now that I've been here for a decade, the rent that was astronomically expensive to me (coming from montreal 2014, where we had an old but comfy 2br for $750/mo total. $325/mo each) when I first got here now seems laughably cheap. it's miserable, yet competitive, and a lot of people get locked into shitty living situations out of fear of the nightmare of finding a new place to live. people often remark about the chill vibes montreal has (or had, depends who you ask), and ultimately a lot of it came down to: not having to hustle your ass off because you could have a beautiful walk-up in a nice medium-density neighbourhood for <$500, and being able to get good microbrews and wine at your corner store, lmao. but back to hating toronto: the sprawl is sickening! you get a reprieve in certain neighbourhoods but it's just concrete on concrete on concrete mostly. I feel claustrophobic and trapped here. it takes over an hour IN A CAR to leave the city, or more like two hours if you get unlucky on the 401. if you don't drive? lmao. the commutes that people treat as 'normal' here are unbelievable and inhumane. if I want to be 'in nature' i have to make a whole trip out of it, like that's my entire day. and even then it involves shielding your eyes from the city and pretending it's not there while you look at the lake, or high park, or whatever. I never appreciated this enough about edmonton as a kid/teen but now when I think too hard about the river valley at home I get nauseatingly homesick. (ofc the sprawl in the prairies is horrific as well; I grew up in the small area of downtown edmonton well-serviced by public transport and by the river).

this is to say nothing of the big chunks of 'toronto proper' that I avoid entirely because they're full of the people toronto really wants to cater to, i.e. bay st business guys and lawyers who are the ones buying up all the new developments as investment properties. everything cool here gets torn down for these assholes and turned into luxury condos and people clap and cheer because it's 'more housing!' and you look over and doug ford is getting handed a big novelty check from the Corrupt Personal Friends of Ford Family and Property Developers Foundation.

A man who paid more than $1,800 to have his SUV moved from Scarborough, Ont., to Edmonton in mid-November is still waiting for it to arrive, thanks to a dispute between two subcontractors he did not hire.

Anoop Manoj Kumar told CBC News that he and his family moved from Ontario to Alberta in late October. His wife had found a job in Edmonton, and they were drawn to Alberta's affordability.

A representative from Mana Auto, an Oakville-based Fyre Logistics subcontractor, called on November 9 to arrange vehicle pickup. Manoj Kumar said a friend handed over the SUV on the evening of November 14, and the same employee confirmed it would be delivered by the first week of December.

More than 60 days later, Manoj Kumar is still without the vehicle and has learned it is being held hostage over a payment dispute between Mana Auto and its subcontractor, G'S Auto Hauling.

Fyre Logistics has told CBC News it will pursue legal action to recover its customer's vehicle. The other two companies are accusing each other of not paying outstanding invoices.

As temperatures in Alberta plunged below –30 C in December, Manoj Kumar boarded the bus to buy groceries and collect medicine for his 10-month-old son. His wife, who feeds their son before leaving for work, has been paying between $15 and $20 to commute by Uber every morning because the two-bus journey from their apartment near Northgate Center would take an hour.

Manoj Kumar has complained to all the companies involved, spoken with Edmonton police, filed a complaint with Alberta's Consumer Investigation Unit, and contacted a lawyer because it is unclear when his vehicle will be delivered.

Fred Giguére, Fyre Logistics' account manager, told CBC News in a text message that the company was concerned about this situation and helping Manoj Kumar recover his SUV.

He said the company sent a demand letter to Mana Auto and G'S Auto Hauling last week. The letter said Fyre Logistics had contracted Mana Auto for the move and learned on Jan. 10 that G'S Auto Hauling, an Alberta company, had possessed Manoj Kumar's vehicle for several weeks.

The letter said the company would take legal action if the vehicle's location was released within 10 days. Patrizia Piscopo, G'S Auto Hauling's office manager, said her company picked up the Mazda from Mana Auto in Ontario and took it to Alberta.

She said the company is holding the vehicle in a storage yard in Edmonton and refuses to release it because Mana Auto owes G'S Auto Hauling $15,750 for jobs since August. She would not disclose the vehicle's location.

She said the vehicle should not have been broken into multiple times without the customer's consent, and when G'S Auto Hauling accepted the job, the company did not know who the owner was.

She claimed that Mana Auto promised but did not deliver payment for outstanding invoices, resulting in the company withholding a vehicle for the first time in its history.

A dispatcher for Mana Auto told CBC News both companies owe each other money. The dispatcher claimed G'S Auto Hauling owes Mana Auto $8,500. He said the Alberta company should credit that amount and deliver the vehicle to receive payment.

G'S Auto Hauling, according to Piscopo, has already given Mana Auto credit for all jobs. Giguére said Fyre Logistics is prepared to take legal action to recover the SUV for its customer.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction said the government wouldn't comment on specific cases but provided general information about consumer complaints.

The Consumer Investigations Unit received nine complaints about automotive moving companies last year, 11 in 2021, and six in 2020. The spokesperson said consumers can search online for contraventions of Alberta's consumer protection laws and suggested consumers find out if a company is a member of an industry association or the Better Business Bureau.

Ontario's Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery shared similar tips and said it had not recorded any complaints concerning Mana Auto. Andy Thorndyke, who owns Thorsons Marketing Associates Canada, a car carrier in the Greater Toronto Area, said there are three main types of car transportation services in the industry: rail service, open car service, and enclosed car service. 

Vehicles in an "open" carrier are stacked on top of each other and exposed to the elements, while those in enclosed carriers are stacked inside trailers. Thorndyke said his company, an enclosed carrier, moves vehicles 98 percent of the time using its own trucks. Other companies, known as brokers, sell car transportation services to customers and rely on a network of carriers. 

Thorndyke said vehicle moves can become "very messy" and increasingly risky when multiple subcontractors are involved. He advised consumers to contact the carrier industry association in Canada, but he also advised vehicle owners to inquire whether companies move cars using their own equipment. He also suggests people read online reviews and call their local dealership for recommendations on reputable companies.

Manoj Kumar told CBC News that he had no idea that G'S Auto Hauling had obtained his vehicle and brought it to Alberta. He said he's prepared to take the matter to court and wants compensation for his expenses over the past two months.

The small school had a liberal outlook and a progressive curriculum more modern than the larger, more prestigious schools. In the family atmosphere at Clarke's, Keats developed an interest in classics and history, which would stay with him throughout his short life. The headmaster's son, Charles Cowden Clarke, also became an important mentor and friend, introducing Keats to Renaissance literature, including Tasso, Spenser, and Chapman's translations. The young Keats was described by his friend Edward Holmes as a volatile character, "always in extremes", given to indolence and fighting. However, at 13 he began focusing his energy on reading and study, winning his first academic prize in midsummer 1809.

    In April 1804, when Keats was eight, his father died from a skull fracture, suffered when he fell from his horse while returning from a visit to Keats and his brother George at school. Thomas Keats died intestate. Frances remarried two months later, but left her new husband soon afterwards, and the four children went to live with their grandmother, Alice Jennings, in the village of Edmonton.

In March 1810, when Keats was 14, his mother died of tuberculosis, leaving the children in the custody of their grandmother. She appointed two guardians, Richard Abbey and John Sandell, to take care of them. That autumn, Keats left Clarke's school to apprentice with Thomas Hammond, a surgeon and apothecary who was a neighbour and the doctor of the Jennings family.     Having finished his apprenticeship with Hammond, Keats registered as a medical student at Guy's Hospital (now part of King's College London) and began studying there in October 1815. His brother George wrote that John "feared that he should never be a poet, & if he was not he would destroy himself". In 1816, Keats received his apothecary's licence, which made him eligible to practise as an apothecary, physician, and surgeon, but before the end of the year he announced to his guardian that he was resolved to be a poet, not a surgeon.

Although he continued his work and training at Guy's, Keats devoted more and more time to the study of literature, experimenting with verse forms, particularly the sonnet. In May 1816, Leigh Hunt agreed to publish the sonnet "O Solitude" in his magazine, The Examiner, a leading liberal magazine of the day. It was the first appearance in print of Keats's poetry, and Charles Cowden Clarkedescribed it as his friend's red letter day, the first proof that Keats's ambitions were valid. Among his poems of 1816 was To My Brothers. In the summer of that year, Keats went with Clarke to the seaside town of Margate to write. There he began "Calidore" and initiated the era of his great letter writing. On his return to London, he took lodgings at 8 Dean Street, Southwark, and braced himself for further study in order to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons.

In October 1816, Clarke introduced Keats to the influential Leigh Hunt, a close friend of Byron and Shelley. Five months later came the publication of Poems, the first volume of Keats's verse, which included "I stood tiptoe" and "Sleep and Poetry," both strongly influenced by Hunt. The book was a critical failure, arousing little interest, although Reynolds reviewed it favourably in The Champion. Clarke commented that the book "might have emerged in Timbuctoo." Keats's publishers, Charles and James Ollier, felt ashamed of the book. Keats immediately changed publishers to Taylor and Hessey on Fleet Street. Unlike the Olliers, Keats's new publishers were enthusiastic about his work. Within a month of the publication of Poems they were planning a new Keats volume and had paid him an advance. Hessey became a steady friend to Keats and made the company's rooms available for young writers to meet. Their publishing lists eventually included Coleridge, Hazlitt, Clare, Hogg, Carlyle and Lamb.

Through Taylor and Hessey, Keats met their Eton-educated lawyer, Richard Woodhouse, who advised them on literary as well as legal matters and was deeply impressed by Poems. What imagination seizes as Beauty must be truth." This passage would eventually be transmuted into the concluding lines of "Ode on a Grecian Urn": "'Beauty is truth, truth beauty' – that is all / Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know". In early December 1816, under the heady influence of his artistic friends, Keats told Abbey that he had decided to give up medicine in favour of poetry, to Abbey's fury. Keats had spent a great deal on his medical training and, despite his state of financial hardship and indebtedness, had made large loans to friends such as painter Benjamin Haydon. Keats would go on to lend £700 to his brother George. By lending so much, Keats could no longer cover the interest of his own debts.

Having left his training at the hospital, suffering from a succession of colds, and unhappy with living in damp rooms in London, Keats moved with his brothers into rooms at 1 Well Walk in the village of Hampstead in April 1817. Both John and George nursed their brother Tom, who was suffering from tuberculosis. Letters and drafts of poems suggest that Keats first met Frances (Fanny) Brawne between September and November 1818. It is likely that the 18-year-old Brawne visited the Dilke family at Wentworth Place before she lived there. Tuberculosis took hold and he was advised by his doctors to move to a warmer climate. In September 1820 Keats left for Rome knowing he would probably never see Brawne again. After leaving he felt unable to write to her or read her letters, although he did correspond with her mother. He died there five months later. None of Brawne's letters to Keats survive.

It took a month for the news of his death to reach London, after which Brawne stayed in mourning for six years. In 1833, more than 12 years after his death, she married and went on to have three children; she outlived Keats by more than 40 years.
