The SAK exam is exclusively for teenagers and aims to mirror a slice of high schoolers' lives. Standardized Exams are a significant aspect of student life, and I wanted to incorporate a bit of that into the game. Sims has various steps to get ready for the exam, but there are certain registration periods to follow. Additionally, students can acquire a SAK late registration ticket, albeit at a higher cost.

Meet With Guidance Counsellor 

If your Sims face financial difficulties and can't afford a ticket, they can meet the guidance counselor to see if they're eligible for a fee waiver. If eligible, they can sign up using the regular option at no additional cost. However, if they're buying a late ticket, they'll have to pay the late fee.

Buy Test Prep 

Your Sim also has the option to purchase test prep books, which significantly aid in achieving higher scores. However, they're quite expensive. If your Sim has the means, it's highly recommended to invest in these prep books. They're a great way to enhance your score.

Use Free Online Tools 

If your sim cannot afford to pay for the books it's okay! They can also use the free online tools at their disposal. The free online tools though are less useful in helping your sim achieve a really high score. They still can, but you really need to invest your time in them.

Hire Tutor 

Your Sim can also hire a tutor, but it will come at a cost with varying fees. Tutors can provide valuable advice and guide your Sim through the studying process. They can either come over or meet at a designated location (rabbit hole). You can also hire as many tutors as you would like. 

Exam

When your Sims are ready for the exam, they can attend on a Saturday at 7 a.m. Make sure they're on time as the doors close at 8 a.m. The exam will last for 6 hours, and Sims will be dismissed afterward. Results will be released 24 hours later. Sims who get a really high score are usually admitted into university faster!

Scoring Structure  

The exam is scored out of 300 points, and Sims can improve their score by enhancing their logic and writing skills. Besides that, they should practice as much as possible. The more they practice and utilize the available tools, the higher their score will be.

You ended up avoiding the library at all costs. You don't know if you could face Yves after that first cringeworthy meeting.

You worked your ass off for the exams, yet you simultaneously felt like you haven't prepared for it at all. Today's your last paper.

And you left the hall with a thousand-yard stare, it was the most atrocious one yet. You just hope that the university got burnt down and you will just get your degree instantly. No use in crying over spilt milk.

Might as well use the angst to fuel yourself for an entire day off... cleaning your room. You neglected your hygiene and the clutter buildup during exams, you can barely see the floor anymore.

You muttered curses under your breath as you walked to the bus stop. Instead of darkness, it's the blazing late afternoon sun beating down on you.

Maybe you deserve a little treat. The bus goes to a nearby cheap Chinese takeaway that has a rating of 1.8 stars out of 5 online. That's the most luxurious thing you can afford at the moment and god knows you need a little reward to keep you going.

You grunted as you stood up, feeling the pressure in your knees as you haul your infinitely heavy backpack onto your shoulders.

You entered the bus, it's fairly empty. You sat on a seat and placed your load beside you. Sighing in relief as you get to relax for a bit until your next stop.

You begin to ponder as the bus leaves for its next destination. You definitely have a crush on Yves, who wouldn't? But you think he's too out of your league, trying to go after him will end in heartbreak or rejection. Plus, you can't afford to fail, you're not from a very financially comfortable background in the first place. Yves will only serve as a lethal distraction to you.

You gnaw on your fingernails. But Yves is no doubt attractive, it's just a shame that you're not of equal standing. You don't trust yourself to win him over, he will tolerate you at best, despise you for being a creep at worst.

And you think that his flirtatious tendencies are just part of him. He probably does this to everyone, or he's doing this to you because it's funny to see you squirm.

You frowned, this is not a viable relationship for you at all. No matter how badly you want it to be, it's not going to end well. So you vow to avoid the library as much as you can. If you must go, you have to try to limit any interactions with him and leave immediately after you're done with your business.

You pressed the buzzer to the next stop.

It's finally your turn to customize your very own takeaway box. You chose the cheapest possible option, it was hard because there were so many choices to make. The lady over the counter told you to hurry up as you're holding the line.

Once you're done, you fished the loose change from your pocket, only to see that you just have enough for one meal. Better than not enough, you have to make this meal last until tomorrow.

You had to wait in line again to pay at the register. Maybe you should have gone home and enjoyed some instant noodles, this is such a pain in the ass to even get. You have to suffer under the sweltering heat in a hole in the wall restaurant, you can't imagine being the employees here.

"Your meal's been paid for." The cashier monotonously informed you.

"Take your meal and move." She bluntly gestured you to leave, handing you your styrofoam container. She paid no attention to you as she went on to collect the money of another customer.

You scratched your head. It's been paid for? Well that's nice, you wonder who was kind enough to do so.

As you inspect the contents of your takeaway and become baffled as to why there's suddenly more items, you notice a shadow looming over you.

You snapped your head up and felt your heart sink down to your stomach.

"Hello." He smiled, giving you an awkward wave before brushing his shaggy brown hair back. "Fancy meetin' you here."

He looks so much better not covered in his own vomit. The stranger is wearing a high Vis jacket that's been stained by wall paint. His sleeves were dusty and he had some dirt smears on his boots.

You greeted him too. You asked if he was the one who paid for your lunch. He nodded.

"Thanks for saving me that night. I wouldn't be here without you." Your eyes landed on his free hand which is subconsciously cradling his side.

You asked him about his rib. He lets out chuckle, telling you it's fine.

"How are your exams?"

Oh.

He remembered. That isn't good.

You said that it's bad. But you will live. You said you have to go, and expressed your gratitude towards him for taking care of lunch.

"Where to? Let me give you a ride." He offered, readying his car keys in his hands.

You said that it's not needed, you don't want to take up more of his time. And it's also because you don't trust this man.

"No, really. I'll take you where you want to go. It's blazin' outside and I have air conditioning in my car. I'm done workin' for the day too."

Now that sounds exponentially enticing.

You have a feeling that he isn't going to leave you alone no matter how many times you reject him. And with your braincells fried from your exams, your safety instincts were dulled. All you want to do is eat now.

He must have noticed your growling stomach. Because he offered to eat in his car first, the driving can wait.

"Hungry, huh?" He commented as he watches you scarf down your order. Including the extra meat and vegetables that Montgomery requested to be added to yours. He barely gets a couple spoons of his chicken fried rice in, and you're already done with half of yours.

You nodded. Focusing on shovelling in as much food as you could.

"You don't usually get to eat much, do ya?"

You shook your head. Not noticing the look of pity on his face.

You enjoyed having the cool wind blowing on you, for once this summer, you didn't have to sweat like a pig. You wished that he could have cleaned his car up a bit though. It was a mess, the entire back seat was basically unusable. His car looked beaten up and rusty on the outside.

You and him ate in silence after that. If you weren't starving, you would have tried getting out of the car due to its crippling awkwardness. You think he's uncomfortable in the quietness too, but it's the opposite. He found peace and the constant loneliness he feels isn't around to bother him today. He just enjoys your presence, even though he doesn't know your real name.

Unbeknownst to you, Montgomery thinks you shared a special connection with him. Two lost souls trying to find their footing in this world, facing problems that are different yet similar. Neither of you are perfect, but you're not like the rest of the people he met who were apathetic and sickeningly artificial. You are real. You have a personality that you struggle to hide, just like him.

Montgomery's delusions and desperation have made him think you were meant to be with him- a godsend. You just can't see it yet, but he is perfect for you. And he's going to be patient and persistent, he doesn't want to scare you off.

"Oh- you're done." He noted as you closed your box and put it on your lap. You wiped your mouth using the sleeve of your shirt. He grimaced at the grease stain.

"I have napkins right here!" He pointed at the dented tissue box tucked under his radio. You're surprised that this bothered him when the state of his car and the conditions of his work were inherently dirty.

You shrugged and took a big gulp of the soda Montgomery bought for you.

You burped in your hand and muttered an "excuse me". He asked if you're full, you nodded in response.

"Well, I'm glad you're fed. Is there anything else I could get ya? Ice cream? Pie? Some cake?"

You said no, you have to go somewhere.

He closed his styrofoam container and tossed it to the back. He gripped his steering wheel and positioned his feet on the pedal.

Life in China Observations #4

It's been a while since I last did this, so let's go again!

Identity is complicated The question "where are you from" can be just as complicated as it is simple. For many people, their country of birth is where they're from, which is usually the case here. However, if you happen to be born in country A to parents from cultures B and C, immigrated and became a citizen of country D and now attend university in country E and are now on an exchange program in China, the question "where are you from" is not that easily answered. From what some of my friends told me, where you're from is actually the place where your dad was born in even though you may have been born in a different city which is a pretty interesting concept known as the "ancestral home" - 祖籍 (zǔjí) or 籍贯 (jígùan).

You have to make the first step I may have mentioned this in a previous post, but people are constantly doing something and unless you specifically and intentionally reach out and work on your friendship, you may end up drifting apart. Maybe this is a specific thing, but back home I could go a few weeks without really reaching out to my friends and then someone would suggest grabbing lunch together and it would be like no time had passed at all since we last saw each other. Here? Quite different.

Taobao You can buy anything on taobao. Literally. I saw someone selling a house there. I was previously a little shocked to see animals such as cats and bunnies being sold, but after seeing houses and cars being sold I honestly don't know what else is there to surprise me with.

Prepare in advance (foodwise) for the lunar new year During those 8-12ish days during the holdiays a lot of stores were closed. The convenience store outside my campus was open thank God, because otherwise I would have been living on instant porridge and instant soup which was my main food source 2 weeks prior due to being ill and there is only so much instant oatmeal that you can eat before slightly losing it.

Being ill is a nightmare And I mean the mandatory-bed-rest-no-going-out-for-at-least-5-days ill kind. You need to go to the hospital or a clinic to get a note to give to your school otherwise the day's you're absent will be counted, and once they reach a specific percentage you won't be allowed to take the exam (which can seriously mess with your grades, even more if you're there as an exchange student).

The weather can change at the blink of an eye I remember back in December the weather was in the negative digits and then suddenly the next day it was around 20 celcius?? The very next day it went to 3-4, and even now in March it's very all over the place. The weather forecast is not that useful because I'll leave the dorms wearing my coat in the morning only to return carrying my coat, jumper, long-sleeved shirt and wearing only my t-shirt.

More affordable beauty products I saw some products go for around $80 online?? And here on Taobao they cost under $10? I'm assuming it's the shipping costs that drive up the price so drastically, and now I'm pondering whether it would be cheaper to order online or to travel to China every couple of years just to stock up on beauty products.

CLEP

   College Learning Examination Program (?maybe). A while back I got a notice from the local school system recommending CLEP as a way of getting college credits. I wanted to let you know what I’ve found about that so far, and I’ll update as we go along. This is a sample of the adverts they put out.

   So. My first question was: How can I find out if my kids’ colleges will give credit for CLEP exams? I wrote to the admin dept of my son’s school and got a clear affirmative. Then I got clued in that you can search the college website for “CLEP policy” and get an answer for any college.

   Second issue; where are tests given. I was able to search CLEP’s website for their testing sites and found that the local community college has CLEP testing.*

  So far, so good. Where it gets a bit stickier is the actual coursework to prepare for this exam. If you’ll read the advert above, you will note that they promise “free and affordable online study resources.” That is . . an exaggeration. Like many other education sites I have investigated over the years, you don’t get to see even a small sample of what you’re buying until you have already bought it. In this case, the ‘study resources’ consist of a pdf, 23 pages of which consists of promo info for CLEP and details of testing rules and 14 pages of which consists of 60 sample questions for the chemistry exam. They are multiple choice, and the correct choice is given at the end, but the actual worked-out answer is not given. Nor any other study material. Instead, you are supposed to go find your own resources and study the (very large) number of topics covered. All you get from CLEP is. One sample exam. Sixty questions.

   Well, we are going to try to make this work. Primarily because the (only) prof who teaches this class at my son’s school is an absolute maniac. As I said, I will keep anyone who is interested posted on the process. I DO have an actual chemistry textbook. Youtube Bozeman Science, here we come.

Next to me was all the signed paperwork, all done up in a nice folder. All the pre-treatment testing, the psychologist’s sealed assessment, early blood hormone level testing…

“Miss Hailey?” The voice of the nice receptionist called, snapping me out of my own thoughts and back to reality. The reality that I was finally going to be able to start taking the medication I needed to make my body feel right. “Here.” I replied, my voice way too deep and masculine sounding, but I couldn’t afford a vocal coach so online videos were all I had to work with. It didn’t help that I was tone deaf on top of it. I got up as the receptionist came around the desk, gesturing for me to follow. She had this warm smile on her face, as if I wasn’t the disgusting person I constantly saw in the mirror. I followed her back through the hallway to the doctor’s office, simply passing a small smile back at her.

Guiding me into the office, she gestured for me to sit down on the standard, uncomfortable exam table. I muttered a quiet thanks as I did so, setting my paperwork on the doctor’s desk in the room. Informed that the doctor would be there in a few minutes, I simply waited in silence.

Soon the doctor, a smart looking man with short brown hair and a pair of circle framed glasses stepped into the room. He was dressed in his lab coat and sat at the desk I has put my documents onto, glancing over them briefly before turning to me. “So, Miss… Hailey, is it?” He asks, as I give him a brief nod before he continues speaking, “Seems like we finally have everything we need to start on the medications. Thank you for being so prepared, not many clients are this organized about starting the process. Why don’t we start discussing the changes we expect to see physically and mentally, then I’ll write your prescription?”

I nod again, and he begins to talk. Speaking about what the expected timeline is and what effects and side effects we could see, but… I was not listening. My ears were ringing as I numbly nodded along to his words, my heart pounding in my head. Everything was finally happening; it was going to be real! I was going to finally start the hormone replacement treatment and become a girl, physically! I’d been waiting literally for years for this point and to get here was just liberating.

“So, I think that explains everything. Do you understand what I’ve explained to you?” He asked me, a soft smile on his face as he finished up, catching me off guard for a moment as I caught up to reality and out of my fantasies.

“Yeah, I do. I have been waiting for this for so long, Doctor. Please…” I replied, my voice breathy as I tried to keep from shouting at him to just write me the note and let me get the medication already.

“Alright then. Let’s get you started then.” He turned to his computer and started typing out the prescription for me. Soon it was printed off and in my hands as I headed down the elevator to the pharmacy. The doctor had also given me some extra sheets of paper and pamphlets, one with a happy woman on the front of it, but I was far too excited and overly eager to get the medication that I failed to notice the fact she was naked and wearing a collar. It simply remained forgotten.

I handed over my prescription and only a half-hour later I was walking out with the two different medications in hand. The names were far too long for me to worry about memorizing, but at least they had the instructions right on the bottle. I was told to take one of each after dinner each night, so it wasn’t a hard process to remember. We’d be upping them slowly over time, but to get me started and adjusted this was the right dose.

Regardless, I was extremely excited and relieved to get home and start taking them. The small apartment I shared with my roommate Kara wasn’t the best place, but for the most part she was nice enough the little we interacted, and we both paid our bills on time. She sometimes got a bit loud doing gaming streams in her room but those were during the daytime, so I put up with it.

As I got home, she was up making grilled cheese in the kitchen area just across from the front door. She turned her head to me, giving a small smile as I stepped in and hung up my keys. Moving into the small living room I dropped my paperwork on the coffee table with the mail, keeping the meds close. “How was your appointment?” She asked as she turned her attention back to the food.

“It went well… Finally got the approval process finished and I’m starting the medications today.”

“Congrats! It’s good to hear things going well for you finally with all this stuff, it’s been practically forever since you started trying to get it!”

I gave her a small nod, muttering out a thanks as I headed towards my room. It was not hard to notice her expression fall as I moved on without much conversation, but I didn’t have the energy after dealing with the doctor and public earlier. I just needed to get into the quiet isolation of my room.

Out in the living-room, Kara picked up the flyers that I’d abandoned in my haste to get away from a conversation. Picking it up and starting to read it over, an idea began to form in her head as she saw the title.
