesthouses or backpacker lodges in smaller towns for a more local experience, often at a lower price point than hotels. If traveling in a group, consider house-sitting or renting an apartment through platforms like Airbnb, which can surprisingly be affordable and allows you to cook some meals yourselves.
Public Transportation is Your Ally: Many South African cities are incredibly walkable, allowing you to explore vibrant neighborhoods and bustling markets on foot. Efficient public transportation systems like buses, trains, and metered taxis make getting around larger cities a breeze. Many cities offer discount travel passes that allow unlimited rides within a specific timeframe. For longer distances between cities, consider budget-friendly coach services like Baz Bus or Greyhound South Africa.
Embrace the Slow Travel Philosophy: Resist the urge to cram too many destinations into your itinerary. Pick a few key regions and immerse yourself in their local cultures and landscapes. Slow travel allows for a richer experience, avoids the high costs associated with frequent transportation changes, and gives you the opportunity to relax, soak up the sunshine, and truly appreciate the "South African way of life."
Must-See Gems for the Budget Traveler:
Cape Town: No South African adventure is complete without exploring the vibrant city of Cape Town. Hike or take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain for breathtaking panoramic views, explore the historic V&A Waterfront, and wander through the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood. Budget-friendly guesthouses and hostels are readily available in the city center, while the efficient MyCiTi bus system connects most areas.
Kruger National Park: Embark on an unforgettable safari adventure in Kruger National Park, one of Africa's premier wildlife reserves. While private game reserves can be expensive, Kruger offers affordable self-drive options. Budget-friendly campsites are available within the park, while local buses connect nearby towns like Nelspruit to the park entrances.
The Garden Route: Take a scenic road trip along the Garden Route, a coastal haven known for its dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and charming towns. Explore wilderness parks like Tsitsikamma National Park, spot whales in Hermanus during the season (May to November), and bungee jump off the Bloukrans Bridge, the highest commercial bridge jump in the world (for the adrenaline junkies!). Budget-friendly campsites and guesthouses are scattered along the route, while Baz Bus offers a hop-on, hop-off service perfect for exploring at your own pace.
Mountain Majesty: Budget-Friendly Adventures in the Drakensberg
The Drakensberg mountain range offers breathtaking scenery and a multitude of budget-friendly adventures:
Royal Natal National Park: Hike through the dramatic scenery of Royal Natal National Park, home to the majestic Amphitheatre rock face. Budget-friendly campsites are available within the park, while local buses connect nearby towns like Bergville to the park entrance.
Sani Pass: For experienced drivers with a 4x4 vehicle, conquer the Sani Pass, a challenging yet rewarding mountain road leading to Lesotho, a tiny African kingdom nestled within the Drakensberg. Stunning views
Sani Pass (Continued): Stunning views and a unique cultural experience await at the top. Budget-friendly guesthouses can be found in the small town of Underberg at the foot of the pass. Remember, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required to drive in South Africa, and ensure your rental car company allows travel on challenging mountain roads like Sani Pass.
Solo Motorcycle Adventure: Conquering the Open Road
For the truly adventurous soul, consider a solo motorcycle journey through South Africa. However, vast distances and diverse landscapes require careful planning and an awareness of road conditions. Here's what you'll need to know:
International Driving Permit South Africa (IDP) is Mandatory: An IDP, along with your home country's driver's license, is a legal requirement for renting a motorcycle in South Africa Choose Your Route Wisely:
The Garden Route: Revisit the Garden Route on two wheels, experiencing the coastal beauty at your own pace. Budget-friendly campsites and guesthouses are available along the route, while local ferries connect ports like Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay for a more varied journey.
Safety on Two Wheels:
Beyond the Must-Sees: Unveiling Hidden Gems
South Africa is a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Here are a few suggestions for the off-the-beaten-path adventurer:
Addo Elephant National Park: Spot a variety of wildlife, including the park's famous elephant population, on a self-drive safari adventure in Addo Elephant National Park. Budget-friendly campsites are available within the park, while local buses connect nearby towns like Port Elizabeth to the park entrance.
Cederberg Mountains: Hike through the dramatic sandstone formations of the Cederberg Mountains, a scenic escape from the busier tourist destinations. Budget-friendly guesthouses and campsites can be found in small towns like Clanwilliam, while local buses connect larger towns like Cape Town to the region.
The Whale Coast: Spot whales (May to November) and other marine life along the Whale Coast, a scenic stretch of coastline between Hermanus and Gansbaai. Budget-friendly guesthouses and campsites are available in towns along the coast, while local buses connect major cities like Cape Town to the region. Consider joining a budget-friendly boat tour for an unforgettable encounter with marine life.
Embrace the Unexpected and Pack Light
Remember, the most enriching experiences in South Africa often happen outside the guidebooks. Strike up conversations with friendly locals, explore bustling open-air markets for unique souvenirs, and don't be afraid to veer off the beaten path and discover hidden gems. Pack light to navigate public transportation efficiently and avoid baggage fees on domestic flights.
A Few Final Tips:
Travel Insurance: While aiming for a budget-friendly trip, don't skimp on travel insurance. Unexpected medical emergencies can arise, and travel insurance can provide peace of mind. Choose a plan that suits your needs and budget.
Be Prepared for All Weather: Weather in South Africa can vary greatly across regions and seasons. Pack clothing for all types of weather, including rain gear, warm layers
Be Prepared for All Weather (Continued): ...and sunscreen, especially for coastal destinations. Remember, South Africa lies in the southern hemisphere, so seasons are reversed. Summer (December-February) is hot and dry, while winter (June-August) can be chilly, especially at higher altitudes.
Embrace the Lingo: Learning a few basic Afrikaans phrases goes a long way in connecting with locals and adding a touch of authenticity to your trip. Afrikaans is one of the official languages of South Africa, alongside English. Understanding a few pleasantries like "hello" (goeie dag), "thank you" (dankie), and "please" (asseblief) demonstrates respect and can enhance your experience. Foodie Paradise on a Budget: Skip expensive restaurants and delve into the world of South African cuisine. Savor a traditional braai (barbecue) with friends, indulge in a bunny chow (a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with savory curry), and try a delicious koeksister (a deep-fried pastry drizzled with syrup). Many cafes and restaurants offer affordable lunch specials, and grocery stores are readily available for self-catering in campsites or guesthouses.
Safety First: While South Africa is generally a safe country for travelers, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in large cities. Avoid carrying large sums of cash, and be cautious when using ATMs. Keep valuables out of sight and take photocopies of important documents like your passport. Unforgettable Memories Await:
Traveling to South Africa on a budget is not about deprivation; it's about an authentic and enriching experience. Embrace the laid-back South African spirit, "ubuntu" (meaning "humanity towards others"), connect with the diverse cultures, and savor the stunning landscapes. With a little planning, an open mind, and a dash of adventurous spirit, South Africa will unfold its magic before you, leaving you with a heart full of wonder, a camera roll bursting with memories, and a yearning to return for more. So, pack your bags, unleash your inner explorer, and embark on your unforgettable budget adventure to the Rainbow Nation!

Cheap flight to Namibia The good news is, you donât have to break the bank to experience these wonders. Hereâs how you can find cheap flights to Namibia and make the most of your adventure.
1. Book in Advance
One of the golden rules for scoring cheap flights is to book early. Airlines often release tickets around a year in advance, and the prices tend to be lower the earlier you book. Keep an eye out for deals and snag your tickets as soon as possible.
2. Use Flight Comparison Websites
Websites like Cheaper Flights Hotels offer excellent tools for comparing prices across various airlines. These platforms can help you find the best deals by showing a range of options and prices, making it easier to choose the most affordable flight to Namibia.
3. Be Flexible with Dates
Flexibility can save you a lot of money. Try to avoid peak travel seasons and look for flights during the off-peak times. Mid-week flights are often cheaper than weekend flights, and flying during off-peak hours can also reduce costs.

Sometimes, flying directly to Namibia can be expensive. Look for flights to nearby countries or cities and then book a budget flight to Namibia. For instance, you could fly into Johannesburg, South Africa, and then catch a cheaper connecting flight to Windhoek, Namibiaâs capital.
5. Sign Up for Alerts
Many travel websites offer fare alerts. By signing up, youâll receive notifications about price drops and special deals on flights to Namibia. This can give you the edge in booking a cheaper ticket before prices rise again.
6. Take Advantage of Airline Rewards
Frequent flyer programs and airline rewards can significantly reduce your travel expenses. Accumulate miles or points through your credit card or travel, and redeem them for discounted or free flights. Check with airlines that fly to Namibia to see what rewards programs they offer.
7. Look for Package Deals
Sometimes, bundling your flight with accommodation or car rentals can save you money. Websites like Cheaper Flights Hotels often have package deals that offer better value than booking everything separately.

Is South Africa expensive for American tourists?
A Cost Guide for American Tourists: Navigating South Africa
Exploring the vibrant landscapes and rich cultures of South Africa is a dream for many travelers. From the iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town to the wild safaris of Kruger National Park, this diverse nation offers an unforgettable experience. However, one question often looms large for American tourists: Is South Africa expensive?
Let's delve into this topic and provide a comprehensive guide for American travelers planning their African adventure.
Understanding Currency Exchange
The first step in assessing the cost of traveling to South Africa is understanding the currency exchange rate. The South African Rand (ZAR) is typically weaker than the US Dollar (USD), which means American tourists may find their money stretches further in South Africa. It's wise to monitor exchange rates and plan accordingly.
Accommodation Costs
Accommodation options in South Africa vary widely, catering to different budgets and preferences. From luxury lodges to budget-friendly hostels, there's something for everyone. Expect to pay more for accommodations in popular tourist destinations like Cape Town and the Garden Route, while rural areas and smaller towns may offer more affordable options.
To get an idea of prices and to book accommodation, websites like Wild Voyager offer a range of options tailored to different budgets and preferences. Wild Voyager provides valuable insights into African tours and accommodations, helping travelers make informed decisions.
Dining and Food Costs
South Africa boasts a diverse culinary scene influenced by its multicultural population. Dining out can range from inexpensive street food to fine dining experiences. Traditional dishes like braai (barbecue) and bobotie (a savory meat dish) are both delicious and budget-friendly options.
To save money on food, consider dining at local eateries and markets rather than tourist hotspots. Also, self-catering accommodations can help reduce expenses by allowing you to prepare your meals.
Transportation Expenses
Getting around South Africa can be affordable, especially if you're willing to use public transportation. Major cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg have reliable bus and train networks, while intercity buses offer a cost-effective way to travel between destinations.
Renting a car is another popular option for exploring South Africa, providing flexibility and convenience. However, fuel costs and rental fees should be factored into your budget.
Activity and Sightseeing Costs
South Africa offers a plethora of activities and attractions, from wildlife safaris to wine tasting tours. While some experiences can be pricey, there are also plenty of free or low-cost activities to enjoy. Hiking in national parks, visiting museums, and exploring historical sites are all budget-friendly options.
For those interested in wildlife encounters, safari tours are a must-do experience. Prices vary depending on the duration and level of luxury, but there are options to suit different budgets. Booking tours in advance and comparing prices can help you find the best deals.
Safety and Health Considerations
While South Africa offers incredible experiences, it's essential to prioritize safety and health during your travels. Certain areas may have higher crime rates, so researching safety tips and staying informed about local conditions is crucial.
Healthcare standards in South Africa are generally high, but travel insurance is recommended to cover any unexpected medical expenses. Additionally, vaccinations may be required depending on your travel itinerary, so consult with a healthcare provider before your trip.
Conclusion
In conclusion, South Africa offers a diverse and rewarding travel experience for American tourists. While certain expenses like accommodations and activities can add up, careful planning and budgeting can help you make the most of your trip without breaking the bank. By leveraging resources like Wild Voyager and being mindful of exchange rates, you can enjoy all that South Africa has to offer within your budget constraints.
Whether you're marveling at the majestic wildlife or savoring the flavors of local cuisine, your African adventure is sure to be unforgettable. So pack your bags, embrace the spirit of adventure, and get ready to explore the wonders of South Africa!

Transport Car Services in Johannesburg: Youâre Guide to Reliable and Convenient Car Transport Solutions
Transporting a car, whether itâs relocating a family vehicle, purchasing a car from another city, or managing fleet logistics, requires a dependable and professional service provider. In Johannesburg, car transport services have become essential for those seeking convenience, security, and efficiency. Hereâs a look at the key features, benefits, and considerations for choosing the right car transport service in the area.
Why Use Car Transport Services in Johannesburg?
Secure Transportation: Car transport services prioritize vehicle security. Using specialized carriers and secure loading methods, they ensure your car arrives at its destination undamaged.
Time Efficiency: Whether moving locally or long-distance, professional transport services help save time, enabling you to avoid the lengthy drive and related travel stress.
Cost-Effective: Avoiding road wear, fuel costs, and accommodation expenses during long-distance relocations often makes car transport services more economical than driving the car yourself.
Convenience: When relocating, especially over long distances, transport services streamline the moving process by managing all logistical details for a smooth, hands-free experience.
Types of Car Transport Services
Door-to-Door Delivery: This convenient service allows the transporter to pick up and drop off the vehicle at specific addresses, eliminating the need for you to travel to terminals.
Open Carrier Transport: Typically more affordable, open carriers are suitable for standard vehicles, although exposure to weather conditions is possible. They are commonly used for everyday car transport.
Enclosed Carrier Transport: Ideal for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles, enclosed carriers offer protection from weather, road debris, and other potential risks, ensuring your vehicle remains pristine throughout transit.
Expedited Delivery: For urgent situations, some providers offer expedited or express transport, allowing for faster vehicle delivery within specific timeframes, often at an additional cost.
Choosing the Right Car Transport Service Provider
When selecting a car transport service in Johannesburg, consider these important factors:
Experience and Reputation: Look for companies with a strong reputation and proven experience in vehicle transport. Customer reviews and ratings can provide insight into their reliability.
Insurance Coverage: Confirm that the service offers adequate insurance to cover any potential damages. This is particularly important for high-value or rare vehicles.
Transparent Pricing: Avoid hidden fees by choosing providers that offer transparent, all-inclusive quotes. This allows you to budget effectively and avoid unexpected charges.
Communication and Tracking: A reputable provider will keep you informed about your carâs location and progress throughout the journey. Real-time tracking options can add peace of mind.
Benefits of Car Transport Services in Johannesburg
Stress-Free Relocation: Car transport companies handle all logistics, allowing you to focus on other aspects of moving or travel.
Flexibility for Businesses: Fleet managers, dealerships, and rental companies can optimize their logistics and reduce wear on vehicles by transporting them to specific locations without needing on-the-ground drivers.
Environmental Benefits: Consolidated car transport reduces the overall carbon footprint compared to individual long-distance driving, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Leading Car Transport Companies in Johannesburg
Auto Logistics Services: Specializing in nationwide and cross-border vehicle transport, they offer door-to-door service and flexible solutions for all vehicle types.
Safe Move Car Transport: Known for its emphasis on safety, SafeMove provides both open and enclosed carriers and offers comprehensive insurance for peace of mind.
Express Auto Transporters: With an expedited delivery option, Express Auto Transporters are an ideal choice for those with time-sensitive transport needs.
Johannesburg Car Haulers: Offering competitive rates and a range of service options, they are well-suited for both personal and business transport requirements.
Final Thoughts
Transport Car services in Johannesburg provide a reliable, efficient solution for moving vehicles across distances while ensuring safety and convenience. Whether you're an intrepid explorer, a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking an unforgettable adventure, South Africa has it all. Before you pack your bags and set out on this exhilarating expedition, let's delve into the essential aspects of preparing for your South African adventure.
Preparation: The Key to a Seamless South African Adventure
A well-prepared traveler is a happy traveler, and this holds especially true when venturing into the captivating landscapes of South Africa. Prior to your departure, ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months' validity from your intended departure date. While South Africa often grants visa-free entry to citizens of many countries for short stays, it's wise to check the visa requirements specific to your nationality. Online platforms or the South African embassy in your country will provide accurate and up-to-date information.
Visa and Documentation: Navigating Entry Requirements
To secure your visit, you may need to apply for a tourist visa. Visit the official South African Department of Home Affairs website for a comprehensive list of countries requiring visas and the application process. Prepare essential documents like a confirmed return ticket, proof of accommodation, and financial means to support your stay. The visa process can be streamlined by submitting the necessary documents and completing the application online or at the South African embassy or consulate in your country.
South African Wonders: Must-Visit Destinations
From the iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town to the mesmerizing Drakensberg Mountains and the vibrant streets of Johannesburg, South Africa boasts a plethora of remarkable destinations. Dive into history at Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, or embark on a wildlife safari in Kruger National Park for an up-close encounter with the Big Five. The Garden Route's coastal beauty, the historical town of Stellenbosch with its vineyards, and the cultural richness of Durban are also unmissable highlights.
Off the Beaten Path: Small Town Treasures
While the major cities offer endless excitement, South Africa's small towns hold their own charm. Delve into the art scene of Franschhoek, discover the quaint beauty of Clarens, or explore the intriguing history of Graaff-Reinet. These towns provide an authentic glimpse into South African life, and their local markets, artisanal crafts, and warm hospitality will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.
Transportation: Navigating the Landscape
The question of transportation often arises when planning a trip. South Africa offers options for both personal vehicles and public transport. If you're an independent traveler seeking flexibility, renting a personal vehicle is a great choice. The well-maintained road networks allow you to traverse the country at your own pace. Alternatively, the extensive bus and train networks provide efficient public transport options, connecting major cities and towns.
Accommodation on a Budget: Couch Surfing and Cheap Hotels
For those looking to stretch their budget, options like couch surfing and budget-friendly hotels are a boon. Websites like Couchsurfing and Airbnb offer opportunities to connect with locals and experience the true essence of South African hospitality. Additionally, guesthouses, hostels, and lodges are scattered throughout the country, providing comfort and affordability without compromising on quality.
Wanderlust on Wheels: Renting Vehicles for Adventurous Explorations
To fully embrace the spirit of adventure, renting a vehicle is an enticing option. As a tourist, numerous reputable car rental companies cater to your needs. Be sure to have a valid international driver's license, which you can obtain before your journey, ensuring you're ready to hit the road and explore South Africa's stunning landscapes to the fullest.
Trekking and Camping: Embracing Nature's Splendor
For the intrepid souls seeking an immersive connection with nature, South Africa offers an array of trekking and camping opportunities. The Drakensberg Mountains, Tsitsikamma National Park, and the Cederberg Wilderness Area beckon with their picturesque trails and awe-inspiring vistas. Solo camping amidst these natural wonders is an unparalleled experience, allowing you to disconnect from the world and rejuvenate your spirit.
Driving Beyond Borders: International Driving License
If you plan to explore South Africa's wonders by driving, obtaining an International Driving Permit South Africa (IDP) is essential. Contact your local automobile association or motor vehicle department for guidance on obtaining this permit, which translates your driver's license into several languages. The IDP, along with your original driver's license, ensures that you're legally ready to explore the country's diverse landscapes with confidence.
Embark on the Journey of a Lifetime
As you plan your South African adventure, keep in mind that this diverse and dynamic country has something to offer every kind of traveler. From the urban allure of Cape Town to the untamed wilderness of Kruger National Park, South Africa's treasures are waiting to be explored. By preparing diligently, obtaining the necessary documentation, and embracing the local culture, you're poised to create memories that will last a lifetime. So, pack your sense of adventure and get ready to embark on a journey that promises to be nothing short of extraordinary.

What To Know Before Buying Older, Used Cars In 2022
When shopping for a used car in Johannesburg, you may find a few surprises that will leave you scratching your head.
People drive their cars longer than ever. The average age of vehicles on the road today is about 12 years old. With the inventory of used cars still recovering from tighter-than-usual conditions and prices 9% higher than a year ago, youâll want to know what factors you need to weigh when considering such a purchase.
Itâs also important to understand how mileage, age, and condition determine value when looking for a used vehicle.
Read on to find out what to consider when buying a used or older vehicle.Â
What to Know About Buying a Used Car
These days, dealerships will take high-mileage vehicles with upwards of 240,000 km driven. The tighter-than-usual inventory means cars once bound for auctions and buy-here, pay-here lots now land in the franchised dealership lot.Â
When considering a used car, youâll likely encounter two scenarios, and these can actually happen.
Scenario 1: Letâs say your family needs a second or third vehicle, and you come across an unbelievably low-mileage cream puff. The car looks nearly new, with only 60,000km on the odometer, but the SUV is 8 years old. The price is right. You feel like you won the lottery. But, you wonder what issues might later materialize because of the vehicleâs age.
Scenario 2: Perhaps youâre shopping for a used vehicle offering the latest technology, like adaptive cruise control and cameras that provide a 360-degree view of the surroundings. You canât afford a 2-year-old model with average kilometres. But the dealer offers up the car of your dreams, and itâs thousands less. Thereâs one problem: This 2-year-old model comes with 160,000 km. Should you steer clear?
Next, youâll need to do these two things first to help you decide on either of these cars.
Research the car model and check for excessive recalls. Head to the internet and research that modelâs history. Check for recalls to see if the model experiences any repetitive problems, such as serious (and expensive) issues with the transmission, power steering, electrical system, and engine. For example, replacing the engineâs timing chain can run R3,000 R6,000. Timing chains, different from a timing belt, are not uncommon issues in higher mileage cars. Timing chain issues can arise if the vehicle owner doesnât change the oil regularly.
Get a vehicle history report. Knowing a carâs history is vital. Ask the carâs owner or dealer to show you data that includes accident history, the vehicleâs repairs, maintenance schedule, recalls, and in some cases, even oil changes. AutoCheck and Carfax are excellent sources for this information. When you buy a used car from an individual, you can purchase a vehicle history report for between a few hundred Rands. Generally, a well-maintained vehicle offers a longer, potentially trouble-free future than an ignored vehicle.
If buying a used car, itâs best to consider vehicles maintained according to the ownerâs manual. So, in the case of Scenario 2, that high-mileage car could be a good buy.
An older car, such as the 8-year-old model in Scenario 1, has components that rust over a longer period of time. Make sure to inspect the underside of vehicles from states that use salt to melt snow before purchasing to determine if the brake lines and suspension systems work safely. In addition, if the vehicle owner doesnât follow regular maintenance protocols, shock absorbers, brake rotors and pads, tires, and other components will likely need to be replaced. If the tires look old, they could have dry rot, essentially cracking that makes them dangerous due to age.Â
Other susceptible age-related components include the radiator and heater core. For example, the heater core might get weak and suddenly blow out. Well, you fix the heater core, and the radiator might fail because suddenly, you are pressurizing the system back up to specifications.
A high-mileage vehicle used chiefly for commuting with many highway kilometres may be in much better shape than a vehicle mainly used for quick trips back and forth to the local grocer. There are several reasons for this, says mechanic Gary Hardesty, a master technician with Cox Automotive, the parent company of Kelley Blue Book.
âShort trips put more stress on the starter and engine components by constantly being used in short trips, where a long commute may only start a vehicle twice a day,â Hardesty said.
âAlso, if an engine isnât brought up to normal temperatures, the oil can become contaminated quickly as a normal operating temperature allows moisture and contaminants like unburned fuel to be drawn into the combustion chamber and burned off as a normal operation. These contaminants, not removed by longer drives and regular oil changes, risk causing major engine problems like sludge build-up.â
Hardesty recommends getting the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic before you make the purchase.
âA quick way to see if a vehicle has rust is to open the hood and look at the shock tower bolts and components under the hood, as they are exposed to the same salt as the undercarriage,â Hardesty said. âMost manufacturers offer a corrosion guarantee for the unibody with some type of corrosion inhibitor. This is not true for most components like fasteners and such.â
